A Guide to AI for Smarter Nonprofits - Dr. Cori Faklaris, UNC CharlotteCori Faklaris
Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

Obituary. Brian Kern
It was a cold and snowy day in March
when Brian moved with his young family
into Camlet Way. Richard was just 2
years and Nigel 6 months old. It was a real
DIY move as we had very little furniture
and decided to move ourselves. However
the rented van broke down and we had to
borrow another one at the last minute!
The family soon settled in and began to
make contacts– first with the playgroup
and then the Hadley Wood Association in
which Brian became involved-going to
the social events, bonfire building and
guarding against premature lighting!
These were happy and eventful years in
Hadley Wood-off to the boat we kept at
Hayley island on a Friday night –we even
had the boat at home on the driveway over
one winter so that Brian could refit the
galley and ‘heads’.
Membership of the golf club came next
and there were always model aircraft to be
built during the winter months and flown
(and repaired) in the Summer. Retirement
from the Antique trade followed in 1998
and Brian was roped in to help refit the
HWA Centre loos and Peter’s office.
At about this time Brian fulfilled his great
ambition and joined the Volunteers at the
Mosquito aeroplane museum– now de
Havilland Heritage Centre– and became
very involved in the restoration of the
prototype Comet fuselage. This was the
only surviving example of the square windows type. As he had been a de Havilland apprentice at Leavesden
his knowledge was invaluable and when ill health prevented him from being physically involved he would
be on hand to give advice and to source much needed parts.
He will be greatly missed by his family and by his many friends who have been so supportive over these last
few months.

Jeremy Platten and the Whitechapel Bell Foundry
Whitechapel’s famous foundry was first established in 1570. Since then it has made
bells which are now used all over the world. It’s most famous are the Liberty Bell in
America cast in 1752 as a symbol of the United States Independence and in 1858 the
foundry manufactured the thirteen and a half ton Big Ben ringing from the North tow-
er of the Houses of Parliament. Others include the bells of Westminster Abbey and
more recently the Bell of Hope which was sent as a gift from the people of London to
the city of New York after the terrorist attacks of September 11th
2001. Knowing that
Jeremy had retired at the same time as the foundry closed (shame) it seemed a good
moment to meet him and learn about his contribution to its bells.
Jeremy was born in Chase Farm hospital in 1949 subsequently living at 40 Beech Hill
Avenue in Hadley Wood. His father was Chief Clerk of Enfield, a very prestigious
position similar to today’s leader of the Council. Jeremy and his sister (who became a GP in Huntingdon)
went to Primary school at Botany Bay along with the other children from Hadley Wood. His family were
very musical and it quickly became apparent to both them and his piano teacher (Miss Moseley of Parkgate
Avenue.) that Jeremy had perfect pitch. This, according to Wikipedia ‘is a rare auditory phenomenon
characterized by the ability of a person to identify or re-create a given musical note without the benefit of a
reference tone’. Play or sing a note, tap a wine glass or ring a bell and Jeremy will tell you which note it is.
Thus it was that in 1966 Jeremy, accompanied by his father, took the train from Hadley Wood to Moorgate
and thence by tube to the Whitechapel foundry to apply for the post of tuner. There he was interviewed by
Douglas Hughes father of the recent owner Alan. Jeremy was shown around the foundry by Ernie Oliver the
foreman and principal bell tuner, members of whose family had worked at the foundry for the previous 200
years! Jeremy’s job involved first polishing the newly cast bells and then tuning them. This was done by
removing small amounts of metal from the inside of the bell using a lathe, a procedure which required great
skill in bringing each bell to it’s correct pitch. How many bells have passed through Jeremy’s hands and
benefited from his skill is difficult to imagine. Probably thousands. It seems a shame that these skills are not
to be used anymore but a daily commute to Whites bell factory in Appleton near Oxford seemed too far.
He now spends his time enjoying retired life in Hadley Wood, walking, folk and modern sequence dancing,
and is a key member of the bell ringers at St Mary’s church Monken Hadley. St Mary’s eight bells (made in
Whitechapel) can be heard every Sunday morning and evening as well as during practice on Tuesday
evening. To ensure there is no favouritism he also polishes the brass at St Pauls!

