Military Spouses and the Challenges of Military Life
Running head: MILITARY SPOUSES AND THE CHALLENGES OF MILITARY
1
Military Spouses and the Challenges of Military Life DANITZA JAMES Saint Leo University
MILITARY SPOUSES AND THE CHALLENGES OF MILITARY Abstract Army life is unique to
say the least. The subculture, with its own language, rules, acronyms and ways, is foreign to the
general population. The Global war on Terrorism has brought more awareness and certainly more
curiosity about Army life. (Krajeski, 2006, 2008, p. 5).Today, more than ever, the military spouse is a
pioneer who travels to strange lands, rears her
2
family under nomadic conditions, and many times copes with the stress of surviving on his or her
own. (Alt Stone, 1991, p. 11) A military spouse must struggle ... Show more content on

Some couples express that too much time together can also become stressful. (Krajeski, 2006, 2008, p.
55). Some couples describe separation in moderation like a pause in a musical composition it
enhances the whole (Krajeski, 2006, 2008, p. 55). There are many things that come into keeping a
marriage together such as; love, respect, loyalty, communication, and understanding, but that all is part
of being married to the military.
MILITARY SPOUSES AND THE CHALLENGES OF MILITARY Military spouses role vary in
ranks, from enlisted to officers they are all seen and approached in different ways because of the
military rank his or her soldiers rank may be. The role of the officer s spouse encompasses a set of
activities that are mostly traditional (Harrell, 2001, p. 59). Officer s spouses often are considered to be
as elite as their soldier, depending on their rank, in fact an officer s wife becomes an extension of the
officer (Harrell, 2001, p. 61).
5
The differences between officers and enlisted spouses also goes back to the 1700s where officers were
although elected by their own man many of the officer ranks were filled by wealthy landowners and
the enlisted ranks were filled by the serving class (Alt Stone, 1991, p. 2).

The Importance Of Minority Rights
All human beings are entitled to equality and justice through our legal system and the state must
accommodate to the rights of the minority groups. Some minority rights seem to conflict with liberal
rights, for an example forcing women to stay home. (Freedman, 30 October 2017). In this essay, I will
argue that the state should not endorse rights that infringes with the equality of the rights of a minority,
therefore inhibiting the state s ability to treat all of its citizens with equal concern and respect. Bill 62
and African Americans are two examples of the majority not being tolerant of the minorities rights.
Achieving equality for all citizens in a society requires granting special rights to minorities in a liberal
state. Liberal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also believe that certain parts of the world practice the religion minorities are practicing and they
can practice there. They are not open to viewing the religion or rights of minority groups. A state ran
by a majority could very easily use power they don t have against the minority rights. An example of
the government misusing their power is the history of African American being used involuntarily as
slaves and prevented from integrating into the institutions of the majority culture through racial
segregation (Kymlicka 360). Africa American may have the greatest injustices of all the ethnocultural
groups, mainly because of their historical mistreatment by the majority. Denial of the rights of certain
minority groups cause conflict between groups and the rights of the minorities. Equality within a
society means the delivering of minority rights. Multiculturalism in fact fails because everyone does
not share a common set of beliefs and interest as the rest of the citizens. Since a society already has an
official language and culture, the state still isn t entitled to force this on the citizens. It is up to them
which culture they choose to practice. Over the past years, the difficulty for the state to given
minorities rights have decreased in the sense that there are awareness groups to make the minority
groups more

The Spratly Islands Dispute
Swaine s article makes the point to ask whether man made features should be allowed territorial
integrity, but doesn t answer the question. His solutions to the Spratly Islands dispute all assume that
China will be able to claim EEZs and territorial waters around Mischief Reef and its man made
features. However, what these features are, exactly, can t be overlooked when examining this issue.
China began by dredging and dumping sand on a small portion of the slightly submerged reefs and,
over the past few years, have transformed it into a full blown and developed island. The sand has been
cemented and paved in order to ensure sturdiness so that vehicles could be transported and buildings
erected. The Chinese are seeking to reinforce their claims to the Spratly Islands, rocky outcrops in the
South China Sea, by dredging and building installations there such as lighthouses and a runway.
Having structures on a sandbar doesn t necessarily give it territorial integrity, however. Though China
claims ownership of this part of the Spratly Islands, it is not the only claimant. Vietnam, among others,
may even have a better claim, as its coast is closer in nautical miles. If simply dumping sand and
paving afforded territorial rights to a country, then the United States could easily build man made
islands in every sea and harbor in the world in order to have a monopoly on naval activity. The
ridiculousness of this example proves why China will not be able to gain EEZs around the

Discrimination In The Movie Bullies
Think of how different the world would be if we did not accept other s views. How would that affect
us? Three creators thought about this topic and show how the world could be. They showed different
situations through a movie, an article, and a court hearing. Without accepting other views violence and
discrimination would be inevitable and could cause much worse problems. Today acceptance of views
is practiced by a large majority of the population around the world. Opinions on people or objects
should not be dependent on beliefs or contrast of views is a recurring message.
Throughout the film Bullied directed by Bill Brummel, Jamie came out as a homosexual and the other
boys did not like that. They physically hurt him by hitting, kicking and even peeing on him just
because he was different. Many classmates at Ashland Middle School saw him as gay that was enough
for some campus bullies (1:54 2:03). This statement shows the discrimination against Jamie just on
the fact that he is different. Jamie was against the bullies because they ridiculed him. The bullies were
against Jamie because he was gay. I just know that it hurt a lot to hear those words every day (2:11
2:13) said Jamie about being bullied every day. The quote by Jamie shows the difficult times and
feelings not only him but all people can accumulate if discriminated against. By the end of the story,
Jamie defended himself by putting a lawsuit, which he won, on the school system for failure to oblige
to complaints from Jamie and his family. This film can show what some people go through in life
without acceptance of differences. Again implying the severe importance of acceptance of differences.
In the article Towards a True Refuge the author, Aung San Suu Kyi discusses problems we have we
discrimination and how that affects immigration and communications with other countries. The
greatest threats to global security today come not from the economic deficiencies of the poorest
nations but from religious, racial (or tribal) and political dissensions (lines 4 6). Aung San Suu Kyi
wrote this statement to say global security is merely a fear of differences in cultures. The nation is
against immigrants and others because they did not feel safe around

Coastline Erosion Research Paper
The very nature of our ocean is to rise and fall, to sway with the pull of the moon, and to churn
violently as the winds howl. The ocean has been this way since its inception and it will continue to do
so as the arrow of time marches on. There have been cycles in which the nature of the ocean has
wavered, but an equilibrium is kept, and life adapts. However, in our grotesque folly, we have decided
that this should no longer be the case. We have changed the nature of our oceans so suddenly that life
is crushed by force exerted through this change. Temperatures rise without regard to ecosystem or
environment. Glaciers sweat profusely from the bombardment of heat. Sea levels rise. The importance
of the oceans to the world at large cannot be understated. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the sea rises, the waves push more into the coast and drag the coastal deposits back into the ocean.
Similar to hill sides and mountain sides that experience erosion when they have low or no existing
vegetation to protect from the eroding effects of the weather, coastlines face the issue of erosion as
well. If this were to happen, the recession of coastline ecosystem may lead to more damaging effects
due to the sea and its weather on the nearby land area and people. Fortunately, the effects of coastline
erosion can be somewhat mitigated. With regards to diminishing coasts, there will be a massive
displacement of people. As the sea level rises, the current coastlines will recede. Unfortunately, there
are large portions of people who live near coasts. This is especially true on islands. With the sea level
rising, we will need to find ways to take care of the people that will leave the area and the large
amount of damage done by the encroaching coast line. There are remedies to these issues, one of
which is build up fortifications against the sea rise. The sea rise can be mitigated through various
means. One of these is to build a wall that will keep water out of areas that are near the sea and in
danger of flooding or destruction due to sea level

