Description Of A Shopping Holiday
A Shopping Holiday Are you hungry for some healthful eats? Craving some good wine? Maybe
you re just hankering for a great deal. Then let s take a stroll down to the docks and pay a visit to
old Trader Joe. If you re lucky enough to find parking it seems most Trader Joes have rather
limited parking lots you re on your way to an adventure in grocery shopping. As you pass
through the magical sliding glass doors, you enter another world, a fascinating bustle of
excitement, smiles and wholesome nutrition. This self proclaimed Unique Grocery Store is
certainly unlike any other vendor of goods you will find. Compared to your ordinary Ralph s,
Von s or Costco, Trader Joe s offers its customers, and its employees, a fully realized theme
environment, not unlike what one might find at a store designed by the Walt Disney Company.
As you enter the brightly lit space guests are overwhelmed with a very welcoming, island
atmosphere: flowers, Tiki carvings, hand painted signage, and some stores even have aisles with
thatched roof awnings supported by heavy wooden poles to ensure you get the idea. This theming
and design takes customers out of the real world and into an over seas adventure. While walking
around the store, selecting your rather common loaves of bread or chicken breasts, you get the
drawing impression that you are on a very uncommon tropical vacation. In our fast paced, modern
environment here in Southern California, any respite from the madness is a welcomed

The Chile Of Peru And Chile
For the fault zone that I chose to research for this project, I chose the Peru Chile Trench, also
known as the Chile Subduction Megathrust and as the Atacama Trench. It is called that because
the area between Peru and Chile is called The Atacama , and such was the plate named. The Peru
Chile trench is located along the western coast of Peru and Chile. It marks the zone where the
Nazca plate is being subducted beneath the South American plate and is approximately 3,666 miles
long. (Britannica, p.1)
Located on the fault are sediments, amongst them are turbidites. Turbidites are areas of sediment
are deposited in the deep ocean. There are also oceanic deposits, volcanic ash, siliceous oozes, and
primary dolomites, which are a formation of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, there are many seismic events that have taken place on our geologic timeline and at the
same time shaped our historic timeline.
The most recent large scale earthquake along the Peru Chile Plate was the 16 September
earthquake, which happened in 2015. It measured an M 8.3, one of the largest on record. 5 were
killed, and over 1 million were evacuated from greatly affected areas. However, compared to other
earthquakes that have taken place in Chile, this one was moderate.
In 2010, an 8.8 Mw earthquake shook Chile. It was approximately 200 miles southwest of Chile
and was approximately 375 miles long. A 2014 study attributed the quake to immense water
pressure located between the two plates. The region was stricken by strong aftershocks for months
after the quake, many of a magnitude of 5.0 Mw or greater.
The Tsunami that took place after the initial quake was caused by a portion of seabed rupturing
upwards, and displacing a large portion of the water being displaced. This water traveled at 450
miles, at 8 feet tall, to the Chilean and Peruvian coast. Early viewers of the tsunami later reported
waves being up to 10 feet tall. This rupture was believed to be caused by 2 unusually dense pieces
of seabed that had been previously undetected by scientists, and consequently caused a large
displacement of water. There were also small ruptures of seismic

Before Hitler s Military Background Before He Was Fuehrer
Hitler was the Fuhrer of Germany. So what was his life before he was Fuehrer? Hitler started out
as a regular everyday person, although later he was not. So what was his childhood like? Why
was his military background before he was Fuehrer? And finally, Why did he loathe and despise
Jewish people?
At the start, Adolf Hitler had a very bad, and influential childhood. Hitler was born in Braunau,
Austria Hungary in 1889. His father was a low level customs official, and wanted his son, Hitler,
to join him as a customs official, but Hitler instead, wished to be in Fine Arts, of which his father
very much disliked. Hitler s brother Edmund, passed away when Hitler was 11 in 1900. 3 short
years later, his father also died, in 1903. Consequently, 2 years later in 1905, Hitler s mother
allowed him to drop out of school to pursue the Fine Arts. After leaving school he, Spent the next
three years wandering around Linz attending the theater and spending time in the library . His
mother, Klara Polzl, died 1907 leaving Hitler with no family. Hitler applied to the Academy of

Essay on Reconstruction and Industrialization
Reconstruction and Industrialization After the Civil War, the nation witnessed two major social
economic movements: Reconstruction and Industrialization, which changed the country
completely and made it one of the greatest industrialized countries in the world. However, it
changed not only the country, but also, the society, its way of life and traditions. The effort to
rebuild the southern states and restore the Union was known as Reconstruction, a period that lasted
from 1865 to 1877. Several different plans for Reconstruction emerged during and after the war.
Much debate about differing plans centered on who would control Reconstruction the President or
Congress. Lincoln had wanted to adopt a mild and forgiving policy... Show more content on

In addition to addressing several civil rights issues, the amendment prohibited many former
Confederate officers and government officials from voting. This period of Radical Reconstruction
did not bring much change in the South. Although blacks began to participate in political life, they
met tremendous hostility. Some Southern whites adopted a policy of terror to keep the freedmen
from becoming too independent. Because blacks had no jobs or land they became sharecroppers in
a kind of economic slavery. Grant won election in 1868, and Congress became free to follow its
Radical Reconstruction policies. It successfully proposed the Fourteenth and the Fifteenth
Amendments. However, a major depression occurred in 1873. In addition, public attention was
diverted by the graft and corruption in President Grant s cabinet. Corruption in the Grant
administration weakened the political strength of the Republican Party. In addition, by the early
1870s, all but a handful former Confederates could vote again. Most of these white southern males
now voted Democratic in reaction to Radical Republican Reconstruction. For most of the next
century, the Democratic party would dominate voting in the South, giving rise to the term solid
South. The emergence of the solid South gave the Democrats greater power in politics at the
national level. In 1876, Democrats nominated Tilden, the governor of New York, to run for

Ethical Issues with the Ncaa
There are several ethical issues in the news lately about the treatment college athletes are receiving
compared to the non athletic students of universities. Is the practice of favoring athletes and
bending the rules in the favor of universities to enable the best college sports stars to play ethical?
Two major ethical issues that have been in the public eye as of late is cheating and grade tampering,
and recruiting tactics. Both of these actions are unethical, but it still isn t stopping universities
around the country to discontinue in these manners. Cheating and grade tampering is not allowed
in any way for a normal student of a university. Why are teachers and administrators helping and
giving alternate academic options to athletes?... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I don t know many guys my age who could refuse that situation. But in reality, those recruiting
tactics are not morally correct. Not only is it not fair to other schools looking for their next
sports star, but athletes will be coming to a university for all the wrong reasons. In conclusion, it
is a fact that athletes, especially at larger universities across the country get special treatment in
regards to academic issues and lifestyle. Universities will go to any extent to protect their players
from being academically ineligible to play, and seems they will do anything to get the best
recruits in the country to give their team an advantage. It is hard for the NCAA to enforce strict
rules, especially academically because schools have academic freedom which enables universities
to make their own classroom policies. The NCAA asks, If a certain institution permits grade
changes for students up through and even after the final exam, how do you hold athletes to a
different standard? In reality, it is almost impossible to hold athletes to a different standard, and as
long as this loop hole exists, colleges will be using any method enticing athletes to come to their
school and continue to play through their college career, regardless of their academic status. It is
unethical, but until NCAA rules change, who can dictate these procedures are not allowed?

Theme Of The Dream In A Midsummer Night s Dream
Unlike modern society, in the past, especially in Elizabethan times, your privileges were not as
widespread. This included your decision to marry the spouse of your choice. In Elizabethan
England, you married the spouse of your parents choice or faced harsh legal consequences. This
could include: death, exilement, or becoming a nun. Now ,in modern society, parents still have
expectations for their children s spouse. If their children disobey, they may face personal
consequences, but in America and England, there is legal freedom to choose your spouse. An
example of this is the article Bringing Home the Wrong Race . In this article, an Asian man brings
home a Caucasian girl. At first his parents disapprove, but with time she is accepted. In contrast, in
A Midsummer Night s Dream, Hermia is in love with Lysander, but her father disapproves and will
not budge. These three stories, A Midsummer NIght s Dream, Bringing Home the Wrong Race ,
and Women in Tudor England, all have similarities and differences that make them alike but
unique. Despite their creation being centuries apart, these stories have a lot in common. The main
point that is shared between the three is that children bring home a boyfriend or girlfriend that
their parents do not approve of. In A Midsummer Night s Dream, Hermia is in love with Lysander,
but her father, Egeus, disapproves of this and wants her to marry Demetrius because in those times
the parents had the legal final say in their children s

Minoan Curricular
The horns of a bull appear as a reoccurring theme in Minoan cultic practices and images. The term
horns of consecration was an expression given to these symbols by Sir Arthur Evans to describe
the ever present images of horns in Minoan sanctuaries, architecture, and art. Religion played a
major role in Minoan society with animal sacrifices, music, dance and prayer occurring in caves,
on mountain peaks, and in local villas. A central part of the festivals was the sacrificing of a bull
to signify the connection of man to nature. Peak sanctuaries first give rise to the image of horns,
but as palaces became popular, the adoption of horns helped legitimize the palace s power. The
horns of consecration played a major role in Minoan culture, but... Show more content on

However, one theory claims the horns have no connection to the bull at all, but rather the horns
are a derivative of the Egyptian symbol illustrating the horizon and mountains. In 1934, Joseph
Hazzidakis published his research on the villas at Tylissos and his discovery of four different
Minoan horns. Along with this discovery, Hazzidakis also paralleled the shape of the horns to
the Egyptian symbol of the horizon. Additionally, Hazzidakis references the seal stone found at
Chania, published by Evans, as depicting a divine image due to a male figure shown floating
over the horns of consecration with a winged goat and a daemon on his sides which can be seen
in figure 3. Hazzidakis claims the lack of a rendering of a sun deity in Minoan art because the
deity may be so common that a depiction was unnecessary for the Minoans. Instead, the image of
the horns signified the deity and therefore no images of a sun deity were ever created. Yet,
Hazzidakis was not the only one to theorize the correlation between the Egyptian symbol and the
Minoan horns of consecration. Watrous and MacGillivary also made similar interpretations of the
evidence, but none of these ideas had any effect on scholarly articles until recently (Banou 2008