Neighbourhood Forum update
At the forum meeting in June, a sub-committee was established to apply for funding and to appoint a Planning
Consultant to help us draft the Neighbourhood Plan and to facilitate the public consultation. We have made
great progress over summer, and in late August we received notification that our funding application has been
approved (subject to formal acceptance). In parallel we have undertaken a tender process and received two
very good proposals. By the time you are reading this we hope to have appointed the preferred consultant, and
also advertised the next Forum meeting.
We have developed an outline project plan, although this will need to be validated once the Consultant has
reviewed the work we have already completed and identified any missing information. The target is to prepare
our first draft Neighbourhood Plan by the end of November, ready for something like 6-8 weeks of pre-
consultation. It is only after all this feedback is assessed and the plan edited, that it will be submitted to
Enfield Council, for independent examination.
This is OUR Neighbourhood Plan. The Consultant will build upon the work we have already undertaken in
our workshop, questionnaire, our meetings and our draft outline of policies. The draft plan will be circulated
to the forum members for comment and amendment, and later versions will be subject to local consultation.
And finally, Enfield Council is required to hold a referendum, with the plan needing a simple majority to be
adopted.
Our Neighbourhood Plan will enable our community to play a much stronger role in shaping the local area
and in influencing and supporting new development proposals. This is because our plan sits alongside the
Local Plan prepared by Enfield Council, and decisions on planning applications will be made using both the
Local Plan and the Neighbourhood Plan. Our plan will set out a positive vision on how the community will
develop over the next ten to twenty years. And our plan will include planning policies that will help deliver
that vision.
Amongst the benefits are;
It can protect areas from types of change.
It can influence new building design.
It can protect our open spaces.
It enables the local community to retain more of the money collected from development (CIL), to spend on
local projects.
It enables us to protect the things we value the most.
It enables us to manage change more effectively, to encourage developers to build what our community needs,
and to influence where and what development should happen.
We are looking forward to gaining the feedback and support of the whole community as we continue
this process.

Station Cuttings: “fantastic” response but it’s not in the bag yet….
GTR’s Head of Strategic Planning returned to
the Rail User Group’s July meeting to confirm
that the initial off-peak weekday timetable
proposal for Hadley Wood had been doubled,
thanks to what he called “fantastic” local re-
sponse. He has submitted to the DfT a week-
day service of 4 tph, which would be the most
frequent here for as long as anyone can re-
member. ***Please support the RUG and
remember that these are still only pro-
posals, and that late nights and weekends
have yet to be published for consulta-
tion.***
So please take nothing for granted and be pre-
pared to keep up the pressure until the actual
services are finalised and published. You
can sign up to “Inside Track”, GTR’s Stake-
holder extranet, to receive their official up-
dates straight to your inbox, as well as infor-
mation about planned engineering works that
may affect your journey: https://stakeholders.thameslinkrailway.com/apply-to-access-inside-track/
Other visitors and news in brief:
Plans are “in train” for Michael Portillo’s visit to unveil the RUG’s plaque to eminent Hadley Wooder
Sir Nigel Gresley on Saturday 7th
October – see page 7.
Three elected representatives have visited the station in recent weeks to meet RUG members and see our
new step free entrance for themselves, ready to help spread the word to those who most need this amenity:
The Right Honourable Theresa Villiers MP (above), an active supporter of our timetable campaign;
Joanne McCartney AM, Deputy
Mayor of London; and our
new MP for Enfield Southgate,
Bambos Charalambous (third
from left front row).
The RUG continues to work with
GTR and our Station Manager to
obtain enhancements to the
station. You may already have
noticed a new Welcome sign,
noticeboard and litter bins, and
we particularly want much better
signage and lighting for the new
entrance. And finally, courtesy of
the HWA, look out for transfor-
mation of the overbridge!

