When Character Was King Essay
When Character Was King by: Peggy Noonan Ronald Reagan s life wasn t the greatest growing up.
He had some extreme difficulties with his parents and his childhood. His family wasn t categorized in
a social class; they didn t own anything like a farm, store, bank or industry. Ronald Reagan was born
on February 6, 1911 in Illinois, in a town called Tampico, in a one bedroom rental over a bank
building. His mother named him Ronald, but he didn t like it so he asked people to start calling him
what his father called him, Dutch. His father called him that because on the day he was born, his dad
ran up the stairs, looked at him and said that he looked like a fat little Dutchman. He had an older
brother named Neil who was two years older than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They didn t really eat very good meals, especially not like the ones we get today. They ate oatmeal
hamburgers, and his mother made it possible sometimes to make soup last a week. Ronald was never
proud of his childhood; he didn t want to look back at it. He wanted to leave those tough times in the
past. When Ronald was just six years old, World War I came to America. He knew about everything;
he saw the flags, heard the songs and he visited the soldiers when they came to town. Dutch couldn t
really keep friends so he learned not to need them too much. He became more of a reader and
someone who spent hours drawing and imagining. Ronald went to Eureka College, which was a very
small school in a small town in northern Illinois. It was extremely inexpensive for tuition, room and
board but he couldn t afford it even if they d accept him. He fell in love with the Illinois architecture,
Georgian style buildings covered in ivy, acres of land surrounded by trees. He went to Eureka College
one day to convince the president of the school and football coach s that he was terrific football
player, a lifeguard and a very good swimmer. They actually let him in, with a student scholarship and
a job that would pay for his meals and books. He played football and decided to go into campus
politics. He became the leader of a student revolt against deep and sudden campus cutbacks. He was
chosen as speaker for the cause, which made him feel that he could really hold an audience

Sacred Object In Religion
How does this sacred object as a material reality, make connections between the lived experiences of
believers and the sacred?
Good afternoon Ms Heyen and my fellow peers. Today I will be explaining how the Dharma Wheel,
my sacred object is a physical manifestation making connections between lived experienced for
believers and the sacred.
This sacred object, as a physical manifestation makes connections between the lived experience of
believers as it:
Helps adherents pray
Helps adherents use their body to create motivation and intention
To help adherents of suffering and to bring about peace in every human living organism.
And makes connections between the lived experiences of the sacred as it:
It shows buddhas path

The prayer wheel practice is visualized as a manifestation of the Body, Speech and Mind of the
Buddha. This makes connections between the lived experience of the sacred and believers, as they are
able to make connections with the buddha. With hands the prayer wheel is spun clockwise because the
mantra or prayer is written in the direction of the movement of the sun across the sky. With speech, we
recite one of the mantras in the prayer wheel. And with our mind, we engage in visualizations or
recitations, using our motivation and intention to bless all beings and bring peace to our surroundings
and the entire world.
The source shows An elderly Tibetan women holding a prayer wheel on the Lhasa s pilgrimage circuit
of Barkhor. The Barkhor, a quadrangle of streets that surrounds the Jokhang Temple, is both the
spiritual heart of the holy city and the main commercial district for Tibetans. This source helped me
understand how believers use their mantras to pray with this sacred object. As they use speech, mind,
modivation, and hands to bring enlightenment and

The Wedding Of Ursula Essay
When telling the story of Ursula s childhood, Lawrence tells us early on that, Ursula was the one for
realities. (259). From this point it is apparent that her story is going to be different. While she relies on
the hard realities of life and is very caught up in the things outside of her, her mind body conscious
self is just as active as Tom or Anna s. In fact, it may be even stronger for her because she seems to be
more aware of it: She became aware of herself, that she was a separate entity in the midst of an
unseparated obscurity, that she must go somewhere, she must become something. (Lawrence 281).
She has her first experience with love at an early age, when she encounters Anton Skrebensky. At one
point during their courtship, Anton comes to the wedding of Ursula s uncle, Fred, and Ursula has a
very distinct experience similar to the one her mother Anna had in the cornfield. At the touch of her

moon looking at her over the hill. And her breast opened to it, she was cleaved like a transparent jewel

for it, her body opened wide like a quivering anemone, a soft, dilated invitation touched by the moon.
She wanted the moon to fill in to her, she wanted more, more communion with the moon,
consummation. (Lawrence 316 17). In this passage, Ursula s will is dancing in a way with Skrebensky
s, but it is always separate. The moon has some deeper significance for her, as it did for Anna, as it

Analysis Of The Documentary Pirates, Galleons, And...
When watching Pirates, Galleons, and Treasure: Globe Trekker , one certainly does learn something
about pirates and their history. However, that does not mean the documentary is particularly useful. In
fact, the documentary while mostly accurate still has some small discrepancies and does not provide
enough detail for it to be helpful to those actually studying pirates. The documentary is a fun resource
for those who want basic facts, but leaves some facts to assumptions and seems to gloss over some
information. It tends to focuses on myths and interesting stories that may have been true rather than
the truth. More attention is also put on cities rather pirates and when it does focus on the pirates, it is
not done well. It tends to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pirates, Galleons and Treasure also shows pirate stories being romanticised when they speak about the
relationship of Anne Bonny and Calico Jack.
Within the documentary, Anne Bonny and Calico Jack are shown to be lovers and while that may be
true it is still not confirmed. The documentary presents this idea as a fact and even goes on to talk
about Bonny being the mother of his child, leaving out the fact that it is also speculated that Bonny
had slept with her jailors so it is not confirmed that it is his child (Konstam, 2011, p.166). Bonny s
father is said to have had a possible role in her escape (Konstam, 2011, p.185), instead of the claim
that no one knows at all where she could have gone in the documentary. Also in the video, Calico Jack
is said to be responsible for designing the skull and cross bone flag (Pirates, Galleons and Treasure,
2007), when the flag had been first been spotted in 1700 by a pirate named Wyn way before Calico
Jack (The Golden Age, 2016) and the only pirate to be known to fly a true skull and cross bone flag is
Edward England (Konstam, 2011, p.193). Essentially, Pirates, Galleons and Treasures does not seem
to show accurate or unbiased information, or at least towards the pirates they talk about. This
documentary seems to portray pirates in a positive

The United States Railway System
The United States railway system is almost as old as the nation itself. If it was not for the railway
system, our country may not have become one of the most lucrative superpowers it is today. Colonel
John Stevens is credited for first presenting the idea of building a railway in 1812. Mr. Stevens
probably did not expect the railway system to become the massive technological innovation it once
became. The railway systems in the United States originally consisted of carriages and wagons being
pulled down a track by a horse or two. This form of train was most commonly used for transporting
freight.
Luckily, Colonel Stevens received the first ever railway grant in 1815 to construct the New Jersey
Railroad Company. By 1826, Stevens tested the first steam engine train in the United States, known as
the Steam Wagon. The Steam Wagon relied on the power of steam to move. Coal was shoveled into
something called a firebox. The heat created from the burning coals was used to convert water into
steam. Smoke was released through the chimney while the heat boiled the water, which created steam.
The steam was then relocated to the cylinders through the steam pipes, where they created the power
to move the wheels of the train. It did take some time to build up enough steam to start move the train.
However when enough steam was built up, the conductors of the train would blow the whistle to
signal being ready to leave the station.
In 1827, the Baltimore and Ohio railway was

