This document describes the histology of structures in the digestive system, including the tongue, salivary glands, and taste buds. The tongue contains four types of papillae - filiform, fungiform, circumvallate, and foliate - which vary in shape and presence of taste buds. There are three major salivary glands - parotid, submandibular, and sublingual. Each gland contains serous or mucous acini and a duct system to release secretions. Taste buds contain gustatory and supporting cells and detect different tastes.

The mucose membrane lining of gastrointestinal tract is stratified squamous epithelium at the esophagus which slowly convert into simple columnar epithelium at the stomach until the anus it converts back into the stratified squamous epithelium at the lower half of the anal canal. The stratified epithelium is a wear and tear epithelium.
As it passes down from the small to large intestine, goblet cells increase because as it passes down water was absorb, goblet cells function to produce mucous.

The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, will provide insight into new directions in targeted therapeutic approaches for older adults with mantle cell lymphoma.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounting for 5% to 7% of all lymphomas. Its prognosis ranges from indolent disease that does not require treatment for years to very aggressive disease, which is associated with poor survival (Silkenstedt et al, 2021). Typically, MCL is diagnosed at advanced stage and in older patients who cannot tolerate intensive therapy (NCCN, 2022). Although recent advances have slightly increased remission rates, recurrence and relapse remain very common, leading to a median overall survival between 3 and 6 years (LLS, 2021). Though there are several effective options, progress is still needed towards establishing an accepted frontline approach for MCL (Castellino et al, 2022). Treatment selection and management of MCL are complicated by the heterogeneity of prognosis, advanced age and comorbidities of patients, and lack of an established standard approach for treatment, making it vital that clinicians be familiar with the latest research and advances in this area. In this activity chaired by Michael Wang, MD, Professor in the Department of Lymphoma & Myeloma at MD Anderson Cancer Center, expert faculty will discuss prognostic factors informing treatment, the promising results of recent trials in new therapeutic approaches, and the implications of treatment resistance in therapeutic selection for MCL.

Hematology/oncology fellows, attending faculty, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL).

numerous mucosal projections called papillae
– In contrast, the mucosa of the ventral surface of the
tongue is smooth

– The epithelium on the dorsal surface of the tongue is
irregular or rough owing to numerous elevations or
projections called papillae.
– All papillae on the tongue are covered by stratified
squamous epithelium that shows partial or
incomplete keratinization.

• The most numerous and smallest papillae on the surface of
the tongue are the narrow, conical-shaped filiform papillae.
• Covered by St. Sq. keratinized epithelium.
• Do not contain taste buds. They cover most of the front two
thirds of the tongue's surface.

• Less numerous but larger, broader, and taller than the filiform
papillae are the fungiform papillae.
• These papillae exhibit a mushroom-like shape and are more
prevalent in the anterior region of the tongue.
• Fungiform papillae are interspersed among the filiform

• They have taste buds on their upper surface

dorsolateral surface of tongue.
• Contain many taste buds on lateral side.

– Each salivary gland lobule contains secretory cells that form the serous

– serous acini are surrounded by thin, contractile myoepithelial cells
that are located between the basement membrane and the serous
cells.
– intercalated ducts: small lumina, are lined by a simple squamous or
low cuboidal epithelium, and are often surrounded by myoepithelial
cells.

that exhibit basal striations.
– Intralobular excretory duct: located within the lobules of the gland.
– Interlobular excretory ducts: in the connective tissue septa that

• Sub-mandibular gland is a mixed gland,
containing both serous and mucous acini, with
serous acini predominating.
• Duct system of the submandibular gland is
similar to that of the parotid gland.

acini, however, are mucous.
• Ducts:
– In comparison with other salivary glands, the duct system of the
sublingual gland is some-what different.
– The intercalated ducts are short or absent, and not readily

in the sublingual glands.

in the sublingual than in the parotid and submandibular glands.