Sir Nigel returns to Hadley Wood
One of Hadley Wood's most eminent residents of
the 20th century is to be commemorated at a Rail
User Group event for all the family at the Station
next month.
Sir Nigel Gresley was one of Britain's most
famous steam locomotive engineers and erstwhile
President of the Institution of Mechanical Engi-
neers. He lived in Hadley Wood from 1923 to
1929 when he was Chief Mechanical Engineer of
the London and North Eastern Railway.
Sir Nigel was the designer of perhaps the most
iconic steam locomotives ever, Flying Scotsman,
the first to be officially recorded at over 100 mph in passenger service, and Mallard, which still holds the rec-
ord for the fastest steam locomotive in the world, at 126 mph. His engines were shining examples of both
aesthetic and mechanical elegance.
Hadley Wood Rail User Group has partnered with The Gresley Society to fund a permanent memorial to Sir
Nigel at his old home station. It will be unveiled on Saturday 7th October by the television railway
personality and former MP for our constituency, Mr Michael Portillo.
Our two local primary schools will be participating through art and music, and the winners of the RUG's art
competition on the theme "Trains - Past, Present
and Future" will be announced. Pauline Hazel-
wood, a leading member of the Guild of Railway
Artists and judge of the art competition, will pre-
sent her illustrated story books for children based
on the exploits of a group of narrow-gauge steam
engines, together with a model railway layout and
other amusements for younger visitors. There will
also be a raffle and silent auction in aid of Inclu-
sion Barnet, a heritage display by Barnet Museum,
HWA memorabilia of Hadley Wood and our
station and railway-related goodies ideal for early
Christmas purchase. Refreshments will be provid-
ed by the WI and you can even Guess the Weight
of the Train Cake!
Everyone is welcome to gather at the station be-
tween 1000 and 1100 on Saturday 7th October
to enjoy the attractions. The formal proceedings will begin shortly after 1100 and the event concludes
at 1230.

The History of Hadley Wood on display at the rail station
Sally Taylor recently joined the GTR team at Hadley Wood station, assisting
passengers on and off trains and providing a customer-friendly service. She
worked as a postwoman in Hadley Wood in the 1980s, driving Graham
Barnett and other posties to and from their beats and delivering in Parkgate
herself. Later she worked as a Special Police Constable and a Street Warden
in Welwyn Garden City. Casting a fresh eye over the station she thought
something should be done to brighten up the walkway over the bridge.
Looking at the Hadley Wood Association website she saw the slide shows
that record the history of Hadley Wood and contacted Louise Houston at the
HWA Centre to ask if prints could be made to decorate the walkway.
The HWA was only too willing to help and the station manager, is seeking
approval to cover the modest cost of printing. We hope the pictures will be
in place before Michael Portillo comes to unveil the plaque to Sir Nigel
Gresley on 7th
October. In anticipation Sally has set about cleaning the
windows over the bridge.! John Leatherdale
Richard Walker
There must be something about Hadley Wood and its environs that attracts writers.
Not content with Kingsley Amis and Anthony Trollope working up in Monken
Hadley, our small London suburb now houses several authors.
Richard Walker came to Hadley Wood in 2012 via Oxford and Aberystwyth Universi-
ties – with a PhD in zoology from the latter – teaching at Camden School for Girls and
Highbury Grove School, and then a progression into writing non-fiction books while
living in Kentish Town, Chelsea and then Fulham. Over the years he has written or
contributed to over 100 beautifully illustrated children’s books, most – but not all –
involving natural history or the human body, and published by the likes of Dorling
Kindersley (DK), Kingfisher, and Walker Books. Eyewitness Activity: Nature Ranger
(DK), for example, describes outdoor activities such as how to track animals or trap
bugs. The Way We Work (Walker Books), co-authored with renowned illustrator and
MacArthur fellow David Macaulay, takes a light-hearted but comprehensive look at
the human body. As does the even quirkier Dr. Frankenstein’s Human Body Book (DK) in which the
eponymous hero helps his laboratory assistant assemble a new human being from assorted body parts.
I asked Richard how he worked. ‘Normal working hours’ was the reply. No writing into the night or at a
local café as per J.K.Rowling for him. ‘But’ he points out, ‘writing for children is not easy. You must be
scientifically accurate and up-to-date, and be able to explain things simply and succintly’. That he does this
extremely well is clear by the long list of his popular books on the internet or from Amazon.
Now living in Kingwell Road with his wife Teresa, and with two grandsons a few doors away, Richard is
still writing but is taking an increasing interest in the community. After a spate of burglaries in his road he
was much involved with the formation of Kingwell Road Neighbourhood Watch.
He is also an active member of the Rail User Group and is taking a keen interest in the Hadley Wood
Association. Already a good and effective neighbour, I suspect here is a future pillar of this community.

