For their final project, second semester Northern Virginia Community College Composition students (ENG 112) work in groups to create presentations that introduce, analyze, and draw a conclusion about a significant American cultural artifact, (a trend, a celebrity, or anything that significantly impacts American culture). Students work together to build a persuasive argument using a combination of text, multimedia, and visual design. Students develop a claim about the negative or positive impact of the artifact on the demographic of American culture it affects. Alternatively, students may discuss what the artifact says about our culture.
These students are asked to explore a cultural artifact and determine its significance and/or role in our society. Students are encouraged to present their findings using any media they wish to implement.

1.
2. Background
0 Apple was established in 1976 by two high school friends, Steven
Jobs and Steven Wozniak .
0 March of 1981, Steven Jobs became chairman of Apple computer.
0 April 1, 1976, Apple Computer was born.
0 First IPod was made in 2001.
0 Then came the IPhone.
3. The First IPhone
0 In January of 2007 the first IPhone was
announced to be released in June.
0 When released it was only for AT&T users and
it was missing the iMessage feature.
0 In September 2007, Apple discontinued the 4
GB model, then released the IPhone 3G.
0 “The company said it sold 270,000 of its new
cellphones in the last two days of the quarter
and said it is on track to sell 1 million by the
end of September.”
4. The Evolution
0 For better or for worse, the IPhone has become a driving force
in American culture, changing the way we think about
communication and health.
6. Cultural Impact
0 As iOS's ability to interact with the real world increases, it
will be able to feed data collected from the environment
around us directly into Apple's digital brain. And its output,
rather than coming out of a speaker, could control smart
appliances all over your house (Tabini).
0 “The results from our study suggest that iPhones are
capable of becoming an extension of our selves such that
when separated, we experience a lessening of ‘self’ and a
negative physiological state,” Russell Clayton, the study’s
lead author, said in the statement (Linshi).
0 “But the Thought for the Day man was right -- I had given
myself entirely to it without question, like asking a lover to
move in without checking if they were willing to pay their
half of the rent first” (Reeves).
7. Where iPhones Factor: Social
Media Apps
0 Direct link to “global village.”
0 Instantly stream life from anywhere, anytime.
0 Instant Message (IM) friends, family, new
people, regardless of time and distance.
0 Evolving forms of communication unique to
iPhones and derivatives.
8. IPhone and Communication
0 Combines communicative properties of
mobile phone and computer.
0 First of its kind, followed by other
smartphones like Android.
0 Constantly evolving (i.e. addition of Facetime
in 2010)
9. The New Element: Computers
0 Phones make communication easier, computer
increases scope.
0 Interactive websites – Web 2.0
0 Rise of the “global village.”
0 “Village” centered around internet, not proximity.
0 Websites like Facebook lead to personal
communities.
10. Apps
0 40% of mobile apps being developed today are related to healthcare or
general health and wellness topics.
11. Healthcare
0 Department of Health And Human Services has begun to single-out the use
mobile devices as part of the meaningful use requirements for electronic
health records (EHR) systems.
0 Doctors will use digital systems to order lab work and diagnostic imaging
for at least 30% of their patients.
12. Healthcare systems
With Iphone apps
Measure things
Heart rate, blood
pressure, weight,….
Keep medical
information
Sending to
information to
doctors for medical
advice
Pre-exist conditions
Having insurance
under Obama care is
not problem
anymore
Without Iphone apps
Medical system will
be in the same place
14. Health
0 Earlier this year Kaiser Permanente leapfrogged the industry when it made its
entire electronic health care system – the most extensive electronic medical
record offering in the world – available to its 9 million members via an Android
app. The country’s largest medical organization quickly announced that the app
had garnered more than 95,000 downloads. Kaiser patients now make
appointments, check lab tests, order medicines, and communicate with their
physicians from the palm of their hands.
15. Conclusion
0 Since the invention of the first telephone by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876, the
iPhone is a huge breakthrough and has changed the lives of everyone culturally,
socially, and physically (health-wise). Ultimately becoming the driving force in
American culture as it allowed for:
0 Advancement in technology usage as the iPhone is capable of performing
various tasks such as home automation.
0 Empowering education for children and students everywhere.
0 Changing the way we view communication.
0 Contributing to the healthcare field through its aid for medical doctors.