Period. It is earthenware with low fire enamel decoration. The fall aesthetic is extremely evident on
this piece of pottery. The coloring of the pottery is mostly oranges, browns, and dark greens. There are
also a few bright colors like blue and pink, but those are subdued by the other colors. The interior
design use of chrysanthemums is pivotal in the fall aesthetic. Chrysanthemums are a flower associated

Partisan Political Analysis
Partisan Politics After the American states drafted the Constitution, there were conflicting ideas
concerning how the states should be governed. Some believed that a strong federal government should
wield most of the governing powers, but there was another group that opposed a strong federal
government. This group, known as the Republicans, believed that the majority of governing powers
should reside in state legislatures. Republicans felt that the powers of the federal government should
be limited, and the Republicans believed that the Constitution supported this idea. The Republicans
argued against the formation of a national bank. During the debate over the national bank, Thomas
Jefferson argued that [t]he incorporation of a bank, and the powers assumed by this bill, have not, in
my opinion, been delegated to the United States, by the Constitution (Debate on p. 1). The
Republicans did agree that the Constitution gave the federal government the power to raise money to
pay the nation s collective debt, but no debt [was] paid by this bill; nor any tax laid (Debate on p. 1).

In the Kentucky Resolutions, Republicans argued that the federal government was creating laws that
were void and of no force to punish crimes (Virginia and p. 1). Using the Tenth Amendment to support
their claims, Republicans argued that the Constitution granted the federal government the power to
punish citizens for treason, counterfeiting ... piracies and felonies committed on the high seas, and
offenses against the laws of nations, and no other crimes whatsoever (Virginia and p. 1). Since the
Constitution did not state that the federal government could punish other crimes, Republicans believed
that the states should be allowed to punish the crimes that were not listed in the

Q1. How do we elaborate on behavior and mental processes regarding the definition of psychology?
We elaborate on behavior and mental processes regarding the definition of psychology by studying
people, their behaviors, their thoughts and feelings, and trying to predict their next move.
Q2. Explain John Locke s argument that the mind at birth is a blank slate, and how did that contradict
some of the earlier philosophers such as Plato and Rene Descartes.
John Locke s argument is that everybody is born with a tabula rasa, meaning a blank slate on which
experiences wires. Whereas, for Plato and Descartes, they believe that knowledge is born within us or
innate.
Q3. Describe Wilhelm Wundt s first experiment and why is it considered the first experiment in the
field of psychology.
Wilhelm Wundt s first experiment involved using a machine that measured the time lag between a
person hearing a ball hit a platform, and a person pressing a telegraph key. They also decided to test to
press a key when they were consciously aware of perceiving a sound. Overall, he conducted a series of
studies dealing with the elements of consciousness, becoming the first experiment in the field of
psychology because of the reliance, psychologists had on his invention.

The Fish Story Symbolism
The fish in Fish Story symbolizes a transitional period for the boy, who acts as the narrator. Many
times it is said that your eyes are the windows to your soul, in Fish Story the fish s eyes acted as a
symbolic window into the narrator s soul. Being a boy of 10 years old he is suspended between the
world of childhood innocence and raw uncensored adulthood. From early on the boy connects with the
fish as he is describing the fish s eyes, The fish, in turn, studied me with its round, obsidian eyes,
which had a gold lining to their perimeter, like pyrite (p. 1, par. 5, Bass, 2009). This shows the amount
of consideration that the boy puts into the fish. He sees it as more than that of a meal or payment of a

the alcohol consumed, if not directly, he makes mention of the fact it is present several times
throughout the story.
As he is forced into the harsh reality of adulthood he notices the fish changing too, once again in the
fish s eyes, I kept watering the fish. The gasps were coming slower and I felt that perhaps a fire was
going out in the fish s eyes (p. 3, par. 22, Bass, 2009). Just as the water is turned off by Jack s dad, the
narrator s innocence starts a downward spiral. He no longer has that lifeline to the fish. He starts
seeing changes in the fish s appearance Immediately, or so it seemed to me, a fine wrinkling appeared
on the previously taut gunmetal skin of the fish a desiccation, like watching a time lapse motion
picture of a man s or woman s skin wrinkling as he or she ages, regardless of the man s or woman s
wishes to the contrary (p. 3, par. 24, Bass, 2009). With this reference he is implying the desire to stay
young and to not age, to not be aware of the eventual end. As Jack s father is prepping the fish for the
fire the boy is shocked, and disgusted

As a result of the Burnap brothers great influence on him and his experiences at the Chester Academy,

At Middlebury College, he was very active in the Philomathesian Literary Society and studied
parliamentary procedure and learned how to debate. He also published, The Undergraduate, the first of
many newspapers he would start throughout his lifetime. After graduation, at the age of twenty one in

Blanchard was required to travel on a regular basis because of his involvement in the anti slavery
movement. His journeys provided him with many opportunities and eventually led to several
academic offers. In 1843, Jonathan traveled to London as a delegate to the world s Anti Slavery
Convention. The next year he traveled to Quincy, Illinois to deliver a commencement address to the
Adelphi Theopolis Mission Institute. From 1845 to 1857 he was the president of Knox College in
Illinois. In 1860 he turned down the offer for the presidency at Iowa College and a nomination to run

Feeling Like A Role Model
Feeling like a role model was an amazing sensation. Working as a customer experience representative
was emotionally validating in itself. Yet when combined with an audience, the work became doubly
fulfilling. In some ways, it boosted her self esteem and drove her to become the best version of
herself. She noticed that when her daily life was made transparent, her words and actions became
happier, more altruistic, and more intellectually interesting. She had been told that this would be a
positive effect of going transparent, but she had not anticipated other changes. She had not anticipated
that being transparent would actually redirect some of her less than perfect habits. The camera s
influence caused her to think more carefully about the way she presented herself. When she thought of
her viewers seeing her choices, she felt pressured to make healthy choices. Thus, she abstained from
sugary foods, and consumed socially acceptable levels of alcohol. When she thought of the camera
catching her consuming aspirin, she was ashamed of the image that this might project and rerouted her
behavior. Thus, she entered a life where she abstained from the parts of her life that she found
imperfect. Being watched was a way to curb bad behavior. Mae found this freeing, and she was
revered as a role model for this projected perfection. This in turn gave Mae the responsibility of
bringing light to the lives of her viewers. This was a duty that kept her going day to day.

