2. Reflection on Reading
February 11, 2011
Looking Back In Order to Move Forward
As a future elementary school teacher, I have always thought the task of teaching kids could be a
rewarding and gratifying experience. However, I recently realized that in order to obtain these
rewarding experiences the teacher and students must work hard and with determination. Learning to
read can be a very daunting task for a youngster. Therefore, as a teacher, it is your job to facilitate
positive reading strategies from the start. Looking back at my experiences as an early reader, I can
gain some insight as to what might help or hinder my future students.
I believe that one of the most important things you can do for your child is ... Show more content on

I feel learning the phonics of letters through the rhythms of music truly helped me as I began to sit
down with my first readers.
As I began applying what I was learning in the songs to some basic basal readers like Dick and Jane I
was able to find patterns between the phonics in the songs and the words on the page. We had books
that were themed each week with certain phonic sounds. The sound was then repeated throughout the
book but in different words. We were able to take these books home and practice with our parents. I
think that practice and repetition are key in continuing to recognize letters with their phonic sounds. I
feel these books served the purpose of achieving good reading skills for me as a child, and continue to
be helpful to children today as they learn to read.
There are two other techniques that my teacher used to help teach us how to read. One I consider to be
a good strategy and the other I am not too fond of. The first approach was using a tape recorder and
head sets. We would sit down with a book and follow along with our finger as a voice was reading the
book to us in our ear. I think this particular approach works because it releases the anxiety and stress
of having to pick apart the words on a page in order to learn them. By following along they are able to
develop listening skills and hear the

Through the Career Cruising, the three careers that I explored are Oceanographer, Commercial Diver,
and Environmental Engineer. In order to first understand these careers, I must understand my learning
styles and how it fits into the careers. According to the learning styles test, I received a 48.57% for
auditory, and a 62.86% for both kinesthetic and visual. According to these results it means that I am
primarily a hands on learner as well as visual learner; this means I am a good fit for jobs that require
observation as well as labor, and a poor fit for jobs that require listening. Because of these results it
means I am a good fit for oceanography and commercial diving. Oceanography requires mainly

Environmental engineers focus on cleaning and protecting healthy air, soil, and water. They monitor
the quality of theses aspects to ensure healthiness in the environment. Many engineers take part in
projects around the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of water plants that filter sewage.
Some deal with garbage disposal such as landfills, and some can be assigned with managing toxic or
radioactive materials. They also evaluate government or private projects on how they will affect the
surrounding environment, and they advise companies of existing policies that may interfere with the
project development. Environmental engineers also work in flooded areas, erosion control, and
recycling. The minimum degree required is a bachelor s in environmental science or similar. However,
it is generally recommended to obtain a master s. At the entry level, these engineers start out with an
annual salary of $61,200. The median salary is $84,610, and the experienced salary is $100,470. By
2024, the career is expected to increase by 12%. Environmental engineers are employed by the

6. Costing and Pricing Decisions
Running head: COSTING AND PRICING DECISIONS
Costing and Pricing Decisions
Cost Allocations
Cost allocation is the process of assigning the indirect costs of producing a product. These indirect
costs may be shared by multiple products. This is where cost allocation comes into play. Indirect costs
can be allocated to products, services and departments. Cost allocation allows a company to calculate
fully cost of their products. This provides them the ability to price products accurately. Three common
costs that need to be considered when allocating costs include joint costs, sunk costs and opportunity
costs (Jiambalvo, 2007).
Joint Costs When at least two products come out of a common input they are considered joint
products. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This helps to avoid making decisions based on sunk costs.
A third way to avoid the sunk cost effect that Roberto, 2009 writes about is to take a look at the
assumptions being made and discover is they are reality. There are assumptions being made about the
company s ability to recover lost project. Taking a look at these assumptions and determining if they
are actually accurate assumptions or just optimism about something that is not possible. The last way
Roberto, 2009 writes about to avoid making decisions based on sunk costs is to determine the
opportunity costs of continuing with the project instead of ending it. Making decisions based on sunk
costs can lead a company to making poor financial decisions and in turn have an effect on being able
to price their future products appropriately.
Opportunity Costs
An opportunity cost is a cost that is caused by making one choice over another. An example of this
would be if you purchased season tickets to the Ravens with your tax return instead of paying your
credit card off with the money. The interest that you continue to pay on your credit card as a result of
not paying it off with your tax return would be considered the opportunity cost (Jiambalvo, 2007).

WHAT NASA IS SAYING ABOUT THIS
NASA usually does not like talking about UFO sightings, but they did talk a little about this latest
claim. However, NASA is not quite sold on the fact that these are indeed UFO sightings. The members
of NASA state that images like this are most likely hot spots. Hot spots make it look like something is
there, but in actuality it is just emanating extreme brightness. NASA also stated how in the past they
have been accused of covering up UFO sightings, and that people won t accept their explanations.

