The first of the two stories I chose to compare and contrast is titled "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson and the second story is titled "The Rocking–Horse
Winner" by D.H. Lawrence. I will compare each of their themes, characters, and plot developments in which they are both similar and different. One of
the strongest comparison would be that both stories deal with the subject of luck in one sense or another. The Lottery being considered a game of

Looking at both stories, the Lottery appears to be a means of how the town remain at a low population and that the Lottery was a way of controlling
that population. The Rocking–Horse Winner on the other hand uses gambling as an alternative to making money and that money is earned by being
lucky and that you had to have an imagination in order to possess this luck. The Lottery focused its story around an ancient black wooden box that held

There was gossip all over Sparta that Queen Helen had been captured. They said she had been captured by the Trojan prince Paris. The rumors were
true, Queen Helen had been captured by Prince Paris. I only knew this because King Menelaus was upset by the capture of his wife and persuaded his
brother King Agamemnon of Mycenae to lead an expedition to retrieve her. I am one of the soldiers he sent. Being a soldier is excellent for me, I can
kill openly and no one will question it.

Much of what we know about the Trojan War has come from the Greek poet Homer. Homer's poem The Iliad, made many people curious about
whether the Trojan War really happened and which pieces of his story are true.
According to Homer, the Trojan War began as a result of a kidnapping. Prince Paris, the son of the King Priam who ruled over Troy, was sent to Sparta
as an ambassador of peace. The king of Sparta, Menelaus, had a beautiful wife, Helen. Prince Paris fell madly in love with Helen–some say the gods
made him fall in love with Helen because of a decision he made earlier in his life (ask Mr. Moore to tell you about it)–so he kidnapped Helen and took
her back to Troy. Naturally, Helen's husband, Menelaus, was not very happy about the abduction of his beautiful wife. In fact, he went to the king of
all of Mycenae, Agamemnon (Who happened to be his big brother), and asked that he assemble all of the warriors of Greece to go after Paris in order
to get his wife back. Agamemnon was looking for a fight with Troy (Troy had great riches Agamemnon wanted to take for his own). So, he assembled
all of the greatest warriors of Greece, including Achilles, and launched 1000 ships from the shores of Greece in pursuit of Paris and Helen. This is
why it is said that Helen was so beautiful that she had "a face that could launch a thousand ships".

The Hidden Truth in "The Rocking–Horse Winner" by D. H. Lawrence
The plot in "The Rocking–Horse Winner" by D. H. Lawrence reveals to the reader conflicts between Paul and his mother using different levels or
forms of secrecy. There are secrets hidden throughout the house that leads Paul and his mother to an unpleasant life. The first level ofsecrecy is the
actual secrets that Paul and Paul's mother keep from each other. The second form of secrecy is that D. H. Lawrence uses a story telling style of writing.
This way of writing in itself holds many secrets. Finally, the third level of secrecy is through the use of symbolism.

Paul also hears the cry, "there must be more money" echoing through the house's walls (Lawrence 525). "Paul . . . takes upon himself the intolerable
burden of attempting to solve mother's 'problem' . . . the lack of money" (Jinkins 88). He takes this challenge hoping to receive his mother's love in
return. Instead Paul rides himself to his death because he is unable to meet his "devouring" mother's needs (Jinkins 89).
D. H. Lawrence also shows conflict between Paul and his mother through a second level of secrecy. He writes the story using the style of story telling
or a fantasy style of writing. "The Rocking–Horse Winner" starts off with "there was a woman who was beautiful, who started with all the advantages,
yet she had no luck. She married for love, and the love turned to dust" (Lawrence 524). According to Junkins "mother is the poor, unsatisfied fairy
princess who yearns for happiness; Paul is the gallant knight on horseback who rides to her rescue" (88). Lawrence uses this form of story telling to
show the reader the conflict Paul has when trying to win his mother's love by giving her riches.
Lawrence uses a third type of secrecy that deals with symbolism. There is a short passage where Paul's mother comes to a realization of what Paul
has been doing with his rocking horse. This passage starts off by mother "switch[ing] on the light . . . [S]uddenly [it] lit him up . . .

citizen Heinrich Schliemann excavated a site in Turkey. Schliemann surprised many by discovering the lost city of Troy. Although Schliemann did
