The wheat aphid species individually and collectively cause severe damage to the wheat crop qualitatively and quantitatively. The incidence of these aphids is influenced by a number of biotic factors such as host plant resistance, availability of the natural enemies and the major abiotic factors such as temperature, humidity and rainfall. In the present investigation, the incidence and abundance of wheat aphid species were recorded with rapeseed as a perimeter crop. The results showed that wheat was infested by two major aphid species, bird cherry oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi and green peach aphid, Myzus persicae with rapeseed as a perimeter crop. The results further suggested that the level of infestation in wheat with perimeter crop remained low compared to check, influenced by the presence of natural enemies, however, the level of infestation of M. persicae remained highly influenced by the high level of infestation in rapeseed. In light of the above experimental results we concluded that the rapeseed influenced the population of R. padi and deterred S. avenae, however, encouraged M. persicae to infest wheat crop.

The present study was designed to investigate the effect of neem application in controlling Pod borer on six different genotypic varieties (AZ-CM2, AZ-CM4, AZ-CM6, AZ-CM10, AZ-CM12 and Noor-91). The experiment was designed in a Split-Plot Design with three replicates. Different agronomic traits were recorded such as plant population, plant height, percentage flowering, physical maturity, number of pod per plant, infestation of pod borer and yield of chickpea. The results showed that plants treated with neem have high population (maximum in Noor-91 with 16.8 plants/m2 and minimum in AZ-CM12 with 2.9 plants/m2, plant height (46.7 cm in AZ-CM4 and 34.7cm in Noor-91), flowering (AZ-CM10 gave 50% flowers after 100.3 days), physical maturity (AZ-CM4 took maximum time (139.7 days) to attain 90% physical maturity while AZ-CM2 and AZ-CM4 took only 136.0 days to attain 90% physical maturity), average number of pods (Noor 91 has higher 19.4 and AZ-CM2 has lowest 12.1). Infestation of pod borer and % damage was found lower in neem sprayed plant. Overall highest yield was observed in plants treated with neem as compared to control and genotype dependent. It is concluded from the results that neem application has a significant effect in controlling pod borer and this effect varies from genotype to genotype. Noor-91 was found to be more resistant towards pod borer.

Globally, rice production is limited by abiotic and biotic factors. Of the insect pests attacking rice, the stalk-eyed fly is the most abundant. Major rice growing districts in Uganda are affected, and varieties grown by farmers are susceptible. The objective of this study was to identify sources of resistance to stalk-eyed flies among improved rice genotypes in Uganda. Fifty genotypes from the Africa Rice Centre, IRRI, South Korea and the National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI) in Uganda were screened under cage and field conditions at NaCRRI. Trials were laid out in an alpha lattice design, with 3 replications, for both experiments. Natural infestation (D. longicornis or D. apicalis) was used in the field while cage trials utilized artificial infestation with D. longicornis. Data on deadhearts were collected from seedling to tillering stages, at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. Analyses of variance were performed using restricted maximum likelihood. Infestation levels for 31 (62%) rice genotypes were the same under both field and cage conditions, 4 (8%) genotypes showed higher susceptibility in the cage than in the field and 15 (30%) were more resistant in the cage than in the field. Genotypes NERICA 4, TXD306, NM7-22-11-B-P-1-1 and K85 were identified as the most resistant varieties. F3 genotypes (GSR IR1- 5-S14-S2-Y1 x K85, Gigante x NERICA4, NERICA4 x Gigante, NERICA1x NERICA4, NERICA4 x NERICA6, and NERICA4 x SUPA) were also found resistant. These genotypes were recommended for release and further advancement, respectively.

Influence of Various Intercrops on Pod Borers in Black Gramijtsrd
The aim of this study was to observe the influence of various intercrops on pod borers in black gram under rain fed condition. Among the different intercrops studied, marigold recorded the lowest mean population of spotted pod borer (0.74 larvaplant) and gram blue butterfly larva (0.88 larvaplant)and natural enemies like Coccinellids (2.68 beetlesplant) and spider population (1.73 spiderplant) was maximum in black gram intercropped with maize. The maximum equivalent yield was obtained from black gram intercropped with marigold (6.04 qha) followed by black gram intercropped with maize (5.24 qha).In conclusion marigold proved to be effective intercrop to control major pod borer and also enhance the population of natural enemies. Identification and Evaluation of Bacterial Blight Occurrence on Guar Crop in ...ijtsrd
Guar crop grown in Gadarif State is attacked by leaf blight disease. Therefore, a disease survey in season 2014 and field experiments for examination of six sources of guar seeds in season 2015 respectively conducted in southern and northern geographical areas of Gadarif State to identify and evaluate the incidence of the disease. The results indicated that this disease is caused by bacterial disease identified as Xanthomonas spp. The disease survey in farmer fields revealed that, all guar grown in southern area at locations of Azaza, Samsam and Saraf Saeed was almost infected by the disease. The findings of the field experiment in southern geographic area indicate that, the disease incidence percent ranged between 37.5 to 47.3 , whereas the disease severity is reached up to 100 resulting in complete crop damage. However, in the northern area the disease was quite negligible with an average of 2.1 . The six sources of guar seeds at northern area, gave highest yield ranged between 234.8 to 214.5 kg fed compared to those tested in southern geographical area of Gadarif state which were gave a very few numbers of capsules. This study indicated that, the epidemic occurrence of the bacterial blight disease on guar crop is almost associated with the amount of high rather than the relatively low amount of rainfall areas of production of guar. Effect of Sowing Dates and Varieties on the Incidence of Insect Pests on Mung...ijtsrd
Experiments were carried out in farmer’s field of Latpankone village in Nyaunglebin Township, Bago Region in Myanmar, during winter seasons in 2017 2018 and 2018 2019. A field trial was arranged in a split plot design with three replications. Five sowing dates as main plot factor and three mungbean varieties as subplot factor were set up. The maximum percentage of bean fly infested plants was 50 and 70.44 in S5 16th Dec during the first experiment and the second experiment, respectively. The highest mean number of thrips per flower 3.72 and 4.69 were found in S4 9th Dec in first experiment and second experiment, respectively. The maximum percentage of aphid infested plants 13.22 and 28.27 was found in S1 18th Nov in the first and in the second experiment, respectively. All sowing dates had significant effect on insect pests in both years except thrips in 2018 2019.The varieties were found to have significant effect on aphid in 2017 2018. The varieties were also found to have significant effect on bean fly infested plant sand thrips in 2018 2019. The pod borer larvae were only observed in 2018 2019 and lowest number in S1 18th Nov . It is inferred that early sowing resulted in lower incidence of bean fly and thrips except aphid. The results suggest that for ensuring reduced infestation of majority of insect pests, mungbean in winter season should be sown in mid November, in the study area. Microgreens are edible baby plants with huge potential for leafy vegetable production and many consider this plant based functional food as the new “Superfood”. Microgreens have many advantages over sprouts and they help to improve the nutritional value of our diet, with their high content of healthy compounds. During the microgreen cultivation, seeding is usually done as a broadcast or in rows and as the seeding density is difficult to recommend, most growers prefer to seed as thickly as possible to maximize production, but not too thickly because crowding encourages elongated stems which increases the risk of disease. Some growers have noticed the possibility of a “second harvest” of microgreens, just after the majority of tall grown microgreens are carefully harvested from the substrate with very high density of seeds, leaving a certain percentage of ungerminated seeds and sprouts to develop further. The present study investigated the possibility of harvesting more than one microgreen crop from a set of chickpea seeds through the regeneration of shoots after the first and the successive cuts above the lowest nodal portion of the shoots. Assessment of Pest Severity and Biological Parameters of Bactrocera minax in ...AI Publications
Chinese Citrus fly, Bactrocera(Tetradacus) minax(Enderlein), univoltine fruit fly species, is a serious insect pest in Nepal, Bhutan, China, India causing 100% fruit drop in sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L.) orchards in severe case. Four elevation ranges: 1400-1474masl, 1475-1549masl, 1550-1624masl and >1624masl of Ramechhap district were taken for the study of severity of infestation by this fly species in November 2018. A subsequent rearing was conducted at Agriculture and Forestry University, Chitwan, Nepal upto April 2019 to assess various developmental parameters of Bactrocera minax starting from larval stage in infested sweet oranges to the adult flies. Elevation range had the most significant effect (P<0.05) on pest severity (2017/18). Pest severity had strong relationship on elevation of orchards (R2=0.6638). Maximum pest severity (37.12%) was found in 1550-1624masl and minimum (2.90%) in 1400-1474masl. Maximum mean maggots/fruit (6.40±1.25) at 1550-1624masl and minimum (3.95±0.92) at 1475-1549masl were recorded. Post-pupal mortality was higher than pre-pupal mortality. Maximum pre-pupal mortality (11.13±5.24%) at >1624masl and the minimum (2.08±1.46%) at 1550-1624masl were recorded while 1475-1549masl and 1400-1474masl had the respective minimum (25.81±7.59%) and maximum (36.08±9.17%) post-pupal mortality. Most adult flies emerged by 2nd week of March lasting 115 days for adult eclosion. Sex ratio (male: female) was maximum (2.5) at 1400-1474masl and minimum (1.2) at >1624masl. Without feeding an adult fly survived upto 3 days. It can be speculated that besides other meteorological factors, elevation affects geographical distribution of fly and its subsequent biological parameters.