8. Devil in a Blue Dress Film vs. Book
When an individual reads a book and then sees the movie that is based on the book, there is bound to
be many differences between the two. Sometimes there are elements that are present in the book that
have a tendency to get lost in the production and directing of a movie. At other times, the movie adds
elements that are not originally in the book. In Walter Mosley s book, Devil in a Blue Dress, and the
movie of the same name share some similar literary elements. However, there are several vital
situations and parts of the book s story that are not present in the film. Hence, the movie downplays a
lot of the foul language as well as the racial slurs that were used in the era the book was set in. With a

For instance, in the book Joppy knew Albright; Albright knew Todd Carter; Todd Carter knew Richard
McGee as well as Matthew Terrell whereas in the movie every character denied knowing each other
except Albright and Joppy. Another noticeable difference is that in the book Frank Green, Daphne s
brother ends up murdered and in the movie he lives and they both end up moving. The third noticeable
difference is a character name change from the book to the movie; Matthew Teran in the book is
Matthew Terrell in the movie and he ends up being murdered in the book whereas at the end of the
movie he s running for mayor. A fourth noticeable difference is the pier scene. In the book Albright
and Easy meet at the Santa Monica pier and in the movie it is the Malibu pier. And the last most
noticeable difference between the book and the movie is that Mouse knows Daphne Monet or shall we
call her by her real name Ruby Hanks; however, in the movie the audience never finds that out. In the
movie the only true thing you get to know about Daphne is that she is both black and white. Therefore,
due to the many differences between the book and the movie it is confusing to the audience since it is
almost like dealing with two different stories because of the plot inconsistencies. Even though, you

11. Features Of A Relational Database
Features of a relational database
Primary keys:
The main feature of a relation database would be the primary key. It is a unique identifier set to each
and every record that travels across different tables in relationships. An example of a primary key is a
Social Security number. The primary keys job is to make each record unique and it lets data to be kept
in more than one table. Each table within a relational database will have a field for the primary key.
Foreign keys:
A foreign key is a column in a database that links data between tables by cross referencing because it
references primary keys from other tables. For example if there are two tables, customer and order

Validation rules
Validation within a database is used to make sure the data entered into the database is sensible and
makes sense, also to avoid any typing errors. You make a rule which only allows certain things to be
typed into the database e.g. only 11 numbers for a mobile phone number so that you don t accidently
type the wrong amount of digits. It will come up as an error if you try and then that is when you notice
your mistake. Benefits
Having a relational database will greatly reduce the data redundancy because it will get rid of the
repeated data within a database. This is done by going through the normalisation process and therefore
since there is less data in the database it is much faster access, searching data, updating data, sorting
and reporting.
Stages of normalisation
The steps of normalisation will be fully explained in the following steps: Firstly you need to turn this
into a unormalised table by:
Create column headings for the table for each data item on the report and ignore any calculated

12. Through The Tunnel Symbolism
In Through the Tunnel, the author, Doris Lessing, writes about a vacation of a widow and her son
named Jerry. Lessing turns Jerry s and his mother s relaxing vacation into a serious one with the tools
of symbolism to unveil the hidden message of the rocky bay and the tunnel, vivid imagery of the
tunnel, as well as similes and personification regarding Jerry s attitude towards the adventure;
moreover, the author creates an overall tone of determination and wonder to help construct the well
known theme of never giving up.
It is safe to assume the rocky bay and the tunnel both symbolize very important aspects in this short
story. The rocky bay could be said to symbolize a turning point in Jerry s life. In the first paragraph,
Jerry looked down at a wild and rocky bay, and then over the crowded beach he knew ... Show more

After Jerry had watched the older boys go through the tunnel and leave the bay, he was left alone
again. He then dived back in among the fanged and angry boulders, (3). This personification
emphasizes a negative connotation that shows how frustrated Jerry is at this point in his adventure. He
felt like he boys were leaving to get away from him, (3), which only further supports the notion that he
feels alone and has no clue what to do. However, after he decides to get goggles, he ran right back and
dived into the bay once more. While he was negative towards the whole ordeal before, the following
simile reveals a different tone: Now, he could see. It was as if he had eyes of a different kind, fish eyes
that showed everything clear and delicate and wavering in the bright water, (3). The fact that he is now
describing things as clear and delicate shows a more positive connotation which can suggest that Jerry
was not as frustrated after that. He felt as if he got some of his composure and control back and is
ready to continue on his

