Causes Of Migration In The World Economy Of 1870-1914
Although I explained the occurrence of wage difference between Europe and the new world,
having only one data of evidence is just not enough. As an economic student, further information
is needed to support the argument in the above paragraph. Since we already know income in the
new world would increase over the period of 1870 to 1914, I would like to investigate the cause
of it, why was it increasing when mass migration started and the population in the new world
(US here at an example) began to grow rapidly. Based on the numbers provided in Table 1
(Heitger, B. (1993, February). Migration in the World Economy of 1870 1914 [Electronic version].
, 129(3), 1 10.), US experienced positive immigrations from all the sending countries in Europe,
which confirmed that the population of the emigration received was indeed growing and led to
the overall population growth. If the US population was growing, what happened to the real
wage? Let me form a simple economic model with only downward sloping demand and upward
sloping supply for both US and one of a European nation. At, equilibrium their intersection
determines the real wage. Since we are talking about migration, let us assume we only have human
movement between two nations. Machine and capitals are excluded by this analysis. By looking at
TableA2 (Heitger, B. (1993, February). Migration in the World Economy of 1870 1914 [Electronic
version]. , 129(3), 1 10.), we know that almost all European countries have higher population

The Australian Consumer Law and Consumer Guarantees
The Australian Consumer Law (ACL) was established to protect consumers in any legal trading
activities in Australia. A set of guarantees has also been introduced for those consumers who are
acquiring goods and services from Australian suppliers, importers or manufacturers. The guarantees
are intended to ensure that consumers will receive the goods or services they have paid for. If they
have problems with the products and services they bought, they are entitled for remedies, such as
repair, replacement, and refund.
As regulations keep changing, it is important to note that consumer guarantees are only applicable
for goods and services purchased on or after 1st January 2011. The laws that applied before 1st
January 2011 might cover any ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, the total price has to be clearly stated in the payment receipt (Australian Completion and
Consumers Commission, 2013)
How acceptable is the quality of products and services?
Consumers are guaranteed to receive products and services that do not provide any harm to them.
For products, the quality of products has to be acceptable, fit for the purposes, match with the
sample, description and demonstration. More importantly, the products and services have to be
matched and fit as what the staff said.
There was a case in 1936, according to Carvan, J (2010) Dr. Grant, the plaintiff, suffered dermatitis,
as a result of wearing woolen underpants which had been manufactured by the defendant
(Australian Knitting Mills Ltd). Later, there was defective element in the underpants that assumed
as the cause of the dermatitis. Grant successfully sued knitting because the quality of the product
was not acceptable.
Staffs have to honour consumers guarantee, including express and extended warranties (Australian
Consumer Law, 2013)
How long are the products warranties and can it be extended?
Warranties of products are vary to each other and normally is one year. However, there are specific
products that have warranty period greater than one year, such as car and furniture.
A warranty of a product can be extended by providing additional protection or to lengthen the
coverage of the manufacturer s

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Crisis
Crisis refers to a person s reaction to a particular event. One person might be deeply affected
while the other has little or no ill effects to the same event. It presents a obstacle, threat or trauma
but at the same time it gives opportunity for either growth or decline. The events that trigger a
crisis can be from a wide range of life experiences, from development hurdles such as puberty to
natural disasters to the death of a loved one. When people face a crisis, they can experience a
range of physical and physiological symptoms as well as changes in their normal routines and
relationships. Crisis intervention refers to the immediate and temporary methods used to help the
individual or the group affected by the crisis. It refers to the methods which helps to reduce the

This stage can generally be the most challenging to achieve in crisis intervention. Clients in crisis,
by definition, shortfall in the equanimity to review the entire perspective and tend to firmly clasp to

stage five has been accomplished, the client in crisis has apparently worked through sufficient
feelings and emotions to resume some emotional balance. Now, the crisis interventionist and client

essential to keep in mind that these alternatives are better when they are produced collaboratively
and when the alternatives chosen are owned by the client. The crisis interventionist without doubt
can look into what the client has found that helps in akin circumstances. Solution focused therapy
techniques, such as Amplifying Solution Talk (DeJong Berg, 1998) can be integrated into Stage

Prevention, Detection And Diagnosis Of Periodontal Disease
The most recent NHANES survey, conducted in 2012, estimated the prevalence of periodontitis in
adults aged thirty to seventy to be 47.2%.[1] This survey did not include younger age groups, in
which aggressive periodontitis is more often seen. Aggressive periodontitis has been reported to
affect 0.2 10% of the population below twenty one years of age in African American and Hispanic
subpopulations.[2] If left untreated, chronic and aggressive forms of periodontitiscan lead to tooth
loss and may contribute to the etiology and/or progression of certain systemic inflammatory
diseases.[3, 4] In current periodontal practice, detection and diagnosis of periodontal diseaseis
mainly derived from a comprehensive clinical examination in combination with a review of patient
medical and dental history. An accurate periodontal diagnosis is the first step in the development of
a well designed and suitable treatment plan for management of a patient with a periodontal disease.
Based on the current classification provided by the American Academy of Periodontology(AAP),
published in 1999, severity of periodontitis is based on the amount of clinical attachment loss
(CAL) as follows: slight 1 2 mm, moderate 3 4 mm, and severe ≥ 5 mm. Attachment loss is
measured by adding the pocket probing depth and the amount of recession. [5] In clinical practice,
however, measurement of CAL has proven to be difficult and time consuming. Though it is the
currently accepted system, academicians,

Comparing Paganism And Wicca Religion
Paganism and Wicca are full of many traditions and simple culture. Though the two may be
different religions they correlate with each other. Wicca is in a way based off the pagan religion
and is very open and easy to practice if you practice another religion. Wicca celebrates the seasons
and has many holidays. Bothe Wiccaand Paganism celebrate what s around us and are very
interesting religions sense they have so much variety and importance as to how most people now
celebrate holidays.
Paganism and/or Wicca and witchcraft are very free and loose religions and have many traditions.
What I mean by free and loose is that they allow you to make your own rules when practicing and
learning about the religion. Wicca is a nature based religion ... Show more content on

Another custom in Wicca is the belief that the divine spirit is in everything, people, plants

that they are all around us, I the earth, trees, waters exc. Many wiccans practice their magic in
covens of three to thirteen people. And many wiccans believe strongly in karma, whatever you
put your energy into, negative or positive it will come back to you. The main idea of Wicca is to
be kind and good to the things around you, and good thing will come back to you.
In a way, the concept of Christmas came from Wicca and Pagan traditions, and the concept of
Halloween too. Pagans decided that thaw winter solstice, or yule would be on the 25 of
December and that it would celebrate the sun and new hopes. Halloween traditions that came
from paganism and Wicca includes carving pumpkins to scare away bad spirits, and dressing up
which also keeps bad spirits away from you. Most wiccans and Pagans dressed up in darker cloaks

The Difference Between Civil Rights And Civil Rights
I noted that the U.S. civil liberties, as well as, U.S. civil rights are generally located in the first ten
amendments to the Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights, as well as, the Fourteenth
Amendment. The distinction between civil liberties and civil rights is blurred since the concepts
are used interchangeably, even though they refer to different kinds of guaranteed protections. Civil
liberties are protections against government actions. Whereas civil rightsrefer to positive actions
governments should take to create equal conditions. The primary objective of this essay is to
distinguish between civil rights and civil liberties. In this essay, I present a case related to the
civil right to free expression or creation of equal conditions in forum 4.1. Whereas in forum 4.2 I
present a provision of the US Patriot Act related to civil liberties or protections against federal
government action.

