Introduction:
As for this assignment, we were to find a piece of empty land of
size around 50x50m to 50x75m somewhere outside from Taylor’s
University and use the piece of land for a small construction
projectwith a report proposal.
The size of the empty land chosen should not be smaller than
50x50m or bigger than 50x75m.As for the projectbrief assigned to
us, we were required to accompanied the task mentioned which
include recreation, commercial,industrial, agricultural and
residential area.
The main purpose of this projectis to allow us to gain knowledge
and understanding of the construction team, its organization and
responsibilities that they would obtain employment, career
progress and to further investigate the land conservation.
This project would also help us to have a greater understanding of
the construction processesof the construction team roles and
responsibilities and value their professionin the construction
industry.
Objective:
Provide an infrastructure that will give benefits to the residents
which is staying around that area. A building which have several
shops. This is to ensure that residents could avoid going far away
just to buy some goods or provide services. Its benefit will also
save costand energy of the residents. To also include green
space of landscape surrounding the infrastructure to provide shade
and cover the sunlight during the day. This will eventually cool
down the environment and reduce the heat expose throughout the
area.

Introduction to our site:
55m
35m
The plot of the empty land we have found is an undeveloped piece
of land covered with grass. Therefore,we have planned to use this
land since it’s located near the housing area. This land is located
beside the commercialbuildings and is facing the roadside where
opposite is the housing area. Its location is perfectbecause it can
be considered as in between of a service area.
There are other good reasons why we chose this land, but the
main reason is because it’s a good location to build anything we
wanted. With the residential located surrounding it and commercial
building next to it, it can be called as a ‘pass by’ place when we
come out to the highway. Indeed, its land can be at a high range of
value cause of its location and facilities around it.
This provides us with lots of opportunities for more developmentto
this land. Thus, we wish to transform this land into something more
incredible and to benefits the residents staying there.

Site Analysis and Observation:
It’s the low-cost terrace residential area located opposite and the
commercialbuildings just right beside it. As for the traffic, there will
be a slightly congestionon the roadway when passing by the land.
Since it is located nearby the industrial area, there will be heavy
noises and interference on the surrounding. Smokes will also flows
on several areas including the land expose to it.
Traffic:
Road beside the site:
From the highway:
10
Topography:
The landform of the site is facing downwards from the right to the
left.
11
Microclimate:
The sun movement, the sunrise from the left side in the morning
while moving to the right side of the land as the sun set in the
evening. As for the wind movement, the wind moves in an opposite
direction, from the south of the land blowing towards the north
side.
12
Views of angles:
The good views are directly facing the roadside, which are the
main entrance to the land. Another good view is the land facing the
commercialarea where shops are located next to it. It’s beneficial
when the land is used up to easily access the commercialbuilding
just by walking at a short distance. The bad view of the land is that
it is facing another piece of land where it is filled up with trees
which looks like a small forestbesides it.
13
Facilities surrounding:
The land is basically located in the middle,as there is roadway
surrounding several areas. From the highway, there will be two
areas that is commercialarea on the left side and the right side is
another piece of land covered with trees. Our site is just located
beside the commercialarea on the right and on the left side is
residential area located opposite the road.
14
Advantage:
Our site is easily accessible from the highway and connection of
roadway surrounding it. The land can be considered the best spot
and location because it has many facilities surrounding the land
and is located at a nearby distance. Since the opposite of the site
is the residential area, the nearby residents can easily access the
land. Besidesthat, the commercialbuildings located next to the
side also give benefits. The land of our site is an open space,
which is an advantage and perfectspotfor future development.
Disadvantage:
Although our site had a perfectlocation, nothing actually comes
perfect, our site is located near to the industrial area, including
factories and developing areas, there will be a disturbance of
noises on several area affected by it. Smokes will also blow
towards our site due to the wind direction. There are also no
shading, no shelter and is directly facing under the sun in the
afternoon. Thus, heat keep surrounded the land and causes an
uncomfortable environment. Lack of green space was orientated
on the land to absorb the heat only allows heat to flow through the
entire land.
Proposal 1
(Name: Loh Wen Jun)
Project Benefits:
Needless of having our imagination goes wider to the community
around is the biggestgoal we could achieve. Looking at the smile
of satisfied residents knowing that, this infrastructure today will be
our goods and supplements. Not only benefits that we could
achieve by that, for example when we know that residents make a
great efforttraveling so far away, even out from their home to
effortlesslybuy some supplement and goods.Besides that, since
15
commercialareas are still under development, lack of community
and orientation is provided to allow residents to have a greater
benefitand to relieve all their efforts to travelsuch a distance.
When we decided to build a mall that could help and give benefits
to the residents, today will be our greatest achievement to make
them feelproud and satisfied with it. First of all the infrastructure
that we are going to build is a mall. A mall divided into several
areas; shops, wet market, food court and mini supermarket.
Outside of the commercial mall, there will be some shadingand
green spaceto cool down the environment when the sun
shines. There will also be benches and fountain placed outside of
the kiosk to allows residents to enjoy their time and relax.
Several shops such as clothing, stationery and saloon are
provided to allow residents to buy goods from a nearer distance. A
shorter distance could save lots of time and reduce the costof the
fuel consumptionwhen they have to drive out to a longer and
further distance.
Commercial Area
For the proposal,we have looked through the entire area
surrounding the land and what might still be lacking. We finally
concluded that residents staying around there are still having
trouble of a place that they could buy goods and supplements for
their daily needs such as rice, bread and egg to cookat home.
There are also lacked of varieties of shops such as stationary to
buy drawing tools, market to buy fishes, meat and vegetables as
well as food court which various type of food are provided to the
residents to eat. While outside the commercialmall will be the
place for green space where shades are provided to cover the
sunlight to cool down the environment.
Throughout the analysis, we have being looking for a solution and
developedideas in order to build our proposal. An idea that is
suitable and can fit through the empty land due to its size and
option. This might be the greatestsolution to solve the issues
faced by the residents everyday and propose a new development
of commercialforthe clients for our project.
16
Lack of commercialplace-The commercialarea is the only place
where residents can buy goods and supplements.
Lack of green spaces-Throughoutthe whole area, the green
spaces surrounding the area is very less. This causes less shades
and covered area to prevent the exposure of the hot sunlight.
Travelfurther distance-Sinceno commercialarea are
contributed, residents staying nearby had to travel a further
distance to buy goods and supplements.
Perfectplace to build a mall-The location of the land is good
enough to build a commercialmall.
Project Concept:
1) Green Space
The conceptof green space focusedon the natural environment
on the surrounding. Places where people are presentto and
17
consistof the natural elements such as trees and grass. A place
that consists of shades and covered from sunlight. Its shaded are
a cooling place for relaxation. Green landscaping is provided
outside of the commercial mall to cool down the microclimate and
the environment during the sunrise. With shady trees and greener
grass, residents will be able to relax and spend their time looking
at the green environment to overcome their busy and stressfulday.
2) Varieties of Spaces
We have been developing ideas and figured out what facilities to
placed in the mall by dividing the space in it. For the commercial
mall, we had actually divided and arranged the spaces for different
shops and kiosks.
‘The Garden Mall’
The garden mall is the name for our commercial mall. The garden
mall is an only 1 story commercialmall due to insufficientspace
provided from the land.