Development issues
Trent Park
Enfield's planning committee recently granted permission for the redevelopment of the former Middlesex
University campus in Trent Park for 262 residential units (including 58 affordable), with all heritage
features, including the landscape to be fully restored, returning the site to its former glory as the country
estate of Sir Philip Sassoon. Most importantly, permission was granted for a Museum across the ground
floor and basement of the important Grade 2 listed mansion. Readers will be aware that this has been the
subject of a long and challenging campaign that I launched in 2014, and I am delighted that the Trust I now
chair can now proceed with the establishment of a world-class museum at this historic site.
The Prince's Regeneration Trust backed museum will highlight the critical role Trent Park played in World
War Two, described by Historic England as being on par with Bletchley Park, as well as the pre-war
Sassoon-era of the site. It will also serve as an educational resource with school visits being an integral part
of our vision. I would like to thank the countless local people who have backed the campaign over the past
three years - we could not have succeeded without you. We still have hurdles to cross, including fundrais-
ing a significant sum to succeed, but together with our fantastic team I am optimistic that within a few years
we will be up and running and be a huge asset to our area.

A Group formed to help protect and enhance the Hadley Wood Conservation Area
Hadley Wood Conservation Area covers the earliest parts of Hadley Wood, built in the late nineteenth/ early
twentieth century, and includes most of Crescent East and West and a short part of the northern side of
Lancaster Avenue (as far as number 33). This area was designated a Conservation Area in 1989 and Enfield
Council has particular controls over planning in place with the intention to preserve and enhance this
historic suburb. Enfield Borough has 22 Conservation Areas and operates a Conservation Advisory Group
that meets monthly to review and provide advice to the Council on planning and development in these
Conservation Areas. This group has representation from volunteers living across many of the Conservation
Areas who have formed 'Study Groups' for their particular area. In the past the Southgate Civic Trust has
taken on the role of representing Hadley Wood Conservation Area - but the Trust is based in Southgate and
they not able to keep such a close interest in Hadley Wood as would local residents.
Southgate Civic Trust contacted the Hadley Wood Neighbourhood Forum earlier this year to encourage the
formation of a Hadley Wood Conservation Area Study Group. This Study Group will review and provide
comments to Enfield Council on planning applications in the Conservation Area and participate in the
Conservation Advisory Group meetings to guide Council Planning and development decisions in the area.
Given the ongoing pressure on the Conservation Area by development schemes, this group provides an
opportunity for local residents to have a stronger voice regarding the protection and enhancement of the
Conservation Area than they would as individuals. If you are interested in joining the group or would like
more information please contact me, on lewtemple@yahoo.co.uk

New books by Hadley Wood authors
THE PREQUEL:IT HAPPENED HERE
John Kingston, a Hadley Wood resident for over 45 years, has crafted a chilling story in three volumes
which assumes that the assassination of President Kennedy
in November 1963 was not only planned but was the
catalyst for the long feared invasion of Western Europe by
the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact.
The 450 page first volume concludes with the "Origins of
the Conspiracy" which begins in Tsarist Russia in 1914 and
ends in a San Francisco Post Office thirty years later.
Volumes Two and Three recount the collapse of democratic
government in Britain, the re-emergence of the Soviet
Union following a limited United States nuclear strike, but
concentrates on events in the United Kingdom as militant
Trade Unions fail to overthrow the government but create a
situation where the extreme Right gain public support
resulting ultimately in a Right Wing government led by a
figurehead President Oswald Mosley. A rigged Referendum banishes the Monarchy and book three ends
with the British people crushed and left without hope.

