Laimer V. Latimer Case Summary
FACTS:
In 1994 Mr. Latimer was found guilty of second degree murder of his daughter Tracy Latimer, a
12 year old girl who had a severe form of cerebral palsy. On a leave to appeal from the Superior
Court of Canada (SCC), Mr. Latimer s imposition of mandatory minimum sentence for second
degree murder constitutes cruel and unusual punishment in this case, so the accused should receive
a constitutional exemption from minimum sentences under the Canadian Charter of Rights and
Freedoms. During the second trial, the defence counsel asked the trial judge for a ruling, in advance
of his closing submissions, on whether the jury could consider a defence of necessity. Whether the
jury should have been allowed to consider a defence of necessity. The trial judge told counsel that
he would rule on necessity after the closing submissions, and later ruled that the defence was not
available. Whether the timing of trial judge s ruling as to the availability of the defence rendered
accused s trial unfair.
THE ISSUES:
1)Was Mr. Latimer justified through the defence of necessity?

Leon Festinger s Social Comparison Theory
Social comparison theory was proposed by Leon Festinger his theory said that people have a
desire to compare themselves to others and from the comparison they make many judgements
about themselves. He said there are two types of social comparison one of which is upward this
is when we compare ourselves with people we believe are better than us and downward is when
we compare ourselves to people that are worse off to make us feel good. This links to Laura

feel self conscious also the unrealistic images shown in the media of celebrities can affect people

Colonialism In After Amnesia
After Amnesia, Of Many Heroes A dominated culture learns not just to be like the culture that
dominates it, but also tries to cover its own surroundings. In such cultural encounters, amnesia plays
the most important role in defining the self perception of cultures. G. N. Devy s After Amnesia,
first published in 1992, offers an keen study of contemporary literary scholarship in Indian
languages by indicating how modern Indian languages learnt to forget that literary criticism had
been discarded by them during the post Sanskrit medieval centuries, and how they have posed
before themselves a false choice of scholar practices fixed in culturally distant Western or Sanskrit
traditions. After Amnesia proposes that what has come... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Symbolically, he suffers from colonialism and also the sins of progress. The violence of these
events commands the need for a Freud or an Adorno. Yet one mourns the absence of a reliable
local reading of colonialism. India lacks a Fanon or an Edward Said, someone who can split
apart the supposed in authenticity of the wrongly classical and yet question the hypocrisy of the
contemporary. We can, obviously, present an Ashish Nandy and celebrate his models of
colonialism in terms of the sexuality of male and female and also adduce Gandhi as an answer.
Gandhi fits the challenge to hegemony from such a structure. Later, Nandy created the opposition
between myth and history arguing that symptoms of history are often a precursor of cruelty in
our humanity. One thinks of the destruction of the Babri Mosque or the violent rhetoric of
Narendra Modi in this context. Nandy, while playful, is often incomplete, a more happy go lucky

them. At another level, for all their agility, Nandy s essays still appear like a Freudian salad served

Environmental Policies of Liberia:
Perspectives from a Socioeconomic Investigation
Liberia, commonly known for diseases such as Ebola and cholera and also known as home to
such notorious figures as Joshua Milton Blahyi, a mass murderer and cannibal, is a nation
recovering from two recent civil wars on the northwest shore of Africa. The total landmass,
consisting of 111,369 square kilometers; is roughly the size of the state of Virginia. In addition to
having a long stretch of coastline along the North Atlantic Ocean, about 13% of the landmass is
aquatic. With this in mind, the population density based on June estimates is 4,092,310, per square
kilometer of usable landmass, which equates to about 43 persons per square kilometer of usable ...

Liberia s Current Environmental Policy
In 2003, Civil war plagued Liberia formed The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA s
mission statement is as follows:
The Environmental Protection Agency of the Republic of Liberia is the principle authority for
implementing the national environmental policy and sustainable management law for the
protection of natural resources in Liberia. As a commitment to the environment, the Government of
Liberia established the EPA in 2003 under the EPA Act.The Agency became a fully functioning
entity in 2006 with a board of directors and Policy Council. As the lead government environment
protection Agency, the EPA has been charged with the executive authority over all environmental
activities and programmes relating to environmental management in Liberia (The National
Environmental 2003).
The agency is empowered with a list of 25 functions; none of which seem to be implemented.
Furthermore; it would seem that the agency is currently of little to no use for reasons that will be
addressed later. These reasons are despite the fact that the organization has clearly stated its ultimate
purpose as such:
It is the continuing responsibility of NECOLIB to use all practicable means possible, consistent
with other essential components of national policy, to improve and coordinate government s plans,

Psychological Case Review And Discussion
Psychological Case Review and Discussion Terry Bailey Kaplan University Psychological Case
Review and Discussion The purpose of this paper is to review and discuss a hypothetical case
study on Mary who received an evaluation in a Community Health Center due heroin use. This
writer will discuss biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors that influence Mary s
treatment options. This writer will discuss appropriate diagnosis and treatment options, as well
as transference or countertransference issues that may impact the case. Finally, there will be
discussion of the ethical and legal implications of the case. As a counselor working in a
Community Health Center you will encounter clients from all walks of life. Some of your
clients will be socioeconomically disadvantaged, some will be tall or short; black, white, Asian,
or Australian. Some will be extraordinarily wealthy and some will be missing limbs. What they
all will have in common is that they are all people who come from different walks of life and
have a substance abuse problem or mental health condition. As a counselor you will need to
diagnose and develop the most affirmative treatment plan possible for that client. To effectively
diagnose a client and create an affirmative treatment plan, the counselor must first examine the
client as a whole. Examination of Mary as a Whole In reviewing Mary s case, we find she has
various biological, psychological, social, and cultural factors that

The Impact Of Spanish Rule On Puerto Ricans Today
The Impact of Spanish Rule on Puerto Ricans Today
What was Puerto Rico like under Spanish rule, and how important is that rule to the formation of
the Puerto Rican people today? To answer these questions, we must take a look at the history of the
Spanish and their colonization of the island of Puerto Rico.
As we know, Puerto Rico was a colony of Spain found by Christopher Columbus on November
19, 1493, and remained a colony of Spain for the next 400 years. But the interesting fact remains
that Puerto Rico was not truly settled by the Spaniards until almost fifteen years later! In 1508,
Juan Ponce de Leon came to settle the land of Borinken, and founded the town of Caparra. This
was the start of a proud people that would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The few surviving Tainos took off to the mountains for survival. The first two important elements of
whom and what makes up Puerto Rican people, is here. The Taino Indians are 1/3 of the element.
The second element, were the Spaniards.
The Spanish now were the main people of the island, but there was only one problem now. There
was no more gold to be found (which was the original reason most of the Spaniards came), and
Puerto Rico had to be productive to Spain in some fashion.
Facing the fact that there was no more gold, the Spaniards looked to the rich land and soil for
the next way that Puerto Rico could help the Kingdom of Spain. They raised cattle, and they
planted staple crops, but sugarcane was the bread and butter so to speak. The only problem was
that they could only trade with Spain for a long time and Spain grew their own sugarcane, too.
But let s not jump ahead of ourselves here. What was needed was a labor force to work these
fields, and the Taino Indians were living in the Hinterlands. There was no way they were going to
work those fields.
This brings us to the third main element that makes up the Puerto Rican people. This third main
element, were the African slaves that were brought in. In fact, the three main elements were all
together on the island of Puerto Rico in a relatively short time span. The proof of this is

The Executive Branch
The years from the founding of our country to the civil war were tumultuous times. Precedents
were set, the power of the various branches of government was constantly called into question,
and issues like slavery and sovereignty split the country into factions. As the will of the people
changed, new political parties were formed to accommodate this; while irrelivant parties would
fade from public consciousness. At the time we reveled at our own ability to change power so
peacefully with every presidential election. Each new candidate represented different mindsets and
had completely different goals but amazingly the system we had so painstakingly designed to allow
power to shift in the government bloodlessly, was working. The same principles... Show more

The first president to really push the limits of presidential power was Andrew Jackson. He was
the first Democrat to be elected president. His first controversial move was his refusal to renew
the bank charter. This essentially killed the National bank, a veto power that no one had ever
thought or intended the president would have. Jackson then took all the money and put it into
state banks. So all at once he expanded national power and affirmed the power of the states to
regulate currency. He also managed to cause an economic crisis while he was at it. Next Jackson
ignored the supreme court decision that Georgia had no claim to the Native American lands
within it. This decision was in line with the desires of the people of Georgia, but it ignored the
power of the supreme court. Finally when South Carolina began refusing to pay the high Tariffs
on goods Jackson passed the force bill so he could send troops into the state to collects the tariffs.
This law not only affirmed the power of the executive branch but also the power of the federal
government over the states. With this bill he explicitly denied that nullification was a right of the
states. However with South Carolina threatening to secede Henry Clay stepped in with a
compromise to keep South Carolina in the union. All of Jackson s actions earned him the moniker
King Andrew the First as seen in a political cartoon showing him dressed in traditional clothing of a
monarch. These fears of oligarchical rule had been deeply prevalent in America since our separation
from England. They were present years before Jackson was elected when the Constitution was
being written, and they were still deeply ingrained in people s minds decades later. These lingering
Anti monarchy sentiments almost certainly contributed to the reluctance of the people