Genocide In The American Genocide
Genocide; the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular nation or
ethnic group (Oxford, 2017). The origin of the term genocide and codification in international law
have roots in the mass murder of Armenians in 1915 to 1916, lawyer Raphael Lemkin coined the term
and was repeatedly stated in newspaper stories about the crimes against the Armenians. In 1915 the
Turkish government set a plan to massacre Armenians living in the Ottoman Empire. About 2 million
Armenians were in the Ottoman Empire at the time of the plan of the mass murders and the
deportations, in the end 1.5 million of Turkey s Armenians were dead or forcefully removed from the
country (History Staff, 2010). Although many call this event a genocide the Turkish government does
not acknowledge the scope of this event, making it illegal in the country to talk about what happened
to the Armenians during that time. The Armenian Genocide also at times is called the first genocide of
the twentieth century. (UHMMS,) As told by Robert Melson, the perpetrators of the Armenian
Genocide were motivated by nationalist ideology. (Melson, 1996) The victims within the Armenian
Genocide were territorial ethnic groups ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Parent Child Relationships in Before You Were Mine, Kid, On My First Sonne, and The Song Of The
Old Mother
All of the poems are about emotions and parent child relationships. In
Before You Were Mine, the girl idolises and loves her mother. Whereas the man in Kid feels angry
towards his father, and resents him too. In the poem On My First Sonne, the father loves his son a lot
and feels grief for his dead son. Which is different from The Song Of The Old
Mother as in this the mother is angry and annoyed at her children. I shall look for similarities and
differences in the parent child relationships that are in all four of the poems.
The use of structure in Kid shows the past and present in a chronological way, it s like a ... Show more

For instance, ...the fire flicker and glow this shows the start of her day. Then the middle shows she
works hard ...I must scrub and bake and sweep. Finally, the end of her day ...fire gets feeble and cold.
This is effective because it shows that she is a hard working mother.
This is also similar to On My First Sonne as it is also one long verse. Lines one to four show the
meaning to loss of his son Farwell, thou child of my right hand, and joy. Then the middle lines show
the father asking questions full of grief For why will man lament the state he should envie? Finally, he
accepts his loss ...all his vows be such. The themes in Before You Were Mine are about growing up
and looking back with memories and thinking of all the positive things which happened. For example,
Cha cha cha! You d teach me the steps... This gives the impression that there was a strong bonding
between the mother and child because there was a lot of parent love. This is similar to On My First
Sonne because the parent child relationship is full of love. For instance it says, Farewell, thou child of
my right hand, and joy. This shows that there is a lot of love and care from the parent towards his son.
His son was his pride. I think that these two poems have a strong parent child relationship, because
both of the parents show a lot of love and affection towards there children. This makes me as a reader

out that their favorite character can become evil and think themselves a god.
#1 The Infinity Stones
Now, the Infinity Stones are a subject of interest in all the Marvel movies. There is a tidbit here and
there that rounds up all of the Marvel characters together.
But many do not understand that the Infinity Stones is not about power. It is a courtship between
Thanos and Death. Thanos yearns for Death s affection and the only way he can do that is to collect
the stones and form the gauntlet.
The Infinity Gauntlet will enable Thanos to kill billions and even trillions of lives, all of which will be
given as gifts to Death. This is considerably one of the most insane courtship rituals in the Marvel
Comics and one that stands out most of the Avenger films.
Eventually, the movie will close the story of the Infinity Stones in Avengers: Infinity War, Guardians
of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Thor:

Romanticism As A Source Of Spirituality
Classification
Romanticism is a time period in history based on a cultural revolution. It is defined differently based
on geographical location, however it overall incorporates the same common principles: (1)
imagination, (2) individuality, (3) nature as a source of spirituality, (4) looking to the past for wisdom,
and (5) seeing the common man as a hero. These common principles are what inspired writers and
artists of the time to fabricate ideas. This is how the period got named romanticism for the term
romantic, [was] long synonymous with false, fictitious and unnatural (Courthion, 1961, p. 7). Defining
the movement is what overtime pulled the art community away from the previous baroque era. By the
late 1700s romance thus had come to refer broadly to any work that could be distinguished from
works principally realistic in form and subject matter (Davey, 2006). Against the common
misconception, the Romantic Movement was not considered to be strongly influenced by love. Instead
the historically been associated with narratives of adventure, romance, and myth as opposed to
realistic stories or portrayals of history, politics, or everyday life (Romanticism, 2014).
The Beginning Historians associate the Romantic Movement as coming out of Europe as [it was a]
reaction to Napoleonic era conservatism and the political norms and the rationalization of nature
associated with Enlightenment (Romanticism, 2014). The focus on romantic literature commenced in

international community and foreign diplomats assigned to Somalia play an integral role in facilitating

Clarifying and amending the ambiguous and inconsistent constitutional clauses in the constitution,

Imperialism In Latin America
The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were marked by periods of decolonization, along with the
emergence of sovereign states. Among these areas to assert their independence in the nineteenth
century were the countries of Latin America. Yet, all the while fighting for, and eventually winning
their independence, problems began to arise over the idea of how to rule over a cohesive group of
people. Within Latin America existed a diverse group of inhabitants. The issue of how to rally and
celebrate as one culture, and who were the actual citizens were emerged to be complicated issues.
Therefore, in order to create a cohesive community, the countries of Latin America attempted to
banish any traces of their colonial rulers by using symbols and names to instill a new sense of
togetherness, and symbolize their new nation. Often used by the people of Latin America were pre
colonial symbols, and in later times heroes of the revolution were also used as a nationalistic rallying
point. Although patriotism may have been fairly easy to engender in its people, deciding on the rules

America, The Land Of Opportunity
Henry Schineller

American Literature
21 May, 2016
Rough Draft America, the land of opportunity. A majestic land where barriers are broken and dreams
are made into reality. A land where anything is possible with a little hard work and determination. One
may ask what makes a place this possible. The answer to that question is the people. Americans have a
certain way about them that makes them different from any other people on earth. All Americans are
heroes in some way, but a select few stand out in history as the most influential. One such individual is
Jackie Robinson. Robinson redefined racial stereotypes by becoming the first African American
baseball player to play in the Major League. Through his courage, determination, and perseverance,
his legacy still continues to this date. One could argue numerous reasons that constitute Jackie
Robinson as an American hero, but four stand out among the rest. Those reasons being that he fought
for what he believed was right, overcame adversity, conquered many athletic feats, and had a lasting
legacy. For these reasons Jackie Robinson truly embodies an American hero. The definition of a hero
is: a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities (Merriam Webster). An American
hero is someone who, yes follows this definition, but completes it in a way that furthers America as a
nation. A true American hero leaves a lasting impression that will be remembered for generations to
come. An American hero must

