Theme Of Norwegian Wood
Norwegian Wood is a nostalgic novel imbued by death, suicide and sexuality. Murakami describes
a Japanese youth beset by doubts, embedded in the Spleen and surrounding by dreams. The
protagonist and narrator, Watanabe, is remembering his past as a university student, while in a
plane bound to Hamburg. All his memories appear because of the song during the landing,
Norwegian Wood by The Beatles. The song brings him back twenty years earlier, during the Sixties
in the middle of the Japanese studentrevolution.
After this preamble, we discover the high school life of Watanabe and the original context on
which the whole story rely. The trio composed by him, Kizuki, his best friend and Kizuki s
girlfriend, Naoko. This represents the stability of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From the beginning of the novel, we feel that the different conceptions of what is to live to
Watanabe and Naoko will make their lovestory impossible. The distance is unbounded between
the two characters in their platonic relation, and take a geographical dimension early in the
book. However Watanabe does not hesitate. If he is uncertain about everything in his life, he
want to live and is not absorbed by Naoko s death drives. Likewise he is not attracted by the
inhumanity of Nagasawa. Every characters of the book are allegoric of Japanese and widely
more generally human beeing. Here is the strength of Murakami s work, beyond a very Japanese
context firmly anchored in student turmoils of the Sixties in Tokyo, story and characters are
universal. Main subjects like suicide, responsibility, depression and aspiration to live fully resonate
in the reader s mind, and the very Japanese sensibility that emerges from the work is transcended by

Austin Vs Hart
H.L.A. Hart first takes issue with John Austin first point. John Austin believed in a many
species of commands. Hart disagrees with Austin s statement completely. Hart believes that the
idea that the law consists only of directives and orders which are followed by possible
punishments do not help to explain the current legal systems. Hart finds value in the type of
laws called power conferring rules. The rules offer less threats and actually establish a framework
for which citizen can understand and define their individual rights and obligations they have. Hart
also considers other types of laws. Hart views laws that are established to identify the limitation
and the powers of the judicial and legislative branches. He argues that it is impossible to view
these laws as mere orders backed by threats... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hart views primary rules as rules that require actions that will ultimately create duties and
obligations. For example, let say you go to Wal Mart and buy two hundred dollars worth of
groceries, but you then decide to walk out of the store without paying. You can reasonably expect
that there is a law requiring you to pay. In contrast, secondary rules are used to establish
procedures which allow modification of primary rules. Hart envisions a world of just primary
rules, but says that without secondary rules the world would lack true understanding of the law and
ultimately would be faced with many challenges. Hart defines three problems that can be remedied
with three different types of secondary rules which include: rules of recognition, rule of change and
rule of adjudication. Of those three Hart believes that the rule of recognition. The rule of
recognition tells us basically how to establish and implement a law. In the modern legal systems
that is the most important contribution that arises from the rule of recognition is it allows us to
determine the validity of a

5. Energy Implications: Why did China believe the building of the Three Gorges Dam was an
absolute necessity in terms of energy production?
Answer: The Yangtze used to flood every year wiping out mountainside villages, you can see this
throughout Chinese history. Hundreds of thousands died during the dynastic era due to flooding.
The dam allowed China to regulate water flow and harness it for energy. It also was part of the
government efforts to redirect water flow to drought stricken areas. 6. Energy Implications:
Compare the energy production of the Three Gorges Dam to the Hoover Dam. Although China
believed the Dam would provide the nation with 10% of its power needs, what is the current
amount of power it actually is supplying?
Answer: China thought that the Three Gorges Dam would provide 10 percent of China s total
energy needs. During the years of construction, the population МЃs demand of energy has reduced
that number to 3 percent. The Hoover Dam produces, on average, about 4 billion kilowatt hours of

Analytical analysis and comparism of an everyday text with...
Choose one every day and one literary text. Using at least two analytical techniques from E301,
analyze and compare your two texts in terms of their creativity and literariness, drawing on material
from both parts of the module.
In this paper I will analyze and compare a literary text and an everyday text, in terms of their
creativity and literariness. I chose Philip Larkin s (1964) poem, Self s the man (see Appendix, Text
1), as the literary text for analysis because it is not only smooth and pleasing to the eye and mind
that it seems effortless to read and contain within one s self but also because it arouses so many
emotions which makes it ideal for analysis. In Self s the man Larkin (1964), is being cynical
towards relationships ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In my analysis, I will first apply Jakobson s (1960) methodology, stylistics approach and Carter s
(1997) criteria of literariness to the two texts and then contrast them with illustrations in terms of
interpretative schemata. My intention in doing so is to highlight some of the strengths and
weaknesses of these approaches and also modes in which they interact to better comprehend the
nature of creativity and literariness.
On the graphological level, in Text 1, the noticeable attributes are the traditional lineation, stanza
divisions of poetry, and the presence of standard punctuation. The poem has 8 stanzas in all and
each stanza consists of 4 lines. This creates a set rhythmic pattern, particularly in conjunction with
the rhyme scheme. Text 2, on the other hand, on a graphic level, uses full capitalization in order to
emphasize every letter in the ad and make it look trim and tidy. The headline uses larger, capital
and bold letters to draw readers attention and make them curious about what the advertisement
mainly has to say, leading them to continue on reading unconsciously by arousing their curiosity
and desire to know more about the product and subsequently persuading them to buy it. Moreover,
Text 2, illustrates graphological deviation, by using solid background colors, and a brilliant
diamond ring to focus all the reader s attention to.
On the phonic level, Text 1 has little

communication when it come to The movie The judge is about a strained relationship between a
father and son. The effects of aging can affect an entire family or community. These affects can be
seen in the movie from a social, psychological, as well as from a physical standpoint.
The Judge is about a very successful, but shady defense attorney played by Robert Downy Jr, who
lives in Chicago. He must return home to Carlinville, Indiana because of his mother s passing. While
he is there several life changing events transpire testing his loyalty to his father. His father played
by Robert Duvall has been a Judge for 42 years; he begins to show signs of memory loss due to
aging which lands him in a position that puts him on the opposite side of the bench. Can these two

The thesis statement is supported by the father s action of continuing to work into his later years
and even after his cancer diagnosis. The thesis is further supported by the son who after several
years of separating himself from his family is compelled to stay in his hometown with his father
and brothers after legal troubles, but more importantly, medical issues arise.

Literary Analysis Of The Painted Bird
Oyuki Paniagua
Professor Brienza Larsen

July 21 2017
Different
It s hard to imagine having your entire family murdered as a young kid, living in a century where
war attacks were in every corner. This was the life of the young boy in the story The Painted Bird.
Although the author, Jerzy Kosinski, never confirmed the book as an autobiography, it was easy
to feel the pain as if he experienced it himself. The Painted Bird is a heartfelt novel that gives us
all a glimpse into the dark reality of our past. The author is able to walk us through what I
believe was his life. We are lead through a series of trauma the young boy experienced. The boy
shares the dark reality that anyone that is that vulnerable can be tortured, abused and killed by
anyone, including family. The boy s tragic life is a testimony of how terrifying life was like
during the world war. Nevertheless, it seems as though life was just a bit tougher for him because
he was different. Life can be difficult for many people, but it is undeniable that being different can
affect the way others view you. *Such life was Kosinskis, Being different than the people around
him made him a target.
Through the juxtaposition of childish innocence and the most brutal forms of fallen adult
experience, such works sum up the universal trauma of war in a myth of unrivaled concentration
and clarity. (Houghton)

Please Ignore Vera Dietz Summary
Have you ever changed yourself for someone? Bought clothes that were popular, or changed
your attitude for your friends or parents. Finding yourself when everyone around you is
changing, morphing is one of that things that most people struggle with their entire life and
sometimes it defines us and other times leaves us a pickle on a big mac. Please Ignore Vera
Dietz is a novel about Vera the main protagonist going on with daily life like nothing happened
after her best friend Charlie dies. This novel communicates the idea that you are always not the
problem and that you need to step back and look at what you have, and self acceptance is the key
to all your problems.
Contemplation is a commanding thought; it can make things better or worse. Veras first big
thought of contemplation is when her mother left the family, and weather or not it was her fault.
It haunts her father that Sindy left and he dwells on her in the most minuate ways, like keeping
her clothes in the closet or her class china wear on the cabinet. Vera always wonders if its her
fault for her mother leaving because her mother in Veras words never wanted her. She is also
confused on what she wants to do with her life after college, does she want to become a vet or just
give up her dreams completely because everyone thinks that she is just going to become a stripper
just like her mother. I struggle with the same things everyday wondering if my mother would have
done if she didn t have me at such a young age.

