  1. Hi everyone welcome to the first of our short webinars providing some overview on the support that IES and our partners can provide for the upcoming LCSF and PSDS schemes
  2. For anyone on the call who is unclear on the differences between the 2 schemes. LCSF is a fully funded grant that pays for all the consultancy work required to be able to apply for the PSDS scheme. The PSDS scheme is grant funded, but with an element of match funding, and this fund provides the capital funding to allow the client to go on and deliver the net zero initiatives (next) The Public Sector Low Carbon Skills Fund provides grants for public sector organisations to engage the specialist and expert advice and skills required to develop a heat decarbonisation plan. Having a robust heat decarbonisation plan will put organisations in a strong position to take the next steps in decarbonising, including by enabling them to develop detailed project proposals that will help them to apply for any future grant funding for capital decarbonisation measures such as the Public Sector Decarbonisation scheme. This means organisations can think more strategically and be better prepared for future decarbonisation opportunities.

  4. Using energy modelling is becoming the go to approach for net zero engineering studies. It is more robust. If Salix evaluate on quality rather than a fastest finger approach, then using energy modelling will give you an edge. IES have 30 years experience of energy and thermal modelling and our simulation engines are globally recognised as best in class. As well as strengthening your application energy modelling also ensures that heat pumps are sized more accurately, optimising capex investments and operating costs, derisking your investments. When it comes to PSDS you need to demonstrate clearly how each energy intervention has performed. Using energy modelling will help here too.
  5. When we spoke to public sector clients about these funding streams, the biggest challenge that they found was trying to complete applications for LCSF and PSDS in the same year. In 2023 LCSF was awarded between June and July. From award the client would need to run a procurement exercise and a consultant would be appointed August to September, leaving approximately 2 months to get all the work done. It was virtually impossible to do this. IES’s offering tries to mitigate this challenge by working with the client to help them through some levels of internal governance, with them able to procure quickly upon a successful LCSF award, via a fully compliant direct award framework.
  6. To kick things off we need the building info and an idea of project scope from the client. We then cost that up on the LCSF costing sheet and return to the client. The client then seeks first level governance approval. Once approved we have a call to finalise project scope, and then a formal quote is then produced and the LCSF costing sheet updated. The client seeks next level internal governance and also checks with his procurement support that our frameworks are acceptable. Assuming green lights on both, we then go on and complete the application for the client. The end result being that if the client is successful they can award the LCSF funding within a few weeks, without having to run a full procurement exercise, allowing more time to complete the work in time for PSDS opening. Worth noting here that the risk sits with IES, and the client has no obligations should they be unsuccessful in the LCSF application.

  9. We have entered into some strategic partnerships with a selection of existing product users, ranging for ESCO’s to MEP consultants. Each of our partners will also have a fully compliant procurement route. The aim of the partnership is to allow each public sector organisation the chance to meet both LCSF and PSDS in the same year.
  10. Phases 1 and 2 focus on the Decarbonisation Plan for all buildings in scope. We use our software tools, like iCD, to understand your entire building portfolio and which buildings should be a focus for further phases. Our Partners then start the next stage of the program by conducting Technical Surveys of buildings identified during the portfolio-level assessment. Next, that feeds into the Feasibility Study Phase, where we build the digital twin for the selected buildings and analyse relevant Energy Conservation Measures. We look at energy and carbon savings for each measure and its implementation suitability for the building. After the report with the simulation results ready, our Partners will conduct the investment-grade audit based on site survey reports and the feasibility study outcomes. We will discuss your budgets and Net Zero plans, which will inform the creation of a strategic plan, including cost plans and cashflows. After we complete the Heat Decarbonisation Plan, our partners progress to the Detail Design Phase for the most imminent selection of measures. Our solution puts you in a strong position to confidently apply for capital grant funding and later supports your portfolio in decarbonisation journey.