A Wrinkle In Time
Thesis Paper
Draft 1
Good and Evil are just a point of view. This quote means, that good and evil are just something a
person believes, or looks at another person. You could think a person is evil, or you could think he/she
is good, by their behaviour and nature. This thesis paper will show you that it is a point of view. It
includes sources, primarily from the book, A Wrinkle In Time . Some other sources are Ramayan , A
Mauryan Adventure and Wonder .
Starting off with the first source, A Wrinkle In Time . This is the primary source, as the statement
arose from this book. From the chapter, IT , it was seen that IT , thought by controlling the people of
Camazotz, he was doing the right thing. Whereas, others didn t think so. This ... Show more content

This comes from the book, The Ramyana , by Ralph T. H. Griffith. On page 884 885, he says that
Lakshmana cut of the nose of Ravana s sister, Surpnakha. To take revenge, Ravana thought by
kidnapping Sita and making Rama and Lakshmana pay for their doings, he was doing the right thing.
The whole of Ayodhya, though, thought he was being evil by kidnapping Sita. This means that, from a
point of view, taking revenge, on someone, is good. From a different point of view, a revenge an be an
evil thing to commit to.
This leads us to our third secondary source, from the book, A Mauryan Adventure by Subadhra Sen
Gupta. Kamalika and Kartik think of killing the king to take revenge of his father as the king didn t
care of his father s death. Kartik s sister Madhura stops him from doing such an evil thing. This again
shows that there are different points of view on good and evil. Kartik thinks it is good, but Madhura
thinks it s evil. This shows good and evil are just a point of view.
To conclude, you can say that good and evil are just a point of view, a mere shadow, as of the many
reason shown in various books. Although all of these may be fictional or mythical, they all implement
the same thing; true life. You can find these in everyday occourances, all the fights you had or will
have, was just the cause of a point of view. Wait a second, think, and act. To sing a song, you must

Essay on The Process Of An Internal Combustion Engine
Process Essay
Process of a 4 stroke Internal Combustion Engine
A common phrase that is heard whilst growing up is curiosity killed the cat . This phrase might be true
but; ingenuity brought the cat back . Having a mindset in which giving up is never an option has
plagued most inventors of the modern day, especially a high school drop out named Nikolaus August
Otto, born in 1832. Otto was responsible for the development and improvement of the 4 stroke motor
that is used today in just about every automobile on the road. Many people drive cars but fail to realize
how they work, and don t try to learn about engines because they think it is complex, and not an easy
concept to grasp. Air, fuel, spark, and combustion are the premise ... Show more content on

In the next step the air travels into the combustion chamber (cylinder), where it is mixed with the other
components of combustion.
Equally important as the air, is the fuel going into the cylinder. Fuel starts off in the gas tank of the car
and then gets pumped into the fuel lines by the fuel pump. The fuel goes through the fuel lines and
into the fuel rail. Attached to the fuel rail are electronically controlled injectors (one per cylinder),
which are controlled by the mass air sensor. The mass air senor regulates how much fuel is necessary
to mix with the air to achieve the ideal air to fuel ratio. The injectors spray into the cylinder at
synchronized times mixing with air and eventually resulting in combustion.
The final and most important steps of the Internal Combustion Engine are the movements of the
pistons. At this point in the process fuel, and air are both present inside the chamber and are combined
into a ratio, this is called the air fuel ratio, short AFR. There are four motions of each piston; they are
in perfect balance and harmony, much like watching an orchestra perform. These motions (strokes) are
detailed as follows:
• On the intake stroke, the intake valve has opened. (The intake valve is the opening that the air and
fuel are released into the cylinder) The piston is moving down, and a mixture of air and vaporized fuel
is being

Analysis Of Santa Clause Is Coming To Town
The song, Santa Claus is Coming to Town is a very happy and cheerful song that is played during the
month of December to bring out the Christmas spirit in people. The history behind it is how two men
got their big break and made one of the most played Christmas songs of all time. The song was
originally written by John Frederick Coots and composed by Haven Gillespie on October 1933.
Gillespie was in charge of expressing his gift of writing children s song lyrics while Coots came up
with the tune that caught the attention of young children. The two came up with the song while riding
a subway car in New York. The two men had a masterpiece in their hands, but needed someone to
produce it. Many artists passed on the song because they didn t believe the it would hit big on the
charts and would be difficult to sell, especially since it was a song for kids. Coots at the time was a
writer for Eddie Cantor and tried to persuade him to sing the song live on his radio station. Cantor was
undecided on whether to sing it, but his wife eventually convinced him to give the song a chance. He
ended up performing it live on November 1934 on his radio station and brought huge publicity to the
song. After it was aired on the radio station, the song blew up. People from all over were requesting to
hear the song over and over again. It sold over 400,00 copies and 300,00 of those were sold within the
first 24 hours. The song made the writers millionaires with hundreds of copies being sold. It

Decision Making Process Analysis
Normally people do not break down how they make decisions, they just decide. But, for people who
are making decisions for a larger group, knowing the process could be helpful. The first step in the
process is to identify the problem by fully understanding and gathering all the information of the
problem. Secondly, you want to think of alternatives or other options for handling the issue. Thirdly,
you want to access or evaluate all the alternatives and consider the possible outcome. Finally, you go
forward with the decision and evaluate the outcome (Kinicki and Williams, 2016). These steps are
helpful and critical when making decisions for large groups or an organization. Along with the steps to
decision are the four styles of decision making; they are directive, analytical, conceptual, and
behavioral (Kinicki and Williams, 2016). Directive is used by leaders who decides quickly. They make
decisions on the basis of a relatively small amount of information. Analytical managers make
decisions by researching lots data and having alternatives choices. The conceptual style is notable in
managers with the need for recognition and success. They tend to be creative and inventive and are
willing to take a risk. Behavioral characterizes managers who work well with others. They are

The Importance Of Characters In The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz
In today s society, the variety of experiences one endures throughout his lifetime develops the full
potential of his character. In L. Frank Baum s, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the quest of the minor
characters, the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion, contribute to their individual
discoveries of inner strength. The self acclaimed unintelligent Scarecrow demonstrates his smarts and
resourcefulness multiple times during the voyage to the Land of Oz but does not acknowledge his full
capability until the end of the trip. Similarly, the Tin Woodman, despite the lack of a physical heart,
does not realize his compassionate acts throughout the journey prove that he is truly a kind, sensitive
man. Whereas the Cowardly Lion is the bravest and courageous out of all the characters throughout
the entire expedition. The tests and trials the minor characters endure on their quest cause each of their
individual characters to grow to their full potential, finding the strength from within they lack.
The Scarecrow is oblivious to his own personal growth and development throughout the journey.
Before he faces challenges on the way to the Land of Oz, he is initially very soft spoken and
unconfident in himself. He believes that, brains are the only things worth having in this world, no
matter whether one is a crow or a man, (Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Baum 47). This statement of his
value for intelligence demonstrates his inability to see the intellect within himself. The desperate
longing for a brain shows how prior to the journey the Scarecrow does not obtain any inner strength to
look highly upon himself. As the travels continue, his actions prove his intelligence but still, he does
not acknowledge the fact. The Scarecrow is a natural born leader with his quick, rational decision
making skills. He instructs the Tinman to, build a raft, so we can float to the other side, and as the
Tinman does as he is told, the Scarecrow finds, on the river bank a tree full of fine fruit, (Baum 82).
The Scarecrow s great solutions to the obstacles set in front of the group are infallible, and his helpful
resourcefulness allows them to survive and further progress on their journey. By the end of the
journey, the Scarecrow is an

