PHI208: WEEK FIVE ASSIGNMENT GUIDANCE
WEEK FIVE ASSIGNMENT GUIDANCE
Notes and Advice
This paper is a demonstration of what you have learned about moral reasoning based on our examining of ethical theories
and specific ethical issues. As such, you should focus your attention on carefully spelling out the reasoning that supports
your conclusion, and relating that to the theories we have discussed in class.
You are free to write on the same topic and question you wrote on in previous papers or choose a different topic and
question.
If you choose a different topic, you would benefit from going through the Week One Assignment exercises.
For a list of acceptable topics to start with, see the options from the list of topics available in the online course. If you are
still unsure of your topic or of how properly to focus it into a relevant ethical question, you are strongly encouraged to
consult with your instructor.
You are free to draw upon the work you did in previous papers, and reuse parts that you feel were strong, but you are not
to simply recycle the previous papers. This paper should reflect the culmination of the development of your thoughts on
this issue, and many of the requirements for the final paper cannot be satisfied by a heavily recycled paper.
The consideration of an objection against your own view is a way of showing that your view has the support of good
reasons and can answer its strongest objections. Therefore, aim at identifying and addressing the strongest opposing
argument you can, bearing in mind that a good thesis should be able to respond to the best arguments for the other side.
Thesis Statement
The thesis statement is more than just a position statement of the sort you provided in the first assignment; rather, it states
the position and the primary reasons in such a way that the reader should have a clear sense of how the reasons support the
position, which is what will be spelled out and explained in the body of the paper. Please see the handout on thesis
statements available in the online course.
Checklist
This checklist can help you ensure that you have completed all of the assignment instructions.
PHI208: WEEK FIVE ASSIGNMENT GUIDANCE
Make sure that you
Provide an introduction that starts with the question, describes the ethical problem (including the most relevant
issues), summarizes your procedure in the paper, and concludes with your thesis statement.
Explain what you think is the best way to reason about this issue, and show as clearly and persuasively as you can
how that reasoning supports your position.
Make reference to at least two of the approaches we have examined in the course.
Raise a relevant objection against your position that you can imagine being raised by someone holding a contrary
position.
Provide a strong response to that objection that shows that your own view can withstand it.

Essay #2 Proposing a SolutionIn ClassFor this essay, you.docxrusselldayna
Essay #2: Proposing a
Solution
In Class:
For this essay, your task is to propose a realistic, thoughtful solution to a problem that affects you or someone you know.
This could be a large scale problem (such as profound national frustration with our electoral system) or a smaller scale
problem (such as a general lack of exciting social life for students who live on campus). While you might need to provide
some “proof ” that your problem is really a problem, the bulk of your argument should aim to convince your reader that your solution is
a very good option for all parties involved.
As you begin drafting in class, your goal should be to produce 2-4 pages of thoughtful prose that:
• briefly introduces your chosen problem and the stakes (why the problem needs to be addressed)
• proposes a realistic and fair minded solution (it could actually work, and people would likely accept it)
• develops 1-3 supporting points for your argument (research sources optional for the first draft)
• pays close attention to the basic features as outlined in SMG
Feel free to use the following template for effective structure:
• an intro paragraph that describes your problem and solution and gives your reader a reason to care
• 1-3 body paragraphs that develop individual points of support
• a brief conclusion that wraps up your argument
First draft requirements:
• To receive full credit for this portion of essay #1, your in-class draft must be at least one full page.
• Our purpose is not to produce final draft quality writing at this phase. Just start by getting your ideas on paper, for
now.
Subsequent Drafts:
Now that you have a basic argument on paper, continue to develop and focus your argument. Feel free to bring this draft
to office hours. Be sure to improve your draft prior to the peer review workshop, to help you produce a solid final draft.
Peer Review Requirements:
Bring three copies for peer-review. This draft should preferably be a full draft, but must be at least 3-4 pages. If you’re
short of 4-5 full pages, include a well-developed outline for the rest of your argument.
Final Draft Requirements:
• 4-5 pages of cleanly written, well-organized, lucid, insightful prose
• 2-4 scholarly or credible sources, with ALL borrowed words and information appropriately cited.