Pay for Performance Paper
The need to improve both the quality and the safety of health care in the United States is well
documented. Traditional strategies to stimulate improvement include regulation, measurement of
performance and subsequent feedback, and marketplace competition. Despite limited evidence,
public reporting of hospital quality data and pay for performance have emerged as two of the
most widely advocated strategies for accelerating quality improvement (Lindenauer, 2007). Quality
health care is very important to both physicians and patients because in essence everyone wants to
be in good health in order to live a long quality life. The United States has a lot of work to do on

These payment structures have led to concerns about undersupply of needed services (Virtual
Mentor, 2006). The quality of health care is directly affected by the system costs. The cost of
health care has always been a major concern in the United States. With managed care systems
and pay for performance approaches cost does directly affect the quality. The major questions
that surround this issue is are physicians being paid fairly for their services, and are the services
deserving of the costs associated with it. These questions may not be fully answered to the
preference of those involved with health care. The cost of health care will always be a
debatable question but in essence there needs to be some type of commission that can fairly
determine cost of health care services so that all parties involved are compensated fairly. A
physician takes an oath to provide quality care to their patients no matter the cost but the
physician also deserves to be compensated fairly for the services they do provide. According to
the AMA, fair and ethical PFP programs are committed to improved patient care as their most
important mission. Evidence based quality of care measures, created by physicians across
appropriate specialties, is the measures used in the programs (AMA 2005). Principals of the

If you try to relax by eating more you may only increase the risk of having hypertension. How to
be successful with weight loss for a healthier lifestyle most people start by eating the right foods
that can help us avoid certain diseases or recover faster when illnesses occur. These and other
important functions are fueled by chemical substances in our food called nutrients. Nutrients are
classified as carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water. Although humans need
food to survive, many people eat too much, or choose the wrong foods to eat, which leads to the
body putting on weight. When you eat more calories than your daily energy requirements the
extra calories are stockpiled as body fat. Slowly these fat cells keep building up and settle on the
hips, waist, thighs, upper arms and back, as well as around the heart, kidneys, liver and other
organs. Fortunately body fat can easily convert into energy; however, you must reduce your fat
intake and exercise regularly. If you only reduce your fat and don t exercise, your body will also
break down muscle tissue and use them for fuel. Many people struggle to lose weight that is put on

The Blind Side By John Lee Hancock
On the surface, The Blind Side may seem like a great feel good movie, but once the movie is
analyzed, it s apparent that the movie is filled with blatant stereotypes as well as racism. The
Blind Side, based off of a true story, shows the protagonist escaping poverty against all odds and
growing up to be very successful with the help of a select few. Although some may argue that
escaping poverty and becoming successful like Michael did is very possible this connotation of
escaping poverty depicted in the movie is highly unrealistic, contributes to derogative
stereotypes, and would also be very unlikely to happen in real life. The Blind Side, a feel good
sports drama intended for everyone, especially young kids and teenagers, was released on
November 20th in 2009 and was directed by John Lee Hancock. The Blind side was very
successful in the box office, grossing hundreds of millions of dollars and quickly became the
movie to see of the thanksgiving holiday season. The Blind Side starred Sandra Bullock, playing
the role of an extremely wealthy white woman. Her character, Mrs. Tuohy, a feisty, passionate and
caring Christian woman, took in a homeless African Americankid, Michael Oher. Despite the
success of the movie in the box offices, the movie received very mixed reviews from critics. The
mixed opinions of this movie are largely due to the controversial issues the movie addresses as well
as the controversial issues this movie does not address. Many critics thought

The Purpose Of Fractional Distillation
Discussion
The purpose of this experiment is to identify two compounds from an unknown given liquid by
separating them into three components using fractional distillation. Distillation is the act of heating
and cooling liquids in order to obtain a pure sample. There are two main types of distillation: simple
distillation and fractional distillation. Simple distillation is the most basic form of a distillation.
This method is more helpful when the separation between a liquid and a solid needs to happen or
between two liquids with boiling points that have a difference of about 50В°C or higher.
Fractional distillation is similar to simple distillation; however, it is used to separate two liquids
with similar boiling points. Fractional distillation works by first heating up the solution of the two
liquids. Once the solution begins to boil, the unknown compound that has a lower boiling point will
evaporate and rise into a distillation apparatus. The newly formed gas will travel through the
apparatus until it is cooled down, at which point the gas will not be able to maintain the energy
needed for this specific phase, and will begin to condense back into a liquid. The same process will
occur with the second liquid, the only difference being that it needed a higher temperature in order
to transform into a gas. The two new liquids will each have a higher percentage of the unknown
compound, thus making them have a higher purity rate.
The second technique that will be used to identify

The level of the population s level of physical activity is becoming a major public health concern
in the United States (Wahlgren, 2011). As a result of urban sprawl, Americans rely heavily on
personal vehicles to travel to work or other destinations. This is leading to a sedentary life style for
the public as they take to their cars to travel to their destination. The public s perception of the

By supporting existing communities, community values, redeveloping underutilized sites, and
developing livability measures, smart growth helps to establish an environment that people can
enjoy walking and not feel unsafe within the community (Ewing, 2010). The principles of smart
growth is to establish a sustainable community that residents have access to businesses, work
and a safe place to raise their families. Through the implementation of mixed land use, residential
density, street connectivity, and physical infrastructure the community will establish itself as an
area that is closely associated with other areas viewed as being highly walk able for both
residents and visitors (Wahlgren, 2011). In order to achieve a smart growth design, safety
requirements must be addressed for pedestrians and bicyclists. However, current designs intended
to address safety needs for motorists and pedestrians are at odds with each other. Community
street design is evident of an out dated design guidance on roadways. Currently the selection of a
roadway s design speed determines the design of the roadway s geometric features. Roadways
with higher speeds tend to maintain a larger lane width, wider clear zones, and longer sight lines
for drivers (Dumbaugh, 2011). Current traffic safety theory, passive safety, emerged during the
1950s and 1960s when safety advocates sought to

Prayer Is An Important Part Of Someone s Life
Prayer is something we have an honor of doing. It s the best thing that anyone can do. God stops
and listens. He invites everyone to come in and have a talk with him. God promises to listen to
us. God will answer us if we try and talk to him. Jeremiah 33:3. Some of us have seen prayers
answered. It is something about having alone time with Godsomething we should do often.
I. Pray Daily
God talks to us through His word every time we open up and read the Bible. We speak to God while
we pray. Prayer is an important part of someone s life. We pray and sometimes we praise Him in
songs that we sing. While we be at church or alone. (Philippians 1:3 4) When we face
temptations, prayer can make us feel secure. (Deuteronomy 31:8) God will never leave our side,
even though we leave his side. He will never fail us even though we fail Him. (1 Thessalonians
5:17) Praying without ceasing. Build a relationship with God. Your prayer life shows how your
relationship with God is. It s never too much prayer time when you talk to the great almighty
God that created you and died for you on Calvary s cross for our sins. God is our best friend our
only friend that will not fail us. Praying without ceasing . Ceasing is to end, to halt, to stop. The
Bible says we should keep on praying. God is happy when we talk with Him to thank Him for what
he s done. It is easier for Christians to feel secure by just praying then to actually PRAY. Too many

Negatives Of British Imperialism

Although many positive outcomes came from British imperialism in India, the negative outcomes
outweighed these. The negative effects had a greater impact on the lives of Indian people of all

The British government had taken their jobs, ignored their needs and on top of that raised their
taxation and made it cash exchange which was far harder for the Indians to pay. Now the
Indians were in debt, it was either pay taxes and keep their land or lose their land and eat. With
the lack of food India was soon corrupted with an abundance of famines such as the Agra famine
of 1837 leaving 800 000 dead, the Rajputana famine of 1869 killing 1.5 million and the great
Bengal famine which killed up to 10 million people[3] The Indian soldiers working for the
British or Sepoys as they were called were also treated with the same level of disregard which
led to them having to act against their religion one of these cases was having to bite the cartridges
of their guns greased with either cow or pig fat, the former being sacred to Hindus and the latter