Biological Response To Swimming
Swimming is an activity that demands much physical and mental attention from the partaker.
Every time I go to Hearst Memorial Gym to swim laps, a flurry of activity occurs within my
physical existence. A schedule as full as mine, after all, is stressful and exhausting. Once I enter
the pool, though, most of my academic and social anxieties evaporate. While I may feel relaxed,
many biological responses occur in my body s muscular, nervous, and cardiovascular systems to
accommodate my act of swimming. This is not to say these are the only organ systems involved in
the act of swimming. Rather, I believe they are the most interesting in the context of biological
psychology. Upon diving into the pool, skeletal muscles in the legs, arms, and torso... Show more

These physiological changes occur in response to the physical stresses of swimming. In the
cardiovascular system, exercise increases the pH of blood as carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations
increase and oxygen (O2) concentrations decrease. This occurs because muscle cells use O2 and
release CO2 as a byproduct; during exercise, more O2 is consumed and more CO2 is released.
Chemoreceptors in the brainstem s medulla oblongata detect increases in blood pH and respond by
triggering the release of neurotransmitters such as epinephrine and norepinephrine (Christensen et
al., 1983). These neurotransmitters (and hormones) trigger the sympathetic nervous system to
elevate heart rate via increased synaptic input to the sinoatrial node. The sympathetic nervous
system also increases respiratory rate to equilibrate CO2 and O2 levels in the bloodstream, dilates
blood vessels to increase laminar blood flow, and increase sweating to release heat by evaporative
cooling (Morgan et al.,

Lovely day. We all were going to move to Japan on the island of Okinawa. I don t know why we
took a 15 day cruise to an island over 1,000 miles away. We were told to pack everything our hats,
pets, sun block, money, phones, and even leaf blowers. Day 2: For some reason we hit an under sea
volcano at full speed. and were told to stay close and raid the buffet. Next with our mouths full and
our bags packed we grabbed our pets and jumped on a lifeboat. We were first to leave and we got
further than anybody else. That night we heard a creaking noise under water. It turns out to be a
Sperm Whale then it jumped up and ate everybody else. Day 3: Then drifting with a year s supply
of food, we were told to stay positive and play DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS

vanished. We ate the pumpkins then the butternut squash and gourds. My younger brother still
didn t eat the zucchini. Day 20: We ran out of food, so we started fishing and we caught a mahi
mahi also known as a dolphin. My father was the strongest of us all so he was the person who was
fishing. Then we cut it open and there were flying fish inside its stomach. Then we feasted on fish

We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures; we are the sum of the Father s love for us
and our real capacity to become the image of his Son. Said by St. Pope John Paul II during one

II was: a bold, forgiving, selfless, and loving man. Born on May 18, 1920 in Wadowice, Poland;
John Paul II suffered a number of tragedies in the early years of his life. By the age of the twenty
he lost all of his immediate family, and he credits the death of his father as the point in his life

Pope John Paul II like any other religious authority was an opponent of war and denounced it on
any such chance he could. During the time period of his reign many wars and massacres took
place, and Pope John Paul did everything he could to prevent or shorten these wars such as
speaking to the political leaders involved, or saying words of courage and reform to the people.
Pope John Paul also played an important role in the fall of communism in his native Poland.
Through his words of prayer to the people, his pilgrimages of peace, and the establishment of
solidarity John Paul was able to end communism in Poland for good. For this His Holiness also
received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. John Paul did the same countries such as: Paraguay,
Haiti and Chile which were under dictators at the time. One of the most admirable qualities about
Pope John Paul II was his love and respect for all other religions. It was often talked about his
relations with leaders of all other religions and the religions itself. There were three things that
most people say Pope John Paul II loved the most. The first thing was the Eucharist. Many say that
once his holiness saw the Eucharist he would get derailed from whatever he was doing and go into

The Importance of Perspectives in The Odyssey and The Penelopiad Margaret Atwood writes in
her novel The Penelopiad I ve chosen to give the telling of the story to Penelope and the twelve
hanged maids...which focus on two questions that must pose themselves after any close reading of
The Odyssey: what led to the hanging of the maids, and what was Penelope really up to? The
Odyssey tells the story of the long journey of Odysseus s return home to Ithaca after fighting in
Troy for ten years, in which he overcomes the Cyclops, enthralling enchantresses, alluring Sirens,
the despondent Underworld, and dangerous monsters. When he returns home he slaughters the

Penelope wishes to change the way they are portrayed in history instead of being remembered as
deceptive traitors, she wants the Maids to be reminisced as the loyal servants that they truly were,
herself to be remembered as a more compassionate person, and Odysseus to have a slightly less
notable and more humble reputation.
Liu 2 Penelope tells the readers a version of events in which the maids were not deliberately being
rude to Telemachus and Odysseus, and would have behaved differently if they had known more,
trying to change the opinion of the maids from how they are portrayed in The Odyssey. In The
Odyssey, Homer portrays the maids as disloyal and faithless betrayers of Penelope and Odysseus.
Melantho, one of the maids, is portrayed in this way: Flushed with beauty, Melantho mocked him
shamelessly... her heart felt nothing for her mistress anguish now.
she was Eurymachus lover,
always slept with him.
She was the one who mocked her king and taunted... (Fagles 386) Even
though Penelope treats them very lovingly, the Maids feel nothing for the sorrow that Penelope
feels about Odysseus s absence, and are always sleeping with the Suitors, mocking and taunting
their king. The only reason that the maids behave rather rudely to Odysseus and Telemachus is
because they are doing as they are told, as Penelope narrates, Unfortunately I could not tell my
twelve maids who he really was, so they continued their rudeness to Telemachus, and joined the

Uncertainty avoidance The dimension Uncertainty Avoidance has to do with the way that a
society deals with the fact that the future can never be known: should we try to control the future
or just let it happen? This ambiguity brings with it anxiety and different cultures have learnt to
deal with this anxiety in different ways. The extent to which the members of a culture feel
threatened by ambiguous or unknown situations and have created beliefs and institutions that try
to avoid these is reflected in the UAI score. At 30 China has a low score on uncertainty
avoidance. Truth may be relative though in the immediate social circles there is concern for Truth
with a capital T and rules (but not necessarily laws) abound. None the less, adherence to laws and
rules may be flexible to suit the actual situation and pragmatism is a fact of life. The Chinese are
comfortable with ambiguity; the Chinese language is full of ambiguous meanings that can be
difficult for Western people to follow. Chinese are adaptable and entrepreneurial. At the time of
writing the majority (70% 80%) of Chinese businesses tend to be small to medium sized and family
owned.
Long term orientation The long term orientation dimension is closely related to the teachings of
Confucius and can be interpreted as dealing with society s search for virtue, the extent to which a
society shows a pragmatic future oriented perspective rather than a conventional historical short
term point of view. With a

Present Day Teenagers Essay
As time passes, change is inevitable; depending on the situation, change results in positive or
negative effects. In the case of present day teenagers versus teenagers in the good old days , the
changes that occurred were negative. When comparing the two generations, the differences could
not be more apparent in all aspects of the term. Society has involved in many ways such as
communication, technology, and lifestyle practices. Teenagers have been impacted the most in the
aforementioned societal changes. Teenagers have done a complete turnaround compared to old
school teenagers, and it is evident that they are drastically different in their values, work ethic, and
behaviors. When contrasting the two generations of teenagers, the most obvious change is the
sense of entitlement teenagers have developed. Majority of teens nowadays believe that parents

Old school parents made their kids go to church, made sure their education was a priority, and
made sure they have raised reliable and independent teens. Teenagers today, want to be grown in
the physical sense rather than focusing on priorities to survive this unfair world. The reason for
present day teens to be so caught up on the wrong things may be because they value the wrong
things and people. 21st century juveniles use rappers, who glorify sex, money, drugs, and designer
clothes, as role models. As a result, these teens are more concerned about how they look and other
peoples opinions rather than creating their own brand and standing out. Today s adolescents have
become more self centered, which is why they no longer value a sense of community or care to

