Human sexuality can be understood through three dimensions - physical/biological, psychological, and sociocultural. The physical/biological dimension refers to a person's sex and gender identity which may differ, as well as physical attributes. The psychological dimension involves how teenagers view their own attractiveness and body image, which can impact behaviors. The sociocultural dimension recognizes how religion, laws, and social norms shape views of sexuality and influence which behaviors are considered acceptable versus criminal.

Young people with disabilities are often left out when teaching sexual health. Perhaps we believe they are incapable of comprehending the messaging or we assume they are asexual or uninterested in sexual intimacy. As a community, we believe we are underestimating both their capacity to understand their critical need to receive sexual health resources. Participants will leave this session with increased knowledge on the importance of teaching sexual health to young people with disabilities and tips on how to adapt existing curricula to work with this population.

Julie Rothwell, MSW, provides technical assistance and program evaluation to programs and strategies that fall within the Health impact area at United Way of Greater Milwaukee. In addition, she manages all activities associated with the Healthy Girls Initiative which is United Way of Greater Milwaukee’s targeted approach to prevent teen pregnancy and sexual violence. - 11. Physical / Biological Dimension • Every society has its own standard of beauty. • A person is usually judged to be physically attractive according to the standard. • In the Philippines, having a fair skin is viewed desirable; hence the use of whitening products is rampant among Filipinos
- 12. Psychological Dimension •When a teenager asks: Am I beautiful? Or Am I handsome? He/she is basically comparing his/her physical attributes to the standard of physical attractiveness existing society. •A negative body image may lead to negative behaviors. A teenager who thinks he/she is fat may acquire eating disorders like bulimia, or anorexia nervosa.
- 13. Sociocultural Dimension • Various social factors also affect a person’s sexuality. One of these influences is religious beliefs that influence a teenager’s feeling about morality, sexual behavior, premarital sex, divorce, contraception, abortion, and masturbation. • Laws allow or disallow and penalize certain sexual behaviors. In most conservative societies, such as in the Middle East, homosexuality is considered a crime.
