differences in how the author and director utilize certain effects to obtain a dark tone. The screen
adaptation paid homage to the dark tone perceived in the novel through lighting and a voiceover
narration from Easy. Several scenes in the movie appear to have darker lighting than others.
This effect allows viewers to feel the mysterious and secretive mood that is intended. In the
scene where Easy visits John s nightclub the lighting in the movie portrays the room as very
dark and musty. The room itself is very enclosed and secretive since the owner, John, was into
the speakeasy business before Prohibition was repealed. The nightclub itself is for the black
community and has a very low key reputation. To show the secretive, mysterious reputation of the

In the film V for Vendetta directed by James McTeigue, the sequence I close read was the killing of
Sutler, Creedy, and V. This sequence was extremely intense and had me sitting on the edge of my
seat all throughout. Four techniques that were used in this sequence by McTeigue that made this so
consuming were camera angles, camera shots, camera movement and sound effects.
Firstly, let us take a look at the technique, camera angles. McTeigue uses camera angles to show
us who has the power and more dominance out of the two characters. When V says to Sutler, At
last, we finally meet the camera is positioned behind Sutler s silhouette on a low angle. Sutler is
on his knees, trapped by two of Creedy s men while V is standing up and has a lot of free space
around him. McTeigue using the low angle as the camera is focused on V speaking shows us that
V has the power and dominance over Sutler in this conversation. Another time this technique is
used is when Creedy is about to shoot Sutler. The camera is positioned at a low angle, Creedy is
looking down and pointing his gun down (to Sutler who is not in this frame). Not only does
Creedy have a gun pointing down at Sutler that already gives Creedy a lot of power but, for
McTeigue to use the low angle as well makes the shot more intense and it just completely strips
Sutler of any power he had left.
Secondly, an important technique McTeigue also uses in this sequence is camera shots.
Obviously, there was a lot of camera shots used but, I picked out a few that I thought were quite
important in this sequence. The first was an extreme close up (ECU) used by McTeigue when
the camera was focusing on Sutler s eyes just before Creedy was about to shoot him. The last
time we see Sutler before this shot is him chuckling to himself. So, when McTeigue uses an
extreme close up to show Sutler s eye widening in fear and realisation, it shows that Sutler had
just realised or taken into consideration that he was actually going to die. McTeigue also used an
extreme close up when V puts the Scarlet Carson in Sutler s pocket. V gives these roses to his
victims before they die. It is a symbol of freedom. So, V giving this to Sutler and McTeigue using

Attentiveness is a key value the team holds. Everyone needs to be there and ready to go by the
start of practice. If someone is late they get talked to by one of the coaches which is one of their
sanctions they practice. Being attentive is a good lesson swimmers learn that gets them ready
for having a job after college. At morning practice, it is kind of astonishing to see the swimmers
being unexpectedly energetic, especially at 5:40 AM. Before jumping into the pool, I noticed a
lot of the swimmers were doing some sort of dance. They were swinging their arms, jumping up
and down, stretching, etc. I think They are doing some dynamic warm ups they go through
before entering into the pool. They do this to get them loose and ready to swim. It almost as if it
is a ritual they do before every practice or before every event at a meet. It like how Michael
Phelps flops his arms around behind the blocks before racing. Swimmers are a unique subculture
as well. I feel as if they are pretty open minded and generally nice people. There are a few
characteristic that set swimmers apart from the normal culture. Most of them have big shoulders
which makes sense because they use them every day in the water. Sometimes one can tell a
swimmer from how their hair looks. Some have distinguishable fried hair that is shiny and messy.
Another thing to tell a swimmer is by the amount of food they eat. If anyone has seen a group of
swimmers at the cafeteria at their school, it is mostly likely one

must have previous knowledge to some extent before writing Games. In the first paragraph
Johnson is already showing he has done his research and writes about Dr. Spock and what he must
say about video games (196). Afterwards, Johnson introduces another source he has studied, this
time about reading, written by Andrew Solomon (197). Both studies Johnson introduces shows he
has researched both video games and reading. Later in his piece, Johnson writes, When I read
these ostensibly positive accounts of video games... (200). Johnson is showing the audience he is
analyzing video games for himself by reading about them and the actual content of the games.
Concluding his piece, he states that video games can be hard (Johnson 201). This statement
implies Johnson has played video games himself, otherwise he would be contradicting himself of
what he says in the context. He talks about the gap between people who have or have not played
them. People who have not played them cannot talk about them coherently (201). Therefore,
Johnson must have played video games and gained a personal experience that makes him qualified
to write about this