Millsp.), Black gram (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper), Horse gram (Macrotyloma uniflorum (Lam.) Verdc.) and French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were transmitted with MYMV. Seedlings with early inoculation recorded highest per cent transmission. 93.33 per cent transmission was recorded in ten days old seedlings followed 80, 66.66, 46.66 and 33.33 per cent transmission were recorded by 15, 20, 25 and 30 days old seedlings, respectively.

Drought stress is one of the major abiotic factors affecting seed germination and plant growth especially in arid and semi-arid regions. In this study, we investigated the effects of drought stress on seed germination and seedling growth of five varieties of rapeseed. Seven drought stress levels of zero (control), -3, -5, -7, -9, -11 and -13 bars were performed using polyethylene glycol-6000 (PEG-6000). A completely randomized design with three replications was used for this experiment. Germination percentage (GP), germination rate (GR), mean germination time (MGT), root length (RL) and shoot length (SL) were measured to evaluate the varieties response to PEG-induced drought stress. Drought stress, variety and the interaction drought × variety had a significant effect on all studied parameters. GP and GR decreased with the increase in stress level, while MGT increased. There were no seeds germinated for all varieties at -11 bars and -13 bars. Shoot length decreased with increasing drought stress but different varieties show different performance under stress environment. Root length decreased with increasing level of severe drought stress. However, the presence of moderate drought stress could even improve the root growth of the investigated varieties. The varieties ‘INRA-CZH2’ and ‘INRA-CZH3’ exhibited the highest germination percentage and the best early seedling growth. Thus, they could be recommended for environments with early cropping cycle drought.

Among avian pests, house sparrow caused serious depredations, not only to seeds, but also seedlings of various crops particularly in the organic farming. Different mechanical and chemical ways have been reported to manage these losses all over the world. The present study was aimed to investigate the efficacy of two bird repellents namely methylanthranilate and anthraquinone to manage the depredations of wheat seeds and seedlings against house sparrow in captivity. For this purpose house sparrows were offered with treated and untreated seeds and seedlings of wheat in two aviaries. By providing treated seeds and seedlings with these repellents, the relative effectiveness was appraised by comparing the consumed and unconsumed seeds and seedlings. Feeding responses of these birds against different doses of these repellents were investigated with the help of the closed circuit cameras adjusted in the aviaries. During the whole experiment among trial and control group highly significant differences (P<0.01)><0.05)>0.05) variance when wheat seeds and seedlings were offered to house sparrows. House sparrows were influenced more quickly by consuming wheat seeds and seedlings treated with both repellents. Sparrows displayed noticeable head-shaking and feather ruffling behavior by consuming the treated seeds and seedlings. A total of 59 converted sorghum lines and 6 checks were evaluated for resistance to two foliar fungal diseases, anthracnose and downy mildew (SDM) in 2008 and 2009 growing seasons at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research Farm, College Station, Texas. In 2008, 23 lines exhibited resistance (35%), 29 susceptible (45%) and 13 variable responses (20%) while 15 lines showed resistance (28%), 31 susceptible (57%), and 8 variable responses to anthracnose in 2009. Nine lines SC748, PI534101, PI534073, PI533950, PI534155, PI533802, PI533776, PI533911 and PI533759 exhibited anthracnose resistance response in both years. Significantly a wide range of 8 to 89% SDM incidence was observed in the study. None of the lines recorded SDM resistance reaction in both years. However, 15 lines PI534119, PI533983, PI597970, PI534160, PI570726, PI534161, PI534112, PI576374, PI533753, SC748, PI533991, PI569998, PI534050, PI534155 and PI533898 recorded moderate resistance to SDM incidence and recommended for use in further breeding programs. There was a positive significant correlation (P = 0.0392) between anthracnose and SDM, indicating that the lines showing higher SDM incidence favors higher anthracnose infection. Significant correlation between precipitation and SDM was also noted. SC748 and PI534155 exhibited resistance to anthracnose and downy mildew diseases and hold promise for utilization in breeding programs as potential checks.
Identification and Evaluation of Bacterial Blight Occurrence on Guar Crop in ...ijtsrd
Guar crop grown in Gadarif State is attacked by leaf blight disease. Therefore, a disease survey in season 2014 and field experiments for examination of six sources of guar seeds in season 2015 respectively conducted in southern and northern geographical areas of Gadarif State to identify and evaluate the incidence of the disease. The results indicated that this disease is caused by bacterial disease identified as Xanthomonas spp. The disease survey in farmer fields revealed that, all guar grown in southern area at locations of Azaza, Samsam and Saraf Saeed was almost infected by the disease. The findings of the field experiment in southern geographic area indicate that, the disease incidence percent ranged between 37.5 to 47.3 , whereas the disease severity is reached up to 100 resulting in complete crop damage. However, in the northern area the disease was quite negligible with an average of 2.1 . The six sources of guar seeds at northern area, gave highest yield ranged between 234.8 to 214.5 kg fed compared to those tested in southern geographical area of Gadarif state which were gave a very few numbers of capsules. This study indicated that, the epidemic occurrence of the bacterial blight disease on guar crop is almost associated with the amount of high rather than the relatively low amount of rainfall areas of production of guar. Experiments were carried out in farmer’s field of Latpankone village in Nyaunglebin Township, Bago Region in Myanmar, during winter seasons in 2017 2018 and 2018 2019. A field trial was arranged in a split plot design with three replications. Five sowing dates as main plot factor and three mungbean varieties as subplot factor were set up. The maximum percentage of bean fly infested plants was 50 and 70.44 in S5 16th Dec during the first experiment and the second experiment, respectively. The highest mean number of thrips per flower 3.72 and 4.69 were found in S4 9th Dec in first experiment and second experiment, respectively. The maximum percentage of aphid infested plants 13.22 and 28.27 was found in S1 18th Nov in the first and in the second experiment, respectively. All sowing dates had significant effect on insect pests in both years except thrips in 2018 2019.The varieties were found to have significant effect on aphid in 2017 2018. The varieties were also found to have significant effect on bean fly infested plant sand thrips in 2018 2019. The pod borer larvae were only observed in 2018 2019 and lowest number in S1 18th Nov . It is inferred that early sowing resulted in lower incidence of bean fly and thrips except aphid. The results suggest that for ensuring reduced infestation of majority of insect pests, mungbean in winter season should be sown in mid November, in the study area. Microgreens are edible baby plants with huge potential for leafy vegetable production and many consider this plant based functional food as the new “Superfood”. Microgreens have many advantages over sprouts and they help to improve the nutritional value of our diet, with their high content of healthy compounds. During the microgreen cultivation, seeding is usually done as a broadcast or in rows and as the seeding density is difficult to recommend, most growers prefer to seed as thickly as possible to maximize production, but not too thickly because crowding encourages elongated stems which increases the risk of disease. Some growers have noticed the possibility of a “second harvest” of microgreens, just after the majority of tall grown microgreens are carefully harvested from the substrate with very high density of seeds, leaving a certain percentage of ungerminated seeds and sprouts to develop further. The present study investigated the possibility of harvesting more than one microgreen crop from a set of chickpea seeds through the regeneration of shoots after the first and the successive cuts above the lowest nodal portion of the shoots. Assessment of Pest Severity and Biological Parameters of Bactrocera minax in ...AI Publications
Chinese Citrus fly, Bactrocera(Tetradacus) minax(Enderlein), univoltine fruit fly species, is a serious insect pest in Nepal, Bhutan, China, India causing 100% fruit drop in sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L.) orchards in severe case. Four elevation ranges: 1400-1474masl, 1475-1549masl, 1550-1624masl and >1624masl of Ramechhap district were taken for the study of severity of infestation by this fly species in November 2018. A subsequent rearing was conducted at Agriculture and Forestry University, Chitwan, Nepal upto April 2019 to assess various developmental parameters of Bactrocera minax starting from larval stage in infested sweet oranges to the adult flies. Elevation range had the most significant effect (P<0.05) on pest severity (2017/18). Pest severity had strong relationship on elevation of orchards (R2=0.6638). Maximum pest severity (37.12%) was found in 1550-1624masl and minimum (2.90%) in 1400-1474masl. Maximum mean maggots/fruit (6.40±1.25) at 1550-1624masl and minimum (3.95±0.92) at 1475-1549masl were recorded. Post-pupal mortality was higher than pre-pupal mortality. Maximum pre-pupal mortality (11.13±5.24%) at >1624masl and the minimum (2.08±1.46%) at 1550-1624masl were recorded while 1475-1549masl and 1400-1474masl had the respective minimum (25.81±7.59%) and maximum (36.08±9.17%) post-pupal mortality. Most adult flies emerged by 2nd week of March lasting 115 days for adult eclosion. Sex ratio (male: female) was maximum (2.5) at 1400-1474masl and minimum (1.2) at >1624masl. Without feeding an adult fly survived upto 3 days. It can be speculated that besides other meteorological factors, elevation affects geographical distribution of fly and its subsequent biological parameters.

