The Unknown Citizen By F. H. Auden, A P
In the three literary works that were chosen, The Known Citizen by W. H. Auden, A P by John Updike,
and Antigone by Sophocles has a theme that is known to be conformity and rebellious. The poem The
Unknown Citizen is mainly about the unknown man who is a conformist because he listens to all the
rules that are made for the society. On the other hand, the short story A P has a conformist character
who enforces the rules for the supermarket and a rebellious character who goes against the rules for
the supermarket. Similar to A P the play Antigone also has a conformist character who likes to go by
the rules that the society has made; however, a rebellious character who is always goes against the
rules made for the society. The three different writings that represent a character who conforms within
these writings. A conformist is someone who follows the rules that are given to them without any
complaints. On the other hand, the three literary writings also have characters that are rebellious
within these writings. A rebellious person is someone who does not follow the rules that are given to
them; therefore, the rebellions go against the rules.
Within the three different pieces of writings there is a character who represents conformity within
them. For instance, W. H. Auden wrote the poem The Unknown Citizen . This poem has a main
character that represents a conformist; however, this character does not have a name which is why the
poem is called The Unknown

Mannerism In Speed-The Shawl, And Faustus By William...
David Mamet is an American playwright born in 1947, having the additional titles as an essayist,
screenwriter, and film director. Mamet has written several plays, including Speed the Plow, China
Doll, The Shawl, and Faustus, and succeeded in a movie adaptation of his play Glengarry Glen Ross
in 1992. He grew up in Chicago, Illinois until he relocated outside the city, living with his parents that
later divorced until he moved. His sister Lynn admitted their home life was cruel, influencing anger to
be present in Mamet s work (Editors). In relation to his work, other themes of his work include:
relationships (deception, loyalty, etc.), success and failure, and speech mannerisms (persuasion and
alike). Other attributes of Mamet s work include intricate dialogue and characters with individualized
mannerisms; for example: Mamet believes that people speak what they are influenced by. Mamet was
influence most by Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter, Lanford Wilson, and Bertolt Brecht, beginning his
unique use of dramatic language (Whatley 12).
As for his play American Buffalo, the following themes are present: business, loyalty, friendship, and
ethics. In 1972, the infamous Watergate Scandal occurred; the importance of this event can tie in with
American Buffalo s creation. President Nixon s time in office compelled him to resolve conflicts he
deemed just, however Americans lost their trust in Nixon after the Watergate Scandal happened. In the
play, Bobby also Bob is portrayed as a

In The Wake Of The Massive Securities Fraud That Caused
In the wake of the massive securities fraud that caused the collapse of Enron, WorldCom, Adelphia
and other public companies, Congress hastily, and by an impressive margin (99 0 in the Senate and
423 3 in the House), passed the most sweeping securities legislation since the Securities Exchange Act
of 1934. (Managers and the Legal Environment, 8th Edition, Strategies for the 21st Century, 2016)

It extended the statute of limitations on certain actions brought by defrauded investors, and it provided
that debts incurred from judgements or settlements relating to securities fraud are not dischargeable in
bankruptcy. SOX also requires that auditors retain records relevant to financial audits for seven years
after the completion of the audit. (Managers and the Legal Environment, 8th Edition, Strategies for the
21st Century, 2016), these records include an accounting firm s work papers and certain other
documents that contain conclusions, opinions, analyses or financial data related to the audit or review.

Whistleblower protection for employees of publicly traded companies
The statutes enforced by OSHA contain whistleblower or anti retaliation provisions that generally
provide that employers may not discharge or retaliate against an employee because the employee has
filed a complaint or otherwise exercised any rights provided to employees. Each law requires that
complaints be filed within a certain number of days after the alleged retaliation. Complaints may be
filed orally or in writing, and OSHA will accept the complaint in any language. (United State
Department of Labor, 2017)

Deming, on the other hand, had a system he established using a fourteen point formula which
recognized the purpose toward improvement, leadership, and training, as well as taking actions to
ensure a successful process improvement.
Standards of Performance Crosby s performance standard consisted of having a zero defect approach,
which meant everyone involved (supplier and customer included) must understand. Crosby defined
zero defect as not being a literal zero defect (as that is not always possible), but rather producing
goods or services within agreed upon tolerances and requirements for quality and costs. Juran had a
four step formula when it came to performance standards: establish goals to be reached, establish
plans for these goals, meet the goals, and rewards based on results achieved. Deming had a process
called the Deming Wheel, which was an adaptation of the PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, and Act) Problem
Solving Cycle. To break it down, Plan involved designing components to improve results, Do
employed the plan, Check evaluated the measurements, and Act made decisions based on the changes
needed to improve the process.
Quality Measurements Juran s perspective on quality was based on five general measures, the
measures being the cost of poor quality, defects, product/process features, customer needs, and
customer behavior. Deming s measurements were based on the Kaizen approach, which involved the
evaluation of each operation