Comparing Picasso And Van Gogh
In this essay, I will be comparing and contrasting artists Pablo Picasso and Van Gogh, considering
their intentions with their artwork. Van Gogh and Picasso two of the most famous artists out there
and still are to this day. Uncountable books have been published and dedicated to them and their
lives and careers of being true artist. Their art has changed the way people view things and the
world around them.
Vincent van Gogh was one of many artists who self taught himself, who transformed the appearance
of Post Impressionism incessantly. His main focuses were his paintings, which he mostly painted in
oil mediums. In his time, he has produced lot of paintings, most of which were of cityscapes, figure
and landscape scenery. Unlike Pablo ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The painting shows five women naked with flat figures, disintegrated planes and faces, inspired
by African masks. The compacted space the figures occupy appears to project forward in jagged
shards; a fiercely pointed slice of melon in the still life of fruit at the bottom of the composition
teeters on an impossibly upturned table top. In this painting, Picasso makes a radical departure
from traditional European painting by adaptation of Primitivism and abandonment of perspective in
goodwill of a level two dimensional picture of a plane.
On the other hand, Vincent van Gogh did not do any cubism work during his time as an artist,
however, had more of an interest in drawing. Pablo Picasso had an interest in drawing too, but
unlike his work, Vincent van Gogh s drawings are appreciated without the need for bright
colours, drawings such as his depiction of figures, light and landscape. Van Gogh drew using a
lot of different media, such as chalks, red pen and charcoal, although he often mixed mediums as
well when it came to drawing. He drew on not just paper, but a variety of paper types, and
materials. However, Van Gogh s methods of drawing are very different to Pablo Picasso s.
Pablo Picasso s way of drawing can be seen as very different and rather similar at the same time
compared to Vincent Van Gogh s method. Drawing allowed van Gogh to capture light and images
more quickly than with painting and

Charles Crick And James Watson
A potential key to the secret of life was impossible to push out of my mind (Watson 35). Without
Crick and Watson s development on the anatomy of DNA, the foundation for modern day
knowledge on genetics and inheritance would have never existed. Francis Crick and James Watson
were two scientists who discovered and deciphered the structure and different parts of DNA.
Subsequently, if they never conceived the whole idea of a human genome, the entire maintenance
of life s code would remain a mystery. Throughout the race where the men were aiming to be the
first ones to unscramble the DNA code, Crick and Francis encountered and exchanged ideas and
hypotheses with other scientists in order to produce the structure and function of the DNA... Show

The men exemplified exploration by looking into the works of Linus Pauling, a scientist who had
released his discoveries of the proteins found in DNA, during the mid 1930s. In addition, the x
rays of DNA photographed by Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin in the early 1950s
contributed in the finalized DNA structure (Cobb). From Francis and James article, Genetical
Implications of the Structure of Deoxyribonucleic Acid, it describes how genes can carry specific
chromosomes onto later generations. They supported their hypothesis by including the information
gathered from Franklin, Wilkins, and Pauling. If it weren t for their earlier exploration of other
people s ideas, these two men would never have been able to conduct enough experimentation in
order to actually construct a model of DNA.
Nonetheless, Crick and Watson did not simply go online and search up other s information. These
men had to encounter people and exchange ideas with them. Along that line, conflicts were
encountered. By the end of January of 1953, Watson went to King s college to meet with Wilkins
in order to obtain x rays taken of DNA. This picture that was shown to Watson is known as the
famous Photograph 51, which when Watson saw it my mouth fell open and my pulse began to

Paradise Lost, an artistic epic poem, written by John Milton was first published in the year of 1667
with only ten books in the edition. The poem takes place before the beginning of time and in four
locations: Hell, Chaos and Night, Heaven, Paradise (Earth) The Garden of Eden. The epic begins
directly after the creation of the universe and after Satan, one of the main characters, was
unsuccessful at rebelling against God. Once Satan failed he was damned to Hell, which then fueled
him to harm God s cherished creation, humankind with the help of other rebellious angels.
Although, Satan was the one who volunteered and persuaded the council to have him carry out the

Reflection On Organizational Behavior
Organizational behavior is a very important topic that only a few students take advantage of.
There is nothing more powerful to have in the workforce than an understanding of the way the
people around you think and act. Having the ability to engage in the work that is being done with
coworkers and supervisors makes the work easier and more enjoyable. Workers can be most
productive when they have strong relationships to the people around them. This is why
management and organizational behavior is one of the most rewarding classes for an
undergraduate. Taking the StrengthsFinder test opened my eyes about my strengths as a leader. I
was shocked I got futuristic, however, I was not surprised to see strategic, empathy, relator, or
includer. I tend to like to live my life in the present; I try and savor and really live through the
moments happening in front of me. However, I do tend to dote on the futureand how terrified I am
of it. The assessment says futuristic leaders are inspired by the future, but it truly terrifies me. I
hope to look into this strength further in this course and discover how I can use the future to
propel me, and those around me, forward. The other strengths I received are very encouraging,
as all will likely give me an edge on any professional team. I have always had a very analytical
and strategic mind, and this strength will be an asset to any company when it comes to problem
solving or strengthening the company. In regards to forming professional relationships, I have
never really had an issue. I have always welcomed in new people and invited those I felt might
have been left out to be my friend too. Being a relator and an includer in a professional setting
will give me the opportunity to develop powerful and meaningful bonds with coworkers and
supervisors. Keeping these relationships will be easy for me as I am a keen observer of the
human condition and I know when others are feeling sad or down. I am always empathetic, and I
do my best to help whoever it may be back to their feet. In a professional setting, empathy can
help me see myself in a coworkers shoes and this could resolve disputes or even help them when
they are in times of need. All of my strengths deal with the central

Interest Rate And Interest Rates
1.1 Background of the Study Interest rate is the amount of interest due per period, as a proportion
of the amount lent, deposited or borrowed (called the principal sum). The total interest on an
amount lent or borrowed depends on the principal sum, the interest rate, the compounding
frequency, and the length of time over which it is lent, deposited or borrowed (Wikipedia). Interest
rate as policy instrument can be used to foster meaningful macroeconomic stability, the rate of
interest exacts its influence on the macro economy by transmitting through savings, investment,
output, employment, money supply and balance of payment. As a return on investment in financial

The country s agricultural products is divided into two main groups: food crops and cash crops
produced for home consumption and exports. The special interest of Government in the
Agricultural sector is due to its relevance in the provision of raw materials for industries and most
importantly the provision of food for the teaming population of Nigeria. (Akiri and Adofu 2007).
Basically, agriculture provides 65% employment opportunities for the population to reduce poverty
and contributes to the growth of the economy (Okoro, 2011). The development of agriculture in
Nigeria has been slow despite the various agricultural policies. In fact, the government recognized
the unhealthy condition(such as lack of access to technology, lack of access to farm inputs, lack of
financial empowerment, high risk etc.) of Nigerian agricultural sector since 1970, and has

The Letter G In REGARDS Represents Gender Discrimination
The letter G in REGARDS represents gender discrimination. The law says that men and women
in the workplace should be treated equally. Unless the woman is pregnant, or close to giving
birth, or just gave birth, she should be granted some rights that men do not have. For example, if
women models are needed to model a new line for women clothing. The hiring process can be
strictly towards women for the position (Robinson, 2013, p. 29). This situation is called bona fide

such as lifting heavy boxes loading or unloading trucks a womanshould receive the same treatment

Virtuality, Nationalism And Globalization In Zhang s Hero
The film Hero by Zhang Yimou leaves people in awe as much as it confuses people. Hero leaves
viewers in wonder because of the amazing action and skill but this film confused viewers because
it s hard to understand what Zhang is actually trying to express. The film is difficult to understand
because it seems as though that Zhang approves of the tyrannical rule of King Qin in order for the
warring states to come together in unification. In light of this, who is the real heroin Hero? Some
say that it is the King for bringing unity while others say that it is Broken Sword or Nameless

Essay on The Great Gig in the Sky
At a late Thursday night, I have received word that I would perform in a fancy ball room. With
only two weeks of experience I had a gig in front of a hundred people. Like many first gigs, the
stage plays tricks on you and makes you feel inferior. Stage fright had to go away at some point,
so I decided for it to be this Saturday night. Countless of hours put into this one night, I would
practice day in and day out. There was something for me to prove. You don t have to be naturally
talented and experienced to become successful or to perform at a high level. All it takes is a little
self confidence and hard work. Is two weeks enough for a musician to pick up an instrument and
perform? A sunny day in Houston, Texas. Just this morning I have... Show more content on