Drought stress is one of the major abiotic factors affecting seed germination and plant growth especially in arid and semi-arid regions. In this study, we investigated the effects of drought stress on seed germination and seedling growth of five varieties of rapeseed. Seven drought stress levels of zero (control), -3, -5, -7, -9, -11 and -13 bars were performed using polyethylene glycol-6000 (PEG-6000). A completely randomized design with three replications was used for this experiment. Germination percentage (GP), germination rate (GR), mean germination time (MGT), root length (RL) and shoot length (SL) were measured to evaluate the varieties response to PEG-induced drought stress. Drought stress, variety and the interaction drought × variety had a significant effect on all studied parameters. GP and GR decreased with the increase in stress level, while MGT increased. There were no seeds germinated for all varieties at -11 bars and -13 bars. Shoot length decreased with increasing drought stress but different varieties show different performance under stress environment. Root length decreased with increasing level of severe drought stress. However, the presence of moderate drought stress could even improve the root growth of the investigated varieties. The varieties ‘INRA-CZH2’ and ‘INRA-CZH3’ exhibited the highest germination percentage and the best early seedling growth. Thus, they could be recommended for environments with early cropping cycle drought.

Among avian pests, house sparrow caused serious depredations, not only to seeds, but also seedlings of various crops particularly in the organic farming. Different mechanical and chemical ways have been reported to manage these losses all over the world. The present study was aimed to investigate the efficacy of two bird repellents namely methylanthranilate and anthraquinone to manage the depredations of wheat seeds and seedlings against house sparrow in captivity. For this purpose house sparrows were offered with treated and untreated seeds and seedlings of wheat in two aviaries. By providing treated seeds and seedlings with these repellents, the relative effectiveness was appraised by comparing the consumed and unconsumed seeds and seedlings. Feeding responses of these birds against different doses of these repellents were investigated with the help of the closed circuit cameras adjusted in the aviaries. During the whole experiment among trial and control group highly significant differences (P<0.01)><0.05)>0.05) variance when wheat seeds and seedlings were offered to house sparrows. House sparrows were influenced more quickly by consuming wheat seeds and seedlings treated with both repellents. Sparrows displayed noticeable head-shaking and feather ruffling behavior by consuming the treated seeds and seedlings. A total of 59 converted sorghum lines and 6 checks were evaluated for resistance to two foliar fungal diseases, anthracnose and downy mildew (SDM) in 2008 and 2009 growing seasons at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research Farm, College Station, Texas. In 2008, 23 lines exhibited resistance (35%), 29 susceptible (45%) and 13 variable responses (20%) while 15 lines showed resistance (28%), 31 susceptible (57%), and 8 variable responses to anthracnose in 2009. Nine lines SC748, PI534101, PI534073, PI533950, PI534155, PI533802, PI533776, PI533911 and PI533759 exhibited anthracnose resistance response in both years. Significantly a wide range of 8 to 89% SDM incidence was observed in the study. None of the lines recorded SDM resistance reaction in both years. Grain mold, considered the most important disease of sorghum, is associated with several fungal genera. The disease reduces both yield and quality. In this study, over 300 sorghum seed samples collected from Texas, Florida, and Georgia were evaluated for grain mold severity, seed weight, germination rate, and seed fungal community. Grain mold severity of the seed samples, except for those collected from Cameron, Texas, were rated 3 or higher, indicating that these sorghum lines were moderately susceptible under naturally-infected field conditions during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons. Seed weight across surveyed locations ranged from 1.1 g to 4.0g for samples collected in Texas during the same period. Percent germination rates for samples collected in Texas ranged from 59.6% to 86.7%. Sorghum samples collected from Florida and Georgia exhibited moderately susceptible response to grain mold infection. Mean seed weight was 1.9 g for samples collected from Florida, while in Georgia, mean seed weight was 2.3 g. Germination rate was low for samples collected from Florida and Georgia. Mycological analysis of sorghum seed samples collected from farmers’ fields in Central and South Texas during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons showed Alternaria species as the most frequently isolated fungal genus, accounting for 40% and 42 % in 2016 and 2017, followed by Fusarium incarnatum, F. acuminatum, F. equiseti, & F. semitectum Complex. In Florida and Georgia, Fusarium incarnatum, F. acuminatum, F. equiseti, & F. semitectum Complex was the most frequently recovered fungal species, accounting for 77% and 72% of the total. genera/species isolated from seed samples. Other fungal species, including Curvularia lunata, Bipolaris sp., Colletotrichum sublineola, F. verticillioides, Penicillium sp., Aspergillus flavus, F. thapsinum, F. oxysporum, F. sporotrichioides, F. graminearum, F. proliferatum, and Aspergillus niger were also isolated from sorghum seeds in various frequencies. In conclusion, the presence of large number of fungal genera associated with grain deterioration and their effect on other traits, makes management of this disease complex challenging. To identify grain mold resistant sources in a region, using the most dominant species in that region to screen the sorghum germplasm is recommended.
ABSTRACT- A field trial comprising eight sorghum varieties (as treatments) arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replicates was conducted in a Striga infested plot for two consecutive seasons (2006/07 and 2007/08) at Damazin (Lat. 11º 47' N, Long. 34º 21' E); Agricultural Research Station farm in the Sudan. Objectives of the trial were to determine resistance, tolerance and susceptibility of five sorghum genotypes on basis of the population of Striga plants and grain yield of the crops. The five sorghum genotypes namely Wad Ahmed, Arfa Gadamak, Sham sham, Korokolo, and Moheireiba were compared in Striga population and sorghum grain yield with those of SRN 39, Um Bineine 7 and Tabat. Sorghum cultivars: SRN 39, Um Bineine 7 and Tabat were the Striga resistant, tolerant and susceptible checks respectively. Soil type of the trial was predominantly vertisol with decreasing nitrogen and organic matter contents corresponding to the consecutive seasons 2006/07 and 2007/08 during which the trial was conducted. Results obtained from correlating the population of Striga plants with sorghum grain yield of the various tested sorghum genotypes (Wad Ahmed, Arfa Gadamak, Sham sham, Korokolo and Moheireiba) with the checks showed that Wad Ahmed, Korokolo and Moheireiba were resistant while Arfa Gadamak was tolerant to the parasite [Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth].