Institutional Environment as a Determinant of Chinese...
Institutional Environment as a Determinant of Chinese Private Firm Export BehaviorsпјљDoes
productivity counter the effect of institutional environment?
We introduce institutional environment as a measure of the degree to which policies and institutes
in one region differ from those in another region in china, where market are distorted across space
and region[1]. We employ a modified heterogeneous firmmodel developed by Mayer and Melitz et
al(2011)[12] to examine whether such institutional environment differences affect the firms export
behavior. Employing data for china firm level exports in 29 province for which measures of
institutional environment can be constructed, we find that better institutional environment
enhances firm s export behavior. This results holds for the low level of financial constrains firms,
but are reversed by the con export effect of productivity in the aggregate firms and the high level of
financial constraints firms. Productivity is found to exert a con export effect that completely offsets
the trade enhancing effects of institutional environment.
I. Introduction
Despite a voluminous literature on the impact of firm productivity on export behaviorпјЊthe
effects that institutional environment differences among regions may have on firm s export
behavior and the extent to which productivity may counter these effects have received little
attention. Institutional environment difference is defined as the degree to which policies and

takes him seriously and complies to do whatever Strasser desires. For example, Strasser tells
Renault that he overestimates blundering Americans. Renault responds, Do not underestimate
American blundering, they blundered all the way into Berlin in 1918. The German general quickly

example displaying the audiences sympathetic views.
Casablanca s love afflictions render that true love equals self sacrifice. The married Victor and

behind why she left him and shows no interest helping them escape Casablanca although he has

Why Is Karl Marx Considered Radical
Karl Marx and His Radical Views
Karl Marx[i] Karl Marx is among the most important and influential of all modern philosophers
who expressed his ideas on humans in nature. According to the University of Dayton, the human
person is part of a larger history of life on this planet. Through technology humans have the power
to have an immense effect on that life. [ii] The people of his time found that the impact of the
Industrial Revolution would further man s success within this world and would ensure his success
as a species. Marx was extremely radical in finding that this was a positive impact on humans in
nature.

Marx believed the workers were not collecting the benefits of the Industrial Revolution. Marx
says that men are forced to work for natural survival. Marx also suggests that working men only
have time to engage in the basic animalistic tendencies of a quest for survival. He says that man
becomes alienated from nature and other humans as well. Marx is basically saying that man lived
day by day, by day and he has nothing else to really live for.
Marx thought that as the workers grew stronger, they would eventually rebel against the
organization. In doing this, they would create a classless society where everyone would be equal
and all property would be abolished. The basis of Marxism is the conviction that socialism is
inevitable. Marx believed the free enterprise system, or capitalism, was doomed and that socialism
was the only option[iv]. Obviously, this was not a favored philosophy with expanding industrialists,
entrepreneurs, and existing political systems of the mid nineteenth century [v].
Marx wrote The Communist Manifesto with the German radical, Fredriech Engels,
Fredriech Engels[vi]
who was also Marx s best friend. The Communist Manifesto was a pamphlet written on the eve of
the German Revolution in 1848. In his essay, Marx explains his radical theories on politics and
history. Marx and Engels also examined the positive aspects of capitalism in The Communist
Manifesto. They thought the bourgeoisie had

Sociological Perspectives And Trends Of Health And Illness

trends of health and illness in two different social groups. Introduction In this assignment I will
be writing about two sociological perspectives and discus there patterns and trends of health and
illness to two social groups. The black report was published in 1980, and it included different
facts about how health can be improved from all different backgrounds in different social
groupings. There is still a co relation between social class and infant mortality rates, life
expectancy and inequalities in the use of medical services. This report looked at the differences
between health and illness. Sociologists from this very day still use the black report to look at
inequalities of health because it was that significant and powerful. Different researches do believe
that there is a link between social class and health. It is a statistical impression and also it has
been argued that there isn t really a pattern in social class, age and peoples employment that has
had an impact on people s health inequalities. Statistical artefact is a connection that shows how
different systems have been used and measured. lower class have a much higher morbidity and

Malaria Is An Ancient Disease
Background Malaria is an ancient disease. The name itself traces its origins to Medieval Italian:
mal aria or bad air referred to a swampy area of Rome known as the Pontina that saw very high
infection rates (Beltz, 2011). To this day, the disease continues to be one of the most important
parasitic infections known to man. According to the World Health Organization, 3.4 million
people may be considered at risk on a global scale and estimates indicate that there were 207
million cases in 2012 with 627,000 deaths (WHO, 2013). More than 85% of these cases occur on
the continent of Africa as well as 90% of the deaths. In highly endemic regions, malariais more of
an issue of morbidity than mortality, although the majority of individuals may be parasitized at
any given time only a minority exhibit severe symptoms (Marsh Snow, 1997). Instead these
countries are at a significant economic disadvantage due to ill workers, lack of tourism and
company investments, not to mention the educational loss future generations also incur. A febrile

These include P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae, P. ovale and P. knowlesi. Of these, the first two

The Russian Revolution had happened for two years from 1904 to 1906. Before all of the

This event, which happened in St. Petersburg, was known as the Bloody Sunday. The Bloody

people of Russia do not have enough civil rights or liberties. Peasants attacked their landlords

one of the well known strikes was the Potemkin Munity. In June 1905, sailors of the Potemkin

America During The Cold War
Throughout World War II, the perception of fear prompted Allied forces to emerge victorious from
the bloody battlefields. Subsequently, Europe faced the struggles of political and economic
fragmentation, while the remaining world powers were the United States of America and the Union
of Soviet Socialist Republics. Adhering to two highly contrasting ideologies, capitalism and
communism, fear for the other s supremacy initiated war once again.
The Cold War, of 1945 to 1991, was a lengthy era of diplomatic tension involving the rapid build up
of political, economic, and military strength in the free world. This rivalry to become the
predominant global power led to numerous discoveries through aerial, space, and technological
exploration. Events, including those of espionage, the Arms Race, and the Space Race, led to
American Soviet encounters and exchanges, contributing to major advancements in the fields of
both science and technology.
Following World War II, America, and its allies, closely observed the USSR s expansion movements
in Eastern Europe, fearful of a Soviet scheme to take command through the influence of
communism. This mass hysteria, leading to enduring actions committed by the American society
and government, became ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Employee Turnover At Employers Gain And Lose Their Employees
Employee turnover is defined as the rate at which employers gain and lose their staff (Kysilka
Csaba, 2012). When an employee leaves a company, valuable skills and knowledge are lost and
it could directly affect the guest. Moreover, finding new employees with similar performance
levels as the ones you ve lost is time consuming and not to mention, costly. Companies who
actively find ways to retain employees gain a strong competitive advantage, especially in the
hospitality industry (Kysilka Csaba, 2012). Although a certain amount of turnover is necessary
and healthy for an organization, a high amount can lead to excessive costs. Turnover is
problematic for many companies because it is very costly for the employer, especially in jobs
which offer higher education and extensive on the job training. High turnover is part of larger set
of problems including reduced production and quality higher costs, low satisfaction with
managers, work anxiety, absenteeism and work place accidents (Dipietro Condly, 2007). Reasons
For Employee Turnover One of the key reasons a company experiences high employee turnover is
demographic factors such as age, gender, education, income level, and job category. More key
factors for employee turnover include perceived alternative employment opportunity, job hopping,
salary, type of work, supervision, and organizational commitment (Kysilka Csaba, 2012). A big

Water Pollution in Canada Essay
The industrialization of Canada is severely affecting the nations lakes, streams, and rivers. If
something is not done to improve the situation it is going to have some severe environmental
problems in its future. The following essay will be looking at the factors that cause pollution, and
the effect that pollution has on the environment of Canada. It will also explore some of the methods
used to treat and clean up wastewater, and oil spills.
Today pollution is very high in both inland and marine waters. All different types of water pollution
are contributing factors in this problem. Here are some things that are associated with pollution:

Southern
Saskatchewan and Alberta are threatened by water shortages, and the great lakes face problems in
serious pollution. Rivers and streams are also greatly affected by these pollutants.
The noticeable outcomes of these pollutants are these:
Nitrates in drinking water can cause disease in infants that may sometimes end in death. Crops in
a field can absorb sludge derived fertilizer containing cadium, and when humans eat the crop it
may result in acute liver and kidney damage. Sometimes lakes become artificially enriched with
nutrients from the chemical fertilizers that run off cultivated fields into the water. This causes
water that is unpleasant to drink due to bad odor, taste, and algae. Also, acid rain has left many
lakes in Canada totally devoid of life.
There are three major sources of water pollution, they are municipal, industrial and agricultural.
Municipal: This type of water pollution comes from the wastewater found only in homes and
commercial establishments For many years people have been placing importance on treating the
waste to remove harmful bacteria, etc. from it. Recently we are coming aware of the fact that we
have to improve the ways in which we dispose of the waste. Industrial: Industrial waste is

Essay about Arthurian Romances
Arthurian Romances
The Middle Ages of Europe were governed by a system which is referred to as feudalist. The
people of this system flow together well; society in these times require noble people to set the
example for the younger. The ranks of the noble include counts, lords, knights, kings, queens, etc.
These noblemen can be compared to as dueling politicians; they watch over their communities,
keeping everything orderly, and they fend off any attackers trying to besiege land. The peace
keeper of the society is the knight. The knight has been appointed the position of knight by a king
because his traits and characteristic best fit the standards of a good warrior and protector of the
civilization. A knight... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

To his wife he has total respect and love to give, but he isn t hesitant when telling her to stay put.
The story puts the knight in a high class because he is extremely helpful to the community.
(1) Chretien De Troyes, Arthurian Romances, Trans. William W. Kibler
(New York: Penguin Books, 1991) p. 89
The knight prays constantly to his God for protection. He fights others in battles with an extremely
high risk of death, so he likes to profess a faith.
Erec of Lac is honored by his community of Christians for his heroics and courage. His faith is
necessary to keep his beautiful wife. They use religion to establish trust in their relationship to
ensure happiness together.
Knighthood is only developed for the man because women are only seen as maid servants.
Authority feel that a woman cannot possess all the qualities of a knight so they put them to work
as maids. The only women who have high ranks in the feudalist system are those who are married
to the noble ranks. Otherwise, women will marry into poverty where they will remain for the rest
of their time.