Psychological Trauma Essay
The term Psychological trauma refers to damage wrought from a traumatic event, which that damages
one s ability to cope with stressors. Trauma is commonly defined as an exposure to a situation in
which a person is confronted with an event that involves actual or threatened death or serious injury,
or a threat to self or others physical well being (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). Specific
types of client trauma frequently encountered by which therapists and other mental health workers
frequently encounter in a clinical setting include sexual abuse, physical , or sexual assault, natural
disasters such as earthquakes or tsunamis, domestic violence, and school or/and work related violence
(James Gilliland, 2001). Traumatic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Van der Kolk (1987) notes that human responses to trauma are relatively constant across various types
of traumatic stimuli, where individuals have poor tolerance to arousal stimuli and may experience
social and emotional withdrawal. These changes in the body s arousal and perception prevent the
continuance of normal life, and require help. Traumatic events also produce profound and lasting
changes in physiological arousal, emotion, cognition, and memory. Moreover, traumatic events may
result in the severance of these normally integrated functions from one another. Traumatized
individuals may also suffer from the memories of the tragic or horrifying experiences they have
undergone. Frequently, as a result of these many symptoms, it becomes inevitable for the individual to
develop certain complications associated with trauma related disorders, such as posttraumatic stress
disorder. Herman (1992) categorizes the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder into three major
categories: hyperarousal, intrusion, and constriction. She describes hyperarousal as the persistent
expectation of danger, intrusion as the indelible imprint of the traumatic moment, and constriction as
the numbing response of surrender (Herman, 1992, p. 35). There is, however, evidence that suggests

The Portrayal Of Children s Books
Introduction
Children are highly acquiescent, and as such the media they consume is highly important in their
socialization. Taking into consideration the ubiquity of media and the degree to which it is entwined in
the lives of children, it is important that we be concerned with the themes presented in children s
media including books. As noted by Taylor (2003), Children s books are an important cultural
mechanism for teaching children gender roles. If children are exposed to stereotypical images in
children s books, they may adopt these as normative, and may adjust their actions accordingly
(Paynter, 2011). Given this, it is important to examine the representation(s) of gender in children s
books. In this paper I will discuss the depiction of gender in children s books, focusing particularly on
the manner in which boys and girls are portrayed in children s literature. In my discussion, I will draw
on Paul Kramer s children s book Maggie Goes on a Diet to illustrate problematic themes that are
prevalent in the current children s literature.
Literature Review
As social learning theory and gender schema theory explain, children exposed to gender role
stereotyping in the media, including children s literature, may internalize these gender stereotypes
(Bandura, 1971). According to gender schema theory, gendered characteristics are conserved and
transmitted to other members of a culture via schemata (Bem, 1993). Children form schemata of what

Importance Of Cultural Diversity In Schools
Cultural diversity has been an important topic amongst school systems for quite some time now. There
have been events that have occurred in history that have aided to the discussion, whether it is positive
or negative. Events that have stood out from the crowd include segregated schools that wanted nothing
to do with a race outside their own and schools that were eventually integrated but not taught fairly to
those amongst them. These events shaped the future for our school systems today and as educators, it
is our job to learn from them ourselves as well as educate students in regards to this sensitive, very
real manner.
Cultural diversity covers an array of areas. Culture in itself is, that complex whole which includes
knowledge, belief, arts, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by a
human as a member of society, (UNESCO, n.d.). Different senses of culture are in multitude when one
takes a look at society as a whole. No two types of individuals, from different cultural backgrounds,
are the same on many different levels of living much less in school learning. This area of importance
begins in the classroom. For our students, cultural diversity is seen through the lens of society, which
is not always clear. As the teacher, an individual has to create a socially accepted environment for each
and every student that walks through his or her door on a daily basis. In doing so, as a part of a lesson
we will select groups and research key

The Impact Of Federal Government On Aviation Development...
The answer to this capstone question will examine the role the Federal Government in the
development of aviation in the United States. The discussion will discuss the three ways in which the
Federal Government became involved in aviation development and cite an example in each of those
cases. The resulting effect on aviation development of such involvement will also be explored. Body
In examining the history of aviation in the U.S. and the development of the airlines, it is clear that the
Federal Government played a vital role in the development of both. Historical records clearly show
that this involvement by the Federal Government was critical in getting them established and in
helping to develop them into the globally dominant enterprises they are today. Furthermore, it can be
easily argued that U.S. aviation as a whole, and the airlines in particular, would not be where they are
today without this direct involvement by the Federal Government and some of the very specific
actions that it has taken to keep them relevant and competitive during the most dire of times. The
Federal Government ensured that U.S. aviation and its airlines would develop and achieve a
worldwide leadership role by becoming involved in three major ways: through funding, legislation,
and policy setting. As any person or organization involved in getting a product to market can attest to,
the endeavor involves a costly process that starts with acquiring the funds for research and

`` On Teenagers And Tattoos `` By Andres Martin Essay
Teenagers are rebellious by nature, as adolescence adventures down the road of self identity. Teens are
often viewed as the miscreants or vandals that plague the streets with their toxicity and obscene
tendencies, and although aggravating, proves vital for increased maturity in future endeavors.
However, teens can make decisions that last a lifetime, for example, tattoos. Tattoos are fairly
controversial at younger ages, but are growing more and more popular amongst adolescents with the
introduction and glorification of such body art by varying media, such as celebrities. Teenagers are
exploring the realm of body modifications at ever increasing rate, but contradictory to common
opinion, tattoos are a great candidate for an emotional catalyst, source of stability in a time of need, or
reminders of time long far gone.
On Teenagers and Tattoos is an informational article, written by Andres Martin, which discusses the
reasons and psychology behind the rising popularity of tattoos amongst adolescents. Martin (2000)
starts by identifying the simple reason of causation concerning the spike, stating that tattoos and
piercing can offer a concrete and readily available solution for many of the identity crises and conflicts
normative to adolescent development (p.143). Martin then details the strenuous nature of adolescence,
and shows that tattoos have more of a symbolic meaning than just a skull, and provides 2 examples of
such cases. Afterward, Martin explains in further detail,

Many of Edgar Allan Poe s works have made impacts upon how the world is viewed. Poe s works
create a more morbid outlook as opposed to that of intrigue and wonder. Poe s poem titled Fairyland

creates a theme of longingness for meaning and explanation of the world. Poe s poem titled Fairyland

West Nile Fever Case Study
West Nile fever is caused by the West Nile Virus. Describe the emergence of novel disease in the
Western hemisphere. Provide some examples of sources on infection for novel disease, including the
mode of transmission for WNV. Why is this a concern? West Nile Virus (WNV) has caused a global
pathogen with a significant morbidity and mortality. It was first discovered in the West Nile District of
Uganda in 1937 (Roehrig, 2013). It was first seen in the United States in 1999 and has been estimated
to cause more than 3 million infections, resulting in over 780,000 illnesses, 38,000 clinically
confirmed cases, and 1,500 deaths between 1999 and 2014 (Suthar Pulendran, 2014, p. 70). The
transmission cycle of WNV is between mosquitoes and birds. Some infected birds can develop high
levels of the virus in its bloodstream and mosquitoes can become infected after biting the infected
birds. The infected mosquitoes can pass the virus to more birds after biting them. The infected
mosquitoes can transfer the virus when it bit other mammals and people. Fortunately, people infected
with the virus will not be able to pass the virus to other people because humans do not develop a high
level of virus in their bloodstream. According to Denman and Hart (2013), the WNV has complex