Hadley Wood’s wildflower meadow.
Started three years ago by the Hadley
Wood Association in conjunction with
Hadley Wood Primary school our
wild flower meadow flourishes along
with its bees and butterflies. In case
you would like a look in the Spring,
start at the HWA car park (where the
schoolchildren are set down each
morning) and walk up the field ahead
between the HWA Centre and the
Primary school. The path crosses this
field diagonally passing the site of the
annual bonfire. Walking through the
line of trees on the left hand side of
the field you come to an open area
before entering the woods over the
railway. A field is to your left. Its top
half has been left untouched for
comparison. The lower half is the
meadow. This half was ploughed and tilled, it’s soil ph and nitrogen content measured then sown with an
appropriate collection of wild flower seed from a reputable seed merchant. Each year the field is cut and
neither herbicides nor fertilisers (widely disliked by wild flowers) are allowed anywhere near.
The results have been promising though setbacks have occurred. One (setback) in particular was the wide-
spread growth of yellow ragwort, a plant poisonous for horses and much disliked by farmers. Given the
absence of any horses in the area it was not really a problem but there were concerns raised by some
residents and so we removed most of it, leaving a few ragworts for the Cinnabar moths to lay their eggs.
Otherwise the meadow was covered by white Ox-Eye daisies interspersed by a variety of wild flowers
including Birds foot trefoil, buttercups, ragged robin, agrimony, vetch and self- heal.
Creation of a meadow is a slow process. Experts promise ten years of hard work and disappointment.
However the main intention was to help and support our failing bee population and to provide a source of
biological interest for the schoolchildren. This much seems to be progressing well. So far so good. This
year the meadow has been sown with red field poppy seeds. If you have any good quality wildflower seeds
to spare feel free to scatter or plant them in a shallow scrape wherever you can find a space. Bring the
kids along, remember where you sowed your seeds but be prepared for a subsequent no show in Spring.
Tell them that seeds, like some children you know, do not always do what they should!

Letter to the Editor
Thanks and opportunities from Inclusion Barnet
Dear All,
I’m writing to thank the traders and residents of Hadley
Wood for the fantastic sum of £735 donated to Inclusion
Barnet following the raffle to mark the grand opening of
Hadley Wood railway station’s new accessible entrance.
As a small charity, contributions like this mean a huge
amount to us, and will go towards a project to make
opportunities to take part in sport and physical activity
more accessible to disabled people in Barnet.
Inclusion Barnet is a Deaf and Disabled People’s Organi-
sation, which means that the trustees and most of the
staff have lived experience of disability. We value this
experience, and where possible use it to deliver our
services through a model of peer support. This means
that we try to work in a person-centred and empowering
way, and don’t claim expertise over the people we work
with. We are involved in a wide range of projects, including the local Wellbeing Hub, Hate Crime aware-
ness training and a Safe Spaces scheme, the ‘Into Sport’ project and peer support brokerage.
We also believe that disabled people have a huge amount of experience which can benefit everybody, to
which end we are leading on the delivery of two libraries (East Barnet and South Friern, in partnership with
the London Borough of Barnet) and also a local giving scheme, both projects to benefit, involve and support
the whole community. Please do get in touch if you would like to support or volunteer for either of these
projects at caroline@inclusionbarnet.org.uk. East Barnet Library is a short bus ride or walk from New
Barnet Station, one stop away from Hadley Wood.
It would be great to have more Hadley Wood residents involved as it is clearly a community capable of great
things – I was really impressed by the way in which the Hadley Wood Rail User Group ran such a great
campaign to get the accessible platform installed – a great achievement which will make a real difference to
many people, and make the platform more accessible for everyone.
Thank you again to all the businesses that gave raffle prizes and all the people who bought tickets, your
support is enormously appreciated and makes a real difference.
With many thanks and best wishes
