Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.
Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

I would like to start by sharing with some of HP Networking’s innovations that have transformed the industry. This also gives you a context for where today’s news fits into a well-planned strategy which we are executing. Click #1: Dating back to 2003, HP Networking drove many innovations that redefined campus economics by increasing the simplicity at the edge and removing operational costs with our lifetime warranty. Click #2: HP delivered the industry’s first virtualized server edge connectivity with Virtual Connect in 2007 Click #3: In 2009, we introduced the Intelligent Resilient Framework, the industry’s first switch virtualization and fabric technology. Click #4: In the very same year, we introduced the industry’s first single pane-of-glass management application with multivendor support, eliminating swivel-chair management. [twist at your hips from side to side when you say that ]Click #5: Last year, we introduced the industry’s only unified architecture which spans from the data center where applications run to the users in the campus and branch where applications are consumed [extend your right and then you left arm to indicate the breadth of the unified architecture ]Click #6: In February, we announced the industry’s first commercially available OpenFlow software – a key technology in Software Defined Networks – across 16 switch product lines. Click #7: And just a few weeks ago, we announced the industry’s first cloud network technology that enables the deployment of cloud applications in minutes rather than months with Virtual Application Networks.
HP evaluated and tested all of the products in the 3Com portfolio prior to the acquisition.Based on the test results, HP purchased 3Com and migrated to an all HP-network.HP’s 6 next generation data centers converted to HP Networking in under 6 months with no down time and 4 times the previous bandwidth.
Our close partnering with Microsoft is a key enabler for HP Networking’s integration with other HP business units. HP and Microsoft’s UC&C portfolio showcases the power of convergence through our complete end-to-end solutions, including:HP Services for design, integration and support of UC&C. HP infrastructure and devices, including BTO software tools for UC&C system and application management, end user clients like UC qualified notebooks, industry standard servers and HP networking switches and routers. And HP Networking is on a roll!Did you know that our recent quarterly earnings showed that HP Networking grew 15% year over year and that HP Networking has delivered seven consecutive quarters of double-digit revenue growth? It’s unmistakable and exciting – HP is transforming the networking industry.
HP unveiled the FlexNetwork architecture in May, 2011.The FlexNetwork architecture enables enterprises to fully harness the power of media-rich content, virtualization, mobility and cloud computing. It’s a unified network architecture that spans across the data center, campus and branch. It’s open and uses industry standards to support full network integration. It scales on the dimensions of functionality, connectivity & capacity. It uses award-winning vulnerability solutions & research through HP VDLabs. It’s agile for increasingly virtualized applications, rich media & for public and private clouds.Reduces complexity with single pane-of-glass management for physical & virtual environments.
HP Networking now has an incredibly broad networking and security portfolio all the way from the edge of the network to the very core of the data center. HP also provides single-pane-of-glass management and a broad range of services for our networking customers.Last year we acquired 3COM, and truly rounded out our portfolio with the newest and most innovative networking technology in the industry. We have a robust and highly competitive networking technology with industry leading innovations. This year, we’ve introduced many new products to our family. Let me show you what some of these products look like and what we really mean by true innovation.
The HP 12500 Switch series comprises a pair of powerful, next-generation routing switches with outstanding performance for the network core or the data center. The software has been enhanced to improve resiliency and performance.IRF has been added to the switch, which allows four of them to be combined into a single logical switch, regardless of their physically locations. The 12500 also supports IPv6 in this new software release. These enhancements are now available at no additional costs to existing 12500 users.~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~HP IRF technology eliminates aggregation layerThe aggregation capabilities of IRF allows the creation of a larger domain where edge switches or blade servers can be directly connected to the core – eliminating the aggregation layerScalability with up to 4-chassis virtualized coreToday we support a 2-chassis virtualized core and we are announcing scalability to a 4-chassis virtualized core. This means that we can double the number of edge switches or servers that are part of the same virtualized domainSub 50 millisecond resiliency Typically in a traditional Spanning Tree (RSTP) environment, failover is 1- 3 seconds. With IRF we are able to guarantee 50 millisecond failover/reconvergence100% greater network bandwidth: The aggregated bandwidth in going from a 2-chassis to 4-chassis configuration is doubled500X faster reconvergence: Comparing 50 milliseconds failover/reconvergence to either 1 second (200X) or 3 seconds (600X) with Spanning Tree – we are ~500X faster80% better vMotion: Comparing HP with IRF and competitive products with Spanning Tree, we show 80% better throughput for vMotion
HP Networking has developed a number of tools to simplify network integration for clients. The FlexFabric Reference Architecture is a reference design that is tested and validated by HP, with all the IP from one supplier and wrapped with one set of services. In addition to the Reference Architecture, Networktest, which is an independent company, conducted an HP/Cisco protocol interoperability test and published the results in a report called The HP/Cisco Switching and Routing Interoperability Test Results. Networktest also created the HP/Cisco Switching and Routing Interoperability Cookbook which lists all of the configuration commands needed to set up a duel vendor environment.I’d be glad to send you copies of both documents, if you are interested.