The Effects Of Video Games On The Video Game Industry
An Atmosphere Unknown This is the future of the video game industry. Imagine looking
through the eyes of your favorite video game character but in reality, you are actual sitting on
the couch. Look to the left and you see R2 D2 trying to communicate to you. To the right, you
have rebel fighters shooting at storm troopers that are attacking your home planet. Virtual reality
lets you do all of this from the comfort of your home. However, Augmented reality lets you do
this as well, but it is less virtual and more technological. Imaging walking down the street and
you see a Pikachu on the side of the road through technology based glasses. You are in the real
world, but it is modified by the use of a computer. How has Virtual and Augmented reality?
evolved the video games industry ? The history of video games goes all the way back to the
1930 s when the first coin operated entertainment was invented. The first pinball machines were
invented during this time and are still around with us today in arcades and bars around the
world. Video games around that time were actually called Electromechanical games.
Electromechanical gaming graphics were only as good as artists could draw them. However,
Electromechanical games were very limited. There was hard labor in assembling the games
because of their use of motors, coins, and mechanical brackets. Also, the cost of these components
were on the rise. Luckily, in the early 1960 s, Steve Russell programmed a PDP 1 to play a game

Is The Difference Between Hawthorne And Edgar Allan Poe s...
Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Edgar Allen Poe s works were unlike any style of writing that I have
come across. The gothic style era of literature was defiantly intriguing, and sometimes even
creepy to read. I will say that, it absolutely held my attention while I was reading. As I first read
Poe s works, I noticed that he very much so enjoyed writing in the darkest, and sometimes the
most morbid form possible. Dark romantic novels such as, The Oval Portrait, and Ligeia shocked
me. It is very easy to see the different elements between Nathaniel Hawthorne work, and Edgar
Allen Poe s works. I believe that Hawthorne enjoyed writing mainly romances, sometimes
containing a gothic elements. Poe seems as though he wrote romance gothic style novels, but with a
twist. He enjoyed throwing supernatural aspects into his works as well as unexplainable events,
omens, portents, and visions. Nathaniel Hawthorne s work, The Birthmark and Edgar Allen Poe s

This is much different from The Oval Portrait because there was no way a reader could see any
foreshadowing events take place. The outcome in The Oval Portrait was surprising, I never
imagined the ending that did take place. A difference in The Birthmark it contained a woman in
distress. The reader was able to visualize Georgiana s passing in lines such as, My poor Aylmer,
she repeated, with a more than human tenderness, you have aimed loftily; you have done nobly.
Do not repent that with so high and pure a feeling, you have rejected the best the earth could offer.
Aylmer, dearest Aylmer, I am dying! (Hawthorne, Nathaniel.) These lines represented a much
different ending than what we had seen in The Oval Portrait. Georgiana had somewhat of closure
with her husband, where as the wife in The Oval Portrait just dies and we are left feeling

Religion Has Been A Major Force In The History Of The United
Religion has been a major force in the history of the United States and in settling the colonies of
America in many ways. Religion was definitely one of the major reasons for the founding of the
colonies. The early colonists wanted the freedom to worship God as they had seen as proper, and
they were promised this freedom of worship. Most of these colonies were deeply rooted in their
religious beliefs. Religionwas a powerful influence on the social and political life of the colonial
times in the New World. Typically, in the colonies, the church was a large building in the middle of
a town and was used for town meetings and community gatherings in addition to worship. During
this time, a church was the first building to go up, and the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Quakers and Puritans moved from their homes in Europe and England because of the
unfairness in their religious beliefs. They sought to reform the Anglican religious practice, which
was to purify the church and later became known as the Puritans (Wood). They demanded for the
removal of all Roman Catholic rituals and wanted to simplify religion to its basics (Shi, 42). The
Puritans landed in American where new colonies were created. The Puritans did not accept those
that believed differently than they did. They left England because they refused to worship in
Anglican churches. The Puritans refused the Quakers and any others citizenship who believed in a
different form of worship. The Quakers had also refused to support the Church of England and were
under the leadership of William Penn. The Quakers stamped their values on the government of
Pennsylvania. Other Puritans that were not as radical in their religious views later formed
settlements along the Massachusetts Bay (Wood).
The Pilgrims main reason in coming to America was that they were searching for the freedom to
worship. The Pilgrims, defined as a person who journeys to a place for religious reasons, were also
known as Separatists. The Separatists were with the Pilgrims who traveled across the Atlantic and
settled the first permanent English settlement, Plymouth Colony in New England. The Separatists
required that each congregation rule itself and not be controlled by a bureaucracy

Safepac Case Study
Introduction
Ok so in this paper I will be looking at the Simply Green Product brand and seeing what can be
done with their company as far as their patenting and packaging of their product SafePac. So there
is a lot of information that will be covered here. Also we have to look at the time frame that SGB
was using the SafePac logo, on their equipment. The other thing is that we have to look at the
trademark and the other laws that incorporate trademarks and patents. So listed below is the topics
that I would like to discuss briefly.
1.Deciding if SGP can register their product name as a trademark.
2.Would the Trademark Dilution Revision Act be violated if the USTPO granted the trademark on
SafePac?
3.Tell whether or not the anticyber squatting consumer protection act would be violated by the use

Because there is already a mark that is listed by the USPTO. This mark was first used in 2002
which is 6 years to the senior of SafePac, and SGP. Because of its seniority they have a claim to it
and it would add a little confusion if SGP would to market it. Because there would then be two
products out there with the same name, possibly cost some business for both companies. Here
there would be a minor hit on the Lanham act, which was put into place to protect legit business,
so that they can keep using their ideas, and investments. The reason why I say that is a minor hit is
because even not knowing that this was already in use they have a responsibility to the preexisting
company and name of their product. Even though there is no completion, and they are two separate
spectrums of services. Still the idea was first thought of by Safe Choice.

Homelessness And The Homeless Youth
Homelessness is a major problem in the United States. An incredibly vulnerable group is the
homeless youth due to their young age and lack of education. According to Edidin, Ganim,
Hunter, Karnik (2012) on any particular night in the United States there are ~2 million homeless
youth living on the streets, in shelters, or in other temporary accommodation. Youth become
homeless for multiple reasons whether it be because they have aged out of foster care, ran from
home, were kicked out of their home, or because they have become homeless along with their
family members. Within the umbrella categorization of homeless youth there are high at risk
subgroups, common misconceptions, and a serious concern of lack of support and medical
services. Homeless youth face an abundance of challenges, especially if they are on their own,
such as finding food, shelter, income, and potential medical expenses. Some youth experience
additional hardship by facing the effects of abuse they endured at their previous place of residence.
According to the National Conference of State Legislators (2013) 46 percent of runaway and
homeless youth reported physical abuse, 38 percent reported emotional abuse, and 17 percent
reported being forced into unwanted sexual activity by a family or household member. Therefore,
the chances of emotional vulnerability are high. A common misconception of homeless youth is
that even if they do become homeless they are not homeless for long. The National Alliance to End

Satire In The Importance Of Being Ernest
It s tone is that of satire, but of a satire which, for lack of a moral point of view, has lost its sting
(Edouard Roditi)
To what extent do you agree with this response to the play?
By Molly Campbell
With the definition of a satire being, the use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose
and criticize people s stupidity , it is ludicrous to even propose that The Importance of Being
Earnest is anything other than a satirical play, as the characters relishing in the upper class of the
Victorian period unknowingly mock their own habits acquired to them due to the luxury they are
spoilt with. Despite this, it is evident that the use of satire is feckless and lacks a moral point of
view, in contrast with the moral ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Previous to Wilde s The Importance of Being Earnest, Victorian comedies consisted mostly of
high and low comedy and of dirty or vulgar jokes, dirty gestures, and sex . Hence, it is possible to
suggest that contradictory to Edouard Roditi s interpretation, the Importance of Being Earnest
carries a moral point of view in the fact it does not exploit sex or sexual preferences to effectuate
drollery; Wilde provokes laughter through mistaken identities and the consequences of
bunburying perhaps to allude that his opinions it that sexuality is not a laughing matter.
Providing this interpretation is true, it is acceptable to assume that the reasoning behind the
negative criticisms the drama received when first written were due to the fact critics felt
appalled that a piece of writing could prove successful without it consisting of any sexual nature
and hence deemed The Importance of Being Earnest as, dull in comparison to other plays read
over the years . Howbeit, some critics state that the word earnest became a code word for
homosexual, as in: Is he earnest? , in the same way that Is he so? and Is he musical? were also
employed , suggesting that The Importance of Being Earnest is an expression of Wilde s hatred
for marriage and his fondness of homosexuality as he praises the idea of being Earnest . This