Using Alternatives Sources Of Energy
Up until a few years ago, we used to exploit fossil fuels for almost all of our needs (heating,
transportation, etc.) without thinking if there are enough supplies or even about their negative effects
their emissions cause to the environment. According to many scientific investigations our fossil fuel
resources (oil, coal and gas) are running out, furthermore their emissions pollute the environment and
contribute to the greenhouse effect. Undoubtedly, these situations as well as the fact that the demand
for electricity is increasing more and more globally made us thinking about using alternatives sources
of energy. Many possible fuels are being tested at the moment in order to find which one is the most
suitable in terms of efficiency, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Despite the fact that things seemed to run smoothly, in 1973 when the oil crisis began, nuclear
industry had to face environmental issues which made the construction of power stations such an
expensive deal. Nowadays, nuclear power seem to be more promising than ever due to the increased
demand of electricity. After many investigations experts have determined that there are two ways that
nuclear power can be utilized. The first way is called Nuclear Fission , this way is mainly used in
power stations, uranium and other heavy elements are used as fuels. By its reaction heavy cores
separate into medium sized cores, where energy is released. The following figure shows how much
electricity was generated in 6 countries by nuclear power in 2007.
The second way that nuclear power can utilizes is called Nuclear Fusion , this way needs more
investigation in order to be applied in power stations. Hydrogen and other light elements would be
used as fuels and from its reaction fuse light cores are converted into medium sized cores, where
energy is released. Nuclear Fusion s 2 most promising reactions are the DT reaction, which fuses
deuterium (heavy isotope of hydrogen) with tritium (heavier isotope of hydrogen), making Helium
(light monoatomic gas) and the DD reaction, which fuses deuterium with deuterium. Despite their
different operations both fission and

Family Planning Methods
Many women in developing countries do not have access to services like family planning, antenatal
care and delivery by a trained personnel (WHO, 2007). For example, in a country like Uganda, only
30 percent of married women from the age of 15 to 49 use modern family planning methods (Salwa
Bitar McKenzie Lamborne, 2014).
Low rates of maternal health service utilisation in sub Saharan Africa have also been attributed to the
unequal gender relations arising from religious beliefs, teachings and practices and cultural influences
(Katherine Marshall, 2013; UNAIDS, 2014; International Community of women living with

like the World Bank (1993) and the UN Global Strategy for Women s and Children s Health (WHO,

healthcare, there is need for strong partnership between the public health care sector and the private
sector particularly FBOs (Gill Z. et al., 2008; Widmer M et al. 2011; Gill Z et al. 2008). It is against
this background that I explore the different actors/providers of maternal and general healthcare in
developing countries.

defined by Duff J.F et al (2015: 1787) as, bodies charged under rule of law with governance of society
at international, national, regional and local levels . An exception is when the texts make reference to
specific governments, which disassociates the terms from each other.

Dealing with Conflicts in the Workplace
Conflict Management Styles
Conflict occurs in organizations whenever a difference of opinions exists. People disagree over many
things including but not limited to, policies and procedures, the overall direction of the company, and
distribution of rewards. This type of conflict is substantive conflict, as described in our reading text
organizational behavior as a, fundamental disagreement over ends or goals to be pursued . The second
type of conflict is emotional conflict; which involves, interpersonal difficulties that arise over feelings
of anger, mistrust, dislike, fear, resentment, and the like. This type of conflict occurs when two or
more persons do not see eye to eye or simply do not get along for whatever reason. I cannot ... Show

In our company many of the technicians have never been anything other than the technician. They
have never experienced what it is like to be the customer depending on someone else for technological
knowledge and expertise. I try to get my employees to place themselves in the shoes of the customer
and treat them, as they would expect to be treated. This works both ways; I have never been a
technician and do not understand a lot of the problems and frustrations that they experience. So in
turn, we share our thoughts, our experiences and our ideas on how we can make our organization a
more profitable one. We each realize our limitations and together strive for the common goals of the
organization. Another one of my particular strengths is my ability to perceive conflict in situations
before and as they arise. I can sense that if we are to implement a particular policy and/or procedure
how my staff will react to it. This helps us to plan ways to eliminate conflict before it even begins.
Conflict is inevitable when diverse people from different circumstances and backgrounds work
together. Everyone had different visions and ideas as to how various situations should be dealt with. If
conflict is not managed in an appropriate manner it can become time consuming and a waste of
management resources. By acknowledging this and dealing with conflict in a forthright and
straightforward manner, conflict can

The Rise Of The Modern American Empire
UNIV 7210 Discussion #1 January 19 February 6
Discuss the extent to which American hegemony led to the rise of the modern American empire.
Which factors are the most significant and why?
How does American hegemony compare to that of the British Empire, which preceded it?
American control affected the ascent of the United States as the chief cash based superpower on the
planet. American control won toward the end of/conclusive feeling of WWII. Cash based power and
(firm and unfaltering nature/enduring nature/quality) were the foundation of the United States, and in
that capacity, turned into an impact to other (nations with a considerable measure of manufacturing