After the first few struggling settlements in the New World progressed, more and more colonies
sprung from the untested North American soil. Eventually, there were three main categories to the
European colonies. They were each unique, although one certain class stood in stark contrast to the
other two. This group, the Middle colonies, was a halfway point between the New England and
Southern colonies and not just geographically. The Middle colonies extracted parts of its neighbors,
like farming habits and spiritual sects, but the middle group managed to retain its own flavor. Perhaps
one of the most important circumstances of the New World was the varying climate. The North

A significant factor of any civilization, be it vast as the Roman Empire or pitifully miniscule, is
spirituality. Religion was (and even remains to be) a big part of North America. New England was
strictly Puritan. English Puritans sought out haven in the New World, far away from persecution in the
mother country. The Southern colonies consisted mostly of Anglicans, though some may speculate
that the Southerners were more concerned with worshipping wealth. The Middle colonies were quite
different in that there was no single dominant religion. Pennsylvania, which contained the largest city
in all the thirteen colonies, was well known for its many Quaker residents. However, there was also a
fair share of Jews, Catholics, and other faiths, as well as the standard Puritans and Anglicans. Overall,
the most defining factor of the Middle colonies was its ethnic diversity. The backgrounds of its
inhabitants included (but was not limited to) German, Dutch, Scotch Irish, English, French, Welsh,
Swedish, Polish, and Finnish. New England could not compete, for its population was almost entirely
English, save for the scattered Dutch remnants of New Amsterdam and the Native Americans, of
course. The South was biracial, which meant that one was black, white, or an exceedingly rare mixture
of the two. The Middle colonies had slaves, though its percentage of slaves in the population was

14. The Heart Lab Report
In this lab, the students observed the rate and rhythm and how it fluctuates when an individual is
relaxed, in a seated position, and after exercising. The Heart is a hollow muscular organ that is cone
shaped and it is located in the mediastinum in between the lungs (The Heart, Slide 3 2016). The heart
is separated into two main divisions, the pulmonary circuit and the systemic circuit. The pulmonary
circuit helps carry blood to the lungs from the heart for gas exchange and it is located in the right side
of the heart. In the pulmonary circuit the heart fills with blood in the right atrium then it passes
through the right atrioventricular valve which then leads to the right ventricle. Once it is in the right
ventricle, the right ventricle contracts which opens the pulmonary valves. After this blood flows from
the pulmonary valve to the pulmonary trunk which then distributes it into the right and left pulmonary
arteries that supply the lungs where it deposits oxygenated blood. ... Show more content on

15. The Link Between Anxiety And Depression
Research
Topic: Anxiety and depression are often linked, experts say, as dealing with long term anxiety can lead
to depression, or one may feel anxious about their battle with depression.
In order to talk about the link between Anxiety and Depression, there is a word that must be discussed:
comorbidity. According one paper, Comorbidity may imply either the co occurrence of two or more
disorders in an individual at a given time, or the manifestation of multiple disorders during the lifetime
of the individual. (Seligman and Ollendick, pg. 125) Two disorders may be comorbid when there is
symptom overlap; when one underlying construct is split into two separate disorders ; when disorders
share risks, or when one disorder causes or increases the risk of developing the second disorder. (S and
o, pg. 125) People with comorbid disorders are, typically more severely impaired than children with
either disorder alone. (1) However, there has only been a limited amount of research done on
individuals with comorbid disorders, as comorbidity often serves to exclude people from entry. This
paper with specifically discuss and expand upon the comorbidity between anxiety and depression.
Anxiety and depression are highly comorbid disorders. In a study done about the relationship between
anxiety and depression, researchers found a group of 106 children who struggled with DSM III
diagnosed anxiety disorder. Of those 106 children, 28% were found to have a comorbid depressive
disorder.

Introduction In 2006, the United Nations Children s Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health
Organization (WHO) 1 published the report, Pneumonia: The forgotten killer of children which
identified pneumonia as one of the world s leading causes of childhood mortality accounting for one
in five under five deaths. The fourth Millennium Development Goal (MDG) from the 2000 summit is
to reduce under five mortality rate by two thirds by 20151. With its significant contribution to under
five mortality, reduction of the childhood pneumonia mortality is essential to achieving this goal. Over
the last two decades there has been significant progress in reduction of childhood pneumonia deaths
with 58% less deaths occurring globally in 20132. However, pneumonia still accounts for about 19%
of childhood under five deaths and contributes significantly to morbidity and disability among
children globally. Majority of these pneumonia related deaths occur in developing countries and are
concentrated in a few countries1,2. In 2013, over half of the under five pneumonia deaths occurred in
10 countries located in sub Saharan Africa, South Asia and South east Asia1,2. Successful
interventions for the reduction in childhood pneumonia mortality include: protecting child health by
ensuring adequate nutrition and hygiene, prevention of pneumonia by immunization against causative
pathogens, reducing indoor air pollution and optimizing access to prompt treatment of pneumonia1 3.

