Social media is changing our world in fundamental ways by allowing information to spread from the bottom up, empowering digital natives, and reaching everyone. It is shifting dynamics in media, advertising, marketing, product development, business, politics, and education. Crowdsourcing is also expanding beyond just sharing information to crowdsourcing everything through platforms like Wikipedia, Groupon, and crowd investing. Additionally, social media allows for increased tribalization and uniqueness over mass culture as people can now find and connect with smaller, more customized communities. While this change is inevitable, social media must be thoughtfully integrated from the start of any plan rather than as an afterthought to achieve its full benefits.