The United States subsequent to WWII has kept on growing its realm through outside issues and the
approach of country building. Much like the British Empire, which happened before it, at its tallness
of force the British Empire controlled double the measure of area masses than that the United States.
(identified with one effective individual or nation controlling others) influence with America is
additionally clarified through cash based achievement. By Finance, the annihilation brought about by
WWII permitted America to expect cash based control all through the world. This was the aftereffect
of the debilitating of numerous (identified with Europe) nations included in the war, by that/in that
way permitting the United States to create half of the world s GDP.
One could present the defense that American control is more capable than British control ever was, at
the tallness of force for Great Britain in the nineteenth century the nation was still third in GDP and in
addition military cost by World Finance. In spite of the fact that the United States included/offered
more to the overall GDP in the twentieth century and also military cost, the parity ascribed to the
Soviet Union makes these two (identified with one capable individual or nation controlling others)
controls fundamentally the same.
The British Empire was won by winning (by power). They would

The Pros And Cons Of Genetic Engineering
Modern technology has changed rapidly over the years, and one of the most life changing innovations
is genetic engineering. Genetic engineering is the deliberate modification of characteristics of an
organism by manipulating its genetic material. It is a set of biotechnologies used to change the genetic
makeup of cells, including the transfer of genes, to produce improved organisms. Genetic engineering
techniques have been applied to numerous fields including research, agriculture, industrial
biotechnology, and medicine. Genetic engineering can be used for many manipulations in one s genes.
Particularly, it may be used for changing the sequence of genes so that if a person s DNA has a gene
for a certain disease it may be removed and prevented through genetic engineering. Another use may
be the manipulation of genes by inserting into a child favorable traits, which are picked out by the
parent before the kid is born, through genetic engineering. Therefore, Genetic engineering should be
limited to altering genes that cause diseases. It should not be used to alter genes to make the perfect
baby. It should not be used to give favorable traits to a baby because this is immoral, and affects
biodiversity by limiting genetic diversity, over a period of time. And most significantly the
repercussions of genetic engineering are still unknown. Leon Kass poses the question, What standards
will guide the genetic engineers? (Kass, paragraph 32). This is a question we should be

How To Legalize Marijuana
Legalizing and regulating marijuana has been long sought after by many individuals. It would bring
one of the nation s largest cash crops under the rule of law, changing many things in the criminal,
medicine, job/tax world. The criminalization of marijuana used disproportionately harms young
people and people of color, sponsors massive levels of violence and corruption, and fails to curb youth
access. There were 658,000 arrests for marijuana possession in 2012, according to F.B.I. figures,
compared with 256,000 for cocaine, heroin and their derivatives. With marijuana being regulated and
distributed by the government, it would also bring many job opportunities to the market. Federal and

Federally legalizing marijuana would bring many new jobs and a very big new source of tax income.
Colorado s marijuana legalization is quickly turning the state into one of the most prosperous places in
the country. Not only has Colorado projected marijuana sales to be a billion dollar industry, but in
January of 2014 alone, the state pulled in over $3.5 million in tax revenue from legal pot sales. If that
trend continues, the state will enjoy an additional $40 million in tax revenue in the first year of
legalization. But that s not all you know those dismal unemployment figures plaguing the nation? Not
in states where pot is legal. Colorado is reporting 10,000 new jobs, all from the legalization of both
recreational and medical marijuana. 10,000 new jobs to each state in the United States would easily
improve the market, less unemployment. The state is now enjoying one of the lowest unemployment
rates in the nation 6% which is the lowest it has been since the recession started. So much for those
old sayings about pot heads being lazy. That s an additional 10,000 people in a labor force out
working, instead of collecting unemployment. That s good for everyone. Marijuana tax income in
Colorado and Washington have exceeded estimates made beforehand. Enforcing thousands of new
jobs, making lots of new money, helping the medical world, and reducing crime rate in the United
States it sounds as if marijuana should already be legal

Transition Of The Business, Client Organizations Are...
TRANSITION IN SCRUM WAY
SUMMARY
To meet and exceed the expectations of the Business, Client organizations are progressively looking at
using agile methodologies for software development. Agile methods attempt to minimize risk of
software development by developing software in short time boxes, called iterations. An agile software
development process release new working version of software at the end of every iteration. Scrum is
one of the most popular agile development methodologies increasingly being adopted by IT firms.
Scrum is an iterative and incremental Agile Software Development structure for managing product
development. It is a development stratagem where the development team works as a unit to reach a
common goal. Scrum enables a daily face to face communication among all team members and
disciplines in the project.
The scope of this paper is to provide an Outline on Scrum Methodology, its communication and
collaboration.
BODY
A key principle of Scrum is during a project the customers can change their minds about what they
want and need, which is called requirements churn, and that unpredicted challenges cannot be easily
addressed in traditional development methods. As such, Scrum adopts an empirical approach
accepting that the problem cannot be fully understood or defined, focusing instead on maximizing the
team s ability to deliver quickly and respond to rising requirements.

