Jaye Pont s Study
Jaye Pont is an Australian potter by trade and achieved a PhD in ancient history (Catchpole, 2004). In
1998, in 2001 Pont joined the Anglo American Project in Pompeii where she was able to make
significant discoveries about their everyday life that enhances our knowledge and understanding of
everyday life in Pompeii. Jaye Pont is well known in her field for the contributions she has made
regarding Pompeii s trading behaviours through the medium of pottery and has challenge
preconceived beliefs and have allowed for new understandings of life in Pompeii. Pont disproved
previous theories concerning overseas ceramic trading and, as a result there was need to revaluate
Pompeii s role in trade and commerce during the time before 79AD (Zarmati, 2005). Pont s findings
were significant to understanding life in Pompeii and her conclusions have been recognised in
numerous scholarly articles, therefore publicising her findings and enhancing the public s knowledge
of Pompeii. Jaye Pont was at the forefront of archaeological investigation at Pompeii and has
contributed significantly to our understanding of this ancient city today. Jaye Pont has made ... Show

Pottery is very beneficial and advantageous to archaeologists as it is a very common and widespread
product that leads us to have a greater understanding about the everyday life of the area inhabitants.
Pottery is one of the most common artefacts in ancient sites. Once broken, unlike glass and metal, it
cannot be recycled. This makes it very useful to archaeologists, said Pont. Pont made the conclusion
that the red slip pottery was used by the Pompeian s as tableware with the main purpose of serving
food and drink given its characteristically glossy surface. By dipping ceramics in liquid clay and later
firing it in an oxygenating kiln is how this gloss is created (Kalnins, 2004) (see figure

Developing the Lexical Acquistion of a Language
Acquisition of language is often a very difficult task that requires time and commitment. To learn
language one needs to focus and various aspects of language that include reading, writing, listening,
speaking, and pronunciation. Perhaps one of the most difficult and time consuming tasks that exist in
language learning is lexical acquisition. To accurately express oneself, a large lexical inventory is
required. Vocabulary learning is accomplished by many different methods; memorization and multiple
exposures are required and, in addition, one needs to learn a word s collocations and syntactic
constraints. There has been much research done that focuses on methods of teaching vocabulary and
extensive reading is one such method.
Extensive reading is a method of reading instruction where students are encouraged to read large
quantity of texts in order to promote understanding. There is also an underlying goal that involves
getting students to enjoy reading. There several aspects to extensive reading and principles have even
been given by certain researchers. In their article, Day Bamford (2002) introduced 10 principles that
are related to extensive reading. These principles include: the reading material must be
comprehensible, there must be a variety of material with many topics, the students have choice in their
reading material, the students read as much as possible, the purpose of reading should be for pleasure
and general understanding, the reading should be its

Cultural Case Study
The cultural case study I have chosen focuses on the protection of indigenous and cultural rights
within Australia. Lack of knowledge in the wider community of Indigenous cultural heritage has
created confusion, misunderstandings and inequality which have all continually placed pressure on the
Indigenous heritage. Years of European misperceptions and indifferences have adversely affected
them. Thus, I have chosen this case study to increase my awareness and understanding of the
Indigenous community as well as their beliefs and systems. I would further like to understand how the
law affects the indigenous culture and how it responds to issues regarding the rights of native
Australians.
The case study is essentially about a marine sacred site ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although Magamarra and the Blyth River are registered as sacred sites, the physical condition and
integrity of them is under threat from unauthorised use by commercial fishing vessels. There is a
natural barramundi habitat in the estuarine waters of the Blyth River and the only way to enter these
waters is through Magamarra. Illegal fishing activities at Magamarra are the most substantial threat to
the condition and integrity of the site. There have been several reported recurrent problems with
commercial fishermen disobeying customary laws and entering the site at night. In April of 2011 a
commercial barramundi fisherman was fined $5,000 for setting up a gill net at Magamarra. After the
court case, a Traditional Custodian observed that the illegal fishing appeared to have stopped, but
questioned for how long. The physical condition and integrity of Magamarra is vital to the cultural
wellbeing of the Guwowura and Mareang A Jirra people. One Traditional Custodian explained that if
Magamarra is destroyed through misuse, then his grandchildren will have no

Reading Books And Reading
Despite the growing power and spread of the Internet, there are still some reasons that I often prefer to
read books. As a growing adult I have really become more interested in self help books and books that
teachers have written that are really connectable to my daily experience within life. I find that this
experience in finding these types of books really help me to have great experience with reading and
really enjoy reading. The only aspect of reading or bad memory that I can remember about reading is
during high school when I was forced to read books that I did not like and did not enjoy. I found that I
would not read the book and this made me a bad reader within the eyes of the curriculum. After that
point in high school I gave up on reading until coming to Denver Colorado where my teachers
inspired me with teacher information and reading classes where I really got to establish myself as a
reader and a writer.
Describe where you have lived and what your schools were like. My name is Alexis McCormick, and
I have been a student here at the college since August 17, 2015. I moved to Littleton Colorado on
August 15, 2015. I am originally from Rapid City, South Dakota. This is a small town and the
classroom sizing was very small as well. I remember my overall learning to read experience being
very successful throughout my elementary and middle school years. I love Colorado and going to
school here, however the transition from a small hometown school to a big city with

Zhou Yu’s Train by Sun Zhou is a story about a woman, Zhou...
Zhou Yu s Train by Sun Zhou is a story about a woman, Zhou Yu, who is torn between her mind and
heart. (Havis, 2004) She has to choose to stay either with the poet Chen Qing or the vet Zhang Qiang,
but the choice is not easy for her. Therefore she continues her travels with train until she finds the
answer of this question in the face of the death. Zhou Yu s Train sets the question was her love
relationship with Zhang Qiang a reality, represents the new status of poets and women in Chinese
society in Modern China.
The Zhou Yu s story is a paradox, which question the reality of existence of her relationship with Chen
Qing. Firstly, there is an emotional or physical distance between them that is not typical for couples
who are together. For ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Then as a contra argument Xiu finds the broken piece of the bowl in the train which symbolizes the
broken love as a proof that this love existed, and the final scene of the lake proving that Zhou Yu also
existed. In conclusion, by challenging the notion of existence of such relationship, it is created the
feeling that their love is on the verge between reality and dreams.
Secondly, the story challenges the problem of the changed status of the poets in China. Although they
were highly respected in early Chinese dynasties, poets in the 20th century as part of the Chinese
intelligence, which is not favoured by the Communist party, became highly unpopular in China.
(King, 2004) In the movie for example no one knows who Chen Qing is and although Zhou Yu helps
him to make popular the event, no one comes. Such thing may be consequence of the fact that poetry
was regarded during this time only as an instrument of the political party for propaganda and that
society did not indulged in any kind of art except the traditional and communist. (King, 2004)
Moreover, Chen Qing is not rich, in contrary to the great Confucius who lived richly, he only works in
a small library and lives simple life, judging from his bead and living conditions. Furthermore, poetry
other than propaganda is hard to be published and authors have to invest their own money in order
their book to be printed which is a paradox when in today s societies they live poorly. (King, 2004) In

