Competency Mapping
Definition
According to UNIDO(2002):
“A competency is a set of skills,
related knowledge and
attributes that allow an
individual to successfully
perform a task or an activity
within a specific function or a
job”.
Description
Competency mapping is a process of
identifying key competencies for an
organization and/or a job and
incorporating those competencies
throughout the various processes
(i.e. job evaluation, training,
recruitment ) of the organization. In
other words, competency mapping is
a method of examining the
weaknesses and strengths of an
employee or organization.
Shikha Kasera _ D042
from the perspective of the employer , competency mapping increases your
awareness of existing skill sets as wells as skill gaps in the organization. This helps you
make informed decisions when it comes to:
# defining the scope of work for existing roles and new job openings
# aligning the learning of your existing employees with your required skills
# recruiting people with the right skill sets

Disadvantages of Competency Mapping
 It can be out of a date at times because of its inevitable change of
pace in the organization.
 Sometimes, it’s of less use if the organizations don’t respond properly.
 No room for an individual to work in a field that would best make use
of one’s own competencies.
 Can be difficult for employees to transform, few can be good at
theory and few can be good at practices. If there is a change in the
work of the competencies, the work can be less productive.
Conclusion
 Competency mapping is useful not only from the individual but also from
organisations point of view as it defines the competencies required for the
position.
 Required to perform each role effectively.
 Serves as a base for all HR application.
 It can be undertaken through psychological testing.
 However it is an area which is least explored in India and thus many Indian
companies are unaware of this trend.
 It should not be seen as a rewards.
 It should be seen by stakeholders as an opportunity for long term growth.