Domestic Violence Theory
Vulnerability is the level to which a community, person or society is unable to anticipate, deal with,
battle and recover from hardship. The United States is home to many vulnerable populations to
include but are not limited to; children, pregnant women, elderly people, malnourished people,
disabled veterans and domestic violence survivors. These individuals belong communities that have
been systematically oppressed through lack of representation, poor service availability and limited
resources. Domestic violence survivors are members of a diverse and complex community. Diverse in

I continued my study in pursuit of the doctoral degree in Biblical Studies by reading the text,

Scribes who copied the biblical text believed they were copying the very words of God. One group of
scribes committed to preserving God s word was the Masoretes. They did three things to preserve the
text they received: (1) they developed a system for writing vowels; (2) they developed a system of
accents for the Hebrew text; and (3) they developed a system of detailed notes from the text.
The majority of the text was written in Hebrew, the remainder in Aramaic. The most important
Hebrew copies of the Old Testament are the Masoretic text (the most reliable), the Samaritan
Pentateuch and the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Samaritan Pentateuch contains only Genesis through
Deuteronomy and originated with the Samaritans. The Dead Sea Scrolls contains part of every Old
Testament book except Ester. The Old Testament was also translated into other languages. The
Septuagint, a translation in Greek, has been helpful in resolving some portions of the Pentateuch and
the Targums helps us understand early Jewish interpretations.
How Do We Interpret the Bible?
Use the Grammatical Historical Method
Following the rules of hermeneutics helps us interpret the Bible. The grammatical historical method
seeks to determine what the text says grammatically and what it means historically. In order to arrive
at this understanding we must first consider the context in which the text was written.

Destruction of the American Dream in Arthur Miller s Death of A Salesman
A white picket fence surrounds the tangible icons of the American Dreams in the middle 1900 s: a
mortgage, an automobile, a kitchen appliance paid for on the monthly installment plan, and a silver
trophy representative of high school football triumph. A pathetic tale examining the consequences of
man s harmartias, Arthur Miller s Death of A Salesman satisfies many, but not all, of the essential
elements of a tragedy. Reality peels away the thin layers of Willy Loman s American Dream; a dream
built on a lifetime of poor choices and false values.
Although the characters are not of noble birth nor possess a heroic nature nor experience a reversal of

For Biff, the idea of success is an easy loan from an ex employer he has stolen from; for Hap, success
is obtaining a promotion by waiting for the merchandise manager to die. Inevitably, the Loman s
unrealistic idea about success is one of the steps in their downfall.
Equally as damaging, the Loman family lacks the ability to make the necessary and suitable choices to
pursue the American Dream. Although Willy is skillful with his hands and believes a man who can t
handle tools is disgusting, he chooses a lifetime career as a salesman, based on the fanciful image of
his father who abandoned Willy as a child and on the image of an 84 year old salesman who dies alone
in a train car to Boston. Willy takes pride in the craftsmanship he put into their house, yet believes a
salesman such as his father is better than a carpenter. Furthermore, he questions the purpose of
building because some stranger ll come along, move in, and that s that. Ironically, Willy is a better
carpenter than a salesman. He boasts on what an impact he makes on his clients, but in reality one of
the reasons he has a sexual rendezvous with a secretary is to get through to the buyers. Willy makes
another poor choice because of his hubris, or false pride, when he turns down Charley s job offer.
Similarly, false pride and the inability to make appropriate choices lead to Hap and Biff choosing
unsuitable occupations.

Vibrio Natriegen s Generation Time
Title: Vibrio natriegens s generation time and optimal growth environment using a Closed Growth
System.
Abstract: The objective of this experiment is to find out what the optimal growth environment is for V.
natriegens out of three different environments. The first is a Brain Heart Infusion broth (BHI) that
contains 50 mM of NaCl. The second is BHI containing 250 mM of NaCl. The third is BHI containing
1000 mM NaCl. In order to obtain this, a growth curve graph must be constructed for each different
environment, and the generation time of the bacteria in each environment must be calculated. The
optimal environment for V. natriegens was found to be the BHI with 250 mM of NaCl.
Introduction: The type environment that bacteria live ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is the y value posted in the upper right hand corner. The following data was obtained from the
Closed System Growth experiment:
As shown in the figure above, it is evident that V.natriegens grew faster when the Brain Heart Infusion
(BHI) broth contained 250mM NaCl. The # of bacterial cells at each time point was measured
following the equation given in the How to generate a bacterial growth curve supplemental material
posted on D2L. (2) The data was then recorded in the table listed above. A growth curve graph was
constructed using the data above which illustrated the differences between each of the different BHI
mixtures. The graph was then used to determine the generation time of V.natriegens for each different
environmental condition. In order to calculate the generation time (g) the mean growth rate (k) must
be calculated. The formula to do this is posted in the supplemental material How to generate a
bacterial growth curve on D2L. The k value calculated for each condition goes as follows:
At 50 mM NaCl k= 2.2 generations per hour
At 250 mM NaCl k= 4.7 generations per hour
At 1000 mM NaCl k= 3.2 generations per hour
The generation time for each condition goes as follows:
At 50 mM NaCl g= .45 hours per generation
At 250 mM NaCl g= .21 hours per generation
At 1000 mM NaCl g= .31 hours per generation
With all of these calculations the environment that is optimal for V. natriegens was determined.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Research Paper
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is diagnosed from many symptoms in many ways. Since the disorder
is most likely going to be inherited, doctors will look at the medical history of the family. Once the
background of family history is done, a physical examination of the patient will occur. The
examinations are done in various ways. One of the first examinations that physicians do would be the
CK ( creatine kinase) level blood test. Creatine Kinase is an enzyme that disclosures out damaging
muscles. The normal upper limit of serum CK is 200 units/L; in patients with DMD, levels are 5,000
to 15,000 units/L (Sussman, 2002). If the results of the CK blood test come back high this concludes
that the muscles have damaging occurring causing the