Comparing Dionysius And Socrates
Ethics are what separates civilized men from savages, driving their decisions, and determining their
destiny. The actions of both Dionysius and Socrates, in both Bacchae and Phaedrus respectively, are
driven by their personal ethics and beliefs in justice. Bacchae, a Greek tragedy written by Euripides,
tells the story of the Greek God Dionysus s arrival to ancient city of Thebes, and the city s reaction
towards him and his strange religion. Phaedrus on the other hand is a dialogue, written by Plato, about
a series of arguments between Socrates and Phaedrus starting with what makes a good speech,
journeying into the fundamental understanding of the universe itself. Dionysius, the protagonist of
Bacchae, having returned from south east Asia, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

what separates him from the other gods, in that he acknowledges the harm his actions will bring to
Thebes, promising to undo all the damage upon their acceptance of him, while most of the other gods
would leave after satisfying their quest for vengeance. The most important line in this quote is the last

Margaret Paston Letters
There are thousands of surviving letters written by members of the Paston family, who lived in East
Anglia in the fifteenth century. Margaret Paston, an heiress of the Mautby family who married the
lawyer John Paston I in 1440, wrote many of these letters. This particular letter, written in a plain and
conversational style expected of personal correspondences of this period , deals with the secret
marriage of Margaret s daughter Margery Paston to the family bailiff Richard Calle. It was written
September tenth, 1469, to Sir John Paston II, Margaret s son, who was working as a Justice of the
Peace in Norfolk . Margaret acted as a business partner with her husband as he was often away
working in London. The letters she wrote to him often detail the ways she is upholding her role as
wife and mother, as well as casting dispersions on those who fail to live up to society s standards for
conduct. As the wife of a lawyer, she most certainly knew the value of written evidence, and many of
her letters may be looked at as her way of proving she was fulfilling her obligations to her family . ...

Vampirism Research Paper
Throughout history, vampirism and werewolfism have been the basis of most horror stories but some
people believe they have come across these mythical creatures. An example of a werewolf sighting is
that of Lorianne Endrizzi in the autumn of 1989 in Wisconsin, USA. She was driving on Bray Road
where she thought someone was kneeling at the side of the road. She slowed down and the figure
stared at her from six feet away from her car. The creature was coated head to toe with grey and brown
hair, with large fangs and sharp ears. She stated to a reporter that his face was long and had a snout,
like a wolf. The figure s eyes apparently glowed in the darkness and they were a yellow gold colour.

Usually, the werewolf turns back into a human at sunrise, with no recall of the previous night s
actions. Lycanthropy is a clinical name given to werewolves in fiction, but is also a medical term
referring to someone who is under the influence that they are a wolf (The Brain Bank North West
2012).
Some medical theories concerning the origin of werewolves are based around porphyria which is a
disease that effects the skin and nervous system, the same disease linked to the vampire myth. Some
victims of porphyria display the fang canine look caused by the corrosion of the gums. Furthermore,
following exposure to light, the healing blisters on the skin often grow a thin layer of hair (The Brain
Bank North West 2012).
Wolves are carriers of the lupine parvovirus (LPV), and it is suggested that the virus is responsible for
lycanthropy. LPV infected wolves are resistant to environmental trauma, including digestive enzymes,
making it much easier to spread through contaminated food and water sources. Wolves infect humans
through biting and after infection, there is a period of high fever, chills and other flu like symptoms,
and the victim is likely to experience extreme dehydration and itching as their metabolism and heart
rate increase (Hugo Pecos and Robert Lomax

The Influence Of Vampires
The popularity of vampires in films has increased dramatically over the past decade or so. Films such
as Van Helsing, Fright night and Twilight have all paved the way for a new type of vampire that
appeals to the audience for several different reasons. Leaving a lot of the traditional vampire traits
behind, these films have created a new attractive vampire and in the case of twilight, a vampire that
has feelings and emotions and does not want to drink human blood. These more modern vampires are
not only more appealing to the viewer; they are also signifiers of the modern culture in which we live
in today.
The film Van Helsing was directed by Stephen Sommers and stars Hugh Jackman playing a more
modern adaptation of the title character, Abraham ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Van Helsing, the three brides of Dracula are strikingly beautiful women and Jerry the vampire in
Fright Night is very handsome, and this fact is remarked by the female characters in the film on
several occasions. The fact that these new modern vampires are seen as very sexual and extremely
attractive individuals shows that the modern audience of the 21st century needs to be visually
stimulated in more ways than one. The saying sex sells does indeed apply here. Along with being
stimulated visually by the camera effects of these movies, audiences like looking at people who are
attractive. This attractiveness adds to the appeal of vampires even more as they are becoming sexier,
more enticing and even more alluring.
Taking the aforementioned points into account, another vampire phenomenon which has hit the 21st
century must be discussed. The Twilight Saga, which shows vampires in almost a completely different
light, has swept across the world and has gathered a very strong and loyal fan base. In Twilight,
vampires are seen to have feelings and emotion, and they also want to abstain from drinking human
blood, well the majority do. Here, vampires are stepping away from the traditional
horror/fantasy/adventure genre and are stepping closer to the romance

varieties of granite. Weathering of exposed granite is slow because weathering depends on whether
there is moisture or not. Edges and corners of joint granite blocks are more affected when weathering
occurs. Unweathered remains of granite turns into rounded boulders. Small natural depressions turn
into weather pit when water collects in a depression on granitic surfaces. A possible explanation for
weathering is that alternate wetting and drying along the pools that collect in the pans. Darker granitic
rocks are high in biotite and weather quicker than the lighter rocks. The foothills are located at the
west edge of the park and eastern summit area. They are remains of ancient rocks and sediments.
Evolution of the landscape is a big part of the geology just like the rocks themself. As the earth
became cooler, the sierra nevada mountains rose high enough for creating glaciers and mountain
icefields. The majority of Yosemite is made of plutonic, igneous rock. The plutonic rocks were formed
by intrusions of magma into older rocks. These are as old as 130 million years. Forms of plutonic
rocks in Yosemite are granite, granodiorite, tonalite, quartz monorite, and quartz monzodiorite.
Metamorphic rocks have been changed by pressure that can result in being buried in earth. There are 2

According to waste legislation business must establish a system that ensures waste producers or those

Differences And Similarities Between Jamaica And The...
Jamaica and the United Kingdom
There are a lot of different countries in the world. Some have many similarities and some have few
similarities. English is the international language and everyone should try and learn this language if
they want to communicate with the rest of the world. Most people think of the United Kingdom and
the United States of America, as the english speaking countries. This is not the only English speaking
countries, with English as the national language. In this text I will take a closer look at a country that
has english as the national language. I will look at the differences and similarities that this country has
with The United Kingdom. The country is surprisingly small and has a population of approximately 3
million people. It is a small island and the largest English speaking country in the Caribbean. It was a
British colony from 1665 to 1962 and that is probably one of the reasons why most of the people there
speak english. The country i am talking about is obviously Jamaica. ... Show more content on

Oscar Show Research Paper
Imagine four cute, cuddly, crime fighting penguins going on various adventures and completing
missions in order to protect their beloved home. They narrowly escape death and act as if they are
immortal. This is reality on the Penguins of Madagascar show, but not all penguins can be like these
special four, moreover be immortal. Penguins have different lifespans, and do not stay alive forever.
Throughout their lives, they give birth, but also see some of their closest friends pass away. For
example, the Falkland Islands started with 1000 penguins, but with the births and deaths each year, the
population is becoming hard to keep track of. This is where math comes in handy. A formula can be
used to calculate the population each year. If each couple has a chick every spring, and the penguins
only die due to natural causes, a formula to keep track of the population is 1000 multiplied by the
quantity of 1.2 raised to the power x. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If each of the 1000 penguins mate, 500 chicks will be born. Adding 1000 and 500 will get 1500, the
total number of penguins after birth. It is known that 0.2 of the penguins die, or 0.8 of them stay alive.
If 0.8 is multiplied by 1500, the total is 1200. This represents the penguin population for the first year
after the births and deaths are accounted for. Going through one more year can make the formula
clearer. The next year starts with a population of 1200. After mating, 600 chicks are born. Adding
1200 and 600 will get 1800. Multiplying this by 0.8 will get 1440 penguins, the population for the
second year. Taking a closer look, one can see that 1440 is 1200 multiplied by 1.2, and 1200 is 1000
multiplied by 1.2. Cleaning this up, one can conclude that 1440 is 1000 multiplied by 1.2 squared, and

