Multi-Protocol Support
The IEFN's design allows multi-protocol routing,
bridging, and WAN connectivity.
For Routing: TCP/IP with OSPF and RIP, Novell IPX,
DECnet (phase IV), AppleTalk (phase 2), Xerox
XNS, Banyan VINES, and OSI with ES-IS and IS-IS.
For Bridging: Spanning Tree Transparent Bridge
and Transparent Synchronous Pass-Thru.
For WAN Connectivity: HDLC, PPP, X.25, Frame
Relay, and SMDS.
The module is IEEE 802.3 protocol and interface
compatible.
Intelligence
Built-in intelligence enables the module to
automatically learn the network configuration and
set up efficient routing schemes, greatly simplifying
and streamlining installation and operation
procedures.
Maximal Uptime
Maximal uptime is achieved through fault tolerance,
self-testing routines, and extensive diagnostics. The
module supports the IEEE 802.1d Spanning Tree
Algorithm and supplies backup data links for
continuous network operation. Extensive self-testing
routines are employed to detect potential problems.
Diagnostic LEDs indicate status of ports,
management, loads and faults.
Manageability
The IEFN is manageable by MultiMan, LANNET's
SNMP-based network management system, in
conjunction with Wellfleet's Site Manager. The
powerful management console allows module
configuration and router parameter control from the
system manager's desktop. Setup is also possible
through the serial RS-232 port on the module's front
panel. Software can be downloaded by TFTP from
the console station.
The router module's configurable parameters are
stored in on-board Flash Card allowing
independent plug-and-play operation.
A Path for Growth
Software download capability and advanced
hardware provide a platform for future integration of
advanced bridging and routing features.

DESCRIPTION
Introduction
The IEFN (Integrated Ethernet Feeder Node) is a
multi-port, multi-protocol bridge/router module for
use with the MultiNet modular smart hubs. The two
slot module, which provides concurrent routing and
bridging, is a powerful internetworking solution for
multiple LAN/WAN environments. It is totally
integrated, interfacing with the backplane segments
and manageable under the same network
management system.
Flexible Connectivity
The IEFN's interface is comprised of two Ethernet
ports that can individually connect to any two of the
four Ethernet internal segments on the backplane.
This unique port switching capability allows flexible
implementation of bridging and routing functions.
Two front panel synchronous ports provide
LAN/WAN connectivity.
Port selection can be via on board DIP switches or
from the management console.
Performance
The powerful multiprocessor module, incorporating
a state-of-the art Motorola 68030, 32Mhz CPU,
provides a high performance bridging/routing
capability. High network load filtering, high
forwarding rate and low transfer delay provide for
efficient internetworking.