The As A Visual And Television Culture
Throughout the years, types of media have gradually changed. One of the most recent changes taking
place in the second half of the twentieth century. In his book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, Neil
Postman talks about the change from the age of typography to the age of visual media and how it has
greatly impacted the American culture. Postman points out several reasons to support his opinion that
the transition has indeed proven to have a negative effect on the American people.
How did, what was once almost entirely a typographical culture, become so completely a visual and
television culture? Postman begins explaining this transition by first describing what life in the 1800 s
looked like. Until the 1840 s, information could move only as fast as a human being could carry it...
America was still a composite of regions, each conversing in its own ways, addressing its own
interests. A continent wide conversation was not yet possible (64). The only information people knew
of the outside world was learned either by word of mouth or written letters delivered in person.
Because it was so difficult to obtain information, Americans generally were only concerned with what
was going on in their immediate surroundings. Even newspapers were mostly about local happenings.
The gap was closed in 1837 with the invention of Samuel Morse s telegraph. The telegraph provided a
way for Americans to connect with people who would normally be too far to communicate with.
Though many disagree,

Target Market Profile of the Cocktail Mixer
Positioning Strategy Since this is a new product entering in the market, we will be depositioning
competing cocktail mixers. The question that we will be answering is what the product differentiation
is relative to the competition. The reason that our cocktail mixer will be differentiated from all others
is that everything the person needs will be put together in one kit, including premeasured mix packets
(better than refrigerated mixes because this can be taken on the go, like a juice box) and a battery
operated operated shaker with a detailed instruction book and 1 gigabyte flash drive with hundreds of
extra mix recipes. There will be 24/7 product support as well as online support with online chat. The
product difference will be everything is available in a fool proof kit. Basically, anyone can make Las
Vegas style drinks like a professional bartender. To keep prices down, a call center will be located in
Israel in the Jerusalem are where there a large population of Anglos who speak American English
without an accent. While not as cheap as Indian customer service support, but the costs are cheaper
than the U.S. and there are no accent or cultural problems. Indeed, there are a number of the

Family History Of Dna Genetic Testing
DNA is the genetic code that exists in all living organisms. Usually, DNA is replicated with the same
genetic information. However, there are some mistakes which occur during the DNA replication,
which will result in some complications and abnormalities in genes leading to genetic diseases.128 So
the identification of genetic mutations is an important component in the early diagnosis of many types
of diseases and undesirable behaviors. Genetic testing is usually required for a diagnostic reason if
there are symptoms of a disease that may be caused by genetic alterations. If there is a family history
of a genetic condition, it is always wise to take the genetic testing before the symptoms show up.

Daniel Evans Adaptation Of The Play The Seagull
The Seagull
The Seagull is a Queensland Theatre Company production, written by Anton Chekhov in 1869,
adapted and directed by Daniel Evans. The play has been adapted from its original Russian setting to
fit the modern Australian context. Changes were made to the language of the script, but the characters
remained virtually the same through their plight against unhappiness. Through the manipulation of
symbol, tension, and language, Daniel Evans adaptation utilises the unique conventions of post
dramatic theatre to help realise the play s dramatic meaning. The Seagull focuses on the character s
perpetuating sense of misery while searching for fulfilment. It captures the reality that, in love and
life, you choose your own misery.

scene, Masha in her drunken state unmasks her true emotions and declares her love for Konstantin,
upon rejection she proclaims the meaninglessness of life without love and how in the end the only
result of it is misery. Her pretence of having a callous exterior was to masks the underling pain that
she is unable to deal with. Dim lighting accentuated the foreboding mood of misery and her off centre
positioning on stage underpinned the neglect of sympathy she was receiving from other characters,
most importantly Konstantin, due to the seemingly unimportance of her character. At the pinnacle of
emotional pretence, Irina as a character constantly maintains a façade of extravagance. Upon returning
to the lake, she vociferates the perfection of her life and career, but moments later runs off stage and
sobs in despair. The use of split staging depicts Irina s battling emotions and her fear of showing
emotional sincerity least it enhances her vulnerability. Throughout the play the seagull is a recurring
motif and appears in peaks of tension in the play. In this case it reinforces the theme of the
existentialism revealing the characters denial of their misery and unwillingness to change their