Whale Rider Reflection
The film Whale Rider takes A large portion of the film fixates on the dynamic of this connection
amongst Koro, the tribal chief, and his granddaughter Paikea. Paikea respects her grandfather, and has
a puzzling association with the tribe s ancestry; her namesake, Paikea the Whale Rider, travelled from
Hawaii to New Zealand on the back of a whale. Paikea spends the most of the film trying to prove her
worth and gain respect from her grandfather. Unlike many of the other tribal youth, she reveres the
ancestral tribe s dances and songs, and becomes highly skilled in both. She is exceptionally proud of
her heritage and is finally given the opportunity to prove herself when a pod of whales become
beached on the local shore. Mirroring her namesake, Paikea rides the largest whale back into the
waves, saving the pod from disaster and death. At the end of the film, her strength, courage, and
supernatural appointment as future chief is enough to convince Koro of her leadership abilities, and a
new generation of Maori is given hope and guidance for the future. Maori traditions take central stage
throughout the film. Each of the film s characters struggles with these customs. For instance, Koro is
more reluctant to give up or bend traditional rules and practices. From the outset of the film, Koro is
primarily concerned with the continuation of the royal bloodline via a grandson. When only his
granddaughter survives, he is not only bitter towards her, but he is also preoccupied with remedying
the situation for the sake of his people. He is not only adamant in upholding the patriarchal leadership
tradition, but the tribe chief dynamic, in general, that many in his society have abandoned in practice
and principle. Still clinging to this way of life, he and members of the elder generation take action in
an attempt to fill the leadership void. At one point, it is decided by the elder council that a school,
dedicated to the traditional teachings and cultural elements once so vital to Maori society and
leadership, specifically, be opened to the male youths of the community. Here, Koro may conduct a
formal search for the next tribal chief, while adequately equipping all male candidates with the
knowledge and practice of many

their promises of flexibility into concrete deals. Pascal Lamy, the Director General of the WTO

The Power of Freedom
An Indispensable Right There are a variety of birds that make wonderful house pets, and most of these
birds don t mind living in a cage. However, this is not the case for the cockatiel. When the cockatiel is
not able to fly freely and have social interaction with other birds of its type, it becomes depressed and
plucks out all of its feathers, one by one. It longs for freedom. The kind of freedom it would get out in
the wild. According to Longman s Advanced American Dictionary, the word freedom is defined as the
right to do what you want without being controlled or restricted by anyone (643). There are two
authors that were discussed in EFL 095 that use the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1894, Kate Chopin wrote The Story of an Hour, to describe the constraints placed on women during
the 19th century. During the 19th century women didn t have rights, their only roles were to be wives
and mothers. Women didn t have any rights to make decisions, have freedom of speech or work
outside the home. It is an obstacle in the face of liberty that everyone should have, but only men
reaped the benefits during this time. However, in the story, the main character, Mrs. Mallard
experiences freedom for a short period of time. Mrs. Mallard receives news that her husband Bently
was killed in a train accident and her sister Josephine and friend take precautions to share the news
because they know it will bring on deep sorrow. In contrast, the death of her husband brings on a new
feeling that others might consider inappropriate after the death of a spouse. Kate Chopin shows this in
the short story:
She abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and
over under her breath: free, free, free! (Chopin 327).
Death of a love one is expected to cause sadness, but in this case, it was for a short period of time. The
premature death of Mr. Mallard causes Mrs. Mallard to start to notice the beauty of her environment,
which possibly had gone unnoticed for a long time.
She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all quiver with the new
spring life. The delicious breath of

Fueled By The National Momentum For Social Reform During
Fueled by the national momentum for social reform during the post World War II era, the United
Kingdom restructured their health care system in 1946 to a socialized form where the federal
government both regulates and administers universal health care to its residents through the National
Health Service program. General income taxes fund the entirety of this health care program and the
single payer nature of this system has eliminated the need for insurance companies since the federal
government directly finances every British resident s medical bills at the time of their treatment. The
National Health Service provides health care coverage for all 64.6 million residents of Great Britain

As the name implies, the National Health Service provides health care services to only permanent
residents and any international visitors, including British born citizens, must pay a package rate for
health care treatment that the government predetermines. The Washington Post s assessment of Great
Britain s health care system reveals that this package rate that foreign visitors must pay for basic
medical procedures is significantly inexpensive when compared with other industrialized countries.
According to the gov.uk website, this National Health Service even provides immediate coverage to
new immigrants by making them pay a surcharge as part of their immigration application to enter into
the system. Since a majority of health care treatments in Britain are fully covered by the National
Health Service, T.R. Reid in the PBS documentary, Sick Around the World , explains that no British
residents fall into bankruptcy due to an inability to pay medical bills. The nhs.uk website further
highlights the wide scope of health care coverage that the National Health Service provides by
explaining how patients receive inpatient and outpatient hospital care, physician services, preventive
treatments, diagnostic screenings, pediatric care, emergency care, nursing facilities, long term care,
and end of life care without any out of pocket payments. Despite being one of the top five of the

Child Behavior And Language Assessment
The postulate we chose to research is from the social participation frame of reference. It states that if
routine is provided for difficult or disorganizing activities, children will develop calmer and more
cooperative behaviors during those activities (Olson, 2010). When researching for an article that either
supported or refuted the postulate, Family Centered Intervention for Young Children at risk for
Language and Behavior Problems was found. The study was initiated by dividing forty one randomly
selected children, ages 3 5 years, with potential language and behavioral difficulties into a control
group or intervention group receiving adult support (Chao, Bryan, Burstein, Ergul, 2006). The purpose
was to explore the impact parent involvement and routines have on the development of socially
acceptable behavior and language in children (Chao et al., 2006). Parents were asked to rate various
aspects of their child, such as motor skills and behavior, then decide activities in the Child Behavior
and Language Assessment (CBLA) to focus on and review intermittently in a log to help conclude if
the intervention was beneficial or not (Chao et al., 2006). The intervention was based on the reviews
and opinions of the parents and occasional professional observation. CBLA is comprised of
assessments of children s language and behavior, and routine based activities assisting the
establishment of language and ideal behavior (Chao et al., 2006). The

