3. Smartphone History
– Up until 2006, no smartphone had been created yet. However, Apple decided to
change this and in 2007, they released the iPhone
– Android came in second with the creation of the G1 two years later in 2009
– By 2009, Apple had already released the iPhone 3Gs model
– Both phone companies revolutionized the world and within a matter of months,
had sold over one million of their devices
4. Negative Opinions
– People who argue that smartphones have a negative impact on teenagers, say this because
they believe that teenagers have become addicted to smartphones and that their social skills
have also been dramatically affected
– According to Hyunna Kim, addiction to smartphones “provokes physical symptoms such as dry
eves, carpal tunnel syndrome, repetitive motion injuries, wrists, neck, back and shoulders,
migraine headaches and numbness and pain in the thumb and the index and middle fingers.”
– Hyunna also mentions a research in which it was found that internet addictions cause
symptoms such as social isolation, family discord, divorce, academic failure, job loss, and debt.
– Jessica Hamilton, a high school teacher says that she thinks the use of smartphones has
affected students negatively on their ability to “elaborate and provide sufficient detail”
5. Positive Opinions
– While some people may focus on the negative side of smartphone usage among
teenagers, others like Martin White the managing director at Intranet Focus Ltd,
think that it has a positive effect because we have access to a lot of information
easily
– Through out his article, White talks about the benefits that come with having
information at our reach at any time.
– Although he sees it from more of a business perspective, he also mentions how
ebooks are more accessible for students because we can easily grab our phone and
read from there rather than carry a tick book
– In today’s society, mostly everyone owns a smartphone and surprisingly, there is a
lack of positive opinions when it comes to the effect they have on adolescents
6. Indecisive Opinions
– Now, we have the people who are for and against smartphones usage among teenagers but
we also have those who don’t find themselves siding with either one for several reasons.
– One of the reasons why some people aren’t capable of choosing a side is because they see
how smartphones have benefitted them but they also see how they has affected them
– One of the reasons why people see the positive effect is because students can access
information for school projects and get really creative on them as well. Another way in which
smartphones have a positive effect is that we get to download books and save them rather
than carry them around.
– Mood swings and other health defects are reasons why some people find smartphone effects
negative
– One of the most negative effects that smartphones have on teenagers is the distraction they
cause and that because of that distraction, academic failure may result but most importantly,
fatal accidents may also occur if one is driving or simply walking down the street.
