INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY: FINAL PROJECT
INTRODUCTION TO FINAL PROJECT
Introduction to Construction Industry final project requires student to initiate a
small scale construction project. The scale of the empty land is between
900 meter sq (30m x 30m) – 1200 meter sq (30m x 40m). Student were to choose
a project proposal that serve a specific purpose. Student have to choose one out
of 6 purposes that are recreation area, commercial area, industrial area,
agricultural area, tourism area or residential area. In a group of two, students
have to work together to prepare a project proposal for the construction project.
INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY: FINAL PROJECT
UNDERSTANDING OF: COMMERCIAL AREA
What is a Commercial Area?
A commercial is used for commercial activities such as buying and selling goods
and services in retail businesses, wholesale, financialestablishments and wide
variety of services that are broadly classified as “business”. Commercialactivities
area extremely importantto a community’s economy even if it uses a small
amount of land as it provides jobs and income to the community.
Different kinds NeighborhoodCommercial area?
Neighborhood Commercial 1, this zone is planned for small sites or in dense
residential neighborhoods. This zoneencourages the provision of small-scale
retail and services for the nearby residents. Development is intended to be
pedestrian-oriented and compatible with the scale of the surrounding residential
areas.
Neighborhood Commercial, this zoneis planned for small commercial sites and
areas or a less dense residential neighborhoods. The importanceof the zoneis on
uses which will provideservices for the nearby residential areas and on other uses
which are small-scale and havelittle impact. Uses are limited in intensity to
promote their local orientation and to limit adverseimpacts on nearby residential
areas.
Examples of commercial areabuildings:
- Bank
- Call centre
- Chain store
- Grocery store
- Pharmacy
- Sports arena
INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY: FINAL PROJECT
Rationale of the Site and Proposal:
The main reason I chooseto proposea commercial area is becausethis site is
an empty land that is surrounded by residential area and primary school. Based
on my research, the nearestcommercial area fromthis residential area is about
1000 meter away. This empty land has the potential of a commercial area
because it is in walking distancefrom mostof the residents of Taman Gembira.
Benefit andNeeds of the ConstructionProject tothe Community:
This projectplans the usageof an empty space efficiently that will bring
benefits to the community. Efficient usageof and empty land. Convenient for
surrounding residents to buy grocery and also students to buy stationery and
books. Students can also go to the library. By constructing this commercial area,
more local business is create to improvesocial issues and also open a few jobs
and bring money into the ommunity.
INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY: FINAL PROJECT
UNDERSTANDING OF: RECREACTION AREA
Understanding onRecreationArea
Itis proposed to build a recreation open spaces area at the 30m× 30msite
which is located in Lorong Hilir 5, Taman Gembira, 41100, Klang. Recreation area
is an area used by public for recreation. Generally, recreation open spaces are the
outdoor open-air spacewhich is used principally for active or passiverecreation
purpose. Itis developed either by the public or private sector and is counted
towards the open spacestandard of provision.
Rationale of the Site and Proposal:
1. Site chosen
The reasons I choosethe site becausethe site is an empty space
surrounded with residential area and there is a primary schoolwhich is located
about 400 m fromthe site. Other than that, the site also got no green area, which
I seem it is not balancing the element between environmentand construction.
30m×30m site
INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY: FINAL PROJECT
2. Proposalof a recreation area
A recreation area is seemed to be important in that area. Itis becausein
that particular area, there is no green area. This will be a leisure services provided
for the community user. Recreation area provides vital green area in a fast-
developing residential area and also vegetative buffers to construction and
development. With the existing of recreation area, we don’t lose sightof the
greenery of the plants, it also reminds us of the importance greenery spaceto our
life. Recreation area is one of the ways to improvethe quality of life and make the
communities livable.
Benefits of RecreationArea
Based on Nationwide Study of the Perceptions of the American Public
research on "The Benefits of Local Recreation and Park Services”, the percentage
of individual and family benefits identified by users of local parks and recreation
services are:
Personal 42%
Social 38%
Facility/Activity 12%
Environmental 6%
Economic 2%
INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY: FINAL PROJECT
Benefits towards surrounding community
i. Social benefits
The recreation area will be the gathering space for the surrounding
community in Taman Gembira. As weknow, due to development and limit
leisure time, there are some neighbors that don’tknow each other
although their houses are adjacent.
Park and recreation area facilitate social interactions that are critical
to maintaining community cohesion and pride. Parks providea meeting
place where community members can develop socialties among them.
People gather to shareexperiences, socialize and to build community
bonds in common green spaces.
These public commons are the glue that holds the community
together and maintaining and improving future positive socialinteractions.
