Examples Of A Paradigm According To Khn
What is a paradigm, according to Kuhn? (8 pts)
According to Kuhn, a paradigm is universally recognized scientific achievements (a theory of
science), which become a framework for scientific research and knowledge. It is a set of practices
that defines science for a particular period of time. This paradigm provides a scientific community a
model, within which it evolves. The paradigm defines what is to be observed and analyzed, what
kind of questions should be asked, how they should be structured, how the results of the experiment
should be interpreted, how the research should be conducted as well as equipment it should be
conducted with etc.
What is the difference, according to Kuhn, between normal and revolutionary science? (5 pts)
Kuhn argued that science undergoes periodic revolutions (so called ... Show more content on

(8 pts)
New scientific discoveries follow as the new paradigm is adopted.
The groundwork of a new paradigm must already be in a place in order for new scientific
discoveries to be made. For example, Galileo was already thinking in terms of a new paradigm of
natural motions before he discovered the pendulum. His new concepts and theories enabled him to
see the phenomenon of the pendulum. Before this the pendulum wasn t seen or addressed within
the old paradigm
Why does Kuhn say that, before and after a scientific revolution, scientists live in different worlds ?
If Kuhn is correct in claiming this, why would a scientific community choose a new paradigm? (7)
Kuhn says that scientists live in different worlds when speaking of scientists living in different
paradigms because people essentially start thinking in a complete different way, when converting to
a new scientific paradigm. They stop thinking the old way and theories, which belonged to old
paradigms, become impossible to explain. Paradigms cannot be explained through one another,
since there is no

The Great City Of New York
Glamour and Riches
Since the introduction of films and theatres the great city of New York has often been depicted
as an idyllic place to live, where people go to make their dreams come true. One movie in
particular enthral us in its representation of New York City, Breakfast at Tiffany s based on
Truman Capote s novella brings the glamourous atmosphere of the high society to our door step.
Produced in 1961, it also opens a window to the mores of the time. This movie made New York City
the place to be to get rich and live free. It acts as an icon for the American Dream, a City of hope.
As the film opens on a scene of Holyday Golightly, actress Audrey Hepburn, still wearing an
evening gown getting out of a taxi and gazing at the displays of the Tiffany s store on Fifth
Avenue, the spectator can already feel the richness of New York. Breakfast at Tiffany s
describes New York as a grand place full of light and richness; nowhere in the movie do we see a
person struggling to survive. Moreover, even though Holy is utterly unable to manage her
money, the City itself seems to provide for her whenever she is in need. A new opportunity to
enrich her always seems to appear out of nowhere. Consequently, New York appears as a
benefactor bestowing its greatness to the citizens, opportunities and chances to make it big await
at every corner. Holy s dream is to someday have breakfast at Tiffany s, which symbolise her quest
for riches as well as her foolish character since it is an

The Pros And Cons Of Zoos
During February 2014, Tania, a female Indian Elephant has been shunted around from zoo to zoo,
ending up in the Targu Mures Zoo in Romania. During her time as a captive elephant Tania has
rarely been given time to bond with other members of her species. Tania has been living for 39
years. At the Targu Mures Zooshe is confined into a tiny enclosure, not given the company of any
other elephants, and forced to stand in her own urine and feces. This is due to sporadic, and
very unsanitary cleaning of the practices of the zoo. Tania the elephants story began in 1978
when her herd was wiped out in the wild. After that she had spent every one of her days looking
through the bars of zoos across the continent. This story and many others is the sad truth of what
zoos do to the animals that live behind their bars. This is why Zoos should be exterminated. In
the United Kingdom there was a welfare concern for all of the elephants. 75% of elephants were
overweight, only 16% could walk normally, and solitary 20% of the elephants were free of foot
problems. This is why zoos do more harm than good. CAPS (captiveanimals.org ) states Wild
animals in zoos suffer physically and mentally as their complex social, behavioural and physical
needs cannot be met in the unnatural manmade environments. Many animals suffer from being
captive in the children s fun center we now call zoos. This captivity can turn into a disease.

Poison Pill
POISON PILL STRATEGIES
Poison pill strategies are defensive tactics that allow companies to thwart hostile takeover bids
from other companies. Many companies may find themselves unprepared when facing such bids.
By adopting a poison pill strategy, a company can be somewhat reassured that acquiring companies
will approach its board of directors, not the shareholders. Poison pill strategies are also known as
shareholders protection rights plans.
HISTORY
During the late 1950s and early 1960s, several large corporations began acquiring other companies
to diversify their operations. Diversification allowed them to offset their losses in a failing industry
with profits from other unrelated, successful industries. Such phenomena caused ... Show more

PUT RIGHTS PLAN.
Under this plan, the target company issues rights to its stockholders in the form of a dividend.
When an acquirer purchases a specified percentage ownership in the target company, the target
shareholders, excluding the acquirer, are entitled to sell their common stock back to the company
for a specified sum of cash, debt securities, preferred stock, or some combination thereof. This
form of poison pill strategy is rarely used by the U.S. corporations.
VOTING POISON PILL PLAN.
This poison pill strategy is designed to dilute the controlling power of the acquirer. Under this plan,
the target company issues a dividend of securities, conferring special voting privileges to its
stockholders. For example, the target company might issue shares that do not have special voting
privileges at the outset. When a potential hostile bid occurs, the stockholders, other than the
acquiring party, receive super voting privileges. Alternately, the target company s stockholders
might receive securities with voting rights that increase in value over period.
EXAMPLES OF RIGHTS PLANS.
On 5 November 1998, Motorola, Inc. adopted a new rights plan to replace an existing plan. Under
the plan, one right attaches to each existing share of common

Identity And Identity In The Whore s Child By Richard Russo
The Whore s Child is a famous short story by Richard Russo. The story follows the life of a nun,
Sister Ursula, as she joins a college fiction writing course and begins writing her life story. As she
writes, with the help of her professor and the feedback from her class, she discovers more about
herself and the truth about her life. A key element of this story is the depth to which the characters
are explored, given the limited amount of time for characterization. A primary way to explore this
characterization is through the works of prominent identity theorists one of which being Canary et
al. This theory talks about some of the ways that identity is developed, through concepts such as
social cognition, schema, and the four cognitive... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another key aspect of Canary s theory is that of the four cognitive processes stereotypes,
attributions, person perception, and interpersonal goals. According to Canary, stereotypes are
when categories are about people and are based on their group membership (Canary 114). In
Russo s story, Sister Ursula writes about how, as a child, she understood that her mother s being
a prostitute made her the whore s child, that her mother s wickedness diminished her father s
value (8). This excerpt from Sister Ursula s story establishes how the negative stereotypes around
her mother s lifestyle impacted her childhood. Even today, prostitution is considered dishonorable
in society, especially within religious circles, and thus, Sister Ursula s mother s stigma was
attached to her as a child, which caused her to be inherently disliked in the nun community. Again,
this could be a contributing factor to Sister Ursula s cold and steadfast demeanor, as she had to
grow up protecting herself from the judgmental gazes of her superiors and peers. Attributions are
the next facet of the four cognitive processes that can be seen in The Whore s Child. They are
defined as assessments of the cause of an action or behavior, (Canary 111) and can be both internal
and external. Internal meaning that the behavior is attributed to qualities such as