The Tragical History Of Doctor Faustus
The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, or Doctor Faustus, is a tragedy, written by Christopher
Marlowe, which conveys the heavy use of symbolism and allusions to illustrate the conflict
between good and evil during a time of rebirth in England. This play was first performed sometime
between 1588 and 1593, and published sometime in the early 1600s and is based on the protagonist,
Faustus, who originates from a classic oral German legend. Doctor Faustus is one of the first of
many publications that center on the character that is Faust. Doctor Faustus tells the story of a man
who has made a deal with the devil in order to gain unlimited knowledge, which in turn, guides him
down a path of damnation and a constant struggle between right and wrong. The decisions that the
titular character makes throughout the story are presented through an overall theme of the English
Renaissance, along with symbolism and allegories that accompany the good and evil angels, as
well as the seven deadly sins. Marlowe wrote Doctor Faustus during the English Renaissance, and
much of what goes on throughout the play exemplifies the transition from the old medieval lifestyle
to the new, modern lifestyle. The Renaissance brought forth a flourishing amount of opportunities
in education and other social aspects and made it possible for people to rise up through society by
working hard and by having ambition. Faustus heavily embodies many of the changes in principle

The Generation Of The World Essay
This distinction allows Athanasius to argue that the Arians had confused the ideas of offspring
with creature and the verbs to beget with to create. What becomes apparent from the above
Athanasian text is that the decisive factor which defines the distinction between offspring and
creature is the person of the Father and his role in the generation of the Son and the creation of
the world. Athanasius task becomes proving that the Father is portrayed in the Bible as
personally involved in the generation of the Son as opposed to the creatures who exist outside
of him. In this effort he turns to Psalms and examines three texts: Psalm 2:7 ( The Lord said to
me, My son you are; today I have begotten you ), Psalm 44:2 ( My heart spoke a good word ), and
Psalm 109:3 ( From the womb, before Morning star, I brought you forth ) and synthesizes them
with verses speaking of the Father s direct relation to the Son (Matt. 3:17; John 8:42; 6:46).
Matt. 3:17, 17:5
The Father s personal relationship with the Son is perhaps nowhere more evident than in the
baptism and transfiguration (Mat. 3:17, 17:5; Mark 1:11, 9:7; Luke 3:22, 9:35). Traditionally
interpreted along Trinitarian terms Athanasius makes use of this voluntary declaration of the Father
with the Son as describing Jesus natural sonship. By focusing on the Father s initiative as an
unprecedented occurrence he argues that if the generation of the Son did not differ essentially from
the creation of other beings and he were

Sense Of Blindness
HEIGHTENED SENSES IN THE BLIND
We as human beings utilize the five senses to process information about our surroundings. These
senses help keep us safe. For example, we use our sense of touch to avoid picking up a hot pan,
while our senses of smell and taste prevent us from cooking any rotten food in the pan. Our sense of
sight allows us to see an oncoming train, while our sense of sound makes it possible to hear the
train s horn.
Unfortunately, some people are born without the sense of sight, and many others may lose the
sense at some point in their lives for various reasons. It is estimated that 1.3 million people in the
United States are legally blind, and of the 1.3 million, only 1% are born without the sense of sight
(National Federation of the Blind, 2017).
Although not having the sense of sight can be devastating, studies have been conducted proving a
person s remaining senses can be heightened over those of individuals with normal vision.
The length of time a person experiences without their sense of sight seems to impact the
enhancement of their other senses. Therefore, we will see a trend in the following studies where
participants who are born blind or became blind early in life will often be categorized separately,
outperforming sighted individuals, or people with normal vision.
The first study involved eight men with early onset blindness and sixteen sighted men in the control
group (Cuevas, Plaza, Rombaux, Collignon, De Volder, Renier, 2010). The purpose

A bird flies wildly about, twisting and diving. It is panicked, trying to escape the boy on the

The Overpopulation Of The Ohio Valley
In the United States, about 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters every year. The
overpopulation of these animals and the fact that they have no homes leads to about 40% of them
being euthanized (ASPCA). This is a global issue, but the root of it can be found within the local
community at The Humane Societyof the Ohio Valley.
The director of this animal shelter, Kelly Goedel, says that the cause of animal homelessness is
primarily the lack of spaying and neutering along with the lack of commitment that pet owners
have to their companion (Goedel). Spaying and neutering is sometimes avoided by pet owners
because it is an extra expense or they may feel as if it is unnecessary. This challenge leads to an
excess in animal populations without there necessarily being and increase in homes for these
animals. The challenge of overcoming pet overpopulation becomes even more difficult because of a
lack of funding. According to the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley, only about 20 percent of
their funding comes from local government (Goedel). Therefore, they are very reliant on donors and
community funds to help finance their organization. The funding issue circles back to complicate
the process of getting homeless pets spayed and neutered to attempt to solve the root cause of
animal overpopulation.
The basis of our project was to raise funds and awareness for the HSOV. We wanted to reach out to
as many people as we could so we can spread the issue of the shelters.

The And New England Colonies
Everyone has an external force that motivates them in some way that allows them to be able to
go about their everyday lives and fulfill their ambitions. Within the years of 1580 and 1763 this
force took the form of God. Around this same time was when the Chesapeake and New England
colonies were in the process of being founded. As a result, these two settlements did nothing
without referencing their actions to God. Due to this heavy focus on God as the reason behind
every aspect of their lives, chaos began to sprout soon after the settlers began settling and started
living their new lives in the colonies. Since the colonist believed that God dictated their entire
lives; they never felt that they were in the wrong. Not once did the colonists stop to think that they
had no right to steal the natives land. If God had not smitten them, then they thought that God
approved of what they were doing. In this case, the colonists were in the process of acquiring land
that the earth bringeth foorth all things in aboundance, as in the first creation, without toile or
labour... the most plentifull, sweete, fruitfull, and wholesome [soil] of all the world . The new
land that the colonists wanted to take appeared similar to the Garden of Eden. Since they
successfully made their voyage to the new land, it looked as if God allowed them to enter a land
similar to one of his own. If God gave the colonists access to the land, then wouldn t that mean that
the colonists were entitled to the land

The Causes Of Stress In Modern Life
The Causes of StressStress is a common issue that many deal with on a daily basis. It is often
described as a feeling of being overloaded, tense, and worried. Small amounts of stress can be
beneficial, but too much is extremely detrimental. According to Danzae Pace, Stress is the trash
of modern life we all generate it, but if you don t dispose of it properly, it will pile up and overtake
your life (Pace). This buildup of stressis immensely toxic, and there are many reasons for such a
buildup. Stress is primarily caused by three main factors: a person s financial responsibilities, job
pressure, and health. Financial stress is a persistent stressor in all of our lives. It is an important

found that workers with highly demanding jobs and little control over decision making were
23% more likely to have a heart attack compared to their peers with less job stress over the 7.5
year study (Stifferlin). The effect of work related stress is also felt by others, these individuals
often include family, friends, and even co workers. Workplace stress not only affects the
individual, but has also been estimated to cost the American industry more than 100 billion
dollars annually in absenteeism, productivity loss, and health related expenses.Possibly the most
major cause of stress is the fear over one s own health, or the wellbeing of a relative or friend.
The experience of an illness, and the loss of control over events, can lead to persistent worry
about both the current and possible future situations. Paradoxically, the stress caused by one s
health worries can lead to problems. Many people also significantly worry about the wellbeing of
friends and family, which when affected can create even more stress. It is clear that excess stress
leads to many more problems than benefits. Most stress in life can be categorized into three main
topics: a person s financial responsibilities, job pressure, and health. It can be avoided, and even

Macbeth Character Analysis
In the tragic play Macbeth , by William Shakespeare, a Scottish general named Macbeth was
foretold to become king by three witches. In order to secure his kismet, Macbeth commits numerous
murders and ultimately is driven by insanity and ambition. In the end, Macbeth is beheaded by
Macduff, however a question still lingers on. Was Macbetha monster more inclined to evil than
most human beings, or a man who succumbs to temptation by his own expense to suffer the
repercussions of his own flaw? Throughout the play Macbeth was tempted, like Adam and Eve, with
the promise of power by a force of evil. Although he does give in to this desire, multiple forces
pressured him into committing the sinful crime. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth had no
selfish thought nor lust for self benefit until the trio of witches approached them with a promise
of power. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth was known by his fellow comrades to be a
brave, powerful, and ambitious man. Often regarded as brave Macbeth, well he deserved that
name (Act 1: Sc 2). Like any other hero, Macbeth was well known and praised for heroic deeds.
Although he was highly spoken of, he like many tragic heroes had a flaw. Macbeth was not
virtuous. Although at first he was highly regarded and fulfilled his duties as general for the [safety]

Womens Rights Violations
Women s rights, as defined by the Global Fund for Women, is the right to live free from violence,
slavery, and discrimination; to be educated; to own property; to vote; and to earn a fair and equal
wage, and in our country, there have been many instances of the violation of these rights, such as
sexual harassment, genderdiscrimination, misogyny. These acts can even be seen at different
points in the timeline of the Philippine history, be it in the past decades, or at present. Hence, the
purpose of this paper is to compare women s rights violations in the Philippines in the context of
both the present, and the time of Martial Law.
During Martial Law At the time of Martial Law, rights pertaining to women were already present
and were those that have already been recognized by the state. Despite having these, the rise of
harassment and violations of these rights were not prevented as evidenced by the numerous victims
of torture, rape, abduction, and sexual harassment, which in particular, was the prominent act of
violence against women. As mentioned by Susan Quimpo upon inquiry, The common thought
among women was that rape was the minimum when you are caught and you are a woman. There
was even an SOP with the military where they were allowed to molest or basically rape women
when caught, and this instance alone shows how women are not only sexualized, but likewise how
there is much disregard of the rights they have not to live in discrimination and violence. Quimpo

