This document discusses using artificial intelligence and geographic information systems to automatically map soils in Portugal. Specifically, it aims to 1) predict soil classes in currently unmapped areas of Portugal and 2) harmonize soil legends across regions with different soil mapping classifications in Portugal and Spain. It notes that while soil surveys have been done, map coverage and consistency between classifications is lacking. The project, AutoMAPticS, will use artificial neural networks trained on existing soil maps and data to generate new, more detailed and consistent soil maps at a national level. It addresses challenges like data resolution, model parameters, and geographical transferability.

Mapping and Monitoring Spatial-Temporal Cover Change of Prosopis Species Colo...inventionjournals
ABSTRACT: This study integrates Gis and remote sensing to detect, quantify and monitor the rate at which Prosopis species colonization has been taking place since its introduction. Multi-date Landsat 30m resolution imageries covering a period of 25 years were classified into four classes i.e. Prosopis species dominated canopy, mixed woodland, grass land and bush land and finally bare land and agricultural fields. Change detection analysis was performed using 10% threshold to identify and quantify areas where change or No change has occurred. The results indicate that the area under bare land and agricultural fields decreased at a rate of 18.22% per year from 29% in 1985 to 3% in 1990. Between 2005 and 2010 it decreased from 9% in 2005 to 5% in 2010 at a rate of 8.94% per year. Prosopis species colonization has been increasing since 1985 where it was at 0% increasing to 51% in 1990 at a rate of 58.18% per year. Between 2005 and 2010 it decreased from 56% in 2005 to stand at 44% in 2010 at a rate of 4.34% per year. The study found out that there is no threat of desertification in the study area as a result of Prosopis species colonizing the landscape. More studies to be done to identify sustainable method of controlling Prosopis species colonization to avoid more loss of agricultural land and grazing fields.

Landscape is both a physical reality and the representation that we make of it. It is the face of a land with all its natural and anthropological elements and, at the same time, the feelings and emotions that it arouses in us when we see it. Therefor the European Landscape Convention indicates that assessment of all these different dimensions that exist in landscapes should be considered by public authorities while adopting policies and measures at local, regional, national and international level for protecting, managing and planning landscapes throughout Europe.
With this situation in mind, GEOLAND – an Erasmus+ KA2 Higher Education project -focuses on NATURA 2000 sites, with as goal to establish a learning path for the HE students and professors in order to apply their geospatial analysis knowledge in Landscape monitoring and protection, using digital skills like public participation GIS, and low-cost geoinformatic. In particular the main aim of the project is to develop a web based GIS platform where numerous geospatial data may be uploaded, analyzed and students' opinion about landscape will be asked through questionnaires and crowdsourcing.
The project will thus provide the opportunity to students and professors, being interested in definition and implementation of landscape policies, to play an active part in setting sustainability indicators of desirable landscape quality objectives (LQOs). In addition, GEOLAND will attempt to train the future employees to identify and summarize the environmental and cultural stratification in the examined landscapes through a sophisticated GIS oriented Landscape Character Assessment (LCA) methodology. . In this direction, the project will develop a new methodological framework for monitoring Landscape tailored to the needs of the new digital era, safeguarding thus the inclusive nature of learning opportunities. Moreover, the project will provide training content matching the digital education needs.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

AutoMAPticS – Automatic Mapping of Soils
Introduction
Knowledge about the spatial distribution of soil types and properties is crucial for the
assessment of their ability to support a range of services, from food production, to
biodiversity and pollution buffering. Whilst soil surveys have been carried out in
many countries, the area coverage and scale of resulting soil maps are far from
being ideal for planning applications at national level (Dobos et al., 2006).
Additionally, the lack of consistency between soil classifications and legends across
countries contributes towards a slow progression in integrating soil datasets, even in
Europe (ESBN, 2005).
GIS together with artificial intelligence (AI) maximize the information content of
existing soil maps by learning the rules that have, more or less explicitly, led to the
mapping of soil classes across the landscape, and then use that knowledge to
predict the spatial distribution of soil classes or properties at similar resolutions.
Thus, one of the main objectives of AutoMAPticS , a project partiallly based on the
development of artificial neural network (ANN) models, is to predict soil classes in (i)
currently unmapped areas of Portugal, and (ii) harmonise soil legends across
regions with distinct soil mapping classifications, using Portuguese and Spanish soil
spatial datasets to a) improve the level of transnational data integration and b)
assess existing data.