My heart quickly accelerated and continued to run for its life. I looked at my hands which were
beginning to moisture. The thought of performing with little experience struck me down. I was
a nervous wreck and I knew that within the next five minutes. I will give it my all or die trying. I
patiently waited to be called. A loud thumping noise is heard as I head over to the door and open
the door. It was my father. There is no need to feel nervous. You worked so hard and pushed
yourself to prove a point. Although that may be true, you worked so hard not only for success
but also for the enjoyment of performing. My dad had turned his back on me and faded away. I
stood still thinking about what he has told me. There was a better reason to why I stood up so
late and practiced so much. From the beginning, playing an instrument was a wonderful
experience. With a confident look and a brighter self esteem. I was ready to rock n roll! I
treasured the moment. I put on my shades and walked across the hall with a determined look. I
made my way backstage and was suddenly called to the stage. The spotlight was brighter than the
suns ray. I foolishly put my shades back on and take a look around me. Complete silence was
around me. Such a quiet, yet eerie atmosphere. Eyes across the stage followed me like a homing
missile. I strum a chord and begin playing. A rough start was quickly changed whenever the music
began progressing. After all, all that practice made me

Caribbean Palm Resort has been struggling for developing the right pricing strategy in order to
achieve both revenue and customer satisfaction goals. However, the approaches to date they

The resort keeps changing its price policy frequently and it confuses the customers and it is
unreliable.
Towel Hut * Too much responsibility: It is no longer a towel hut. It covers not only distributing and
collecting towels but also explaining policy, taking reservations and managing palapas and
customers complaints and so on.
Recommended Solutions and Justification * Increasing the supply: The resort could provide
more palapas so that more quests can have opportunity to enjoy it. However I assume that there
could be a limitation of installing palapas by government (such as not to damage the nature).
There is no information regarding government s permission. If so, they should offer alternatives
for customers. The alternatives could be canopies or beach umbrellas. However, these should be
provided free. * Abandoning the first come, first served system: All palapas should be rented so
that some customers who choose not to pay for palapas would not feel frustrated or slighted and
it is fairer for every customer to pay for them and no one needs to line up and waste time. *
Consistent and reliable pricing strategy: The Price system should be an hourly basis not daily. For
instance, the resort charges $8 / hour for the use of a palapa. The resort needs to optimize their
scarce resource wisely. * Allocating towel hut s responsibility: The resort should

Realism And The Remystification Of Narrative By Wendy B....
Magical realism is a form of literary expression traditionally associated with Latin American
literature and characterized by a merging of fantastical or mythical elements with realistic
fiction, so that it presents a reality in which the mundane is lent a dimension of magic and the
unusual is normalized. Even this definition of magical realism proves slippery. Whether it can
be attributed to literature as a genre or a series of stylistic choices and trademark inclusions has
been a great source of debate. Ultimately, while a strict definition of what magical realism really
is continues to be elusive, it does have a set of identifiable qualities. In her book, Ordinary
Enchantments: Magical Realism and the Remystification of Narrative, writer Wendy B. Faris
breaks down the tropes of magical realism into five parts:
First, the text contains an irreducible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These elements are what create the effect of the mythical without the story being an outright
fantasy. Many literary scholars are of the belief that magical realism rose to popularity in Latin
America as a response to postcolonialism[1]. Postcolonial literature is comprised of the literary
canon that addresses the problems and consequences of decolonization through the lens of a
colonizer/colonized experience. As former colonies, including those of Latin America, gained
independence from European powers, it became necessary for the citizens of these territories to
examine both their culture and their relation to the world.
The era of colonialism under the European empire was one of oppression and stealth. The
colonization of Latin American occurred between the 16th and 18th centuries, ending in the 19th
century as nearly all colonies gained independence between 1808 and

The Issue Of Rising College Tuition Essay
Throughout this project, I found that working through the Standard Agenda to solve a problem
was an effective way for a group to decide upon a solution. Even though our group was
unexperienced using the Standard Agenda, we were able to use each other s strengths to improve
the quality of our discussion about the issue of rising college tuition. Looking back to previous
projects, I can see how our group has grown to betterunderstand the methods of effective group
work. While there were both beneficial and impeding forces at work in the task and social
processes, I feel that overall our group had a successful problem solving discussion. I believe that
our group did a good job for the most part on following the Standard Agenda. We were able to
complete steps three through six in roughly fifty one minutes. I feel that we did some portions of
the Standard Agenda well but faltered on other sections. For example, I believe that we should have
done a better job with consciously considering solution criteria as a group. At one point in the
conversation(throughout 16:00 to 17:00), I did not know that the solution criteria had been listed
on the whiteboard because we had not clearly defined that we were discussing it as a group. I
ended up interrupting the solution generation phase because I felt the criteria needed more
attention (around 17:49), even though we had naturally explored it for a short period of time

Women s Impact On The United States
Since their inception in the 19th century, women s colleges in the United States have faced
significant challenges and undergone a multitude of transformations in their pursuit to educate
women (Kratzok, 2010; Thelin, 2004; Turpin, 2010). In recent years, economic hardship has
forced many women s colleges to reexamine their identity and initial purpose, as rising costs and
dwindling enrollments have led a majority to co educate or close their doors entirely (Hursh Wall,
2011; Kratzok, 2010). The fierce competition for students in today s higher educationclimate has hit
women s institutions particularly hard, as once there were over three hundred women s colleges
and only about seventy presently remain (Women s College Coalition, 2001). Though women make
up the majority of undergraduate students (Turpin, 2010), the future of these small, private women
s colleges seems uncertain (Langdon Giovengo, 2003). However, by examining their contentious
historical beginnings to their evolution in the 21st century, one can determine the pivotal role
women s colleges still play in the United States higher education system. The origins of higher
education in the United States can be traced all the way back to the colonial era, with the founding
of Harvard University in 1636 (Delbanco, 2012; Thelin, 2004). However, it would take another two
centuries for women to receive similar opportunities of advanced education. Excluded from
attending colleges by statute (Thelin, 2004), women in

The Dead And J. Alfred Prufrock Analysis
Many people don t usually put the words love and dead in the same sentence, because they
believe the two are as different as night and day. These same people would find it hard to believe
that the similarity between Gabriel Conroy from The Dead and J. Alfred Prufrock from the The
Love song of J. Alfred Prufrock would be so uncanny. Gabriel and J. Alfred Prufrock are both very
insecure, uncomfortable around women, and also pathetic.
In today s society many have insecurities including, and not limited to, the way they look and the
way their actions will be viewed by others. Gabriel Conroy from The Dead is insecure in more ways
than one. In The Dead Gabriel s insecurity about whether or not he should include a quotation
from Browning can be found when he thinks He would only make himself ridiculous (p.g.10 )
showing he is very insecure about what his peers will think of him for including the quotation.
Gabriel can be shown to also have insecurities about his feelings No, it was not the moment yet.
(pg. 65), showing him in the light of not being able to show or tell his feelings toward Gretta.
Insecurity not only knocked on Gabriel s door, but it also has knocked on the door of J. Alfred
Prufrock. In The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock Prufrock is being insecure about the way he
looks. This can be seen when it says How his hair is growing thin! (line 41), and But how his
arms and legs are thin! (line 44), showing Prufrock s worry of what the women in the room will
think and say about him. Both Gabriel and Prufrock are similar in that they are very insecure.
Gabriel from the dead finds himself in uncomfortable situations, most of them being when he is
around women. In The Dead Gabriel finds himself in an uncomfortable situation with Lucy
when he says, I suppose we ll be going to your wedding one of these fine days... (p.g. 8), which
Lucy replies, The men that is now is only all palaver and what they can get out of you. (p.g. 8), at
this reply Gabriel starts to feel uncomfortable. He tries to fix the situation by giving Lucy money,

better, but instead he makes it even more

Racism In Huckleberry Finn
If there is one book that almost everybody read while they were in school, it was probably
Huckleberry Finn. Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, is considered to be a masterpiece of
American Literature and one of the greatest books ever written. In recent years however, there has
been much debate over whether the book is racist or not. A big part of that debate is the repeated
use of the racial slur nigger, which many people find incredibly offensive, uncomfortable, and
racist. Because of this word, some schools have banned the book. One publishing company, New
South Books, has replaced the word nigger with the word slave to allow students and teachers to
feel more comfortable while reading it. While using the censored version of Huckleberry Finn
may make some people feel more comfortable, much of the book s meaning and message will be
lost. Censoring nigger will not teach readers the deeper meaning of it, remove the word s
historical meaning, and fail to get the main themes of the book across to the reader. In the modern
era, nigger is considered to be one of if not the worst words in the English language, due to its
connection to slavery and racism. Obviously, this word offends some students, and New South
Books suggests replacing the word with slave to prevent offending anybody. Censorship, however,
will cause more harm than simply reading the unedited version, as the reader will fail to understand
the complex meaning of the word. For example, in Huckleberry Finn,