Barnes Noble Goes Local

Date: February 9, 2015
To: Michael P. Huseby
From: Dana Gorder, Corporate Strategist
RE: Barnes Noble Goes Local
Why shouldn t we judge a book by its cover? As the country s leading brick and mortar bookseller,
Barnes Noble (B N) needs to transform its super store appearance and atmosphere instead of cutting
into markets with well established competition, such as ebooks and campus bookstores. Along with
the rising trend of the buy local movement, people prefer the atmosphere of a local bookstore to that
of a large retailer, and if B N wants to avoid Borders fate, we have to adopt the look and feel of a more
community connected, local store.
The Situation
Barnes Noble is in trouble. Sales in all three B N branches Nook, Retail, and College have continually
dropped since 2012 and analysts expect sales to decline another 7 percent this year (IBISWorld).
Nook
Revenue decreased more than 50 percent last year (BN.com)
Distributors like Target no longer carry the Nook due to lack of profitability (Kozlowski)
Retail
Revenue decreased 6.3 percent last year (BN.com)
BUT without taking into account Nook product failures, sales improved at the end of the year
(BN.com)
College
Revenue decreased 6 percent last year (BN.com)
Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization (EBITDA) increased this year
Although B N College appears to have a bright future, its growth is limited. First, profits increased

Usaa Case Study
Question: Is USAA a typical insurance company? List all supporting reasons.
No, USAA is not a typical insurance company:
It specifically targets current and retired military officers and their dependents for a variety of
insurance, asset management, and quality of life programs. Most insurance companies do not carry a
full package of financial products.
Their strategy was about customer service rather than profit or revenue. The growth was built on
creating new products for the existing target market.
The homogeneous, well educated, and relatively affluent target segment is easy to market to since the
core message of trust can be used across the board as the customers have a common life experience
and background.

This communication process had a rocky start. Built originally on a time expense model, partnerships
between divisions were strained due to conflicts over time and resource allocations. The company
ultimately placed the head of P C as the new leader of IS. This helped create a user orientation within
IS and established good relationships with other divisions.
The user focus not only drove consolidation efforts, it redefined how customers were thought of.
USAA began to think of customers in terms of life events, or event oriented service, matching
products with the needs of consumers at specific points in their lives. Using this information,
representatives can pinpoint additional products customers need, adding potential sales opportunities
for new lines.
Question: The fact that McDermott provided visioning and leadership for the use of IT within USAA
is clear from the case. Why is this so important?
Vision and leadership for the use of IT is very important as it drives the company ahead. McDermott
provided this for USAA using a variety of tools such as the ISD Business Plan, support groups, and
the Vision 2000 initiative.
The ISD Business plan serves as a framework to discuss basic philosophies, strategies, principles,
goals, and key result areas. It helps in assessing the current system environment as well as solidifies

Summary Of Saints By Nancy Scheper-Hughes
The typical Irish personality as seen through the ethnography of Nancy Scheper Hughes is similar
among the Irish population. The reason we see these similar traits among the Irish population is
because of the hardships that the people go through as they are raised from children to adults. Ireland
is known for their high rates of diagnosed mental illness. Through the author s fieldwork we are able
to learn about the personality traits found among the Irish. Nancy Scheper Hughes states that, the
Republic of Ireland has the highest hospitalization treatment rate for mental illness in the world
(Scheper Hughes 60). The book titled, Saints, Scholars, and Schizophrenics Mental Illness in Rural
Ireland, talks about the mental illness Schizophrenia and mentions reasons why the Irish population
has been diagnosed with so many cases. Scheper Hughes observes, Schizophrenia is the core problem
more than half of the patients are so diagnosed (Scheper Hughes 60). The reason behind these
diagnosed mental illnesses has a lot to do with the way the Irish are raised. Most of the Irish
population is raised in a similar way, which does not allow them to make decisions for themselves.
There are certain social and cultural values that Irish parents place upon their children, which may be
the reason why there are so many cases of mental illness seen throughout Ireland. One reason that may
affect these children is the pressure put on them by parents. In Irish culture at least one

The Fall, By Albert Camus
The Fall, written by Albert Camus, is a book full of many philosophical conversations and topics to
ponder. One thing that makes it so interesting is that it is written in second person, so Clamence is
addressing the reader as a character. The basic plot of The Fall is that the reader follows Clamence
around Amsterdam as they converse about life (more specifically, his life), and in doing so the reader
learns that he has been trying to find a way to live without judgement. In the end, he decides slavery is
the best answer, because if one simply skips the court and goes straight to jail, he does not face
judgement at all. This view can already tell you that although he is an intelligent man, he has many