Women History Reflection
After learning about Women s History, my eyes were not only opened up to the difficult
challenges faced in the past, but opened up to see the beauty of today. This Women s History class
altered my perspectives, introduced me to significant changes, and gave me the knowledge to know
what my obligations are as a womantoday.
My perspectives have changed towards multiple different events in Women s History. One of the
most interesting topics, and biggest events to me personally, would be in regards to women s
rights. The reasoning for this includes my personal view change on the Equal Rights
Amendment itself. I have been pro women s equal rights my entire life, and that will never
change. However, I have also been pro Equal Rights Amendment, and that changed from the
teachings in this class. From now knowing how important the role was that women had on
society, there would not be anything I would change. We needed women to be home to raise and
care for the children, clean the house, and cook. It was not always possible for both men and
women to work when kids were needing to be raised. Similarly, mentioned in this book, and
throughout the teachings, was the importance of the women s role to the civil war. If women and
men were completely equal, both the men and women would be drafted into the war. We would
not have had the women to nurse and care for those wounded. If we did, there would be a very
limited amount. The book states in Chapter 5 Primary Sources, The most

The audience is extremely aware of this through the use of the Albanian girl scene where through

dramatic irony here to emphasise this point to the viewers, who know what the public in the film

remember the slogans but don t remember the wars . As Brean satirises the perspective of the
outsider s the view in which the American people see the world is seen, especially through the use
of the Albanian girl where the audience literally sees what the audience in the film sees and

verisimilitude that the public so easily succumbs to. Though, his character is portrayed in a

The Symptoms Of Taking Rap Music

April 9, 2015
The Symptoms of Taking Rap Music Music is one of the greatest ways of expressing one s
personal feelings and experiences through the use of story telling. One of the most popular genres
of music is rap or also known as hip hop. Hip hop music has a profound effect, both positive and
negative on many of today s youth which transforms and evolves American culture and society.
What started it all was the origin of gangsta rap , which was popularized by gangster rappers such
as Tupac Shakur, Notorious BIG, Ma$e, Snoop Dogg, and Scarface. These were all rappers who
influenced American culture and made the genre of rap and hip hop more mainstream which
captivated many listeners not only on a local level, but on an international level. However, some
of the lyrics that were stated were not only meaningful, but sometimes controversial in the eye of
the general public. Nonetheless, hip hop music has always had an influence on many
generations and their shaping of what we know today of the modern American society and
culture. Early 90 s rap music had a negative influence on American society due to the vulgar acts
and explicit language that was used to describe stories and other elements of rap. In the late
1980 s and early 1990 s, hip hop only had one tag to itself gangster rap. Gangster rap was rap music
that described the life of a gangster and a criminal who would have done things such as murder or

Mexico Essay
Mexico is bordered by the United States on the north, the Pacific Ocean on the west, the Gulf of
Mexico and the Caribbean Sea on the east, and Guatemala and Belize on the south. It is
characterized by an extraordinary diversity in topography and climate and is crossed by two major
mountain chains, the SierraMadre Occidental and the Sierra Madre Oriental. The high central
plateau between these two mountain ranges historicallyfunneled most of the human population
toward the center of this region. Mexico features volcanic peaks, snow capped mountains, tropical
rain forests, and internationally famous beaches. Mexico City is an enormous metropolitan area

Much of northwest Mexico including Baja California and the northern regions of the Pacific
Coast lowlands is quite arid, receiving less than 130 mm (5 in) of rain per year. The northern Gulf
Coast plains are semiarid, receiving about 250 to 560 mm (about 10 to 22 in) of rainfall annually.
As on the central plateau, rainfall increases toward the south on both the western and eastern coasts.
The tropic of Cancer, which marks the northern limits of the tropics, passes through the southern
tip of Baja California and crosses central Mexico. Much of southern Mexico has a tropical climate
with distinct rainy and dry seasons; the Gulf Coast has more regular and abundant rainfall than the
southern regions of the Pacific Coast. Temperatures in these coastal regions range between 21 and
27В°C (70 and 80В°F) during the year. Annual rainfall, which generally ranges between 1,500 and
2,000 mm (60 and 80 in), comes mainly during the rainy season of May to October. Mexico s Gulf
Coast is subject to hurricanes that pass through the region and often cause extensive damage.
The northern YucatГЎn Peninsula is hot and semiarid. Annual rainfall ranges between 500 and

Shopping Malls Are Becoming Extinct
Ever wonder what your favorite mall will look like if it was replaced by an empty lot? How
would you feel? Approximately 60 years ago when shopping malls were first built, it was
expected to be the gleaming symbols of America s future. Shopping malls were created to lure
customers from the city into the suburbs; thus allowing shopping be done under one roof.
However, according to recent studies conducted by Green Street Advisors, 10 percent of the
nation s 1,000 enclosed malls will fail by 2022. Although this may not seem detrimental, once
the malls begin to disappear, shoppers will be limited to where they shop. Shopping malls are
becoming extinct because of change in generation, economic issues, and the closing of major
anchor stores. As we enter a new generation, shoppers are gearing toward online and mobile
shopping, which contributes to the extinction of shopping malls. America reached a time period
where the number of adults who were born in a time where online shopping was not thought of
are retiring; resulting in old habits, such as shopping in malls, coming to a cease. The older
generation of adults tend to revert back to familiar habits such as shopping at malls or going to a
bookstore. The new generation of adults/teenagers do not use shopping malls as a hangout spot in
contrast to older generation, thus leading to the decline of shopping malls. Other than shopping,
shopping malls were once used for socializing. However, with the increase of social networks

My Personal Statement On Computer Science
Engineers are problem solvers, and are driven by a curious mind and the instinct to know the
How and Why of processes. My inquisitiveness is what has fuelled my academic career, and I
hope it will be the trait that I can rest most of my future education too. I am keen to learn more in
the field of Computer Science to further my career once I am geared with an extensive and
wholesome knowledge base. After nearly 4 years working in this field, I have realized just how
vast and pervasive its scope is, something I find exhilarating and motivating in light of the fact
that I didn t focus on Computer Science in my undergraduate career. I hope to learn more about
the practical applications in this field to give me a sustained edge in my career. I was a very
committed chess player through school and till college. Chess was my outlet from traditional
classroom studying, and my foray into the competitive world. I participated in multiple tournaments
when I was in high school. It has come to my rescue multiple times. As a chess player, no matter
what I put my mind to, I find myself thinking three steps ahead, assessing the landscape for
compromises, anticipating the opponent s moves, and strategizing to optimize my performance. I
like to think of software development as a complex, multifaceted game of chess! It requires tact,
precision, awareness, and absolute presence of mind. I graduated from Gandhi Institute of

Anne Bradstreet To My Dear And Loving Husband Analysis
Anne Bradstreet, A passionate puritan poet
Anne Bradstreet was a passionate poet that was very devoted to her family, her puritan religion,
and her husband. She lived during the early 1600 s and was a part of the Puritanism movement;
her poetic style was in her faith. Bradstreet wrote To My Dear and Loving Husband and Upon the
Burning of Our House, July 10th, 1666 , these two poems are significant because they gave her
acknowledgement for her beliefs and granted her themes to be inspirational.
Anne had an excellent education thanks to her father s high position, she soon moved out of
England to the new world in Massachusetts where she learned about puritanism. She did have a

The poem has also been an indicator of the unevenness of gender roles in Puritan culture, in which
the wife is vulnerable and subservient to the husband (Ruby). Another theme in the poem is how
the gender roles in the culture put women below men. Even though they represent shocking
excesses of material fortune in worldly terms, they are worth less to her than the love of her husband
(Ruby). This shows that no materialistic or currency can compare to her husband s love for her.
The poem had a deal of reviews from

Situational Irony In Ransom Of Red Chief
What if someone told you that if you kidnap this child, a lot of money would be given to you?
The catch is: after you kidnap the child, that same person would tell you he has no money, so no
ransom would be paid. In O. Henry s Ransom of Red Chief , this is precisely what happened.
Two kidnappers, Sam, the narrator, and Bill Driscol, decide to kidnap the only child of Ebenezer
Dorset, a money tight wealthy man who is highly respected in the small town of Summit. How the
ransom is paid; however, is quite unexpected. O. Henry uses verbal and situational ironyto design
humor and advance the theme of not everything is as it seems and taking shortcuts in life. Situation
irony is when unexpected action occur. This type of irony is used many... Show more content on

If this was a realistic story, Ebenezer Dorset should have paid the kidnappers instead of the other
way around. As in the last paragraph, Dorset wrote, You bring Johnny home and pay me two
hundred and fifty dollars in cash, and I agree to take him off your hands. (Henry 591) What
Dorset is implying is that the kidnappers should pay the ransom to bring the child back. And the
ironic and funny thing is; they do! Sam and Bill are so fed up with Red Chief they pay Dorset to
give him back, as it says on page 593, Just at the moment when I should have been abstracting the
fifteen hundred dollars from the box under the tree, according to the original proposition, bill
was counting out two hundred and fifty dollars into Dorset s hand. (Henry 593) This is very
amusing to the readers because the kidnappers are paying the victim s father. It s like a baby sitter
paying the parents of the child they just baby sat. This irony also supports the theme of short cuts.
Sam and Bill wanted to take a short cut by kidnapping to get money, and at the end of it all, they
lost even more money than they originally

to explain and persuade to the readers that non violent resistance is the best way to gain support
and to be heard. Chavez uses one of his rhetorical questions in paragraph 13, that states, Who
gets killed in the case of violent revolution? Then he goes on to make a great point that poor
people Workers are affected by the violence. This helps him convince the reader by telling how
people are being hurt by the violent structures of others making the reader feel like it s wrong to