The Monroe Doctrine... a Positive
The U.S benefitted Latin America through the implementation of the Monroe Doctrine, which helped
prevented further European colonization. Independence and sovereignty were in the U.S s intentions

European colonialism in, Africa, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic, to support my claim. Both the

A third incentive of European colonialism was nationalism. Europe wanted to prove its superiority by
colonizing and being in control of as much land as possible. During the period 1850 to 1871, the
nation state achieved its mature status in Europe. Nationalism clearly became the principal basis for
the organization of western civilization. This fact had earlier been demonstrated in England and in
France during the course of their political revolutions. In this period, it became manifest throughout
Europe. Nationalism is a primary motivating element, which determined the course of events in
France during the regime of Napoleon III, Italy where unification was achieved, Germany, where
unification was achieved, Russia where important steps towards modernization were taken, and the
United States, which experienced the Civil War, a war to preserve the union. [7] Nationalism is the
equivalent of American Patriotism and in the same way creates a sense of unification. It appeals to
every member of a nation and regardless of race, gender, social class; it was the promise of benefitting
the entire nation. There were also several incentives for the U.S to get involved in Latin America. The
main focus for the U.S was to keep communism out of the Western Hemisphere. There are several

Comparing The Impact Of Religion And Philosophy In India...
When comparing the impact of religion and philosophy in India with the impact of religion and
philosophy on these classical civilization s governments between 600 BCE and 600 CE, they were
similar in that they used religion and philosophy to support social and caste divisions, they stressed the
importance of following and obeying rules and the men who followed the teachings of the religion or
philosophy were on the top of the social hierarchy. This was because both China and India religion
and philosophy used religion to justify the social divisions like the caste system in India by talking
about reincarnation or the Confucian stress on the importance of obeying authority. Both India and
China also had a religion or philosophy that encouraged ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One social difference was that in India, religion didn t help the government unify their empire.
Hinduism was so diverse and had so many offshoots and sects like the Shaivites and the Vaishnavites
that it wasn t uniform enough to be shared across India and bring together the Indian subcontinent and
empire. This was distinct from China where Confucianism was fairly consistent in its teachings and
values. Because of this, all across China the idea of Confucianism linked various provinces and areas
like the vastly different North and South China together. A follower of Confucius from a remote
southern province would probably follow the same ideals that another follower of Confucius from the
North. This let the government unify the Chinese empire and bring together otherwise very different
people under one government. This difference was probably due to the fact that Hinduism had no one
founder to dispense core values and it was a polytheistic religion so there were many different gods to
follow while Confucianism was based on the teachings of one man, Confucius and followed his
individual teachings and the interpretations of them. Of the two, China was much more unified while
India remained incredibly diverse. However, both these governments and empires were more united
than the Classical Greek civilization which was composed of fiercely independent city states. A social
similarity was that these religions helped helped the government maintain social differences in society.
India had the highly inflexible caste system while China had a more lenient social pyramid. The caste
system was supported by the belief in reincarnation and karma in India where if you lived a good life
as a good person you would reincarnate into a good caste because of your karma so you were
ultimately responsible for your own caste. In China, Confucianism promoted the idea that those in
lower classes should stay there and respect their

The Faerie Queene And Thomas North s The Moral Philosophy...
In his chapter On the Systemic Properties of Recollection: Emboxed Narratives and the Limits of
Memory in Edmund Spenser s The Faerie Queene and Thomas North s The Moral Philosophy of Doni
, Donald Beecher argues that the brain prioritizes certain kinds of knowledge according to its own
architecture (143). Focusing on literature s potential power on the psyche, Beecher links the fictive
experience to planning and modified behavior in the reader (143). By piecing out the connection
between imaginative literature and lessons of virtue, Beecher asserts that writers must design their
work to move and modify memory so that what activates within the memory builds an ethically
improved subject (144). Linking the concept of memory and ethics to Spenser s The Faerie Queene
relies on a modality of cognition that serves to highlight the significant sections of the text meant to be
remembered (152). In other words, Spenser strives to leave a mental impression on the reader thus
pushing for psychological impact. In claiming then that memory is a builder of allegory , Beecher
asserts that The Faerie Queene implements certain rhetorical techniques in the form of memory
prompts to stimulate the mind, ultimately prodding the individual to reflect on their own behaviour
and thought (158).
Yet, while Beecher s argument focuses on engaging the memory of the reader my paper builds on this
assumption to look at the manner in which memory functions for the characters

Legalize Marijuana Marijuana is a drug that is spreading all around the world and is now proven to be
the most beneficial drug out there. More than 25 million Americans annually use it each year. If the
country legalized it then everyone would have more jobs available to go around such as harvesters,
dispensary clerks, distributors, or croppers. Thus, the unemployment rate is lowered and America
could make more money if they taxed it (Jack). Not only could they tax it but also save more money
because they would not have to lock up those people getting arrested every year. That way America
could lower the country s debt and then there is a lot less people in prisons. It would save the country
billions of dollars each year and make billions more each year. This country needs to tax anything they
can because taxing marijuana would bring in so much more revenue and America could also trade
with other countries. Marijuana has also proved to help cure diseases such as glaucoma, Alzheimer s,
and other cancer diseases. It is proven that it can help alleviate pain, regain their appetite, help in
slowing down tumor growth, help with dizziness, and help a patient go to sleep. THC, which is the
main ingredient in marijuana, helps a cancer patient to gain back their sense of smell and taste so that

Native Americans was described as barbarians, savages, and cannibals. The Europeans thought

Love In Hamlet And Ophelia
Love is different for each and every individual. It is so powerful that people cry, suffer pain, or even
risk their lives to save it. But there are other kinds of love: elusive love, tortured love, or even the love
that you feel for someone but cannot embrace it for fear of other, larger events. It is that kind of love
that seems to be the most prevalent in William Shakespeare s Hamlet, especially when it comes to
Hamlet s relationship with Ophelia, the daughter of King Claudius s advisor, the ever forgetful and
meddling Polonius. The love that Hamlet claimed he had for Ophelia was not only fabricated, but
unhealthy, which untimely led to her death. After a long meditation on the nature of being and death,
Hamlet catches sight of Ophelia. As she attempts to return some of the remembrances that Hamlet
gave when courting her, Hamlet caustically questions Ophelia s honesty. He denies ever having given
Ophelia anything and continues to erratically claim that he loved her once before declaring that he
never loved her at all. The problem here is that no one knows the exact intent of Hamlet as he claims
to love Ophelia amidst a number of happenings that questions how genuine his love towards Ophelia.
Not only does he doubt her honesty because he knew about her plan with Polonius and Claudius to
eavesdrop on him, he is unsure of her purity and her love for him and he tells her, get thee to a
nunnery rather than give birth to sinners ( ). Increasingly agitated, Hamlet condemns marriage itself,
saying that no more marriages should be allowed, before exiting the room and leaving Ophelia in
shambles. Looking deeper into the behavior that Hamlet demonstrates in this scene, there is
completely no love that he shares with Ophelia. In a way, Hamlet seems convinced that Ophelia is the
love of her life, but yet he has the behavior of insulting her and not giving her the priority that she
needs. His character portrays a man who cannot be connected to his self and this leads him to a
number of problems as regards the way he treats Ophelia. It is not just the feelings that Hamlet has
towards Ophelia that describes his love for her but his actions say a lot on the feeling that is in the
inside. Reaching to an extent that he can

