On How the Artists of the Romantic Period Chose to React...
Throughout this assignment we will be taking a look at how artists during the Romantic period, that
took place around the 18th and 19th centuries, choose to react against the approaches and philosophy
established by artist during the age of Enlightenment. We will take a look at a few obviously Romantic
artworks to help us better our understanding of this fascinating movement.
To understand how Romanticism has rejected, or reacted to, the Enlightenment, we first need to take a
look at what artists believed during the Enlightenment era. According to Fred S. Kleiner, the
Enlightenment, which took place during the first part of 18th century, brought with it a new way of
thinking critically about the world and the humankind, independently of ... Show more content on

118) .Very little art was still being produce as a result of being patrons, thus artist had to adjust what
they painted and for who. Artist now had to produce art that were liked by the masses, as they
competed in this new market place, where massive quantities of art was on display.
Before looking at artworks from Henri Fuselli, Théodore Géricault and William Turner, we will first
take a look at the roots and origins of the romantic period. Romanticism was born when the Industrial
revolution had already been in full force over most of europe. The industrial boom and the synthetic,
man made landscapes that came with it, had major influences on the romantic world. Romanticism
gave them a taste for the natural, the foreign (exotic), and the emotional, according to Paul Brians
(Public.wsu.edu,1998). Romantics, unlike Neoclassical artist of the previous age, choose to shift the
emphasis from reason to feeling, from calculation to intuition and from objective nature to subjective
emotion according to Fred S. Kleiner (Fred S. Kleiner Gardner s, Art through the Ages,2013,pg 762).
Romantic artist were very interested in what the previous ages saw as The Black Ages. Romantic artist
saw beauty in this and choose to refer to it as Gothic Romance. In simpler terms one can say that they
were interested in the Middle Ages as a choice of subject matter, according to Paul Brains
(Public.wsu.com.1998) These interests in Gothic Romance lead writers like

Organizational Factors Associated With Collaboration...
The purpose of this submission is to recommend, with supporting rationale, an appropriate
methodology to address the research question (RQ): What does the research evidence suggest are the
organizational factors associated with collaboration within Fortune 500 firms? The reader will first
find the Background that discusses items that should be considered when determining the appropriate
systematic review methodology, then there will be an analysis of the current question using those
considerations. The paper will end with a brief conclusion describing the findings.
Background
The systematic review approach chosen by those conducting a study is based on several dimensions.
These include the researcher s epistemology (Rousseau, Manning, Denyer, 2008, pp. 485 487),
research study purpose (Gough, Oliver, Thomas, 2012, p. 58), primary research question (Gough et
al., 2012, p. 58; Harden Thomas, 2005, p. 266), purpose of the study (Gough et al., 2012, p. 76) and
the type of data available (Gough et al., 2012, p. 55). There is also the consideration of the
stakeholders and anticipated consumer of the report since culture and politics can influence the use of
the evidence that results from systematic reviews.
There are numerous specific systematic review methods described in the literature with each method
having a specific fit for purpose, appropriately considering the purpose of the reviews, the types of
questions to be answered, and evidence available for inclusion in

Saul Hudson
Saul Hudson was born to an African American mother and British father in London on July 23, 1965
and even though he was born in London he was raised for most of his life in Los Angeles, California.
Saul was given the nickname Slash , by a family friend because he was very energetic and constantly
in motion growing up. He is now known as slash by everyone, and he says that the only two people
that call him by his first real name are, his mom and his doctor.
Slash learned to play the guitar as a teenager with Robert Wolin, a teacher at Fairfax Music School but