Prufrock And Hamlet
The characters within each literary work and film exhibit diverse responses to their summoning. For
instance, Prufrock refuses the call to undertake a future with his compelling woman. His cowardly
personality causes him to avoid telling the lady his true infatuation for her. Also, Eliot compares
Prufrock to Hamlet, [a]t times... almost ridiculous.... At times, the Fool (Eliot 118 119). The
inability to make a choice characterizes Hamlet, similar to how Prufrock cannot decide if his
words are worth the risk of losing his lover because of his bad reputation. Furthermore, Plath
explains how the woman accepts her call by allowing herself to enter her subconscious. The author
writes Now I am a lake (Plath 10). Water represents an archetype for

Dick Rhodes Book Summary
Dick Rhodes was born in Ulster to a homemaker and a WWII veteran. Before war broke out in
his homeland, he immigrated to Canada. To be an ordinary guy was his plan, to marry, have
children and live a long productive life. Instead, returning home, he became a soldier. By his
side, his buddies fought the war. Years later, after the guns fell silent many were still fighting the
war. A sinister, unseen, evil war called P.T.S.D. During the conflict, in his homeland, from the
Ulster Defense Regiment alone, 197, male and female soldiers have their names inscribed on war
memorials as killed in action. A further 61 Ex soldiers, the terrorists murdered after their service

or connected to those with combat related P.T.S.D. To expose the agony of those who relive their
war every day. To show the effects that untreated P.T.S.D. can have on a family. In the end, the

Similarities Between Kojiki And Greek Mythology
Similar myths and legends have been coexisting throughout the world, regardless of eastern and
western cultures, and in different languages. Greek myth is probably the world s most famous
and beloved than any other tale of legends stories. Surprisingly, Greek myth and Japanese myth
share many similarities in the creation of the world and legend stories through their mythologies.
Japan s Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters) is a collection of Japanese historical records as well
as Japanese mythologies, in which the legend explains the creation of the world and birth of
deities. However, Greek mythologies, on the other hand, do not have an official written record of
mythologies or religious text like the Bible or the Kojiki, but earliest story teller like Homer and
Hesiod shared richest sources in poems, attempt to explain the beginning of the universe in human
language.
Both Kojiki and Greek mythologies describe common belief in the creation of the world, in
which gods give birth to another to form the world. In Kojiki, two of the seven gods who came
into existence, Izanagi and Izanami give birth to many nature deities, creating the world. But
because Izanami gives birth to too many deities, she dies while giving birth to the fire deity. In
result of her death, enraged Izanagi kills the fire deity. In contrast, Greek myth describes the
creation of the world with the four gods who came to existences, Gaea (earth) Chaos, Tartarus
(Hell), and then Eros. Gaea asexually gives birth to Uranus (Sky) and marries her son. She then
bears three types of gods; the Titans, the Cyclopes, and the Hecathonchires. However, Uranus
repels at the monstrous creatures and sends Cyclopes and Hecatonchires down to Tartarus (Hell).
Frustrated by Uranus s action, Gaea forges the first sickle, gives it to her youngest son Cronos,
and have him punish his father, Uranus. Once Uranus returns to make love to Gaea, Cronos
emasculates him. Here we see the similarities in the creation of the world by birth and death of God
by the hands of another god with fury.
Another similarity can be spotted on the death of the loved ones, in which the god or a hero is
visiting the world of the dead to meet their wives. In Kojiki, after the death of

What Makes Architecture Real
Project Report:
Jon 9. Grade
Architecture
Architecture is a word of common knowledge, as I think it should and is at least for the people
around me that i know. For me the word is always associated with architect, because an architect is
the one who makes architecture real. Architecture as people understand it nowadays probably came
to life with the species homo sapiens because they are self conscious, before it was just a very
primitive thing. You could say DNA is an architect because it builds, in fact it is probably the best
and wisest architect humans know of, therefore we are also architecture because anything that is
built and is physical can be architecture by definition even Wikipedia states that. This is is all very
philosophical.
All form of art are connected with philosophy and so is architecture. Architecture is considered art,
plus everything that involves with it like the process of designing.
Architecture was the first art form on this planet, everything existing is in reality architecture,
noone never said architecture had to be created by a conscious being. If universe just came into
existence, therefore nothingness itself is an architect.
Therefore nothingness could be conscious, just vacuum or something more. ... Show more content

Nowadays building are not that practical anymore, there have been buildings just for the show
like the Eiffel tower. In fact there have been buildings just for show since the beginning of first
civilizations. Temples for gods, pyramids for pharaos, arcs for victorious battles. Still architecture
has to stay practical and efficient, if not, we could not support 7 billion people on this earth. For
example building a house which fits 5 families inside comfortably when it could as well fit in 15
families same comfortably with the same amount of effort put in. In other words not doing anything

Self Driving Cars
Imagine laying in bed watching your favorite movie, playing your favorite video game, or
listening to your favorite song. Now, imagine that on your way to work or to the store. Self
driving cars could make this a possibility. We have been tinkering with ideas for autonomous
vehicles for almost a century and a few companies have even been successful in designing a fully
functioning self driving car. Roads full of these video game esque cars controlled by artificial
intelligence or other means of autonomy may not be as distant in the future as one might think.
This, being a drastic change in the way we travel, could cause many issues. Due to these
potential issues, it is in our best interest to raise questions before we implement these
technologies. One possible question is: have we thought out any ramifications this might cause,
and if so, do we have an approach to fix them? Engineers have been tinkering with ideas for
driverless vehicles since the 1920s. In 1925 the first driverless car, named the Linrrican Wonder,
was taken through traffic jams up broadway and across fifth avenue in New York. The Linrrican
Wonder was controlled by a car following behind sending radio signals to small electric motors.
Later, in 1953, RCA Laboratories designed a mini car that ran along wires on the floor. Five years
later, they built a full sized model and demonstrated it by putting detector circuits under the road
that sent signals to the car and controlled the steering and brakes. RCA

Black Worm
The Lumbriculus Variegatus, or Black Worm, is a species of worm, which belong to the Annelida
family, meaning their bodies are formed of segments instead of jointed legs (Brinkhurst, Gelder,
1991). The Black worm mainly inhabits the European and North American regions, notably in the
shallow habitats, such as the edges of ponds, marshes, or lakes. Black worms diets consist of
vegetation, and underwater microorganisms like algae (Brinkhurst, Gelder, 1991). Black worms
are normally located in the sandy sediments from deeper parts in the water that they inhabit. Black
worms use their head to search for food, while their tales often project upward. The worm does this