• MLA format (double-spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman font, etc.) incl. Works Cited page
• Submit via SafeAssign, and turn in all invention work and drafts with your final draft
Additional Tips:
• Most any problem you choose can provide options for effective use of research, though you might need to be
inventive in identifying relevant, useful research sources. I’m happy to provide suggestions for research, if you like.
• Remember that opposing viewpoints are not just bowling pins to knock down—your overall solution must account
for major potential objections, rather than ignoring them or hoping your reader won’t notice (for instance, if you
propose to solve climat.
Essay #1Taking a Position on Food Due by 1159pm on Sunday.docxSALU18
Essay #1:Taking a Position on Food
Due by 11:59pm on Sunday April 23rd
We manipulate the planet and all of its creatures. We create, we consume, we build, and we
destroy, but how often do we consider the processes and people that provide unceasingly for our
unquenchable appetites? How often do we consider the consequences? This essay asks that you
consider the inner (and outer) workings of the US food system and then take a position on a
narrowed down aspect of it.
During this project we might ask ourselves any combination of the following: where does our food
come from, and at what cost? How have our foods been processed, conceived, even constructed, and then shipped and
stored? How do we treat the animals we eat? How should we treat them? How are they killed? How conscious are
we of the world we are taking from every single day? Where do we fit in? What do we have to say?
To accomplish your task, you will be using pairings of articles I provide in order to take part in
an ongoing conversation about food. These readings will require you to look closely at what we
eat and how our consumption shapes the world, in both positive and negative ways.
You will need to first consider our relationship with food and the consequences of our eating
habits, on individuals, societies, and the planet that we share, then narrow down your focus to an
individual and focused topic/idea, which you will then research independently so that you might
enter into a scholarly conversation. The goal of this essay is to either make your own claim about
your subject, or to support an already established claim with rational and logical reasons and
evidence in order to convince your reader to take up the same position that you hold.
This essay need not be a soapbox for any political agenda; instead, we are looking for a balance
in rhetorical strategies. Using ethos, pathos, and logos effectively means respecting all viewpoints
while backing up your claims with reputable sources and logical insights/analysis.
In the wise words of Christopher Hitchens: “That which can be asserted without
evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.”
While I value each and every one of your opinions, scholarly readers are less forgiving. Imagine
your audience to be educated readers who are familiar with the topic and themes we will be
exploring. These readers will expect you to back up your claims, and to use reputable sources.
See the end of this prompt for paper specifics / requirements.
Reading and Research
I am providing you with a group of food-related readings. Some of the readings will be
mandatory, as in I expect everyone to read them and use them in their papers. The others are
paired options that you will choose from. Each reading will be labeled on the Module I introduce
it as either mandatory or optional. They are also listed at the end of this prompt.
Make sure to take detailed notes of the sources you do read. It is alw ...

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

1. Introduction

2.
3. Some Topics for Death
Penalty Essay
Whenever you have been given to write
essays on the death penalty, the first thing
that comes to mind is “what I am going to
write that others already have not written?”
4. Here are Some Suggestions
for the Essay
Due to the very nature of the topic, the types
of essays that are best suited will be
argumentative and persuasive. For the other
two types, narrative and descriptive won’t go
that well with the topic. You don’t plan on
writing an essay on death penalty narrating it
or describing a death penalty, as they will be
downright ghastly and highly inappropriate.
Given below are few topics for death penalty
argumentative essays and persuasive essays:
5. Here are Some Suggestions
for the Essay
• Whether death penalty deters violent
crime.
• Whether death penalty has any effect on
the occurrence of violent crimes
• History of the death penalty
• Why some countries are abolishing the
death penalty and why the death penalty
is still practised in some?
6. Here are Some Suggestions
for the Essay
• The economic viability of death penalty
and whether it’s more cost-effective for a
state than lifetime incarceration.
• The philosophy of ‘life for a life’, when
applied in a constitutional framework and
human rights, just tantamount to murder.
• The state or the justice system doesn’t
have the moral right to take a life.
• The moralistic view of the death penalty.
• Death Penalty is much more humane and
moral than lifetime imprisonment
7. Here are Some Suggestions
for the Essay
• Death penalty robs someone of the chance
of redemption and repentance
• Different methods of administering the
death penalty.
• Different laws are governing death penalty
in different states and countries.
