IMPACT OF FACEBOOK USAGE ON
THEACADEMIC GRADES: A CASE STUDY
ABSTRACT
 The purpose of this study is to investigate if there is any relationship
between FB use and student’s GPA
 hypothesis that FB usage has a negative effect on the academic grades
of students
 Data collection modes: self-administered questionnaires completed by
over 100 female students from the department of Information
Technology (IT) in the College of Computer and Information Sciences
at King Saud University (KSU)
 Results: 55% students feel that FB and SNS have adverse effect. So,
our hypothesis has a partial support

 Facebook was originally formed for college students under certain restrictions
 2006, its founder has decided for open public access
 Features: form profiles, make friends, Public posts, share interest, knowledge,
consider friends etc…..
Motivation
 SNS become the norm of life, specially college students
 According to info graphics:
1.) 52% are of FB user, 36% uses Twitter and rest % of other
SNS
2.) Median age of FB user is 22%
3.)Big motivation is to connect others and to socialize.
4) FB creates addiction, anxiety, harassing language and lack
of supervision creates an “anything goes” wild-wild-west
Litrature Review
 Review is focused in two dimension that is supporting and not
supporting to our hypothesis.
 SUPPORTED
 In 11 and 12 Authors reported students who use facebook have
lower GPAs than non users.
 Authors surveyed 219 students at Ohio State University ( 102
undergraduate and 117 graduate) and reported 85% Undergraduate
and 52% graduate are of Facebook Users. There GPA ranges 3.0 to
3.5 of FB users than 3.5 to 4.0 of non users.
Litrature Review
 Karpinsky stated the student who invest more time on FB have lower grades
 In 13 Authors conducted study on undergraduate students on time spending on
their studies at Lulea University of Tech at Sweden. According to them 239
undergraduate students who use FB terribly have less grades.
 In his research [14], Reynol Junco concluded that time spent on Facebook was
strongly and significantly negatively related to overall GPA,
 Surveyed students were from universities in northeastern United States. A total
of1839 surveys were completed online, and the results showed that students
who spend more time on Facebook and/or check their Facebook page often,
tend to have lower GPAs.
Not Supported
 Melissa Rachel at Manchester college--- FB was a useful tool and
also reported that male used FB per day less than Females.
 Ishaf et.al.[16] explored the relationship between SNS practices and
academic performance of the students ( 1000 sample, Pakistan
Universities, private and public both) and reported that ;
Studying habits of the students were found to be significantly
affected by the time spend on leisure activities, time spent on
Internet, time spent on using SNSs and basic purpose of using SNS.
 From black universities of Southern US it is predicted that
females have higher grades than males along with max time
spending on SNS, so there is no association of SNS with
academics.
 Chuck Martin---- The findings suggest that the most popular
online network was Facebook. In fact, 96% of all university
students use Facebook on a typical day. The study found that
there was no correlation between heavy social media usage
and student’s grades.

Discussion
 We have categorized Facebook user who spend time less and more than 30
minutes in a day.
 We found 62% fall under who don’t use facebook and 38% who use
facebook comparatively have lower grades rather non-FB users.

performance

 In addition 74% participant claim that they don’t have enough study time
 28% spent their leisure time on studying and 94% of the participant think
that their GPA has improved.
Conclusion
 The main objective of this study is to explore the
potential negative effects of Facebook usage on
students academic performance, usually measured
by GPA
 Conflicting studies on the topic and that the question
needs extensive research.
 More research work base
Hypothesis Revisited
 The study findings show that55% of the students feel that the use of
Facebook or SNS could be negatively related to their academic
performance.
 LIMITATIONS
First, the academic performance was measured using only data from female
students
Second, collected data were only from students in the final year of their degree
Finally, the following variables: (1) time spent on leisure activities; (2) time
spent on studying; were not measured accurately (in terms of number of
hours)
Future work
 we plan to improve the current study by focusing on
the time spent on studying, leisure activities, and
how they are related to psychological perspective in
order to comprehend the interference