How To Write A Reflective Practitioner Essay
Teaching Statement
When I think about teaching I think about my coaching philosophy, which has developed from 15
years of experience. A coach has tremendous influence on the physical and psychological
development of their athletes young and old. The primary responsibility of the coach is to enable their
athlete to attain levels of performance not otherwise achievable: therefore, coaches need to develop
skills to motivate athletes and establish the right conditions for learning. Being an effective coach is
more than understanding the technical knowledge of sport, but also knowing how to build trusting
kinesthetic relationships.
My role as a coach is to connect with, engage, excite, and empower athletes, regardless of their
athletic ability, and I try to embody this in my teaching. Through past experiences teaching diverse

The Hidden Horrors of Mass Produced Food The way we eat has changed more in the last fifty years
than in the past ten thousand. (Food, Inc.) Farming first emerged as a large scale industry during the
Industrial Revolution. The transition from small, local farms to larger, corporate owned businesses
began when machines were more readily available and much more efficient. However, another factor
in the creation of the current industrial food system, including factory farming, is the advent of fast
food, beginning in the 1930s. Food had to be uniform and cheap for both the company and the
consumers (Food, Inc.). Another contributing factor is increased demand for animal products, ... Show

Factory farming isn t just harming the environment, it is also extremely cruel to the animals on these
farms. The American poultry industry kills approximately 8.6 million chickens for meat every year,
and another 300 million hens produce eggs (A Closer), and the treatment of these chickens is anything
but humane. A recent video published by The Huffington Post, Tyson: Exposed, shows the cruel
treatment of chickens at several Tyson Foods chicken breeding facilities. The video is incredibly
graphic, showing workers standing on birds heads to crush their skulls, kicking and beating birds, all
while admitting that what they re doing cannot be exposed (Hanson). Tyson Foods is the largest

Determinism And Free Will In Harry Potter And The Prisoner...
The controversy of whether the doctrine of determinism or free will guides us throughout our life is
constantly debated. Is there a superior being that determines everything that occurs, or are humans free
to do whatever they choose? In stories, the collaboration of fate and free will propels the actions of
characters throughout the plot. In J.K. Rowling s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, there is a
certain fate ordained, but there is free will that brings the characters to their fates. On the contrary, the
chorus of Euripides Medea states the gods find a way, against all expectation, to do what they
want...And that is exactly how this case turned out (Euripides 1467 1469), suggesting that whatever
Medea does is constrained the the fate determined by the gods. That she enacts the judgement of the
gods is what she considers the bindings of fate, but under the lens of Harry Potter, Rowling would
treat this as free will that endows fate.
The notion that there is a superior force that decides fate is present in the novel and the play, although
the extent of this power contrasts. Dumbledore acts as a semi god figure in Harry Potter, determining
the fates of Buckbeak and Sirius Black by pushing Hermione and Harry to use the Time Turner. Had
he not opened up this possibility to them, the salvation of the doomed characters would not have been
possible. As the events unfold with the time travel, Buckbeak s liberation from execution leads
Dumbledore to remark How

Tonal Sensitivity
It doesn t take a musical genius with perfect pitch to tell when a piano is in tune. When your piano is
adjusted properly, music sounds correct to our ears. When it isn t, your home piano sounds more like
what you d expect to hear in a saloon during a gunfight at the OK Corral.
The reason for this is the result of two things:
Small variations in the sound waves created by the piano that compound over time
Cultural expectations with regards to music
To understand these ideas, you first have to have a basic understanding of how sound is created.
Sound Waves and Hertz
A sound wave is defined as a disturbance through a medium in the case of your piano, the vibrating
strings cause a disturbance in the air around you. Your ears detect this ... Show more content on

As these changes impact all of the strings on your piano, the notes begin to sound unrelated to each
other. A change of even a few Hz can cause your ear to notice and the result is rarely pleasing to hear.
Tonal Sensitivity
The reason listeners react so strongly to these minor changes is related to the Western style of music.
In the simplest terms, our music is built around related notes. These are called scales and modes. A
major scale, for example, will often sound happy and bouncy to us. On the other hand, minor scales
sound sad or spooky.
Scales in our system of music are defined more by the proper difference in pitch between notes than
the starting or stopping point of the scale. When those gaps between notes are incorrect, the overall
feel of the scale or mode is lost. That s why a poorly tuned piano strikes us immediately as wrong we
ve heard so much music that our ears expect a certain result and notice when it is lost.
The moral of the story is this: Your piano will almost undoubtedly go out of tune over time, and your
ears will certainly notice. Investing in a professional to tune your instrument periodically is the only
way to ensure that your playing provides the maximum amount of enjoyment for both you and your