Computer Networks And The Modern World Essay
Computer network technology The subject I will be undergoing in my next year will be
Computer Network Technology BSc Hons. This subject looks at all aspects of computer
networking in the modern world. This course also gives many computing principles such as
systems analysis and database development. I have chosen this course because I have always
been interested in computing and have made a few database systems while working in the army.
I would like to learn more about network security and I hope to work in Germany for two years
before moving to America pursuing a career in network security. I have a keen interest in
networking and have done penetration testing for my old high school. After being made redundant
from the army I hope to improve my knowledge of computing and better my qualifications as
leaving college at nineteen to pursue a career in the military has made me realise that I should of
worked harder at college and gone to university. Knowledge This subject deals with all aspects of
computing but focuses mainly on computer networking. It will give the knowledge to be able to
explain, evaluate and apply techniques and methods to solve a range of computing problems.
Explain and apply project management tools and techniques. Identify, evaluate and justify

The Effects Of Eugenic Sterilization
Eugenics Sterilization, developed by an eminent scientist, Francis Galton, is the science of
improving the qualities of the human species or a human population by controlling breeding to
increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristic traits and decrease the occurrence of
undesirable characteristic traits or genetical defects (Bergman, 2000). Eugenic sterilizationrefers to
the involuntary sterilizationof certain categories of individuals without their need for consent by
those subjected to the procedure (Pozgar, 2012, p. 411). Eugenic Sterilization has ruined thousands
of lives and impacted individual in multiple ways.
Individuals classified as mentally deficient, feeble minded, epileptic, promiscuous, sexual
deviants, or persons classified as habitual criminals were mainly targeted (Pozgar, 2012, p. 411).
Eugenicists argued degenerate traits tainted society through the reproduction of the lowest class
and sterilization was to keep the handicapped from perpetuating themselves (Kaelber, 2014). In
addition, eugenicists also argued that feeble minded individuals were believed to be financial
burdens to society by overcrowding prisons, hospitals and living off welfare (Kaelber, 2014).
Eugenic Sterilization was seen as a way to prevent the spending of tax dollars on the feeble minded
(Kaelber, 2014). These arguments allowed Eugenics to become an acceptable practice. Advocates
believed that getting rid of the feeble minded and mentally deficient would decrease the
undesirable characteristic traits within the human gene pool and ultimately improve the human
population (Kaelber, 2014). The very first eugenic sterilization law was passed in 1919 but it
was never put to use (Kaelber, 2014). Many worried that the law was unconstitutional and there
the State feared putting it into practice (Kaelber, 2014). The landmark 1927 United States
Supreme Court case of Buck Vs. Bell served as a catalyst for many eugenic sterilization programs
across the Country (Scott, 2015). In 1929, The North Carolina General Assembly passed new
sterilization laws (Kaelber, 2014). It stated that the governing body or the responsible head of any
penal or charitable institution supported wholly or in part by the State

Victim Rights
A crime against the state is seen as a violation of the rule of law, while crime against people is seen
as a violation of human rights, and both conditions lead to the punishment of the offender befitting
the crime. In this process of achieving justice, those highly impacted by these wrong actions are
often ignored; the battle between the offender and the Crown often makes the victim, a mere
spectator. The Canadian Criminal JusticeSystem is continuing to do its best in addressing the
dissatisfaction victims feel towards the authorities. However, study of literature shows that although
victim rights have come a long way and are continuing to develop further, they are not successful in
addressing the concerns of the victim. The article, Crime... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Victims often complain about not having enough information about their case and confusion
regarding what rights they are entitled to (McDonald Grossman, 2014, p. 10). The reason
victims feel this way is because they do not know how to access the programs set in place for
them. Proper measures should be taken to allow clear communication between the Crown,
victim, and lawyers. For instance, Mandi Gray, a sexual assault survivor, demanded eight
thousand dollars in restitution money so she could hire a lawyer because she felt defenseless
during the trial. Whereas, the national criminal lawyers association were not in favor of the
offender paying such amount and argued that adequate support services are already available for
victims (McGillivray, 2017). Incidences like these are likely to paint a negative picture of victim
status in Canadian Justice System and decrease the number of victims accessing these resources.
Moreover, it shows interest towards being more concerned about protecting the rights of an
offender, rather than the victim who has been wronged. Also, if the information regarding these
programs is easily available, it will likely increase the rate of victims making use of them.
Therefore, to eliminate future issues like these, support services should expand their options
available for victims and more counseling services should be provided to explain victims their
rights beforehand. Information is the key towards getting rid of any confusion and suspicions
regarding the fairness of the judicial

This article is about heterosexuality and it talks about homos vs. hetero and how it s different in
other culture. Katz goal of this article to get people to have open minds about the name
heterosexuality . He wants to remove the idea of heterosexuality from the realm of the taken for

article make the readers open their mind up to things they never properly thought of and think out
of their own boxes. Makes them think what hereto and homo people are like and how they live

Financial Sustainability For My Family And Extended Family
Regarding to the happiness of the whole family, I do not know the truth whether financial
sustainability for my family and extended family will make us all happy. There is a possibility
that at one point in time I or any other family member will be able to solve the family s financial
difficulties. I do believe that it would be great if no one in the familyhas to worry about the money.
It gives them the options to consider other goals other than making a sustainable career. Yes, I
would love this. I would love to be able to give my family the same freedom I did. I am tired of
seeing people s goal to be about money. In UC Berkeley, there are numerous amount of students
who chose a major for their career solely on the purpose that it is financially sustainable. I am not
working hard right now to be able to make money for my future family. My main reason for
working hard is for myself to accomplish my goal and to be able to expand the knowledge of
humanity. Yes, now I can see how this can be a dilemma for others, but for me if I succeed, my
goal is still able to sustain my family s finance not every member in the extended familyhowever
and keep me permanently happy. This may not be so for others.
Is there a risk for me and my family in attempting my father s goal? Yes, for example I may have
to sacrifice time to earn money. I do not want to be a father who cannot spend time with their wife
and children because of work. The lack of focus on the family will weaken the

What Makes George Herbert Hoover A Good President
Alexandria Helms
Dr. Endsley
HIST 1302
24 June 2016
Herbert Hoover was elected as president in 1929, but before that he was much more. Hoover
was born a Quaker in Iowa, which makes him the only Iowan president. He had a hard childhood
due to both of his parents passing away and leaving he and his two siblings orphans at the age of
9. He then moved in with his uncle in Oregon until he attended college at Stanford, making him
one of the first people to go there. He graduated with a degree in geology and became an engineer.
After awhile Hoover got deeply involved with humanitarian work and was then appointed by
president Woodrow Wilson in 1917,when the US entered WW1, as head of Food Administration.

provided jobs for the unexperienced and unemployed. They were not allowed to work with private
industry so instead they put their focus on construction of public things such as schools, roads and
parks. They also gave employment opportunities to artists, writer, theater directors and musicians
(The New Deal). Then, in July of 1935, came the Wagner Act which created the National Labor

workers fairly. Workers all over the nation grew to be more violent and forceful. They started strikes
that would eventually grow to multiple cities at once. They were demanding their rights and
fighting for what they wanted. The conservatives on the Supreme Court argues that they were in

The Theme Of Absurdism In The Stranger By Albert Camus
Arul P Saravanan
Ball
World Lit/ Writ
27 November, 2017
Too Hot For You
Albert Camus wrote The Stranger to express absurdism within society by having Meursault, the
main character, suffers many ordeals without showing any signs of pain or emotional suffering. He
is affected by his mother s death at the beginning of the story. The whole mood, sadness, and
isolation is the fuel to Meursault s behavior, his hunger, and his emotions. Meursault blames the sun
for everything. The sun symbolizes his society and how society has more expectations of him than
others. In The Stranger, Camus incorporates the sun to symbolize inability to cope with his
emotions that stem from his failure to meet society s expectations.
Camus shows many non physical aspects to express many emotions that drives Meursault
through everyday tasks. Similar to the sun, society is generally thought to be a positive figure.
People usually regard a good strong society that firmly establishes its members with a strong,
unified code of morals as something to be desired. These morals are what drives every single
person each day through difficult and challenging tasks. Morals of a society are what makes it
stand out. In the same way, people tend to think of a bright, warm, sunny day as something good
and positive as in for a vacation or a time to relax. However, both the force of society and the force
of the sun can become overpowering. When the sun becomes overpowering it beats down on the
people, suffocating

