This research proposal examines the relationship between Facebook addiction and academic performance among students at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) in Jamshoro, Pakistan. It hypothesizes that IBA students are spending excessive time on Facebook that distracts from their studies, resulting in lower grades and job prospects. The study aims to evaluate the impact of Facebook usage on student performance. It will use a survey questionnaire to collect data from 80 final-year undergraduate students on their Facebook habits and academic results. The findings could help address a problem of declining studies due to excessive social media use, which is unique to the local context compared to international studies on the topic.

THE GRATIFICATION AND MISUSE PATTERNS OF FACEBOOK USE AMONG UNDERGRADUATE S...American Research Thoughts
This study explored the consequences of Facebook use in the lives of undergraduate
students and to what extent this social network site was subjective to their everyday requirements. In
this respect 100 college students from Govt. College Dharamshala were randomly chosen and after
reviewing several studies on Facebook use, a questionnaire containing 20 close-ended questions was
framed and circulated them in their free times. The collected data was tabled and analyzed with the
assistance of IBM SPSS 20. Finally, the study summarizes that the undergraduates access Facebook
for various purposes in their everyday life in which, academic search, online shopping, developing
(social) relations, sharing data, chatting, and killing loneliness are primary. The study also confirms
and supports the results of previous studies that the consumption of Facebook influences students’
academic, health and social life both negative and positive manners. It is alarmed that if the
dependency of students on Facebook is not taken seriously by parents, teachers and policymakers, it
would influence their social relationship, health status, moral attitude and academic performance to a
large manner in coming years.

Should Gorden Secondary School use Facebook in the classroom?Betty Wakia (白丽)
In the fast-growing digital world, the influence of social media on people’s lives cannot be ignored. Social media like facebook are widely accepted and used by students for communication and other purposes. Since the introduction of the mobile phone in 2007, facebook has become a popular tool for communication among students in Papua New Guinea (PNG). They then quickly grasp information, post pictures, and opinions through facebook anytime, anywhere and even achieve the effect of a live broadcast on their mobile devices. The era of the mobile internet has opened the door for PNG's social development and provided more help for the development of various social sectors. These convenient and fast communication methods are bound to be welcomed by the students. Despite this, it is argued that in PNG, the potential of using facebook for learning and teaching purposes in the classroom remains controversial.
Should Gorden Secondary School use Facebook in the classroom?
Research Proposal
1. Research Proposal:
“Facebook Addiction and IBA Students”
1) Introduction:
Facebook, a name almost everyone is aware of, and day by day becoming most
important part of every one’s life, and World’s most popular growing social media
networking service. In February 2004 a collage sophomore Mark Zuckerberg and his
few friends launched their group assignment a simple program that enables user to
connect and share digital files between them, the Facebook was initially operated from
Harvard University illegally and Mark Zuckerberg was charged and penalties for
breaching university security system , making un-authorized access to university server
and breaking university system, but later the charges were removed and allowed to
operate the system through university server to share notes and assignments, later it
was launched through world wide web and attracted more than 2000 visitors in just 1
hour, the Facebook is now owned and operated by Facebook inc. by Mark Zuckerberg
and went for initial public offering last year at end of 2012. As of September 2012,
Facebook has over one billion active users, more than half of whom use Facebook on
a mobile device, a multilingual social site with more than 70 language support program,
The company’s 2012 IPO and valuation of about $100 billion are among the largest in
tech history with annual revenue reported $ 5.1 billion in year 2012. [Internet Reference –
Wikipedia].Facebook is Ranked 2nd most growing website by Alexa internet after Google
Inc. [Internet Reference –Alexa Internet]
The trend of Facebook is growing day by day, CNN Reports 1.o6 billion users by
30/01/2013, Anyone can easily join Facebook by providing his e-mail address and
personal information, Users must register before using the site, after which they may
create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including
automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join
common-interest user groups, organized by workplace, school or college, or other
characteristics, and categorize their friends into lists such as "People from Work" or
2. "Close Friends". Each day Facebook popularity and growth is increasing, The Impact of
Facebook on the students goes far beyond technological innovations and the ability to
build relationships. It has led young people to publicly announce their personal
information without being worried about any consequences. Having such huge numbers
of users always keep Facebook in debate of wither it will harm personal performance in
career building or studies or not? A question which is not satisfactorily answered yet.