In a typical segment, the ventral nerve cord has four pairs of segmental nerves that extend
laterally and dorsally around the body wall (Stephenson, 1930). Some of the segment s nerve
fibers are sensitive and quickly detect any stimulation to the worms body (Lesiuk, N. M. and C.
D. Drewes, 1999). Other fibers are motor fibers that supply wall muscle cells. The nerve cord
controls the worm s muscles that, in return, cause it to move. Worms use their muscles to crawl
through the mud by getting extra traction from bristles that can be seen from the side of their
body. Worms will rapidly pull back their head or tail if it is touched. Worms that hold their tail up
to the water surface may quickly withdraw it if a shadow suddenly occurs. This is because these
worms have tiny simple eyes (called photoreceptor cells) scattered along their tail segments. In
water, worms can also swim for short distances by making corkscrew movements with their body
(zool.iastate.edu, n.d., n.a.).
The Lumbriculus Variegatus, in recent years had been looked over for classroom and laboratory
use. However, these worms present great promise for researcher and student friendly laboratory
experiments. Black worms have been found to be very helpful and informative in experiments
involved with subjects such as: Physiology, Development,

Describe And Evaluate The Causes And Effects Of Hurricanes
A tropical wave emerged into the Atlantic from the west coast of Africa on October 9. After
reaching the southwestern Caribbean, convection intensified near the center and organized into
a broad low on October 21, possibly due to a cold front that moved into the region. After a
marked increase in convection near and west of the center, a tropical depression developed early
on October 23 about 60 mi (97 km) north of Isla de Providencia. The depression moved northward
into a weakness in a ridge near Florida, caused by a broad mid level trough over the Southeastern
United States. Initially, the depression intensified gradually, becoming Tropical StormRina early on
October 24. After a decrease in easterly windshear, however, Rina rapidly deepened while crossing
warm waters, reaching hurricane status at 18:00 UTC on October 24 and becoming a major

Carmen with winds of 60 mph (95 km/h). The storm left little impact in the YucatГЎn Peninsula
due to its weakened state. Rina degenerated into a remnant low late on October 28, upon emerging

Sonny s Blues
Sonny s Blues
A captivating tale of a relationship between two troubling brothers in Harlem, Sonny s Blues is
told from the perception of Sonny s brother, whose name is never mentioned. Baldwin s choice of
Sonny s brother as a narrator is what makes Sonny s Blues significant in terms of illustrating the
relationship and emotional complications of Sonny and his brother. The significance of Sonny s
Blues lies in the way Sonny s brother describes their relationship based on what he observes, hears,
and feels, and how he struggles trying to understand Sonny through the course of the story. This is a
story of how two African Americans brothers take their own path through life as they struggle to

When life seems to take a toll on Sonny he immerses himself in his music. He realizes that his

Vivaldi Instrumedeley Analysis
The two concerts I have chosen are different in many ways, but the music itself has a lot in
common. For the first concert I chose the progressive rock group Dream Theater. I chose the piece
Instrumedley from their Live at Budokan video released in 2004. This video depicts the band setup
on stage in the typical rock concertformat. The lighting is bright and multicolored. Unlike most rock
concerts, the musicians do not animate themselves to excite the crowd. They rely on the mastery of
their instruments to provide the excitement.
The second concert is a performance of Vivaldi s Concerto Grosso in D minor. It is performed by
the Franz Listz Chamber Orchestra. The setting is that of a small gothic church in Hungary. There
is no audience as the venue is used solely for the acoustics.
The band Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band formed in 1985. The members
met while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Their music focuses on
three core elements: metal, progressive roots and melody. Dream Theater has been known to make
use of elements of other musical styles to include classical music. The piece I selected,

The opening sequence is entrancing as the two violins tend to echo off one another. The acoustics
of the gothic church lend itself perfectly to the style of music. The details in the melody are

Constantine s Edict Of Milan
Throughout history there have been moments that define the rest of time. Turning points or critical
moments in which one decision or creation forever changed the path of history. Such moments as
Constantine s Edict of Milan, Gutenberg s development of the printing press, and Martin Luther s
Ninety five Theses forever changed the landscape of Western Civilization. Who knows where
Western Civilization would be without these great hinges of history.
In 313 CE, Constantine passed the Edict of Milan. This edict declared the freedom of everyone in
the Roman Empire to choose their own religion. He neither made polytheism illegal nor did he
make Christianity the official religion of Rome. Instead, to placate both pagans and Christians,
both were acceptable to be practiced. This edict also stated that the emperor was protected by the
highest divinity, whether that was God, Jupiter or any other god in the Roman pantheon.
Constantine continued his work to bring pagans and Christians into peaceful coexistence. He
gave the Christians their property confiscated during Diocletian s Great Persecution, but he had
the Roman treasury reimburse the people who had bought the stolen goods. He also declared the
Lord s Day to be called Sunday in honor of the day the Christian s God rested and in honor of the
sun, an aspect of pagan worship. He even kept the traditional title of Pontifex Maximus or chief
priest. After decades of persecution the Christians finally had an emperor on their

Weak Verbs
Throughout English s etymological progression many words have been created, utilized to their
fullest capability, and then forgotten. Some words, like affuage , which means the right to cut
wood in a forest for a family fire , simply have lost relevance in modern society. Other words have
been replaced with a more efficient word, such as fallaciloquence being replaced with flattery.
Additional archaic words still exist, however, usually only in idioms, as in the case of sleight of
hand . Often miswritten as slight of hand , sleight is a word of Middle English origin meaning
sneaky or crafty . Very few people today realize the common misnomer of the idiom, making
sleight even rarer today. Verbs are not excluded from annihilation either, as hundreds of verbs
have either been eliminated from Modern English or have transitioned into different forms and
meanings. Some verbs, which originated as strong verbs , irregular verbs which have past tense
forms without the requirement of an ending, have become weak verbs , or verbs that require
endings like ed , en , or t . In earlier versions of English, the language contained a higher
prevalence of strong verbs compared to weak verbs. However, throughout the centuries there has
been a clear decline of strong verbs. Many strong verbs became weak verbs or disappeared
completely, as when the language developed and the number of English speakers grew, many
strong verbs became rigid in their uses, and the unpracticed,

Mary Maloney In Roald Dahl s Lamb To The Slaughter
Everyone does something at some point in their life that can be considered insane. Sometimes it s
simple things like trying a new food or a new hobby. However, other times it can be more extreme
such as stepping outside of the status quo or jumping out of an airplane. The story, Lamb to the
Slaughter by Roald Dahltakes the term insane a bit farther. The story depicts the life of Mary
Maloney and describes the event in which she hit and killed her husband with a leg of lamb after
receiving unfortunate news from husband when he returned home from work. However, Mary
Maloney is innocent due to reason of Insanity due to her inability of being aware of her actions
throughout the story. She does this by portraying the symptoms of a person with schizophrenia,
attempting to maintain to the forced conformity of gender roles, and her over attachment or
jealousy for her husband.
In many of Roald Dahl s storys, his characters have a tend to have an underlying trait to them that
is not always prevalent throughout the story . For instance, in this story, Mary Maloney struggles
with the trait of schizophrenia. A person with schizophrenia tends to exhibit some noticeable
symptoms. According to The Internet Mental Health Initiative, some of the symptoms can be
sometimes feeling nothing at all, feeling detached from your own body, and replaying or
rehearsing conversations out loud. Throughout the story, Mary Maloney has a tendency to display
all of these symptoms as she goes through the pre and post events that occurred after she received
the unfortunate news. Lamb to the Slaughter elaborates on the symptom of body detachment by
quoting , The violence of the crash, the noise, the small table overturning, helped bring her out of
the shock (Dahl 382) . At this point in the story, Mary Maloney has just hit her husband with a leg
of lamb which then caused him to fall over dead. This quote shows that during the point in time
when she hit him, she was having an bodily detachment due to the fact she was in shock from the
news she had recently received. By the time she had became fully aware of what she was doing
and was awoken from her bodily detachment, he had already hit the ground. Mary Maloney also