17. Star Of David And The Menorah s Symbols
It seems that the earliest use of the symbol was in the form of a hexagram and used in many cultures
for decorative purposes that continued through the Middle Ages. Around the 17th century, the star was
found in Synagogue architecture in the Middle East, North Africa and Europe and was used by
Christians, Hindus, and Muslims at some point in time. The symbol gained more prominence when it
was chosen to appear on the flag at the First Zionist Congress in 1897. When the Zionists searched for
a symbol of their movement, they picked both the Star of David and the menorah, one for their flag,

drum changed as saxophone changed rhythm and the tempo. The bass guitar helped drum to follow
saxophone s rhythm and tempo. The saxophone style was kind of similar with the how Louis
Armstrong was playing a solo. There were two guitars, but saxophone dominated other instruments
and it was difficult to hear other instruments. The fifth song was hand drummer used sand rattler
instead of hand drum. The drum solo in this song was very powerful and brought the exhilaration of
this concert to the climax. The change of unpredictable rhythm and tempo made audience excited.
Many audiences were clapping with rhythm. The sixth song was in blues style. The Name of the Song
was, I ll see you in my dreams . Just bass guitar, saxophone, drum, and keyboard were playing. It was
short piece song but just enough time to feel blues. This piece was one of few slow tempo songs in
this concert. The mix of bass guitar, saxophone, drum, and keyboard articulated

19. Jules Winnfield In Pulp Fiction
We all wish we were those fan favorites in movies, video games, and books but what if we in a way
are them? Just because we may not come from the same place, look alike, or even think the same we
can still connect with these characters. We can connect through the character traits we share between
each other, because any good character has to have some connection with us in order for us to like
them. The three fictional characters that most represent my personality are Joel for his bravery and
loyalty, Gohan for his love of nature and silence, and Jules Winnfield for his visionary and
philosophical ideas.
In a world where infected run the world there is few things one can have in common with another but

In the movie Pulp Fiction, we get an example of his visionary characteristic when he and his partner is
shot at point blank rage but all the bullets miss him. Shortly after the incident he starts preaching to his
partner how all of this was divine intervention and starts questioning whether or not if what he is
doing is right. The movie does not show what happens to Jules after that incident, but we do think that
he decided to retire from his gangster job and walk the Earth. Not only in that scene, but in the last
scene where we see Jules he conversates with his partner very much about why he believes there was
a reason God stopped the bullets and allowed him to keep living. This attribute helps the character
because it helps guide him through his life. At first, he always believe saying a religious quote from
the bible before shooting a man down was something cool but that incident started making him think.
It made him think about the meaning of his quote and it ultimately helps him decide to save a life
rather than just killing them. It enables him to break free from a clouded mind and take a second to
think of the meaning of his life. I have always believed that there was more of a meaning to our lives
than just what we live. Although I am not religious as Jules Winnfield, I still believe that there are
those moments in life that is more than a simple coincidence. Growing up I started looking into
astronomy and what is out there in space but at the same time I was looking into information about
chakras and our mind and how everything is connected. It all made me wonder if there is a greater
purpose for me to fulfill and I truly believe there is just like Jules. There is a reason more important
than money and power that we just can t understand yet

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the limitations of equipment that is used to detect
deception and examine whether the forensic discipline aligns with The Daubert Standard of
Admissibility. In regards to the types of equipment used to detect deception, the most common piece
of equipment is the polygraph. However, as with every piece of equipment, it comes with flaws and
deficiencies. In regards to the deception detection equipment including the polygraph, various
limitations exist that include the lack of validity of the results gathered and the uncertainty associated

For example, when detection methods are used for investing certain crimes, it is obvious that with the
use of detection deception equipment that uncertainty will arise. (Jalab, Shivakumara, Sadeghi,
AbdulWahab, Uliyan, 2016) In a case of examining to detect whether any species within an
organization are being deceptive, the equipment might fail to provide precise knowledge of any
criminal events or situations that may or may not occurred. The considerations about the capabilities
of the polygraph tests to procure authentic and precise responses can create uncertainty. Such
occurrences of uncertainty can impair the definitiveness among tests such as these. Legitimacy is also
jeopardized when the tests are used to control future examinations as they incorporate the equipment
used for detecting deception is the issue when the tests effectiveness is in question. Equipment such as
the polygraph fails to validate and authenticate accusations about the person(s) in question. The NRC
governed a research study about the legitimacy of polygraph testing that assists in the knowledge of
being aware of the differences associated with someone who is being dishonest and someone who is
being truthful when placed in various settings. (Jalab, Shivakumara, Sadeghi, AbdulWahab, Uliyan,