Comparison Between Raphael And Leonardo Da Vinci s Last...
Art is a conversation between the artist and the audience, and through which the artwork is the
medium between both. The artist, as the author of the piece, generates the message, plans the piece,
and executes it to the best of his abilities. The audience, on their part, uses past experiences and
knowledge of the artist and artwork to interpret the work,(which interestedly can lead to multiple
conclusions of the work that are far distant from the artist s original understanding). Then there is the
artwork itself: it is the passive participant whose influences beyond that of the artist and the audience
is time. Throughout history, this has been the case Raphael and his Galatea, and Leonardo da Vinci
and his Last Supper but in more recent times, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is done through the process by which he created the piece: he generated the dimensions of each
block according to a mathematical premise and then he sent the plan to a factory to have the blocks
fabricated. Through this process he had ten identical blocks made. Thus, the piece maintains only a
distant connection to the artist who created it, and resembles that of the mass production in which the
industrial designer creates a general plan that the factory workers then replicate repeatedly. This
elimination of the artist s involvement is also illustrated in the title of the piece , Untitled : through the
intentional act of not giving the piece a name, Judd therefore refuses to impose any preconstructed
view on the piece. By eliminating himself from the conversation as much as possible, Judd focuses the
attention toward the interaction between the piece and the audience, and particularly the piece. Of
course, it is questionable whether the artist truly removed himself, and his views, from the work.
Establishing now that no exterior influences beyond the process of art are affecting the piece, I now
consider the interior influences of the piece: that is, the elements of art and

Hot Tub Research Paper
When the weather turns cold, conventional wisdom prescribes preparing your outdoor items for the
winter. Does that include your hot tub? According to Hot Tub Outlet, Southwest Littleton s favorite
source for premium hot tubs at affordable prices, they suggest leaving your hot tub running throughout
the winter with a few smart preparations. But the choice is ultimately yours, and if you decide to drain
it, you must take special care to winterize it properly. No matter which option you choose, here are
three things you must do for your hot tub as winter rolls around: Check For Leaks Damage: Cracks in
the hot tub can allow critters seeking refuge from the cold to move in, which is not only a nuisance it
also puts your equipment at risk. Rodents can cause damage by chewing wires and other expensive
parts, leaving you to foot the repair bill. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

the winter, to prevent corrosion and other expensive damage. Keep the Hot Tub Filled Or Winterize
Carefully: The Hot Tub Outlet team recommends keeping water in your hot tub throughout the year to
prevent leaks or cracks in the pipes. But if you must empty your hot tub, be sure it is fully winterized.

Kudzu Vs Herbicides
Most mechanical means of kudzu removal practiced in the southeastern United States involve mowing
the vine or cutting it back. These methods, though more effective than herbicides, are more time
consuming. Vines must be mowed down just above ground level every month or two during the
growing season in order to prevent them from growing back. When using this method of kudzu
control, all of the plant material must be removed and/or destroyed (burned) to prevent the vines from
taking root and re growing (Miller, J. H., Edwards, B. , 1983). A different, and sometimes less time
consuming option for the control of kudzu is chemical treatment with herbicides. However, chemical
treatments are expensive, and killing off the plant completely requires

Powerful Women in Antigone and A Doll’s House Essay
The music group, Aqua, once sang in their song, Barbie Girl, I m a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world. Life
in plastic, it s fantastic. Aqua s lyrics symbolize the role women had to play in the 18th century.
Women were expected to perform like perfect human beings, and put a smile on their faces regardless
of the situation. They were expected to follow the rules at all times and submit to men in an instance.
Antigone, written by Sophocles, and A Doll s House, written by Henrik Ibsen, demonstrate the
interaction and roles with men and women during the 18th century. The main characters in both plays,

Linden to leave the room when Helmer gets home because Helmer does not like seeing Women s
work. Nora was forced to hide her personal possessions in front of her husband. This shows how
women were forced to alter their lifestyle to please their husbands. Nora had to go out of her way in
order to make her husband satisfied. In Antigone, Ismene replies to Antigone s plan to bury her brother
with a feminist remark: Remember we are women, we re not born to contend with men. Then too, we
re underlings, ruled by much stronger hands, so we must submit to this... (Sophocles 18) Ismene
clearly shows that she and Antigone cannot compete with men because men are physically and
mentally stronger. This shows how Ismene and all other women thought they had to submit to the
authority of the state and to man in order to live fruitfully in society. Antigone and Nora exhibit in
many different instances how women had a very limited relationship with men.
Antigone and Nora had the courage to possess one of the characteristics that many women during the
18th century failed to acquire: braveness. While struggling with the decision to go against a man s
orders, Antigone stands up to authority and does the morally just thing: But leave me to my own
absurdity, leave me to suffer this dreadful thing. I ll suffer nothing as great as death without glory.

The Pros And Cons Of Hacking The Autonomous Vehicles
Back in 2004 when everyone watched the dystopian science film, I, Robot, no one imagined that the
autonomous cars that were shown would one day belong to many Americans. In the 1860 s, Robert
Whitehead invented a self propelled torpedo which gave rise to many new ideas such as autopilots,
auto tillers, and autonomous drones (Weber 3). With the new technology set in place, car developers
are engineering self driving cars known as autonomous cars (Weber 3). Autonomous cars are able to
sense vehicles, humans, and surrounding territory without any human cognition ( Weber 4) These cars

This in turn improves the traffic conditions on the road in areas that have high trafficking. When
someone is not stuck in traffic and is able to accelerate to the speed of other cars, they can maximize
on gasoline usage( Standley 12). This way the consumer in Northern Virginia will have to buy less
gasoline, and the gasoline will run a longer way for the autonomous cars. This will also help Northern
Virginia s movement to becoming a greener place. Conclusion Lastly, drivers will have to have some
kind of knowledge about driving a car in case of an emergency and they need to be in charge and take

adults with cognitive recognition and form will be able to use these cars even if they are not the
normal age of driving a regular car. Some type of testing procedure will need to be put in place. Self
driving cars are progressing day by day which only a decade ago was considered to be in dystopian
literature or in science fiction movies. In many contexts, there can be a lot of information that can be

Always Go to the Funeral by Deirdre Sullivan. Sullivan s use of rhetorical devices such as, anecdote,
diction, and pathos, make the article an effective essay that students can analyze and use as an
example to follow.
Sullivan s essay includes many rhetorical devices; the first one that stands out is the anecdote device
because of the experience that she went through. She uses her personal life as a short story to catch the
reader s attention. This is an example of a great device that can be used for all essays, because every
paper needs a hook that will keep the reader interested from the moment they start reading. Although,
sometimes it is difficult for dual credit students to find something that can catch a reader s attention,

human whereas others such as Danann were more than mortal ranging from descendants of other Gods
to spirits of the land. According to The Ages of the World the first settlers in Ireland was a race of men
before the Biblical Flood, and they have led a woman known as Cessair who was alleged to be Noah s
daughter. The flood killed all of them apart from Fintan mac Bochra who able to escape by changing
into a salmon. Danann bear both human and divine characteristics.