Meaning Of Race In The Film Understanding Race
The Meaning Of Race
The film Understanding Race gives many accounts of the meaning of the word race and what race
actually is and what it isn t. According to the film, most scientists agree that race doesn t exists in
the natural world. This conclusion was drawn in 1998, the concept of race was proven to have no

Dolores Newton points out during the film that one of the things that has made humans successful
on Earth is that we have always been good at classifying things and looking at similarities and

Similarities Of Pirates And Yoga
Pilates and yoga are both very important exercises that can help benefit people physically and
mentally. Both practices allow people to build up muscle endurance and it can also rehabilitate
people. Both practices also have positive effects on one s mental health, improving overall life
satisfaction. Exploring the history, health benefits, and injuries of Pilates and yogahas helped me
make my decision on whether I keep it as a part of my fitness regimen.
Yoga has a complex history, because it is based on a belief system, that each yogi will interpret
differently. The origins of yoga date back to as early as 2500 BCE, where a simple figurine was
found. The artifact was Shiva, the destroyer of the world, in a yoga pose. Yoga means union in

two main focuses were bhoga (enjoyment) and mukti (liberation) (Connolly). During the modern
period, Hatha yoga flourished. Hatha means the union of eternal sun and moon, and it focuses on
six purifications. These practices are dhauti, basti, neti, traktaka, nauli, and kapalabhati. These
practices were meant to cleanse the body and make one immune to illness and old age(Singleton).

Enterprise resource planning (ERP), when implemented successfully ,can be linked to all
departments of the organization to access, share and collect information. It has many functions
such as, order administration, manufacturing, human resources, financial systems, and customers
into a tightly integrating system with sharing data and visibility and distribution with external

Chin-Kee In The Monkey King
Which leads us to the character of Chin Kee. At first he seems like a way for the author to call
out the racist sitcom culture. With Chin Kee s extremely yellow complexion, his heavy Chinese
accent and his high intelligence, he fits all the racist stereotypes people have of Asians.
However, we later learn that Chin Kee was a disguise for the Monkey King and when we realize
that Danny was formerly known as Jin Wang, Chin Kee s character gains another layer. Chin Kee s
character does not just call out the racist sitcom culture, he is also there as a manifestation of Jin
Wang s internalized racism. First of all, by writing this story as an American sitcom with a laugh

Chin Kee represents everything Danny hates about himself and his Chinese identity. He s
therefore a manifestation of his internalized racism. Every time Chin Kee visits, he is reminded
of the Chinese identity that he rejected. Danny tries to run away, change schools, but that won t
change the fact that he is Chinese. His struggles with his identity will always follow him around,
until he deals with them. When the Monkey King shows his true form, he asks Danny to do the
same thing, to reveal himself as Jin Wang. The Monkey King tells Danny that he s not here to
punish him, but to serve as your conscience as a signpost to your soul (221). The Monkey King
is here to try and help Jin find his true identity, instead of running away from it. When Jin Wang
asks him what he is supposed to do next, the Monkey King answers him: You know, Jin, I would
have saved myself from five hundred years imprisonment beneath a mountain of rock had I only
realized how good it is to be a monkey (223). The book does not give a clear answer what exactly
his identity will be now. However, he has started to try and make things right with Wei Chen Sun,
so he has made a first step into overcoming his internalized racism and accepting his Chinese

Go Ask Alice Society
Society can be cruel; and Alice could tell you all about it personally. In Go Ask Alice by Beatrice
Sparks, a 15 year old girl finds herself struggling within the battle against society and their brutal
ideals. All Alice wanted was a happy life but this can be hard to achieve within the unforgiving
surroundings in the novel which can also be seen in society today. Many connections can be made
to the book and real life through Alice s experiences and the actions of those around her.
Throughout the book Go Ask Alice, reflections on society can be seen through Alice s

get help from others instead of hiding her feelings and problems from the world. This connects
to society as people as a whole generally learn from the things they go through in life to become a
better person. Diaries are great when you re young. In fact, you saved my sanity a hundred,

the book connecting to society as Alice has found a way to feel better about life. This also

In fact the first passage is neutral and suggests only that she is familiar with the New Woman s
insistence on greater freedom and physical activity, attributes which Gail Cunningham mentions in
her discussion:
It was pointed out that women were likely to remain the weaker sex as long as they were encased
in whalebone and confined their physical activity to the decorous movements of the ballroom, and
the new doctrine of hygiene as it was coyly termed advocated sports for women and Rational
Dress. Many young women pedalled their way to undreamt of freedoms on the newly popular
bicycle; petticoats and chaperons were equally inappropriate accompaniments, and could be
discarded in one go.8
Bicycle riding, bloomers, and badminton may have shocked more conservative people in the 1890s,
but they were probably not enough to worry Stoker or his heroine. Nor was the fact that the New
Woman was often a professional woman who chose financial independence and personal fulfilment
as alternatives to marriage and motherhood. Cunningham adds that while these activities were
important aspects of emancipation, they are not, however, responsible for the New Woman s
becoming a symbol of all that was most challenging and dangerous in advanced thinking. The
crucial factor was, inevitably, sex (Cunningham, p. 2).