The And The Trial Rather Than On Primary Sources
Question 1: Larson relies heavily on earlier studies of Surratt and the trial rather than on primary
sources. She uses several secondary sources to paint a vivid, well realized portrait of Mary
Surratt. In her Acknowledgments section, she specifically credits James O. Hall who perhaps did
more than anyone to advance scholarship and research into the conspiracy to kidnap then
assassinate President Lincoln. She also states that the research files housed at the James O. Hall
Research Center are the core of any historian s investigation into the complex web of John Wilkes

Larson does show to have posed her own questioning of Surratt s role. She states that new
information {is} uncovered every day (134). Mary is clearly established as not only guilty but
more highly involved than anyone has given her credit for thus far. Mary converted to Catholicism
at age sixteen and married the unstable alcoholic John Surratt, age twenty six, who died in 1862
and left her with the boardinghouse at 541 H Street (1). Through her son, John Jr., a confederate
courier (or messenger), Mary gained ties to Booth and other accomplices who stayed at the
boardinghouse often.
Question 3: Major figures in this book include, obviously Mary Surratt, along with her son John
Surratt, John Wilkes Booth, David Herold, George Azterodt, Lewis Powell, Michael O Laughlen,
Samuel Arnold, Samuel Mudd, and Edmund Spangler. Her attorney in the trial was Reverdy
Johnson though he decided to let Frederick Aiken take his place, because he believed the military
tribunal was unconstitutional. The inexperience of Aiken may have aided in Surratt s final guilty
verdict as he kept asking questions that aided in the showing her true colors. The current Secretary
of War, Sir Edwin Stanton, favored a quick military trial and execution, whereas Secretary of

The Scottsboro Boys And The Great Depression
On March 25, 1931, With the Great Depression gripping the nation after the stock market crash
of 1929, people jumped on to freight trains to travel from one city to another city in hope to search
for work. A group of whites and a group of blacks who are later called the Scottsboro boys got in a
fight on a train. The Scottsboro boyswere defending themselves and they kicked the white group
off in Jackson County. Then, two women who were on the train were trying to avoid arrest
therefore falsely accused the nine black youths (who range from the age of thirteen to nineteen
years old) of raping them. The Scottsboro boys were then arrested with assault and rape charges
added against all nine of them after the allegations were made by Victoria Price and Ruby Bates. It
was a rousing allegation in the Jim Crow South, where many whites were attempting to maintain
power just 66 years after the end of the Civil War.
On April 6, 1931, Trials begin in Scottsboro before Judge A. E. Hawkins. On April 9, a judge
sentenced the eight convicted defendants: Clarence Norris, Charlie Weems, Haywood Patterson,
Olen Montgomery, Ozie Powell, Willie Roberson, Eugene Williams, and Andy Wright; are

John Havelock s Dividend
I think Scott Goldsmith and John Havelock s reasoning in the article Dividend is the strongest
protection for the Alaska Permanent Fund works best. The first article, Guarantee the PFD, uses
the reasoning of a Nobel Laureate and economist. Although this article may seem like the most
reasonable choice because it comes with the insight of a highly acclaimed individual, a sizable
portion of the article is simply encouraging the reader to act against the new legislation. The article
tells the reader about the assets of Alaska that could be used to instead substitute for the dividend
shares from the Permanent Fund, but does not go as in depth as the second article s authors do.
Cassellius and Smith simply state facts and give little reasoning or logical explanation behind it,
leading me to prefer the other article. The third article Who owns Alaska? Our wealth was meant to
share by Charles Wohlforth, an Alaskan author and columnist, touches on personal experience and

Both authors use a wide variety of statistics and facts in their article and also explain the logic and
reasoning behind each one. They say how the Permanent Fund is the state s largest asset and
explain how we can afford to pay dividends to Alaskans while continuing to generate $2.5 billion
annually. Aside from the statistics, the authors recognize the same pattern of people turning to the
dividend whenever there is a fiscal crisis. They propose the alternatives of using the earnings
reserve, cashing out the unrealized gains, and eliminating inflation proofing which would free up
$14 billion dollars for spending. They also consider limiting the amount of the dividend paid each
year in order to consider both sides of the debate. Although their ideas may seem optimistic, their

Compare And Contrast The Odyssey And The Hobbit
Compare and Contrast As I read through Homer s The Odyssey, and J.R.R Tolkien s The Hobbit,

kind of authors would they be if they wrote the same exact story. I hope that by reading this essay

In The Hobbit the battle comes at the end of the book and in the Odyssey it is the battle of Troy that
occurs in the beginning of the story that starts our adventure. I think the major theme is that
through perseverance and hard work you can achieve great strides in completing your goal, and
that it is only by relying on others as well as yourself that those goal(s) can be achieved. During
these events we can understand some major plot similarities. Some shared plot points that I
discovered while reading. For instance both adventures are started by another source. In the
Odyssey Goddess Athena descends from the heavens after convincing her father, the Son of Cronus,
Zeus to allow Odysseus to return home. Once she arrives in Ithaca, she sets Telemachus on his
adventure to learn more information about his father whereabouts. This is like Gandalf the Gray
arriving in the Shire to set Bilbo on his mission with Thorin to reclaim the mountain from Smaug.
Another major part would be the obstacles that stand in their way. Mostly in the form of Monsters
and other beings. The Odyssey features some creatures famous in greek mythology such as the
Cyclops, Polyphemus, the beasts Scylla and Charybdis, the Sirens, and the God Helios and
Goddesses Circe and Calypso. The Hobbit features classic fantasy monsters like Giant Spiders,
Goblins, Worgs, an Elvish King, and of course a fire breathing Smaug. Both characters gain gifts

Fidel Castro As A Hero
Fidel Castro: A True Revolutionary
Every time someone says the word hero , everyone always thinks of supernatural beings with
incredible physical strength, whether they be fictional or not. Soldiers, volunteers, firefighters,
and policemen are considered to be heros but heroism does not always need strength and
wisdom to define a hero. Heros can be ordinary people that go out of their way for someone,
someone that we look up to, or, according to Joseph Campbell, a hero is someone who is willing
to sacrifice himself for others. While this causes major controversy, Fidel Castro is someone I
consider a hero, a revolutionary hero.
The Ordinary World
According to Joseph Campbell, there are 12 stages of a hero s journey, although not all 12
stages are used. The first stage of a hero s journey is the call to adventure which means that heros
must be removed from their everyday life to embark on a quest. Fidel Castro journeyed on a quest
because when he was younger, he participated in the Bogotazo, which were a series of riots in
BogotГЎ, Colombia following with the assassination of Jorge E. GaitГЎn. ( Encyclopedia of

not go through the refusal stage, he accepted the call.

Schools and Uniforms
School Uniforms Uniforms in schools are a big debate around the world. Should we have
uniforms in schools? The answer is yes because uniform help the schools. They bring to table a
great deal of help because students are getting bullied, killed, and some may not have as much as
other when shopping for clothes. Having uniforms bring safety to schools and what goes on
after school. Why do we need uniforms? Most student have their own style, but a common
argument against school uniforms is that they take away the students right to show their sense
of style, creativity and culture. Yes, school uniforms may limit what the students have to wear,
but he/she can still have their own ways of self expression in many forms. Students can still
express their style of choice by what shoes they pick, color of the shoe laces, how he or she
styles their hair, what accessories they add, jacket they wear or socks; there are many ways.
Uniforms are still versatile where they will not be breaking the dress code policy the school has
set. Just because a student can t wear the most latest Polo ,Lacrosse , or Hollister shirt or jeans to
school doesn t mean that his/her rights are taken away. School should be a place where Children
come to learn, not to scope out the latest fashion trend. Outside of school, kids can wear and show
off their unique sense of style. (A great deal of conjecture has been devoted to the relationship
between the implementation of school uniform policies and some

The adverse degradation of the environment as a result of human activities such as the disposal of

that waste disposal to the environment is carried in such a way that it does not endanger human

Paulo Coelho s The Alchemist
The Author and His/Her Times Paulo Coelho was born on August 24, 1947 in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil. When he was a boy, he was expected to become an engineer like his father. However,
Paulo wanted to be a writer and rebelled against his parents. This made his parents transport him
to a mental asylum. When Paulo was released, he was accepted into law school in 1970.
Unfortunately, he dropped out of law school to explore South America, North Africa, Mexico,
and Europe. The next years were spent living as a hippie and engaging in drugs. Then, his dream
of writing was returned after he visited Spain at the age of 36. Paulo walked more 500 miles along
a road known as The Road to Santiago de Compostela. In addition, the road was a site of Catholic...