Distillation Method Of Isopentyl Acetate ( Banana Oil )
Isopentyl Acetate (Banana Oil)
Introduction
The purpose of this experiment was to study the esterification reaction principle and master the
preparation method of the isoamyl acetate. It was use isoamyl alcohol and acetic acid as raw materials,
to the synthesis of isoamyl acetate. The necessary methods are reflux process and distillation process.
Experiment Scheme
Chemical Structure 1: Isopentyl alcohol Chemical Structure 2: Acetic acid Chemical Structure 3:
Isopentyl acetate Chemical Structure 4: Sulfuric acid Chemical Structure 5: Sodium bicarbonate
Chemical Structure 6: Sodium chloride Chemical Structure 7: Anhydrous sodium sulfate Reaction:
Mechanism: First. We weight the 10 ml graduated cylinder and record the data for 37.87g. Then put
5ml isopentyl alcohol and weight it with the 10 ml graduated cylinder for 41.94g. So, we get the
isopentyl alcohol weight is 4.07g. Then, we also weight 7ml glacial acetic acid and put it into the 10
ml graduated cylinder. We add 1 ml sulfuric acid and put it into the 10 ml graduated cylinder too.
After we mix all of the liquid, we put a boiling stone in the flask. Next, we good connection device
like the picture. Then heating under reflux. Before reflux, we should check it. First, we should wait
until the liquid began to boil and the color was changing to brown. Then, continue to heat for 75
minutes. After 75 minutes, we stop it. And we need to cool the liquid to the room temperature. Then
we ready 10ml ice water to cool the liquid. After cooling it, we put the liquid in the separatory funnel.
And we should add 5ml saturated aqueous sodium to separate it. After first separate it. Then add 5ml
saturated aqueous sodium chloride to separate it. Then transfer the liquid to a 25 ml round bottom
flask. After one week, we first weight the sample mass. Then put our sample to another group s
graduated cylinder. And weight the combine mass. Then put the sample into a distillation unit. To
begin the distillation and record the boiling point range. And we should also weight the mass after
distillation. We can calculate the percentage yield.

How Did Emmett Till Influence The Civil Rights Movement
He only whistled. But the woman he whistled at was white. He was black. A few days later, her angry
husband roused him from bed, told him to hurry up and dress. Three days later, his terribly battered
body surfaced in the muddy Tallahatchie River where it straightens out for a stretch through the cotton
rich flatlands of the delta. His name was Emmett Till. He was 14 years old. (Jallon, 1985) Over 60
years ago, the murder of Emmett Till shaped the course of human history significantly. News of his
death sparked outrage worldwide, and served as the catalyst for the emerging American Civil Rights
Movement. Now of course, the first things that come to mind when the Civil Rights Movement is
mentioned are people such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King. However, I firmly believe that
another name should join that list. Mamie Till Bradley, Emmett s mother, worked tirelessly to ensure
that his death would not be in vain, and his name would never be forgotten. ... Show more content on

She did this by becoming a civil rights activist delivering moving speeches to large crowds across the
nation on the topic of racial inequality and advocating for children in poor neighbourhoods. It s also
important to note that her actions inspired more than just the general public. One such person was
Rosa Parks. Parks herself told Mamie Till that it was the image of Emmett s disfigured face in the
casket that was on her mind when she refused to give up her seat on the bus, a hundred days after Till
s death. Rosa Parks would later be cited as one of Martin Luther King s inspirations for taking on the
Montgomery Bus Boycott, which many consider to be the official start of the Civil Rights Movement.
In a way, I suppose Mamie Till s passion to spread the word about what had happened to her son had
created a ripple of change, which is why I think she is so