Literary Analysis Of Absalom And Achiophel By John Dryden
Absalom and Achiophel : the wondrous satirical poem written by John Dryden himself which features
the many different ways of inviting humorous and satirical aspects of the Popish plot to light. George
Villiers, the second duke of Buckingham, was no exception for Dryden. So much so that the footnotes
of the couplets involving George even states that the section on George was The least political of the
satirical portraits in the poem (Noggle, 2226). Claiming that George Villiers, in Dryden s eyes, was
not fit to be a leader in the Popish plot was an extreme understatement as he painted an
overwhelmingly satirical image of how George was not only incapable of making an impact in the
Popish plot, but is upright a fool to society. Dryden, in the process of painting this satirical imagery,
also uses George as an example of showing consequentialism in action.
In Absalom and Achitophel Dryden begins with writing how George Villier only positive credential of

questions relating to the poem does the poem s speaker pity or admire Flick? Are readers meant to pity
or admire Flick?
The poem tells the story of the life of the former high school basketball standout, Flick Webb and his
fall from grace and fame. The speaker takes us on a journey through Flick s life, beginning with the
main street in town, developing to Flick s fall from fame to his lowly job, and then ends by telling us
of his menial daily habits. He was once the best basketball player in his area. However, he has since
his fall from grace he is now just a lowly gas attendant who checks oil, and changes flat tires for a
living.
Updike fills this poem with the appropriate diction, symbolic language, and references to the post
World War II era of the times. These elements combined have an illustrious effect on the tone and
meaning of this poem. The ESSO gas station of the era, the lemon phosphate drink, and Necco wafers
bring the nostalgia of the late 1940 s giving you that black and white photograph image in your mind
as you read. The winding road leading through town serves as a metaphor for Flick s life. Twisting and
turning past the high school, his days of glory, and stops sharply at the gas station where he will most
likely spend the rest of his life working. All of this spends

Tangerine Literary Analysis
Did you ever want to see the truth about everyone and understand what they mean? In the novel
Tangerine by Edward Bloor the themes seeing and truth is expressed. But I can see. I can see
everything. I can see things that Mom and Dad can t. Or won t. These are Paul s words and they
foreshadow what s to come. In other words, Paul s parents are underestimating his eyesight and
believe that Paul is only a handicap kid that needs assistance with everything. In addition to that Paul
has an older brother named Erik, he s the star of the show. Paul s parents think of Erik as the golden
child, but in reality Erik is a psychopath that wants to kill Paul, sadly only Paul sees Erik s inner
demon. All in all, Paul isn t relevant in his family and his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Normally people would think that they are mean people, just like how Joey did. On page 93 it states I
let you talk me into coming to this dump. and This place is like darkest Africa. Like the Amazon
jungle. Like we re learning to live among the natives here. To put it differently, Joey has been racist
since kids at Tangerine are mainly Latino others look down on them and only see them as
troublemakers who have gangs. Bloor used imagery to express how Tangerine was a dump . It states
The textbooks are old, too. Really old. And they have stuff written in them . You can imagine how
they would look, all worn out and messed up so the imagery helps support why Joey talked about how
the school was trash. But in reality Tangerine and the kids there aren t low lives and Paul sees that. It
even states If you re a War Eagle, then you re a War Eagle. You got brothers to back you up. Nobody s
gonna mess with you, not anyplace, not anytime. Do you know what I m sayin ? on page 77. The text
demonstrates how tight Paul was with the Tangerine kids, they aren t actual gangsters. Victor them
may be a little different then the people at Lake Windsor but there is more to a person than their outer

Fabliaux Style Writing In Geoffrey Chaucer s The...
A fabliaux is a funny story told in verses in the 13th century. Fabliaux were told by storytellers. The
short stories were known for their comical observations on things like religion, remaining pure until
marriage, and how women were treated. The fabliaux style was simple; they made fun of the everyday
lives of characters that were from the middle or lower classes. The storylines were often focused on
promiscuous women and foolish men. It usually showed someone getting cheated on. Also, there
usually was some sort of successful trick in the story. In Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, he
uses the fabliaux style writing to portray how they viewed women in the medieval period. He shows
how a fabliaux can actually be a satire of a romantic scene. Chaucer displays the fabliaux style writing
in the stories of The Reeve s Tale, The Merchant s Tale, and The Miller s Tale.
In the Reeve s Tale, John and Alan went to the miller s house to use the mill. The miller says they can
stay the night in his small house, but his family and the two college boys will all be staying in the
same room, but in different beds. The miller and his wife would be in one bed with a cradle for their
baby below it, John and Alan in another bed, and their daughter in the third. The two boys wanted
revenge on the miller because he had shortened them some flour; he decides to have sexual
intercourse three times with the daughter. Then, they move around the cradle which is used as the

network of japanese spies that were fully cable of causing sabotages that would disable the west coast

wartime hysteria and a lack of evidence to backup their findings.

A sage is one who is simple, tranquil, very open to life, intelligent, and reserved. He is not arrogant
and careless to such political affairs, does not seek fame, and does not discriminate opposites but
embraces them. The sage is indifferent to success or failure. He understands that life driven by self
centered ambition will never make sense, no matter how successful you are or with how many positive
externals you care to adorn it. When one does not let nature take its course, one may fail. He
understands that one may very much succeed but also has the ability to very much fail. To be a sage is
to be a man of peace. One avoids conflict, and steers away from violence. One is not intimidated of
death nor does one fear death. Life itself acquires meaning only when one satisfies ones spiritual
needs by living in total harmony with the Tao. He must seek Supreme Ultimate which is the sum of all
specific principles. The Supreme Ultimate really is nothing within itself, but concentration of
responsiveness to principle as it is immanent and real in the affairs of daily life. So to become a sage

The Importance Of Social Cohesion
Australia flourishes in an environment of a variety of cultures. We pertain to the ideas of acceptance
and understanding of individuals that have the intention to become apart of team Australia. But what
do we know Australia as? A community of equal citizens Abbott declares (The Conversation, 2014).
We can all assume that we as individuals idealise a country of equity and equality in all aspects of life,
whether it be race, gender, beliefs or political views. In a world where we want fairness and equality,
we coin the concept of social and cultural cohesion, which can be defined as the ties that hold people
together (Humanrights.gov.au, 2017). Moreover, social cohesion is regarded as a shared vision, and is
a process rather than an outcome (Scanlonfoundation.org.au, 2017). Jenson hypothesised a framework
that identifies the importances of social cohesion between individuals. He states that the disruption of
social cohesion effects dimensions of belonging, legitimacy, recognition, participation and inclusion
(Study.com, 2017). In contrast to this we come across an unwanted prejudice and discrimination
towards certain aspects of life. We define this as cultural conflict, the conflict that occurs when
different cultural values and beliefs clash with opposing values and beliefs (LeBaron, 2003). In
regards to Jenson s framework of social cohesion, cultural conflict revolves around the five
dimension. With disruption to this, views are altered into a more negative outlook,