Introduction
The best selling novel, The Time Machine, is written by H.G. Wells. H.G. Wells is also known as
The Father of Science Fiction. Wells has written many books that has influenced our vision of the
future, The Time Machine, being his first and foremost novel. The Time Machine is the story of the
Time Traveler who invents the machine, his adventures while traveling, and his recounting of the
tale to the narrator and friends gathered in his home.
Key Idea 1 The beginning of the book is very intriguing, pulling readers into the book and making
them want to read more. The book begins in the Time Traveler s home, where he and his guests are
having dinner and discussing his theories about time and time travel. When the Time Traveler tells
the guests he can actually do it, they are skeptical. The Time Traveler s colleagues bombard him
with protestations and thought provoking questions. This part of the book makes the reader wonder
what the outcome of time traveling might be but it is obvious that the Time Traveler
wholeheartedly believes in time travel.
Key Idea 2 In a moment my hand was on the lever and I had placed a month between myself and
these monsters. What a classic, wonderfully imaginative science fiction sentence. The story is
completely and utterly engrossing. The fact that the book was published in 1895 and science
lovers can still love and appreciate this book and H.G. Wells

Analysis Of Book 19 In The Odyssey
Book 19 of the epic poem The Odyssey is written by the great poet Homer. Homer s specific use
of language and epic conventions help develop the plot, specifically Odysseus disguise and
whether or not it will work on the people in the house. It also helps to establish Eurycleia, the
nurse, and the suitors as well as Penelope. In the passage, Odysseushas entered his home for the
first time since his return when he left almost twenty years ago. Disguised as a beggar, Odysseus
tells his own story through the beggar s words to his wife, Penelope, but never reveals his true
identity. After Penelope is deeply moved by the knowledge that her husband is still alive, she

We bear a striking resemblance to each other, as you have had the wit to say yourself. (19. 430 37)
This part of the passage serves to show Odysseus cunning wit and to also foreshadow the nurse
discovering Odysseus identity. Homer uses the epithet wily Odysseus to tell the audience (if
they didn t already know) that Odysseus must have been pretty clever to come up with such a
good excuse so fast. Homer also gives us more information about the nurse, saying that she is an
old woman that has seen much and remembers Odysseus from before he left to Troy. This part of
the passage also serves to foreshadow the fact that the nurse will soon discover who Odysseus is,
in the quote she begins to recognize just how alike the beggar and Odysseus are.
HomerВґs use of poetic language is a useful tool to develop a string of affairs in the Odyssey. When
Eurycleia recognizes Odysseus in his disguised appearance she feels a deep sorrow and
commiseration for him. She understands and knows that Odysseus s fate is a result of his own
constant hubris and his total disregard of the gods and their power:
Oh my child, how helpless I am to help you

Reaction Paper On The Experience Machine
What if you could reprogram your life to feel, be and experience exactly what you wanted to?
Robert Nozick; an American Philosopher; targeted hedonist utilitarianism by introducing The
experience machine a thought experiment that he d developed to further apprehend whether our
ultimate goal in life was simply pleasure, or if there was something deeper and more complex
which we aspire to achieve. Philosophers have widely accepted that pleasure is the absolute highest
valuable good that we can obtain in life; the most desirous thing in the world. However, happinessis
one of many components of the human life. In 1971 Robert Nozick introduced a philosophical
experiment called The Experience Machine which proposed that neuropsychologist could stimulate
your brain using electrodes. Hooking up to this machine would mean that you would reprogram
your life to experience your ultimate fantasies and goals. Whether it be becoming a financially
successful person, Climbing Mount Everest, or simply finding the perfect romantic partner. While
in the experience machine, you d have no idea that what you were experiencing was a virtual
reality projected from this machine into your mind. Robert Nozick raised the question, Would you
enter The Experience Machine or do you believe there is something more that we value in life?
Entering the machine would mean that you believed simply having pleasurable experiences is the
only valuable thing in life. Not attaching to the machine would

Arguments Against Interracial Adoption
Interracial adoption has long been a contentious issue even among devoted adoption supporters.
Parents who chose to take these children help them escape life in foster care. Adoption is a
permanent obligation that impact the whole family, especially your adoptive child. It is
important to look past the lovable faces and think through the ups and downs of interracial
adoption. Before the 1940 s it was not acceptable for white parents to adopt a child of a different
culture? During this time, efforts were made to place children with adoptive families with the
same skin color and religion. Then in 1944 the Boys and Girl Aid Society noticed a growing
number of minority children waiting for adoption. This group focused on the children of all... Show

Supporters of interracial adoption have argued that interracial empowers the community at large
just by their presence. They build consciousness of how people of different races can mix and
relate positively to each other. In addition, studies have shown that children s self esteem,
adjustment, and the capacity to form bonds were not adversely affected by their adoption. Still,
parents should be aware that children of a racial minority group develop their sense of ethnic
identity differently. Parents need to make sure their children are showing proper and positive
environments. Last but not least, racism is a problem adoptive parents cannot avoid. However,
they should openly discuss that there will be people that dislike them simply because of the color
of their skin. Parents will not be able to protect their child at all times, but steps can be taken to
protect the child. For instance, stopping Uncle Joe from coming to Thanksgiving because you
know that he makes off colored jokes that will hurt you and your child. To a move to a community
where there is a mix of cultural

The Rights Of An International Human Right
The right to be forgotten is a concept discussed and put into practice in the European Union since
2006. In May 2014, the European Court of Justice ruled that EU citizens have a right to be
forgotten, that they could request that search engines remove links to pages deemed private, even
if the pages themselves remain on the Internet. Originally this law was planned in 1995 but called

close that loophole for European users. The websites will be censored results when they search

many practical effects, but the case still has symbolic importance as Google tangles with national

Explain What Causes The Change In Heart Rate And Pulse Rate
What causes the change in heart rate and pulse rate with exercise is that during exercise, it
requires the heart to pump more blood out to specific organs at a faster rate in order for the organs
to send the necessary amount of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles involved in exercise so that
they keep working.
Heart rate equals pulse rate at rest and after exercise because blood flows towards the heart and
radial and carotid arteries at the same rate along the same pathway, or loop.
The change in cardiac cycle length with exercise affects heart muscle perfusion and time for
ventricular filling because since exercise calls for more blood to the muscles, the heart needs to
pump blood quickly at a faster rate. As the heart pumps faster, there

William Shakespeare s Julius Caesar Essay
Power is a highly coveted mistress. She is sought after by senators, presidents, kings, and
emperors. Most of them willing to do whatever it takes to get her. The history of this world is
overrun with conflict and war as different parties compete for her hand. There are those that will
obtain her by physical force on the battlefield, while others seduce her to their side through sweet
persuasion. However, the act of obtaining power is nothing compared to the work of keeping her.
Power is an unfaithful mistress, in need of constant wooing. In William Shakespeare s Julius Caesar
, the battle for power is always in a state of flux, constantly changing hands. Though the players in
this play sometimes use physical force to obtain power, it is persuasion and manipulation that have
the strong hold on her. Through close examination of this text, the use of persuasion and
manipulation in obtaining and maintaining power will be explored. When the play first opens there
is a celebration in the streets because Julius Caesar has proven victorious over Pompeyin battle.
However, this action is quickly rebuffed by tribunes Flavius and Marullus, who are quick to remind
the plebeians that they once loved Pompey:

Knew you not Pompey? Many a time and oft

The Big Stick s Achievements
Matthew Del Rosso Honors US History (2) 08 March 2016 The Big Stick s Achievements
During presidency, the president is known to carry many duties under their belt. Some go wrong,
while the majority has turn into major historical accomplishments. Some of the accomplishments
have affected the country for many years and on. As many presidents have achieved their duties
beyond expectation, Teddy Roosevelt was one of the outstanding presidents who have done so.
Teddy has a long list of his accomplishments, but there are five that have sent him above all.
Teddy Roosevelt was always fascinated with nature. His first important achievement was the
beginning of the National Park System. He was very set upon keeping the Earth clean. Roosevelt
saw how Americans were inadvertently killing the Earth with pollution, so he got together with
preservationists and solved the problem. The first feeble step toward conservation had been taken
with the Desert Land Act of 1877, under which the federal government sold arid land cheaply on
the condition that the purchaser irrigate the thirsty soil within three years. This was important in
the overall project because it got the ball rolling and opened many Americans eyes to the growing
issue of pollution. However, More successful was the Forest Reserve Act of 1891, authorizing the
president to set aside public forests as national parks and other reserves. Under this statute some 46
million acres of magnificent trees were rescued

Implementing A Healthcare Information Infrastructure
CPOE Implementation Challenges
Many healthcare organizations remain focused on continually improving their operations to better
align with industry and government best practices. Specifically, the improvement in quality of
healthcare has gained interest among policy makers in recent years (Carlfjord, Lindberg, Bendtsen,
Nilsen Andersson, 2010, p. 1). This is likely because healthcare policy makers strive to overcome
some of the larger scale issues affecting the industry and patient care. One of the issues that
hospitals and other healthcare organizations want to correct is how many mistakes are made by

Hospitals have begun implementing Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) systems
intended to streamline and computerize the process of maintaining patient records and prescribing
medications. These systems allow hospital administrators and healthcare professionals to quickly
access clinical guidelines, recommendations, patient information, and other factors critical to
patient care all at once. It was the intention of the hospital that the implementation and expense of
this new system would reduce the number of errors detected.
However, one case study at Springfield General Hospital demonstrated how sometimes these
implementation processes fail to make measurable improvements. In fact, at Springfield General
Hospital, the overall number of these types of mistakes increased after implementation instead of
reducing it. The hospital evaluated the situation and found glaring issues after its implementation of
its CPOE.

In evaluating why the CPOE made the situation worse, first it is important to note that the
information listed within the system was not accurate. Healthcare providers relied upon the data
within the CPOE to make decisions in terms of dosage and possible medication interactions.

nature as God, that he has suffered for our sins (2:24; 3:18; 4:1). Peter does not only describe God
as trinity separately but also indicates a relationship, which is found between the Son, Jesus, and
the Father (1:21; 3:11, 22). We also see Peter giving indication of God s presence among his
people today, which is being nurtured through his Spirit (1:12). Peter focuses on the three fold
being of God and the different roles each character has in his plan to restore humanity. To see the
view of humanity from Peter writing is somewhat challenging; however, we see throughout the
text that humanity does have a sinful nature from birth (1:14; 2:16; 3:8 9; 4:3 4). Another thing
that can be see through out Peter s text is that he sees humanity as twofold, God s people, and
those who are not (2:9 10), or in other words he also mentions Gentiles and Jews (2:12; 4:3).
Also we see that Peter has a specific view on marriage within humanity, marriage is between one
husband and one wife (3:1, 7). In the text there are several indications that Peter sees a hierarchy
among humanity, which needs to be obeyed and followed. This hierarchy is mentioned between
slaves and their masters, emperor and citizens, and elders and the young (2:13, 17 18, 5:1). Peter s
words also seem to indicate

American Symbolism In Hills Like White Elephants
Title In Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway, an American man exhibits control
over his lover, Jig, as they talk at a train station. Stereotypical with the role of women, Jig lacks
authority and control, not only in her relationship with the American, but in her day to day life,
as shown in her inability to act independently. The American s conversational coercion instills Jig
with a false sense of autonomy in the relationship, ultimately pigeonholing her into submission.
Almost immediately, Jig is established not as an equal, but rather as the American s
subordinate. While her partner is referred to as the American, and the waitress is referred to as
the woman, Jig is only known as the girl throughout most of the story. This description
demonstrates the man s control over Jig, distinguishing him as superior to his lover (Rankin). Jig
s inferiority is further shown through her lack of independent identity, as she is instead
characterized as an extension of her lover. This is displayed in her inability to even choose a
drink for herself, relying on the American to decide for her What should we drink? the girl asked
(1,Hemingway), and even speak for her. This action strips Jig of independence and control, in fact,
her dependence on the American causes her to constantly seek for his approval: she changes the
subject when he becomes... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Mythology In Fan Mythology
The definition of the term Myth is that it is defined by its content, context, and/or its function.
Most often when we think or hear the world myth we think of ancient Greek and Roman stories
that tell us tales of gods, heroes, and monsters; in the modern world it is also used to butter up
advertisements, and of course in fan fiction.
When you look at the concept of myth it has been important to the practice and analysis of fan
work, including fan fiction, on three levels: content, form, and theory. In terms of content,
traditional tales including mythologies provide us with characters, narratives, monsters, and story
worlds for fans to use in the generation of new fictions, as proven by the 2,173 stories in the Greek
and Roman Mythology ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead, mass culture is a method of cultural control, a key part of the workings of capitalist
domination.
However, there is a strong distinction between mass and popular culture that seems to be no longer
defensible to most media scholars and cultural critics, studies of fan creations such as fanfiction
have shown us just how entwined certain popular forms are with mass culture. Describing the texts
of popular culture as myths then becomes a way of claiming profitable culture as common culture
and the basis for a genuine fan culture that exists outside capitalist networks of production,
distribution, and consumption.
Of the 2,173 fics on AO3, around half remain within the Greek mythic historical story world:
such fics set are set within the Iliad world rather than the Odyssey, as well as fics about the
Olympian gods such as the popular Persephone/Hades, to the obscure, Helenus/Neoptolemus. The
most common kind of story that can be found here is a retelling of a myth that fleshes out the
description of the classical gods and heroes according to modern fictional and psychological
norms. There are two main kinds of modern retelling fanfictions on the AO3 site. The first being
stories about how the ancient gods and heroes have survived the modern world, and second, being
crossover fics. In certain crossovers, the characters from modern popular culture texts meet
classical gods and heroes, as in liliaeth s The Pet Whisperer

Rehabilitation and Recidivism
Unit 4 Project
Larinda K. Kimbrell
Kaplan University
CJ499 01P: Bachelors Capstone in Criminal Justice (P)
Barbara Mitchell
June 16, 2010
Abstract
Over many years there has been great debate about whether rehabilitation reduces the rate of
recidivism in criminal offenders. There has been great controversy over whether anything works
to reduce recidivism and great hope that rehabilitation would offer a reduction in those rates. In
this paper I will introduce information and views on the reality of whether rehabilitation does
indeed reduce recidivism. Proposed is a quasi experiment, using a group of offenders that received
rehabilitation services and an ex post facto group that did not? I intend to prove that rehabilitation
services do ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cullen amp; Gendreau (2000). Cullen and Gendreau (2000). give us some history on the restorative
incarceration. The original theory of restorative justice was based on simple human behavior
regulated by incentive instead of punishment, which instituted the concept of parole as a means of
reward for a prisoner for rehabilitation. Further studies in criminology proved that this idea was too
simplistic and married it to the positivist theory of criminology and instituted individual assessment
and treatment for each prisoner based on their specific needs for reformation.
As Rothman (1980) and many others have pointed out, this ideal system was never implemented as
intended. Although the contours of the correctional system changed the juvenile court,
indeterminate sentencing, probation, parole, and discretion became integral features of this system
the resources and knowledge needed to provide effective treatment to offenders were in short
supply. Cullen and Gendreau (2000).
Cullen and Gendreau compare and contrast the many studies on this subject, the meta analyses
conclusions, their strengths, weaknesses, inconsistencies, and the trends that follow the studies of
the time. They offer their insight on effective corrections and individualizing treatments based on
predictors for crime and behavioral knowledge, as well as conclude that recidivism is reduced by
rehabilitation.
Solution

