Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

• Includes at least 12 honors credits
• Comprised of HON 42xx, Thesis,

knowledge
• Choose frequency and total of

3. Road 1: Departmental Honors
• At least 12 Honors credits (these are not additional credits, just taken as Honors)
• Includes a HON 42xx Junior/Senior Seminar (can be used to meet some Gen Ed
requirements)
• Must have at least a 3.3 GPA and 56 credits to register for HON 42XX
• Interdisciplinary

8. 3. Honors Option
• Select a course: 2000-level or higher
• Taught by full-time or part-time faculty (not GTA or GRA)
• Add an Honors Project designed by you and your instructor
• Earn B or better in course and on project
• That course and its associated credits receive the Honors
Designation
9. Honors Option Process: What do I do?
• Download Honors Option form from Honors website.
• Updated each semester with deadline specified: https://honors.wayne.edu/students/forms
• Talk to your instructor to determine project & fill out proposal form
• Attach syllabus and project description
• Submit proposal packet to the Honors College before deadline
• Once approved, earn a B or better in course and assignment
• The Honors College will contact instructor for Honors grade & work with Records
to add the Honors notation
10. Beauty of the Honors Option
• You earn Honors credits by taking a course you already needed for your degree
• You go more in depth and/or more widely into the course than other students
• You have a chance to create a relationship with your instructor
• Mentor
• Research
• Letters of reference
• You add a project to the course and are able to earn 2-5 Honors credits, depending upon the
number of credits in the class.