21. Legal Advice Regarding Discharge Of Contracts
This assignment will involve giving legal advice regarding discharge of contracts, a term which
indicates a contract has terminated. A contract can end in many ways yet only two will be covered in
this scenario namely performance and breach. Discharge by performance occurs when the parties have
performed all their obligations. The latter may occur when a party fails to perform obligations or fails
to achieve the terms and conditions set out in the contract. Breach can be of two types actual, where
the party has not performed and anticipatory where one party states that performance will not take
place. A breach of contract can also occur due to substantial performance and part performance. The
former taking place when the conditions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order for the breaching party in this case LCL to be liable, it is vital to distinguish whether the
condition is a mere representation or a term. This will depict whether the party is liable. If it s a mere
representation this will generate a claim for misrepresentation rather than a breach of contract. In
Birch v Paramount Estates it was specified that the greater the significance attached, the more likely it
is a term.
The construction work portrays an expressed term of the contract as it was incorporated in the
contract. This constitutes a breach of contract as LCL have failed to accomplish the term outlined in
the contract. Due to this, Mr Jones is entitled to recover damages as he has to arrange another
company to complete the building work. The compensation Mr Jones is entitled to is namely quantum
meruit as some of the terms incorporated in the contract were accomplished. The purpose of this is
that it will put Mr Jones in a position which he would have been in, if the contract had been
performed. This is known as expectation interest . .
As the breach is repudiatory meaning that a term has not been fulfilled, then the non breaching party
in this case Mr Jones can either terminate or affirm the contract. By affirming the contract they will
accept the performance of LCL. In Sumpter v Hedges the builders failed to perform all the obligations
set out in the contract known as part

Why Is Service Excellence Important To Your Organisation?
Netjets is a worldwide network of shared aircraft. This is defined as fractional ownership. Customers
make a large investment in a share of a private jet. In relation to the size of their share, they receive a

Our Town by Thornton Wilder continues to be a timeless theatrical work performed pervasively

encompassing a different phase in a person s life. The play presents the audience with situations
parallel to the ones almost everyone faces during their lifetime. This, in conjunction with breaking the

How successful can the management of fragile environments be, given the constant and increasing
demand for their exploitation?
A fragile environment is an area where the flora and fauna have adapted to a specific climate and
evolved to occupy many different niches due to extremely high competition for resources.
Furthermore due to the constant abiotic conditions, specialisation and symbiotic relationships have
occurred to such a degree that even the slightest ecological or environmental disruption cannot be
accommodated, meaning individual habitats and ecosystems can be easily destroyed. This
combination of specialisation and interdependence increases the overall fragility and vulnerability of

human muscle power of the vehicle operator to disengage the clutch and actuate the gear levers. Thus
the manual transmission requires very little engine power to function, with the main power
consumption due to drag from the gear train being in the lubricating oil of the gearbox. Advantages of
automatic transmission 1. Automatic transmission is very comfortable as the driver need not worry
about the clutch and there is no need to manually change the gears with changing speeds. This adds a
lots of convenience and driving pleasure in city traffic . 2.It requires lesser skills to drive an automatic
transmission car compared to manual transmission car as the gears are changed automatically by the

There is no doubt that Oskar Schindler s actions helped save many Jews during the Holocaust. His
acts of bravery allowed many Jews to survive the Nazi regime and bring forth a new generation of

motives of his actions? What made a German industrialist so brave and devoted to saving the lives of
the persecuted? Did Oskar Schindler see right through the Nazi facade and see the evils and atrocities
it committed? In order for us to truly understand Mr. Schindler s true motives, we have to see his life
through the whole spectrum, from beginning to end. We have to observe Oskar Schindler s
upbringing, his activities before the Holocaust, his actions during the Holocaust, and his place in
history after the Holocaust. Only when we have studied this man s life in it s fullest can we truly come
to some understanding of why he was so motivated to do so much good and help the Jewish people
and also where he found the courage to stand up to the evils of Hitler and the Nazi regime. That is the
purpose of this investigation. However, before we begin to emerge ourselves in the life of Oskar
Schindler we have to begin with the lives of two pivotal figures in Oskar s life, Franziska Luser and

Typically the individual experiences misplaced feelings and attempts to place blame. The third stage
of grief is bargaining in which the individual is able to recognize that the circumstances cannot be
undone, but are still unable to accept what has occurred. The fourth stage of grief is depression where
the individual begins to comprehend the permanence of death and often disconnects in an attempt to
avoid retraumatization. Lastly, the fifth stage of grief is acceptance. It is during this stage that the
individual comes to terms with their loss and resumes stability (Kubler Ross, 1969). While grief and
bereavement are often a very personal, individualized experience it is important to note the influence,
both negative and positive that the family system holds. Familial composition, circumstances and
environment are all factors that possess the potential to influence the course of bereavement.