Prime Time Health Care

ORGANIZATION KNOWS: INTERVIEWS Company Timeline: The Accidental Start 2011
2012 Based on a recent interview with both managing partners of Prime Time Healthcare, our
team has a solid understanding on how data visualization can create numerous advantages for
our clients (Spencer Dries, 2014). In 2012, Prime Time Healthcare was created by accident after
a lawsuit changed the entrepreneur s original business plan, and the result of the case forced the
managing partners to focus on a single niche due to compliance and regulatory issues (Spencer
Dries, 2014). Company Timeline: 2012 2013 the Oil Boom The first trend that Prime Time
Healthcare was able to take advantage of was the increased demand for skilled labor in low
populated areas in North Dakota and Montana due to the shale oil boom (Spencer Dries, 2014).
This initial success in recruiting skilled talent led to the perfection of several processes and the
beginning of key relationships with rural healthcare providers (Spencer Dries, 2014). Despite
recent success, rural demand for skilled labor remains the most important value driver for current
and future business (Spencer Dries, 2014). One of the surprises during the oil boom experience
was that the region s demand for skilled labor was not as unique as previously thought (Spencer
Dries, 2014). Pretty quickly, it became clear that several areas needed this exact job placing service,

Human Geography Chapter Summaries
Chapter one in the book, Human Geography, gives a timeline of the changes that have occurred
since the creation of planet Earth. The author, John Rennie Short, explained how truly powerful the
earth itself is. It has the ability to wipe out humanity. We often blame nature when natural disasters
happen, but perhaps the humanrace may have something to do with the cause of environmental
hazards like volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, and earthquakes.
Short went into depth when talking about the nine main plates of the Earth. The movement of these
plates have caused land to separate and changed the location of continents. A great example of the
power that these plates hold is when the Indo Australian plate and the Eurasian plate came together.

Notes On Sound And Noise
2.1SOUND AND NOISE:
Sound is the variation of pressure in an elastic medium (such as air) caused by a mechanical
disturbance. The movement of molecules in a transmitting medium caused by a disturbance results
in pressure oscillations above (compressions) and below (rarefactions) the ambient pressure level.
The oscillation of sound pressure variations is referred to as a sound wave. A sound wave will
move through an ideal medium longitudinally and omnidirectionally. The oscillation frequency of a
sound wave determines the pitch of a sound, which is measured in Hertz (Hz). The healthy human
ear can typically discern frequencies between 20 and 20,000 Hz. The amplitude of the pressure
oscillations of a sound wave describes the amount of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hard surfaces such as smooth wood or metal often reflect sound waves well but attenuate sound
poorly. Conversely, soft, porous surfaces usually reflect sound waves poorly but attenuate sound
waves well. Reflected sound waves can increase the overall SPL in an area, as the reflected
wave essentially becomes an additional sound source. Sound behaves predictably in the far field
(i.e., far enough away from individual sound sources relative to the size of the sound sources) and
most sound measurement equipment can only accurately measure SPLs in the far field. The
measurement of sound generated by a source within a reflective chamber (reverberant field) is
more difficult because the large number of reflections increase the overall SPL if the measurement
is also made within the reflective chamber. SPLs measured in the reverberant field of the ear
cannot directly be compared to SPLs in the free field without first compensating for the higher
SPLs at certain frequencies caused by the resonance of the ear canal.
2.2AUDITION:
Audition, or the perception of sound, is accomplished via the complex transformation from sound
pressure waves to electrical nerve impulses and interpretation in the brain. The human ear is
divided into three main parts; the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear (see Figure 2.1). The
outer ear consists of the pinna (or auricle), which is the visible portion of

Prion Disease Essay
Sometimes a scientific discovery shakes the confidence of scientists, making them question whether
they truly understand nature s ground rules. That s exactly what prions have done to scientists
understanding of the ground rules for infectiousdiseases. Prions cause diseases, but they aren t
viruses or bacteria or fungi or parasites. They are simply proteins, and proteins were never thought
to be infectious on their own. Organisms are infectious, proteins are not. Or, at least, they never
used to be. Prions entered the public s consciousness during the mad cow epidemic that hitEngland
in 1986. For decades, however, scientists had searched for unusual, atypical infectious agents that
they suspected caused some puzzling... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sheep and goats with the disease scrapie, which is like mad cow disease, become so uncomfortable
and itchy that they frantically rub up against anything they can, finally scraping off В– hence, the

and release prions into the tissue. These prions then enter, infect, and destroy other brain cells.
And, as clusters of cells die, the brain stops looking like a brain and starts looking more like
Swiss cheese. The medical term for the prion diseases is spongiform encephalopathies, in
acknowledgement that the sick brains are riddled with holes and have taken the form of sponges.
Shepherds and farmers whose sheep had scrapie never seemed to get scrapie themselves. So, for a
long time, scientists assumed that the prions of animals did not cause infections in humans. But,
between 1994 and 1996, 12 people in
England came down with Creutzfeld Jakob disease (CJD), a human prion disease whose
symptoms are not unlike those of the mad cows, and all the victims had eaten beef from cows
suspected of having mad cow disease. In October, 1996, scientists in England reported that the
prions from ten of the British patients were remarkably like those of the mad cows and not like
those of people

Allan Johnson Privilege Chapter Summary
The Complexity of Privilege and Domination
Privilege always occurs at the expense of others. Allan Johnson states, The trouble we re in
privileges some groups at the expense of others. It creates a yawning divide in levels of income,
wealth, dignity, safety, health, and quality of life (Johnson 7). Allan Johnson states this in
Chapter 1 of his book Privilege, Power and Difference and it is one of the most powerful
statements in the whole book. Privilege creates a great divide between people. This can have a
negative lasting effect, if not under control. Society has divided people into two groups: superior
and inferior. The superior groups are the ones that are privileged in society and the inferior ones are
ones that are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even though one would think that because Woodruff is male, he would have a lot of privileges,
this is not the case. Woodruff s race eliminates any privileges he might have, especially when
faced against seven white boys. Woodruff finds himself almost powerless to the boys when he
witnesses them commit a crime. Petry writes, Woodruff thought, There are seven of them,
young, strong, satanic. He ought to go home where it was quiet and safe, mind his own business
a black man s business; leave this white man s problem for a white man, leave it alone, don t
interfere... (2257). This statement clearly shows the racial differences and how Woodruff is
aware that he should not interfere. Later in the short story Petry explains that Woodruff ended up
staying silent about the crime because he feared the white boys. Petry states, They knew he wasn
t going to the police about any matter which involved sex and a white girl, especially where there
was the certainty that all seven of them would accuse him of having relations with the girl (2263).
It is clear that Woodruff s race set him back from having any privileges. This relates to the matrix
of domination because it demonstrates the complexity of privilege. It shows how same system of
privilege can make one superior but at the same time make one inferior.

A Literary Analysis Of Atonement By Ian Mcewan
Atonement
Published in 2002 by Ian McEwan, Atonement presents readers with a story of love and war,
childhood and class, guilt and forgiveness (McEwan back cover). In this narrative, a ripple effect of
unfortunate events occurs after a thirteen year old girl named Briony falsely accuses someone of
raping her cousin Lola. Through the character s actions, the readers come to understand that one
cannot change the past, even if they seek atonement with the highest amount of effort. Ian McEwan
does an excellent job of presenting this theme by shifting through different perspectives, using
symbolism, and showing the metamorphosis of the characters, specifically in Briony. Over the
course of McEwan s perspective shifting narrative, we find characters, ... Show more content on

The theme and truth is that there was an absence of atonement in Atonement (Pastoor 1) and the
recognition that one could attempt to achieve it, but might never actually get there. One cannot
change the past or justify one s actions in the process of obtaining atonement. However, one can
try to do the right thing and learn from one s mistakes, and even pass on those mistakes so that
others do not imitate them just like how Briony wrote about the consequences of her mistakes in
her novels. She was not selfish enough to give herself a happy ending by letting Cecilia and
Robbie forgive her, but she gave Cecilia and Robbie a happy ending. If Robbie and Cecilia are
dead, as many readers presume from Briony s statements, then let their deaths not be in vain
through her stories, but if they are alive, then it would be ideal for them to read her story and truly
forgive her for this might be the closest and only way to obtain some sort of

Ultra Running Research Paper
Ultra running is an extreme sport enjoyed by few that involves pushing the human body to its limits
by running distances further than a standard twenty six point two mile marathon. The modern
marathon race and distance came from Greek history when a soldier named Phidippides ran 26.2
miles from the town of Marathonto the capital of Greece, Athens to deliver a message. Although
running extreme distances was sometimes a necessity in ancient times, modern ultra runners
simply have a love for it. Some popular ultra marathon races include: the Leadville Trail 100, the
Badwater 135, the Le Grand Raid, and the Jungle Ultra.
The men and women who enjoy these races are quite different from the average person or even the
occasional runner. Ultra runners put themselves through rigorous training and pay very close
attention to their diet and nutritional intake. Another trait that sets ultra runners apart from the
average person is their mindset and great mental strength. Ultra runners receive happiness from the
physical exertion of running extensive distances. Although ultra runners are generally healthier than
the average American, there are some health problems that come from running extreme distances,
including: increased stress fractures in the feet, increased allergies, and increased asthma.