When Tuatha Dé Danann landed in Ireland, dense clouds masked their arrival. The druids (Tuatha s
religious leaders) blew rain clouds and fog over the entire island. The blown clouds released fire and
torrent of blood upon Fir Bolgs which caused them to hide in sheltered areas for three nights and three
days. The Fir Bolgs religious leaders cleared the air by carrying out the magic spell. Lastly, the two
races declared a 105 days truce so as to provide sufficient time for both sides to prepare for war. By
using their great magic and skills, Tuatha Dé Danann won their first war

Gq Magazine Stereotypes
When reading magazines, a consumer will come across multiple products that are targeted for both
men and women. Vogue is a magazine for women filled with high end fashion, beauty products, and
topics that are currently trending in society at the time. GQ targets mainly men and is filled with the
style of men and products they might be into which could relate to fashion, hygiene, food, or
technology. Women could look in the GQ magazine and men could take a look in the Vogue magazine,
not necessarily for themselves but maybe they are interested in purchasing a product that a person
opposite of their gender would want. Both these magazines advertise high end products and use thin or
fit models to advertise the products which contributes to society s views on body image and economic
status. Furthermore, both these magazines portray the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of course, many of these stereotypes have changed throughout the years which is why both magazines
are not really much different. Before, the women were expected to cook. They were the ones who ran
the household which is why many of the magazines for women had incorporated various recipes. Now
looking at both the Vogue and GQ magazine, it is noticeable that the stereotype is leaving the minds of
many people. The fact that were more advertisements on food in the GQ magazine than the Vogue
magazine proves that society has been improving. The Vogue magazine features Gigi Hadid and her
boyfriend Zayn Malik. They go through each other s closets. Hadid has clothing items that Malik
would be interested in wearing. Malik has clothing items that Hadid would want to wear. Clothing has
become much more universal now, to the point that couples can chop each other s closets. Both
magazines feature many of the same brands like Gucci. Gucci is a high end brand with clothing for
both men and women. There were not only Forever 21 advertisements for women and Abercrombie

Literary Analysis Of Saki s The Interlopers
Saki, in The Interlopers, says that our animalistic human nature traps us in blindness, but when we re
raised in a kind civilization, we choose to use friendship as a freedom from our inner violence.
Humans as a whole, have an animalistic nature to them. Saki starts the story with one of the main
character going on a hunt. Saki states, [A] man stood one winter night watching and listening, as
though he waited for some beast of the woods to come within the range of his vision, and, later, of his
rifle (Saki 6). Ulrich is stalking the woods for as Saki stated beast of the woods but rather he patrolled
the dark forest in quest of a human enemy. Saki goes on talking about the feud that started with their
grandfathers over a land ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In other words, Saki says that we, as humans, have an animalistic nature. This animalistic nature traps
us in blindness. Saki has a theme of blood throughout the story. Saki states, [A] s boys they had
thirsted for one another s blood, (7). The dictionary has a word for this definition bloodlust. As stated
before, this is slightly ironic, being that the bloodlust was in boys; boys who are supposed to be
innocent and honorable. He continues with, Georg, who was nearly blinded with the blood which
trickled across his eyes (8). According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, bloodlust is the desire to
kill or maim others ; In order to kill things, you need to see them. Saki goes on to stating, No, I can
scarcely see anything; there is so much blood caked round my eyes, said Georg, and in any case I don
t drink wine with an enemy (9). This blindness is caused by the bloodlust between the two souls, or in
other words, they are being blinded by their animalistic nature. Georg s animalistic human nature has
blinded him in hatred, which has caused him to not be able to see the similarities between him and
Ulrich. This blindness leaves when we re raised in a kind civilization. Saki starts the story with the
two souls coming face to face with each other, which is what they ve been wanting for a long time.

The Education Of Cyrus S
The Education of Cyrus Many people look at good leaders and wonder what made them great.
Xenophon was one such person. He looked at the legendary leader, Cyrus of Persia, and presented him
as the best leader the world had ever seen. Cyrus could rule over humans as easily as other men ruled
sheep and livestock. He was seen as just and honorable as he lavished things on his compatriots
generously. But although he acted just and honorable his motives were far from good. He used
manipulation to gain power for himself on many instances. His extravagant generosity, which was so
highly praised, was used for only his own gain. Cyrus true nature can be seen from a very young age.
At first glance Cyrus seemed to be a wonderful child, someone very obedient and loving. He
constantly served his mother and grandfather, eager to gratify them in anyway within his power. As
much as he looks like a boy with a good, generous heart doing what will make others happy there is an
underlying greed in the young boy. Cyrus is also described as most ambitious and one who endured
every labor for the sake of being praised . The young boy diligently learned how to do everything
exceedingly well and he worked on what he knew he was bad at in order to improve in order that he
could receive praise. However, he did these things so that others would praise him. His greed first
manifested itself in a greed for praise and attention, rather than simply to be generous. The greatest
example of Cyrus greed

Anne Sexton
Anne Sexton
Michealangelo, perhaps the most gifted sculptor and painter of all times, once said that geniuses stand
on the shoulders of other geniuses. As Michelangelo built upon the brilliance of his predecessors,
Anne Sexton does the same in her collection of poems entitled Transformations. She renovated fairy
tales as told by the Brothers Grimm by adding her own life experiences and view of contemporary
culture, hammering away until she built an entirely new art form. Anne Sexton has had a notable
effect upon the literary genre of fairy tales through this shocking transformation of classic tales.
Anne Sexton was born in Newton, Massachusetts on November 9, 1928 to Ralph and Mary Gray
Staples Harvey. Her life as a child and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

healing process (Middlebrook xiii xviii). With this encouragement Anne published her first book of
poetry, To Bedlam and Part Way Back, in 1960 (McCartan 2). The book was well received and marked
the beginning of her rise to the top. 1967 another major year in Sexton s career; she won the Pulitzer
Prize for Live or Die. Transformations, her book of poetic fairy tales, was published later in 1971. On
October 4, 1974, shortly after the release of Transformations, Anne could no longer stand the
pressures of her existence and committed suicide.
This biographical information is essential to understanding Anne Sexton s influence on the fairy tale
because her transformations of the Grimm Brother s work rises out of her personal turmoil. Most of
Sexton s works before and after Transformations are of the confessional style, but through her poetic
transformations of fairy tales, Sexton gives herself a more discrete outlet for her passions (Ostriker
255). Her biographer Diane Middlebrook notes that the poems were a way to place her struggles in
legend rather than personal history (37). The intensely metaphorical characters of Sexton s fairy
poetry are one example of this. For instance, Judith the cold and neglectful mother in Snow White
surely represents Sexton s own callous mother (Middlebrook 37). Sexton s father is also recognizable

