YouTube was used extensively during the planning, research, and evaluation stages to view example videos in the genre, analyze song lyrics, and receive feedback on rough cuts of the video. Blogger was used to document progress throughout the project and receive feedback from peers. Slideshare and Prezi were utilized during planning and research to visually present development of storylines and plans. Photoshop was employed during construction to edit photographs and ancillary tasks. A Canon camera and tripod were the equipment used during shooting to capture steady shots for the music video and ancillary tasks.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

How did you use media technologies in the planning and research, construction and evaluation stages?
1. How did you use media
technologies in the
planning and research,
construction and
evaluation stages?
2. YouTube
For my the planning and research, I mainly used YouTube as this platform allowed me to
view and research a vast array of videos which influenced my choices whilst making my final
product. In addition to this, we also watched music video's from the same artist and thought
of what we would like to replicate during the video and the aspects which we thought were
too complex or irrelevant to leave out of the production. Watching video's from the same
genre on this platform helped us greatly in the production of our video as it helped with the
production and the creation of ideas during the creative process. In addition to this,
listening to the song in question on YouTube and analysing the lyrics whilst producing idea's
was a really good way of reflecting on our own visions and views on the video and helped us
with our final version.
Furthermore, we shot a rough copy and sent that to YouTube, in order to receive feedback.
And we would eventually release the final version of the video onto YouTube.
3. Blogger
Using Blogger to track our progress during each stage of the project didn't
only show evidence of actual work being done, it also helped us reflecting
back on our production and helping us see where we needed to research
further or add more to certain aspects of the course. Having blog posts also
allowed us to show our development publicly and it was open to criticism
from peers and teachers, our peers - who were also our audience - helped
with the production greatly via media platforms such as Facebook Messenger
as it allowed our friends and colleagues to give us feedback on our work and
could allow us to improve. This could also allow us to add a questionnaire for
our audience to give us more information on what their interests were,
adding to our overall research on our target audience. At the end of it all,
Blogger was mainly used as a journal for our creative process.
4. Slideshare and Prezi
Slideshare allowed us to show our presentations online for public viewing and
showing our presentation in a different medium rather than a simple blog post
gave my blog some credibility. Furthermore, the visual representation could
show off my skills at Powerpoint and it is easier to view. I mainly used
Slideshare for my planning and research as it was easier to show development
in our story-line and creation of a narrative and the overall plan of the music
video. Similarly, Prezi was used much like Slideshare however it is more
interactive and the production of it was more complex, and could hold up to
more information and detailed analysis on things such as music video's but
still be aesthetically pleasing.
5. Photoshop
We used Photoshop during the construction to edit our ancillary tasks as it had
to look professional. For example, editing photographs to a better quality for
our end products. We have used this tool before in previous projects and it
was easier to use and to navigate the software as we were familiar with it.
We mainly used it in our ancillary task however, it came in handy during the
production of our music video as the tools on the software are very similar
whilst editing. Constructing all three products using these tools helped us
achieve a great level of professional work.
6. Camera equipment
The camera equipment we used during our construction was a Canon camera,
as well as a tripod which could hod the camera still and level whilst we
wanted to do a smooth, long uninterrupted shot or just simply to keep the
camera still. In addition to this, we used some steady cam equipment for
when we did not want the camera to shake. The quality of the camera was
good and it transitioned well onto the Adobe After Effects Software which we
used to create our music video. We used the same camera for the shooting of
the ancillary tasks - both the advertisement and the digipak.