College Is The Best For College Essay
High school students who are just getting ready to graduate have two choices, either start
working or go to college. Many of those students who want to go to college have to choose what
college they want to go to. Deciding which college to go to can be a hard choice, since going to
college is a big decision to make. Students know that going to collegeis going to be harder than high
school. The atmosphere is different, and many students are on their own after they make that
college choice. Being hundreds of miles away from home can put stress on the student. Once they
feel this stress, grades and the confidence of the student go down. From the Education Partnerships
Inc., they state The best preparation for college is still a solid high opportunity to develop
academic and study skills that can help assure college success (1). These students need help by
trying to figure out a solution that can best fit their needs. For students to get a higher education
they need to accommodate special learning skills that will enlighten the students mind into
getting a degree they want. High school students who learn how to collaborate with these
particular skills will end up going to a college of their choice, get a better GPA, and have a
higher paying job as a reward for the hard work that they showed. High school students who are
juniors or seniors are told that college or real life is right around the corner, and don t take those

Is Equality for All a Realistic and Desirable Aim Within...
Equality exists in many contexts. It can exist in the political level; individuals have the same
rights under the law. It can exist in a social level, between categories of people, for example
gender, or race. It can even exist on an individual level, as to how each person is treated. Equality
cannot be confined to simply equal opportunities for all; for an equal and fair process is still
equality. An equal and fair result is also equality. At each of the different level, equality shifts from
being realistic or being desirable, sometimes both, or sometimes neither.
Modern societies often take for granted that social quality is desirable. Democratic values mean

Hence one could argue that a certain degree of equality has been reached.
The same case can be made for racial tolerance. In the 19th Century wherein America was rife with
racial discrimination against the Afro Americans, there was strong opposition to even a mere
suggestion of equality between В‘blacks and В‘whites . In modern American, one can hardly see
any signs of the touchy issue that tore the nation into two in the past. In both these cases,
education over a long period of time is a clear factor; people gradually accept change. From
known examples like Sri Lanka and Rwanda, where ethnic conflict is rampant, it is not realistic to
expect change through imposing equality onto people through state policies. However, what the
previous two examples have shown is that too a certain degree it is realistic to aim for equality,
given amply time to change the mindsets of the people. How long would have to depend on the
extent some mentalities are rooted in people.
But just how equal are those two examples. In a sense they too do not reflect equality properly.
For example, there is still a slight degree, not of discrimination, but of expectations accorded to
the genders. In some companies, they prefer men because women have to be allowed to take paid
maternity leave, or least they might choose to leave the company in order to take care of children,

Language Arts
Language and Art share many similar tendencies. In language, as with earlier forms of Art,
representation plays a large role. Language acts as a representation of some elaborate envisioned
concept(s), Writing as a representation of a sounded phonic language, and Art as a representation of
some subject(s). Within these mediums exist elements that make Art and Language and, by
extension, Writing successful. оЃўese are the signifiers. оЃўe signifiers are built imperfectly, they
summon up signs other than those intended based on frequency of usage, misusage and place
contextually. оЃўey are influenced by a multitude of extra textual forces. It is from these axioms,

оЃўe essence remains wanting and exists always in some transcendental plane.
Art and Philosophy aim to defamiliarise the viewer or reader to some established norm. Philosophy
aims to describe things that are fundamental nature of knowledge, existence and ethics (Webster s

through a complex system of resonance between signs that philosophy can be successful and hone
the right tone of capturing a desired essence. оЃўe abandoned sired signs are leо‚ќ to the side,
defamiliarised and alienated to yield a complete perception of one concept at the sacrifice of several.
F. S. Hussain / ENGL411. (Begley) / 1. DiffГ©rance as de familiarisation (19th Feb. 10)3
Derrida s essay, for example, wishes to point out how diffГ©rance in signs can point to something
completely extra textual. All of his references that he sacrifices to produce a value of diffГ©rance
are outside and pre produced.
In the same vein, Art wishes to hone the viewer s attention to some smaller aspect of the larger
canvas or something completely outside. Take Picasso s 1937 painting La Guernica, the aesthetic
aim was for the signifiers (the magnified Cubist heads) to signify the terror of the Spanish Civil
War, an action completely extra textual. In Literature, the works of James Joyceinvoke something
outside of the discourse. Ivy Day in the Committee Room from о‚»e Dubliners

The Organizational Forms Of New Zealand Agricultural Sector
New Zealand has a long farming history and agriculture has been one of the country s largest
economic sectors, with 95 percent of the dairy products being exported contributing to about 30
percent of the world s trade (MAF, 2003). The land reforms which happened between late 19th and
early 20th century emerged a large number of small and medium sized farms for the purpose of
promoting the wealth of the settler society (Hamer, 1988). As a result of the introduction of
refrigeration which boomed farm productivity (Greasley Oxley, 2008), these small family famers
have come together to create rural cooperatives in order to provide better commodity chains for
their export products, and eventually to protect their own interests (Hunter, 2005). Following the
deregulation of New Zealand s agricultural sector which started from 1984, both organizing, family
farming and cooperatives have gone through major transformations. This essay aims to analyze both
organizational forms in New Zealand agricultural sector, in terms of how both are shaped by
economic, political and ideological in the society, thus providing a better understanding of the
similarities, differences and the tensions created between both economic units.
Family farming and cooperative organizations are different in the way their profits are distributed.
Academic theorists such as Grasson and Errington have differentiated family farms from
cooperative farms on the basis of economic value returns such as the business

President Eisenhower and his staff then started to set up a plan for the support of Vietnam.

What I ve only just begun to realize is that these two extremes represent different sides of the same
coin. While popular culture tends to disempower women by telling them they must dress to get men
to look at them, the modesty culture tends to disempower women by telling them they must dress
to keep men from looking at them.It is important here to make a distinction between attraction and
lust. Attraction is a natural biological response to beauty; lust obsesses on that attraction until it
grows into a sense of ownership, a drive to conquer and claim. When Jesus warns that everyone
who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart, he uses the
same word found in the Ten Commandments to refer to a person who covets his neighbor s
property. Lust takes attraction and turns it into the coveting of a woman s body as though it
were property. And men are responsible for their own thoughts and actions when this happens;
they don t get to blame it on what a woman is wearing. Many discussions of modesty, from
diverse cultural or religious perspectives, revolve around the idea of keeping sinful and unholy
female bodies and body parts from the gaze of others particularly men. This privileges the male
gaze, in a backward sort of way, and puts females at a disadvantage for being the ones in control
of what others think or feel when seeing their bodies. When we speak of modesty

MusГ©e des Beaux Arts by W. H. Auden Essay
Suffering is embedded in our daily lives. There are devastating things going on in our daily
environments and yet, people seldom realize this as they occupy themselves with other tasks. W.H.
Auden s, MusГ©e des Beaux Arts, is a statement on human perceptions and how we use them to
observe, or block out humansuffering. While we are doing ordinary things like eating, or opening a
window, bad things can be happening to others and it is as easy as looking up, to see what is
actually going on. Auden illustrates societies indifference to human suffering through the form of
his poem and by alluding to artwork that compares human perceptions and juxtaposes ordinary
images with images of suffering and tragedy. The form of MusГ©e des Beaux Arts... Show more

The lines are enjambed with phrases stopping in the middle of new lines and lines spilling into
other lines. The lines do not pause to acknowledge the end of sentences like people seldom pause
their daily lives to acknowledge the suffering of those around them. Auden also uses bad syntax
in the last line of the poem, had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on. Auden may have
chosen to write in this free form to demonstrate that people are so indifferent to what is going on
around them that it does not make any difference what form the poem is written in, as it will
only be overlooked and not given any attention. The form of the poem allows the reader to
consider the ways in which suffering is masked by the frenzy of everyday life and that even the
acknowledged suffering of others does not seem to be of any concern to anybody but the sufferer.
Auden s poem is a criticism of human perceptions and how we use them to detect, or suppress
human suffering. In the first half of the poem Auden compares versions of indifference by
portraying youth and age, animals, and humans (Shmoop, 2014). In the first few lines of the poem,
Auden comments on the perceptions of the Old Masters and how they were never wrong in their
discernment of suffering. He then compares the old masters perceptions to the perceptions of
children and animals and how they are unaware of,