  • 2. Examples Of A Paradigm According To Khn What is a paradigm, according to Kuhn? (8 pts) According to Kuhn, a paradigm is universally recognized scientific achievements (a theory of science), which become a framework for scientific research and knowledge. It is a set of practices that defines science for a particular period of time. This paradigm provides a scientific community a model, within which it evolves. The paradigm defines what is to be observed and analyzed, what kind of questions should be asked, how they should be structured, how the results of the experiment should be interpreted, how the research should be conducted as well as equipment it should be conducted with etc. What is the difference, according to Kuhn, between normal and revolutionary science? The groundwork of a new paradigm must already be in a place in order for new scientific discoveries to be made. His new concepts and theories enabled him to see the phenomenon of the pendulum. Before this the pendulum wasn t seen or addressed within the old paradigm Why does Kuhn say that, before and after a scientific revolution, scientists live in different worlds ? If Kuhn is correct in claiming this, why would a scientific community choose a new paradigm? (7) Kuhn says that scientists live in different worlds when speaking of scientists living in different paradigms because people essentially start thinking in a complete different way, when converting to a new scientific paradigm. They stop thinking the old way and theories, which belonged to old paradigms, become impossible to explain. Paradigms cannot be explained through one another, since there is no ... The Great City Of New York Glamour and Riches Since the introduction of films and theatres the great city of New York has often been depicted as an idyllic place to live, where people go to make their dreams come true. One movie in particular enthral us in its representation of New York City, Breakfast at Tiffany s based on Truman Capote s novella brings the glamourous atmosphere of the high society to our door step. Produced in 1961, it also opens a window to the mores of the time. This movie made New York City the place to be to get rich and live free. It acts as an icon for the American Dream, a City of hope. As the film opens on a scene of Holyday Golightly, actress Audrey Hepburn, still wearing an evening gown getting out of a taxi and gazing at the displays of the Tiffany s store on Fifth Avenue, the spectator can already feel the richness of New York. Breakfast at Tiffany s describes New York as a grand place full of light and richness; nowhere in the movie do we see a person struggling to survive. Moreover, even though Holy is utterly unable to manage her money, the City itself seems to provide for her whenever she is in need. A new opportunity to enrich her always seems to appear out of nowhere. Consequently, New York appears as a benefactor bestowing its greatness to the citizens, opportunities and chances to make it big await at every corner. During her time as a captive elephant Tania has rarely been given time to bond with other members of her species. Tania has been living for 39 years. At the Targu Mures Zooshe is confined into a tiny enclosure, not given the company of any other elephants, and forced to stand in her own urine and feces. This is due to sporadic, and very unsanitary cleaning of the practices of the zoo. Tania the elephants story began in 1978 when her herd was wiped out in the wild. After that she had spent every one of her days looking through the bars of zoos across the continent. This story and many others is the sad truth of what zoos do to the animals that live behind their bars. This is why Zoos should be exterminated. In the United Kingdom there was a welfare concern for all of the elephants. 75% of elephants were overweight, only 16% could walk normally, and solitary 20% of the elephants were free of foot problems. This is why zoos do more harm than good. • 6. Identity And Identity In The Whore s Child By Richard Russo The Whore s Child is a famous short story by Richard Russo. The story follows the life of a nun, Sister Ursula, as she joins a college fiction writing course and begins writing her life story. As she writes, with the help of her professor and the feedback from her class, she discovers more about herself and the truth about her life. A key element of this story is the depth to which the characters are explored, given the limited amount of time for characterization. A primary way to explore this characterization is through the works of prominent identity theorists one of which being Canary et al. This theory talks about some of the ways that identity is developed, through concepts such as social cognition, schema, and the four cognitive... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another key aspect of Canary s theory is that of the four cognitive processes stereotypes, attributions, person perception, and interpersonal goals. According to Canary, stereotypes are when categories are about people and are based on their group membership (Canary 114). In Russo s story, Sister Ursula writes about how, as a child, she understood that her mother s being a prostitute made her the whore s child, that her mother s wickedness diminished her father s value (8). This excerpt from Sister Ursula s story establishes how the negative stereotypes around her mother s lifestyle impacted her childhood. Even today, prostitution is considered dishonorable in society, especially within religious circles, and thus, Sister Ursula s mother s stigma was attached to her as a child, which caused her to be inherently disliked in the nun community. Again, this could be a contributing factor to Sister Ursula s cold and steadfast demeanor, as she had to grow up protecting herself from the judgmental gazes of her superiors and peers. Attributions are the next facet of the four cognitive processes that can be seen in The Whore s Child. They are defined as assessments of the cause of an action or behavior, (Canary 111) and can be both internal and external. Internal meaning that the behavior is attributed to qualities such as ... • 9. Similarities Between Kojiki And Greek Mythology Similar myths and legends have been coexisting throughout the world, regardless of eastern and western cultures, and in different languages. Greek myth is probably the world s most famous and beloved than any other tale of legends stories. Surprisingly, Greek myth and Japanese myth share many similarities in the creation of the world and legend stories through their mythologies. Japan s Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters) is a collection of Japanese historical records as well as Japanese mythologies, in which the legend explains the creation of the world and birth of deities. However, Greek mythologies, on the other hand, do not have an official written record of mythologies or religious text like the Bible or the Kojiki, but earliest story teller like Homer and Hesiod shared richest sources in poems, attempt to explain the beginning of the universe in human language. Both Kojiki and Greek mythologies describe common belief in the creation of the world, in which gods give birth to another to form the world. In Kojiki, two of the seven gods who came into existence, Izanagi and Izanami give birth to many nature deities, creating the world. But because Izanami gives birth to too many deities, she dies while giving birth to the fire deity. In result of her death, enraged Izanagi kills the fire deity. In contrast, Greek myth describes the creation of the world with the four gods who came to existences, Gaea (earth) Chaos, Tartarus (Hell), and then Eros. Gaea asexually gives birth to Uranus (Sky) and marries her son. She then bears three types of gods; the Titans, the Cyclopes, and the Hecathonchires. However, Uranus repels at the monstrous creatures and sends Cyclopes and Hecatonchires down to Tartarus (Hell). Frustrated by Uranus s action, Gaea forges the first sickle, gives it to her youngest son Cronos, and have him punish his father, Uranus. Once Uranus returns to make love to Gaea, Cronos emasculates him. Here we see the similarities in the creation of the world by birth and death of God by the hands of another god with fury. Another similarity can be spotted on the death of the loved ones, in which the god or a hero is visiting the world of the dead to meet their wives. In Kojiki, after the death of ... For me the word is always associated with architect, because an architect is the one who makes architecture real. Architecture as people understand it nowadays probably came to life with