[Internet Reference –Wikipedia]
Students have perceived Facebook as one of most important part of their social life and
find it only reliable way to interact with people, that’s why large number of student
capitalize their most of time using Facebook, which harms their studies, After almost 8
hours spending in university students spend most of remaining time using Facebook,
leaving none for studies, Students seems to addicted to Facebook, which is seriously
affecting their class performance, and grades. It is observed that the more students feel
that Facebook is relevant to their social aspect of university life the more time student
will spend on Facebook. Students use Facebook to cure a simple ailment, Boredom, and
to satisfy their entertainment needs.
2) Background of Study:
Worldwide studies revealed that almost 90% of students are using Facebook, the
amount of time average student spend is 106 minutes per day, the average student visit
Facebook 6 times a day, and stay for 24 minutes each visit. [Internet Reference – USA Today
Educate]
Like any other country Pakistan’s students are also addicted to Facebook so do IBA
Jamshoro students, Although situation in Pakistan is bit change than rest of countries as
not all of students in Pakistan are in easy access of modern technology like smart
phones, I pads, but still they are capitalizing most of their time in browsing internet and
using social media networking technology, specially Facebook. In the IBA Jamshoro,
Students are observed decline in their class performance and studies as mis-use of
Facebook among students increased which is distracting students from their studies,
Students are killing most of their time using Facebook, finding friends, chatting on
Facebook (text messages, voice chatting or video talks), posting updates regarding their
3. daily life activities, uploading photos and videos, checking in likes and comments of
their posts, playing online games on Facebook, making conversation on various groups
and pages, the time which they should give to their studies, this results in low
interaction with their relative subjects, keeping student knowledge at low, with up to no
practical experience, students are not even willing to complete their home assignments
and projects turning students less competent to compete in job market with their
competing students from IBA Karachi, SZABIST, IBA Sukkur or Quaid-e-Azam
University Islamabad and many other private and public business schools which is
really alarming and reducing IBA Jamshoro share in job market.
3) Research Objectives:
The main objectives of this study are following:
To find out the relationship between time spent on Facebook and studies.
To evaluate the impact of Facebook on studies of student (MBA/FINAL/PASS).
4) Problem Statement:
IBA Students are observed using more and more Facebook which is distracting them
from their studies. After university classes and having lunch and doing some rest
students are left with very little time to study which most of them spend on using
Facebook, this seriously affects their studies and over all class performance, it is a
serious issue which cannot be neglected, as it is already observed in various studies
worldwide that more time a student spend on Facebook less will be the grades and it is
not only matter of grade, it’s a matter of overall student’s performance, his career
building and job market.
IBA Students are victims of miss-use of Facebook, less concentrated on their studies and
low job market; this addiction can lead to their future destruction.
5) Research Methodology:
The Study will be conducted on qualitative as well as quantitative basis, from MBA
(final) PASS students in IBA Department Jamshoro. The data which is to be collected
will be primary data, through interviewing semi structured questionnaires for the
4. purpose of completion of class assignment for Business Research Methodology, under
the supervision of our Subject Teacher Sir: Vishnu Parmar, and several central tendency
measures will be applied to analyze data including like mean, median, mode etc. Data
will be collected through sampling, total sample size would be of 80 students from class
MBA (Final) PASS, Institute of Business Administration, and University of Sindh
Jamshoro only, comprising of 50 male students and 30 female students.
6) Rationale OF Study:
The study related to Facebook use and Student’s study is already conducted worldwide
in different countries and there is tens of study highlighting side effects of Facebook on
studies, but there is no such study which is conducted in reference to Facebook,
specially on university level, targeting IBA Students in University of Sindh Jamshoro,
the researches made on worldwide basis are very much different from this in Pakistan as
education system and student approach to Facebook and study is very different in
Pakistan, especially in University of Sindh Jamshoro, so this is going to be a very new
approach made in this perspective and in comparison to a specific class, with a limited
universe of research, a comparison between Facebook addiction and study of IBA
Students.
7) Limitations:
There can be various possible limitations to this study, depending upon the situation
and nature of the respondent; few possible limitations are listed as follow;
The respondent may not give true answers.
The respondent might be interested in studies himself; even he will not be
using Facebook.
The education can also be effected by one’s personal understanding level.
The distraction from education can possibly be from some other un-
determinable factors, like physical health, personal life problems or any other
factors.
5. The decrease in job market share can be due to various other factors like
inflation, un-stable economic and political conditions, decreasing good will of
university due to unstable education environment.
Thus, these possible limitations can create hindrances to accumulate true data
and to analyses the data so that to reach on true conclusion.