Examples Of Glitches In World Of Warcraft
World of Warcraft has some of my favorite examples of glitches that add to the gameplay
experience, bugs that cause frustration, and some flaws that are just bizarre. One example of a
bug making WoW more fun was wall walking , which allowed players access to areas of terrain
that are supposed to be inaccessible. Techniques involving running up against hills and jumping,
angling the camera in different ways, and even toggling from running to walking can grant players
access to areas of the world that are barren or incomplete.
Of the many bizarre bugs in WoW, one that provided for some memorable experiences was the
moving corpse glitch. Generally, when a player dies, their only options are to wait for a
resurrection from a fellow player or

The Impact Of The San Francisco Earthquake Of 1906
The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 and Recovery.
What did the people of San Francisco suffer after the earthquake of 1906? In order to answer this
question, we need to know what the San Francisco earthquake was. The San Francisco earthquake
happened in 1906 with a magnitude of 7.8 and caused a fire that burned for 7 days. This was the
biggest recorded earthquake in San Francisco. The foreshock started at 5:12am and 25 seconds
later the earthquake started that lasted 40 to 60 seconds, with most San Franciscans asleep in
rooms, they became trapped with only their hope to save them. The earthquake and fire of San
Francisco in 1906 will go down as one of the worst earthquakes in the United States history. It s
after affects can still be felt in the California area.
The San Francisco earthquake caused quite a lot of damage in the area, but what is an earthquake?
An earthquake is the movement of tectonic plates along a transform boundary and what plate is
California sitting on? The Pacific Plate which is not connected to the North American plate and the
plate boundary is a transform boundary. Earthquakes occur so often there that people say it is like
a rainstorm that is ignored. The place where the Pacific Plate is grinding along with the North
American Plate is called the San Andreas Fault. As stated before the earthquake had a magnitude
of 7.8 which caused so much destruction a fire broke out. Nobody really knows where the fire
started but it burned for 7 days and scorched over 500 city blocks leaving the once proud and
powerful city into dust. The combination of the earthquake and fire is said to have killed Over
700 deaths by the earthquake and fire is now believed to be an understatement the total loss of life
by a factor of 3 or 4. (The Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.)
Even before the earthquake people saw suspicious things with animals. For example, Lisa A.
Chippendale in her book The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, quoted Sergeant Cook who stated
The horses seemed skittish, frequently neighing and nervously pulling at their reins. Many people
were asleep in the time of the shock. By the first shock some shot up and tried to get their clothes
on, but their struggle was in vain, they could

The Punishment of Malvolio Essay
In Shakespeare s play, Twelfth Night, the characters endure the fruits of their foolishness at the
end of the play, but Malvolio endures a greater suffering and greater embarrassment than the rest
of the characters. This is not simply by chance or whimsy: but this is Shakespeare s stratification
of the vices that a person may take upon him or herself. With this stratification, Shakespeare
allocates Malvolio s vices of pride, usurping the social order, and dour temperament as the worst of
character flaws, and that is why Malvolio receives the harshest punishment. Before examining the
punishment that Malvolio endures, it is necessary to examine his flaws and offenses. His arrival in
the play is with criticism of Feste, and that initial... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Malvolio is treading the ground of criminal offense against a lord, who is also the cousin of his
Lady. Beyond the offense upon the higher strata of society, Malvolio is also demonstrating his
dour temperament in this scene which is also problematic. The importance of mirth and joviality
is affirmed throughout the play, and for some characters, their greatest virtue is the ability to
enjoy and be passionate for life. Malvolio stands in opposition to this with his protests and
derision, and in the play he is the only character that takes offense to other characters enjoying
their lives. The hostile environment he creates is important to note because it gives the other
characters an impetus to deal with his troublesome personality in order to enjoy their own
pleasures and pursuits. The last encounter where Malvolio extends his grievances is the second
encounter with Sir Toby. Their encounter takes place after Malvolio s pride is incensed by the
false note of Olivia, so his actions go even further in displaying his own ego and lack of regard
for his superiors. Not only does he instruct Sir Toby and Maria to, go hang yourselves, (III.iv.120)
but he also claims that he is no longer of their, element (III.iv.121). The implication is that he has
ascended beyond Sir Toby and Maria, but that is merely the delusion of his ego. In this scene he

The Overuse Of Antibiotics In Factory Farms
In 1929, Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin. He found it was so effective on killing many
common types of bacteria, that it became the most well known antibiotic. Penicillin became
popular in every hospital, and was widely used to treat infections. Fleming won a Nobel Prize in
medicine, and warned it is not difficult to make microbes resistant to penicillinin the laboratory by
exposing them to concentrations not sufficient to kill them (Philpott). He knew the dangers with
antibiotic resistant microbes, and knew they could be overused. Almost 50 years later, the problem
he envisioned became a reality. Factory farms are doing harm to humans and the environment for
their bad practices. The US Environmental Protection Agency should regulate... Show more content

One way is the runoff of contaminants into drinking water, and these contaminants include
pathogens, antibiotics, chemicals, and growth hormones. 53 percent of Americans use
groundwater as their main source of drinking water, and 29 states in the U.S have identified
CAFOs as the main cause for low quality groundwater. When pathogens are exposed to
groundwater, they have the ability to survive longer, and grow faster. This is due to lower
temperature, and lack of sunlight. Many factory farmers are developed near communities, so
humans are exposed to these contaminants. This can cause serious disease outbreaks within
families that live near waste runoff sites, and have the potential of the disease spreading across
the community (Hribar). The other way that factory farms can harm humans is the exposure to
dust particles. Livestock produce a particle called endotoxin. Endotoxin is the main cause for
respiratory diseases in American, so factory farms are the main source to blame. Endotoxin has
the ability to cause allergic reactions, asthma, and even some lung cancer has been caused by too
much exposure to this deadly particle. These particles can easily be brought to local communities
by wind because it mostly is settled down inside of barns or already floating in the air. The
manure also contains significant amounts of the particle, so when a farmer spreads manure on a
windy day, the wind can take it and spread it

called PMI (Private Mortgage Insurance). The cost of private mortgage insurance is included in a

What is happening is that there are some unethical lending practices that are threatening the
housing industry as a whole. The concern involves the practices of some sub prime lenders.
These practices are considered to be predatory on consumers. Sub prime lenders offer home

Extremely high interest rates, discount points, closing costs, and broker fees.

In India love is often forbidden due to the caste systems upon the people living within the
country. A caste system is class structure that is determined by birth; if a person in India is born
with poor parents than they are going to be poor as well, the same distinction goes for a person
who is born with rich parents. In Mahasweta Devi s short story Dhowli, the main character Dhowli
is referred to as an untouchable which is of the lowest caste. She becomes involved in a
relationship with a very wealthy Misra boy. Dhowli gets pregnant from the Misra boy and

is very similar to all the people living in the neighborhood they still pass judgment towards her
for the pregnancy. We don t care whether things go well or bad for her. Let her do what she can,
however she manages it (Devi 248). The criticism Dhowli is experiencing is coming from the
people who she used to consider her friends and people who are very un significant in her life.
Dhowli made a mistake just like all humans do, and she is being characterized by just that

Dhowli. I think this is similar in my own society. People in my society and like Dhowli are often
remembered for their mistakes and are constantly judged only on those mistakes like Dhowli has
been. Often, people are only looked at because of a flaw that has been pointed out by the public