Learning the Restored Gospel and Christianity through Church History
A man named George Santayana once said, Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to
repeat it (in John Bartlett, comp., Familiar Quotations, 15th ed. [1980], 703). We can clearly see that
learning from the past molds and shapes who we are today and what will become of us in the future.
Eventually, if we have learned how to live honorable and praiseworthy lives as true Christians we can
return to live with our Heavenly Father and his son Jesus Christ. God always wants the best for his
children so he has provided many means for us to return to his presence. One of these means is that

Many of the saints suffered ridicule and persecution for ideas such as God communicating with man
on Earth, miracles, and even priesthood authority. What we can learn is that the saints demonstrated
much faith and trust in the prophet Joseph Smith. They believed that his words and revelations came
from God and the saints were willing do whatever God required of them. Many early saints left their
prized possessions and homes when persecuted and asked to move to Zion. We as Christians can
increase and strengthen our faith like the early saints and true followers of Jesus Christ. Whenever
doubts or misunderstandings about the church arise, we can continue to be firm and persistent. Like
the early saints, we can rely on our prophet Thomas S. Monson as he guides and directs the church
according to God s will today. We need to be constantly reminding ourselves of the trials faithful
Christians have gone through and the faith they demonstrated even though they did not always have
the answers. Those that have continued in the church knew by faith and by the spirit that the church is
true, or they would have left a long time ago. We can also observe many miracles that have taken
place in church history. A man named Philo Dibble for example, a member of the church, was shot in

The Day Of Last Night
I inspected the autopsy notes carefully. Every single detail was vital to finding the murderer of the
wealthy Sir Simon Senior. Last night at the Whopping Hill Manor, Sir Simon was murdered by one of
his guest or staff at his famous annual business party. On the day of last night, every year, Sir Simon
summoned twelve lucky starting businesses, fed them an extravagant meal, and listened to their
business pitches about each of their products and chose one which he would fund. The lucky winner
walked away with nearly bottomless funds to build the business of their dreams. It was a highly
sophisticated event, but with last night s events in mind, it would probably never happen again. I
flipped to a page with very graphic pictures of where he was found and the part of his skull that was
bashed in with a small, heavy, round object. I shook my head as I remembered questioning a
frightened, scared witness recounting the gruesome scene. She was one of the twelve business

Post Modernism And Its Influence On Society
Post modernism came about in the late 20th century following modernism, which was a period where
people had a new found freedom to follow their own path in life, whether it was religion, science,
philosophy, art, or really anything they put their mind to as opposed to strictly traditional beliefs.
Writers could express their emotions more easily without really feeling a backlash from what
everyone else thought. Two female writers who were able to freely express themselves in their writing
during post modernism were Linda Pastan and Sharon Olds. Linda
Pastan talked more about her life in general like every day anxieties, her marriage, parenting, and even
grief. However, Sharon Olds was a little more controversial in her writing since she often talked about
sexuality and violence. Their writing styles were similar in the aspect that they both enjoyed writing
based on their own lives, but still very different on how they talked about certain subject matter. Even
with different approaches, these two authors were still both very influential on others who wanted to
share the same dream. Both authors have had similar educational backgrounds and writing
recognition. Pastan
Was raised in New York City and attended Radcliffe College. After her graduation, she decided to
focus her life on her family and did not return to writing until 10 years later when she was encouraged
by her husband to do so. She received awards such as Mademoiselle poetry prize, the Dylan Thomas

Similarities Between Henry III And Absolutism
When kings violated the moral order, they were subject to canon law like other members of the
Church, and could be excommunicated. The pope punished Philip Augustus in this way for the sin of
adultery. Boleslaus of Poland and Henry II of England were disciplined for the murders of St.
Stanislaus and St. Thomas A. Becket. The pope could release a ruler s subjects from their oath of
allegiance, and could even dispose the king. Pope Gregory VII did this in the case of Henry IV in
1080. Innocent IV did it against Frederick II in 1245. The Council of Lyons in 1274 laid down definite
rules about the role of Cardinals in papal elections. On the tenth day after the pope s death they were

Piaget created this theory because he was interested and wanted to identify why children gave
incorrect answers that needed logical thinking. He considered that children are active in their learning.
Because babies aren t taught to crawl or walk, Piaget believed that babies are born with the ability to
adapt to and learn from the environment.
Piaget developed the four stages by observing and testing children. He found that children behaved or
seemed to understand things in a particular way at different ages. Piaget didn t want to measure how
well a child can count, spell or solve problems. He was more interested in the way in which
fundamental concepts like the very idea of number , time , quantity , causality , justice and so on

Analysis Of Thomas Hardy s Of The D
Author Thomas Hardy is typically distinguished for following a trend in which all his fiction is
characterized by chance being the incarnation of the blind forces controlling human destiny. As J
Clipper once said, Hardy reflected Nietzsche s agonized cry that God is dead , in his novels. His view
of life was that since there is no God to give meaning to life, Man is alone in the Universe, no better
and no worse than other creatures who live or have lived for a brief moment on this speck called
Earth. The Universe and fate is essentially malevolent and benevolent. Hardy believes that God,
whether he once was once a presence or not, has disappeared entirely from the world. People are left

Tess is exposed to the cruelty of fate from the moment that God places her into the Durbyfield family.
Born into a poverty stricken and uneducated family, she is subject to the hardships that that entails.
Her Father an alcoholic and her Mother less of a woman than she is herself, her upbringing already
sets her apart from the rest of the world, and she recognizes her underprivileged condition. Did you
say the stars were worlds, Tess? Yes. All like ours? I don t know, but I think so. They sometimes seem
to be like the apples on our stubbard tree. Most of them splendid and sound a few blighted. Which do
we live on a Splendid one or a blighted one? A blighted one. (Hardy 54) Tess is raised in an
environment that encourages a belief in a kind of predetermination and fatality, demonstrated by the
fact that her mother often consults the complete fortune teller, an old book of astrological guidance.
Tess however has been educated, and thus does not subscribe to the same beliefs that her mother does.
In a similar way, Hardy uses Tess s father John Durbyfield to illustrate the power of fate to change one
s life. In chapter one, when John is told of the nobility that exists in their bloodline, he believes that
their life will soon be catastrophically changed. Don t you really know, Durbyfield, that you are the