  • 2. ABSTRACT  The purpose of this study is to investigate if there is any relationship between FB use and student’s GPA  hypothesis that FB usage has a negative effect on the academic grades of students  Data collection modes: self-administered questionnaires completed by over 100 female students from the department of Information Technology (IT) in the College of Computer and Information Sciences at King Saud University (KSU)  Results: 55% students feel that FB and SNS have adverse effect. So, our hypothesis has a partial support

  • 4. Motivation  SNS become the norm of life, specially college students  According to info graphics: 1.) 52% are of FB user, 36% uses Twitter and rest % of other SNS 2.) Median age of FB user is 22% 3.)Big motivation is to connect others and to socialize. 4) FB creates addiction, anxiety, harassing language and lack of supervision creates an “anything goes” wild-wild-west
  • 5. Litrature Review  Review is focused in two dimension that is supporting and not supporting to our hypothesis.  SUPPORTED  In 11 and 12 Authors reported students who use facebook have lower GPAs than non users.  Authors surveyed 219 students at Ohio State University ( 102 undergraduate and 117 graduate) and reported 85% Undergraduate and 52% graduate are of Facebook Users. There GPA ranges 3.0 to 3.5 of FB users than 3.5 to 4.0 of non users.
  • 6. Litrature Review  Karpinsky stated the student who invest more time on FB have lower grades  In 13 Authors conducted study on undergraduate students on time spending on their studies at Lulea University of Tech at Sweden. According to them 239 undergraduate students who use FB terribly have less grades.  In his research [14], Reynol Junco concluded that time spent on Facebook was strongly and significantly negatively related to overall GPA,  Surveyed students were from universities in northeastern United States. A total of1839 surveys were completed online, and the results showed that students who spend more time on Facebook and/or check their Facebook page often, tend to have lower GPAs.
  • 7. Not Supported  Melissa Rachel at Manchester college--- FB was a useful tool and also reported that male used FB per day less than Females.  Ishaf et.al.[16] explored the relationship between SNS practices and academic performance of the students ( 1000 sample, Pakistan Universities, private and public both) and reported that ; Studying habits of the students were found to be significantly affected by the time spend on leisure activities, time spent on Internet, time spent on using SNSs and basic purpose of using SNS.
  • 8.  From black universities of Southern US it is predicted that females have higher grades than males along with max time spending on SNS, so there is no association of SNS with academics.  Chuck Martin---- The findings suggest that the most popular online network was Facebook. In fact, 96% of all university students use Facebook on a typical day. The study found that there was no correlation between heavy social media usage and student’s grades.
  • 9. Participant  Male and Female students of age between 20 and 22.  Self administered questionnaire

Discussion  We have categorized Facebook user who spend time less and more than 30 minutes in a day.  We found 62% fall under who don’t use facebook and 38% who use facebook comparatively have lower grades rather non-FB users.  18% of the students have accepted that SNS have negative relation with performance  37% believed that it could be  In addition 74% participant claim that they don’t have enough study time  28% spent their leisure time on studying and 94% of the participant think that their GPA has improved.
  • 14. Conclusion  The main objective of this study is to explore the potential negative effects of Facebook usage on students academic performance, usually measured by GPA  Conflicting studies on the topic and that the question needs extensive research.  More research work base
  • 15. Hypothesis Revisited  The study findings show that55% of the students feel that the use of Facebook or SNS could be negatively related to their academic performance.  LIMITATIONS First, the academic performance was measured using only data from female students Second, collected data were only from students in the final year of their degree Finally, the following variables: (1) time spent on leisure activities; (2) time spent on studying; were not measured accurately (in terms of number of hours)
  • 16. Future work  we plan to improve the current study by focusing on the time spent on studying, leisure activities, and how they are related to psychological perspective in order to comprehend the interference
