HIV-AIDS is caused by infection with the HIV virus. In 2014, over 36 million people were living with HIV and 1.2 million died of AIDS, most in Sub-Saharan Africa. HIV is transmitted through sexual contact, exposure to infected blood or bodily fluids, or from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. Prevention methods include condom use, antiretroviral treatment, and antiviral drugs administered shortly after potential exposure or during pregnancy and childbirth.