Military Industrial Complex Essay
Position on Military Industrial Complex Catalina M. Young Archbishop Edward A. McCarthy Abstract
The Military Industrial Complex is a term coined by former President Dwight D. Eisenhower. This
refers to the relationship between the nation s armed forces and the industries that support them.
Though its name came about in the 1960s, this relationship between armed forces and private industry
dates back centuries. Recent legislation has been passed to help limit the power that this relationship
has over defense spending. For any country, military spending is a big part of the national budget.
Over time this business transaction has formed into a relationship between the nation s armed forces
and these private defense industries. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At that point in time, arms were still being manufactured and shipped over from Britain. Hamilton not
only saw this as a more economical way to obtain arms, but also as a way to cut ties with foreign arms
producers, which he thought was key to national security. This seemingly small proposal at the time,
lead to the eventual production of arms on American soil. From this point onward the country s
defense and economy were intertwined. As the need for more weapons grew, the process of making
them transformed from a single person hand crafting a gun, to an assembly line of people each trained
to build a separate part of a gun. In 1808 a policy for arming the United States militia called for more
guns to be made. This act supplied the militia with $200,000 in arms and military equipment annually.
(Encyclopedia of the New American Nation, 2013) Pretty soon thereafter national arms systems were
set upon the national armories. A network of reliable arms manufacturers emerged. Contracts were
drawn up between these armories and private manufacturers, who were more likely to test new means
and materials to improve guns. This was key to an ideal system of arms production. This was the
beginning of the military industrial complex. It was here that the desire for an innovative military arms
snowballed into the high tech industry that it is today. In the councils of government, we must guard
against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or

In mid September 2005, Ashley Swenson, the chief financial officer (CFO) of a large computer aided
design and computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) equipment manufacturer needed to decide
whether to pay out dividends to the firm s shareholders, or to repurchase stock. If Swenson chose to
pay out dividends, she would have to also decide upon the magnitude of the payout. A subsidiary
question is whether the firm should embark on a campaign of corporate image advertising, and change
its corporate name to reflect its new outlook. The case serves as an omnibus review of the many
practical aspects of the dividend and share buyback decisions, including (1) ... Show more content on

(Or alternatively, Why pay any dividends?) How will Gainesboro s various providers of capital, such
as its stockholders and bankers, react to a declaration of no dividend? What about the announcement
of a 40% payout? How would they react to a residual payout?
The instructor needs to elicit from the students the notions that the dividend payout announcement
may affect stock price and that at least some stockholders prefer dividends. Students should also
mention the signaling and clientele considerations.
4. What risks does the firm face?
Discussion following this question should address the nature of the industry, the strategy of the firm,
and the firm s performance. This discussion will lay the groundwork for the review of strategic
considerations that bears on the dividend decision.
5. What is the nature of the share repurchase decision that Swenson must make? How would this
affect the dividend decision?
The discussion here must present the repercussions of a share repurchase decision on the share price,
as well as on the dividend question. Signaling and clientele considerations must also be considered.
6. Does the stock market appear to reward high dividend payout? What about low dividend payout?
Does it matter what type of investor owns the shares? What is the impact on share price of dividend
policy?
The data can be interpreted to support either view. The point is to show that simple extrapolations

Not everyone who is overly hyperactive, inattentive, or impulsive has an attention disorder. If most

Specialists consider several critical questions to find an answer. Do these symptoms occur more often

Victor Frankenstein was and had always been a curious boy and intelligent boy. His childhood
consisted of revealing and investigating facts about the world that he lives in. This undoubtedly led to
his desire to explore and take part in adventures including his journey to the North Pole later on in his
life. The quote itself however, has several interpretations. The first part explains that the world had so
much to uncover, to reveal about itself. To Victor, he thought that it was a secret land that was yet to
be discovered and possessed so many secrets that were left to be unveiled to the public eye. At birth,
his curiosity lingered throughout not just childhood but also carried into his adult life. His curiosity
was his excuse that he created to take the blame for his actions. He was curious about nature, and also
about the fact that his father insisted on him not pursuing a career in chemistry. His insistence to find

Elizabeth was not curious. She viewed the world as a vacant, blank canvas that people sought to fill

