IFPRI Research in Ethiopia Supports Agricultural Development
1. IFPRI in Ethiopia
Priorities
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) in
eastern and southern Africa engages in research, capacity
strengthening, and advocacy related to the most pressing
issues facing the region. IFPRI’s regional focus aligns with
the tenets of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture
Development Program (CAADP) which seeks to: extend the
area under sustainable land management and reliable
water-control systems; improve market access; increase
food security; and improve agricultural research, technology
dissemination, adoption, and education.
The IFPRI presence in eastern and southern Africa also
includes country strategy support programs in Ethiopia,
Malawi, Mozambique, and Uganda. The Ethiopia Strategy
Support Program (ESSP) is a collaborative program
undertaken by IFPRI and the Ethiopian Development
Research Institute. The core purpose of ESSP is to help
improve the policy-making process in Ethiopia. Increasing
the capacity of Ethiopian institutions to undertake sound
economic analysis linked to current issues, and improving
public information and dialogue, form the cornerstone of
evidence-based policy-making. This is achieved through four
key activities: 1) Collaborative research; 2) Robust
knowledge management; 3) Capacity strengthening and
increased knowledge dissemination and 4) Enhanced
communications and institutional linkages.