  • 2. When Character Was King Essay When Character Was King by: Peggy Noonan Ronald Reagan s life wasn t the greatest growing up. He had some extreme difficulties with his parents and his childhood. His family wasn t categorized in a social class; they didn t own anything like a farm, store, bank or industry. Ronald Reagan was born on February 6, 1911 in Illinois, in a town called Tampico, in a one bedroom rental over a bank building. His mother named him Ronald, but he didn t like it so he asked people to start calling him what his father called him, Dutch. His father called him that because on the day he was born, his dad ran up the stairs, looked at him and said that he looked like a fat little Dutchman. He had an older brother named Neil who was two years older than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They didn t really eat very good meals, especially not like the ones we get today. They ate oatmeal hamburgers, and his mother made it possible sometimes to make soup last a week. Ronald was never proud of his childhood; he didn t want to look back at it. He wanted to leave those tough times in the past. When Ronald was just six years old, World War I came to America. He knew about everything; he saw the flags, heard the songs and he visited the soldiers when they came to town. Dutch couldn t really keep friends so he learned not to need them too much. He became more of a reader and someone who spent hours drawing and imagining. Ronald went to Eureka College, which was a very small school in a small town in northern Illinois. It was extremely inexpensive for tuition, room and board but he couldn t afford it even if they d accept him. He fell in love with the Illinois architecture, Georgian style buildings covered in ivy, acres of land surrounded by trees. He went to Eureka College one day to convince the president of the school and football coach s that he was terrific football player, a lifeguard and a very good swimmer. They actually let him in, with a student scholarship and a job that would pay for his meals and books. He played football and decided to go into campus politics. He became the leader of a student revolt against deep and sudden campus cutbacks. He was chosen as speaker for the cause, which made him feel that he could really hold an audience ... • 3. Sacred Object In Religion How does this sacred object as a material reality, make connections between the lived experiences of believers and the sacred? Good afternoon Ms Heyen and my fellow peers. Today I will be explaining how the Dharma Wheel, my sacred object is a physical manifestation making connections between lived experienced for believers and the sacred. This sacred object, as a physical manifestation makes connections between the lived experience of believers as it: Helps adherents pray Helps adherents use their body to create motivation and intention To help adherents of suffering and to bring about peace in every human living organism. The prayer wheel practice is visualized as a manifestation of the Body, Speech and Mind of the Buddha. This makes connections between the lived experience of the sacred and believers, as they are able to make connections with the buddha. With hands the prayer wheel is spun clockwise because the mantra or prayer is written in the direction of the movement of the sun across the sky. With speech, we recite one of the mantras in the prayer wheel. And with our mind, we engage in visualizations or recitations, using our motivation and intention to bless all beings and bring peace to our surroundings and the entire world. The source shows An elderly Tibetan women holding a prayer wheel on the Lhasa s pilgrimage circuit of Barkhor. The Barkhor, a quadrangle of streets that surrounds the Jokhang Temple, is both the spiritual heart of the holy city and the main commercial district for Tibetans. This source helped me understand how believers use their mantras to pray with this sacred object. As they use speech, mind, modivation, and hands to bring enlightenment and ... • 4. The Wedding Of Ursula Essay When telling the story of Ursula s childhood, Lawrence tells us early on that, Ursula was the one for realities. (259). From this point it is apparent that her story is going to be different. While she relies on the hard realities of life and is very caught up in the things outside of her, her mind body conscious self is just as active as Tom or Anna s. In fact, it may be even stronger for her because she seems to be more aware of it: She became aware of herself, that she was a separate entity in the midst of an unseparated obscurity, that she must go somewhere, she must become something. (Lawrence 281). She has her first experience with love at an early age, when she encounters Anton Skrebensky. At one point during their courtship, Anton comes to the wedding of Ursula s uncle, Fred, and Ursula has a very distinct experience similar to the one her mother Anna had in the cornfield. At the touch of her hand on his arm, his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And her breast opened to it, she was cleaved like a transparent jewel to its light. She stood filled with the full moon, offering herself. Her two breasts opened to make way for it, her body opened wide like a quivering anemone, a soft, dilated invitation touched by the moon. She wanted the moon to fill in to her, she wanted more, more communion with the moon, consummation. (Lawrence 316 17). In this passage, Ursula s will is dancing in a way with Skrebensky s, but it is always separate. The moon has some deeper significance for her, as it did for Anna, as it pierces the darkness, entering and becoming her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Analysis Of The Documentary Pirates, Galleons, And... When watching Pirates, Galleons, and Treasure: Globe Trekker , one certainly does learn something about pirates and their history. However, that does not mean the documentary is particularly useful. In fact, the documentary while mostly accurate still has some small discrepancies and does not provide enough detail for it to be helpful to those actually studying pirates. The documentary is a fun resource for those who want basic facts, but leaves some facts to assumptions and seems to gloss over some information. It tends to focuses on myths and interesting stories that may have been true rather than the truth. More attention is also put on cities rather pirates and when it does focus on the pirates, it is not done well. It tends to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pirates, Galleons and Treasure also shows pirate stories being romanticised when they speak about the relationship of Anne Bonny and Calico Jack. Within the documentary, Anne Bonny and Calico Jack are shown to be lovers and while that may be true it is still not confirmed. The documentary presents this idea as a fact and even goes on to talk about Bonny being the mother of his child, leaving out the fact that it is also speculated that Bonny had slept with her jailors so it is not confirmed that it is his child (Konstam, 2011, p.166). Bonny s father is said to have had a possible role in her escape (Konstam, 2011, p.185), instead of the claim that no one knows at all where she could have gone in the documentary. Also in the video, Calico Jack is said to be responsible for designing the skull and cross bone flag (Pirates, Galleons and Treasure, 2007), when the flag had been first been spotted in 1700 by a pirate named Wyn way before Calico Jack (The Golden Age, 2016) and the only pirate to be known to fly a true skull and cross bone flag is Edward England (Konstam, 2011, p.193). Essentially, Pirates, Galleons and Treasures does not seem to show accurate or unbiased information, or at least towards the pirates they talk about. • 6. The United States Railway System The United States railway system is almost as old as the nation itself. If it was not for the railway system, our country may not have become one of the most lucrative superpowers it is today. Colonel John Stevens is credited for first presenting the idea of building a railway in 1812. Mr. Stevens probably did not expect the railway system to become the massive technological innovation it once became. The railway systems in the United States originally consisted of carriages and wagons being pulled down a track by a horse or two. This form of train was most commonly used for transporting freight. Luckily, Colonel Stevens received the first ever railway grant in 1815 to construct the New Jersey Railroad Company. By 1826, Stevens tested the first steam engine train in the United States, known as the Steam Wagon. The Steam Wagon relied on the power of steam to move. Coal was shoveled into something called a firebox. The heat created from the burning coals was used to convert water into steam. Smoke was released through the chimney while the heat boiled the water, which created steam. The steam was then relocated to the cylinders through the steam pipes, where they created the power to move the wheels of the train. It did take some time to build up enough steam to start move the train. However when enough steam was built up, the conductors of the train would blow the whistle to signal being ready to leave the station. In 1827, the Baltimore and Ohio railway was ... The fall aesthetic is extremely evident on this piece of pottery. The coloring of the pottery is mostly oranges, browns, and dark greens. There are also a few bright colors like blue and pink, but those are subdued by the other colors. The interior design use of chrysanthemums is pivotal in the fall aesthetic. Some believed that a strong federal government should wield most of the governing powers, but there was another group that opposed a strong federal government. This group, known as the Republicans, believed that the majority of governing powers should reside in state legislatures. Republicans felt that the powers of the federal government should be limited, and the Republicans believed that the Constitution supported this idea. The Republicans argued against the formation of a national bank. During the debate over the national