or ethnicity by law enforcement personnel as
a key factor in deciding whether to engage in
enforcement
• Aliens - somebody who does not belong to or
does not feel accepted by a group or society
• Sponsor – a person who vouches or is
responsible for a person or a thing

5. Timeline of Immigration in the U.S
1790: Congress makes a law so that any free white person could apply for
citizenship after 2 years of residency
1798: Requires 14 years of residency before being able to apply as a citizen.
1864: Contract Labor Law allowed recruiting for foreign labor
1868: African Americans gain citizenship after 13th Amendment
1880: U.S population is 50,155,783. More than 5.2 million immigrants enter
the country between 1880 and 1890
1892: Ellis Island opened to immigrants on the East Coast
1882: Chinese Exclusion Act
1940: Provided for finger printing and registering for all aliens.
1950: Grounds for exclusion and departure are expanded. All aliens are
required to report their addresses.
