Motivation
 Being a part of the collegiate Formula SAE team , Team Defianz Racing, it
was observed during the testing of our driverless vehicle that the
microprocessors were overheating and the cooling fins that the
microprocessors came with were inadequate for proper cooling. So, we
turned to cooling methods which were small in nature and highly efficient,
since keeping the weight of the car for optimal performance as well as the
energy drawn out by the cooling system should be minimal.
 It was during our research we decided to pursue an unorthodox method of
cooling microprocessors via Jet impingement.

 Naderipour, S et al , 2016, Mixed convection cooling of a cylinder using slot jet impingement at different
circumferential angles
Initial approach
 The initial approach will be to take a standard microcontroller available and
then prepare its CAD model.
 After that, testing of the surface temperature of the fins using a heat gun will
be conducted to know the extent to which the microcontroller is overheating.
 Following this, and taking the considerations from the Driverless division, a
cooling solution will be designed so as to overclock the CPU in such a way that
the temperatures are below maximum.
 The proposed cooling solution will be designed in Ansys and Pointwise after
adequate literature review and testing following which a prototype will be
manufactured to corroborate CFD tests.
 The proposed solution would be designed while keeping in mind two different
design philosophies,
1) External jet impingement
2) Internal jet impingement
 The external method will be explored by having a small jet of air flowing from
the radiator of the car at extremely high velocity for jet impingement
 The internal method will explore a vibrating membrane that creates a pressure
loss, leading to jet impingement. The membrane will be excited via small
solenoids to a very high frequency .

Initial approach  The initial approach will be to take a standard microcontroller available and then prepare its CAD model.  After that, testing of the surface temperature of the fins using a heat gun will be conducted to know the extent to which the microcontroller is overheating.  Following this, and taking the considerations from the Driverless division, a cooling solution will be designed so as to overclock the CPU in such a way that the temperatures are below maximum.  The proposed cooling solution will be designed in Ansys and Pointwise after adequate literature review and testing following which a prototype will be manufactured to corroborate CFD tests.
  • 5.  The proposed solution would be designed while keeping in mind two different design philosophies, 1) External jet impingement 2) Internal jet impingement  The external method will be explored by having a small jet of air flowing from the radiator of the car at extremely high velocity for jet impingement  The internal method will explore a vibrating membrane that creates a pressure loss, leading to jet impingement. The membrane will be excited via small solenoids to a very high frequency .