The 10500 comes in threeconfigurations – 10504, 10508 and the 10508v.It supports L2 and L3 functionality for advanced applications like voice, video and data.It also includes granular controls for policies for voice, data and mobility.
HP’s 5400/8200 modular switch family has been a flagship product family for campus LAN switching. HP recently refreshed the modules for this line. The new modules use the ProVision ASICs and improved energy efficiency. The family now includes 10 Gigabit-per-second uplink moduleover unshielded twisted-pair (copper) cabling, which dramatically reduces the cost of backbones between switches.
The new HP 3800 Switch Series is a family of fully managed Gigabit Ethernet Switches. There are a total of nine models in the 3800 line:24-port24-port PoE+24-port SFP switch with two SFP+ uplinks48-port48-port PoE+ with either SFP+ or 10GBASET uplinksThe switches use HP’s ProVision ASIC. The 3800 line also energy efficient and supports the IEEE Energy Efficient Ethernet standard. The 3800 switches are available now and list for $4,969.~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~Meshed Stacking has 4 stacking ports vs traditional ring stacking with only 2 ports. This allows for “meshed topologies” where every switch is directly connected to every other switch (up to 5 switches). The mesh topology reduces latency and hops thereby improving performance. In the case of a switch failure there is zero performance impact on the remaining devices in the network – and in the case of a link failure traffic will only need one additional hop to reach its destination versus a traditional ring which becomes a chain in the case of a link failure and therefore has significantly reduced performance. PoE+ and 8 queues per port enables convergence The 3800 series includes models with IEEE 802.3at PoE+ support. It can deliver up to 30 watts of PoE power per port to devices such as IP phones, IP cameras and wireless access points. (vs 15.4 watts per port for standard PoE switches). With 8 queues the 3800 series effectively prioritizes multimedia traffic to ensure reliable delivery.
HP has a complete Wireless product offering that performs like wired; the access points provide near-gigabit thru-put. The APs have been Wi-Fi certified and feature three-spatial-streams that deliver up to 900 Mbps. They also support beam-forming technology which improves RF coverage and reduces dead spots.
The optimized 3-tier design for the large enterprise is similar to the two tier version. In this case, in the intermediate aggregation layer 7500 switch IRF fabrics are implemented. The core and access layers are the same as in the 2-tier design. The WLAN controllers are connected to the aggregation layer.
In some cases as many as 75%of workers are outside the company corporate headquarters – but they are faced with poor application availability and poor performance. The branch typically has limited staff and operates in a low touch (or even no touch) model. Branches need pre-packaged equipment that can be dropped into a branch. FlexBranch delivers a Plug and Play remote network which provides simplicity and convergence of functionality and services. The FlexBranch solutions integrate best-in-class applications from a large ecosystem of alliance partners.
Yesterday, HP also announced new FlexBranch solutions that reduce application time to service by delivering a virtualization capability to the branch. The new zl modules for the 5400 and 8200 allow customers to deploy off the shelf virtualized applications right in the switch without requiring extra boxes, cables, power supplies or power.HP’s open virtualization switch platform integrates VMware vShere 5 or Citrix XenServer hypervisors. The services modules are designed to accelerate application delivery to branch offices while reducing expenses by virtualizing those applications rather than running them physically on a branch office server. The services modules for the 5400 and 8200 switches are available now and start at $5,299 for VMware and $4,499 for Citrix.