Corn (Zea mays L) is the main commodity of agricultural crops in Indonesia. There are two groups of corn that are cultivated, namely ordinary corn (food corn) and sweet corn. Food corn is mainly used as a raw material for making food, which is used as a raw material for making animal feed raw materials and other industrial products. Easy cultivation, can grow in various conditions, stable selling prices and easy to market are the main driving force for high interest of the farming community to cultivate it. Spodoptera frugiperda larvae are polyphagous and attack many plant species. S. frugiperda larvae feed on more than 350 species of plants in 76 families. S. frugiperda is a typical migratory pest and this migratory behavior is an adjustment strategy to find a more profitable habitat. S. frugiperda is one of the most dangerous invasive pests due to its short life cycle. An adult female lays 900 – 1200 eggs in her life cycle. The purpose of the study was to inventory and analyze the egg parasitoid of S. frugiperda and the percentage of parasitization The analysis of the types of egg parasitoids of S. frugiperda was carried out through an inventory and identification process, while the percentage of parasitization was carried out using a randomized block design consisting of 5 treatment groups of eggs from 5 regions and three replications. The results of the inventory and identification contained two types of parasitoids, namely: Telenomus sp. and Trichogramma sp. The highest percentage of total parasitization was from Manado City at 85% and the lowest was from Bolaang Mongondow at 5%. Telenomus sp. higher percentage of parasitization than Trichogramma sp. Parasitization percentage of Telenomus sp. on eggs of S. frugiperda the highest came from Manado by 63% and the lowest came from Tomohon by 3%, while the percentage of parasitization of Trichograma sp. The highest came from Manado at 22%, and the lowest came from Bolaang Mongondow Regency at zero percent. In conclusion, there are 2 types of egg parasitoids in S. frugiperda eggs, namely the parasitoid Telenomus sp and the parasitoid Trichogramma sp., the percentage of parasitization of Telenomus sp. on eggs of S. frugiperda the highest sample from Manado and the lowest sample from Tomohon. Percentage of parasitization of Trichograma sp. the highest sample of S. frugiperda eggs from Manado, and the lowest sample from Bolaang Mongondow.

Incidence of the bean bug Chauliops fallax Sweet and Schaeffer (Hemiptera: Malcidae) was recorded on soybean and pulses grown during Kharif at five different locations under low and mid hills of Himachal Pradesh during 2016. Its incidence varied from 0.20 to 28.8 bugs per 10 plants on soybean and pulses at different locations. The maximum incidence was recorded at Sundernagar on soybean crop (28.80 bugs/ 10 plants) whereas minimum incidence was observed at Una (0.20 bugs/ 10 plants). Seasonal abundance of the bug was studied on soybean, cowpea and black gram (mash) at Palampur starting from third week of June, 2016 till last week of September, 2016. The bug appeared just after germination of the crops and remained feeding on them up to their maturity or harvesting. Peak population on soybean (188 bugs/ 10 plants) was observed during 1st week of August. Peak population on cowpea (68 bugs/ 10 plants) and mash (40 bugs/ 10 plants) was observed during 2nd week of August. Among weather parameters, rainfall and relative humidity had a significant positive correlation with bug population on the three hosts.
Use of Cover Crops in Organic Sweetpotato Production to Improve Yield: A Case...CrimsonpublishersMCDA
Organic Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam) production in the United States has become more popular due to consumers’ concern regarding food safety. Growers, however, are challenged by many issues in organic production, including weed control that was often cited as the number one factor contributing to yield reduction. This report described a case study conducted on an organic farm in central Missouri, USA where cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) or rapeseed (Brassica napus I.) were planted as cover crops. The two crops were terminated by either tilling a couple of times or mowing followed by crimping prior to Sweetpotato transplanting. This case study demonstrated that tilling the cover crops rather than mowing and crimping resulted in significant weed control especially in the early part of the growing season. This suppression also resulted in up to three times the root tuber production, compared to the untreated control where no cover crops were planted. Between the two crops, cereal rye appeared to produce a higher yield in terms of tuber counts. This case report suggests that tilling cover crops prior to Sweetpotato transplanting can benefit organic Sweetpotato production.

The bean bug Chauliops fallax feeds exclusively on all leguminous crops in most regions of the world. The population density and spatial distribution of bean bug has been investigated on three different host plant i.e. soybean, cowpea and black gram (mash) under mid hill conditions of Himachal Pradesh during 2016. The fields of 600m2 and 300m2 area were selected as a sampling unit for sampling in soybean, cowpea and black gram. Him Palam Hara Soya -1, C-475 and Pant U19 genotypes of soybean, cowpea and mash were selected for the estimation of density and distribution of the bean bug. Different methods viz., Morisita’s index, Index of dispersion and Lewis index were used to calculate the density and distribution of the population of the pest. The mean population of bugs per plant was recorded on soybean (7.25) followed by cowpea (3.01) and black gram (1.21). Studies on knowing the distribution pattern of bean bug population under field conditions revealed that in soybean the distribution of bug was contagious (2.99) while in cowpea (2.44) and black gram (1.87) regular and contagious distribution pattern was found. The Z value of Morisita’s index in case of soybean was 9.98 followed by 5.87 and 3.50 in case of cowpea and black gram. Similar trend was found in case of Index of dispersion and Lewis index. Optimum sample sizes for estimates of the pest density in all the three host plants are presented.

Cold Plasma Technique in Controlling Contamination and Improving the Physiolo...J. Agricultural Machinery
Today, almost half of the total human food, especially in Asia, is directly supplied from grains, and nearly 70% of the cultivated area of the world, which is one billion hectares, is used for growing grains. Therefore, non-destructive methods must be found and developed to increase seed quality in agriculture and industry. Cold plasma is a novel and efficient method that can be used in the agricultural and food sectors for the inactivation of surface microorganisms and the excitation of seeds. This review presents a summary of the effectiveness of cold plasma treatment on the characteristics of four important cereal plants: wheat, rice, corn, and barley. The focus is on the effects of this treatment on seed germination, surface property changes, water uptake of seeds, growth parameters of root, shoot, and seedling length, biomass parameters, and metabolic activities. By examining the research conducted by the researchers, it can be seen that the cereal seeds treated with cold plasma had better germination power, water absorption, shoot length, growth efficiency, shoot and root weight, and metabolic activity. This review can provide insight into the promising trends in utilizing plasma as a method to decrease the prevalence of harmful plant diseases transmitted through seeds and reduce the dormancy of hard seeds.
We evaluated the oviposition preference and damage capacity of Spodoptera frugiperda on the different phenological stages of corn. Tests were performed at the Assis Chateaubriand Agricultural School (07º10'15" S, 35º51'13" W, altitude 634 meters), municipality of Lagoa Seca, Paraíba State, Brazil, in two areas of 500 m2, with CMS maize hybrid strain and maize intercropped with bean with the spacing of 0.80 x 0.40 m. Eggs and caterpillars were collected weekly on 50 plants randomly sampled in five spots. Height and number of leaves per plant, and damage from caterpillars of S. frugiperda were recorded using the scale, the rangers were., 0) no damage, 1) leaf scraped, 2) leaf pierced, 3) leaf torn, 4) damage in cartridge, 5) cartridge destroyed. The average number of clutches did not differ significantly among the three phenological stages of the culture, but average clutch size (number of eggs) was significantly smaller for the stage of 4-6 leaves. However, there was a significant interaction with respect to the number of clutches between position in the plant (lower, middle, and upper) and phenological stage, and between leaf surface and phenological stages. There were significant differences among tillage systems for corn in monoculture and corn intercropped with bean.