The Importance Of Vocation In A Ray Of Darkness
Former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams book A Ray of Darkness, has been influential
on my own journey with call and vocation. Prior church experiences taught me that introspection
and self exploration were too prideful and that it is the Christian s duty to continually pursue
difficult things, in spite of aptitude. The rationale was: if it is difficult, then it must be holy. It was
this very mindset that for many years, kept me from pursuing my calling.
Williams book was formative in my life because he critiques the common view of vocation as a
theatrical casting event, which is also how I once viewed vocation. Williams argues that the God
finding us a part to play perspective of vocation is inherently problematic and leads to resentment
when we do not feel we are being used 1. Rather, in quite ground breaking fashion Williams defines
vocation as the call to be and exist as oneself 2. This frees us
to respond to God s call within our own unique identities. This was a revolutionary thought that
God wants me to be myself. Williams exposes the tendency to hide in unreality and self protection,
saying that vocation is what s left when all the games have stopped. 3
Now that I am moving towards the priesthood, I am actively engaged in discovering myself and
gifts that I possess. This is a unique challenge after years of living up to others expectations of
how a good Christian should live. In the past, I did not give myself permission as Williams says to

Most, if not all, pieces of railroad machinery have had various changes made from their original

very subjective thing. Public memory is subject to even more hazy recollections. Scholars, witness,
and government officials all have different versions about the details. Often times it is artists who
bring together these accounts by creating work which encourages public discussion. Two such

the bomb was deadly, but continued to support the development of more bombs in the same way

children and the people of the times are exhibiting purposeful forgetfulness. They both refuse to

What does a reputation mean?
As defined by the Cambridge dictionary, reputation is the opinion that people in general have about
someone or something or how much respect and admiration someone or something receives based

Based on this explanation, we realize that each individual is responsible for shaping his own
reputation, either purposely similar to what many politicians do or naturally by his actions, good

The struggle for freedom has existed since the beginning of civilization. When creating a nation,
leaders must decide who has power, and how much power they should have. But where is the
balance between an excess of freedom and insufficient freedom? Two societies shall be compared:
North Korea and Somalia. North Koreans have little liberty to do what they choose. The government
denies human rights and allows citizens to starve, whilst using wealth better spent on its citizens
to grow military might. Giving citizens little freedom of choice is obviously not a good way to
govern; however, the opposite also makes for an unstable country ( Life ). Somalia is a shaky
society with no central government and instead a series of clans and sub clans. ... Show more

In history, total freedom has proved unsuccessful it makes an unstable country that cannot well
defend itself. Likewise, an excess of freedom becomes unsafe for citizens, as there are no laws to
abide by and no government to discipline transgressors. Furthermore, the only absolute freedom
comes from God, who makes us free in the depths of our souls from the power of sin. Jesus replied,
Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the
family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed (John
8:34 36 NIV). If Christ has set you free, you will forever that is, all of eternity be free, and forever
you will have a place in God s kingdom as His son. In the words of Dr. De Haan, Like a raging fire,
freedom without limits is dangerous. But when controlled, it is a blessing to all (De Haan). Will
you embrace the limits of your freedom, and use the abundance of liberty in America to bless
others? Or will you cause pain to God by straying from Him? The choice is

Pawpaw Research Paper
Why In picking a career we need to ask certain questions. Sometimes these questions are hard to
answer. Why do I would become a teacher? Who was the most influential person for you? How
do you view yourself as a learner? What is your teaching style and why do you feel it is
effective? Why is teaching an important profession to me? Life is about something, but what it
is about for me it is the passing of knowledge that will make society move forward. Without the
teacher, we would be in the dark, because, the light of someone teaching would not be. We would
not advance as a society, on Medicare or agricultural advances. An influential person for me was
Frank A. Casey, my great grandpa, but to me he was Pawpaw. He was a small town preacher who

Essay On GPA
The admissions requirements for Texas State are very feasible to accomplish. Every year, 73%
of applicants get into the university. Although Texas State explains that no minimum scores are
required, you still must submit your SAT/ACT scores (Office of Undergraduate Admissions).
The average combined SAT score was 1135 and the average combined ACT score was 22
(Naviance). Along with the average test scores, your overall academic record is the most
important part of [the] application. The minimum GPA is a 3.2 for admissions requirements and
if lower, you ll have to make a better grade on your SAT. The Prep Scholar states that if you re
currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for collegeapplications. In... Show

The Undergraduate Admissions recommends that applicants have a minimum of a distinguished
diploma type... to demonstrate the highest level of college preparation and to be to most
competitive in the applicant pool. Texas Tech is a moderately selective schooland implies that the
students work hard to be successful. When looking at colleges, the first thing you notice is the
cost, and that s what I noticed about Texas State. If you re lucky, you could be the many that live
in Texas and get a lowered cost for admission. For Texas State, if you live in state, the cost for
admissions would be roughly $8,950. On the other hand, out of state tuition is a roughly large
amount of $19,086 which may be a make it or break point for this college.(Naviance). Another
factor may be the cost of housing. Room and board is a whopping $7,612. Although, it all
depends on whether you have a roommate or not. One last factor I have looked at is the cost of
their nursing school. I put this into play because my major will be pre nursing. Which per year,
Texas State s nursing school in Round Rock is $6,166 (St. David s School of Nursing: Texas State
University). Texas State may be a mildly costly school but it has great options that would fit my
needs but another college may fit me better. On the other hand, Texas Tech has a more reduced

The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow And Rip Van Winkle
Does the name Washington Irving ring a bell? The author of the immortalized tales, The Legend
of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle. A man who has passed away almost two centuries ago,
and still yet, a man who has paved the way for American literature. Washington Irving was born
in New York, New York on April 3, 1783, and turned to writing once the family s import export
business had failed. Realizing that there would be no more means to support himself financially,
Irving took up his talent and his passion as his profession. Throughout his life, Irving traveled
constantly; from London, England, to Madrid, Spain, as well as the Western prairie frontiers of his
homeland. His most renowned work, The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., is a Salmagundi
(the title of another of his books) of essays, short stories, and tales heavily influenced by German
folklore. In this collection, Irving frequently describes abstract ideas and ongoing situations with
the expert use of analogies and metaphors, while expressing the inner heart of his characters with
such vivid intensity that they seem to come alive. In addition, Irving proves himself a Jack of all
trades by providing subtle satire for the amusement of the reader. By exhibiting his prodigious
expertise in these numerous fields of literature, Irving establishes the fact that he is one of the
greatest writers in history. As a reader, the frequency in which Irving artfully describes a situation is
distinguishable from most

Well-Being Of America Essay
The well being of our country can be greatly helped or threatened by major events or changes.
Recently, events such as the 2016 presidential election and changes such as decreases in people
striving to lose weight and the obesity rate increasing have considerably affected the well being
of the United States. These events and changes have directly affected the people of our country
and will continue to affect our people until something has been done in addressing them. Less
than a month ago, our country experienced one of the most opposed and protested elections in
history. The day of the election and the day following it reported a very high 20% of Americans
were in a bad mood(characterized by stress and worry without happiness), almost double the
average amount (Davis). There are many contributing factors to why this number could have been
so high. It s not just one reason, but a combination of lots of explanations for why so many
Americans were considered to be in a bad mood. It is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the people don t want to lose the weight, then they won t lose it. In the 2000s, about 59% of
Americans reported that they wanted to lose weight, and now that has dropped to about 53%
(Swift). Even though only 28% of Americans are obese, a large 53% of us want to lose some
weight. I think a lot of that has to do with the amount of discrimination that television and media
in general puts on obesity and people that are overweight. There are numerous commercials
running everyday about weight loss programs, diets, and medication to take to help lose the
weight. Media can take a lot of the credit for the fact that over half of Americans are striving to
lose weight. This can come in any form from exercise to eating disorders where people are
starving themselves. Some ways people use to try to lose weight are harmful to the well being of our

Toddler Beds And Dimensions Of Choosing A Twin Bed
When looking for a new bed, it s important to understand the sizes and dimensions of your
options. When considering a bed, even for a child, it is important that you do not limit yourself to
simple single and twin beds. While beds of this size may be adequate now, a small bed may limit
your future options. A growing child, for instance, may go from a toddler bedto a queen that they
can continue to use comfortably as they grow. understanding bed sizes will also help you
determine how well a certain bed will fit in your available space.
Toddler Beds
The standard dimension for toddler beds in the United States is 27 inches wide by 52 inches
long. These dimensions are roughly the same as most cribs so that your baby s crib mattress can
easily be moved from the crib to the bed when it s time. This allows you to use your baby s crib
mattress and its accompanying sheet sets for a much longer period of time. It s also easy to find
waterproof mattress covers and protectors in this size to help you clean up nighttime accidents
during potty training. Toddler beds also include railings and are low to the ground to prevent falls.