The Fear Of Black Male Sexuality
Marquise Akbar The Fear of Black Male Sexuality in Baldwin s Going To See The Man
Schulman, Gary I. Race, Sex, and Violence: A Laboratory Test of the Sexual Threat of the Black
Male Hypothesis. American Journal of Sociology 79.5 (1974): 1260. Web. The potential for white
men to violently express attitudes of racism is studied to determine if the white male finds the
Black male sexually threatening and, if so, does this threat incite the proclivity for the white male
to act violently. Shulman studied 84 white, male, freshman and sophomore students at UC Santa
Barbara. According to the study, The subjects are young, educated, white men from stable homes
with no mental instability, whose values lean towards a liberal ideology. This experiment
considers Koval s psychoanalytic interpretation of white racism, based largely on the Oedipus
complex and Skolnick s belief that the conflict that fosters violent racism is a feeling of
powerlessness and insecurity in whites. Schulman s focus is to prove that a much larger population
is inclined to violent expressions of racism, and that this inclination is partially based on the
perceived sexual threat of the Black male. The experiment contrives a conflict requiring the
subjects to choose between cheating on a given task, which prevents the victims from being
shocked, or not cheating, thus shocking the victim The victims in the test conditions are a white

The natural disasters such as landslide, earthquake, volcano eruption, wildfire, tsunami are disasters
that happens in earth s system which is hydrosphere, atmosphere, lithosphere and biosphere (Van
Wesper, C.J., 2000). As Malaysia lies outside the Pacific Ring of Fire it is excluded from volcano
eruption and earthquakes. The most dominant disaster in Malaysia is the landslide occurs during
rainy seasons.
This disaster can disrupt the stable ecological system and cause destruction of properties and also
kill lives. This growing economic impact has drawn worldwide attention to study about the
landslide. Nowadays the developments are taking place in high altitude areas at a fast pace. As it

A Letter Of Request Letter
A letter of request,
Dear Chief Burial Master, I leave this letter wishing to inform you of my wishes for the afterlife.
I, James Doss leave you this letter regarding the actions that shall be taken to preserve my legacy
beyond this realm in the event of my death. Being a direct descendant to the bloodline of
Ramesses the Second, I expect this letter to be followed to the very letter. Due to the
unforeseeable future that could lie beyond my death, I shall inform you of his accomplishments
to prove my worth. Rameses II throughout his 66 years of rule prove to be one of the most
impressive architects of this empire. He has erected many great temples statues and cities, which
now serve as key landmarks for navigation and many flawlessly serve their purpose, as was defined
at their construction. Born to Sety I and Queen Tuya, Ramesses II showed great promise from an
early age. Upon his appointment as ruler, he began immediate reinforcement and fortification of
existing Egyptian defenses showing to the people he was a ruler that prayed for peace, but
prepared for war. On top of his great architectural prowess, my father should also be noted for his
great empathy and kindness. Exhibited many times during his reign, I wish to detail the instance in
which he sheltered his own enemy king Mursili III from the Hittite people he once commanded.
He can also be commended for his brave fighting during various military campaigns, and especially
during the battle of Qadesh in the year 1274

Successful Open Marriages In Opening Up By Alfred Kinsey
Open marriages are a form of relationship first brought into the public eye by Alfred Kinsey in the
1960s. Since then, the idea of approved extra martial affairs have become even more popular,
despite the uneducated critics hollering about it being an insult to the institution of marriage, or a
way to justify cheating on one s significant other. As open marriages start to become a more
feasible option for couples looking to explore their sexuality, a common question always seems to
come up; this inquiry, in fact, will be the purpose of the following text. To begin, I use examples
from the 2004 biographical film Kinsey, directed by Bill Condon and produced by Gail Mutrux.
While integrating discussion from Tristan Taormino and her book Opening Up: A Guide to
Sustaining Open Relationships, I introduce the concept of sociosexuality with the help of Lars
Penke s Sociosexual Orientation Inventory. In creating discussion with the above names, I aim to
demonstrate just what does make for a successful open relationship.
In the film Kinsey (Condon Mutrux, 2004), there is a clear divide between what constitutes a
successful and unsuccessful open relationship. Alfred Kinsey and his wife Clara Macmillan both
engage in extramarital affairs, yet remain close physically, emotionally, and sexually. Alternatively,
Clyde Martin (whom, it is worth noting, at one time engaged in an affair with both Kinsey and his
wife) starts a fight with another man, Paul Gebhard, after finding out Mrs.

around different areas, selling to families door to door. He is in his late 20 s and graduate in

New Issue Of New Federalism
New Federalism is known as commitment to returning powers to the state governments.
Proposed by President Ronald Reagan, who believed federal grants were just a scandal of
imposing the federal interests on the states. Reagan believed that federal government would allow
a more efficient government within the states and the nation. This reminded America of the main
point now of the 10th amendment that because the states are created under the the federal
government, it should work for the states, and not be overpowered. New Federalism is also
known as Competitive Federalism due consent struggle of the national and local government
trying to be equal. Many states liked the idea of New Federalism because new grants were given
to states with less restrictions and states and they were given a choice on how to spend these
grants. With this concept, many laws were made in order to enforce this New Federalism: the
Unfunded Mandates Reform Act of 1995 disallowed Congress from passing federal programs or
services without consulting states on how they would be funded. The Devolution Revolution in
1994, a movement led by former House Representative, Newt Gingrich, and by republicans who
desired to scale back the federal government though campaigning. Overall with this time period,
including now, we see how Ronald Reagan wanted to cease national government power through the
Supreme Court and appointed justices in the 1980s that would be dedicated to returning power to
the states. This

Much Ado About Nothing Structuralism Essay
Like Father, Like Daughter: Structuralism Amongst the Women in Shakespeare
During the Renaissance, it was common for women to behave in a certain manner in a patriarchal
society. Women were subordinate to any man in their life, whether it was a husband or a father.
However, Shakespeare creates female roles in his plays that often steer away from the common
script. These women challenge, deceive, and steal from these men, including one s closest to them
in their lives. In Merchant of Venice, young Portiaand Jessica are two examples of these strayed
female characters. They feel trapped in the hands of their father s and do their best to break free of
that hold. In Much Ado About Nothing, Hero is a young womanwho feels her relationship with ...

This shows the extreme version of a rebellious teenager in order to escape her father. Once
Shylock finds out his daughter has disappeared with his money and jewels, he is outwardly
upset with the fact that his possessions are gone. He even states that he wished his daughter
were dead at [his] foot, and the jewels in her ear! Would she were hearsed at [his] foot, and the
ducats in her coffin! (Act III, Scene i, 76 79). Surely, one can t believe there are any similarities
in this relationship, however, structuralism shows the underlying pattern between Shylock and
Jessica. Diane Dreher author of Domination and Defiance: Fathers and Daughters in
Shakespeare, points out that the two hold a common trait: Greed. Shylock s greed is expressed
through his constant talk on commerce and his precious ducats, and Jessica has inherited that
ideology. Before running away with Lorenzo, she drops down a basket filled with money and
jewels belonging to her father. One would assume it was an act of reprisal, however, Dreher
argues it is greed much like her father s. She describes her as bad and disloyal, unfilial, a thief;
frivolous, greedy, without any more conscience than a cat, (pg. 102). These two characters know
that money holds a powerful position in their lives. Along with this greed, both are very determined
characters in terms of fighting for what they want. With Shylock, he is constantly trying to receive
justice through the deal he made with Antonio. Despite the strange request, he demands that he
receives his pound of flesh from Antonio and stops at nothing to see it through. This passion can
be seen in Jessica as well when she is determined to marry Lorenzo despite her father s wishes.
She gets to the point of disguising herself as a man in order to be with him. She goes great lengths
to be with Lorenzo by eloping, but

Us Subprime Mortgage Crisis Essay
The Global Economic Environment
EMBA 683 Fall 2011
Case: U.S. Subprime Mortgage Crisis Policy Reactions
1) What are the causes behind the U.S. Subprime mortgage crisis? Is one cause more responsible
than another?
The first and more important factor that lead to the subprime mortgage crisis was governments
creation of Freddie and Fannie. This move by the government to intercede the private financial
industry sector eventually lead to the US government being the largest lender of mortgages in the
US. In addition to the flawed notion that government should determine who and how a borrow
qualifies for mortgage loan is disconcerting in and of itself, but this also marked a fundamental
change in banks models of originate and hold ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All of the innovated financial instruments mentioned above allowed individuals that would have
never been able to qualify for a mortgage in the past to enter the market. This surge of new home
buyers into the market created a spiraling effect that now leaves are market in an excess supply of
homes, and a failed mortgage system that was created and still subsidized by the tax payers as we
continue to bailout Freddie and Fannie.
2) What has the Fed done with regard to monetary policy to address the economic downturn
resulting from the subprime crisis? What is your assessment of how Ben Bernake has handled the
situation?
The Fed implemented several strategies in an attempt to stabilize the economy by first targeting the
struggling Financial Industry. The first move by Bernake was to reduce the target funds rate to 0
0.25% in an attempt to provide liquidity to the banks that needed it. Benake also increased
government spending by building up their balance sheet with the assets that were currently frozen
in the capital markets, such as mortgage backed securities. The Fed believed that by purchasing
these assets from the banks it will remove the assets from the banks but also recreate a market for
these type of financial instruments, which would ultimately help the housing industry as well. To
help illustrate Benake s monetary policy philosophy and actions are best summarized by the
following quote, people know that inflation erodes the real

