(1) Stem borers, gall midge, brown planthopper, white-backed planthopper, green leafhopper, leaf-folder, case worm, and gundhi bug are major pests of rice. (2) They damage rice by feeding on plant tissues inside or outside the stem or by sucking plant sap which can result in dead hearts, white ears, or hopper burn. (3) Management strategies include use of resistant varieties, field sanitation, balanced fertilization, and selective application of chemical and biological pesticides when economic thresholds are reached.