The Christian faith is a well documented and common religion of the Western civilization. However,

their main source of communication will be crying. At this stage babies have very little understanding
of what is happening to them and they do not know they are people. They will have different crying
sounds and these will depend on what the baby needs for example for hunger, pain, feeling wet, fear
and loneliness. At around 4 6 months old a baby will have developed an awareness of sound in
particularly a person speaking and will turn towards the sound when someone familiar speaks for
example their parents. They will start to mimic sounds and start to babble and laugh. Intellectual
development is rapid and although they may not be able to speak in more than just babble, their
understanding will be greater and they will become much more inquisitive. They will be able to
understand simple instructions such as point to your nose. By a year old, they ll be able to say simple
words like Mama and Dada or words with similar sounds. They may start to develop their own

The horror genre has become a popular genre among the movie industry. It has become a popular
genre since it has been evolving throughout the years it has been around, but one of its major climax
points was when the subgenre of zombies came into the mix. The zombie genre became very popular
in the year 1968 when it was first introduced in George Romero s film Night of the Living Dead.
Night of the Living Dead is one of the most prominent zombie films till this date especially since it
has introduced a new monster into the movie industry that nobody would have expected. Romero s
film intertwines with what Noel Carroll is telling us in his article Why Horror? that it is all about the
monsters that appear in the horror film. Noel Carroll s idea of the monster being the main attraction in
all horror films is somewhat true and it showed it when the audience went to watch the film by George
Romero since he introduced the zombies and it caught the audience curiosity. As soon as he caught the
audiences curiosity with the zombies they would just be focusing on the monster especially trying to
figure out how they came to be and how does one end up destroying them. Andrew Tudor in his article

but his children did not. The father called for his children to come out of the house. The children were
ignorant and were too distracted with their games and toys. The father had to devise a quick plan to
save his distracted children from the flames. The father was already aware of what the

38. Analysis Of Hurricane Irma
The service I voluntarily participated in was helping victims of hurricane Irma clean up debris and cut
down trees in Key West, Florida. We were divided up into three large groups. A local church (St. Peter
Catholic Church), a water revised (John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park), and a museum (Crane
Point Museum Nature Center) were the three destinations for our cleanup crews. The team I was
placed in went to help the St. Peter Catholic church. This multicultural church is ran by an Haitian
American Priest that has been a pastor for twenty five years of his life. During the service we cut
down trees, stacked and removed debris. After about an hour and thirty minutes of this labor we
helped replenish the handmade tomatoes garden built ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to The Christian Vision of Humanity, real community is based on the sharing of self
transcendence. Koltko defined self transcendence being seeks to further a cause beyond the self and to
experience a communion beyond the boundaries of the self through peak experience. The students
along with myself who took the time out of a college students busy life to give back and do something
for others demonstrated Koltko definition of self transcendence. We made the choice to wake up on a
Saturday morning to go and give back to those uncapable of doing for themselves. Every one of us
that Saturday morning reach the final good or responsibility of each and every individual human
person because of the reliance of having a choice (Sachs). Vice as described in Sachs book, moral
depravity or corruption. In this service, hearing Maria s story saddens me and hurt me to see how the
bank works. The world we live in is degrading as a society. Maria was insisting on paying us the little
she had for or service which we kindly declined just because we were the only thing avoiding her
from losing her property. Self determination s capacity and responsibility is our human freedom. Just
seeing the reactions of the folks, we helped shaped my perspective on this idea of freedom. It made
me want to commit to being oneself and become somebody rather than

39. Theme Of Decline Of The West
The Decline of the West
The short story The Decline of the West written by Hanif Kureishi and published in 2010 deals with
heavy themes such as materialism, bad parenting and focuses on the dysfunctional families that can be
found in our modern society as a consequence of materialism.
In the short story we are introduced to the father Mike who has lost his job in corporate finance and is
on his way home to tell his family. The reveal of the bad news to his dysfunctional and materialistic
family is constantly being put off by his family s constant demand of new and better things such as
guitars or televisions.
This constant demand is one of the major themes in the short story and is shown to be the root of all
the problems in Mike s family. At the far end of the garden was a shed he d built for the boys to play
music in... The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You ve spoiled and neglected him, you ridiculous, foolish man. And now you expect him to obey you!
(p. 4, line 134 135) The wife, Imogen, knows that you do not earn a child s respect or love by buying
things as an excuse for not being there, a vital point that has been completely overlooked by Mike. But
even the mother who is the family member most outraged by this incident, is not free from the grasp
of capitalism and materialism. After reprimanding Mike she goes on to say that he owes his youngest
son a guitar and other musical instruments. So even with a violent father attacking his own son, the
only thing on the family s mind is things, things and more things. Capitalism has been around for a
very long time and with it comes a burning desire for economic and materialistic improvement that
overshadows everything ells. This is the decline the West is faced with. We become so obsessed with
materialistic accretion that we forget all the things that might actually mean a lot to us, such as our
family or our own