The Government s Support During Domestic Disasters
The political leadership The role of the FEMA is to coordinate federal government s support
during domestic disasters. There are some politicians such as former presidential candidate Mitt
Romney who believe states and the private sector should actually have the sole responsibility of
managing emergencies in response to to natural disasters in their jurisdiction (Duffy, 2012). But
one has to question; do states have the resources to manage their own natural disasters? Hurricane
Katrina shows us individual states do not have the resources necessary to recover from large
disasters. It was not until after the federal government responded with food, water, and man power
that the states and their citizens were able to get the relief they so... Show more content on

Political connections or knowledge of elected officials in state and local government have a
direct impact on the amount of resources received or if it is even received. Garrett and Sobel
give an example where a governor submits a request to the president for disaster assistance. They
add that the president decides if a state is considered a disaster area, and that decision has a direct
impact on if the disaster relief funds are dispersed (2003). Over all, politicians want to ensure their
political capital increases. Therefore, their motivation is not only to deliver effective and superior
services during times of crisis but also capitalize on the occasion/crisis.
The business community/ Supporters and benefactors of the service
The community has a great deal of influence on the area s values, including the appropriate
methods of delivering care to survivors and living victims (Alexander 1993). Moreover, the
business community s ability to restart operation can change the perspective of the public as they
can either see the entire locality being handicapped by the incident or their ability to recover and
function effectively as a whole. Thus, when the general public experiences panic, the experience
can further be applied to economic behavior connected with the operations of businesses (Alexander
1993).

Turning Point Of The American Revolution
Overall, the American Revolution is not a massive turning point in our history socially. It did not
make any major changes to the social structure, how people were treated, and local laws. It only
really exacerbated issues that were inevitable to change, such as voting rights and african american
s rights. The only real change was the new political system. The American Revolutionwas a turning
point in our history, but not one that should be blown out of proportion as many current day people
have.
Most of the people in America before the revolution had no reason to revolt. In fact, nearly в…”
of all colonists were either neutral or against going to war with England. They had no reason to
escape England s bond. The only people who were set to gain anything from the revolution was
the elites and the wealthy of the time. In fact, most of those whom were loyal to the Revolution
either kept or gained great swathes of land, as Lord Fairfax had (84). Also, most of the wealthy
would buy in so to say by purchasing government bonds that would exponentially grow value as
the nation would grow in the future. Not only for these reasons did the wealthy prosper. They
were also promised a head at the table when forming the new nation. As Zinn points out on page
90, the rich were in a position to start writing business friendly laws that would benefit them. The
American Revolution is usually seen as a revolution of the people, but it is quite obvious that it was
simply an orchestrated coup

Political Bias In Social Media
The media has been used, over the past years, to pass on information to the general public, as well
as to educate the public about developmental issues. The agenda setting theory of mass media
postulates that media gives the people what to think about, and influences how they think about it.
One of the phenomenal issues that has been greatly affected by mediais the Susan G. Komen
Foundation and Planned Parenthood controversy.
The Susan G. Komen Foundation is one of the leading foundations in the United States, which
gives funds to organizations involved in research for a cure for breast cancer in the name of Planned
Parenthood. The foundation announced that it would stop issuing funds for Planned Parenthood,
as it was under investigation by congress. This caused a political uproar, and led to many
controversial social media debates involving high profile politicians. Although the dynamics of
the media influenced the points of view and the perception of the controversy, it is evident that
the world of technology has, in a way, trivialized the connection between people and tremendously
affected the way ideas and opinions are spread around societies. Moreover, the political bias of the
media is affecting societies to a great extent. The main purpose of inquiry into this controversy is to
show how the dynamics of the media can twist a political issue to an absolutely different angle.
HISTORY OF THE CONTROVERSY
One of the latest media driven controversies is the Susan G.

Parental Involvement Of The Bilingual School
Parental Involvement
Many challenges are facing English language learners and their parents; students have difficulties
communicating effectively, and having to do math and reading tests in English when they are not
proficient in the adoptive language. While, their parents may have limited proficiency in English
and may also have a different schooling history. Therefore, the responsibility of educating ELLs
must include parents. According to Panferov, As educators, understanding the challenges that ELL
parents may face is critical to fostering parental involvement in our ELL students school
experiences and, subsequently, supporting ELL students academic success (2010, pp. 106 112).
The paper will detail the role of parents in the bilingual school, define the advantages of parents
inclusion, and cite examples of the involvement of parents in a bilingual program. Also, how can
the bilingual program incorporate those benefits? And how will the program include parental
involvement?
Role of Parents in the Bilingual School
Parental involvement offers support to the development of a bilingual program, as such

