Healthy Living
 This unit is assessed through the completion of an externally
set examination.
Examination format
 The learner will complete a 60-minute examination with 50
marks.
This unit is
 Externally assessed using a paper-based exam marked by
Edexcel.
 Learners will complete a paper-based test that contains a
mixture of question styles, including objective questions,
short-answer questions and extended writing questions.
 The learner will need to demonstrate knowledge and
understanding, the application of this knowledge and
understanding, and the skill of evaluation.
Explore the factors that contribute to healthy and
unhealthy lifestyles, and their effects on health
and wellbeing
 Both healthy and unhealthy lifestyles have an effect on
an individual’s physical, intellectual, emotional and
social needs. These are referred to as P.I.E.S.
 Copy this into your book
Physical Intellectual
Emotional Social
 Physical - anything to do with the body
 Intellectual – to do with the ability to
understand things and think intelligently
 Emotional – feelings
 Social – to do with interacting with other
people.
 Holistic – this is taking the whole person in to
consideration.
 Write this into your self directed study book.
What is meant by the term ‘healthy living’?
What choices do people make which affect
whether they have a healthy or unhealthy
lifestyle?
Discuss with your partner & write your notes self
directed study book.
 Physical effects: disease and illness; weight
gain/loss; body fat composition; short-term health
problems; long-term health problems.
 Intellectual effects: reduced potential success in
education; negative impact on long-term career
prospects; inability to think clearly.
 Discuss with your partner:
 How can an unhealthy lifestyle lead to the
intellectual effects shown above?
 Learners to work independently to come up
with the main P.I.E.S effects of a healthy
lifestyle.
Write this into your self directed study book.
The term ‘health’ has been defined by
the World Health Organisation a:
‘a complete state of physical, mental and
social well-being and not merely the
absence of disease or infirmity’.
 Bill has just started a job as a career advisor.
 He has fallen off his bike on the way to work
and has broken his leg. He has had a pin put in
his leg to support. He has been given
painkillers and allowed home.
 This seems to be a good solution to his physical problem,
but if we were to consider Bill holistically then we should
look at the following factors:
 His financial situation: he may have no work and therefore
no money?
 How will he get around?
 Can he cook and get to shops?
 How close are his social contacts?
 He lives alone – he may become anxious or depressed about
his situation.
 All areas of health impact on one another. However, in this
unit we will be looking at each area as separate items so that
you can identify them easily.
 Having a healthy lifestyle will have a positive
effects on all areas of health and unhealthy
lifestyle will negatively affect health. Consider
information given in the table and look at
physical, intellectual, emotional and social
effects of a healthy and unhealthy lifestyle.
 Print the table from the book chapter. – Pg 201
 Stick the table into your book!
Please write the questions aswell as the answers! This will be checked in
your academic tutor slot