Concept to applied in this project:
Shop
Shops are the main resources of the Garden Mall. It is the
place consists of several structures that sell varieties of
expenses such as books, clothing and sportswear. It is
beneficial that residents now do not need to travel at such
distance. The shop also sells expenses to a reasonable
price and good quality.
23
PLAN VIEW OF SHOP
24
Kiosk
The kiosk is located surrounding the Garden Mall. Each
kiosk sells varieties of different expenses mainly for
residents. Its space is also reasonable just to sell simple
and small expenses. Residents can easily buy their
expenses from here.
25
Wet Market
The wet market is located in the middle of the Garden
Mall. The wet market sells mainly fruit, vegetable and
several foods for cooking usage. Its main purpose is to
allow residents to buy fruits and vegetable as their daily
expenses to bring home. The wet market also sells at the
lowest rate compared to the outside.
26
PLAN VIEW OF THE WET MARKET
27
Food Court
The food court is located in the Garden Mall as a
place for residents to eat. Its food is variety and consists
of different types of cuisine that are suitable for various
types of people and different races. The price of the food
is also considered a lower rate and reasonable compare
to outside.
28
PLAN VIEW OF FOOD COURT
29
Mini Supermarket
The Garden Mall also consists of a mini supermarket. The
mini supermarket offers a variety of food and household
products to allow residents to buy some goods. It also
benefits the residents to avoid traveling a further distance
just to buy some goods. Now that there is a supermarket
located nearby the residential area, residents can come
here instead of traveling a far distance.
30