Here we have an example deployment for a branch office of 20 to 50 branch employees. We have such reference architectures for branches with less then 20 employees as well as larger branches with over 50 employees. As you can see a typical user scenario with 20-50 employees and all the requirements and the reference architecture and the capabilities that this brings together to address the customer need. The reference architecture is built on a modular switch chassis that integrates application on service module. The 5400 zl switch platform for delivering high-performance application services; easy and cost-effective migration to the highly available HP 8200 zl SwitchBest-in-class applications that are also standards based and integrated, running on modules inside the HP 5400 zl (or 8200 zl) Switch, for seamless, highly available service, simplified management, and power and cost savingsA choice of integrated, industry-leading UC&C solutions to improve collaboration and customer service and optimize the cost of voice servicesIndustry-leading UC&C solutions architected for branch with survivability for local calling out of the branch when the WAN link goes down otherwise utilizing the WAN bandwidth to make calls and minimizing telephony cost. Microsoft Survivable Branch Communication zl Module delivers this capability within the ZL switch chassis. The industry-leading Video over IP solution, enabling delivery of high-quality, non-proprietary, and reliable video-distribution applicationsBetter remote application performance with WAN accelerationHigh-bandwidth connectivity without any WAN upgrades or associated recurring costsRouting services are delivered at a T1/E1 rate for faster and more reliable access to the services, applications, tools, and information that branch office employees need to be successful.A modular router for increased business agilityBranch server consolidation and virtualization to minimize physical IT assets and maintenance costs and simplify and pool resources for better and more reliable performanceA WLAN controller hosted in the data center to enable all wireless security, QoS, and other policies to be centrally defined, ensuring that a consistent set of services—and consistent performance—is delivered throughout the HP wireless infrastructureIndustry-leading intrusion detection/prevention for in-depth security and services reliability Transition: All working together as a single converged solution to address customer branch needs in helping customer enhance user productivity be the service hosted in corporate data center or be it sourced from the cloud.
The FlexNetwork architecture provides the infrastructure blueprint for Virtual Application Networks. It is the industry’s only architecture, converging the data center, campus, and branch based on open-industry standards and delivering consistency with a single-pane-of-glass management.

Click #7: And just a few weeks ago, we announced the industry’s first cloud network technology that enables the deployment of cloud applications in minutes rather than months with Virtual Application Networks.
The cloud promises a lot to businesses. The cloud promises the ability to deploy applications in minutesThe cloud promises to deliver applications and information to any user on any deviceThe cloud promises to simplify management. Click #1: Well, we aren’t there yet. This is what I call the “promise and reality dividing line.”Click #2: The realities is it takes months deploy new applications. Click #3: According to a recent report by the SANS institute, 60% of enterprises with a BYOD policy are unsure which mobile devices are on their networks. This represents a critical risk to businesses and Government organizations.Click #4: And over 70 of network downtime is caused by CLI misconfiguration
Let’s focus on the amount of time it takes to connect an application to the network. A system administrator uses tools that allow him to manage with policies rather than command lines. His policy-based tools enable speed, consistency and reliability. But, when he needs to connect to the network, it’s a very different story for the network administrator. Legacy network administrators are forced to use a command line interface, which is based on 40-year old technology. Rather than managing with policies, he has to ask the system admin a series of low-level questions before he even begins configuring the network with the CLI. In a recent meeting with a CIO, he told me he believes “If you’re using the CLI and scripts, you’ve already lost the battle for cloud.“According to analyst data, a typical data center may have 500 servers with each of them running 20 virtualized workloads. That’s 10,000 workloads! Each workload requires at least 6 network attributes. The network admin has to use over 250,000 command line entries to configure these 60,000 network attributes on a port-by-port basis across dozens of switches! Imagine, even if someone is a really good typist, they are probably bound to make a mistake once every few thousand entries. That’s is still 250 errors AND you have to find them! That’s what makes this manual process long, inconsistent and unreliable.
Application IndifferentSo, the problem is pretty clear. Deploying applications in the data center takes too long, is inconsistent and the use of a command line interface makes the process unreliable. It is not just about connectivity of applications in the data center, it is also about delivering applications to users, in the campuses and branch locations of the network. Our virtual application network vision delivers a whole solution from deploying applications in the data center to connecting users to applications across the network. Legacy networks are application indifferent. Legacy switches and routers forward thousands of packets every second in exactly the same manner without any awareness or knowledge of the applications carried within them. As a result, these legacy networks are unable to meet specific service levels when delivering applications to users. Rigid Physical InfrastructureLegacy networks are also rigid and physical. They were built for one type of tenant – the company. Today we need to connect suppliers, partners or customers. They were built for one type of user – using a PC. Now they use a smart phone and a tablet. They were built for one location – the company’s offices. Now most employees don’t work in corporate locations.Provisioning applications and users on legacy network is device-dependent – the company-owned servers and company-issued PCs and mobile phones. Cloud is changing everything like the Internet did 20 years ago. Legacy networks are like the roads that were built between cities and suburbs fifty years ago. Where and how people live and work has changed, but the roads haven’t. Like old roadways, legacy networks lack programmability necessary for the cloud. Manual ManagementLegacy networks requiring manual management with only a command line interface will be as useful as green-screen monitors are in the Internet era of rich media. Managing with the command line interface prevents the network administrator from responding quickly to business changes. In addition, the command line interface and its manual errors causing 70% of network outages must to be replaced with policy-based automation to create reliability. Only this will enable businesses to run at Cloud speed.