The painting in question is a part of a larger piece called The Ghent Altarpiece, located in St. Bavo s
Cathedral. In the very beginning of the book, when the reader and Clamence are in the bar, Clamence
points out the blank space on the wall where a painting once was. He says that he was there when the
bartender put it up, as well as when he took it down. However, in the last chapter he reveals that the
reason it was taken down was because he recognized it as the stolen painting, and upon telling the
bartender he took it down out of fear of being arrested. Clamence took it home, and it had remained in
his closet since then. This, along with the other acts of hypocrisy and pompousness, show that in this

Middle Ages
There is a commonly held idea that the middle ages in Europe (476 CE 1500 CE) were a backwards
period of stagnation and scientific degeneracy, caused by the brutal suppression of science by the evil
Catholic Church, and eventually overcome due to the work of enlightened thinkers such as Galileo
and Newton. This idea of these dark ages has existed since the 14th century, and has continued to gain
popularity through the early modern era as historians used it to compare their enlightened times to the
dark and primitive ages of the past. While this narrative is not entirely without merit, the number of
manuscripts produced during this time period was significantly lower than the times proceeding it

In September of 476 CE the last Roman emperor of the west was deposed and with this, the already
failing, Western Roman Empire dissolved. As discussed in Dr.Peter Heather s analysis in Ancient
History in depth: The Fall of Rome, the effects of this were felt on nearly every level in Europe but
impeded the development of natural philosophy in three main ways. First is that Roman infrastructure,
which had previously allowed for trade and information to freely flow throughout the empire, was
suddenly no longer being maintained and defended. This left most philosophers cut off from each
other and unable to collaborate. Second is that the fall of Western Rome led to the immediate and
rapid de urbanization of Europe. This is because the loss of the strong central empire led to the region
almost immediately fragmenting into hundreds of small kingdoms. These kingdoms lacked the
professional military of Rome, and could not collect taxes or exert control over their subjects as Rome
did. With taxes no longer a major part of day to day life and unified Roman market for goods suddenly
non existent, much of the population turned to farming and spread out into more rural areas. Third is
that, with the loss of both the central Roman bureaucracy and market, literacy

Multicultural Education Issues The purpose of this study is to discuss teachers resistance to

school dropouts. There are so many teachers who often have a fear of teaching or building positive

Teachers have to examine their prior experiences and confront fears that influenced their value system
( Vang, 2005). In the article, An Ecological Perspective on Preparing Teachers for Multicultural
Classrooms (Johnson, 2003), it is stated that discussions of multicultural education generally center on
the importance of broadening students understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures. The authors
here want to make sure that the teachers and trying to deal with the curriculum issues and that the
material being used is suitable for all students regardless of their background or age. The role of the
teacher is very critical to the students getting an understanding. Teachers really do not know how
influence they have in their students. Maybe if the teachers begin to start embracing all students; we
will see more effective teaching in the multicultural classroom. There is a lot of inequality amongst
students of lower socioeconomic class. There is a drop out crisis among youths at the bottom of the
socioeconomic scale, regardless of race. This is because some students are dropping out to help
support themselves and their families. Jay Greene of the Manhattan Institute and Christopher
Swanson, of the National Governors Association states, We know that about a third of our students are