bank, Thomas Jefferson argued that [t]he incorporation of a bank, and the powers assumed by this bill, have not, in my opinion, been delegated to the United States, by the Constitution (Debate on p. 1). Many times it is said that your eyes are the windows to your soul, in Fish Story the fish s eyes acted as a symbolic window into the narrator s soul. Being a boy of 10 years old he is suspended between the world of childhood innocence and raw uncensored adulthood. From early on the boy connects with the fish as he is describing the fish s eyes, The fish, in turn, studied me with its round, obsidian eyes, which had a gold lining to their perimeter, like pyrite (p. 1, par. 5, Bass, 2009). The gasps were coming slower and I felt that perhaps a fire was going out in the fish s eyes (p. 3, par. 22, Bass, 2009). Just as the water is turned off by Jack s dad, the narrator s innocence starts a downward spiral. He no longer has that lifeline to the fish. He starts seeing changes in the fish s appearance Immediately, or so it seemed to me, a fine wrinkling appeared on the previously taut gunmetal skin of the fish a desiccation, like watching a time lapse motion picture of a man s or woman s skin wrinkling as he or she ages, regardless of the man s or woman s wishes to the contrary (p. 3, par. 24, Bass, 2009). Yet when combined with an audience, the work became doubly fulfilling. In some ways, it boosted her self esteem and drove her to become the best version of herself. She noticed that when her daily life was made transparent, her words and actions became happier, more altruistic, and more intellectually interesting. She had been told that this would be a positive effect of going transparent, but she had not anticipated other changes. She had not anticipated that being transparent would actually redirect some of her less than perfect habits. The camera s influence caused her to think more carefully about the way she presented herself. When she thought of her viewers seeing her choices, she felt pressured to make healthy choices. Thus, she abstained from sugary foods, and consumed socially acceptable levels of alcohol. When she thought of the camera catching her consuming aspirin, she was ashamed of the image that this might project and rerouted her behavior. Thus, she entered a life where she abstained from the parts of her life that she found imperfect. Being watched was a way to curb bad behavior. • 19. Romanticism As A Source Of Spirituality Classification Romanticism is a time period in history based on a cultural revolution. It is defined differently based on geographical location, however it overall incorporates the same common principles: (1) imagination, (2) individuality, (3) nature as a source of spirituality, (4) looking to the past for wisdom, and (5) seeing the common man as a hero. These common principles are what inspired writers and artists of the time to fabricate ideas. This is how the period got named romanticism for the term romantic, [was] long synonymous with false, fictitious and unnatural (Courthion, 1961, p. 7). Defining the movement is what overtime pulled the art community away from the previous baroque era. By the late 1700s romance thus had come to refer broadly to any work that could be distinguished from works principally realistic in form and subject matter (Davey, 2006). Against the common misconception, the Romantic Movement was not considered to be strongly influenced by love. Instead the historically been associated with narratives of adventure, romance, and myth as opposed to realistic stories or portrayals of history, politics, or everyday life (Romanticism, 2014). • 22. America, The Land Of Opportunity Henry Schineller Carlucci American Literature 21 May, 2016 Rough Draft America, the land of opportunity. A majestic land where barriers are broken and dreams are made into reality. A land where anything is possible with a little hard work and determination. One may ask what makes a place this possible. The answer to that question is the people. Americans have a certain way about them that makes them different from any other people on earth. All Americans are heroes in some way, but a select few stand out in history as the most influential. One such individual is Jackie Robinson. Robinson redefined racial stereotypes by becoming the first African American baseball player to play in the Major League. Through his courage, determination, and perseverance, his legacy still continues to this date. One could argue numerous reasons that constitute Jackie Robinson as an American hero, but four stand out among the rest. Those reasons being that he fought for what he believed was right, overcame adversity, conquered many athletic feats, and had a lasting legacy. For these reasons Jackie Robinson truly embodies an American hero. The definition of a hero is: a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities (Merriam Webster). An American hero is someone who, yes follows this definition, but completes it in a way that furthers America as a nation. Van der Kolk (1987) notes that human responses to trauma are relatively constant across various types of traumatic stimuli, where individuals have poor tolerance to arousal stimuli and may experience social and emotional withdrawal. These changes in the body s arousal and perception prevent the continuance of normal life, and require help. Traumatic events also produce profound and lasting changes in physiological arousal, emotion, cognition, and memory. Moreover, traumatic events may result in the severance of these normally integrated functions from one another. Traumatized individuals may also suffer from the memories of the tragic or horrifying experiences they have undergone. Frequently, as a result of these many symptoms, it becomes inevitable for the individual to develop certain complications associated with trauma related disorders, such as posttraumatic stress disorder. Herman (1992) categorizes the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder into three major categories: hyperarousal, intrusion, and constriction. • 24. The Portrayal Of Children s Books Introduction Children are highly acquiescent, and as such the media they consume is highly important in their socialization. Taking into consideration the ubiquity of media and the degree to which it is entwined in the lives of children, it is important that we be concerned with the themes presented in children s media including books. As noted by Taylor (2003), Children s books are an important cultural mechanism for teaching children gender roles. If children are exposed to stereotypical images in children s books, they may adopt these as normative, and may adjust their actions accordingly (Paynter, 2011). Given this, it is important to examine the representation(s) of gender in children s books. In this paper I will discuss the depiction of gender in children s books, focusing particularly on the manner in which boys and girls are portrayed in children s literature. In my discussion, I will draw on Paul Kramer s children s book Maggie Goes on a Diet to illustrate problematic themes that are prevalent in the current children s literature. Literature Review As social learning theory and gender schema theory explain, children exposed to gender role stereotyping in the media, including children s literature, may internalize these gender stereotypes (Bandura, 1971). According to gender schema theory, gendered characteristics are conserved and transmitted to other members of a culture via schemata (Bem, 1993). There have been events that have occurred in history that have aided to the discussion, whether it is positive or negative. Events that have stood out from the crowd include segregated schools that wanted nothing to do with a race outside their own and schools that were eventually integrated but not taught fairly to those amongst them. These events shaped the future for our school systems today and as educators, it is our job to learn from them ourselves as well as educate students in regards to this sensitive, very real manner. Cultural diversity covers an array of areas. Culture in itself is, that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, arts, morals, laws, customs, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by a human as a member of society, (UNESCO, n.d.). Different senses of culture are in multitude when one takes a look at society as a whole. No two types of individuals, from different cultural backgrounds, are the same on many different levels of living much less in school learning. This area of importance begins in the classroom. For our students, cultural diversity is seen through the lens of society, which is not always clear. The discussion will discuss the three ways in which the Federal Government became involved in aviation development and cite an example in each of those cases. The resulting effect on aviation development of such involvement will also be explored. Body In examining the history of aviation in the U.S. and the development of the airlines, it is clear that the Federal Government played a vital role in the development of both. Historical records clearly show that this involvement by the Federal Government was critical in getting them established and in helping to develop them into the globally dominant enterprises they are today. Furthermore, it can be easily argued that U.S. aviation as a whole, and the airlines in particular, would not be where they are today without this direct involvement by the Federal Government and some of the very specific actions that it has taken to keep them relevant and competitive during the most dire of times. The Federal Government ensured that U.S. aviation and its airlines would develop and achieve a worldwide leadership role by becoming involved in three major ways: through funding, legislation, and policy setting. However, teens can make decisions that last a lifetime, for example, tattoos. Tattoos are fairly controversial at younger ages, but are growing more and more popular amongst adolescents with the introduction and glorification of such body art by varying media, such as celebrities. • 