Environmental pollution by heavy metals has become a serious problem in Jakarta Bay. Mobilization of heavy metals as a result of anthropogenic activities has caused the release of heavy metals into the environment, one of which is Pb. Several methods already used to clean up the environment from these kinds of contaminants, but most of them are costly and difficult to get optimum results. In addition heavy metal pollutans in the waters are very stable and tend to be persistent. Recently, bioaccumators is an effective and affordable technological solution used to extract or remove inactive metals and metal pollutants from contaminated soil and water. This technology is environmental friendly and potentially cost effective using bivalves. These study objectives to analyzed the Pb content of three species of Jakarta Bay bivalves. The results showed that Pb content in the Eastern and Western Season bivalve tissue was significantly lowest in P. viridis (0,166 ± 0,016μg/g dan 0,161 ± 0,155μg/g) compared the Pb concentration in A. antiquata (0,264 ± 0,015μg/g dan 0,247±0,044μg/g), and M. meretrix (0,270 ± 0,016μg/g dan 0,240 ± 0,053μg/g). In this study also showed that the concentration of heavy metal Pb in the bivalve shell of P. viridis was significantly lower than that of two species (A. antiquata and M. meretrix). Pb content in the Eastern Season bivalves did not significantly different from that in the Westerrn Season. This is caused by a weather anomaly where the rainy season occurs almos throughout year of 2020. The Pb content in the bivalves shell was significantly higher than in the body tissues. It is because Pb can replace calcium ions in the formation of animal bones or bivalve shells.

Nine hundred juveniles of Archachatina marginata aged about two weeks, with an average live weight of 2.25 g with an average shell length of 20.12mm were monitored in culture for six (6) months on five types of substrates [S1 (soil collected in a cassava plantation: Manihot sp.), S2 (S1 with 10% oyster shell meal), S3 (S1 with 10% sawdust), S4 (S1 with 5% oyster shell meal and 5% sawdust) and S5 (uncultivated forest soil). Four diets including two industrial (D1 and D 2 of 12% and 16% calcium respectively) and two based on fodder (D3 and D4 based on leaves and fruit of the papaya (Carica papaya) on the one hand and a mixture of papaya leaves and taro (Xanthosoma maffafa) on the other hand, were used. In order to determine the best combinations inducing the best growth performance, 20 combinations were formed at the rate of 45 spat for each combination; three replicas of 15 spat each. This study showed that the combination of diet and livestock substrate influences the growth of Archachatina marginata. Although the best feed is D1 (74.68 g and 7.94cm) and the best substrate is S2 (77.12 g and 7.79cm), the best combinations are D2S3 (69.37 g and 7.47cm), D1S4 (74.68 g and 7.94cm and D4S2 (77.12 g and 7.79cm). The combined effect of the high level of dietary calcium and that of the culture substrate does not promote good growth of snails. This work will help improve the production of African giant snails and provide important data for anyone wishing to engage in the breeding of these animals.

No previous research has assessed the nongenetic factors, especially the nutrition status of MS patients in Arab countries. Hence, this study aims to assess the nutritional status of MS patients among Arab adults. This study is a nationally representative cross-sectional study using a structured, online self-administered, validated quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) from 13 Arab countries. All data analyses were performed using STATA 16.0 and R for statistical computing version 4.0.4. A total of 813 participants were surveyed, most of the MS participants were female (68.4%), married (58.5%), non-smoker (72.6%) and 53.3% were diagnosed with MS for up to five years. MS participants did not consume the DRI of both the macro and the micronutrients including the energy requirements, except the dietary intake of the sodium which was insignificantly different from the DRI. Results also showed that most participants rarely consumed the main food items including bread, cereals, and most types of meat. While, more than 50% of the participants consumed fruit, vegetables, all types of chicken, fish, fresh soup, rice, and egg up to 3 times per month. On the other hand, milk and milkshake were consumed rarely; while, tea and herbal teas were the most common beverages. Nutrient deficiencies are very common among MS Arab patients. The finding of this study can establish a base for the development of a nutritional program for MS patients in accordance with the recommended DRI.

This is a sequel test after the chemical analysis and microbiological procedures have been conducted. The study determined the level of acceptability of the by-product of Talisay (Terminalia catappa) nuts specifically; Talisay Nuts Polvoron, Glazed Talisay Nuts, and Sugar-coated Talisay Nuts using sensory evaluation as to appearance, taste, aroma, sweetness, and texture. The responses of the food inclined participants are described yielding from the Hedonic Tests conducted and statistically treated. Results concluded that the developed products are remarkably acceptable and marketable.

A germination test was carried out to identify plants that can germinate and survive in polluted soil (with and without ash) collected 2.5km east and 2.5km west, 20km west and 55km west (control) of the BCL Cu/Ni mine smelter in Selebi-Phikwe, Botswana. The experiment was carried out using Phaseolus vulgaris, Moringa oleifera and Moringa stenopetala. Soil acidity and heavy metal stress reduced germination percentage, coefficient rate of germination, root and shoot growth and dry weight, root: shoot, vigour index and tolerance index of all species. Percentage reduction followed the order 2.5km west < 20km west < 2.5km east < 55km west. Phaseolus vulgaris, Moringa oleifera and Moringa stenopetala germinated in all soils. Their ability to germinate in polluted soil indicates tolerance to heavy metal and soil acidity stress and so they have potential for use in phytoremediation of polluted soils around the mine. Phaseolus vulgaris had the highest overall germination performance but there was no significant difference between the Moringas. Application of coal fly ash increased all the germination parameters and so coal fly ash has potential for use in amending polluted soil around the mine for phytoremediation purposes.

The forests of the Congo Basin cover an area of 200 million hectares, of which just over 10% is in Gabon. In this country, crop products and non-timber forest products (NTFPs) are abundant because of its favourable climate. There is significant biodiversity and great potential for non-timber forest products. This study is interested in the identification and the supply chain of the Marantaceae, one of these NTFPs of plant origin in central Gabon, whose exploitation is national. Through a survey of the main actors in the sector and field visits in the locality of Bifoun, it emerges the existence of three large groups of exploited marantaceae, whose harvest and transport are mainly done by women, in various containers. The storage of this NTFPs does not exceed four days, with the risk of losing its commercial value due to drying out. The uses of this resource are multiple: processing cassava, cooking food, making handicrafts, etc. The income it provides to producers is mainly use towards small family expenses but helps to monetize the rural world. The difficulties inherent in the distance from harvesting points, the low price of the product and the impossibility of long-term storage of the marantaceae leaves constitute a brake on the development of this activity. It would therefore be wise to envisage the domestication of the species listed for a sustainable use of this plant genetic resource.
Ethnobotany of Oyster nut (Telfairia pedata) in Northern Tanzania | JBES 2022Innspub Net
Telfairia pedata (Sims) Hook is an important native climber plant commonly grown in East Africa. It bears nuts which are eaten either raw or cooked and is consumed mostly by expectant mothers, and as cooking oil. The survey was conducted between September 2019 to February 2020 in Sambaa, Meru, and Pare communities of Lushoto, Bumbuli, Arumeru and Same Districts, Northern Tanzania to assess the ethnobotany of T. pedata from a sample of 346 respondents using semi-structured questionnaires. Results indicate that, 21% of respondents used T. pedata for cooking with other staple foods while 18% claimed that the nuts are used by pregnant and lactating mothers for medicinal and breast milk stimulation and nine (9) percent indicated that the nuts are used for cultural and ritual purposes. Despite its importance, the cultivation of T. pedata in the study area is declining and the gap why such decline is experienced needs to be answered in further studies. Secondly, respondents within the 36-50 age groups reported the greatest diversity of uses of T. pedata 51% compared with those aged below 36 years old 21% signifying that the traditional knowledge known by younger aged groups may be declining. Thus, this gap of traditional knowledge between the groups should be addressed in order to improve utilization and conservation of this seriously declining yet important nut in the study area and other places of Tanzania.

This study reports the amphibian’s fauna sampled from the Biodiversity Conservation Area of the hydroelectric dam of Soubré city (southwestern Côte d’Ivoire). This study aims to provide a better understanding of the diversity of amphibians in this relict forest of 200 ha, in order to assess the ecological health of this ecosystem for conservation and sustainable management perspectives. During dry season (from 26 February to 4 March 2018) and rainy season (from 17 to 23 June 2018), we recorded 14 species of anurans grouped into eight genera and six families. The study sites comprise an amphibian fauna consisting mainly of savannah specialists and degraded forest (64.28% of total species richness). Based on the IUCN Red List, all species recorded are of least concern. Also, these species are well distributed in the different regions of Côte d’Ivoire and Africa. Thus, it is necessary to monitor the ecology of the species and to protect subsequently the different habitats of this area.