My Passion Of Reading
Being able to read and write is arguably the most essential skill needed in life. I was able to begin
mastering the skill of reading at a very young age and to some individuals it may become later in life
because it seems boring to them. I did not have an interest in reading until I watched the movie Pearl
Harbor the one with Ben Affleck in it. This movie created my passion of reading by learning about the
second world war. Also, I read books to learn new information on material. I did not do it for any type
of approval from someone contradictory to Cisneros who always wanted the approval of her father

time, but when I started to read about World War II I started to read more and more articles and books

I Remember An Exchange Between Two Board Members Essay
Acknowledge the problem. I remember an exchange between two board members. One member was
frustrated with the direction the organization was taking. He told the other, Just don t worry about it. It
isn t that important. Keep in mind what appears to be a small issue to you can be a major issue with
another. Acknowledging the frustration and concerns is an important step in resolving the conflict.
Honesty and clear communication play an important role in the resolution process. Acquaint yourself
with what s happening and be open about the problem. Let individuals express their feelings. Some
feelings of anger and/or hurt usually accompany conflict situations. Before any kind of problem
solving can take place, these emotions should be expressed and acknowledged.
Establish guidelines. Before conducting a formal meeting between individuals, get both parties to
agree to a few meeting guidelines. Ask them to express themselves calmly as unemotionally as
possible. Have them agree to attempt to understand each other s perspective. Tell them if they violate
the guidelines the meeting will come to an end.
Be patient and take your time. Take time to evaluate all information. A too quick decision does more
harm than good when it turns out to be the wrong decision and further alienating the individual
involved.
Avoid using coercion and intimidation. Emotional outbursts or coercing people may stop the problem

Patrick Bateman s Use Of Dramaturgy In American Psycho
Introduction Dramaturgy, or impression management, is the conscious effort an individual puts forth
when trying to present a certain impression of himself to others. This is used in things like job
interviews in order to highlight certain aspects that one might want others to perceive more vividly.
There are also two types of self presentation as well. There is tactical, as just discussed, and then there
is authentic. The authentic self is when someone is using his or her own genuine personality. This
often requires no thinking in how one should act or portray. In contrast to the job interview using a
tactical self presentation, the authentic presentation would be when an individual is associating with
friends or close family. The individual s actions are free flowing and he can feel relaxed. Furthermore,
there are several components to dramaturgy. There are frontstage and backstage moments, authentic
and tactical self, in face and out of face moments, non observance, tact, and sign vehicles. All of these
come together to form the performance and give off an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bateman s real self is hidden away, except for a few instances in which his authentic self comes forth
and he becomes out of face. Patrick Bateman suffers from disturbing thoughts and is a psychopath
when left to his own self or not under the surveillance of others. In public, Bateman gives off the
impression of a successful vice president of a large investment firm. Bateman must portray a certain
image of himself, his in face, because of what is expected of him. When Bateman steps outside this
image, when he becomes out of face, others often try to correct him or act like nothing happened in
order to keep social interactions running smooth and according to plan. The several components of
dramaturgy will be further discussed in

Family Tree Flake Research Paper
The ability to make and use tools dates back millions of years in our family tree. Chimpanzees, our
closest living relatives, can on their own devise spear like weapons for hunting and create specialized
tool kits for foraging ants, suggesting our family tree may have possessed wooden tools since the
ancestors of humans and chimps diverged some 4 million years ago.
The dawn of stone tools dates back some 2.6 million years to Gona in Ethiopia. Known as the
Oldowan, these include not just fist sized hunks of rock for pounding, but also the first known
manufacture of stone tools sharp flakes created by knapping, or striking a hard stone against quartz,
obsidian, flint or any other rock whose flakes can hold an edge. At this time are also the oldest known
butchered animal bones. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was the extent of the technology for nearly a million years. It was probably very ad hoc when
you needed a stone tool and you didn t have one, just made one, then dropped it, said
paleoanthropologist Thomas Wynn at University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
Such technology is just slightly past the range of what apes generally do, Wynn added. Indeed,
chimpanzees in the wild can use stones as simple tools for hammering, and the chimpanzee like
bonobo ape can even be taught how to flake stone to make cutting tools. These don t seem to represent
any great intellectual leap, he

Holly Burnham American Beauty
... look closer (American Beauty, 1999) is the tagline of the film American Beauty, telling us to look
underneath the surface, the image of the picture perfect family, living the dream that many are trying
to achieve. Lester and Carolyn Burnham, along with their teenage daughter, Jane, are a middle class
American family, living in a wealthy suburban area. Nonetheless, beneath the image of success and
happiness, lies a dysfunctional family in which each individual is fighting their own battle. Carolyn is
the portrayal of the Amercian Dream. She is a real estate agent, whose main goal is to be successful
and efficient. Ignoring the problems she has with her family, primarily her husband, she is more

Angela is a typical American teenager; a beautiful blonde and blue eyed girl, who enjoys receiving
attention and presenting herself in the best light. Her dream is to become a wealthy model. In that
sense, she is quite similar to Carolyn because, for the both of them the American Dream stands for
success, and the thought of an ordinary life is absolutely distressing. Similarly to Lester, his daughter,
Jane, is not concerned with riches and does not wish to follow in her mother s footsteps. She
represents the simplicity and beauty of life; a kind of true beauty that can be found in anything. Jane s
dream is to leave her old life and start over somewhere new, where she will be able to live according
to her wishes and dreams. Despite the constant conflicts between her and her father, they both share
this desire of abandoning the life set for them by the American Dream and starting over. Through the
way the characters act and how they present themselves, we realize the complexity of the American
Dream and the different meanings it holds. While for some it might be the idea of an ideal and blissful
life, for others it is dull and

Hard Cover vs. Hard Drive
Will Electronic Publications Ever Replace the Book?
At one time our world was strictly an oral culture. We recited stories, kept records stored in our
memories. When writing was invented did we suddenly stop speaking to one another or remembering
facts? Of course not. At any given moment we can recall, from memory, names, dates, and places that
we have committed to memory. When the printing press was invented, did we stop writing by hand?
Again, no. So, why would we stop reading a book just because we have access to the World Wide
Web? All previous information technologies of language, rhetoric, writing and printing are
technological in themselves (Landow 218). These technologies writing, speaking, ... Show more