  • 2. Military Spouses and the Challenges of Military Life Running head: MILITARY SPOUSES AND THE CHALLENGES OF MILITARY 1 Military Spouses and the Challenges of Military Life DANITZA JAMES Saint Leo University MILITARY SPOUSES AND THE CHALLENGES OF MILITARY Abstract Army life is unique to say the least. The subculture, with its own language, rules, acronyms and ways, is foreign to the general population. The Global war on Terrorism has brought more awareness and certainly more curiosity about Army life. (Krajeski, 2006, 2008, p. 5).Today, more than ever, the military spouse is a pioneer who travels to strange lands, rears her 2 family under nomadic conditions, and many times copes with the stress of surviving on his or her own. (Krajeski, 2006, 2008, p. 55). Some couples describe separation in moderation like a pause in a musical composition it enhances the whole (Krajeski, 2006, 2008, p. 55). There are many things that come into keeping a marriage together such as; love, respect, loyalty, communication, and understanding, but that all is part of being married to the military. MILITARY SPOUSES AND THE CHALLENGES OF MILITARY Military spouses role vary in ranks, from enlisted to officers they are all seen and approached in different ways because of the military rank his or her soldiers rank may be. The role of the officer s spouse encompasses a set of activities that are mostly traditional (Harrell, 2001, p. 59). Officer s spouses often are considered to be as elite as their soldier, depending on their rank, in fact an officer s wife becomes an extension of the officer (Harrell, 2001, p. 61). 5 The differences between officers and enlisted spouses also goes back to the 1700s where officers were although elected by their own man many of the officer ranks were filled by wealthy landowners and the enlisted ranks were filled by the serving class (Alt Stone, 1991, p. 2). ... • 3. The Importance Of Minority Rights All human beings are entitled to equality and justice through our legal system and the state must accommodate to the rights of the minority groups. Some minority rights seem to conflict with liberal rights, for an example forcing women to stay home. (Freedman, 30 October 2017). In this essay, I will argue that the state should not endorse rights that infringes with the equality of the rights of a minority, therefore inhibiting the state s ability to treat all of its citizens with equal concern and respect. Bill 62 and African Americans are two examples of the majority not being tolerant of the minorities rights. Achieving equality for all citizens in a society requires granting special rights to minorities in a liberal state. Liberal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They also believe that certain parts of the world practice the religion minorities are practicing and they can practice there. They are not open to viewing the religion or rights of minority groups. A state ran by a majority could very easily use power they don t have against the minority rights. An example of the government misusing their power is the history of African American being used involuntarily as slaves and prevented from integrating into the institutions of the majority culture through racial segregation (Kymlicka 360). Africa American may have the greatest injustices of all the ethnocultural groups, mainly because of their historical mistreatment by the majority. Denial of the rights of certain minority groups cause conflict between groups and the rights of the minorities. Equality within a society means the delivering of minority rights. Multiculturalism in fact fails because everyone does not share a common set of beliefs and interest as the rest of the citizens. Since a society already has an official language and culture, the state still isn t entitled to force this on the citizens. It is up to them which culture they choose to practice. Over the past years, the difficulty for the state to given minorities rights have decreased in the sense that there are awareness groups to make the minority groups more ... • 4. The Spratly Islands Dispute Swaine s article makes the point to ask whether man made features should be allowed territorial integrity, but doesn t answer the question. His solutions to the Spratly Islands dispute all assume that China will be able to claim EEZs and territorial waters around Mischief Reef and its man made features. However, what these features are, exactly, can t be overlooked when examining this issue. China began by dredging and dumping sand on a small portion of the slightly submerged reefs and, over the past few years, have transformed it into a full blown and developed island. The sand has been cemented and paved in order to ensure sturdiness so that vehicles could be transported and buildings erected. The Chinese are seeking to reinforce their claims to the Spratly Islands, rocky outcrops in the South China Sea, by dredging and building installations there such as lighthouses and a runway. Having structures on a sandbar doesn t necessarily give it territorial integrity, however. Though China claims ownership of this part of the Spratly Islands, it is not the only claimant. Vietnam, among others, may even have a better claim, as its coast is closer in nautical miles. If simply dumping sand and paving afforded territorial rights to a country, then the United States could easily build man made islands in every sea and harbor in the world in order to have a monopoly on naval activity. The ridiculousness of this example proves why China will not be able to gain EEZs around the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Discrimination In The Movie Bullies Think of how different the world would be if we did not accept other s views. How would that affect us? Three creators thought about this topic and show how the world could be. They showed different situations through a movie, an article, and a court hearing. Without accepting other views violence and discrimination would be inevitable and could cause much worse problems. Today acceptance of views is practiced by a large majority of the population around the world. Opinions on people or objects should not be dependent on beliefs or contrast of views is a recurring message. Throughout the film Bullied directed by Bill Brummel, Jamie came out as a homosexual and the other boys did not like that. They physically hurt him by hitting, kicking and even peeing on him just because he was different. Many classmates at Ashland Middle School saw him as gay that was enough for some campus bullies (1:54 2:03). This statement shows the discrimination against Jamie just on the fact that he is different. Jamie was against the bullies because they ridiculed him. The bullies were against Jamie because he was gay. I just know that it hurt a lot to hear those words every day (2:11 2:13) said Jamie about being bullied every day. The quote by Jamie shows the difficult times and feelings not only him but all people can accumulate if discriminated against. By the end of the story, Jamie defended himself by putting a lawsuit, which he won, on the school system for failure to oblige to complaints from Jamie and his family. This film can show what some people go through in life without acceptance of differences. Again implying the severe importance of acceptance of differences. In the article Towards a True Refuge the author, Aung San Suu Kyi discusses problems we have we discrimination and how that affects immigration and communications with other countries. The greatest threats to global security today come not from the economic deficiencies of the poorest nations but from religious, racial (or tribal) and political dissensions (lines 4 6). Aung San Suu Kyi wrote this statement to say global security is merely a fear of differences in cultures. The nation is against immigrants and others because they did not feel safe around ... • 7. Coastline Erosion Research Paper The very nature of our ocean is to rise and fall, to sway with the pull of the moon, and to churn violently as the winds howl. The ocean has been this way since its inception and it will continue to do so as the arrow of time marches on. There have been cycles in which the nature of the ocean has wavered, but an equilibrium is kept, and life adapts. However, in our grotesque folly, we have decided that this should no longer be the case. We have changed the nature of our oceans so suddenly that life is crushed by force exerted through this change. Temperatures rise without regard to ecosystem or environment. Glaciers sweat profusely from the bombardment of heat. Sea levels rise. The importance of the oceans to the world at large cannot be understated. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the sea rises, the waves push more into the coast and drag the coastal deposits back into the ocean. Similar to hill sides and mountain sides that experience erosion when they have low or no existing vegetation to protect from the eroding effects of the weather, coastlines face the issue of erosion as well. If this were to happen, the recession of coastline ecosystem may lead to more damaging effects due to the sea and its weather on the nearby land area and people. Fortunately, the effects of coastline erosion can be somewhat mitigated. With regards to diminishing coasts, there will be a massive displacement of people. As the sea level rises, the current coastlines will recede. Unfortunately, there are large portions of people who live near coasts. This is especially true on islands. With the sea level rising, we will need to find ways to take care of the people that will leave the area and the large amount of damage done by the encroaching coast line. There are remedies to these issues, one of which is build up fortifications against the sea rise. The sea rise can be mitigated through various means. One of these is to build a wall that will keep water out of areas that are near the sea and in danger of flooding or destruction due to sea level ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

