Modelling – Ventilation

P#3 Ventilation effectiveness
Meet ASHRAE 62.1 2013 rates - mechanically
or, if outdoor air quality allows, naturally
Do not exceed 800ppm CO2
Commissioning
O#15 Increased ventilation
Exceed ASHRAE rates by 30%
O#16 Humidity control
Relative humidity 30-50%
Rates typically less onerous than CIBSE
and BCO, esp. at higher densities:
CIBSE Guide A: 10l/s/p in offices
BCO 2014: 12-15l/s/p at 1p/10m2
CO2: CIBSE Guides A & B:
800-1000ppm as common indicator
International equivalent:
CEN EN 15251–2007 Annex B and CEN
EN 13779–2007, excl. Section 7.3, 7.6,
A.16, A.17.
BS EN 13779:2007 air quality classes:
IDA4 "low": <6 l/s/p, 1550-1600ppm
IDA3 "moderate": 6-10l/s/p, 1150-
1200ppm
IDA2 "medium": 10-15l/s/p, 850-
900ppm
IDA1 "high": >15l/s/p, 700-750ppm

Alternative Adherence Path:
ISO 7730:2005 and/or CEN EN
15251:2007.
CIBSE Guide A and TM52:
Heated and cooled buildings: Operative
temperature and summer PMV (aiming for
zero)
Naturally ventilated / free running
buildings: summer operative temperature
based on adaptive model, with upper limit
dependent on running mean of outdoor
temperature
P#76 Thermal comfort
Mechanically ventilated spaces: ASHRAE
55-2013 5.3 Standard comfort zone
compliance or
Naturally ventilated spaces: ASHRAE 55-
2013 5.4 Adaptive comfort model
O#21 (air) Displacement ventilation
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to
demonstrate ASHRAE 55-2013
compliance
O#83 Radiant thermal comfort
ASHRAE criteria met by radiant heating /
cooling

Modelling – Lighting
© Delos Living, LLC 2014
Generally aligns with CIBSE and
Society of Light and Lighting
Impact of flexible / standing desks
on lighting design?
Innovative
Indirectly encourages daylight to
avoid overly ”cold” artificial
lighting – modelling is beneficial
No direct correlation, but strong
CIBSE / SLL guidance on daylight
integration (usually with daylight
factors – min, average, uniformity
ratio)
P#53 Lighting for visual acuity
Ambient lighting: Min 215lux
If <300lux: 300-500lux task lighting
P#54 Circadian lighting design
Light’s effect on non-visual photoreceptors,
measured by Equivalent Melanopic Lux
Modelling incl daylight: min 250EML 4hrs/day,
at 75% workstations, vertical pane, 1.2m height
OR Artificial lighting: EML equal to IES-ANSI
RP-1-12 lux vertical targets
O#62 Daylight modelling
Min 55% space to receive min 300lux daylight
for min 50% annual operating hours
Max 10% space to receive 1000lux direct
sunlight for 250hours per year
© Delos Living, LLC 2014
Conflicts with Environmental Sustainability?
© Delos Living, LLC 2014
Filtering may impact ventilation efficiency
… but the mandatory WELL requirements (MERV13/F7) broadly
align with CIBSE guidance and should often already be included
Reverse osmosis plant, if installed...
But except in the case of Nickel and Copper, this would address
levels of metals exceeding UK and/or WHO guidance
Lighting loads may increase to meet the required melanopic lux levels,
if little daylight and mostly “warm” lights