40. How Did The Assassination Cause Ww1
The assassination and the ultimatum both played a significant role in the outbreak of the war. They
caused a chain reaction of events, which ended up eventually causing World War I. On July 23, 1914,
nearly one month after the assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Austria Hungary
issued an ultimatum to Serbia. Serbia accepted all terms of the ultimatum except for one;
consequently, on July 28, 1914, Austria Hungary declared war on Serbia, beginning the First World
War. France and England created an alliance because they both feared Germany s naval strength and
supremacy. Despite claiming it was defensive in nature, it spread east and eventually, other countries
were involved. Since Austria Hungary and Germany were in dispute over the assassination, they
became involved too. Therefore, alliance systems played a significant role in the outbreak of the war.

The assassination of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand played a key role in causing the war due to
those involved. The archduke was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist named Gavrilo Princip on June
28, 1914. This assassination quickly set off a chain reaction of events culminating in the outbreak of
World War I. After taking action against Serbia, Austria Hungary gained German support, and from
there, the first alliance began. Within a week, major European powers like Russia, France, and Great
Britain became involved, and more alliances were formed. Germany, Italy, and Austria Hungary were
the members of the Triple Alliance, while Great Britain, France, and Russia were the members of the
Triple Entente. If a country in one of these alliances declared war, the conflict would quickly escalate
due to all of the countries that would essentially need to become

41. The Idea Of Obesity And Health
Vegetarianism In 2016, the idea of obesity and health is still a topic that is discussed universally.
Through 2015 and 2016, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes have been silent killers, and still easily
preventable ones. According to the Center for Disease Control, heart disease has killed 611,105 people
in 2013; whereas diabetes has killed 75,578 (Death and Morality, CDC). A study at the John Hopkins
School of Medicine says that, Cardiovascular disease continues to be the leading cause of death in the
US. About 1,400,000 people die from cardiovascular disease annually. The American Heart
Association estimates that 2,600 Americans die of cardiovascular disease every day (Cardiovascular
Disease Research, John Hopkins Medicine). The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This could be explained by the level of cholesterol in red meat, which can clog essential arteries and
cause heart complications. This idea is also supported by a study done by the American Heart
Association, which claims that processed meat showed a higher correlation to Coronary Heart
Disease: Conversely, processed meat intake was associated with 42% higher risk of CHD (n=5;
relative risk per 50 g serving per day=1.42; 95% confidence interval, 1.07 to 1.89; P=0.04) ( Red and
Processed Meat Consumption ). This statistic shows us that the risk increased by 1.42 percent per each
50 grams of meat that was taken in. Despite some studies stating that protein filled diets were not
connected with Coronary heart Disease, we can still connect eating meat to heart disease in general,
which helps us conclude that a vegetarian diet will decrease the risk for heart diseases. One risk factor
of heart disease and cardiovascular problems is high blood pressure. In a study produced by
ScienceDirect, it was proven that subjects on vegetarian diets had lower

Colonial Life in Buchi Emecheta s The Joys of Motherhood and Wole Soyinka s Death and the King s
Horseman
Homi Bhaba writes that colonial mimicry is the desire for a reformed, recognizable Other, as a subject
of a difference that is almost the same, but not quite (86). The colonizer wants and needs the colonized
to be similar to himself, but not the same. If the native continues to behave in his traditional ways, he
brings no economic gain to the colonizer. But, if the colonized changes too much and is found to be
exactly the same as the colonizer, the colonizer is left with no argument for his supremacy. As Bhaba
puts it, in order to be effective, mimicry must continually produce its slippage, its excess, its
difference (86). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I may even lose my job (50). Here Nnaife shows that he only affiliates himself with the church to
protect his job. Later, when he no longer works for Dr. and Mrs. Meers, Nnaife disobeys the church
rules on monogamy and inherits one of his deceased brother s wives. Because he no longer needed the
church to keep his job, he abandoned it, displaying that he was not truly a believer of the Christian
faith. Nnu Ego appears to be even less converted to Christianity. She never truly abandons her
traditional beliefs. Throughout the novel, she refers to her chi and, in the end, she is even made into a
goddess herself. When she first moved to the city, Nnu Ego admitted that she did not understand what
Christianity was all about, and as she continued attending church she found that it had become
monotonous attending week after week (48). Unlike Joseph and Amusa, Nnu Ego never even appears
to accept the colonial religion as her own. Her traditional beliefs continue to guide her throughout the
story. Nnu Ego first realizes that she is pregnant for a second time because of a conversation with her
chi, long after she has been living in Lagos, the white man s city. After the conversation in a dream
with her chi, Nnu Ego realized that it would be difficult to explain it to him. This she knew was a bond
between her and her chi and her coming child. Nnaife had little to do with it. He was

