The landscape of internet-ready devices is quickly growing, allowing people to access content from pocketable devices and big screen TVs alike. But designing usable interfaces for big and small is a challenge, especially when those devices are being used to compliment each other. Hear firsthand from two seasoned designers about the pitfalls and best practices of designing for these unique experiences and the Second Screen. They’ll talk about handling different methods of input and finding room for varying amounts of output, designing within existing UI constraints, and much more.

This presentation was so well received by our automotive, web and mobile industry audience, that it had to be shared.
Location based Services have entered the mainstream. Personal Navigation Devices in cars are ubiquitous and personal navigation on the phone is already a big business. Nokia alone is going to have over a hundred million GPS enabled devices across the whole product range in the market by 2010, challenges like battery live and slow positioning technology have been solved to a satisfying extent.
Now Location based services are about to get social, considered by some as the holy grail of LBS. Everyone is in the starting blocks to grab a piece of the pie, innovative start-ups, the operators with millions of customer relations and the handset manufacturers who put the ultimate gateway in our hands. And why are the big ones like Facebook missing the train so far? What is the ecosystem going to look like and how do we overcome major obstacles including privacy, signal vs. noise and user experience on the fourth screen?
Felix Petersen is giving his perspective on things, both as co-founder of one of the pioneering startups in this space and as an employee of the dominating handset manufacturer aggressively pushing towards a vertically integrated end user experience.
Digital technology is changing the way we live our lives in areas such as banking, entertainment, education and tourism. This technology also has the capacity to transform civic society – including democratic participation, citizen journalism and supporting local communities. National and Local Governments around the world are opening up the data that they hold for reuse by others. The reuse of Open Government Data facilitates transparency, participation, collaboration and economic development.
The aim of Code for Ireland is to bring together people from local communities, software developers and people working in government in order to develop apps and services that solve community problems and also to enable open government. Is it rude to intrude on conversations? (Frank Lloyd Wright mention in another state – we have Frank, too!) Still-developing etiquette. Examples of uses ** Butter cow discussions ** State Fair smackdowns with other State Fairs on Twitter and people rooting for their state’s Fair. ** TBEX Road Trip and Pam Mandel -- came through Iowa & they gave suggestions for stops in the state (couldn’t tweetup unfortunately.) Fun for Jessica AND TBEX-ers, 3 bloggers all talking to their audiences about Iowa.
Had to get approval for FB page appearance Spent more time on Twitter on FB, although started on FB a bit sooner – revamp caused them to have to figure out how best to use it – now they’re seeing interaction and it’s picking up because it goes into people’s Home Page feeds. 600+ fans. Just her for tourism FB & Twitter – tries to check in morning, but when she’s gone, so nothing happens. Would be great to spend more, but budget cuts prevent that. Constant changes tough to keep with
FB page in big box – over 1000 fans (Hutch is beating us!) Twitter – 1300+ Blogs on city Web site – Parks and Rec, Library. Unusual in that they started with blogs.