The term twin bed simply refers to two identical single beds. This arrangement is common in hotel
rooms and vacation homes. The two terms are often used interchangeably in the United States, even
though they have slightly different meanings. The standard dimension for a single bed is 39 inches
wide and 75 inches long.

Analysis Of Clara Barton s Life
Introduction Clara Barton had many accomplishments throughout her life in all her endeavors. Her
story begins at a young age and continues into her career as a valuable individual saving lives as a
nurse. The accumulation of events and contributing factors that Barton experienced from her
childhood into her adult years shaped her into the nurse remembered in history and helped mold the
face of nursing for the future.
Background
Clara Barton is most notably remembered for her accomplishments, with the Red Cross and
nursing, however, her story begins years earlier when she was born December 25th, 1821 (Evans
2003). Barton was born to Stephen and Sarah Barton and grew up in New Oxford, Massachusetts.
Many of the experiences that Barton ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Barton not only became a teacher during a period where female teachers were rare, but she also
opened the first free public school in New Jersey. Though the school was not immediately
successful, it eventually took root and began to grow. It increased so much so that another school
had to be built. In 1854, Barton resigned from teaching and became one of the first women to be
employed by the federal government as a clerk at U.S Patent Office (Jones 2012).
In 1861 at the Baltimore riot, soldiers from the 6th Massachusetts infantry were attacked. Many
were wounded and killed. After hearing about the devastation, Barton left her work and went to
tend to those wounded (Jones 2012). Barton, who led by example, was able to build up a
volunteer network that lasted the entirety of the war. In March of 1865, Barton started the Office
of Correspondence with friends of the missing men in the United States Army. Barton, with the
help of volunteers, identified over 22,000 missing men. The searches for missing men led her to
assist in establishing a national cemetery, where they properly marked the graves of nearly 13,000
men (Gorlick 2002). Barton s great accomplishment with the war efforts gave her the opportunities
to speak throughout the Northwest and Midwest. After two years of traveling and speaking, Barton
retreated to Switzerland per doctors orders. While in Switzerland, Barton associated herself with the

Stanley Milgram s In The Perils Of Obedience
According to the Oxford dictionary Obedience is defined as a compliance with an order, request,
or law or submission to another s authority. In many situations authority demonstrates the ability
to control man to go against their beliefs in what is morally right. Due to fear and the insecurities
of man, authority may push the limits of society to a point where the individual may temporarily
give up their identity. This is proven by The Stanford Prison experiment The combination of
realism and symbolism in this experiment had fused to create a vivid illusion of imprisonment.
The illusion merged inextricably with reality for at least some of the time for every individual in
the situation. It was remarkable how readily we all slipped into our roles, temporarily gave up our
identities, and allowed these assigned roles and social forces in the situation to guide, shape, and

Each time the question asked was answered incorrectly the voltage of shock would be increased.
The student had been an actor hired to react to each shock, as the shock was to increase so did
their reactions to appeal to the teacher s empathy. When the teachers had reached a dangerous high
voltage and continued to do so it demonstrated a form of blind authority. Blind authority is obeying
the law only because it is a law, convinced your actions are okay because one is obeying orders of
an authority greater than man. It is apparent that this is blind authority due to the teachers
questioning if they should continue the experiment and demonstrating feeling guilt or discomfort in
their task given. Although the teachers may have felt their task given was wrong they continued to
do so because a figure of authority assured them it was okay, they were following the rules