However, the only time the word Santiago is mentioned is in the first sentence of the book: The
boy s name was Santiago . Instead, Paulo Coelho refers to Santiago as the boy . Unfortunately,
the author offers no description of appearance of Santiago. But the author does reveal that
Santiago is a shepherd. One could know that Santiago enjoys to travel all over the world. This is
why he is shepherd. One could know this by reading the following context from the book: The
people who come [to this village] have a lot of money to spend, so they can afford to travel, his
father said. Amongst us, the only ones who travel are the shepherds. Well, then I ll be a
shepherd! [the boy said] . This shows that the boy wanted to be a shepherd because of his dream
of wanting to travel. As previously explained, the boy can represent anybody in this novel. He
represents somebody who can travel all over to different places, meet new people, encounter
obstacles through life, and learn new concepts of life. Another character is the alchemist, whom
the author does not give a name at all. He is described as a horseman, on a white horse, who wears
a turban and a black kerchief covering his whole face, except for his eyes. In addition, he possesses
a rare stone known as the Philosopher s Stone, which is something that can transform any metal
into pure gold, and the Elixir of Life, which is a liquid that can cure

The 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team
People consider the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team to be one of the greatest things to happen
in U.S Olympic history. Their game against the Soviets is known as The Miracle on Ice. The
world was stunned when the United States defeated the Soviets in the semi final game of the

game is still greatly known around the world and will not be forgotten by Americans any time

They had to keep in their minds that they had to get back at the Soviets. After going undefeated in
round robin play, the United States had to head into the semi final game where they would face
the Soviets. Its almost impossible to imagine what was going through their heads. They had to
be very excited to finally get a change for revenge and beat the Soviets, but at the same time they
had to be scared to death, knowing that just two weeks before, they had gotten absolutely
dominated losing to the Soviets 10 3. In an article written by fact monster it shows the United
States through their round robin play. The first game that the United States played was against
Sweden. The United States had trailed the game 2 1 throughout the third period. The U.S. came
together and didnt give up. A last minute goal by Bill Baker salvaged a 2 2 tie. A 7 3 win over
Czechoslovakia boosted confidence. The momentum grew with victories against Norway and
Romania and a 4 2 comeback win over Germany. Germany had beaten the United States 4 1 in the
1976 Olympic games. Going undefeated in the round robin play helped the U.S. believe that they
could do it. All they had to do ws have the right mind set. As long as they focused on what they

Hmong Neighbours Essay
Cultural relativism is the process of how we understand different cultures through their own
meaning, and not how we understand these cultures through our culture. Ethnocentrism is when
you look at another culture and judge it solely based on attitudes and judgments based solely on
how we understand the different culturethrough our own cultural views. Before being socialized
into the Hmong culture, Walt had a very stereotypical view of him Hmong neighbour s. He viewed
them as stereotypical Asians that were taking over his neighbourhood and country, and often
referred to them as gooks. Walt only understood Asian people based on his own opinions of them
and through what his culture perceived them as and not by direct exposure to their culture. This
was the most important example of ethnocentrism. Walt is exposed to cultural relativismwhen he
meets Sue and is taught what the actual meaning of the Hmong lifestyle is and becomes directly
exposed to their culture. When he first receives all the gifts, he does not understand why his
neighbours are doing this, but with socialization he learns to accept the culture. By the time Walt
gets to know the family, he starts to realize that he has more in common with his neighbours than he
does with his own family. Cultural relativism most relevant when Walt is being taught the
significance and values of the Hmong culture is more than just what his own ethnocentric view of it
is.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can also be described as a culture within a culture. The Hmong are an ethnic group and
subculture of the Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai people. Walt s acculturation to understand his

family, and that there are many different ethnic groups within the larger

Organ Trafficking Research Paper
A Match Made In Your Abdomen As catchy and endearing as the title the matchmaker may
seem, it carries a darker meaning with it in today s discussion. Mr. Levy Izhak Rosenbaum, the
matchmaker , was in the lucrative business of brokering the sale of kidneys to U.S. patients who
were in dire need of them. The matchmaker would purchase the kidneys from people from Israel
at $10,000 U.S. dollars, then resale them for a much higher and profitable price. Reports say that
some may have been sold for up to $160,000 U.S. dollars. This incredible case is the first reported
organ trafficking one in the United States. The alleged decade long scheme, exposed this week by
an FBI sting, rocked the nation s transplant industry. The charges, if true, would be the first
documented case of organ trafficking in the U.S., transplant experts said Friday. (Porter and
Johnson, 2009). This operation, so to speak, was not new and had been going on for many years
prior to it s discovery. While this may... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The possibility of incompatible donors and receivers is a looming beast which not only wastes a
good organ, but can also harm the receiver. Sometimes in living donation, the blood groups of the
donor (person who is giving the organ) and recipient (person who is receiving the organ) don t

due to blood group and antibody incompatibilities. Recently however, it has become possible to

perform this in the UK. (Guys and St. Thomas Hospital, 2017) While we may want to fool
ourselves into thinking that the matchmaker and other organ distributors are using these methods.
They are not. They are only using the cheapest and easiest methods so they can have wider profit

Essay about James Lovell
James A. Lovell, captain in the United States Navy was born on March 25, 1928 in Cleveland,
Ohio. His parents are James Arthur Senior and Blanch Lovell. You may have heard of James
Lovell through the popular movie recently made named Apollo 13 . Well, there is more to learn
about Lovell than a movie about his dramatic journey back to Earth in 1970. Believe it or not he
did do quite a bit more in his life that many people do not know about. Hopefully through reading
this report you will learn many more facts about James A. Lovell.

You probably have no idea what significance the Gemini Seven mission has in American Space
history. It was a record breaking mission at the time! The astronauts were in space for two
weeks. It may not seem like very much now, but back in December of 1965 this was totally
amazing! In order to understand why this event is so important you have to imagine what it was
like back in 1965. No one had landed on the moon yet, so we were still in a space race with the
Russians. At that time we had done something that the Russians had not accomplished, and in
1965 the thought of going to space was a lot more radical than it is now. Also while they were up
in space they pioneered the first rendezvous with another space vessel. So in one mission, they and
Gemini Six had broken two records!
Lovell was launched into space for a second time on November 11, 1966. Edwin Aldrin
accompanied him. On this mission Lovell and Aldrin circumnavigated the Earth fifty nine times
in four days. What was special about this mission was the knowledge that was gained on walking
in space. During their flight, Lovell took three space walks and learned very much about the
restraints that are needed to perform a space walk. He paid very close attention to what type of
restraints worked the best for certain jobs that needed to be done on the exterior of the spacecraft.
While on one of his walks, Lovell took the

Theme Of Fate In No Country For Old Men
Fate or Free Will in No Country for Old Men
Throughout the entire movie No Country for Old Men there is a very strong theme of the
juxtaposition of fate and free will. There is endless emphasis on the decisions that characters make,
and how their decisions will ultimately affect their lives. All the characters are presented with
situations where their choice plays a role in their fate. In No Country for Old Men, the fate of
characters is determined by their actions and choices.
The first scene of the movie is set in a police station. An officer who had just apprehended Anton
Chigurh, says No worries sir, I ve got it under control over the phone. Moments after, the police
officer is dead on the floor after being strangled by Chigurh. Some people might claim that the
death of this officer was predetermined and that there was nothing he could do to prevent
himself from coming across a psychopathic killer like Anton Chigurh. However, his choice to
pursue a career as a police officer put him at a greater risk. It is important to realize that his
choices brought him to his death. In the scene of the movie, the police officer also has his back
towards Chigurh who is sitting on a bench with no restraints other than his handcuffs. The officer
s choice to turn his back to a criminal, and not properly restrain said criminal is his choice. All the
choices he made leading up to his death were the cause of his death. If he had chosen a different
career path, he would have had a much