  • 2. Laimer V. Latimer Case Summary FACTS: In 1994 Mr. Latimer was found guilty of second degree murder of his daughter Tracy Latimer, a 12 year old girl who had a severe form of cerebral palsy. On a leave to appeal from the Superior Court of Canada (SCC), Mr. Latimer s imposition of mandatory minimum sentence for second degree murder constitutes cruel and unusual punishment in this case, so the accused should receive a constitutional exemption from minimum sentences under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. During the second trial, the defence counsel asked the trial judge for a ruling, in advance of his closing submissions, on whether the jury could consider a defence of necessity. Whether the jury should have been allowed to consider a defence of necessity. The trial judge told counsel that he would rule on necessity after the closing submissions, and later ruled that the defence was not available. Whether the timing of trial judge s ruling as to the availability of the defence rendered accused s trial unfair. THE ISSUES: 1)Was Mr. Latimer justified through the defence of necessity? 2)Where Mr. Latimer s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Leon Festinger s Social Comparison Theory Social comparison theory was proposed by Leon Festinger his theory said that people have a desire to compare themselves to others and from the comparison they make many judgements about themselves. He said there are two types of social comparison one of which is upward this is when we compare ourselves with people we believe are better than us and downward is when we compare ourselves to people that are worse off to make us feel good. This links to Laura because she had a desire to lose weight because she was the only girl in the class which made her feel self conscious also the unrealistic images shown in the media of celebrities can affect people as they think that they should look like that too this may have led to Laura believing that if she lost ... Stanley Milgram carried out participants were given the role of a teacher who had to ask learner (researcher) multiple choice questions the teacher was told that if the learner got a question wrong then they would receive an electric shock (electric shocks were not actually given) every time they got a question wrong then the voltage of the shock was increased. In such cultural encounters, amnesia plays the most important role in defining the self perception of cultures. G. N. Devy s After Amnesia, first published in 1992, offers an keen study of contemporary literary scholarship in Indian languages by indicating how modern Indian languages learnt to forget that literary criticism had been discarded by them during the post Sanskrit medieval centuries, and how they have posed before themselves a false choice of scholar practices fixed in culturally distant Western or Sanskrit traditions. The violence of these events commands the need for a Freud or an Adorno. Yet one mourns the absence of a reliable local reading of colonialism. India lacks a Fanon or an Edward Said, someone who can split apart the supposed in authenticity of the wrongly classical and yet question the hypocrisy of the contemporary. We can, obviously, present an Ashish Nandy and celebrate his models of colonialism in terms of the sexuality of male and female and also adduce Gandhi as an answer. Gandhi fits the challenge to hegemony from such a structure. Later, Nandy created the opposition between myth and history arguing that symptoms of history are often a precursor of cruelty in our humanity. One thinks of the destruction of the Babri Mosque or the violent rhetoric of Narendra Modi in this context. Nandy, while playful, is often incomplete, a more happy go lucky cuckoo, laying his assumption like eggs waiting for some dull social science crow to formulate them. At another level, for all their agility, Nandy s essays still appear like a Freudian salad served up with local ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Finally, there will be discussion of the ethical and legal implications of the case. As a counselor working in a Community Health Center you will encounter clients from all walks of life. Some of your clients will be socioeconomically disadvantaged, some will be tall or short; black, white, Asian, or Australian. Some will be extraordinarily wealthy and some will be missing limbs. What they all will have in common is that they are all people who come from different walks of life and have a substance abuse problem or mental health condition. As a counselor you will need to diagnose and develop the most affirmative treatment plan possible for that client. To effectively diagnose a client and create an affirmative treatment plan, the counselor must first examine the client as a whole. • 8. The Impact Of Spanish Rule On Puerto Ricans Today The Impact of Spanish Rule on Puerto Ricans Today What was Puerto Rico like under Spanish rule, and how important is that rule to the formation of the Puerto Rican people today? To answer these questions, we must take a look at the history of the Spanish and their colonization of the island of Puerto Rico. As we know, Puerto Rico was a colony of Spain found by Christopher Columbus on November 19, 1493, and remained a colony of Spain for the next 400 years. But the interesting fact remains that Puerto Rico was not truly settled by the Spaniards until almost fifteen years later! In 1508, Juan Ponce de Leon came to settle the land of Borinken, and founded the town of Caparra. This was the start of a proud people that would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The few surviving Tainos took off to the mountains for survival. The first two important elements of whom and what makes up Puerto Rican people, is here. The Taino Indians are 1/3 of the element. The second element, were the Spaniards. The Spanish now were the main people of the island, but there was only one problem now. There was no more gold to be found (which was the original reason most of the Spaniards came), and Puerto Rico had to be productive to Spain in some fashion. Facing the fact that there was no more gold, the Spaniards looked to the rich land and soil for the next way that Puerto Rico could help the Kingdom of Spain. They raised cattle, and they planted staple crops, but sugarcane was the bread and butter so to speak. The only problem was that they could only trade with Spain for a long time and Spain grew their own sugarcane, too. But let s not jump ahead of ourselves here. What was needed was a labor force to work these fields, and the Taino Indians were living in the Hinterlands. There was no way they were going to work those fields. This brings us to the third main element that makes up the Puerto Rican people. This third main element, were the African slaves that were brought in. In fact, the three main elements were all together on the island of Puerto Rico in a relatively short time span. The proof of this is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. The Executive Branch The years from the founding of our country to the civil war were tumultuous times. Precedents were set, the power of the various branches of government was constantly called into question, and issues like slavery and sovereignty split the country into factions. As the will of the people changed, new political parties were formed to accommodate this; while irrelivant parties would fade from public consciousness. At the time we reveled at our own ability to change power so peacefully with every presidential election. Each new candidate represented different mindsets and had completely different goals but amazingly the system we had so painstakingly designed to allow power to shift in the government bloodlessly, was working. The same principles... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first president to really push the limits of presidential power was Andrew Jackson. He was the first Democrat to be elected president. His first controversial move was his refusal to renew the bank charter. This essentially killed the National bank, a veto power that no one had ever thought or intended the president would have. Jackson then took all the money and put it into state banks. So all at once he expanded national power and affirmed the power of the states to regulate currency. He also managed to cause an economic crisis while he was at it. Next Jackson ignored the supreme court decision that Georgia had no claim to the Native American lands within it. This decision was in line with the desires of the people of Georgia, but it ignored the power of the supreme court. Finally when South Carolina began refusing to pay the high Tariffs on goods Jackson passed the force bill so he could send troops into the state to collects the tariffs. This law not only affirmed the power of the executive branch but also the power of the federal government over the states. With this bill he explicitly denied that nullification was a right of the states. However with South Carolina threatening to secede Henry Clay stepped in with a compromise to keep South Carolina in the union. All of Jackson s actions earned him the moniker King Andrew the First as seen in a political cartoon showing him dressed in traditional clothing of a monarch. These fears of oligarchical rule had been deeply prevalent in America since our separation from England. They were present years before Jackson was elected when the Constitution was being written, and they were still deeply ingrained in people s minds decades later. These lingering Anti monarchy sentiments almost certainly contributed to the reluctance of the people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Every time I go to Hearst Memorial Gym to swim laps, a flurry of activity occurs within my physical existence. A schedule as full as mine, after all, is stressful and exhausting. Once I enter the pool, though, most of my academic and social anxieties evaporate. While I may feel relaxed, many biological responses occur in my body s muscular, nervous, and cardiovascular systems to accommodate my act of swimming. These physiological changes occur in response to the physical stresses of swimming. In the cardiovascular system, exercise increases the pH of blood as carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations increase and oxygen (O2) concentrations decrease. This occurs because muscle cells use O2 and release CO2 as a byproduct; during exercise, more O2 is consumed and more CO2 is released. Chemoreceptors in the brainstem s medulla oblongata detect increases in blood pH and respond by triggering the release of neurotransmitters such as epinephrine and norepinephrine (Christensen et al., 1983). These neurotransmitters (and hormones) trigger the sympathetic nervous system to elevate heart rate via increased synaptic input to the sinoatrial node. The sympathetic nervous system also increases respiratory rate to equilibrate CO2 and O2 levels in the bloodstream, dilates blood vessels to increase laminar blood flow, and increase sweating to release heat by evaporative cooling (Morgan et al., ... Uncertainty avoidance The dimension Uncertainty Avoidance has to do with the way that a society deals with the fact that the future can never be known: should we try to control the future or just let it happen? This ambiguity brings with it anxiety and different cultures have learnt to deal with this anxiety in different ways. The extent to which the members of a culture feel threatened by ambiguous or unknown situations and have created beliefs and institutions that try to avoid these is reflected in the UAI score. At 30 China has a low score on uncertainty avoidance. Truth may be relative though in the immediate social circles there is concern for Truth with a capital T and rules (but not necessarily laws) abound. Van Gogh and Picasso two of the most famous artists out there and still are to this day. Uncountable books have been published and dedicated to them and their lives and careers of being true artist. Their art has changed the way people view things and the world around them. Vincent van Gogh was one of many artists who self taught himself, who transformed the appearance of Post Impressionism incessantly. The compacted space the figures occupy appears to project forward in jagged shards; a fiercely pointed slice of melon in the still life of fruit at the bottom of the composition teeters on an impossibly upturned table top. In this painting, Picasso makes a radical departure from traditional European painting by adaptation of Primitivism and abandonment of perspective in goodwill of a level two dimensional picture of a plane. On the other hand, Vincent van Gogh did not do any cubism work during his time as an artist, however, had more of an interest in drawing. Pablo Picasso had an interest in drawing too, but unlike his work, Vincent van Gogh s drawings are appreciated without the need for bright colours, drawings such as his depiction of figures, light and landscape. Van Gogh drew using a lot of different media, such as chalks, red pen and charcoal, although he often mixed mediums as well when it came to drawing. He drew on not just paper, but a variety of paper types, and materials. However, Van Gogh s methods of drawing are very different to Pablo Picasso s. • 28. Realism And The Remystification Of Narrative By Wendy B.... Magical realism is a form of literary expression traditionally associated with Latin American literature and characterized by a merging of fantastical or mythical elements with realistic fiction, so that it presents a reality in which the mundane is lent a dimension of magic and the unusual is