Sir Gawain And The Green Knight Archetype Analysis
There are a number of many different archetypes found in works of fiction and nonfiction that
bestow upon the hero his true role in a work of literature. In the Middle English, chivalric romance
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Gawain s role as the hero emboldens as the story describes more
and more archetypes of the quest. The monomyth can be described as the three step process that the
hero takes in completing the quest motif. The basic template is supported by separation, initiation,
and return: which might be named the nuclear unit of the monomyth (Campbell 28). Each of these
three categories contain other subcategories, which help understand the different archetypical
situation within the work itself. An understanding of three key archetypes the magic weapon, the
boon, and the unhealable wound reveal the essence of Gawain s role within the archetypal quest
motif.
The magic weapon in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is the the green girdle. The green girdle
was bestowed upon Gawain by the host s wife. However, as the story concludes we soon find out
that this young lady ends up being the Green Knight s wife. The green girdle symbolizes
safeness or a value of being safe. Between there meeting the young lady explains, For whatever
Knight is girded with this green lace, while he bears it knotted about him there is no man under
heaven can overcome him, for he may not be slain for any magic on earth (Weston 31). The
young lady gives Gawain the green girdle after he refuses to take the ring that is offered to him.
Since Gawain fails to exchange the girdle with Bertilak as the terms of the men s agreement
dictate, it also symbolizes Gawain s desperate desire to survive at the expense of his code of
honor. Only after Gawain fails the Green Knight s test does this meaning become clear to him.
With the power of the green girdle by his side and his mind set forth on his destiny, Gawain heads
out with the guide to find the Green Knight. About half way through the ride the guide asks
Gawain whether he would decide to slide out of his scenario with the Green Knight. As they reach
the border of the forest, the guide promises not to tell anyone if Gawain decides to give up the
quest. Gawain refuses, determined to