  • 2. Causes Of Migration In The World Economy Of 1870-1914 Although I explained the occurrence of wage difference between Europe and the new world, having only one data of evidence is just not enough. As an economic student, further information is needed to support the argument in the above paragraph. Since we already know income in the new world would increase over the period of 1870 to 1914, I would like to investigate the cause of it, why was it increasing when mass migration started and the population in the new world (US here at an example) began to grow rapidly. Based on the numbers provided in Table 1 (Heitger, B. (1993, February). Migration in the World Economy of 1870 1914 [Electronic version]. , 129(3), 1 10.), US experienced positive immigrations from all the sending countries in Europe, which confirmed that the population of the emigration received was indeed growing and led to the overall population growth. If the US population was growing, what happened to the real wage? Let me form a simple economic model with only downward sloping demand and upward sloping supply for both US and one of a European nation. At, equilibrium their intersection determines the real wage. Since we are talking about migration, let us assume we only have human movement between two nations. Machine and capitals are excluded by this analysis. By looking at TableA2 (Heitger, B. (1993, February). Migration in the World Economy of 1870 1914 [Electronic version]. , 129(3), 1 10.), we know that almost all European countries have higher population ... One person might be deeply affected while the other has little or no ill effects to the same event. It presents a obstacle, threat or trauma but at the same time it gives opportunity for either growth or decline. The events that trigger a crisis can be from a wide range of life experiences, from development hurdles such as puberty to natural disasters to the death of a loved one. When people face a crisis, they can experience a range of physical and physiological symptoms as well as changes in their normal routines and relationships. Prevention, Detection And Diagnosis Of Periodontal Disease The most recent NHANES survey, conducted in 2012, estimated the prevalence of periodontitis in adults aged thirty to seventy to be 47.2%.[1] This survey did not include younger age groups, in which aggressive periodontitis is more often seen. Aggressive periodontitis has been reported to affect 0.2 10% of the population below twenty one years of age in African American and Hispanic subpopulations.[2] If left untreated, chronic and aggressive forms of periodontitiscan lead to tooth loss and may contribute to the etiology and/or progression of certain systemic inflammatory diseases.[3, 4] In current periodontal practice, detection and diagnosis of periodontal diseaseis mainly derived from a comprehensive clinical examination in combination with a review of patient medical and dental history. An accurate periodontal diagnosis is the first step in the development of a well designed and suitable treatment plan for management of a patient with a periodontal disease. Based on the current classification provided by the American Academy of Periodontology(AAP), published in 1999, severity of periodontitis is based on the amount of clinical attachment loss (CAL) as follows: slight 1 2 mm, moderate 3 4 mm, and severe ≥ 5 mm. Attachment loss is measured by adding the pocket probing depth and the amount of recession. [5] In clinical practice, however, measurement of CAL has proven to be difficult and time consuming. The Difference Between Civil Rights And Civil Rights I noted that the U.S. civil liberties, as well as, U.S. civil rights are generally located in the first ten amendments to the Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights, as well as, the Fourteenth Amendment. The distinction between civil liberties and civil rights is blurred since the concepts are used interchangeably, even though they refer to different kinds of guaranteed protections. Civil liberties are protections against government actions. Whereas civil rightsrefer to positive actions governments should take to create equal conditions. Imagine looking through the eyes of your favorite video game character but in reality, you are actual sitting on the couch. Look to the left and you see R2 D2 trying to communicate to you. To the right, you have rebel fighters shooting at storm troopers that are attacking your home planet. Virtual reality lets you do all of this from the comfort of your home. However, Augmented reality lets you do this as well, but it is less virtual and more technological. Imaging walking down the street and you see a Pikachu on the side of the road through technology based glasses. You are in the real world, but it is modified by the use of a computer. How has Virtual and Augmented reality? evolved the video games industry ? The history of video games goes all the way back to the 1930 s when the first coin operated entertainment was invented. The first pinball machines were invented during this time and are still around with us today in arcades and bars around the world. Video games around that time were actually called Electromechanical games. Electromechanical gaming graphics were only as good as artists could draw them. However, Electromechanical games were very limited. There was hard labor in assembling the games because of their use of motors, coins, and mechanical brackets. The gothic style era of literature was defiantly intriguing, and sometimes even creepy to read. I will say that, it absolutely held my attention while I was reading. As I first read Poe s works, I noticed that he very much so enjoyed writing in the darkest, and sometimes the most morbid form possible. Dark romantic novels such as, The Oval Portrait, and Ligeia shocked me. It is very easy to see the different elements between Nathaniel Hawthorne work, and Edgar Allen Poe s works. I believe that Hawthorne enjoyed writing mainly romances, sometimes containing a gothic elements. Poe seems as though he wrote romance gothic style novels, but with a twist. According to Edidin, Ganim, Hunter, Karnik (2012) on any particular night in the United States there are ~2 million homeless youth living on the streets, in shelters, or in other temporary accommodation. Youth become homeless for multiple reasons whether it be because they have aged out of foster care, ran from home, were kicked out of their home, or because they have become homeless along with their family members. Within the umbrella categorization of homeless youth there are high at risk subgroups, common misconceptions, and a serious concern of lack of support and medical services. Homeless youth face an abundance of challenges, especially if they are on their own, such as finding food, shelter, income, and potential medical expenses. Some youth experience additional hardship by facing the effects of abuse they endured at their previous place of residence. According to the National Conference of State Legislators (2013) 46 percent of runaway and homeless youth reported physical abuse, 38 percent reported emotional abuse, and 17 percent reported being forced into unwanted sexual activity by a family or household member. By Molly Campbell With the definition of a satire being, the use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people s stupidity , it is ludicrous to even propose that The Importance of Being Earnest is anything other than a satirical play, as the characters relishing in the upper class of the Victorian period unknowingly mock their own habits acquired to them due to the luxury they are spoilt with. Previous to Wilde s The Importance of Being Earnest, Victorian comedies consisted mostly of high and low comedy and of dirty or vulgar jokes, dirty gestures, and sex . Hence, it is possible to suggest that contradictory to Edouard Roditi s interpretation, the Importance of Being Earnest carries a moral point of view in the fact it does not exploit sex or sexual preferences to effectuate drollery; Wilde provokes laughter through mistaken identities and the consequences of bunburying perhaps to allude that his opinions it that sexuality is not a laughing matter. Providing this interpretation is true, it is acceptable to assume that the reasoning behind the negative criticisms the drama received when first written were due to the fact critics felt appalled that a piece of writing could prove successful without it consisting of any sexual nature and hence deemed The Importance of Being Earnest as, dull in comparison to other plays read over the years . Howbeit, some critics state that the word earnest became a code word for homosexual, as in: Is he earnest? , in the same way that Is he so? and Is he musical? were also employed , suggesting that The Importance of Being Earnest is an expression of Wilde s hatred for marriage and his fondness of homosexuality as he praises the idea of being Earnest . It can exist in a social level, between categories of people, for example gender, or race. It can even exist on an individual level, as to how each person is treated. Equality cannot be confined to simply equal opportunities for all; for an equal and fair process is still equality. An equal and fair result is also equality. In modern American, one can hardly see any signs of the touchy issue that tore the nation into two in the past. In both these cases, education over a long period of time is a clear factor; people gradually accept change. From known examples like Sri Lanka and Rwanda, where ethnic conflict is rampant, it is not realistic to expect change through imposing equality onto people through state policies. The Organizational Forms Of New Zealand Agricultural Sector New Zealand has a long farming history and agriculture has been one of the country s largest economic sectors, with 95 percent of the dairy products being exported contributing to about 30 percent of the world s trade (MAF, 2003). The land reforms which happened between late 19th and early 20th century emerged a large number of small and medium sized farms for the purpose of promoting the wealth of the settler society (Hamer, 1988). While popular culture tends to disempower women by telling them they must dress to get men to look at them, the modesty culture tends to disempower women by telling them they must dress to keep men from looking at them.It is important here to make a distinction between attraction and lust. Attraction is a natural biological response to beauty; lust obsesses on that attraction until it grows into a sense of ownership, a drive to conquer and claim. When Jesus warns that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart, he uses the same word found in the Ten Commandments to refer to a person who covets his neighbor s property. Lust takes attraction and turns it into the coveting of a woman s body as though it were property. And men are responsible for their own thoughts and actions when this happens; they don t get to blame it on what a woman is wearing. Many discussions of modesty, from diverse cultural or religious perspectives, revolve around the idea of keeping sinful and unholy female bodies and body parts from the gaze of others particularly men. Auden also uses bad syntax in the last line of the poem, had somewhere to get to and sailed calmly on. Auden may have chosen to write in this free form to demonstrate that people are so indifferent to what is going on around them that it does not make any difference what form the poem is written in, as it will only be overlooked and not given any attention. The form of the poem allows the reader to consider the ways in which suffering is masked by the frenzy of everyday life and that even the acknowledged suffering of others does not seem to be of any concern to anybody but the sufferer. Auden s poem is a criticism of human perceptions and how we use them to detect, or suppress human suffering. In the first half of the poem Auden compares versions of indifference by portraying youth and age, animals, and humans (Shmoop, 2014). Examples Of Glitches In World Of Warcraft World of Warcraft has some of my favorite examples of glitches that add to the gameplay experience, bugs that cause frustration, and some flaws that are just bizarre. One example of a bug making WoW more fun was wall walking , which allowed players access to areas of terrain that are supposed to be inaccessible. Techniques involving running up against hills and jumping, angling the camera in different ways, and even toggling from running to walking can grant players access to areas of the world that are barren or incomplete. • 25. The Impact Of The San Francisco Earthquake Of 1906 The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 and Recovery. What did the people of San Francisco suffer after the earthquake of 1906? In order to answer this question, we need to know what the San Francisco earthquake was. The San Francisco earthquake happened in 1906 with a magnitude of 7.8 and caused a fire that burned for 7 days. This was the biggest recorded earthquake in San Francisco. The foreshock started at 5:12am and 25 seconds later the earthquake started that lasted 40 to 60 seconds, with most San Franciscans asleep in rooms, they became trapped with only their hope to save them. The earthquake and fire of San Francisco in 1906 will go down as one of the worst earthquakes in the United States history. It s after affects can still be felt in the California area. The San Francisco earthquake caused quite a lot of damage in the area, but what is an earthquake? An earthquake is the movement of tectonic plates along a transform boundary and what plate is California sitting on? The Pacific Plate which is not connected to the North American plate and the plate boundary is a transform boundary. Earthquakes occur so often there that people say it is like a rainstorm that is ignored. The place where the Pacific Plate is grinding along with the North American Plate is called the San Andreas Fault. As stated before the earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8 which caused so much destruction a fire broke out. Nobody really knows where the fire started but it burned for 7 days and scorched over 500 city blocks leaving the once proud and powerful city into dust. The combination of the earthquake and fire is said to have killed Over 700 deaths by the earthquake and fire is now believed to be an understatement the total loss of life by a factor of 3 or 4. (The Great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.) Even before the earthquake people saw suspicious things with animals. For example, Lisa A. Chippendale in her book The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, quoted Sergeant Cook who stated The horses seemed skittish, frequently neighing and nervously pulling at their reins. • 26. The Punishment of Malvolio Essay In Shakespeare s play, Twelfth Night, the characters endure the fruits of their foolishness at the end of the play, but Malvolio endures a greater suffering and greater embarrassment than the rest of the characters. This is not simply by chance or whimsy: but this is Shakespeare s stratification of the vices that a person may take upon him or herself. With this stratification, Shakespeare allocates Malvolio s vices of pride, usurping the social order, and dour temperament as the worst of character flaws, and that is why Malvolio receives the harshest punishment. Before examining the punishment that Malvolio endures, it is necessary to examine his flaws and offenses. His arrival in the play is with criticism of Feste, and that initial... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Malvolio is treading the ground of criminal offense against a lord, who is also the cousin of his Lady. Beyond the offense upon the higher strata of society, Malvolio is also demonstrating his dour temperament in this scene which is also problematic. The importance of mirth and joviality is affirmed throughout the play, and for some characters, their greatest virtue is the ability to enjoy and be passionate for life. Malvolio stands in opposition to this with his protests and derision, and in the play he is the only character that takes offense to other characters enjoying their lives. The hostile environment he creates is important to note because it gives the other characters an impetus to deal with his troublesome personality in order to enjoy their own pleasures and pursuits. The last encounter where Malvolio extends his grievances is the second encounter with Sir Toby. Their encounter takes place after Malvolio s pride is incensed by the false note of Olivia, so his actions go even further in displaying his own ego and lack of regard for his superiors. Not only does he instruct Sir Toby and Maria to, go hang yourselves, (III.iv.120) but he also claims that he is no longer of their, element (III.iv.121). When pathogens are exposed to groundwater, they have the ability to survive longer, and grow faster. This is due to lower temperature, and lack of sunlight. Many factory farmers are developed near communities, so humans are exposed to these contaminants. This can cause serious disease outbreaks within families that live near waste runoff sites, and have the potential of the disease spreading across the community (Hribar). The other way that factory farms can harm humans is the exposure to dust particles. Livestock produce a particle called endotoxin. Endotoxin is the main cause for respiratory diseases in American, so factory farms are the main source to blame. Endotoxin has the ability to cause allergic reactions, asthma, and even some lung cancer has been caused by too much exposure to this deadly particle. • 32. The Importance Of Vocation In A Ray Of Darkness Former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams book A Ray of Darkness, has been influential on my own journey with call and vocation. Prior church experiences taught me that introspection and self exploration were too prideful and that it is the Christian s duty to continually pursue difficult things, in spite of aptitude. The rationale was: if it is difficult, then it must be holy. It was this very mindset that for many years, kept me from pursuing my calling. Williams book was formative in my life because he critiques the common view of vocation as a theatrical casting event, which is also how I once viewed vocation. Williams argues that the God finding us a part to play perspective of vocation is inherently problematic and leads to resentment when we do not feel we are being used 1. Rather, in quite ground breaking fashion Williams defines vocation as the call to be and exist as oneself 2. This frees us to respond to God s call within our own unique identities. This was a revolutionary thought that God wants me to be myself. Williams exposes the tendency to hide in unreality and self protection, saying that vocation is what s left when all the games have stopped. 3 Now that I am moving towards the priesthood, I am actively engaged in discovering myself and gifts that I possess. This is a unique challenge after years of living up to others expectations of how a good Christian should live. In the past, I did not give myself permission as Williams says to ... • 44. Pawpaw Research Paper Why In picking a career we need to ask certain questions. Sometimes these questions are hard to answer. Why do I would become a teacher? Who was the most influential person for you? How do you view yourself as a learner? What is your teaching style and why do you feel it is effective? Why is teaching an important profession to me? Life is about something, but what it is about for me it is the passing of knowledge that will make society move forward. Without the teacher, we would be in the dark, because, the light of someone teaching would not be. We would not advance as a society, on Medicare or agricultural advances. An influential person for me was Frank A. Casey, my great grandpa, but to me he was Pawpaw. He was a small town preacher who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Undergraduate Admissions recommends that applicants have a minimum of a distinguished diploma type... to demonstrate the highest level of college preparation and to be to most competitive in the applicant pool. Texas Tech is a moderately selective schooland implies that the students work hard to be successful. When looking at colleges, the first thing you notice is the cost, and that s what I noticed about Texas State. If you re lucky, you could be the many that live in Texas and get a lowered cost for admission. For Texas State, if you live in state, the cost for admissions would be roughly $8,950. On the other hand, out of state tuition is a roughly large amount of $19,086 which may be a make it or break point for this college.(Naviance). Another factor may be the cost of housing. Room and board is a whopping $7,612. Although, it all depends on whether you have a roommate or not. One last factor I have looked at is the cost of their nursing school. I put this into play because my major will be pre nursing. Which per year, Texas State s nursing school in Round Rock is $6,166 (St. David s School of Nursing: Texas State University). Texas State may be a mildly costly school but it has great options that would fit my needs but another college may fit me better. On the other hand, Texas Tech has a more reduced ... • 46. The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow And Rip Van Winkle Does the name Washington Irving ring a bell? The author of the immortalized tales, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle. A man who has passed away almost two centuries ago, and still yet, a man who has paved the way for American literature. Washington Irving was born in New York, New York on April 3, 1783, and turned to writing once the family s import export business had failed. Realizing that there would be no more means to support himself financially, Irving took up his talent and his passion as his profession. Throughout his life, Irving traveled constantly; from London, England, to Madrid, Spain, as well as the Western prairie frontiers of his homeland. His most renowned work, The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., is a Salmagundi (the title of another of his books) of essays, short stories, and tales heavily influenced by German folklore. In this collection, Irving frequently describes abstract ideas and ongoing situations with the expert use of analogies and metaphors, while expressing the inner heart of his characters with such vivid intensity that they seem to come alive. In addition, Irving proves himself a Jack of all trades by providing subtle satire for the amusement of the reader. By exhibiting his prodigious expertise in these numerous fields of literature, Irving establishes the fact that he is one of the greatest writers in history. As a reader, the frequency in which Irving artfully describes a situation is distinguishable from most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Well-Being Of America Essay The well being of our country can be greatly helped or threatened by major events or changes. Recently, events such as the 2016 presidential election and changes such as decreases in people striving to lose weight and the obesity rate increasing have considerably affected the well being of the United States. These events and changes have directly affected the people of our country and will continue to affect our people until something has been done in addressing them. Less than a month ago, our country experienced one of the most opposed and protested elections in history. The day of the election and the day following it reported a very high 20% of Americans were in a bad mood(characterized by stress and worry without happiness), almost double the average amount (Davis). There are many contributing factors to why this number could have been so high. It s not just one reason, but a combination of lots of explanations for why so many Americans were considered to be in a bad mood. It is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the people don t want to lose the weight, then they won t lose it. In the 2000s, about 59% of Americans reported that they wanted to lose weight, and now that has dropped to about 53% (Swift). Even though only 28% of Americans are obese, a large 53% of us want to lose some weight. I think a lot of that has to do with the amount of discrimination that television and media in general puts on obesity and people that are overweight. There are numerous commercials running everyday about weight loss programs, diets, and medication to take to help lose the weight. Media can take a lot of the credit for the fact that over half of Americans are striving to lose weight. This can come in any form from exercise to eating disorders where people are starving themselves. Some ways people use to try to lose weight are harmful to the well being of our ... Barton not only became a teacher during a period where female teachers were rare, but she also opened the first free public school in New Jersey. Though the school was not immediately successful, it eventually took root and began to grow. It increased so much so that another school had to be built. In 1854, Barton resigned from teaching and became one of the first women to be employed by the federal government as a clerk at U.S Patent Office (Jones 2012). In 1861 at the Baltimore riot, soldiers from the 6th Massachusetts infantry were attacked. Many were wounded and killed. • 51. Stanley Milgram s In The Perils Of Obedience According to the Oxford dictionary Obedience is defined as a compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another s authority. In many situations authority demonstrates the ability to control man to go against their beliefs in what is morally right. Due to fear and the insecurities of man, authority may push the limits of society to a point where the individual may temporarily give up their identity. This is proven by The Stanford Prison experiment The combination of realism and symbolism in this experiment had fused to create a vivid illusion of imprisonment. The illusion merged inextricably with reality for at least some of the time for every individual in the situation. It was remarkable how readily we all slipped into our roles, temporarily gave up our identities, and allowed these assigned roles and social forces in the situation to guide, shape, and eventually... The student had been an actor hired to react to each shock, as the shock was to increase so did their reactions to appeal to the teacher s empathy. When the teachers had reached a dangerous high voltage and continued to do so it demonstrated a form of blind authority. Blind authority is obeying the law only because it is a law, convinced your actions are okay because one is obeying orders of an authority greater than man. It is apparent that this is blind authority due to the teachers questioning if they should continue the experiment and demonstrating feeling guilt or discomfort in their task given. Although the teachers may have felt their task given was wrong they continued to do so because a figure of authority assured them it was okay, they were following the rules ...