Dearth of well-articulated information on genetic parameter estimates and diversity of upland rice limits the genetic improvement of rice. This study assessed the genetic parameter estimates and genetic diversity among 40 rice accessions using 26 agro-morphological traits. The trial was conducted in 2020 at the Njala University experimental site using 5 × 8 triple lattice design. The agro-morphological traits were analyzed using various multivariate and genetic parameter estimate techniques. Classification based on qualitative and quantitative traits grouped the germplasm into ten and five distinct clusters, respectively. Genotypes Buttercup-ABC, Buttercup-RARC, Jewulay, NERICA L4, Ndomawai, Sewulie and Painipainie produced earliest days to heading (81.8–97.2 days) and maturity (111.2 – 120.7 days). Genotypes Jasmine (3.036 t.ha-1), Rok 34 (3.238 t.ha-1) and Parmoi (2.663 t.ha-1) exhibited the highest grain yields. Principal component analysis (PCA) of qualitative traits exhibited four principal components (PCs) with eigenvalues > 1.0 and cumulative variation of 68.04%, whilst the PCA of quantitative traits had five PCs accounting for 81.73% of the total genetic variation. The findings indicate the presence of enough variability that could be exploited for the genetic improvement of rice varieties and the studied traits can be used for selection. Leaf blade length and width, culm diameter at basal internode, culm length, days to 50% heading, flag leaf girth, panicle number per plant, grain yield, and 100 grain weight had high heritability and genetic advance indicating the presence of additive gene action. Findings are relevant for conservation, management, short term recommendation for release and genetic improvement of rice.

In order to evaluate the effect of Spirodela polyrhiza using in diets of Oreochromis niloticus fingerlings, an experiment was conducted on the farm “Awara” in the village of Agongo in Sèmè – Kpodji during 70 days. The initial average weight of fry is about 1g. The stocking density was 13 fry / m². Three experimental diets made with local by-products were tested: T0 (0% S. polyrhiza Meal), T1 (5% S. polyrhiza Meal) and T2 (mixed feed composed of 70% T0 and 30% fresh S. polyrhiza). At the end of the experiment, the survival rate was 100% for all treatments. The best zootechnical parameters were obtained with T1 with a final average weight of 11.67 ± 2.52 g and a consumption index of 1.17 ± 0.30. The highest gross profit margin was also obtained with T1. The lowest economic profitability was obtained.

Urbanization is increasing rapidly in all parts of the world to accommodate the increasing human population but it is having a drastic effect on native flora and fauna. The present study was carried out across a three stage urbanization gradient in and around the city of Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. Observations were made from September 2019 to February 2021 at the selected three sites during COVID 19 pandemic. Point count method was used for bird surveys and Sound pressure (Noise) measurements were made across the three selected sites. The Avian diversity was measured by total species richness, Fisher’s alpha diversity index and Shannon-Wiener diversity index. The Urban centre recorded the highest sound pressure and lowest Avian species richness but as we moved away from the urban centre the noise levels reduced and the avain species richness increased towards the rural areas. This is mainly due to many avian species avoiding urban areas because of increasing noise levels. We also found that the urban bird community is dominated by a few species whereas the rural bird community was much more diverse.

This study aimed to assess the safety and health of contractors in Zamboanga Del Norte, Philip-pines, in terms of workforce, workplace, and work implements. It also aimed to evaluate compliance with occupational health and safety standards regarding occupational safety and health training, a health and safety plan, civil works activities, and heavy equipment operations. It combined quantitative research with a self-created questionnaire that explains and forecasts concepts that can be applied to other people and locations and objectively measures the variable(s) of interest, selected, constructed, and standardized with validity and reliability in mind. The findings revealed that respondents only partially adhered to construction safety and health in personnel, workplace, and work equipment. Occupational health and safety criteria were partially met in occupational safety and health training, health and safety plans, civil works activities, and heavy equipment operations. The Level of Compliance for construction safety and health was also partially met. As a result, it is advised that construction companies will adopt the revised construction safety model.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Miller.), a herbaceous, perennial and aromatic from Apiaceae family, which is used for pharmaceutical, food, health and cosmatic are cultivated in different parts of Iran and much of the world. In this study, the amount of trans-anethole in callus gained from tissue culture of fennel six belonging to different regions of Iran and Turkey have been compared. Tissue culture is a randomized trial. Factor of evaluating in the first node (hypocotyl) has been as explants and hormonal composition of 2,4-D+Kinetin and NAA+BAP was used for callus induction. Callus extracts were extracted by using organic solvent and finally the effective compound was determined, using GC/MS. The results show that the highest percentage of essential oil compounds in callus of E,E 2,4-Decadienal of 46.22% and cineole were 1,8 of the 35.17 percent, respectively. Our results indicate that the derived callus from fennel plants in the MS environment and with herbal hormone has been able to produce volatile compounds.

During the two winter seasons (2016/017 and 2017/018) respectively to evaluate some grain maize genotypes for resistance to stem borer and identify the most tolerance of these genotypes to Stem Borer infestation. Thirteen (STB.G1, STB.G2, STB.G3, STB.G4, STB.G5, STB.G6, STB.G7, STB.G8, STB.G9, STB.G10, STB.G11) maize genotypes were used in this study: with two check of maize variety (check. 1(Mugtama45) and ckeck. 2 (Var.113),). The experiments were arranged in Randomized Complete Block design (RCBD) with three replications. The data collected were used in this study were : Germination percentages, plant population, plant height, ear height, ear length, days to 50% Tasselling, days to 50% silking, ear length, ear diameter, cob diameter, number of rows/ear, number of kernels/row, 100 Kernel weight and Yieldkg/ha. Results showed that the most encouraging genotypes (STB.G 11, STB.G10, STB.G 4, STB.G 6 and STB.G8) of maize production at Kassala state were obtained a high value for potential of grain yield (4132, 3723, 3611, 3302 and 3264kg/ha) respectively, and for the most important of yield components. Among the traits considered, the yield (kg/ha) was the most promising as an indicator of tolerance to stem borer infestation.

The present study demonstrates the ability of GIS and RS in capturing the spatial temporal data. The changing climatic conditions in the country effects the agriculture. The impacts of climate change are not only restricted to the agricultural productivity of the Pakistan but changing climate also impose destructive impacts on the Land use change practices. Three districts of Punjab i.e. Attock, Multan and Gujrat were selected for analysis of climatic effect on wheat production. The time span that is used for analyzing the change in these areas was from 1999-2014. Climatic changes are not always negative ones but sometimes climatic changes are favoring the increased agricultural production. As the change in temperature and rainfall pattern affects the crop conditions, which changes the net production. It is concluded that for real time prediction of crop yield satellite remote sensing could be used for timely management of food crisis in Pakistan as well as in the world.

Extreme weather events are anticipated to increase the existing challenges and generate new combination of vulnerabilities, especially in developing countries. The agricultural sector is the most vulnerable due to overreliance on unpredictable rainfall. This study examined the impact of extreme weather events on urban crop production and the adaptation strategies applied by the farmers. Secondary data were collected through a literature survey and primary data were collected using structured interviews, observations and focus group discussions. A total of 108 crop farmers were interviewed in two wards of Kinondoni District. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 was used to analyze the data and Pearson Chi-square was used to test the statistical significance between variables. The study observed that, farmers perceived extreme weather events including floods (39%), extreme temperatures (36%), and drought (25%). These extreme weather events affected negatively crop production leading damaging of crops and low yields (38%), outbreak of crop pests and disease (38%), drying of water sources (20%), and loss of soil fertility (4%). Crop farmers used various adaptation strategies such as crop diversification (28%), the use of pesticides (23%), changing of cropping patterns and planting calendar (16%), irrigation practices (18%) and replanting (10%). The study recommends for adoption of new farming systems such as vertical farming systems for better output with the use of limited water and land resources.