  11. We start off by creating a digital twin of all of the buildings, with our high level modelling tool, the iCD. We refine the digital models to a tolerance of circa 10%, with monthly energy data
  12. When we are satisfied with our baseline digital models we simulate different net zero interventions to understand what ones work best and in which order to best implement them
  13. We have all the information we need to create our strategic plan
  14. For the buildings that require detailed designs, we move from our iCD high level digital twin to a detailed digital twin, which we build in our virtual environment software. We calibrate this VE model down to hourly time-series feeds from the BMS, AMR or any other available sub-metering. Once calibrated we are able to model all types of heat calculations and net zero interventions to support the design work and investment grade proposals
  15. Outcomes include a strong funding application, a digital twin asset, enhanced M&V, net zero pathways, a detailed report, a central repository for the clients building portfolio, allowing project stakeholders to view the models up on the cloud for easier collaborating.
  16. At the heart of our modelling tools sits our simulation engine, the apache. The apache engine is recognised globally as best in class, it uses physics intelligence to calculate all the energy and thermal exchanges on the building when you simulate changes to it. By building a model and simulating the heating losses and loads we are able to support the detailed design work with accurate information to ensure that heat pumps are sized correctly, resulting in capex savings on heat pump installations and on ongoing operational costs. We calibrate our models with real building information for increased accuracy. Once we set up this live feed between the model and the building, it is also used in PSDS delivery to measure and verify the performance of each intervention. Using energy simulation with live feeds of time-series data from the building is the most accurate way to verify. You get ownership of the digital twin at the end of the process, which can be included in future net zero workstreams so that you keep that golden thread of information following the building on the road to zero carbon.
  17. The net zero pathway that is prepared for each building can also be updated along the building lifecycle. All of the buildings will also be available on our cloud information models, for you to fly through your projects with all the stakeholders
  18. A benefit of having your own digital asset is that it can be used along the buildings net zero journey to help you make informed decisions on how best to decarbonise. De-risking your capex. You will be able to use that asset to measure and verify the savings of each energy intervention, which is a requirement of PSDS. Using energy simulation with live feeds of time-series data from the building is the most accurate way to verify, and again, will strengthen your PSDS application too. The digital asset can be included in future net zero workstreams so that you keep that uniformity and that golden thread of information following the building on the road to zero carbon.
  19. Our digital Twins are essentially calibrated energy models.
  20. In addition to the usual support you might expect, each organisation will have their own digital asset. This in itself costs around 15 to 25k to build, depending on the size of the building. If the client does not have IES software then they will get a copy of the file with ownership transferred, allowing the client to give to the PSDS contractor for M&V. The file can also be part of any future project scopes on the buildings route to net zero. The client also receives a net zero dashboard for each building, and there is also the cloud viewer which helps the client set specific scenes and tell the story to his project stakeholders.
  21. Some info about IES. Over the last 29 years we have built a solid reputation with our Apache simulation engine, this engine uses physics principles to calculate every thermal and energy transaction in a building down to 2 minute time steps. Our software is used to create over 75,000 projects per year and over 1.5 million buildings modelled in our software, negating the need for 42 coal fired power stations
  22. I will give you a quick overview of our software products to start. The VE is our market leader, used by many of you on a daily basis for Energy & Thermal modelling for the design of energy efficient buildings, or for Part L, EPC’s, calculating Heating and cooling loads, HVAC optimisation, Lighting, Airflow, and there are plenty more outcomes from this suite of tools. It only does 1 building at a time, typically a non-domestic building like an office. These new tools were developed to widen the IES net zero offering across a wider range of buildings. The iCD tool uses the same Apache simulation engine as the VE, but the attributes are not as many, so we can build models and run simulations for net zero outcomes a lot quicker. Great for multiple buildings, be it on the same campus or scattered across a city or region. It is also a useful tool for a passive first approach on early stage masterplanning projects. The iSCAN is our cloud based analytics platform, it can be used on its own as a building performance tool, or to be used to calibrate the digital models from the VE or iCD software. iVN looks at simulation across power, water, heat and renewables networks. All the outputs can then be visualised across our collaboration cloud which are fully customisable information models, dashboards, and roadmaps. The tools provide many different outcomes but used together they have a unique USP of providing robust outputs at a granular level for the lifecycle of a portfolio of buildings and networks at city levels.