You could think a person is evil, or you could think he/she is good, by their behaviour and nature. This thesis paper will show you that it is a point of view. It includes sources, primarily from the book, A Wrinkle In Time . Some other sources are Ramayan , A Mauryan Adventure and Wonder . Starting off with the first source, A Wrinkle In Time . This is the primary source, as the statement arose from this book. From the chapter, IT , it was seen that IT , thought by controlling the people of Camazotz, he was doing the right thing. On page 884 885, he says that Lakshmana cut of the nose of Ravana s sister, Surpnakha. To take revenge, Ravana thought by kidnapping Sita and making Rama and Lakshmana pay for their doings, he was doing the right thing. The whole of Ayodhya, though, thought he was being evil by kidnapping Sita. This means that, from a point of view, taking revenge, on someone, is good. From a different point of view, a revenge an be an evil thing to commit to. This leads us to our third secondary source, from the book, A Mauryan Adventure by Subadhra Sen Gupta. Kamalika and Kartik think of killing the king to take revenge of his father as the king didn t care of his father s death. Kartik s sister Madhura stops him from doing such an evil thing. This again shows that there are different points of view on good and evil. Kartik thinks it is good, but Madhura thinks it s evil. This shows good and evil are just a point of view. To conclude, you can say that good and evil are just a point of view, a mere shadow, as of the many reason shown in various books. Although all of these may be fictional or mythical, they all implement the same thing; true life. You can find these in everyday occourances, all the fights you had or will have, was just the cause of a point of view. Wait a second, think, and act. To sing a song, you must know all its ... Essay on The Process Of An Internal Combustion Engine Process Essay Process of a 4 stroke Internal Combustion Engine A common phrase that is heard whilst growing up is curiosity killed the cat . This phrase might be true but; ingenuity brought the cat back . Having a mindset in which giving up is never an option has plagued most inventors of the modern day, especially a high school drop out named Nikolaus August Otto, born in 1832. Otto was responsible for the development and improvement of the 4 stroke motor that is used today in just about every automobile on the road. Many people drive cars but fail to realize how they work, and don t try to learn about engines because they think it is complex, and not an easy concept to grasp. Air, fuel, spark, and combustion are the premise ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the next step the air travels into the combustion chamber (cylinder), where it is mixed with the other components of combustion. Equally important as the air, is the fuel going into the cylinder. Fuel starts off in the gas tank of the car and then gets pumped into the fuel lines by the fuel pump. The fuel goes through the fuel lines and into the fuel rail. Attached to the fuel rail are electronically controlled injectors (one per cylinder), which are controlled by the mass air sensor. The mass air senor regulates how much fuel is necessary to mix with the air to achieve the ideal air to fuel ratio. The injectors spray into the cylinder at synchronized times mixing with air and eventually resulting in combustion. The final and most important steps of the Internal Combustion Engine are the movements of the pistons. At this point in the process fuel, and air are both present inside the chamber and are combined into a ratio, this is called the air fuel ratio, short AFR. There are four motions of each piston; they are in perfect balance and harmony, much like watching an orchestra perform. These motions (strokes) are detailed as follows: • On the intake stroke, the intake valve has opened. (The intake valve is the opening that the air and fuel are released into the cylinder) The piston is moving down, and a mixture of air and vaporized fuel is being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Analysis Of Santa Clause Is Coming To Town The song, Santa Claus is Coming to Town is a very happy and cheerful song that is played during the month of December to bring out the Christmas spirit in people. The history behind it is how two men got their big break and made one of the most played Christmas songs of all time. The song was originally written by John Frederick Coots and composed by Haven Gillespie on October 1933. Gillespie was in charge of expressing his gift of writing children s song lyrics while Coots came up with the tune that caught the attention of young children. The two came up with the song while riding a subway car in New York. The two men had a masterpiece in their hands, but needed someone to produce it. Many artists passed on the song because they didn t believe the it would hit big on the charts and would be difficult to sell, especially since it was a song for kids. Coots at the time was a writer for Eddie Cantor and tried to persuade him to sing the song live on his radio station. Cantor was undecided on whether to sing it, but his wife eventually convinced him to give the song a chance. He ended up performing it live on November 1934 on his radio station and brought huge publicity to the song. After it was aired on the radio station, the song blew up. People from all over were requesting to hear the song over and over again. It sold over 400,00 copies and 300,00 of those were sold within the first 24 hours. • 11. Decision Making Process Analysis Normally people do not break down how they make decisions, they just decide. But, for people who are making decisions for a larger group, knowing the process could be helpful. The first step in the process is to identify the problem by fully understanding and gathering all the information of the problem. Secondly, you want to think of alternatives or other options for handling the issue. Thirdly, you want to access or evaluate all the alternatives and consider the possible outcome. Finally, you go forward with the decision and evaluate the outcome (Kinicki and Williams, 2016). These steps are helpful and critical when making decisions for large groups or an organization. Along with the steps to decision are the four styles of decision making; they are directive, analytical, conceptual, and behavioral (Kinicki and Williams, 2016). Directive is used by leaders who decides quickly. They make decisions on the basis of a relatively small amount of information. Analytical managers make decisions by researching lots data and having alternatives choices. The conceptual style is notable in managers with the need for recognition and success. In L. Frank Baum s, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the quest of the minor characters, the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion, contribute to their individual discoveries of inner strength. The self acclaimed unintelligent Scarecrow demonstrates his smarts and resourcefulness multiple times during the voyage to the Land of Oz but does not acknowledge his full capability until the end of the trip. Similarly, the Tin Woodman, despite the lack of a physical heart, does not realize his compassionate acts throughout the journey prove that he is truly a kind, sensitive man. Whereas the Cowardly Lion is the bravest and courageous out of all the characters throughout the entire expedition. The tests and trials the minor characters endure on their quest cause each of their individual characters to grow to their full potential, finding the strength from within they lack. The Scarecrow is oblivious to his own personal growth and development throughout the journey. Before he faces challenges on the way to the Land of Oz, he is initially very soft spoken and unconfident in himself. He believes that, brains are the only things worth having in this world, no matter whether one is a crow or a man, (Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Baum 47). This statement of his value for intelligence demonstrates his inability to see the intellect within himself. The desperate longing for a brain shows how prior to the journey the Scarecrow does not obtain any inner strength to look highly upon himself. As the travels continue, his actions prove his intelligence but still, he does not acknowledge the fact. The Scarecrow is a natural born leader with his quick, rational decision making skills. He instructs the Tinman to, build a raft, so we can float to the other side, and as the Tinman does as he is told, the Scarecrow finds, on the river bank a tree full of fine fruit, (Baum 82). The actions of both Dionysius and Socrates, in both Bacchae and Phaedrus respectively, are driven by their personal ethics and beliefs in justice. Bacchae, a Greek tragedy written by Euripides, tells the story of the Greek God Dionysus s arrival to ancient city of Thebes, and the city s reaction towards him and his strange religion. Phaedrus on the other hand is a dialogue, written by Plato, about a series of arguments between Socrates and Phaedrus starting with what makes a good speech, journeying into the fundamental understanding of the universe itself. Dionysius here is essentially listing the injustices he as suffered by the city of Thebes, promising to make undo any harm he causes after being accepted, warns that his rejection will result in his wrath, and finally disguises himself as preacher to find willing followers. The most important line in this quote is the last sentence I ve transformed myself, assumed a mortal shape, altered my looks, so I resemble any human being (70 73) , in that he wants people to choose to follow him out of their own free will, rather than forcing or scaring the people into compliance. Margaret Paston, an heiress of the Mautby family who married the lawyer John Paston I in 1440, wrote many of these letters. This particular letter, written in a plain and conversational style expected of personal correspondences of this period , deals with the secret marriage of Margaret s daughter Margery Paston to the family bailiff Richard Calle. It was written September tenth, 1469, to Sir John Paston II, Margaret s son, who was working as a Justice of the Peace in Norfolk . Margaret acted as a business partner with her husband as he was often away working in London. The letters she wrote to him often detail the ways she is upholding her role as wife and mother, as well as casting dispersions on those who fail to live up to society s standards for conduct. Lycanthropy is a clinical name given to werewolves in fiction, but is also a medical term referring to someone who is under the influence that they