31. Edgar Allan Poe Fairyland Many of Edgar Allan Poe s works have made impacts upon how the world is viewed. Poe s works create a more morbid outlook as opposed to that of intrigue and wonder. Poe s poem titled Fairyland captures his amazing talents of perception with ease. As Poe explains his surroundings, one can t help but feel a sense of becoming dwarfed by the surroundings. His explanation of the outlook he is experiencing consists of his description of the ominous overcast of moonlight that falls upon him and his surroundings. Poe s mastery of his imagery creates a tone of unknowingness and morbidity that creates a theme of longingness for meaning and explanation of the world. Poe s poem titled Fairyland effortlessly captures Poe s stance in the Romantic era of literature. Poe explains in his poem that there are forms unable to be seen and creates a sense of the night passing ever so slowly as the moon travels across the sky. The ... It seems that Poe continues his typical poem setup throughout Fairyland, but in a much more intense manner. Poe places the reader in an environment that can be analogous to that of lacking enlightenment and purpose. The reader seems to be seeing the landscape as it is with the time passing slowly, with no reason for existence. • 32. West Nile Fever Case Study West Nile fever is caused by the West Nile Virus. Describe the emergence of novel disease in the Western hemisphere. Provide some examples of sources on infection for novel disease, including the mode of transmission for WNV. Why is this a concern? West Nile Virus (WNV) has caused a global pathogen with a significant morbidity and mortality. It was first discovered in the West Nile District of Uganda in 1937 (Roehrig, 2013). It was first seen in the United States in 1999 and has been estimated to cause more than 3 million infections, resulting in over 780,000 illnesses, 38,000 clinically confirmed cases, and 1,500 deaths between 1999 and 2014 (Suthar Pulendran, 2014, p. 70). The transmission cycle of WNV is between mosquitoes and birds. Some infected birds can develop high levels of the virus in its bloodstream and mosquitoes can become infected after biting the infected birds. The infected mosquitoes can pass the virus to more birds after biting them. The infected mosquitoes can transfer the virus when it bit other mammals and people. Fortunately, people infected with the virus will not be able to pass the virus to other people because humans do not develop a high level of virus in their bloodstream. • 34. How To Write A Reflective Practitioner Essay Teaching Statement When I think about teaching I think about my coaching philosophy, which has developed from 15 years of experience. A coach has tremendous influence on the physical and psychological development of their athletes young and old. The primary responsibility of the coach is to enable their athlete to attain levels of performance not otherwise achievable: therefore, coaches need to develop skills to motivate athletes and establish the right conditions for learning. Being an effective coach is more than understanding the technical knowledge of sport, but also knowing how to build trusting kinesthetic relationships. My role as a coach is to connect with, engage, excite, and empower athletes, regardless of their athletic ability, and I try to embody this in my teaching. Schön, in The Reflective Practitioner, argues that professional education should be centered on enhancing the practitioner s ability for reflection in action . This approach not only aims to prepare students to handle the complex and unpredictable problems of actual practice with confidence, skill and care, but also directly challenges technical rationality , a positivist epistemology of practice. The Hidden Horrors Of Mass Produced Food Sarah Berkowsky Ms. McGoldrick English 2A 5/23/17 The Hidden Horrors of Mass Produced Food The way we eat has changed more in the last fifty years than in the past ten thousand. (Food, Inc.) Farming first emerged as a large scale industry during the Industrial Revolution. The transition from small, local farms to larger, corporate owned businesses began when machines were more readily available and much more efficient. However, another factor in the creation of the current industrial food system, including factory farming, is the advent of fast food, beginning in the 1930s. Food had to be uniform and cheap for both the company and the consumers (Food, Inc.). Another contributing factor is increased demand for animal products, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Factory farming isn t just harming the environment, it is also extremely cruel to the animals on these farms. The American poultry industry kills approximately 8.6 million chickens for meat every year, and another 300 million hens produce eggs (A Closer), and the treatment of these chickens is anything but humane. A recent video published by The Huffington Post, Tyson: Exposed, shows the cruel treatment of chickens at several Tyson Foods chicken breeding facilities. The video is incredibly graphic, showing workers standing on birds heads to crush their skulls, kicking and beating birds, all while admitting that what they re doing cannot be exposed (Hanson). Tyson Foods is the largest chicken producer in the country, accounting for twenty one percent of all sales (Tyson Foods, Tyson Fact Book http://ir.tyson.com/investor relations/investor overview/tyson factbook/default.aspx). Animal welfare has clearly taken a backseat to corporate profits: Tyson earned nearly $1.4 billion in the first nine months of fiscal 2016 (Tyson Foods, Third Quarter Results). But animal cruelty isn t just confined to the breeding facilities. A report from Canada, which has some of the worst transport standards for chickens in the world, shows that it is common to find birds dead on arrival to the slaughterhouse (Brown 1). • 36. Determinism And Free Will In Harry Potter And The Prisoner... The controversy of whether the doctrine of determinism or free will guides us throughout our life is constantly debated. Is there a superior being that determines everything that occurs, or are humans free to do whatever they choose? In stories, the collaboration of fate and free will propels the actions of characters throughout the plot. In J.K. Rowling s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, there is a certain fate ordained, but there is free will that brings the characters to their fates. On the contrary, the chorus of Euripides Medea states the gods find a way, against all expectation, to do what they want...And that is exactly how this case turned out (Euripides 1467 1469), suggesting that whatever Medea does is constrained the the fate determined by the gods. That she enacts the judgement of the gods is what she considers the bindings of fate, but under the lens of Harry Potter, Rowling would treat this as free will that endows fate. The notion that there is a superior force that decides fate is present in the novel and the play, although the extent of this power contrasts. Dumbledore acts as a semi god figure in Harry Potter, determining the fates of Buckbeak and Sirius Black by pushing Hermione and Harry to use the Time Turner. Had he not opened up this possibility to them, the salvation of the doomed characters would not have been possible. • 39. Tonal Sensitivity It doesn t take a musical genius with perfect pitch to tell when a piano is in tune. When your piano is adjusted properly, music sounds correct to our ears. When it isn t, your home piano sounds more like what you d expect to hear in a saloon during a gunfight at the OK Corral. The reason for this is the result of two things: Small variations in the sound waves created by the piano that compound over time Cultural expectations with regards to music To understand these ideas, you first have to have a basic understanding of how sound is created. Sound Waves and Hertz A sound wave is defined as a disturbance through a medium in the case of your piano, the vibrating strings cause a disturbance in the air around you. Your ears detect this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As these changes impact all of the strings on your piano, the notes begin to sound unrelated to each other. A change of even a few Hz can cause your ear to notice and the result is rarely pleasing to hear. Tonal Sensitivity The reason listeners react so strongly to these minor changes is related to the Western style of music. In the simplest terms, our music is built around related notes. These are called scales and modes. A major scale, for example, will often sound happy and bouncy to us. On the other hand, minor scales sound sad or spooky. Scales in our system of music are defined more by the proper difference in pitch between notes than the starting or stopping point of the scale. When those gaps between notes are incorrect, the overall feel of the scale or mode is lost. That s why a poorly tuned piano strikes us immediately as wrong we ve heard so much music that our ears expect a certain result and notice when it is lost. The moral of the story is this: Your piano will almost undoubtedly go out of tune over time, and your ears will certainly notice. Investing in a professional to tune your instrument periodically is the only way to ensure that your playing provides the maximum amount of enjoyment for both you and your ... Blanche Dubois Death Death, Desire, and DuBois Set in 1947 in the French Quarter of New Orleans, A Streetcar Named Desire, written by playwright Tennessee Williams, transpires from the motifs of death and desire. The drama follows the disillusioned, tragically flawed life of Blanche DuBois who seeks refuge with her sister Stella and brutish brother in law Stanley Kowalski after the loss of her family s estate. As the play progresses, Williams reveals the many layers of Blanche s unfortunate past and the interpretation behind her escalating hysteria and delusional fate prompted by her inability to confront reality. Williams s creation of death and desire as two perpetual themes throughout the play grow increasingly dependent upon each other.
