Generation Gap? Political and Economic Sentiment Across Three GenerationsRommell Montenegro
Millennials, born between 1980 and 2004, are now the largest and most diverse segment of the U.S. population. Not surprisingly, there has been a surge of recent research attempting to understand how this generation thinks, works and shops. One area that has received relatively little attention is differences in political and economic sentiment across the three largest generation groups.
Are Millennials more optimistic about the economy? Who cares the most about immigration policy? Which age group is the best target for messages about healthcare? As the US recovers from a recession and looks towards the next presidential election, it becomes critical to understand these market trends.
Impact of Migration on Transformation to Sustainability Poverty and Developme...Parvez641710
This book is the third volume based on a complete panel survey of three waves starting in 2014, and completed in 2021.
In the first wave of survey, we investigated gendered impact of migration on poverty and local development.
The second wave of panel data allowed us to explore the depth of poverty.
With third wave of data, we have explored contribution of migration towards transformation to sustainability.
Demographic analysis, the statistical description of human populations, is a tool used by government agencies, political parties, and manufacturers of consumer goods. Polls conducted on every topic imaginable, from age to toothpaste preference, give the government and corporations an idea of who the public is and what it needs and wants.
The Sustainable Development Goals—officially known as "Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development"—are an intergovernmental set of 17 aspirational goals and 169 targets that now apply to all countries. SDG 4 (quality education) and SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth) seek to address primary concerns of youth. Elsewhere, it stands to reason that engaging, energizing, and empowering youth can make them integral part of the solutions we all need.

Its current progress: 300 interviews with élite policy actors were conducted across the regions, including 84 in Europe/EU. This presentation is about its three preliminary findings on the meanings and drivers of migration governance and more.

Mining names in the big data to map diasporas - NamSorICMPD
Names reflect cultural Identity
NamSor data mining software recognizes the linguistic or cultural origin of names in any alphabet / language, with fine grain and high accuracy.
Personal names are meaningful : we use sociolinguistics to extract their semantics and deliver actionable intelligence.
The technology can be and is used for identifying and mapping diasporas.

Government policies on immigration levels*
In your view, should immigration in this country be kept at its
present level, increased, or decreased?
Present level Increased Decreased (Don't know/Refused to answer)
*UN World Population Policies database, 2011 Source: IOM-Gallup (2015) How the World Views Migration
24. Key take-aways
1. Opinions about migration around the world are not as negative as often portrayed
2. Lack of opinion for many people around the world Potential to shape it
3. The economy is important but does not explain the full story Cultural and social
dimensions
4. Contact between migrants and non-migrants matters Potentially important role
for diasporas
25. Challenges of research on public attitudes towards
migration
Limitations of public opinion polls
Wording of questions and answer options may affect results
Superficiality (limited answers, no nuances of opinions)
Selection of answer options based on assumptions on what is relevant
Definitions rarely provided – who do people think of when they think of immigrants?
Lack of time to form an opinion
Interpretation of results problematic: assumptions
1. People have an opinion
2. Public opinion results from aggregation of individual opinions
Translation issues (international surveys)
Volatility of personal opinions (timing of survey) importance of contextual factors
26. Gap: public opinion about emigrants/returnees
• People‘s opinions about emigrants may have an impact on effectiveness of diaspora initiatives in
countries of origin
• Limited empirical research on public opinion about emigration (IOM‘s World Migration Report 2011)
- Ambivalence towards emigrants: from home country abandonment to “national heroes”
• Return migration: largely understudied
- Attitudes towards returnees affect returning migrants and their decisions
- Ambivalence towards return migrants: from role-model status to “failure”
27. Final remarks
• Strong interplay between public opinion, migration policies and the media
Role of governments
Role of academia/policy analysts
Need for more research on public opinion
• Migrants too often viewed as passive agents in the migration debate
Enabling migrant voices to be heard
IOM’s “I am a migrant” campaign (‘Je suis migrant’, ‘Soy migrante’)
• Personal experience often trumps stereotypes
• How can diasporas contribute in these areas?
28. Discussion
• Any existing diaspora initiatives to promote a more positive image of migrants?
• Any initiatives by media outlets/the private sector to give voice to migrants?
• Any initiatives from governments/IOs/CSOs to promote a more balanced migration
debate?
• Any new research that colleagues in academia wish to flag?
