5. The Ayurvedic view of immunity is based on the concept of inherited reserve
and acquired reserve. In the Ayurvedic Classics, it is literally known as
'vyadhikshmatva' or 'self-avoidance of disease'. Vyadhi-kshmatva is two words–
Vyadhi + Kshamatva where Vyadhi means 'Disease' or 'Illness' and Kshamatva
means 'to resist'.
Chakradatta defined immunity in two terms व्यावि बल विरोवित्वम्- capacity of
the body to fight against the manifested disease
व्यावि उत्पािक प्रविबंिकत्वम् -Capacity of the body to resist pathogenic process
of forming disease. CAKRAPANI on CHARAKA SUTRA STHANA 28/7
6. Immunity of the person is known by his strength only बला denotes the
strength of the mind, the body and it's components
तत्र बलेन स्स्थरोपवचतमांसता सिवचेष्टास्वप्रवतघातः स्वरिणवप्रसािो बाह्यानामाभ्यन्तराणां
च करणानामात्मकार्वप्रवतपवि र्विवत || (Susrutha samhitha sutra sthana 15/24)
According to CHARAKA 3 types of Bala
Sahajam- may be considered as innate immunity in Ayurveda present since
birth, Kalajam - dependent on seasonal variations and the individual’s age.
Yukthikritham - considered as acquired immunity
7. Ojas or Oja literally means vitality, vigor, luster, power, bodily strength, energy.
In Ayurveda Bala, prakriti and sleshma are synonyms for ojas. Charaka -
sleshma in it's prakrita avstha - strength, immunity Sushrutha-ojas is the fine
essence of sabda dhatus, it makes immunity in body Charaka - ojas is one of the
pranayatanas which means if ojas is destroyed the human life also perish