the species homo sapiens because they are self conscious, before it was just a very primitive thing. You could say DNA is an architect because it builds, in fact it is probably the best and wisest architect humans know of, therefore we are also architecture because anything that is built and is physical can be architecture by definition even Wikipedia states that. Architecture is considered art, plus everything that involves with it like the process of designing. We have been tinkering with ideas for autonomous vehicles for almost a century and a few companies have even been successful in designing a fully functioning self driving car. Roads full of these video game esque cars controlled by artificial intelligence or other means of autonomy may not be as distant in the future as one might think. This, being a drastic change in the way we travel, could cause many issues. Due to these potential issues, it is in our best interest to raise questions before we implement these technologies. One possible question is: have we thought out any ramifications this might cause, and if so, do we have an approach to fix them? Engineers have been tinkering with ideas for driverless vehicles since the 1920s. In 1925 the first driverless car, named the Linrrican Wonder, was taken through traffic jams up broadway and across fifth avenue in New York. In a typical segment, the ventral nerve cord has four pairs of segmental nerves that extend laterally and dorsally around the body wall (Stephenson, 1930). Some of the segment s nerve fibers are sensitive and quickly detect any stimulation to the worms body (Lesiuk, N. M. and C. D. Drewes, 1999). Other fibers are motor fibers that supply wall muscle cells. The nerve cord controls the worm s muscles that, in return, cause it to move. Worms use their muscles to crawl through the mud by getting extra traction from bristles that can be seen from the side of their body. Worms will rapidly pull back their head or tail if it is touched. Worms that hold their tail up to the water surface may quickly withdraw it if a shadow suddenly occurs. Explain What Causes The Change In Heart Rate And Pulse Rate What causes the change in heart rate and pulse rate with exercise is that during exercise, it requires the heart to pump more blood out to specific organs at a faster rate in order for the organs to send the necessary amount of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles involved in exercise so that they keep working. Heart rate equals pulse rate at rest and after exercise because blood flows towards the heart and radial and carotid arteries at the same rate along the same pathway, or loop. The change in cardiac cycle length with exercise affects heart muscle perfusion and time for ventricular filling because since exercise calls for more blood to the muscles, the heart needs to pump blood quickly at a faster rate. • 41. American Symbolism In Hills Like White Elephants Title In Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway, an American man exhibits control over his lover, Jig, as they talk at a train station. Stereotypical with the role of women, Jig lacks authority and control, not only in her relationship with the American, but in her day to day life, as shown in her inability to act independently. The American s conversational coercion instills Jig with a false sense of autonomy in the relationship, ultimately pigeonholing her into submission. Almost immediately, Jig is established not as an equal, but rather as the American s subordinate. While her partner is referred to as the American, and the waitress is referred to as the woman, Jig is only known as the girl throughout most of the story. This description demonstrates the man s control over Jig, distinguishing him as superior to his lover (Rankin). Jig s inferiority is further shown through her lack of independent identity, as she is instead characterized as an extension of her lover. This is displayed in her inability to even choose a drink for herself, relying on the American to decide for her What should we drink? the girl asked (1,Hemingway), and even speak for her. This action strips Jig of independence and control, in fact, her dependence on the American causes her to constantly seek for his approval: she changes the subject when he becomes... • 42. Mythology In Fan Mythology The definition of the term Myth is that it is defined by its content, context, and/or its function. Most often when we think or hear the world myth we think of ancient Greek and Roman stories that tell us tales of gods, heroes, and monsters; in the modern world it is also used to butter up advertisements, and of course in fan fiction. When you look at the concept of myth it has been important to the practice and analysis of fan work, including fan fiction, on three levels: content, form, and theory. In terms of content, traditional tales including mythologies provide us with characters, narratives, monsters, and story worlds for fans to use in the generation of new fictions, as proven by the 2,173 stories in the Greek and Roman Mythology ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead, mass culture is a method of cultural control, a key part of the workings of capitalist domination. However, there is a strong distinction between mass and popular culture that seems to be no longer defensible to most media scholars and cultural critics, studies of fan creations such as fanfiction have shown us just how entwined certain popular forms are with mass culture. Describing the texts of popular culture as myths then becomes a way of claiming profitable culture as common culture and the basis for a genuine fan culture that exists outside capitalist networks of production, distribution, and consumption. Of the 2,173 fics on AO3, around half remain within the Greek mythic historical story world: such fics set are set within the Iliad world rather than the Odyssey, as well as fics about the Olympian gods such as the popular Persephone/Hades, to the obscure, Helenus/Neoptolemus. The most common kind of story that can be found here is a retelling of a myth that fleshes out the description of the classical gods and heroes according to modern fictional and psychological norms. There are two main kinds of modern retelling fanfictions on the AO3 site. The first being stories about how the ancient gods and heroes have survived the modern world, and second, being crossover fics. In certain crossovers, the characters from modern popular culture texts meet classical gods and heroes, as in liliaeth s The Pet Whisperer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Rehabilitation and Recidivism Unit 4 Project Larinda K. Kimbrell Kaplan University CJ499 01P: Bachelors Capstone in Criminal Justice (P) Barbara Mitchell June 16, 2010 Abstract Over many years there has been great debate about whether rehabilitation reduces the rate of recidivism in criminal offenders. There has been great controversy over whether anything works to reduce recidivism and great hope that rehabilitation would offer a reduction in those rates. In this paper I will introduce information and views on the reality of whether rehabilitation does indeed reduce recidivism. Proposed is a quasi experiment, using a group of offenders that received rehabilitation services and an ex post facto group that did not? I intend to prove that rehabilitation services do ... The original theory of restorative justice was based on simple human behavior regulated by incentive instead of punishment, which instituted the concept of parole as a means of reward for a prisoner for rehabilitation. Further studies in criminology proved that this idea was too simplistic and married it to the positivist theory of criminology and instituted individual assessment and treatment for each prisoner based on their specific needs for reformation. As Rothman (1980) and many others have pointed out, this ideal system was never implemented as intended. Although the contours of the correctional system changed the juvenile court, indeterminate sentencing, probation, parole, and discretion became integral features of this system the resources and knowledge needed to provide effective treatment to offenders were in short supply. Cullen and Gendreau (2000). Cullen and Gendreau compare and contrast the many studies on this subject, the meta analyses conclusions, their strengths, weaknesses, inconsistencies, and the trends that follow the studies of the time. They offer their insight on effective corrections and individualizing treatments based on predictors for crime and behavioral knowledge, as well as conclude that recidivism is reduced by rehabilitation.