Private Security And Public Security
There is no doubt that in today s society the need for private security is important. For many years, it
has played a major part of everyday life. Through the years, many businesses have used private
security to protect property and prevent crime. Private security agencies are also held responsible for
protecting many of America s institutions, critical infrastructure, utilities, transportation and health
facilities (Strom et al., 2010). Additionally, not only does private security play an important role in
domestic territory, but internationally. The fact of the matter is that private security in modern times
plays a major role in society. The attacks which took place on September 11, 2001 changed the
industry in the years that followed. Secondly, their role within the criminal justice system is important
as they must be able to collaborate with other agencies such as law enforcement. Lastly, the main
service provided by private sectors, guard services, is one of the most important jobs within the
industry. The fact, however, is that private security has played a major part in all aspect since terrorist

To begin, one must look at what private security is. It is said that many experts do not agree on what
constitutes private security. Due to this there are many different types of definitions. Some of these

Cellular Boundaries Are Permeable
In biology, I learned that cellular boundaries can be permeable. Initially, this concept was intriguing in
and of itself, that cells can release and absorb information to perform necessary functions. Three years
later, that particular biology class and the principle it revealed has held a place in my mind. The phrase
boundaries are permeable returns to my thoughts at odd times, not always bearing the original
scientific connotation. Most often, the phrase returns when there is an overlap in subject matter, an
opportunity to bridge ideas that were previously considered distinct to respective areas of study. The
three words have remained with me, serving to analogize the ability to effectively apply information

that the timelines are not the same. In the poem it s in april 18, 1775, but in letter it has two timelines,

When the marriage had been announced all she could do was watch as her heart broke into a million

then he would never see her again. About two weeks after the marriage announcement Nicole quit her
job as a stewardess. Jetson didn t really care. He had a sexy new fiancé, why should he care about
some lowly stewardess? Stacy was a goddess compared to Nicole. He had to admit that with the new
male stewardess his flights did get a little boring but what did it matter? He knew when he went home
there would be a sexy nymph waiting for him. Jetson honestly didn t give Nicole a second thought
after finding out she had quit. She had just been a fun fuck while it lasted. He had moved onto bigger

Educational Attainment And Earnings Analysis
2.9 Educational Attainment and Earnings From the point of view of the development economists,
education not only offers the opportunity to escape deprivation through improvements in employment
and earnings prospects but also has unproductive benefits such as improved health and ability to
function and Successfully integrate into the mainstream society, all factors that could promote better
education and labor market outcomes (Van der Berg, 2008: 7). The primary focus of research by labor
economists was therefore to determine how much the education level contributes to employment
probabilities and subsequent wages and how the level of education contributes to such incomes. In its
simplest form, human capital theory posits that an individual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

However, as countries develop demand for specialized workers generally increases, and return to
higher education and tertiary education generally increase as well. Education is
11 not only instrumental in improving the well being of the currently educated, but it also improves
the results of subsequent generations. South African Matriculator (those completing grade 12) who
have at least one parent who have matriculated also earn about twice their counterparts who do not
have a maternal parent (Van der Berg, 2007: 861). Parental education, possibly through the parent s
social networks or the transfer of a human capital variable cannot be observed, seems to have a
positive impact on their children s profits. For the most part, the benefits of education are set in
motion through the labor market. The best educated are more likely to be employed, they are generally
more productive and are rewarded with higher earnings when employed. Some educational benefits,
such as improved health, may also not be explicitly related to the labor market, but could increase the
pecuniary benefits associated with labor market participation. Although the benefits of education are
more pronounced for the children of educated parents, social mobility upwards is also possible for the
poor who invest in

