- Over 40 years of research in augmented reality (AR) has been conducted, starting with Ivan Sutherland's head-mounted three-dimensional display in 1968. - More recently, mobile AR research at Columbia University from 1996-2001 developed systems for campus tours, historical hypermedia, and restaurant guides. - Current issues with mobile AR include inaccurate tracking from GPS and sensors, small display field of views, and handheld form factors. Improved sensors and eyewear interfaces may help address these issues.

Slides for "Augmented Reality’s First Educational Applications" videoconference session, http://www.nitle.org/events/event.php?id=70 "What is augmented reality (AR), and how can it be used on the liberal arts campus? In this session, this recently evolving technology for layering digital content over the physical world will be explained, and a variety of examples and platforms, from the iPhone to Android, will be shared. Participants will be guided through a survey of possible liberal arts uses, ranging from campus information to urban studies to new media. This interactive discussion is the third in this spring’s “Special Topics in Emerging Technologies” series. The series will focus on three technologies identified in The Horizon Report (2010 edition) as likely to be adopted in the next one to three years. Bryan Alexander, NITLE’s director of research, chaired the advisory board for this year’s Horizon Report, which is published annually by the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI). This year’s report describes six areas of emerging technology that will have significant impact on higher education in the next five years. "

This emerging technology superimposes layers of computer-generated content such as 3d images, photos, and data over what you are looking at in real-time. This session will explain augmented reality and highlight potential uses and real world examples of how libraries are using this technology to promote, market, outreach, teach, and engage with users in new and exciting ways.

Digital objects used by tourists such as mobile phones and cameras leave a large amount of traces. The phone can indeed be geolocated through cell-phone antennas or GPS and digital cameras take pictures that people can upload on web sharing platforms such as Flickr. All of this enable new application that allow to count tourists or provide them with new sorts of services. Based on existing experiments, the presentation will describe how the tourism industry can benefit from these digital traces to obtain new representations of tourists activities and to build up new services based on them