44. The Lord Of The Covenant Essay
Our greatest example for covenant keeping is the Lord himself: For your Maker is your husband the
Lord Almighty is his name...The Lord will call you back as if you were a wife deserted and distressed
in spirit a wife who married young, only to be rejected, says your God. For a brief moment I
abandoned you, but with deep compassion I will bring you back. (Isaiah 54:5 6 New International
Version 1984)
Through the prophet, Isaiah, the Lord conveys to Israel the perseverance of the covenant between
Israel and himself, despite Israel s violation of the covenant. The Lord promises restoration to himself
through his compassion because of his love for Israel. Israel was painted as an adulteress in Hosea,
Jeremiah, Ezekiel and many other scriptures due to her pursuit of other gods, yet, like Hosea and his
prostitute bride, the Lord welcomes her back countless times because of his own faithfulness to the
covenant (Patterson, 2008). The Lord has shown since ancient times his desire for the covenant bond
of marriage to reflect his own relationship with his people. Now he shows this marriage covenant
through Christ and the New Covenant. The people of God are broadened to include Gentiles through
the Lord s covenant with Abraham (Galatians 3:6 9) and are all pledged in relationship with God
through the blood covenant of Christ s sacrifice. When the covenant is entered, nothing can sever it,
including our own actions (Romans 8:38 39). On this foundation, the Lord establishes the

45. Essay on Eddie Carbone as a Tragic Hero
Eddie Carbone as a Tragic Hero
Before I decide on whether Eddie Carbone is a tragic hero, we must define what the word tragic and
hero actually mean.
Tragic A tragedy is a type of drama. A tragedy traces the fall of the central figure, the hero , as he
grapples with his destiny. Historically, tragedy started in Ancient Greece. Greek tragedies usually
formed on a very important and powerful figure (a king or a prince perhaps) who makes an error or
judgement or who has a hamartia (fatal flaw) that leads to his tragic downfall.
In the context of a tragedy, the word hero means the central character or protagonist (the hero) whom
we admire or respect in some way, but who is flawed or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The money issue is a very well addressed issue in the play and is portrayed well, as when the play is
set (post World War II), money was very tight, and adopting a child without government benefits
(family or not) is very admirable and respectable. Another respectable and admirable thing he has
done is accepting two submarines (illegal immigrants effectively) and if he is caught with them he will
be fined. Again pops up the money issue where he is putting his money at risk for two people he has
never met, and that the only reason he is taking them in is because they are distant relatives of his
wife. This shows that at the beginning of the play he is, or seems to be a fairly decent guy. But, on the
other hand, as the play progresses, you gradually lose all respect for him. From the very fair and
decent guy he is at the beginning of the play, he turns into a bitter, resentful man. He goes from having
a gentle fatherly like possessiveness towards Catherine to a highly jealous possessiveness towards
Catherine for bitter and selfish reasons. It hints in the play that he has a sexual attraction o Catherine,
which he is in self denial about. Yet the icing on the cake for our losing all respect for him is the fact
he can t see what he s doing, how he s acting, all the problems he s caused. Which eventually leads to
him turning in the two submarines

46. The Vignette There Was An Old Woman
Do you believe minors need supervision to make sure they don t do anything? Yummy is about a kid
name Robert Sandifer who is 11 years old and had been involved in a gang named the Black
Disciples, and he tried to prove himself by shooting a rival gang member. When doing that, he missed
and shot Shavon Dean and killed her. After that he had been on the run for a long time trying to get
away from the cops. His own gang members had believed that he had drawn too much attention to
their gang the Black Disciples and eventually murdered him. The vignette There Was An Old Woman
is about how this woman named Rosa Vargas had lots of kids. Her kids did whatever they wanted,
Angel Vargas believed that he could fly and jumped of the roof and killed himself. The overall
message of Sandra Cisneros and Gregory Neri of these two stories was that minors need supervision
so they will not do things that can lead to horrible things happening.
Supervision is needed to make sure the minors don t do anything bad. In the vignette There was an
Old Woman it stated, But after a while you get tired of worrying about kids who aren t even yours.
Rosa Vargas kids did whatever they wanted and never listened to the neighbors, eventually the
neighbors gave up on trying to stop them from doing bad things. In Yummy, it reads that There were
so many kids, Yummy could disappear for days and nobody d notice. Robert Sandifer (Yummy) could