The police in Rio de Janeiro regularly takes bribes from drug lords, abuses favela citizens, and
sells back drugs and firearms to the drug trade. Because of this, the favela becomes scared of the
police, which can make some places dangerous to be at which can make it easier for people to be
killed. The event of the tragic murder in the favela Vigario Geral was a horrid and uneducated
idea from the military police as revenge for the gunning down of four policemen. In this senseless
murder of innocent civilians, 21 people were killed in their homes. Police entered random houses,
and shot multiple people and families without reservation, sorrow, or evidence that these innocent
people had anything to do with the drug trade within the favela. A consequence of this massacre is
the enhanced mistrust of the police force in the favelas. This is because the people of the favela are
afraid that the police could come into their homes at anytime and shot everyone, or that the police
could do anything they want without repercussions for it, while the favela residents could not do

Avatars and Chat bots:
In today s world, computers are all about text input and output. Our way of communication with
computer is pointing the mouse, menus and commands. Chat bots is an end point to such text input
output kind of communication with a computer. Chat bots enables you to converse with a
computer in such a way that you usually talk to a person and it talks back ,which seems realistic

Do you think these technologies are realistic?
I think these technologies are realistic because they respond to you in a such a manner as if you
are talking to a real person. A lot of research shows that users develop more of a relationship with
a chat bot or avatar than they do with pages of text and images because they seem realistic. Chat
bots allow users to access the information as though they had someone to assist them. The chat bot
can take general language queries, give general language responses, and show users the parts of the
content they were searching for on the internet ,for example Siri technology. I tried a conversation

Death Of Socrates Research Paper
The Truth Behind The Death of Socrates
The government has always had regulations that must be followed. One of these cases was in
Athens, 399 BC, confronting the trial and execution of Socrates. This particular situation focused
on the violations of the government s devine rules and expectations; however, there is more than
meets the eye as to why the execution took place. Socrates execution was brought upon by his
thoughts and teachings, the conflicting ideas of the government, and his refusal of a trial.
The initial reason for the execution of Socrates was his idea about the Athenian government and
said corruption of the youths. The article, The Trial and Execution of Socrates: 399 bce, talks of
Socrates view of the democratic Athenian government saying, He felt it did not go far enough in
promoting ethical governance of the citizenry (The Trial and Execution of Socrates: bce). Socrates
put down the government s leadership in the community and proposed his own ideas to those who
would listen. A large majority of his followers were young men whose minds were... Show more

During the Athenian rule, most people had only the ideas that the government placed in their
minds. Anyone who believed otherwise, as Socrates had, would be punished. Moreover, as told in
the article, The Greeks and America s founding fathers, part 2: Learning what not to do, Socrates
was convicted to death for charges against the state of atheism and misleading the youths
(Sandefur). Socrates objection of the government s beliefs and teachings to the young men of

Causes of American Poverty and Possible Solutions Essay
Poverty is not a simple issue. You cannot ask a question about poverty and get one universal
response. There are many conflicting ideas about what poverty is, and more importantly, where it
comes from. The make up of American society shows that so much in life can depend on one s
family. Having opportune circumstances can land people jobs, but having the opposite can also
perpetuate the depression and reality of povertyfor others. When people have reasons not to seize
their days, they might sink deeper and deeper into the belief that they cannot truly escape poverty.
People need to have the proper assistance to breakaway from poverty and lead successful lives.

This money would be so much better spent on education or self help programs. Services that have
the future of the poor in mind are where government benefits need to be attached. If poor children
can be the first in their family to obtain a legitimate education, they can help turn their family
around. The furthering of these children s education can lead to financial aid in college and a job
upon graduating. New generations of young people attaining an excellent education can inspire
other children in similar situations. Again, this requires a proper allocation of support.
Conversely, according to Schiller (2008), the Flawed Character theory, Sees individuals as in full
control of their socioeconomic status (p. 66). This over generalized statement should not be
properly attributed to poor children in desolate living conditions. Being a poor individual does not
mean you are permanently stuck there, but it can hinder your development. Children are not
seemingly in full control of their status when they are told by their parents to live off the
government. This ideal could make children more than likely to heed this ill advised lesson.
Children being brought up on the belief that less effort is better would be a true testament to the
ineptitude of this system. On the other hand, with money being spent on young people for
education, the control of their lives increases much more. The belief that being poor will deny any
opportunities can be greatly