Besides, the interaction between adults and kids also can be enhanced.
ii. Environmental benefits
In order to balance between elements in natural environmentand
fast-developing construction, the existence of recreation area is seems
much suitable in this condition. Parks, greenway and open spaces are
critical components to protecting and preserving our naturalenvironment.
The presence of plants can improvethe quality of air and at the same
time provides fresh air which is beneficial for students nearby and
surrounding community user. Plants absorb carbon dioxideand polluted air
that is produced by transportation, construction and release oxygen, thus
reducing the concentration of carbon dioxide and polluted air around the
area. Recreation area keeps the living environment healthy.
iii. Physicalbenefits
Recreation area would providespaces for community user to do their
physicalactivity. Physicalactivity is an essential part of an individual’s
efforts to stay healthy, fight obesity and prevent chronic conditions that
lead to coronary disease, high blood pressure, kidney failureand diabetes.
Having a convenience access to recreation area is one of the most
important factors that determine whether people will become active or
stay in unproductiveway.
INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY: FINAL PROJECT
iv. Psychologicalbenefits
Leisure activities in park and recreation area can improvemoods,
reduce stress and enhance a senseof wellness. In an increasingly complex
world, morepeople are placing high value on achieving the feelings of
relaxation and peacefulness that contact with nature, recreation and
natural open spaces. People go to the park and recreation area to get in a
better mood, to reinvigorate themselves and to decrease the anxieties of
daily life.
This recreation area is suitable for students and community users
who want to handle their stress in a very gentle way.
Impact of RecreationArea
Every construction musthave its bad consequent. Although construction of
recreation area has many benefits, it also has its own impact. The impact is the
cost of constructing a recreation park is expensive.

  • 6. INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY: FINAL PROJECT UNDERSTANDING OF: RECREACTION AREA Understanding onRecreationArea Itis proposed to build a recreation open spaces area at the 30m× 30msite which is located in Lorong Hilir 5, Taman Gembira, 41100, Klang. Recreation area is an area used by public for recreation. Generally, recreation open spaces are the outdoor open-air spacewhich is used principally for active or passiverecreation purpose. Itis developed either by the public or private sector and is counted towards the open spacestandard of provision. Rationale of the Site and Proposal: 1. Site chosen The reasons I choosethe site becausethe site is an empty space surrounded with residential area and there is a primary schoolwhich is located about 400 m fromthe site. Other than that, the site also got no green area, which I seem it is not balancing the element between environmentand construction. 30m×30m site
  • 7. INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY: FINAL PROJECT 2. Proposalof a recreation area A recreation area is seemed to be important in that area. Itis becausein that particular area, there is no green area. This will be a leisure services provided for the community user. Recreation area provides vital green area in a fast- developing residential area and also vegetative buffers to construction and development. With the existing of recreation area, we don’t lose sightof the greenery of the plants, it also reminds us of the importance greenery spaceto our life. Recreation area is one of the ways to improvethe quality of life and make the communities livable. Benefits of RecreationArea Based on Nationwide Study of the Perceptions of the American Public research on "The Benefits of Local Recreation and Park Services”, the percentage of individual and family benefits identified by users of local parks and recreation services are: Personal 42% Social 38% Facility/Activity 12% Environmental 6% Economic 2%
  • 8. INTRODUCTION TO CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY: FINAL PROJECT Benefits towards surrounding community i. Social benefits The recreation area will be the gathering space for the surrounding community in Taman Gembira. As weknow, due to development and limit leisure time, there are some neighbors that don’tknow each other although their houses are adjacent. Park and recreation area facilitate social interactions that are critical to maintaining community cohesion and pride. Parks providea meeting place where community members can develop socialties among them. People gather to shareexperiences, socialize and to build community bonds in common green spaces. These public commons are the glue that holds the community together and maintaining and improving future positive socialinteractions. Besides, the interaction between adults and kids also can be enhanced. ii. Environmental benefits In order to balance between elements in natural environmentand fast-developing construction, the existence of recreation area is seems much suitable in this condition. Parks, greenway and open spaces are critical components to protecting and preserving our naturalenvironment. The presence of plants can improvethe quality of air and at the same time provides fresh air which is beneficial for students nearby and surrounding community user. Plants absorb carbon dioxideand polluted air that is produced by transportation, construction and release oxygen, thus reducing the concentration of carbon dioxide and polluted air around the area. Recreation area keeps the living environment healthy. iii. Physicalbenefits Recreation area would providespaces for community user to do their physicalactivity. Physicalactivity is an essential part of an individual’s efforts to stay healthy, fight obesity and prevent chronic conditions that lead to coronary disease, high blood pressure, kidney failureand diabetes. Having a convenience access to recreation area is one of the most important factors that determine whether people will become active or stay in unproductiveway.