  • 2. Description Of A Shopping Holiday A Shopping Holiday Are you hungry for some healthful eats? Craving some good wine? Maybe you re just hankering for a great deal. Then let s take a stroll down to the docks and pay a visit to old Trader Joe. If you re lucky enough to find parking it seems most Trader Joes have rather limited parking lots you re on your way to an adventure in grocery shopping. As you pass through the magical sliding glass doors, you enter another world, a fascinating bustle of excitement, smiles and wholesome nutrition. This self proclaimed Unique Grocery Store is certainly unlike any other vendor of goods you will find. Compared to your ordinary Ralph s, Von s or Costco, Trader Joe s offers its customers, and its employees, a fully realized theme environment, not unlike what one might find at a store designed by the Walt Disney Company. As you enter the brightly lit space guests are overwhelmed with a very welcoming, island atmosphere: flowers, Tiki carvings, hand painted signage, and some stores even have aisles with thatched roof awnings supported by heavy wooden poles to ensure you get the idea. This theming and design takes customers out of the real world and into an over seas adventure. While walking around the store, selecting your rather common loaves of bread or chicken breasts, you get the drawing impression that you are on a very uncommon tropical vacation. In our fast paced, modern environment here in Southern California, any respite from the madness is a welcomed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Chile Of Peru And Chile For the fault zone that I chose to research for this project, I chose the Peru Chile Trench, also known as the Chile Subduction Megathrust and as the Atacama Trench. It is called that because the area between Peru and Chile is called The Atacama , and such was the plate named. The Peru Chile trench is located along the western coast of Peru and Chile. It marks the zone where the Nazca plate is being subducted beneath the South American plate and is approximately 3,666 miles long. (Britannica, p.1) Located on the fault are sediments, amongst them are turbidites. Turbidites are areas of sediment are deposited in the deep ocean. Therefore, there are many seismic events that have taken place on our geologic timeline and at the same time shaped our historic timeline. The most recent large scale earthquake along the Peru Chile Plate was the 16 September earthquake, which happened in 2015. It measured an M 8.3, one of the largest on record. 5 were killed, and over 1 million were evacuated from greatly affected areas. However, compared to other earthquakes that have taken place in Chile, this one was moderate. In 2010, an 8.8 Mw earthquake shook Chile. It was approximately 200 miles southwest of Chile and was approximately 375 miles long. A 2014 study attributed the quake to immense water pressure located between the two plates. The region was stricken by strong aftershocks for months after the quake, many of a magnitude of 5.0 Mw or greater. The Tsunami that took place after the initial quake was caused by a portion of seabed rupturing upwards, and displacing a large portion of the water being displaced. This water traveled at 450 miles, at 8 feet tall, to the Chilean and Peruvian coast. Early viewers of the tsunami later reported waves being up to 10 feet tall. This rupture was believed to be caused by 2 unusually dense pieces of seabed that had been previously undetected by scientists, and consequently caused a large displacement of water. There were also small ruptures of seismic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Before Hitler s Military Background Before He Was Fuehrer Hitler was the Fuhrer of Germany. So what was his life before he was Fuehrer? Hitler started out as a regular everyday person, although later he was not. So what was his childhood like? Why was his military background before he was Fuehrer? And finally, Why did he loathe and despise Jewish people? At the start, Adolf Hitler had a very bad, and influential childhood. Hitler was born in Braunau, Austria Hungary in 1889. His father was a low level customs official, and wanted his son, Hitler, to join him as a customs official, but Hitler instead, wished to be in Fine Arts, of which his father very much disliked. Hitler s brother Edmund, passed away when Hitler was 11 in 1900. 3 short years later, his father also died, in 1903. Consequently, 2 years later in 1905, Hitler s mother allowed him to drop out of school to pursue the Fine Arts. After leaving school he, Spent the next three years wandering around Linz attending the theater and spending time in the library . His mother, Klara Polzl, died 1907 leaving Hitler with no family. • 5. Essay on Reconstruction and Industrialization Reconstruction and Industrialization After the Civil War, the nation witnessed two major social economic movements: Reconstruction and Industrialization, which changed the country completely and made it one of the greatest industrialized countries in the world. However, it changed not only the country, but also, the society, its way of life and traditions. The effort to rebuild the southern states and restore the Union was known as Reconstruction, a period that lasted from 1865 to 1877. Several different plans for Reconstruction emerged during and after the war. Much debate about differing plans centered on who would control Reconstruction the President or Congress. Lincoln had wanted to adopt a mild and forgiving policy... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition to addressing several civil rights issues, the amendment prohibited many former Confederate officers and government officials from voting. This period of Radical Reconstruction did not bring much change in the South. Although blacks began to participate in political life, they met tremendous hostility. Some Southern whites adopted a policy of terror to keep the freedmen from becoming too independent. Because blacks had no jobs or land they became sharecroppers in a kind of economic slavery. Grant won election in 1868, and Congress became free to follow its Radical Reconstruction policies. It successfully proposed the Fourteenth and the Fifteenth Amendments. However, a major depression occurred in 1873. In addition, public attention was diverted by the graft and corruption in President Grant s cabinet. Corruption in the Grant administration weakened the political strength of the Republican Party. In addition, by the early 1870s, all but a handful former Confederates could vote again. Most of these white southern males now voted Democratic in reaction to Radical Republican Reconstruction. For most of the next century, the Democratic party would dominate voting in the South, giving rise to the term solid South. The emergence of the solid South gave the Democrats greater power in politics at the national level. In 1876, Democrats nominated Tilden, the governor of New York, to run for President against ... • 6. Ethical Issues with the Ncaa There are several ethical issues in the news lately about the treatment college athletes are receiving compared to the non athletic students of universities. Is the practice of favoring athletes and bending the rules in the favor of universities to enable the best college sports stars to play ethical? Two major ethical issues that have been in the public eye as of late is cheating and grade tampering, and recruiting tactics. Both of these actions are unethical, but it still isn t stopping universities around the country to discontinue in these manners. Cheating and grade tampering is not allowed in any way for a normal student of a university. Why are teachers and administrators helping and giving alternate academic options to athletes?... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I don t know many guys my age who could refuse that situation. But in reality, those recruiting tactics are not morally correct. Not only is it not fair to other schools looking for their next sports star, but athletes will be coming to a university for all the wrong reasons. In conclusion, it is a fact that athletes, especially at larger universities across the country get special treatment in regards to academic issues and lifestyle. Universities will go to any extent to protect their players from being academically ineligible to play, and seems they will do anything to get the best recruits in the country to give their team an advantage. It is hard for the NCAA to enforce strict rules, especially academically because schools have academic freedom which enables universities to make their own classroom policies. The NCAA asks, If a certain institution permits grade changes for students up through and even after the final exam, how do you hold athletes to a different standard? In reality, it is almost impossible to hold athletes to a different standard, and as long as this loop hole exists, colleges will be using any method enticing athletes to come to their school and continue to play through their college career, regardless of their academic status. It is unethical, but until NCAA rules change, who can dictate these procedures are not allowed? Works Cited Associated Press. Documents Link ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Theme Of The Dream In A Midsummer Night s Dream Unlike modern society, in the past, especially in Elizabethan times, your privileges were not as widespread. This included your decision to marry the spouse of your choice. In Elizabethan England, you married the spouse of your parents choice or faced harsh legal consequences. This could include: death, exilement, or becoming a nun. Now ,in modern society, parents still have expectations for their children s spouse. If their children disobey, they may face personal consequences, but in America and England, there is legal freedom to choose your spouse. An example of this is the article Bringing Home the Wrong Race . In this article, an Asian man brings home a Caucasian girl. At first his parents disapprove, but with time she is accepted. In contrast, in A Midsummer Night s Dream, Hermia is in love with Lysander, but her father disapproves and will not budge. These three stories, A Midsummer NIght s Dream, Bringing Home the Wrong Race , and Women in Tudor England, all have similarities and differences that make them alike but unique. Despite their creation being centuries apart, these stories have a lot in common. The main point that is shared between the three is that children bring home a boyfriend or girlfriend that their parents do not approve of. In A Midsummer Night s Dream, Hermia is in love with Lysander, but her father, Egeus, disapproves of this and wants her to marry Demetrius because in those times the parents had the legal final say in their children s ... • 11. Minoan Curricular The horns of a bull appear as a reoccurring theme in Minoan cultic practices and images. The term horns of consecration was an expression given to these symbols by Sir Arthur Evans to describe the ever present images of horns in Minoan sanctuaries, architecture, and art. Religion played a major role in Minoan society with animal sacrifices, music, dance and prayer occurring in caves, on mountain peaks, and in local villas. A central part of the festivals was the sacrificing of a bull to signify the connection of man to nature. Peak sanctuaries first give rise to the image of horns, but as palaces became popular, the adoption of horns helped legitimize the palace s power. The horns of consecration played a major role in Minoan culture, but... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, one theory claims the horns have no connection to the bull at all, but rather the horns are a derivative of the Egyptian symbol illustrating the horizon and mountains. In 1934, Joseph Hazzidakis published his research on the villas at Tylissos and his discovery of four different Minoan horns. Along with this discovery, Hazzidakis also paralleled the shape of the horns to the Egyptian symbol of the horizon. Additionally, Hazzidakis references the seal stone found at Chania, published by Evans, as depicting a divine image due to a male figure shown floating over the horns of consecration with a winged goat and a daemon on his sides which can be seen in figure 3. Hazzidakis claims the lack of a rendering of a sun deity in Minoan art because the deity may be so common that a depiction was unnecessary for the Minoans. Instead, the image of the horns signified the deity and therefore no images of a sun deity were ever created. Yet, Hazzidakis was not the only one to theorize the correlation between the Egyptian symbol and the Minoan horns of consecration. Institutional Environment as a Determinant of Chinese Private Firm Export BehaviorsпјљDoes productivity counter the effect of institutional environment? We introduce institutional environment as a measure of the degree to which policies and institutes in one region differ from those in another region in china, where market are distorted across space and region[1]. We employ a modified heterogeneous firmmodel developed by Mayer and Melitz et al(2011)[12] to examine whether such institutional environment differences affect the firms export behavior. Employing data for china firm level exports in 29 province for which measures of institutional environment can be constructed, we find that better institutional environment enhances firm s export behavior. This results holds for the low level of financial constrains firms, but are reversed by the con export effect of productivity in the aggregate firms and the high level of financial constraints firms. Productivity is found to exert a con export effect that completely offsets the trade enhancing effects of institutional environment. I. Why Is Karl Marx Considered Radical Karl Marx and His Radical Views Karl Marx[i] Karl Marx is among the most important and influential of all modern philosophers who expressed his ideas on humans in nature. According to the University of Dayton, the human person is part of a larger history of life on this planet. Through technology humans have the power to have an immense effect on that life. [ii] The people of his time found that the impact of the Industrial Revolution would further man s success within this world and would ensure his success as a species. Marx also suggests that working men only have time to engage in the basic animalistic tendencies of a quest for survival. He says that man becomes alienated from nature and other humans as well. Marx is basically saying that man lived day by day, by day and he has nothing else to really live for. Marx thought that as the workers grew stronger, they would eventually rebel against the organization. In doing this, they would create a classless society where everyone would be equal and all property would be abolished. The basis of Marxism is the conviction that socialism is inevitable. Marx believed the free enterprise system, or capitalism, was doomed and that socialism was the only option[iv]. Obviously, this was not a favored philosophy with expanding industrialists, entrepreneurs, and existing political systems of the mid nineteenth century [v]. Marx wrote The Communist Manifesto with the German radical, Fredriech Engels, Fredriech Engels[vi] who was also Marx s best friend. This play was first performed sometime between 1588 and 1593, and published sometime in the early 1600s and is based on the protagonist, Faustus, who originates from a classic oral German legend. Doctor Faustus is one of the first of many publications that center on the character that is Faust. • 27. The Generation Of The World Essay This distinction allows Athanasius to argue that the Arians had confused the ideas of offspring with creature and the verbs to beget with to create. What becomes apparent from the above Athanasian text is that the decisive factor which defines the distinction between offspring and creature is the person of the Father and his role in the generation of the Son and the creation of the world. Athanasius task becomes proving that the Father is portrayed in the Bible as personally involved in the generation of the Son as opposed to the creatures who exist outside of him. In this effort he turns to Psalms and examines three texts: Psalm 2:7 ( The Lord said to me, My son you are; today I have begotten you ), Psalm 44:2 ( My heart spoke a good word ), and Psalm 109:3 ( From the womb, before Morning star, I brought you forth ) and synthesizes them with verses speaking of the Father s direct relation to the Son (Matt. 3:17; John 8:42; 6:46). Matt. 3:17, 17:5 The Father s personal relationship with the Son is perhaps nowhere more evident than in the baptism and transfiguration (Mat. 3:17, 17:5; Mark 1:11, 9:7; Luke 3:22, 9:35). Traditionally interpreted along Trinitarian terms Athanasius makes use of this voluntary declaration of the Father with the Son as describing Jesus natural sonship. • 28. Sense Of Blindness HEIGHTENED SENSES IN THE BLIND We as human beings utilize the five senses to process information about our surroundings. These senses help keep us safe. For example, we use our sense of touch to avoid picking up a hot pan, while our senses of smell and taste prevent us from cooking any rotten food in the pan. Our sense of sight allows us to see an oncoming train, while our sense of sound makes it possible to hear the train s horn. Unfortunately, some people are born without the sense of sight, and many others may lose the sense at some point in their lives for various reasons. It is estimated that 1.3 million people in the United States are legally blind, and of the 1.3 million, only 1% are born without the sense of sight (National Federation of the Blind, 2017). Although not having the sense of sight can be devastating, studies have been conducted proving a person s remaining senses can be heightened over those of individuals with normal vision. The length of time a person experiences without their sense of sight seems to impact the enhancement of their other senses. Therefore, we will see a trend in the following studies where participants who are born blind or became blind early in life will often be categorized separately, outperforming sighted individuals, or people with normal vision. The first study involved eight men with early onset blindness and sixteen sighted men in the control group (Cuevas, Plaza, Rombaux, Collignon, De Volder, Renier, 2010). The purpose ... • 30. The Overpopulation Of The Ohio Valley In the United States, about 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters every year. The overpopulation of these animals and the fact that they have no homes leads to about 40% of them being euthanized (ASPCA). This is a global issue, but the root of it can be found within the local community at The Humane Societyof the Ohio Valley. The director of this animal shelter, Kelly Goedel, says that the cause of animal homelessness is primarily the lack of spaying and neutering along with the lack of commitment that pet owners have to their companion (Goedel). Spaying and neutering is sometimes avoided by pet owners because it is an extra