are a wolf (The Brain Bank North West 2012). Some medical theories concerning the origin of werewolves are based around porphyria which is a disease that effects the skin and nervous system, the same disease linked to the vampire myth. Some victims of porphyria display the fang canine look caused by the corrosion of the gums. Furthermore, following exposure to light, the healing blisters on the skin often grow a thin layer of hair (The Brain Bank North West 2012). Hinduism was so diverse and had so many offshoots and sects like the Shaivites and the Vaishnavites that it wasn t uniform enough to be shared across India and bring together the Indian subcontinent and empire. This was distinct from China where Confucianism was fairly consistent in its teachings and values. Because of this, all across China the idea of Confucianism linked various provinces and areas like the vastly different North and South China together. A follower of Confucius from a remote southern province would probably follow the same ideals that another follower of Confucius from the North. This let the government unify the Chinese empire and bring together otherwise very different people under one government. This difference was probably due to the fact that Hinduism had no one founder to dispense core values and it was a polytheistic religion so there were many different gods to follow while Confucianism was based on the teachings of one man, Confucius and followed his individual teachings and the interpretations of them. Of the two, China was much more unified while India remained incredibly diverse. However, both these governments and empires were more united than the Classical Greek civilization which was composed of fiercely independent city states. A social similarity was that these religions helped helped the government maintain social differences in society. India had the highly inflexible caste system while China had a more lenient social pyramid. The caste system was supported by the belief in reincarnation and karma in India where if you lived a good life as a good person you would reincarnate into a good caste because of your karma so you were ultimately responsible for your own caste. In his chapter On the Systemic Properties of Recollection: Emboxed Narratives and the Limits of Memory in Edmund Spenser s The Faerie Queene and Thomas North s The Moral Philosophy of Doni , Donald Beecher argues that the brain prioritizes certain kinds of knowledge according to its own architecture (143). Focusing on literature s potential power on the psyche, Beecher links the fictive experience to planning and modified behavior in the reader (143). By piecing out the connection between imaginative literature and lessons of virtue, Beecher asserts that writers must design their work to move and modify memory so that what activates within the memory builds an ethically improved subject (144). Linking the concept of memory and ethics to Spenser s The Faerie Queene relies on a modality of cognition that serves to highlight the significant sections of the text meant to be remembered (152). In other words, Spenser strives to leave a mental impression on the reader thus pushing for psychological impact. In claiming then that memory is a builder of allegory , Beecher asserts that The Faerie Queene implements certain rhetorical techniques in the form of memory prompts to stimulate the mind, ultimately prodding the individual to reflect on their own behaviour and thought (158). It is that kind of love that seems to be the most prevalent in William Shakespeare s Hamlet, especially when it comes to Hamlet s relationship with Ophelia, the daughter of King Claudius s advisor, the ever forgetful and meddling Polonius. The love that Hamlet claimed he had for Ophelia was not only fabricated, but unhealthy, which untimely led to her death. After a long meditation on the nature of being and death, Hamlet catches sight of Ophelia. As she attempts to return some of the remembrances that Hamlet gave when courting her, Hamlet caustically questions Ophelia s honesty. He denies ever having given Ophelia anything and continues to erratically claim that he loved her once before declaring that he never loved her at all. The problem here is that no one knows the exact intent of Hamlet as he claims to love Ophelia amidst a number of happenings that questions how genuine his love towards Ophelia. Not only does he doubt her honesty because he knew about her plan with Polonius and Claudius to eavesdrop on him, he is unsure of her purity and her love for him and he tells her, get thee to a nunnery rather than give birth to sinners ( ). Increasingly agitated, Hamlet condemns marriage itself, saying that no more marriages should be allowed, before exiting the room and leaving Ophelia in shambles. Looking deeper into the behavior that Hamlet demonstrates in this scene, there is completely no love that he shares with Ophelia. In a way, Hamlet seems convinced that Ophelia is the love of her life, but yet he has the behavior of insulting her and not giving her the priority that she needs. Current initiatives that Tuality has in the works for 2015 is to improve diversity of its workforce and, therefore, improve its service to the minority population in the area. Based on the Community Health Needs Assessment Report, the population configuration of whom Tuality serves averages roughly 25% Latino patients (Tuality Healthcare, 2014). To better serve those patients, Tuality must attract, hire and retain more minority employee in direct patient care professions such as physicians and nurses that will reflect a better match to the patient base. The third pillar, community reputation for unparalleled value, is perhaps the largest hurdle to overcome. It is hard to expect patients to use Tuality if they do not believe they will get good value for their money and have positive health outcomes. Because of being a small organization, Tuality has to work harder to achieve similar outcomes of patient satisfaction than its larger Portland area counterparts. • 37. Literary Analysis Of Absalom And Achiophel By John Dryden Absalom and Achiophel : the wondrous satirical poem written by John Dryden himself which features the many different ways of inviting humorous and satirical aspects of the Popish plot to light. George Villiers, the second duke of Buckingham, was no exception for Dryden. So much so that the footnotes of the couplets involving George even states that the section on George was The least political of the satirical portraits in the poem (Noggle, 2226). Claiming that George Villiers, in Dryden s eyes, was not fit to be a leader in the Popish plot was an extreme understatement as he painted an overwhelmingly satirical image of how George was not only incapable of making an impact in the Popish plot, but is upright a fool to society. Dryden, in the process of painting this satirical imagery, also uses George as an example of showing consequentialism in action. In Absalom and Achitophel Dryden begins with writing how George Villier only positive credential of being part of the popish plot is that he comes from his royalty in Buckingham as his other credentials lack in uniqueness when compared to the other members of society. He eludes that George Villier became a chief of the Popish plot because he was one of the princes of the land (543). Ironically, however, this is followed up by Dryden describing him as A man so various, that he seemed to be / Not one, but all mankind s epitome (545 546). Are readers meant to pity or admire Flick? The poem tells the story of the life of the former high school basketball standout, Flick Webb and his fall from grace and fame. He was once the best basketball player in his area. However, he has since his fall from grace he is now just a lowly gas attendant who checks oil, and changes flat tires for a living. Updike fills this poem with the appropriate diction, symbolic language, and references to the post World War II era of the times. These elements combined have an illustrious effect on the tone and meaning of this poem. The ESSO gas station of the era, the lemon phosphate drink, and Necco wafers bring the nostalgia of the late 1940 s giving you that black and white photograph image in your mind as you read. • 40. Fabliaux Style Writing In Geoffrey Chaucer s The... A fabliaux is a funny story told in verses in the 13th century. Fabliaux were told by storytellers. The short stories were known for their comical observations on things like religion, remaining pure until marriage, and how women were treated. The fabliaux style was simple; they made fun of the everyday lives of characters that were from the middle or lower classes. The storylines were often focused on promiscuous women and foolish men. It usually showed someone getting cheated on. Also, there usually was some sort of successful trick in the story. In Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales, he uses the fabliaux style writing to portray how they viewed women in the medieval period. He shows how a fabliaux can actually be a satire of a romantic scene. Chaucer displays the fabliaux style writing in the stories of The Reeve s Tale, The Merchant s Tale, and The Miller s Tale. In the Reeve s Tale, John and Alan went to the miller s house to use the mill. We pertain to the ideas of acceptance and understanding of individuals that have the intention to become apart of team Australia. But what do we know Australia as? A community of equal citizens Abbott declares (The Conversation, 2014). We can all assume that we as individuals idealise a country of equity and equality in all aspects of life, whether it be race, gender, beliefs or political views. In a world where we want fairness and equality, we coin the concept of social and cultural cohesion, which can be defined as the ties that hold people together (Humanrights.gov.au, 2017). Moreover, social cohesion is regarded as a shared vision, and is a process rather than an outcome (Scanlonfoundation.org.au, 2017). Jenson hypothesised a framework that identifies the importances of social cohesion between individuals. He states that the disruption of social cohesion effects dimensions of belonging, legitimacy, recognition, participation and inclusion (Study.com, 2017). In contrast to this we come across an unwanted prejudice and discrimination towards certain aspects of life. We define this as cultural conflict, the conflict that occurs when different cultural values and beliefs clash with opposing values and beliefs (LeBaron, 2003). In regards to Jenson s framework of social cohesion, cultural conflict revolves around the five dimension. With disruption to this, views are altered into a more negative outlook, ...