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Biocellulose
5. DISCUSSION
Bacterial cellulose or biocellulose (BC) is an extracellular cellulose naturally produced by many
microorganisms. BC has been considered as an alternative biomaterial since it possesses superior
qualities to other cellulose. BC exhibits many unique characteristics which are different from those of
other plant celluloses Biocellulose has chemical and physical properties that are superior to the
properties of plant derived cellulose. Compared to plant cellulose, the nanofibril network of
biocellulose has interesting properties such as excellent water holding capacity, high degree of
polymerization, high crystallinity, high purity, good biocompatibility, and excellent mechanical
properties. Therefore, due to its many unique properties, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The cost of the fermentation medium represents a critical aspect of the commercial production of
biocellulose. The cheaper substrate used instead of the commonly used sugars as glucose or fructose
might result in a lower cost of the final product. In this context, two algal substrates have been tested
such as green alga (U. lactuca) and sea grass (P. oceanic). Data confirmed that P. oceanic was the best
substrate in medium HSPO supporting the highest production of biocellulose (5.7 g/l). Carbohydrates
are the major component of seagrass and seaweeds (ca. 50 70% on a dry basis) (Uchida, 2011),
containing mostly polysaccharides to construct algal tissue. For example, brown algae contain alginate
and fucoidan as major components. Red algae contain galactan (e.g. agar, carrageenan) as a major
component. Seagrasses and green algae contain hemicellulose and cellulose as major components.
These major algal polysaccharides are known to be unfavorable substrates for fermentation. This may
be one of the reasons why algal fermentation technology has yet to be developed. Recently, seaweed
could be used as a substrate for lactic acid and ethanol fermentation, provided that the algal tissue was
saccharified with cellulase enzymes. This finding opened the possibility of obtaining foods and related
items from algal fermentation (Uchida, 2002; Uchida and Murata, 2002; Uchida and Murata, 2004).
According to all these advances in algal fermentation, we suggest that there is a great possibility of
creating a new medium for industrial biocellulose production by G. xylinus using algal fermentation
technology in the near

Advantage Of European Colonization
European Colonization
Historians often question why Europe had such an advantage over the three existing worlds during the
16th and 17th century. Europe managed to take over the New World even though they were greatly out
numbered by the native people due to the fact that Europeans were at both a material and cultural
advantage. Europeans took command over the New World because their technology was superior to
that of the Native people, they were more organized politically speaking, and they had a capitalist
attitude toward the New World.
Around 13,000 years ago there was a piece of frozen ice that stretched between Russia and Alaska,
known as the Bering Strait Land Bridge. Between 12,000 and 5,000 years ago Asians migrated across
the Bering Strait and down the west coast, following herds of animals and spreading across the
Americas. This land bridge was below sea level and became covered by water due to the fact that the
sea level rose, sealing off the people living in the Americas from the rest of the world.
Although Native Americans were not as technologically advanced as the Europeans, the Natives were
in a sense ahead of their time. They had scientists, accurate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

could no longer walk about... unable to change position, to stretch out on their sides or face down, or

Using Wireless Sensor Network Systems
Introduction
A typical manufacturing factory is facing problems in computerizing their systems. To computerize
hundreds of electronic machines in a work area, the network or networking is the main priority. The
Industrial wireless technologies and standards used by plants can improve plant efficiency, safety,
security, and productivity. Wireless drastically changes the economics of the financial investments in
the new technology with its lower implementation costs and total cost of ownership and rapid return
on investment. Mainly the wireless networking is used to save cost of installation and the flexibility

through neighboring instruments back to the gateway device. This is used for non critical monitoring
and they do not require a fast update rate. The more the instruments the faster the update rate, this
could be as fast as one a second. There is a pitfall to these devices and that is battery life, but this can
be alleviated with adding more access points. Most of the time users get three years battery life from
their field instruments while using a one second update rates.

The Causes Of Racial And Ethnic Discrimination During...
During World War II, America saw unprecedented levels of racial and ethnic prejudice in nations
around the world. However, many people were unaware of the discrimination happening on America s
own front lines. Homosexual World War II veteran Ted Allenby once said, What is unthinkable is
fighting a war that is unnecessary, (Terkel, 185). Groups including the Jewish, African Americans, the
Japanese, and homosexuals were all victimized during World War II. These groups had vastly different
experiences which are often times overlooked in United States history. Dealing with inequality on the
home front, these minority soldiers were fighting a war not only against the Axis powers, but also
against those who mistreated them. Jewish Americans may have had the most motivation to fight in
World War II and only knew half of what was happening to their kin overseas. This incredible
motivation is what helped them push through the troubles they dealt with within the American
military. During World War II, many soldiers excluded their Jewish counterparts and blamed them for
the wrongdoings of their ancestors in the distant past. In Studs Terkel s interview with John Garcia,
Garcia explained that when he was finally allowed to fight in the military, his uppers deemed that he
was caucasian and some of his fellow white soldiers told him not to speak or associate with any of the
Jewish people because they had killed Jesus Christ, (Terkel, 22). While it is obvious that this claim is a