Auden, A P by John Updike, and Antigone by Sophocles has a theme that is known to be conformity and rebellious. The poem The Unknown Citizen is mainly about the unknown man who is a conformist because he listens to all the rules that are made for the society. Mamet has written several plays, including Speed the Plow, China Doll, The Shawl, and Faustus, and succeeded in a movie adaptation of his play Glengarry Glen Ross in 1992. Deming, on the other hand, had a system he established using a fourteen point formula which recognized the purpose toward improvement, leadership, and training, as well as taking actions to ensure a successful process improvement. Standards of Performance Crosby s performance standard consisted of having a zero defect approach, which meant everyone involved (supplier and customer included) must understand. Crosby defined zero defect as not being a literal zero defect (as that is not always possible), but rather producing goods or services within agreed upon tolerances and requirements for quality and costs. Juran had a four step formula when it came to performance standards: establish goals to be reached, establish plans for these goals, meet the goals, and rewards based on results achieved. Deming had a process called the Deming Wheel, which was an adaptation of the PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, and Act) Problem Solving Cycle. To break it down, Plan involved designing components to improve results, Do employed the plan, Check evaluated the measurements, and Act made decisions based on the changes needed to improve the process. Quality Measurements Juran s perspective on quality was based on five general measures, the measures being the cost of poor quality, defects, product/process features, customer needs, and customer behavior. • 6. Using Alternatives Sources Of Energy Up until a few years ago, we used to exploit fossil fuels for almost all of our needs (heating, transportation, etc.) without thinking if there are enough supplies or even about their negative effects their emissions cause to the environment. According to many scientific investigations our fossil fuel resources (oil, coal and gas) are running out, furthermore their emissions pollute the environment and contribute to the greenhouse effect. Undoubtedly, these situations as well as the fact that the demand for electricity is increasing more and more globally made us thinking about using alternatives sources of energy. Many possible fuels are being tested at the moment in order to find which one is the most suitable in terms of efficiency, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Despite the fact that things seemed to run smoothly, in 1973 when the oil crisis began, nuclear industry had to face environmental issues which made the construction of power stations such an expensive deal. Nowadays, nuclear power seem to be more promising than ever due to the increased demand of electricity. After many investigations experts have determined that there are two ways that nuclear power can be utilized. The first way is called Nuclear Fission , this way is mainly used in power stations, uranium and other heavy elements are used as fuels. By its reaction heavy cores separate into medium sized cores, where energy is released. The following figure shows how much electricity was generated in 6 countries by nuclear power in 2007. The second way that nuclear power can utilizes is called Nuclear Fusion , this way needs more investigation in order to be applied in power stations. Hydrogen and other light elements would be used as fuels and from its reaction fuse light cores are converted into medium sized cores, where energy is released. Nuclear Fusion s 2 most promising reactions are the DT reaction, which fuses deuterium (heavy isotope of hydrogen) with tritium (heavier isotope of hydrogen), making Helium (light monoatomic gas) and the DD reaction, which fuses deuterium with deuterium. For example, in a country like Uganda, only 30 percent of married women from the age of 15 to 49 use modern family planning methods (Salwa Bitar McKenzie Lamborne, 2014). Low rates of maternal health service utilisation in sub Saharan Africa have also been attributed to the unequal gender relations arising from religious beliefs, teachings and practices and cultural influences (Katherine Marshall, 2013; UNAIDS, 2014; International Community of women living with HIV/AIDS, 2004; J.K. They have never experienced what it is like to be the customer depending on someone else for technological knowledge and expertise. This works both ways; I have never been a technician and do not understand a lot of the problems and frustrations that they experience. So in turn, we share our thoughts, our experiences and our ideas on how we can make our organization a more profitable one. • 11. The Pros And Cons Of Genetic Engineering Modern technology has changed rapidly over the years, and one of the most life changing innovations is genetic engineering. Genetic engineering is the deliberate modification of characteristics of an organism by manipulating its genetic material. It is a set of biotechnologies used to change the genetic makeup of cells, including the transfer of genes, to produce improved organisms. Genetic engineering techniques have been applied to numerous fields including research, agriculture, industrial biotechnology, and medicine. Genetic engineering can be used for many manipulations in one s genes. Particularly, it may be used for changing the sequence of genes so that if a person s DNA has a gene for a certain disease it may be removed and prevented through genetic engineering. Another use may be the manipulation of genes by inserting into a child favorable traits, which are picked out by the parent before the kid is born, through genetic engineering. Therefore, Genetic engineering should be limited to altering genes that cause diseases. It should not be used to alter genes to make the perfect baby. It should not be used to give favorable traits to a baby because this is immoral, and affects biodiversity by limiting genetic diversity, over a period of time. And most significantly the repercussions of genetic engineering are still unknown. Leon Kass poses the question, What standards will guide the genetic engineers? (Kass, paragraph 32). This is a question we should be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If that trend continues, the state will enjoy an additional $40 million in tax revenue in the first year of legalization. Equally as damaging, the Loman family lacks the ability to make the necessary and suitable choices to pursue the American Dream. The first is a Brain Heart Infusion broth (BHI) that contains 50 mM of NaCl. The second is BHI containing 250 mM of NaCl. The third is BHI containing 1000 mM NaCl. In order to obtain this, a growth curve graph must be constructed for each different environment, and the generation time of the bacteria in each environment must be calculated. The # of bacterial cells at each time point was measured following the equation given in the How to generate a bacterial growth curve supplemental material posted on D2L. (2) The data was then recorded in the table listed above. A growth curve graph was constructed using the data above which illustrated the differences between each of the different BHI mixtures. The graph was then used to determine the generation time of V.natriegens for each different environmental condition. In order to calculate the generation time (g) the mean growth rate (k) must be calculated. The formula to do this is posted in the supplemental material How to generate a bacterial growth curve on D2L. In his book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, Neil Postman talks about the change from the age of typography to the age of visual media and how it has greatly impacted the American culture. Postman points out several reasons to support his opinion that the transition has indeed proven to have a negative effect on the American people. How did, what was once almost entirely a typographical culture, become so completely a visual and television culture? Postman begins explaining this transition by first describing what life in the 1800 s looked like. Until the 1840 s, information could move only as fast as a human being could carry it... America was still a composite of regions, each conversing in its own ways, addressing its own interests. A continent wide conversation was not yet possible (64). The only information people knew of the outside world was learned either by word of mouth or written letters delivered in person. Because it was so difficult to obtain information, Americans generally were only concerned with what was going on in their immediate surroundings. Even newspapers were mostly about local happenings. The gap was closed in 1837 with the invention of Samuel Morse s telegraph. The telegraph provided a way for Americans to connect with people who would normally be too far to communicate with. First is that Roman infrastructure, which had previously allowed for trade and information to freely flow throughout the empire, was suddenly no longer being maintained and defended.