For these books the Internet makes life much easier. If, however, what you want is a story: an
engaging novel with plot twists, vivid characters, and a story you can relate to, you may be reluctant to
jump on your computer I understand. Stories such as these are meant to be read while curled up on a
chair sitting next to a roaring fireplace, but who has the time for that anymore? The Internet novel
could very well become the book on the go. Therefore, anywhere that you have Internet access, which
is growing by the minute, you have your book their waiting for you.
Electronic publications have not only increased access to text, they have even created new ways to
view and interpret literature, not to mention new ways to write it (Landow 223). Some would argue
that electronic publications leave little room for the true author the Hemingway s and Thoreau s that
write in secluded cabins, scratching novels on loose paper but I disagree. Internet authors, while more
common that those published in book form, may be in fact be held to a higher standard. The true
author is not leaving the picture, as some fear, but is now expected to continuously paint it. Authors
are evolving into constant suppliers of new content; they are reporters and advisors as much as they
are writers (Pang 349).
The downside to amateur web publications is that the works may not be as well edited as those found
in book form, but more often than not the

Traditional Media And New Media
We are at this era where we can sit and type something out which could be accessed by anyone who is
online. New media such as blogging, social media and the internet creates this possibility.
However this has introduced an argument where the new media appears as a space for every citizen in
a democracy to participate in the public conversation. The internet is deploying political influence,
elevating political involvement and questioning the monopoly of traditional elites. The main idea
being that new media is able to generate dissenting voice of every citizen.
Hence new media appears as something transcendental. Does that indicate that new media has its own
agency? If it does, does it have a self? Does that change the assumed neutral ... Show more content on

But that does not alter the broader picture. If regional and local papers disappear, with only national
and international news sources like CNN left standing, we may regret having nowhere to read about
recent city council meetings, church picnics, school fundraisers, and other matters of the kind of
community concern that have long been integral to American civic life. Before modern media brought
national news and politics into the home of every citizen, many Americans could be more interested in
and affected by the deliberations of the local assembly or the state legislature than by the comings and
goings of powerful people in Washington or New York City. That perspective is becoming
increasingly difficult to maintain.
Q. Discuss the affects of new media on democracy.
Through this essay I will explore this agency of new media and how its contact with the agency of the
authoritarian forces and citizens shows how new media itself is a powerful tool independent of the
authority and the population. We will go through works of Lincoln Dahlberg, Henry Jenkins and
David Thornburn s edited work of Democracy and New Media, Matthew Hindman s The Myth of
Digital Democracy and Evgeny Morozov s The Net Delusion
The question How does technology, social media affect democracy? will be explored by first looking
at how technology and social media has influenced the way we perceive and interact with the world.

Lt Gen Lewis B. Puller
The history of Lieutenant General Lewis B. Chesty Puller is not well known outside of the U.S.
Marine Corps, but as the most decorated marine in history his legend will live on and continue to
inspire the marines of tomorrow. The enlisted corps has idolized him, frequently encouraging one
another to do that last push up when motivated by fellow marines saying Do one for Chesty! The
purpose of this essay is to demonstrate that Chesty, using current day leadership theories, was a
visionary and ethical leader who exemplified the characteristics that our nation s military needed
during World War II and still needs today. I will explain how he embodied some principles of Full

He returned stateside and received his commission as a second lieutenant in 1924. In 1928, he was
ordered to the Nicaraguan National Guard to fight armed bandit forces. The significance of these two
battle experiences was seen when Lieutenant Colonel Puller led his marines into combat in World War
II. Chesty led his Marines by drawing on his past experiences. According to Authentic Leadership
Theory, leaders must first understand where they came from, their life experiences, their strengths, and
how they behave toward others (CF02, 2012, pg. 8). Chesty went to great lengths to care for his men,
particularly his enlisted corps, by conducting grueling training missions. After daytime combat, he
walked around and talked to his men at night to encourage them by keeping spirits high. While some
junior leaders would continue to chafe at Chesty s treatment of them, after their first brush with
combat none would regret his insistence on tough training (Hoffman, 2001, pg. 147). Through his
harsh treatment, his goal was to teach them to lead men, and that meant the men came first. His
officers ate after the enlisted, and Chesty insisted they work alongside one another during details.
Leadership is more than just being visionary; without ethical leadership, you have no trust or
credibility.
Chesty Puller was an ethical leader during combat: one of the most trying situations in which to

Negative Effects Of Mass Media
The Negative Effects of Mass Media Mass media surrounds the lives of our global society. Dating
back to centuries, the media is prominent through the modes of television, internet, and paper press.
Media is the main means of mass communication in the twenty first century, and is the central source
of information for the general public. A new form of media, social media, has gained popularity in
recent years. The First social media platform was born in 1997 with the launch of the first social
media site, Six Degrees, a site meant to connect people worldwide. By the year 2000, nearly one
hundred million people gained access to the internet, which resulted in more people becoming active
on social media sites. Six Degrees worked as a foundation for other social media like: myspace,
facebook, twitter, instagram, and snapchat. Mass media negatively impacts students, politics, and
incites racial tensions in society today. Media today is faulty and brainwashes students. A study found
that, If the children are the future, the future might be very ill informed (Domonoske). Domonoske
claims that the news feeds untrue and biased information to students; these students of today s society
will grow up to be the future. It is imperative that students receive true and reputable information from
the media. If they are not now, well informed, then a society filled with uneducated individuals will
reside. Malinformation generates arguments that can become more serious and turn into a much bigger
problem. To avoid this, highly intellectual people must attempt to find a way for students to be well
informed. Researches have taken the time to study the influence media has on students. In a recent
study, Stanford researchers that evaluated students ability to assess information sources and described
the results as dismaying, bleak and [a] threat to democracy (Domonoske). The study proved that
students do not know how to determine fake from real information. If there is no way for students to
receive true and unbiased information from news sources then they should develop the skills to assess
any material presented to them. Today, they do not possess the ability to single out untrue and
opinionated statements. They are