The protagonist and narrator, Watanabe, is remembering his past as a university student, while in a plane bound to Hamburg. From the beginning of the novel, we feel that the different conceptions of what is to live to Watanabe and Naoko will make their lovestory impossible. The distance is unbounded between the two characters in their platonic relation, and take a geographical dimension early in the book. However Watanabe does not hesitate. If he is uncertain about everything in his life, he want to live and is not absorbed by Naoko s death drives. Likewise he is not attracted by the inhumanity of Nagasawa. Every characters of the book are allegoric of Japanese and widely more generally human beeing. Here is the strength of Murakami s work, beyond a very Japanese context firmly anchored in student turmoils of the Sixties in Tokyo, story and characters are universal. Main subjects like suicide, responsibility, depression and aspiration to live fully resonate in the reader s mind, and the very Japanese sensibility that emerges from the work is transcended by ... • 5. Austin Vs Hart H.L.A. Hart first takes issue with John Austin first point. John Austin believed in a many species of commands. Hart disagrees with Austin s statement completely. Hart believes that the idea that the law consists only of directives and orders which are followed by possible punishments do not help to explain the current legal systems. Hart finds value in the type of laws called power conferring rules. The rules offer less threats and actually establish a framework for which citizen can understand and define their individual rights and obligations they have. Hart also considers other types of laws. Hart views laws that are established to identify the limitation and the powers of the judicial and legislative branches. He argues that it is impossible to view these laws as mere orders backed by threats... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hart views primary rules as rules that require actions that will ultimately create duties and obligations. For example, let say you go to Wal Mart and buy two hundred dollars worth of groceries, but you then decide to walk out of the store without paying. You can reasonably expect that there is a law requiring you to pay. In contrast, secondary rules are used to establish procedures which allow modification of primary rules. Hart envisions a world of just primary rules, but says that without secondary rules the world would lack true understanding of the law and ultimately would be faced with many challenges. Hart defines three problems that can be remedied with three different types of secondary rules which include: rules of recognition, rule of change and rule of adjudication. Of those three Hart believes that the rule of recognition. The rule of recognition tells us basically how to establish and implement a law. In the modern legal systems that is the most important contribution that arises from the rule of recognition is it allows us to determine the validity of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Using at least two analytical techniques from E301, analyze and compare your two texts in terms of their creativity and literariness, drawing on material from both parts of the module. In this paper I will analyze and compare a literary text and an everyday text, in terms of their creativity and literariness. I chose Philip Larkin s (1964) poem, Self s the man (see Appendix, Text 1), as the literary text for analysis because it is not only smooth and pleasing to the eye and mind that it seems effortless to read and contain within one s self but also because it arouses so many emotions which makes it ideal for analysis. In Self s the man Larkin (1964), is being cynical towards relationships ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In my analysis, I will first apply Jakobson s (1960) methodology, stylistics approach and Carter s (1997) criteria of literariness to the two texts and then contrast them with illustrations in terms of interpretative schemata. My intention in doing so is to highlight some of the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches and also modes in which they interact to better comprehend the nature of creativity and literariness. On the graphological level, in Text 1, the noticeable attributes are the traditional lineation, stanza divisions of poetry, and the presence of standard punctuation. The poem has 8 stanzas in all and each stanza consists of 4 lines. This creates a set rhythmic pattern, particularly in conjunction with the rhyme scheme. Text 2, on the other hand, on a graphic level, uses full capitalization in order to emphasize every letter in the ad and make it look trim and tidy. The headline uses larger, capital and bold letters to draw readers attention and make them curious about what the advertisement mainly has to say, leading them to continue on reading unconsciously by arousing their curiosity and desire to know more about the product and subsequently persuading them to buy it. Moreover, Text 2, illustrates graphological deviation, by using solid background colors, and a brilliant diamond ring to focus all the reader s attention to. On the phonic level, Text 1 has little ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Literary Analysis Of The Painted Bird Oyuki Paniagua Professor Brienza Larsen English 1B July 21 2017 Different It s hard to imagine having your entire family murdered as a young kid, living in a century where war attacks were in every corner. This was the life of the young boy in the story The Painted Bird. Although the author, Jerzy Kosinski, never confirmed the book as an autobiography, it was easy to feel the pain as if he experienced it himself. The Painted Bird is a heartfelt novel that gives us all a glimpse into the dark reality of our past. The author is able to walk us through what I believe was his life. We are lead through a series of trauma the young boy experienced. The boy shares the dark reality that anyone that is that vulnerable can be tortured, abused and killed by anyone, including family. The boy s tragic life is a testimony of how terrifying life was like during the world war. Nevertheless, it seems as though life was just a bit tougher for him because he was different. Life can be difficult for many people, but it is undeniable that being different can affect the way others view you. *Such life was Kosinskis, Being different than the people around him made him a target. Through the juxtaposition of childish innocence and the most brutal forms of fallen adult experience, such works sum up the universal trauma of war in a myth of unrivaled concentration and clarity. (Houghton) In the beginning of the story, the author introduces us to the life he was exposed to. We learn ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Finding yourself when everyone around you is changing, morphing is one of that things that most people struggle with their entire life and sometimes it defines us and other times leaves us a pickle on a big mac. Please Ignore Vera Dietz is a novel about Vera the main protagonist going on with daily life like nothing happened after her best friend Charlie dies. This novel communicates the idea that you are always not the problem and that you need to step back and look at what you have, and self acceptance is the key to all your problems. Contemplation is a commanding thought; it can make things better or worse. Veras first big thought of contemplation is when her mother left the family, and weather or not it was her fault. It haunts her father that Sindy left and he dwells on her in the most minuate ways, like keeping her clothes in the closet or her class china wear on the cabinet. Vera always wonders if its her fault for her mother leaving because her mother in Veras words never wanted her. She is also confused on what she wants to do with her life after college, does she want to become a vet or just give up her dreams completely because everyone thinks that she is just going to become a stripper just like her mother. I struggle with the same things everyday wondering if my mother would have done if she didn t have me at such a young age. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These payment structures have led to concerns about undersupply of needed services (Virtual Mentor, 2006). The quality of health care is directly affected by the system costs. The cost of health care has always been a major concern in the United States. With managed care systems and pay for performance approaches cost does directly affect the quality. The major questions that surround this issue is are physicians being paid fairly for their services, and are the services deserving of the costs associated with it. These questions may not be fully answered to the preference of those involved with health care. The cost of health care will always be a debatable question but in essence there needs to be some type of commission that can fairly determine cost of health care services so that all parties involved are compensated fairly. A physician takes an oath to provide quality care to their patients no matter the cost but the physician also deserves to be compensated fairly for the services they do provide. According to the AMA, fair and ethical PFP programs are committed to improved patient care as their most important mission. • 17. The Blind Side By John Lee Hancock On the surface, The Blind Side may seem like a great feel good movie, but once the movie is analyzed, it s apparent that the movie is filled with blatant stereotypes as well as racism. The Blind Side, based off of a true story, shows the protagonist escaping poverty against all odds and growing up to be very successful with the help of a select few. Although some may argue that escaping poverty and becoming successful like Michael did is very possible this connotation of escaping poverty depicted in the movie is highly unrealistic, contributes to derogative stereotypes, and would also be very unlikely to happen in real life. The Blind Side, a feel good sports drama intended for everyone, especially young kids and teenagers, was released on November 20th in 2009 and was directed by John Lee Hancock. The Blind side was very successful in the box office, grossing hundreds of millions of dollars and quickly became the movie to see of the thanksgiving holiday season. The Blind Side starred Sandra Bullock, playing the role of an extremely wealthy white woman. Her character, Mrs. Tuohy, a feisty, passionate and caring Christian woman, took in a homeless African Americankid, Michael Oher. Despite the success of the movie in the box offices, the movie received very mixed reviews from critics. • 18. The Purpose Of Fractional Distillation Discussion The purpose of this experiment is to identify two compounds from an unknown given liquid by separating them into three components using fractional distillation. Distillation is the act of heating and cooling liquids in order to obtain a pure sample. There are two main types of distillation: simple distillation and fractional distillation. Simple distillation is the most basic form of a distillation. This method is more helpful when the separation between a liquid and a solid needs to happen or between two liquids with boiling points that have a difference of about 50В°C or higher. Fractional distillation is similar to simple distillation; however, it is used to separate two liquids with similar boiling points. Fractional distillation works by first heating up the solution of the two liquids. Once the solution begins to boil, the unknown compound that has a lower boiling point will evaporate and rise into a distillation apparatus. The newly formed gas will travel through the apparatus until it is cooled down, at which point the gas will not be able to maintain the energy needed for this specific phase, and will begin to condense back into a liquid. The same process will occur with the second liquid, the only difference being that it needed a higher temperature in order to transform into a gas. The two new liquids will each have a higher percentage of the unknown compound, thus making them have a higher purity rate. The second technique that will be used to identify ... As a result of urban sprawl, Americans rely heavily on personal vehicles to travel to work or other destinations. This is leading to a sedentary life style for the public as they take to their cars to travel to their destination. The public s perception of the environments in which they live in are likely influencing their behaviors resulting in their dependance on personal vehicles. (Wahlgren, 2011). Through the implementation of mixed land use, residential density, street connectivity, and physical infrastructure the community will establish itself as an area that is closely associated with other areas viewed as being highly walk able for both residents and visitors (Wahlgren, 2011). However, current designs intended to address safety needs for motorists and pedestrians are at odds with each other. Community street design is evident of an out dated design guidance on roadways. • 23. The Effects Of Eugenic Sterilization Eugenics Sterilization, developed by an