8. Topic Ready? Wear your
Researcher Shoes Now
Now that you know how to set the topics for
death penalty argumentative essays, and have
chosen one, it’s time to start with the
research. Here are some tips:
9. Topic Ready? Wear your
Researcher Shoes Now
• Your research should be in tandem with
your topic otherwise what use is of the
information that you worked so hard to dig
out but can’t use.
• Always be on the lookout for statistical
data. When you are writing an essay on
the death penalty, you must have some
statistical data related to crimes that can
be used to support and strengthen your
argument.
10. Topic Ready? Wear your
Researcher Shoes Now
• If you are citing a crime, be accurate with
particulars involved. Check from multiple
sources.
• Read online news articles for the latest
developments. Read the newest events
and debates on the death penalty.
• Check Wikipedia for references and other
scholarly sources for exciting content.
11. Research Done? Now
Organise and Draft
So far, you’ve got the topic and the facts. It
seems like we are halfway done. Now it’s the
time to organise the research and sort the
gold from the junk.
Organize the data that you have got from your
research and sort them according to
relevance. Not all information that you have
found would be usable for you.
12. Prepare your Draft
After you have organised the data collected
from the research now, it’s time to create the
draft.
On the draft, start with the body first. If you
organise and elaborate correctly, the draft will
be your final copy itself. Just start with the
body, move to the conclusion and keep
introductions for the last.
13. On the Body
• All your arguments will be elaborated
along with your claims and the evidence in
support of those.
• Open with your main argument and place
your claims. Provide the evidence in
support of it.
• Also, give examples of the claims that
nullify yours and then present the rebuttal
statements against those claims.
14. On the Conclusion
• This section should bring closure to your
essay.
• Restate your thesis statement
• Summarize your whole argument and
elaborate what the scenario will be like if
your arguments are established.
15. On the Introduction
• This section introduces the reader to your
essay and serves as the first point of
contact.
• Try hooking the reader from the start by
opening with a bang. Open with a quote
on capital punishment or with a statistical
data or two.
• Tie up the quote or data to your thesis
statement.
16. All are Looking Good? Now Revise
and Edit
So, finally, we are down to the proofreading
stage. This is the most critical part because
this stage decides the fate of your essay. You
will be able to remove the errors and mistakes
and make the essay flawless.
17. All are Looking Good? Now Revise
and Edit
Check for factual errors: Whenever you are
using statistical data in your essay make sure
that they are correct. Presenting unauthentic
statistics in your essay isn’t a good thing.
Check for grammatical and spelling
mistakes: Making mistakes in grammar and
spelling is just silly and is unacceptable in so
many ways. Check your draft word by word to
see that they have been avoided.
19. The Ideal State
It’s quite easy to take the life of a person who
has been accused and proven guilty of taking
a life, the moral support for sentencing death
penalty for such a person is readily available.
“The death penalty is an inhumane measure
that humiliates, in any way it is pursued,
human dignity. It is, of itself, contrary to the
Gospel because it is freely decided to suppress
a human life that is always sacred.” — Pope
Francis
20. Public Opinions
The general population is split on the topic of
death penalty, some think it’s the way of
reducing crime, some think it’s inhumane and
should be abolished while some taking the
middle ground by saying that death penalty
should not be sentenced but is to be reserved
for the rarest cases and the most heinous of
crimes.
22. Death Penalty Deters
Crime
People who support the death penalty, often
like to utter their favourite argument, that
fear of punishment of death stops crime,
which has neither a scientific or sociological
base. Numerous studies have been conducted
regarding this topic, and nearly all of them
state that there is no correlation between
death sentences and the decrease in crime.
23. Death Penalty is more Humane
than Lifetime Incarceration
Another populist argument is that death
penalty is the more humane method of
punishment than lifetime incarceration. What
can be more humane than keeping one alive
and more inhumane than taking their lives
and robbing them of their right to live?
Lifetime imprisonment sure sounds much
where a person is confined to a few square
blocks for the rest of their lives.
24. Death Penalty is more
Economically Feasible
Although an argument can be made on
humanitarian grounds about what can be
more valuable than life, let’s take a look at
few things. In the US, due to its irreversible
nature.
The death penalty, being the most severe
form of punishment, must be handled
carefully. When we have power in our hands,
so much so that we can control someone’s
right to life, we ought to more careful and
merciful.
