Identifying investment opportunities for livestock feed
resources development in the Eastern Africa Sub-Region, ILRI

2. WHAT MAKES ETHIO-FEED PRODCUTS DIFFERNT AND
PREFERABLE
i) Production of TMR (two in one) and
Concentrate in loose and block ( MNB) form
ii) Use of modern effective micro-organism (EM) bio-
technology in feed products
iii) Convert poorly utilized or wasted agro-industrial
& other resources into quality and affordable feed
products
iv) Pilot different business partnership models for
production and marketing
v) Produce mineral blocks and substitute importation
vi) Organize practical training in feed production and
management
4. Partnership with Smallholders
Ethio-Feed partnership model with smallholders
& SMEs
a) Supply of feed ingredients, joint production
and marketing of products ( eg. Wonji Youth
Group)
b) Utilization of locally available agro-industrial
bi-products and production of quality and
affordable products mainly for ruminant
animals
c) Provision of training and technology
5. Major Constraints
1. Inconsistent supply of feed ingredients ( ie. high
price change and shortage of common ones)
2. middle men controlling the feed ingredient
market
3. less popularization of non-conventional feed
products (ie pellets and TMR)
4. Depending on limited types of conventional
feed ingredients (wheat bran, nug seed cake etc)
and products (ie. Concentrate)
5. VAT on feed products ( except poultry)
6. ban on feed export
6. Large vs Small Scale Plant/Facility
Large scale
• Advantages:
- large volume and scale of
production
- high performance and better
facility, machines and equipment
- Preferred by commercial farms
- have big brand name
Disadvantages:
- Require high investment and capital
- high production cost
- high operation and maintenance
costs
- time taking to maintain breakage
- less flexibility in feed formulation
Small scale
• Advantages:
- require less investment and
capital
- More possibility to utilize local
resources as feed ingredients
- Flexibility in decision making
- Less production and maintenance
costs
- Easy operation and maintenance
of machines and equipment
Disadvantage:
- limited production in given time
- difficulty to meet the demand for
commercial farms
7. Simple Feed Formulation and Self Assessment Tools
Simple Animal Feed Exoteric “SAFE” software package is
developed. www.safeanimalfeed.org
Main functions:
a)Feed formulation and management versions both in English
and Amharic.
b) Interchangeable feed formulation menus using manual and
least cost formulation
c) stock inventory tracking and warehouse management
system in place
d) task inventory calendar and tracker in place
d) self-assessment tools for good manufacturing practice
(GMP), hazard and critical control point (HACCP) and social
and environmental impact (S- EIA) sensitive issues in place
The software is developed by Beruk yemane and Tsega Kassay with
full support and collaboration by ACDI/VOCA, VDFACA and EAFIA