The United States V. Paramount Pictures (1948)
After World War II, the filmmaking industry experienced a dramatic change. The Paramount decision

instrumental in shaping the filmmaking business into what we know today. United States v. Paramount

this particular war. Additionally, there are many novels that document the battle tactics of a particular
political faction. Marc Bloch s, Strange Defeat, and Catherine Merridale s, Ivan s War, exemplify both
incidences. Furthermore, the two separately document ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the Second World War, Bloch was assigned an administrative position and given a fairly high
staff level rank. However, he loathed his assigned rank and its entailed duties, which concerned the
management of fuel depots. Soon after the Nazis occupied France, Bloch became a member of the
French Resistance to further protect his homeland. His primary intent with joining the resistance was

os the average molecular weight of a fatty acid mixture.
Objectives addressed in this experiment includes: (1) characterization of oil samples by determination
of saponification and iodine numbers (2) estimation of molecular weights of fat or oil sample (3)
explain the methods employed in the characterization of oil or fat samples
METHODOLOGY
Determination of Saponification Number
Oil used were lauric oil, vegetable oil and lard. Each triacylglycerol was weighed to 1.0g. Each were
placed n separate round bottom flask.. 15mL of 5% alcoholic KOH was added into each flask from a
burette. KOH was used in order to hydrolyze the glyceryl esters to glycerol and the potassium salts of
fatty acids. Alcoholic KOH was used to allow oil be soluble in it. [1] Two to three pieces of boiling
chips were added so as to prevent formation of large bubbles [1]. It was then subjected to reflux for an
hour. After which, it was then cooled to room temperature. The solution was then transferred into an
Erlenmeyer flask. Small amounts of hexane were added to rinse of remaining oil from the round
bottom flask. It was then titrated with 0.5M HCl, using 1% phenolphthalein as the indicator. Volume
of KOH used was used to determine the saponification number by using the eq. 2