eminent scientist, Francis Galton, is the science of improving the qualities of the human species or a human population by controlling breeding to increase the occurrence of desirable heritable characteristic traits and decrease the occurrence of undesirable characteristic traits or genetical defects (Bergman, 2000). Eugenic sterilizationrefers to the involuntary sterilizationof certain categories of individuals without their need for consent by those subjected to the procedure (Pozgar, 2012, p. 411). Eugenic Sterilization has ruined thousands of lives and impacted individual in multiple ways. Individuals classified as mentally deficient, feeble minded, epileptic, promiscuous, sexual deviants, or persons classified as habitual criminals were mainly targeted (Pozgar, 2012, p. 411). Eugenicists argued degenerate traits tainted society through the reproduction of the lowest class and sterilization was to keep the handicapped from perpetuating themselves (Kaelber, 2014). In addition, eugenicists also argued that feeble minded individuals were believed to be financial burdens to society by overcrowding prisons, hospitals and living off welfare (Kaelber, 2014). Eugenic Sterilization was seen as a way to prevent the spending of tax dollars on the feeble minded (Kaelber, 2014). These arguments allowed Eugenics to become an acceptable practice. Advocates believed that getting rid of the feeble minded and mentally deficient would decrease the undesirable characteristic traits within the human gene pool and ultimately improve the human population (Kaelber, 2014). The very first eugenic sterilization law was passed in 1919 but it was never put to use (Kaelber, 2014). Many worried that the law was unconstitutional and there the State feared putting it into practice (Kaelber, 2014). The landmark 1927 United States Supreme Court case of Buck Vs. Bell served as a catalyst for many eugenic sterilization programs across the Country (Scott, 2015). In 1929, The North Carolina General Assembly passed new sterilization laws (Kaelber, 2014). In this process of achieving justice, those highly impacted by these wrong actions are often ignored; the battle between the offender and the Crown often makes the victim, a mere spectator. The Canadian Criminal JusticeSystem is continuing to do its best in addressing the dissatisfaction victims feel towards the authorities. However, study of literature shows that although victim rights have come a long way and are continuing to develop further, they are not successful in addressing the concerns of the victim. The article, Crime... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Victims often complain about not having enough information about their case and confusion regarding what rights they are entitled to (McDonald Grossman, 2014, p. 10). The reason victims feel this way is because they do not know how to access the programs set in place for them. Proper measures should be taken to allow clear communication between the Crown, victim, and lawyers. For instance, Mandi Gray, a sexual assault survivor, demanded eight thousand dollars in restitution money so she could hire a lawyer because she felt defenseless during the trial. Whereas, the national criminal lawyers association were not in favor of the offender paying such amount and argued that adequate support services are already available for victims (McGillivray, 2017). Incidences like these are likely to paint a negative picture of victim status in Canadian Justice System and decrease the number of victims accessing these resources. Moreover, it shows interest towards being more concerned about protecting the rights of an offender, rather than the victim who has been wronged. Also, if the information regarding these programs is easily available, it will likely increase the rate of victims making use of them. Therefore, to eliminate future issues like these, support services should expand their options available for victims and more counseling services should be provided to explain victims their rights beforehand. The Theme Of Absurdism In The Stranger By Albert Camus Arul P Saravanan Ball World Lit/ Writ 27 November, 2017 Too Hot For You Albert Camus wrote The Stranger to express absurdism within society by having Meursault, the main character, suffers many ordeals without showing any signs of pain or emotional suffering. He is affected by his mother s death at the beginning of the story. The whole mood, sadness, and isolation is the fuel to Meursault s behavior, his hunger, and his emotions. Meursault blames the sun for everything. The sun symbolizes his society and how society has more expectations of him than others. In The Stranger, Camus incorporates the sun to symbolize inability to cope with his emotions that stem from his failure to meet society s expectations. Camus shows many non physical aspects to express many emotions that drives Meursault through everyday tasks. Similar to the sun, society is generally thought to be a positive figure. People usually regard a good strong society that firmly establishes its members with a strong, unified code of morals as something to be desired. These morals are what drives every single person each day through difficult and challenging tasks. Morals of a society are what makes it stand out. In the same way, people tend to think of a bright, warm, sunny day as something good and positive as in for a vacation or a time to relax. Her attorney in the trial was Reverdy Johnson though he decided to let Frederick Aiken take his place, because he believed the military tribunal was unconstitutional. • 35. The Scottsboro Boys And The Great Depression On March 25, 1931, With the Great Depression gripping the nation after the stock market crash of 1929, people jumped on to freight trains to travel from one city to another city in hope to search for work. A group of whites and a group of blacks who are later called the Scottsboro boys got in a fight on a train. The Scottsboro boyswere defending themselves and they kicked the white group off in Jackson County. Then, two women who were on the train were trying to avoid arrest therefore falsely accused the nine black youths (who range from the age of thirteen to nineteen years old) of raping them. The Scottsboro boys were then arrested with assault and rape charges added against all nine of them after the allegations were made by Victoria Price and Ruby Bates. It was a rousing allegation in the Jim Crow South, where many whites were attempting to maintain power just 66 years after the end of the Civil War. On April 6, 1931, Trials begin in Scottsboro before Judge A. E. Hawkins. On April 9, a judge sentenced the eight convicted defendants: Clarence Norris, Charlie Weems, Haywood Patterson, Olen Montgomery, Ozie Powell, Willie Roberson, Eugene Williams, and Andy Wright; are sentenced to death by electrocution. • 37. John Havelock s Dividend I think Scott Goldsmith and John Havelock s reasoning in the article Dividend is the strongest protection for the Alaska Permanent Fund works best. The first article, Guarantee the PFD, uses the reasoning of a Nobel Laureate and economist. Although this article may seem like the most reasonable choice because it comes with the insight of a highly acclaimed individual, a sizable portion of the article is simply encouraging the reader to act against the new legislation. The article tells the reader about the assets of Alaska that could be used to instead substitute for the dividend shares from the Permanent Fund, but does not go as in depth as the second article s authors do. Cassellius and Smith simply state facts and give little reasoning or logical explanation behind it, leading me to prefer the other article. The third article Who owns Alaska? Both authors use a wide variety of statistics and facts in their article and also explain the logic and reasoning behind each one. They say how the Permanent Fund is the state s largest asset and explain how we can afford to pay dividends to Alaskans while continuing to generate $2.5 billion annually. Aside from the statistics, the authors recognize the same pattern of people turning to the dividend whenever there is a fiscal crisis. They propose the alternatives of using the earnings reserve, cashing out the unrealized gains, and eliminating inflation proofing which would free up $14 billion dollars for spending. They also consider limiting the amount of the dividend paid each year in order to consider both sides of the debate. Compare And Contrast The Odyssey And The Hobbit Compare and Contrast As I read through Homer s The Odyssey, and J.R.R Tolkien s The Hobbit, I immediately noticed several similarities between the two. Of course not only were their things that they both shared in common, but also things that set them apart from each other. I mean what kind of authors would they be if they wrote the same exact story. I hope that by reading this essay you gain a better understanding of both books as well as what they have in common and what is different between them. By the end you should be able to identify the similarities and differences between both of their journeys as well as between most of the characters in this book. In The Hobbit the battle comes at the end of the book and in the Odyssey it is the battle of Troy that occurs in the beginning of the story that starts our adventure. I think the major theme is that through perseverance and hard work you can achieve great strides in completing your goal, and that it is only by relying on others as well as yourself that those goal(s) can be achieved. During these events we can understand some major plot similarities. Some shared plot points that I discovered while reading. For instance both adventures are started by another source. In the Odyssey Goddess Athena descends from the heavens after convincing her father, the Son of Cronus, Zeus to allow Odysseus to return home. Once she arrives in Ithaca, she sets Telemachus on his adventure to learn more information about his father whereabouts. This is like Gandalf the Gray arriving in the Shire to set Bilbo on his mission with Thorin to reclaim the mountain from Smaug. Another major part would be the obstacles that stand in their way. Mostly in the form of Monsters and other beings. The Odyssey features some creatures famous in greek mythology such as the Cyclops, Polyphemus, the beasts Scylla and Charybdis, the Sirens, and the God Helios and Goddesses Circe and Calypso. The Hobbit features classic fantasy monsters like Giant Spiders, Goblins, Worgs, an Elvish King, and of course a fire breathing Smaug. Both characters gain gifts that ... Fidel Castro As A Hero Fidel Castro: A True Revolutionary Every time someone says the word hero , everyone always thinks of supernatural beings with incredible physical strength, whether they be fictional or not. Soldiers, volunteers, firefighters, and policemen are considered to be heros but heroism does not always need strength and wisdom to define a hero. Heros can be ordinary people that go out of their way for someone, someone that we look up to, or, according to Joseph Campbell, a hero is someone who is willing to sacrifice himself for others. While this causes major controversy, Fidel Castro is someone I consider a hero, a revolutionary hero. The Ordinary World According to Joseph Campbell, there are 12 stages of a hero s journey, although not all 12 stages are used. The first stage of a hero s journey is the call to adventure which means that heros must be removed from their everyday life to embark on a quest. Students can still express their style of choice by what shoes they pick, color of the shoe laces, how he or she styles their hair, what accessories they add, jacket they wear or socks; there are many ways. Ethnocentrism is when you look at another culture and judge it solely based on attitudes and judgments based solely on how we understand the different culturethrough our own cultural views. Before being socialized into the Hmong culture, Walt had a very stereotypical view of him Hmong neighbour s. He viewed them as stereotypical Asians that were taking over his neighbourhood and country, and often referred to them as gooks. Walt only understood Asian people based on his own opinions of them and through what his culture perceived them as and not by direct exposure to their culture. This was the most important example of ethnocentrism. Walt is exposed to cultural relativismwhen he meets Sue and is taught what the actual meaning of the Hmong lifestyle is and becomes directly exposed to their culture. No one had landed on the moon yet, so we were still in a space race with the Russians. At that time we had done something that the Russians had not accomplished, and in 1965 the thought of going to space was a lot more radical than it is now. There are many conflicting ideas about what poverty is, and more importantly, where it comes from. The make up of American society shows that so much in life can depend on one s family. Conversely, according to Schiller (2008), the Flawed Character theory, Sees individuals as in full control of their socioeconomic status (p. 66). This over generalized statement should not be properly attributed to poor children in desolate living conditions.
