Georgian medicine has a long history dating back to pre-historical times. Several important early Georgian states like Diaokhi/Diaochi and Kolkhi/Colchis practiced medicine as early as the 14th-7th centuries BC. Many ancient Georgian medical manuscripts have been preserved, the earliest dating to the 10th century. Georgian physicians were renowned and studied in Russian and European schools. Georgian medicine combined herbal remedies, wound treatment, and care for patients.

medical manuscripts in Georgian and foreign libraries.

• Dozens of brilliant Georgian physicians received their education in Russian
and European medical schools. In Tbilisi, the Caucasian Medical Society was
founded, which had a worldwide response and whose honorary members
included Virkhov, Pirogov, Pasteur, Hirstli and Mechnikov.