PLAN VIEW OF SUPERMARKET
31
Landscape
Hardscape
The set of table and chair is located outside behind the
Garden Mall. It is placed beside the landscape for
residents to enjoy the cool environment outside.
32
Softscape
Softscape are placed on the landscape surrounding the
Garden Mall to provide a greener environment and green
space. The trees will actually cool down the environment
and reduce the heat produced through the sun in the
afternoon. It will absorb the harmful gas such as carbon
dioxide and releases more oxygen gas to the atmosphere.
This will eventually cause a cooler environment. The trees
also provide shades that could cover up the sunlight. More
trees are placed on the landscape to beautify the area.
33
Materials Used In Constructing
Non-corrosive material will be used in heavily moisture
area such as drains, toilet, celling and wall cover. Material
that is waterproof and cannot be absorbed by water will be
used in construction. Highly resistant material that cannot
absorb water will be easy to clean.
Flooring
Ceramic tiles-Supermarket, shops, toilets
Ceramic tiles are waterproof and are long lasting life
cycle. It is also cheaper than other material. This will
reduces the cost consumption during construction.
Concrete tiles-Restaurant, wet market
Concrete tiles are sustainable and economical. Its
material is at lower cost and reasonable price. Concrete
material can last for a longer period of time when it is
polished every time.
34
Profession Involves In Proposal
Architect
An architect is hired by the client to produce detailed
design that the client wants to make into reality. Architect
needs to comply with building concepts and safety
regulation that are safes to the people. They also need to
do local planning and restriction. Depending on the type of
project, there might be law preservation surrounding the
local environment. Regular client meeting are important to
establish requirement and discuss detail design proposal.
Then heading up to the project team and professional who
will start working on this stage of the project which include
engineers, designers and financials.
During the documentation process, the responsibilities are
to design detailed drawing and use modern technology
such as CAD to test the possibility of the design. Architect
needs to consider of the clients requirements, budgets
and regulations. Once the documentation process is
completed, there is the next documentation need to be
produced.
These are the construction documentation, which translate
the design into steps and technical specification for
contractors and construction professionals to refer. Once
the project reaches the construction stage, the architect
need to be involved in regular site visit and meeting.
Overseeing the construction and signing off on various
pieces of work, negotiating with contractors and resolving
any problems that may occurs.
35
Quantity Surveyor
A quantity surveyor is hired by the client to calculate the
cost needed for this project. Quantity surveyor is the
person responsible for figure it out what a construction
project is going to cost. They also have to make sure that
the construction costs and production are managed as
efficiently as possible.
Before the project, the quantity surveyor has to calculate a
budget based on the client requirements. They prepared
detailed estimated to ensure that the budget is sufficient
for each construction phase. Before the construction
starts, quantity surveyor can help with a feasibility studies
for the project. They can roughly estimate what’s involved
in this project based on the measurement of the designers
or client’s sketch. The quantity surveyor studies the
architects and engineers plan, identify the cost involved
and then set an overall estimated budget for this project.
During the construction process, the quantity surveyor can
provide cash flow data so the client can arrange the
finances needed for each stages of the project. The
quantity surveyor can also assess cost effects when
change of project occurs, such as delay and agree on
variation with contractors. They can provide a bank with a
project report and help the client by preparing draw down
certificates for money to be loaned by the bank.
When the construction is over, the quantity surveyor adds
up the total cost. They can prepare a statement of final
account, which records the actual cost of all sections of
the job.

Rationality
The project that we propose is actually to provide the
residents what they needed. We also investigated what is
needed to build on the empty land to benefit the residents
and improve the current condition. To solve problems
faced by the residents in their daily life and what issues
they always faced. We were to create a project that could
enhance the quality of the surrounding area by building a
commercial mall that sells goods and supplements so that
residents staying nearby could buy things easier rather
than traveling at further distance.
Conclusion
At the end of this project, we have concluded that it is very
important to develop an understanding various working
relations and how effectively they communicate among
each other. We had also learned how to document our
observation and understanding from the research that we
did as to communicate our finding and place them in a
report in a convincing manner. We are also able to justify
the feasibility of a development and improve our proposal
to serve the purpose under its development. To enhanced
our proposal, we had done various sketching and develop
ideas that could eventually make our proposal into true
reality.

Lack of commercialplace-Thecommercialarea is the only place where residents can buy goods and supplements. Lack of green spaces-Throughoutthe whole area, the green spaces surrounding the area is very less. This causes less shades and covered area to prevent the exposure of the hot sunlight. Travelfurther distance-Sinceno commercialarea are contributed, residents staying nearby had to travel a further distance to buy goods and supplements. Perfectplace to build a mall-The location of the land is good enough to build a commercialmall. Project Concept: 1) Green Space The conceptof green space focusedon the natural environment on the surrounding. Places where people are presentto and 17

consistof the naturalelements such as trees and grass. A place that consists of shades and covered from sunlight. Its shaded are a cooling place for relaxation. Green landscaping is provided outside of the commercial mall to cool down the microclimate and the environment during the sunrise. With shady trees and greener grass, residents will be able to relax and spend their time looking at the green environment to overcome their busy and stressfulday. 2) Varieties of Spaces We have been developing ideas and figured out what facilities to placed in the mall by dividing the space in it. For the commercial mall, we had actually divided and arranged the spaces for different shops and kiosks. ‘The Garden Mall’ The garden mall is the name for our commercial mall. The garden mall is an only 1 story commercialmall due to insufficientspace provided from the land. 18

Rationality The project thatwe propose is actually to provide the residents what they needed. We also investigated what is needed to build on the empty land to benefit the residents and improve the current condition. To solve problems faced by the residents in their daily life and what issues they always faced. We were to create a project that could enhance the quality of the surrounding area by building a commercial mall that sells goods and supplements so that residents staying nearby could buy things easier rather than traveling at further distance. Conclusion At the end of this project, we have concluded that it is very important to develop an understanding various working relations and how effectively they communicate among each other. We had also learned how to document our observation and understanding from the research that we did as to communicate our finding and place them in a report in a convincing manner. We are also able to justify the feasibility of a development and improve our proposal to serve the purpose under its development. To enhanced our proposal, we had done various sketching and develop ideas that could eventually make our proposal into true reality. 38