The paper will end with a brief conclusion describing the findings. Background The systematic review approach chosen by those conducting a study is based on several dimensions. These include the researcher s epistemology (Rousseau, Manning, Denyer, 2008, pp. 485 487), research study purpose (Gough, Oliver, Thomas, 2012, p. 58), primary research question (Gough et al., 2012, p. 58; Harden Thomas, 2005, p. 266), purpose of the study (Gough et al., 2012, p. 76) and the type of data available (Gough et al., 2012, p. 55). There is also the consideration of the stakeholders and anticipated consumer of the report since culture and politics can influence the use of the evidence that results from systematic reviews. A few days later, her angry husband roused him from bed, told him to hurry up and dress. Three days later, his terribly battered body surfaced in the muddy Tallahatchie River where it straightens out for a stretch through the cotton rich flatlands of the delta. His name was Emmett Till. He was 14 years old. (Jallon, 1985) Over 60 years ago, the murder of Emmett Till shaped the course of human history significantly. News of his death sparked outrage worldwide, and served as the catalyst for the emerging American Civil Rights Movement. Now of course, the first things that come to mind when the Civil Rights Movement is mentioned are people such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King. McCarthy Abstract The Military Industrial Complex is a term coined by former President Dwight D. Eisenhower. This refers to the relationship between the nation s armed forces and the industries that support them. Though its name came about in the 1960s, this relationship between armed forces and private industry dates back centuries. At that point in time, arms were still being manufactured and shipped over from Britain. Hamilton not only saw this as a more economical way to obtain arms, but also as a way to cut ties with foreign arms producers, which he thought was key to national security. This seemingly small proposal at the time, lead to the eventual production of arms on American soil. From this point onward the country s defense and economy were intertwined. As the need for more weapons grew, the process of making them transformed from a single person hand crafting a gun, to an assembly line of people each trained to build a separate part of a gun. In 1808 a policy for arming the United States militia called for more guns to be made. This act supplied the militia with $200,000 in arms and military equipment annually. (Encyclopedia of the New American Nation, 2013) Pretty soon thereafter national arms systems were set upon the national armories. A network of reliable arms manufacturers emerged. Contracts were drawn up between these armories and private manufacturers, who were more likely to test new means and materials to improve guns. This was key to an ideal system of arms production. This was the beginning of the military industrial complex. It was here that the desire for an innovative military arms snowballed into the high tech industry that it is today. Carbohydrates are the major component of seagrass and seaweeds (ca. 50 70% on a dry basis) (Uchida, 2011), containing mostly polysaccharides to construct algal tissue. For example, brown algae contain alginate and fucoidan as major components. Red algae contain galactan (e.g. agar, carrageenan) as a major component. Seagrasses and green algae contain hemicellulose and cellulose as major components. These major algal polysaccharides are known to be unfavorable substrates for fermentation. This may be one of the reasons why algal fermentation technology has yet to be developed. Recently, seaweed could be used as a substrate for lactic acid and ethanol fermentation, provided that the algal tissue was saccharified with cellulase enzymes. This finding opened the possibility of obtaining foods and related items from algal fermentation (Uchida, 2002; Uchida and Murata, 2002; Uchida and Murata, 2004). According to all these advances in algal fermentation, we suggest that there is a great possibility of creating a new medium for industrial biocellulose production by G. xylinus using algal fermentation technology in the near ... • 27. Advantage Of European Colonization European Colonization Historians often question why Europe had such an advantage over the three existing worlds during the 16th and 17th century. Europe managed to take over the New World even though they were greatly out numbered by the native people due to the fact that Europeans were at both a material and cultural advantage. Europeans took command over the New World because their technology was superior to that of the Native people, they were more organized politically speaking, and they had a capitalist attitude toward the New World. Around 13,000 years ago there was a piece of frozen ice that stretched between Russia and Alaska, known as the Bering Strait Land Bridge. Between 12,000 and 5,000 years ago Asians migrated across the Bering Strait and down the west coast, following herds of animals and spreading across the Americas. This land bridge was below sea level and became covered by water due to the fact that the sea level rose, sealing off the people living in the Americas from the rest of the world. • 29. The Causes Of Racial And Ethnic Discrimination During... During World War II, America saw unprecedented levels of racial and ethnic prejudice in nations around the world. However, many people were unaware of the discrimination happening on America s own front lines. Homosexual World War II veteran Ted Allenby once said, What is unthinkable is fighting a war that is unnecessary, (Terkel, 185). Groups including the Jewish, African Americans, the Japanese, and homosexuals were all victimized during World War II. These groups had vastly different experiences which are often times overlooked in United States history. Dealing with inequality on the home front, these minority soldiers were fighting a war not only against the Axis powers, but also against those who mistreated them. Jewish Americans may have had the most motivation to fight in World War II and only knew half of what was happening to their kin overseas. This incredible motivation is what helped them push through the troubles they dealt with within the American military. During World War II, many soldiers excluded their Jewish counterparts and blamed them for the wrongdoings of their ancestors in the distant past. In Studs Terkel s interview with John Garcia, Garcia explained that when he was finally allowed to fight in the military, his uppers deemed that he was caucasian and some of his fellow white soldiers told him not to speak or associate with any of the Jewish people because they had killed Jesus Christ, (Terkel, 22).