Catchment degradation has continued to occur globally albeit the presence of Community Forest Associations (CFA) and Water Resource Users Associations (WRUA). Similarly, Kilungu catchment area in Kenya is under the management of the Kenze (CFA) and upper Kaiti (WRUA). This paper examined Kenze CFA and Upper Kaiti WRUA activities by exploring their effectiveness in discharging their statutory functions. This was achieved by carrying out, an exploratory descriptive survey. Data was collected through questionnaires, focus group discussions, 10 key informants’ interviews and direct observations. Descriptive analysis was used. Information was presented in fig.s, tables and percentages. Results showed that upper Kaiti WRUA as more effective in catchment management at moderately (31%) and highly at (37%) as compared to CFA moderately (29%) and highly (5%). In terms of discharging of their statutory functions, Upper Kaiti WRUA was better at a rating of 27% (good) and 23% (very good) as compared to Kenze CFA which was rated at 3% (good) and 6% (very good). This study results implied that Upper Kaiti WRUA was more effective in all aspects of ensuring catchment management as opposed to CFA. In conclusion, a strategy of seizing the opportunities presented by the CFA of being empowered to perform all its activities as required by law with emphasis on the timely preparation and implementation of management plans and WRUA’s continuous improvement should be prioritized. The study recommends new initiatives that improve on the CFA and WRUA activities in order to effectively discharge on their statutory functions.

The study on the Smallholders Socio-Economic Characteristics Oil Palm Value Chain: Constraints and Prospects was conducted in the Littoral region of Cameroon with the used of multi-sampling technique. The study made used of secondary and primary data sources. Data that were collected through survey involved the distribution of structured questionnaires to a sample of 400 smallholders who were purposively selected from two sub-divisions. The data collected through these questionnaires were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Science and Micro Soft Excel, and the interpreted resulted were presented using descriptive method, pie charts and in tables. Results indicated actors in the value chain were faced the constraints of inadequate capital, inadequate storage facilities, and fluctuation in market prices, inadequate roads, among others. Results further indicated that the activity was important as it provided opportunities such as job creation, health enhancement, education enhancement, income amelioration among others to the actors in the value chain.

Acid soils are very common in tea zones. These soils have a pH below 5.0. Below this pH, not only do the soils exhibit toxicity of aluminum and manganese but are deficient of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and molybdenum, hence becoming chemically infertile. Liming is one cheap way of reclaiming these soils. The staple food crops in these tea soils are maize and beans. However the effect of different liming levels on bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and maize (Zea maiys, L.) yield on acid tea-growing ando-humic Nitisol had not before been investigated. A study was therefore conducted to determine the crop response to liming and the appropriate liming level for maize and bean crops in a tea zone soils. The experiment was carried out in Embu County, Kavutiri and Kianjokoma areas, Agro-Ecological Zone (AEZ) UM1. A randomized complete block design with four replications of each lime treatment was used at each site. Lime at rates of 0 (L0), 2.4 (L1), 6 (L2), 8 (L3) t/ha was broadcasted on to 4m x 4m plots and mixed into 0-15cm of soil. There was a significant response to liming for both maize and beans. The maximum maize and beans yield was attained at around liming level L2 (pH 5.5). Above this pH, yields started to decline. The study clearly shows the benefits of soil liming on strongly acid tea soils and also the importance of accurate lime applications.

The ethanol, ethyl acetate, and hexane extracts of the freshwater clam (Corbicula fluminea) were studied for the total phenolics and total flavonoids. Total phenolics and total flavonoids of the extracts were evaluated using Folin-Ciocalteau and Aluminum chloride colorimetric methods respectively. The findings showed that the total phenolics of the ethanol extract (1.67±0.28mg GAE/g of dried sample) were substantially higher than the total phenolics obtained from the ethyl acetate (0.70±0.00mg GAE/g) and hexane extracts (0.56±0.23mg GAE/g). While the total flavonoids in the ethyl acetate extract displayed a slightly higher total flavonoid (43.84±0.92mg QE/g of dried sample) relative to ethanol (30.41±1.34mg QE/g of dried sample) and hexane extracts (20.28±0.00mg QE/g of dried sample). Using ethanol, the highest yield for extraction was obtained. Ethanol is the best solvent among the three – ethanol, ethyl acetate, and hexane in terms of extraction yield and total phenolics. In addition, it can be inferred that the presence of significant amounts of phenolics and flavonoids suggests that freshwater clam is a promising source of antioxidants that provides nourishing proteins and oxidative stress remedies

Intravital microscopy (IVM) is a powerful tool utilized to study cellular behavior over time and space in vivo. Much of our understanding of cell biology has been accomplished using various in vitro and ex vivo methods; however, these studies do not necessarily reflect the natural dynamics of biological processes. Unlike traditional cell culture or fixed tissue imaging, IVM allows for the ultra-fast high-resolution imaging of cellular processes over time and space and were studied in its natural environment. Real-time visualization of biological processes in the context of an intact organism helps maintain physiological relevance and provide insights into the progression of disease, response to treatments or developmental processes.
In this webinar we give an overview of advanced applications of the IVM system in preclinical research. Earliest Galaxies in the JADES Origins Field: Luminosity Function and Cosmic ...Sérgio Sacani
We characterize the earliest galaxy population in the JADES Origins Field (JOF), the deepest
imaging field observed with JWST. We make use of the ancillary Hubble optical images (5 filters
spanning 0.4−0.9µm) and novel JWST images with 14 filters spanning 0.8−5µm, including 7 mediumband filters, and reaching total exposure times of up to 46 hours per filter. We combine all our data
at > 2.3µm to construct an ultradeep image, reaching as deep as ≈ 31.4 AB mag in the stack and
30.3-31.0 AB mag (5σ, r = 0.1” circular aperture) in individual filters. We measure photometric
redshifts and use robust selection criteria to identify a sample of eight galaxy candidates at redshifts
z = 11.5 − 15. These objects show compact half-light radii of R1/2 ∼ 50 − 200pc, stellar masses of
M⋆ ∼ 107−108M⊙, and star-formation rates of SFR ∼ 0.1−1 M⊙ yr−1
. Our search finds no candidates
at 15 < z < 20, placing upper limits at these redshifts. We develop a forward modeling approach to
infer the properties of the evolving luminosity function without binning in redshift or luminosity that
marginalizes over the photometric redshift uncertainty of our candidate galaxies and incorporates the
impact of non-detections. We find a z = 12 luminosity function in good agreement with prior results,
and that the luminosity function normalization and UV luminosity density decline by a factor of ∼ 2.5
from z = 12 to z = 14. We discuss the possible implications of our results in the context of theoretical
models for evolution of the dark matter halo mass function.

Abstract
The wheat aphid species individually and collectively cause severe damage to the wheat crop qualitatively
and quantitatively. The incidence of these aphids is influenced by a number of biotic factors such as host
plant resistance, availability of the natural enemies and the major abiotic factors such as temperature,
humidity and rainfall. In the present investigation, the incidence and abundance of wheat aphid species
were recorded with rapeseed as a perimeter crop. The results showed that wheat was infested by two major
aphid species, bird cherry oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi and green peach aphid, Myzus persicae with
rapeseed as a perimeter crop. The results further suggested that the level of infestation in wheat with
perimeter crop remained low compared to check, influenced by the presence of natural enemies, however,
the level of infestation of M. persicae remained highly influenced by the high level of infestation in
rapeseed. In light of the above experimental results we concluded that the rapeseed influenced the
population of R. padi and deterred S. avenae, however, encouraged M. persicae to infest wheat crop.