expense or they may feel as if it is unnecessary. This challenge leads to an excess in animal populations without there necessarily being and increase in homes for these animals. The challenge of overcoming pet overpopulation becomes even more difficult because of a lack of funding. According to the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley, only about 20 percent of their funding comes from local government (Goedel). Therefore, they are very reliant on donors and community funds to help finance their organization. The funding issue circles back to complicate the process of getting homeless pets spayed and neutered to attempt to solve the root cause of animal overpopulation. Within the years of 1580 and 1763 this force took the form of God. Around this same time was when the Chesapeake and New England colonies were in the process of being founded. As a result, these two settlements did nothing without referencing their actions to God. Due to this heavy focus on God as the reason behind every aspect of their lives, chaos began to sprout soon after the settlers began settling and started living their new lives in the colonies. Since the colonist believed that God dictated their entire lives; they never felt that they were in the wrong. Not once did the colonists stop to think that they had no right to steal the natives land. If God had not smitten them, then they thought that God approved of what they were doing. • 32. The Causes Of Stress In Modern Life The Causes of StressStress is a common issue that many deal with on a daily basis. It is often described as a feeling of being overloaded, tense, and worried. Small amounts of stress can be beneficial, but too much is extremely detrimental. According to Danzae Pace, Stress is the trash of modern life we all generate it, but if you don t dispose of it properly, it will pile up and overtake your life (Pace). This buildup of stressis immensely toxic, and there are many reasons for such a buildup. Stress is primarily caused by three main factors: a person s financial responsibilities, job pressure, and health. Financial stress is a persistent stressor in all of our lives. It is an important source of distress in people s lives due to the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The effect of work related stress is also felt by others, these individuals often include family, friends, and even co workers. Workplace stress not only affects the individual, but has also been estimated to cost the American industry more than 100 billion dollars annually in absenteeism, productivity loss, and health related expenses.Possibly the most major cause of stress is the fear over one s own health, or the wellbeing of a relative or friend. The experience of an illness, and the loss of control over events, can lead to persistent worry about both the current and possible future situations. Paradoxically, the stress caused by one s health worries can lead to problems. Many people also significantly worry about the wellbeing of friends and family, which when affected can create even more stress. It is clear that excess stress leads to many more problems than benefits. Most stress in life can be categorized into three main topics: a person s financial responsibilities, job pressure, and health. • 33. Macbeth Character Analysis In the tragic play Macbeth , by William Shakespeare, a Scottish general named Macbeth was foretold to become king by three witches. In order to secure his kismet, Macbeth commits numerous murders and ultimately is driven by insanity and ambition. In the end, Macbeth is beheaded by Macduff, however a question still lingers on. Was Macbetha monster more inclined to evil than most human beings, or a man who succumbs to temptation by his own expense to suffer the repercussions of his own flaw? Throughout the play Macbeth was tempted, like Adam and Eve, with the promise of power by a force of evil. Although he does give in to this desire, multiple forces pressured him into committing the sinful crime. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth had no selfish thought nor lust for self benefit until the trio of witches approached them with a promise of power. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth was known by his fellow comrades to be a brave, powerful, and ambitious man. Often regarded as brave Macbeth, well he deserved that name (Act 1: Sc 2). Like any other hero, Macbeth was well known and praised for heroic deeds. Although he was highly spoken of, he like many tragic heroes had a flaw. Macbeth was not virtuous. The rate of return for the survey was 18.32% which was less than 1/5th of the students contacted. Womens Rights Violations Women s rights, as defined by the Global Fund for Women, is the right to live free from violence, slavery, and discrimination; to be educated; to own property; to vote; and to earn a fair and equal wage, and in our country, there have been many instances of the violation of these rights, such as sexual harassment, genderdiscrimination, misogyny. These acts can even be seen at different points in the timeline of the Philippine history, be it in the past decades, or at present. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to compare women s rights violations in the Philippines in the context of both the present, and the time of Martial Law. During Martial Law At the time of Martial Law, rights pertaining to women were already present and were those that have already been recognized by the state. Despite having these, the rise of harassment and violations of these rights were not prevented as evidenced by the numerous victims of torture, rape, abduction, and sexual harassment, which in particular, was the prominent act of violence against women. As mentioned by Susan Quimpo upon inquiry, The common thought among women was that rape was the minimum when you are caught and you are a woman. There was even an SOP with the military where they were allowed to molest or basically rape women when caught, and this instance alone shows how women are not only sexualized, but likewise how there is much disregard of the rights they have not to live in discrimination and violence. This Women s History class altered my perspectives, introduced me to significant changes, and gave me the knowledge to know what my obligations are as a womantoday. My perspectives have changed towards multiple different events in Women s History. One of the most interesting topics, and biggest events to me personally, would be in regards to women s rights. The reasoning for this includes my personal view change on the Equal Rights Amendment itself. I have been pro women s equal rights my entire life, and that will never change. However, I have also been pro Equal Rights Amendment, and that changed from the teachings in this class. From now knowing how important the role was that women had on society, there would not be anything I would change. We needed women to be home to raise and care for the children, clean the house, and cook. It was not always possible for both men and women to work when kids were needing to be raised. Similarly, mentioned in this book, and throughout the teachings, was the importance of the women s role to the civil war. If women and men were completely equal, both the men and women would be drafted into the war. We would not have had the women to nurse and care for those wounded. If we did, there would be a very limited amount. The book states in Chapter 5 Primary Sources, The most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In Barry Levinson s film Wag the Dog and Michael Moore s documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 , it is clear that the perspectives in which the audience views the world create particular conflicts. In both texts, the conflicting perspectives arise from the way the naГЇve public views the world and the way that the government and media view the world through their particular agendas. One of the most popular genres of music is rap or also known as hip hop. Hip hop music has a profound effect, both positive and negative on many of today s youth which transforms and evolves American culture and society. What started it all was the origin of gangsta rap , which was popularized by gangster rappers such as Tupac Shakur, Notorious BIG, Ma$e, Snoop Dogg, and Scarface. These were all rappers who influenced American culture and made the genre of rap and hip hop more mainstream which captivated many listeners not only on a local level, but on an international level. However, some of the lyrics that were stated were not only meaningful, but sometimes controversial in the eye of the general public. Nonetheless, hip hop music has always had an influence on many generations and their shaping of what we know today of the modern American society and culture. Early 90 s rap music had a negative influence on American society due to the vulgar acts and explicit language that was used to describe stories and other elements of rap. In the late 1980 s and early 1990 s, hip hop only had one tag to itself gangster rap. Approximately 60 years ago when shopping malls were first built, it was expected to be the gleaming symbols of America s future. Shopping malls were created to lure customers from the city into the suburbs; thus allowing shopping be done under one roof. However, according to recent studies conducted by Green Street Advisors, 10 percent of the nation s 1,000 enclosed malls will fail by 2022. Although this may not seem detrimental, once the malls begin to disappear, shoppers will be limited to where they shop. Shopping malls are becoming extinct because of change in generation, economic issues, and the closing of major anchor stores. As we enter a new generation, shoppers are gearing toward online and mobile shopping, which contributes to the extinction of shopping malls. America reached a time period where the number of adults who were born in a time where online shopping was not thought of are retiring; resulting in old habits, such as shopping in malls, coming to a cease. The older generation of adults tend to revert back to familiar habits such as shopping at malls or going to a bookstore. • 50. Notes On Sound And Noise 2.1SOUND AND NOISE: Sound is the variation of pressure in an elastic medium (such as air) caused by a mechanical disturbance. The movement of molecules in a transmitting medium caused by a disturbance results in pressure oscillations above (compressions) and below (rarefactions) the ambient pressure level. The oscillation of sound pressure variations is referred to as a sound wave. A sound wave will move through an ideal medium longitudinally and omnidirectionally. The oscillation frequency of a sound wave determines the pitch of a sound, which is measured in Hertz (Hz). The healthy human ear can typically discern frequencies between 20 and 20,000 Hz. The amplitude of the pressure oscillations of a sound wave describes the amount of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hard surfaces such as smooth wood or metal often reflect sound waves well but attenuate sound poorly. Conversely, soft, porous surfaces usually reflect sound waves poorly but attenuate sound waves well. Reflected sound waves can increase the overall SPL in an area, as the reflected wave essentially becomes an additional sound source. Sound behaves predictably in the far field (i.e., far enough away from individual sound sources relative to the size of the sound sources) and most sound measurement equipment can only accurately measure SPLs in the far field. The measurement of sound generated by a source within a reflective chamber (reverberant field) is more difficult because the large number of reflections increase the overall SPL if the measurement is also made within the reflective chamber. SPLs measured in the reverberant field of the ear cannot directly be compared to SPLs in the free field without first compensating for the higher SPLs at certain frequencies caused by the resonance of the ear canal. 2.2AUDITION: Audition, or the perception of sound, is accomplished via the complex transformation from sound pressure waves to electrical nerve impulses and interpretation in the brain. The superior groups are the ones that are privileged in society and the inferior ones are ones that are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though one would think that because Woodruff is male, he would have a lot of privileges, this is not the case. Woodruff s race eliminates any privileges he might have, especially when faced against seven white boys. Woodruff finds himself almost powerless to the boys when he witnesses them commit a crime. Petry writes, Woodruff thought, There are seven of them, young, strong, satanic. He ought to go home where it was quiet and safe, mind his own business a black man s business; leave this white man s problem for a white man, leave it alone, don t interfere... (2257). This statement clearly shows the racial differences and how Woodruff is aware that he should not interfere. Later in the short story Petry explains that Woodruff ended up staying silent about the crime because he feared the white boys. Petry states, They knew he wasn t going to the police about any matter which involved sex and a white girl, especially where there was the certainty that all seven of them would accuse him of having relations with the girl (2263). It is clear that Woodruff s race set him back from having any privileges. This relates to the matrix of domination because it demonstrates the complexity of privilege. It shows how same system of privilege can make one superior but at the same time make one inferior. • 54. A Literary Analysis Of Atonement By Ian Mcewan Atonement Published in 2002 by Ian McEwan, Atonement presents readers with a story of love and war, childhood and class, guilt and forgiveness (McEwan back cover). In this narrative, a ripple effect of unfortunate events occurs after a thirteen year old girl named Briony falsely accuses someone of raping her cousin Lola. Through the character s actions, the readers come to understand that one cannot change the past, even if they seek atonement with the highest amount of effort. Ian McEwan does an excellent job of presenting this theme by shifting through different perspectives, using symbolism, and showing the metamorphosis of the characters, specifically in Briony. Over the course of McEwan s perspective shifting narrative, we find characters, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The theme and truth is that there was an absence of atonement in Atonement (Pastoor 1) and the recognition that one could attempt to achieve it, but might never actually get there. One cannot change the past or justify one s actions in the process of obtaining atonement. However, one can try to do the right thing and learn from one s mistakes, and even pass on those mistakes so that others do not imitate them just like how Briony wrote about the consequences of her mistakes in her novels. She was not selfish enough to give herself a happy ending by letting Cecilia and Robbie forgive her, but she gave Cecilia and Robbie a happy ending. If Robbie and Cecilia are dead, as many readers presume from Briony s statements, then let their deaths not be in vain through her stories, but if they are alive, then it would be ideal for them to read her story and truly forgive her for this might be the closest and only way to obtain some sort of ... • 55. Ultra Running Research Paper Ultra running is an extreme sport enjoyed by few that involves pushing the human body to its limits by running distances further than a standard twenty six point two mile marathon. The modern marathon race and distance came from Greek history when a soldier named Phidippides ran 26.2 miles from the town of Marathonto the capital of Greece, Athens to deliver a message. Although running extreme distances was sometimes a necessity in ancient times, modern ultra runners simply have a love for it. Some popular ultra marathon races include: the Leadville Trail 100, the Badwater 135, the Le Grand Raid, and the Jungle Ultra. The men and women who enjoy these races are quite different from the average person or even the occasional runner. Ultra runners put themselves through rigorous training and pay very close attention to their diet and nutritional intake. Another trait that sets ultra runners apart from the average person is their mindset and great mental strength. Ultra runners receive happiness from the physical exertion of running extensive distances. Although ultra runners are generally healthier than the average American, there are some health problems that come from running extreme distances, including: increased stress fractures in the feet, increased allergies, and increased asthma. • 56. Sir Gawain And The Green Knight Archetype Analysis There are a number of many different archetypes found in works of fiction and nonfiction that bestow upon the hero his true role in a work of literature. In the Middle English, chivalric romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Gawain s role as the hero emboldens as the story describes more and more archetypes of the quest. The monomyth can be described as the three step process that the hero takes in completing the quest motif. The basic template is supported by separation, initiation, and return: which might be named the nuclear unit of the monomyth (Campbell 28). Each of these three categories contain other subcategories, which help understand the different archetypical situation within the work itself. An understanding of three key archetypes the magic weapon, the boon, and the unhealable wound reveal the essence of Gawain s role within the archetypal quest motif. The magic weapon in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is the the green girdle. The green girdle was bestowed upon Gawain by the host s wife. However, as the story concludes we soon find out that this young lady ends up being the Green Knight s wife. The green girdle symbolizes safeness or a value of being safe. Between there meeting the young lady explains, For whatever Knight is girded with this green lace, while he bears it knotted about him there is no man under heaven can overcome him, for he may not be slain for any magic on earth (Weston 31). The young lady gives Gawain the green girdle after he refuses to take the ring that is offered to him. Since Gawain fails to exchange the girdle with Bertilak as the terms of the men s agreement dictate, it also symbolizes Gawain s desperate desire to survive at the expense of his code of honor. Only after Gawain fails the Green Knight s test does this meaning become clear to him. With the power of the green girdle by his side and his mind set forth on his destiny, Gawain heads out with the guide to find the Green Knight. About half way through the ride the guide asks Gawain whether he would decide to slide out of his scenario with the Green Knight. As they reach the border of the forest, the guide promises not to tell anyone if Gawain decides to give up the quest. Gawain refuses, determined to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