HP’s Virtual Application Networks are our vision for Software Defined Networks. Virtual Application Networks enable businesses to spend less time managing infrastructure and more on connecting users to applications.
Application CharacterizationVirtual Application Networks deliver Application characterization. Using preconfigured templates, IT can characterize the delivery requirements of an application from the data center to the user. These templates ensure applications or a class of applications is deployed consistently and repeatedly every time across the entire network. Network VirtualizationVirtual Application Networks deliver Network Virtualization. By virtualizing the network with an end-to-end control plane, we create a multi-tenant network that is programmable, delivering on-demand topology and device-independent provisioning allowing businesses to move a Cloud speed. Automated OrchestrationVirtual Application Networks deliver Automated Orchestration. Policy-based templates fully automate network configuration and provisioning to deliver expected service levels, increase speed, consistency and reliability.
Virtual Application Networks is a game changer. It is one you will feel comfortable with because it is similar to server virtualization. HP Virtual Application Networks will transform the networking industry the way hypervisors transformed the server industry. The end-to-end control plane is similar to a hypervisor. And Virtual Application Networks are similar to Virtual Machines (VMs).
Let’s go back to our original example of deploying an exchange instance and its virtual machines. Click #1: With Virtual Application Networks, the first step is to characterize the application delivery requirements for Exchange in the IMC VAN Manager Module. Click #2: Here, we build a connection profile from a preconfigured template. Click #3: The second step is to virtualize the server to network connectivity in VMware vCenter with a plug-in that comes with the IMC VAN Manager module. Click #4: Here, the sys admin simply chooses the connection profile for Exchange. Every time a new Exchange instance is deployed, the same profile is selected, ensuring speed, consistency and reliability. Click #5: The third step is to orchestrate the network with the IMC VAN Manager module where the Exchange VMs are visible after selecting the connection profile. Click #6: By simply “powering them on,” IMC will automatically configure the switches based on the connection profile. Click #7: The application is deployed in three easy steps! And I never had to touch the command line interface!
Let’s focus on the amount of time it takes to connect an application to the network. Let’s start with the tools that a server administrator uses. He uses tools that allow him to manage with policy. He has very sophisticated tools and when he needs to connect to the network, that’s where the delay comes in and it takes weeks. Just look at the questions that a network administrator asks the server admin. These are much lower level questions. Because he isn’t using advanced policy-based tools. He is using 40-year-old technology comprising command-line interface and scripts. As a matter of fact, in an interview with a CEO, he told his team, “If you’re using the CLIN scripts, you’ve already lost the battle for cloud. “ In a typical data center, according to Cindy Borovick from IDC, you could have 500 servers with all of them running a hypervisor, each carrying about 20 virtualized workloads. Well, there are 10,000 workloads with each one requiring, on an average, five network attributes and there are 50,000 network attributes that you have to configure on a port-by-port basis across dozens of switches—possibly 250,000 command line entries across those dozens of switches. Even if you have a really good IT organization, those network administrators are bound to make a mistake. Talking to Joe Skorupa from Gartner and his comment was, even if they are really good, they might make one mistake out of a thousand, that’s is still 250 errors and you’ve got to go find them—that’s the real tough part. This process is not only slow, but it presents a reliability problem.
IMC has earned bragging rights; it supports 6,085 devices from more than 220 manufacturers, of which 1400+ are from Cisco!I’ve heard clients say, although I can’t say who – that IMC manages Cisco better than Cisco can! - 1000+You heard Bethany talk about the IMC VAN Manager module and how it is used to characterize app delivery requirements, virtualize server to network connectivity and automate network orchestration. By integrating F5 management into IMC, we will bring together to industry innovations using policy-based template-driven management. We will integrate F5 iApps into the IMC VAN manager module which will deliver the industry’s first automated policy-based single pane-of-glass management from the application to the network to the userCharacterizing applications will include insights from F5 at Layers 4 – 7 including roundtrip latency and round trip application response time. We will be able to virtualize application, network and server resources. We will be able to fully automate orchestration from layers 2 – 7, an industry first. Let’s see how it will work.