Introduction
Wheat (Triticum spp.) is consumed by more than half
of the world’s population as an important staple diet
source and its consumption is expected to rise much
faster compared to other cereals (Johnson et al.,
1978; Kearney, 2010). It supplies food to about 40%
population of the world. An estimated of 23% area of
the world is under wheat cultivation and an important
component of international trade (Istvan, 2006). It is
a principal source of food with the protein contents of
13% (Ahmad and Shaikh, 2003).
In Pakistan, a number of factors such as outdated seed
bed preparation, late sowing, contaminated seed,
inappropriate use of fertilizer, drought, pathological
diseases and insect pests are responsible for the major
losses in wheat production (El-Gizawy, 2009). Insect
pests are regarded as a major limiting factor which
reduces per hectare yield (Khattak et al., 2007). Among
the major insect pests, aphids as sucking pests infest
various fruits, vegetables and field crops, including
wheat (Aheer et al., 2008). Aphids as a pest have been
recorded to reduce yield by 10-90%, depending upon
the infestation level (Aheer et al., 1993). A total of 15
aphids per plant cause a grain yield loss of 30 to 40%
(Kieckhefer & Gallner, 1992).
In Pakistan, different aphid species, including
Rhopalosiphum padi L (Aphididae: Homoptera)
infest wheat crop (Shah et al., 2006). It is normally
observed on stems and leaves of the wheat plant
(Wains et al., 2008). The infested leaves consequently
become pale and wilted (Khan et al., 2012). Myzus
persicae S (Aphididae: Homoptera) commonly known
as the green peach aphid, infest large number of plant
species, suck phloem sap from the plants (Malone et
al., 1999). In case of its attack on rapeseed with
prolonged infestation cause greater yield losses
(Chattopadhyay et al., 2005). Out of a total six species
infesting rapeseed, Myzus persicae was found the
most abundant after Brevicoryne brassicae, L
(Aphididae: Homoptera) (Mushtaq et al., 2013).
A number of management practices have been
employed such as chemical, biological, cultural and
host plant resistance to counter aphid attack (Scholler
et al., 1997).
Early season cultivation and chemical control of aphids
has been reported to increase the grain yield of wheat
crop (Shahzad et al., 2007). Among the cultural
practices many researchers have validated the use of
wheat-oilseed rape intercropping as beneficial for the
wheat crop and keeping the aphid population low due to
the encouragement of natural enemies by the availability
of floral nectaries and enhance their fitness (Landis et
al., 2000; Irvin & Hoddle, 2007).
The present studies were designed to see the effects of
rapeseed as a perimeter crop in wheat. Aphid species
infesting rapeseed and wheat were identified and
their incidence and abundance was also plotted
against environmental factors such as maximum,
minimum temperature and relative humidity.
Materials and methods
Location and Experimental Layout
The experiment was carried out in the experimental
farm area at the Nuclear Institute for Agriculture &
Biology (NIAB), Faisalabad. The experiment was laid
out on an area of 300×100-foot. The wheat variety,
Galaxy-2013 was cultivated in the second week of
December, 2017 with a tractor drill in the central area of
the experimental field. Afterwards the rapeseed variety,
Punjab Sarsoon was sown as a perimeter crop on a 5 feet
wide path all along the four sides of the wheat field with
a hand drill. The row to row distance in wheat was 6
inches, whereas, in rapeseed it was 1.5 feet.
The rapeseed strip was separated from wheat by 2.5 feet
path. The wheat was sown in 10 homogeneous size bed
of 25x80-foot. The bed to bed distance was 2.5 feet.
Agronomic Practices
Weeds in the wheat crop were controlled by the
application of stomp 330 EC as pre-emergence
weedicide. The fertilizers, DAP and urea, were used in
recommended rates to all the plots. No insecticides
were applied in the experiment.
Identification and Population trend of wheat Aphid
species
All the aphid species collected during pest scouting
from the field as soon as their incidence started and
were identified in the laboratory under the stereo
microscope using an aphid identification key.

The population trend of the aphid infesting wheat
crop was recorded after 4 day intervals. The data were
recorded by counting of aphids per tiller on three
randomly selected plants per replicate from five
different randomly distributed plots.
Environmental Factors
Environmental data viz., minimum, maximum
temperatures and relative humidity were recorded by
mini weather station with data logger, installed at the
NIAB experimental area.
Analysis of the Data
The data were pooled and means were calculated. The
data were further subjected to ANOVA using (Statistix
8.1, Tallahassee, Florida, USA) and the separation of
means was carried out by LSD at 0.05 confidence
level. The graphs showing aphid peaks corresponding
to temperature and relative humidity were drawn by
Microsoft Excel, 2013.
Results
In the present studies, wheat crop protected by the
perimeter rapeseed crop was infested by two major
species of aphids, cherry oat aphid, R. padi and green
peach aphid, M. persicae, identified in the laboratory
in NIAB. The incidence of R. padi in wheat started in
the third week of February with the mean population
density of 4.93/tiller. The population keep on
increasing and reached its seasonal peak of
40.73/tiller in the fourth week of February.
Afterwards, the population of the aphid started to
decline with the change in temperature and maturity
level, reaching to 3.25 at its minimum level in the
second week of March. As far as the population of
green peach aphid, M. persicae is concerned its
incidence started on the third week of February, with
the population density of 0.73/tiller. The mean
population of this aphid reached to its seasonal peak
level in the second week of March, with a population
density of 35.60/tiller. Afterwards, the population of
the aphid started to decline and reached 3.80/tiller,
lowest in the season (Table 1).

The rapeseed crop as perimeter crop was infested by
two major aphid species, cabbage aphid, B. brassicae
and green peach aphid, M. persicae. The infestation
of B. brassicae was recorded in the third week of
February and after increasing trend with some
fluctuation reached its peak level of 90.75/tiller in the
second week of March. A steady decline was seen
afterwards and the mean population reached to its
lowest seasonal level of 5.69/tiller.
The incidence of M. persicae on rapeseed started in
the second week of February, with a population
density of 6.50/tiller.
The population keep on increasing at a variable increase
rate and reached a peak seasonal population density of
130/tiller in the second week of March. A steady decline
was seen afterwards and lowest population was recorded
in the third week of March (Table 1).

The share of infestation in wheat protected by
rapeseed as a perimeter crop, by R. padi and M.
persicae remained 59 and 41%, respectively, whereas
the total share of infestation in rapeseed by B.
brassicae and M. persicae remained 52 and 48%,
respectively (Fig. 1).

The infestation level of the aphids was also influenced
by the environmental factors such as temperature and
relative humidity. The data revealed that the
temperature range of 20-25°C was optimum for the
population build-up of aphids such as R. padi, B.
brassicae and M. persicae in both wheat and
rapeseed (Fig. 2, 3).
The relative humidity range of 50-80% corresponded
to the peak aphid population for all the
aforementioned aphid species (Fig.4, 5).

Discussion
In Pakistan wheat is attacked by a number of aphid
species, namely, Rhopalosiphum padi, Sitobion avenae,
Schizaphis graminum (Shah et al., 2006) and Myzus
persicae (Mushtaq et al., 2013).

In an investigation M. persicae was found the most
abundant aphid with 34% infestation followed by B.
brassicae with 33% infestation (Mushtaq et al., 2013). In
the present studies, we recorded R. padi and M. persicae
on wheat, whereas the incidence of B. brassicae and M.
persicae on rape seed which is in partial and full
agreement with the earlier researchers respectively.
In our studies the incidence of aphids started in
February which is in agreement with (Muhammad et
al., 2013; Pervez & Ali, 2000). Our data further
revealed that the peak population of aphids,
Rhopalosiphum padi, B. brassicae and M. persicae in
wheat and rapeseed attained peak level in March
which is in complete agreement with (Abbas et al.,
2014; Muhammad et al., 2013; Akhter et al., 2010;
Wains et al., 2010) who also recorded peak aphid
population in the month of March. The decline in
aphid population was observed in the second week of
March which is in agreement with (Muhammad et al.,
2013; Khan et al., 2012; Tabassum et al., 2012).
We also noticed that population of R. padi in wheat
with rapeseed as a perimeter crop remained
comparatively low. This low population may have
been influenced by the presence of natural enemies
encouraged by the availability of floral resources of
perimeter crop which provide nectars and pollens for
better fitness of natural enemies (Landis et al., 2000;
Irvin and Hoddle, 2007). In addition, Sitobian
avenae was not recorded in the wheat-oil seed rape.
These results are in total agreement with Nassab et
al., 2013. However, it was also noticed that
population of M. persicae also developed in the wheat
crop compared to the check where the negligible
aphid population was noticed. The presence of M.
persicae may have shifted from the heavily infested
perimeter crop.
Temperature and humidity are other important factors
which affect the population dynamics of aphids. In the
current study aphid population started to decline in the
second week of March and reached negligible number
or disappeared from the wheat field. Similar to our
studies (Khan et al., 2012) reported a downward trend
in aphid population with an increase in temperature
and maturity of wheat crop.
Conclusion
After analysis of the data we reached the conclusion
that rapeseed perimeter crop kept population of R.
padi comparatively low and barred Sitobian avenae
from the field, however, at the same time it also
provided M. persicae an opportunity to shift to wheat
as an alternate host which was not noticed in check.