normalized. Even this definition of magical realism proves slippery. Whether it can be attributed to literature as a genre or a series of stylistic choices and trademark inclusions has been a great source of debate. Ultimately, while a strict definition of what magical realism really is continues to be elusive, it does have a set of identifiable qualities. In her book, Ordinary Enchantments: Magical Realism and the Remystification of Narrative, writer Wendy B. Faris breaks down the tropes of magical realism into five parts: First, the text contains an irreducible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These elements are what create the effect of the mythical without the story being an outright fantasy. Many literary scholars are of the belief that magical realism rose to popularity in Latin America as a response to postcolonialism[1]. Postcolonial literature is comprised of the literary canon that addresses the problems and consequences of decolonization through the lens of a colonizer/colonized experience. As former colonies, including those of Latin America, gained independence from European powers, it became necessary for the citizens of these territories to examine both their culture and their relation to the world. The era of colonialism under the European empire was one of oppression and stealth. The colonization of Latin American occurred between the 16th and 18th centuries, ending in the 19th century as nearly all colonies gained independence between 1808 and ... The Issue Of Rising College Tuition Essay Throughout this project, I found that working through the Standard Agenda to solve a problem was an effective way for a group to decide upon a solution. Even though our group was unexperienced using the Standard Agenda, we were able to use each other s strengths to improve the quality of our discussion about the issue of rising college tuition. Looking back to previous projects, I can see how our group has grown to betterunderstand the methods of effective group work. While there were both beneficial and impeding forces at work in the task and social processes, I feel that overall our group had a successful problem solving discussion. I believe that our group did a good job for the most part on following the Standard Agenda. We were able to complete steps three through six in roughly fifty one minutes. I feel that we did some portions of the Standard Agenda well but faltered on other sections. For example, I believe that we should have done a better job with consciously considering solution criteria as a group. At one point in the conversation(throughout 16:00 to 17:00), I did not know that the solution criteria had been listed on the whiteboard because we had not clearly defined that we were discussing it as a group. I ended up interrupting the solution generation phase because I felt the criteria needed more attention (around 17:49), even though we had naturally explored it for a short period of time (13:17 14:25). • 30. Women s Impact On The United States Since their inception in the 19th century, women s colleges in the United States have faced significant challenges and undergone a multitude of transformations in their pursuit to educate women (Kratzok, 2010; Thelin, 2004; Turpin, 2010). In recent years, economic hardship has forced many women s colleges to reexamine their identity and initial purpose, as rising costs and dwindling enrollments have led a majority to co educate or close their doors entirely (Hursh Wall, 2011; Kratzok, 2010). The fierce competition for students in today s higher educationclimate has hit women s institutions particularly hard, as once there were over three hundred women s colleges and only about seventy presently remain (Women s College Coalition, 2001). Though women make up the majority of undergraduate students (Turpin, 2010), the future of these small, private women s colleges seems uncertain (Langdon Giovengo, 2003). However, by examining their contentious historical beginnings to their evolution in the 21st century, one can determine the pivotal role women s colleges still play in the United States higher education system. The origins of higher education in the United States can be traced all the way back to the colonial era, with the founding of Harvard University in 1636 (Delbanco, 2012; Thelin, 2004). However, it would take another two centuries for women to receive similar opportunities of advanced education. Excluded from attending colleges by statute (Thelin, 2004), women in ... These same people would find it hard to believe that the similarity between Gabriel Conroy from The Dead and J. Alfred Prufrock from the The Love song of J. Alfred Prufrock would be so uncanny. Gabriel and J. Alfred Prufrock are both very insecure, uncomfortable around women, and also pathetic. In today s society many have insecurities including, and not limited to, the way they look and the way their actions will be viewed by others. Gabriel Conroy from The Dead is insecure in more ways than one. In The Dead Gabriel s insecurity about whether or not he should include a quotation from Browning can be found when he thinks He would only make himself ridiculous (p.g.10 ) showing he is very insecure about what his peers will think of him for including the quotation. Gabriel can be shown to also have insecurities about his feelings No, it was not the moment yet. (pg. 65), showing him in the light of not being able to show or tell his feelings toward Gretta. Insecurity not only knocked on Gabriel s door, but it also has knocked on the door of J. Alfred Prufrock. In The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock Prufrock is being insecure about the way he looks. This can be seen when it says How his hair is growing thin! (line 41), and But how his arms and legs are thin! (line 44), showing Prufrock s worry of what the women in the room will think and say about him. Both Gabriel and Prufrock are similar in that they are very insecure. Gabriel from the dead finds himself in uncomfortable situations, most of them being when he is around women. In The Dead Gabriel finds himself in an uncomfortable situation with Lucy when he says, I suppose we ll be going to your wedding one of these fine days... (p.g. 8), which Lucy replies, The men that is now is only all palaver and what they can get out of you. (p.g. 8), at this reply Gabriel starts to feel uncomfortable. • 32. Racism In Huckleberry Finn If there is one book that almost everybody read while they were in school, it was probably Huckleberry Finn. Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, is considered to be a masterpiece of American Literature and one of the greatest books ever written. In recent years however, there has been much debate over whether the book is racist or not. A big part of that debate is the repeated use of the racial slur nigger, which many people find incredibly offensive, uncomfortable, and racist. Because of this word, some schools have banned the book. One publishing company, New South Books, has replaced the word nigger with the word slave to allow students and teachers to feel more comfortable while reading it. While using the censored version of Huckleberry Finn may make some people feel more comfortable, much of the book s meaning and message will be lost. Censoring nigger will not teach readers the deeper meaning of it, remove the word s historical meaning, and fail to get the main themes of the book across to the reader. In the modern era, nigger is considered to be one of if not the worst words in the English language, due to its connection to slavery and racism. Obviously, this word offends some students, and New South Books suggests replacing the word with slave to prevent offending anybody. Censorship, however, will cause more harm than simply reading the unedited version, as the reader will fail to understand the complex meaning of the word. For example, in Huckleberry Finn, ... Race, Sex, and Violence: A Laboratory Test of the Sexual Threat of the Black Male Hypothesis. American Journal of Sociology 79.5 (1974): 1260. Web. The potential for white men to violently express attitudes of racism is studied to determine if the white male finds the Black male sexually threatening and, if so, does this threat incite the proclivity for the white male to act violently. Shulman studied 84 white, male, freshman and sophomore students at UC Santa Barbara. According to the study, The subjects are young, educated, white men from stable homes with no mental instability, whose values lean towards a liberal ideology. This experiment considers Koval s psychoanalytic interpretation of white racism, based largely on the Oedipus complex and Skolnick s belief that the conflict that fosters violent racism is a feeling of powerlessness and insecurity in whites. Schulman s focus is to prove that a much larger population is inclined to violent expressions of racism, and that this inclination is partially based on the perceived sexual threat of the Black male. The experiment contrives a conflict requiring the subjects to choose between cheating on a given task, which prevents the victims from being shocked, or not cheating, thus shocking the victim The victims in the test conditions are a white male, a white male known to be sexually involved with a Black female, a ... Since then, the idea of approved extra martial affairs have become even more popular, despite the uneducated critics hollering about it being an insult to the institution of marriage, or a way to justify cheating on one s significant other. As open marriages start to become a more feasible option for couples looking to explore their sexuality, a common question always seems to come up; this inquiry, in fact, will be the purpose of the following text. To begin, I use examples from the 2004 biographical film Kinsey, directed by Bill Condon and produced by Gail Mutrux. While integrating discussion from Tristan Taormino and her book Opening Up: A Guide to Sustaining Open Relationships, I introduce the concept of sociosexuality with the help of Lars Penke s Sociosexual Orientation Inventory. In creating discussion with the above names, I aim to demonstrate just what does make for a successful open relationship. In the film Kinsey (Condon Mutrux, 2004), there is a clear divide between what constitutes a successful and unsuccessful open relationship. Alfred Kinsey and his wife Clara Macmillan both engage in extramarital affairs, yet remain close physically, emotionally, and sexually. Much Ado About Nothing Structuralism Essay Like Father, Like Daughter: Structuralism Amongst the Women in Shakespeare During the Renaissance, it was common for women to behave in a certain manner in a patriarchal society. Women were subordinate to any man in their life, whether it was a husband or a father. However, Shakespeare creates female roles in his plays that often steer away from the common script. These women challenge, deceive, and steal from these men, including one s closest to them in their lives. Surely, one can t believe there are any similarities in this relationship, however, structuralism shows the underlying pattern between Shylock and Jessica. Diane Dreher author of Domination and Defiance: Fathers and Daughters in Shakespeare, points out that the two hold a common trait: Greed. Shylock s greed is expressed through his constant talk on commerce and his precious ducats, and Jessica has inherited that ideology. Before running away with Lorenzo, she drops down a basket filled with money and jewels belonging to her father. One would assume it was an act of reprisal, however, Dreher argues it is greed much like her father s. She describes her as bad and disloyal, unfilial, a thief; frivolous, greedy, without any more conscience than a cat, (pg. 102). These two characters know that money holds a powerful position in their lives. Along with this greed, both are very determined characters in terms of fighting for what they want. With Shylock, he is constantly trying to receive justice through the deal he made with Antonio. Despite the strange request, he demands that he receives his pound of flesh from Antonio and stops at nothing to see it through. This move by the government to intercede the private financial industry sector eventually lead to the US government being the largest lender of mortgages in the US. What is your assessment of how Ben Bernake has handled the situation? The Fed implemented several strategies in an attempt to stabilize the economy by first targeting the struggling Financial Industry. The first move by Bernake was to reduce the target funds rate to 0 0.25% in an attempt to provide liquidity to the banks that needed it. Benake also increased government spending by building up their balance sheet with the assets that were currently frozen in the capital markets, such as mortgage backed securities. The Fed believed that by purchasing these assets from the banks it will remove the assets from the banks but also recreate a market for these type of financial instruments, which would ultimately help the housing industry as well. The American Revolutionwas a turning point in our history, but not one that should be blown out of proportion as many current day people have. Most of the people in America before the revolution had no reason to revolt. In fact, nearly в…” of all colonists were either neutral or against going to war with England. Also, most of the wealthy would buy in so to say by purchasing government bonds that would exponentially grow value as the nation would grow in the future. Not only for these reasons did the wealthy prosper. They were also promised a head at the table when forming the new nation.