Owens Valley Summary
Kharl argues that in the case of the Sierra Nevada s Owens Valley, located approximately 250 miles
north Los Angeles, the valley s agricultural shareholders and the City of Los Angeles originally sought
an agreement that reserved sufficient water for valley residents to maintain their ranching life style
while concurrently exporting the valley s surplus to the soon to be developed San Fernando Valley.
Such an agreement would allow rural users to maintain their ranches while concurrently allowing Los
Angeles to grow. In 1913, as plans for the Los Angeles Aqueduct finally came to fruition with water
flowing from the valley to the basin, years of effort ended with both parties unable to agree to an
acceptable division of those waters with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Climate change and its impact on basic water supply is at their foreground. It is an unfortunate reality
that the terms of the Colorado Compact, the document dividing the Colorado s waters, is an
unworkable document. Based on allotments formulated in an especially wet year, the average volume
now flowing does not meet the amounts specified in the agreement. Under the terms of the document,
California receives the largest share, but with Southern California s exploding population, this will be
increasingly inadequate. Absent changes in both urban and agricultural use patterns, the deficit will
only grow and further stress the state s political and economic systems. Man s mastery will thus prove
illusory and short lived and the original problems of water supply will return in highly magnified

Informative Speech About Voodoo
It has been almost 6 months now that my girlfriend and I came back from a trip to New Orleans. This
is a town rich in history, amazing food, the locals were some of the friendliest people and the music of
the city truly seemed to act as a heartbeat that gave the city life. However, something that truly caught
my eye, were all the voodoo shops. One of their oldest cemeteries is home to the tomb of the Voodoo
Queen Marie Laveau. Unfortunately when we went, they weren t giving tours. When most in modern
society most hear the word Voodoo; they probably think about what they ve seen on movies... witch
doctors, dolls that are used to curse Indiana Jones in the Temple of Doom or evil possession of people
s bodies through spirits. However, that really isn t the case, for a religion that a lot of people really don
t know a lot about, the religion of Voodoo or Vodun. The name was derived from the god Vodun of the
West African Yoruba people who lived in 18th and 19th century Dahomey. The African people were
shipped as slaves to Haiti and other islands. Slaves practiced this religion but were also forced by the
masters who owned them to practice Christianity. Which if you fast forward to modern times, you will
see that most adults in Haiti and some cities in the Southern States of North America not only still
practice Voodoo but are also Roman Catholic. Though not a new religion, this religion has a lot of
history and similar beliefs of other religions. The interpretation of death and the afterlife is interesting.
Before, I touch on this its, important to know that community and the people is very important when it
comes to Voodoo as a religion. In the event of a death the community gets really involved, if a loved
one is dying, the family all tries to come together for prayer. People, who practice Voodoo, don t
believe that death is the end. When death occurs, they believe that certain rituals need to be done to
help the soul. Loved ones of the deceased perform a Rite of Reclamation which is to call back the
spirit. A priest or priestess, which are called houngan or mambo; serve as healers, diviners,
psychologists, counselors and spiritual leaders; help during this time to bring the spirit back so they

  • 2. Jaye Pont s Study Jaye Pont is an Australian potter by trade and achieved a PhD in ancient history (Catchpole, 2004). In 1998, in 2001 Pont joined the Anglo American Project in Pompeii where she was able to make significant discoveries about their everyday life that enhances our knowledge and understanding of everyday life in Pompeii. Jaye Pont is well known in her field for the contributions she has made regarding Pompeii s trading behaviours through the medium of pottery and has challenge preconceived beliefs and have allowed for new understandings of life in Pompeii. Pont disproved previous theories concerning overseas ceramic trading and, as a result there was need to revaluate Pompeii s role in trade and commerce during the time before 79AD (Zarmati, 2005). Pont s findings were significant to understanding life in Pompeii and her conclusions have been recognised in numerous scholarly articles, therefore publicising her findings and enhancing the public s knowledge of Pompeii. Jaye Pont was at the forefront of archaeological investigation at Pompeii and has contributed significantly to our understanding of this ancient city today. Jaye Pont has made ... Pottery is very beneficial and advantageous to archaeologists as it is a very common and widespread product that leads us to have a greater understanding about the everyday life of the area inhabitants. Pottery is one of the most common artefacts in ancient sites. Once broken, unlike glass and metal, it cannot be recycled. This makes it very useful to archaeologists, said Pont. Pont made the conclusion that the red slip pottery was used by the Pompeian s as tableware with the main purpose of serving food and drink given its characteristically glossy surface. By dipping ceramics in liquid clay and later firing it in an oxygenating kiln is how this gloss is created (Kalnins, 2004) (see figure ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Developing the Lexical Acquistion of a Language Acquisition of language is often a very difficult task that requires time and commitment. To learn language one needs to focus and various aspects of language that include reading, writing, listening, speaking, and pronunciation. Perhaps one of the most difficult and time consuming tasks that exist in language learning is lexical acquisition. To accurately express oneself, a large lexical inventory is required. Vocabulary learning is accomplished by many different methods; memorization and multiple exposures are required and, in addition, one needs to learn a word s collocations and syntactic constraints. There has been much research done that focuses on methods of teaching vocabulary and extensive reading is one such method. Extensive reading is a method of reading instruction where students are encouraged to read large quantity of texts in order to promote understanding. There is also an underlying goal that involves getting students to enjoy reading. There several aspects to extensive reading and principles have even been given by certain researchers. In their article, Day Bamford (2002) introduced 10 principles that are related to extensive reading. These principles include: the reading material must be comprehensible, there must be a variety of material with many topics, the students have choice in their reading material, the students read as much as possible, the purpose of reading should be for pleasure and general understanding, the reading should be its ... Lack of knowledge in the wider community of Indigenous cultural heritage has created confusion, misunderstandings and inequality which have all continually placed pressure on the Indigenous heritage. Years of European misperceptions and indifferences have adversely affected them. Thus, I have chosen this case study to increase my awareness and understanding of the Indigenous community as well as their beliefs and systems. I would further like to understand how the law affects the indigenous culture and how it responds to issues regarding the rights of native Australians. The case study is essentially about a marine sacred site ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although Magamarra and the Blyth River are registered as sacred sites, the physical condition and integrity of them is under threat from unauthorised use by commercial fishing vessels. There is a natural barramundi habitat in the estuarine waters of the Blyth River and the only way to enter these waters is through Magamarra. Illegal fishing activities at Magamarra are the most substantial threat to the condition and integrity of the site. There have been several reported recurrent problems with commercial fishermen disobeying customary laws and entering the site at night. In April of 2011 a commercial barramundi fisherman was fined $5,000 for setting up a gill net at Magamarra. After the court case, a Traditional Custodian observed that the illegal fishing appeared to have stopped, but questioned for how long. The physical condition and integrity of Magamarra is vital to the cultural wellbeing of the Guwowura and Mareang A Jirra people. • 5. Reading Books And Reading Despite the growing power and spread of the Internet, there are still some reasons that I often prefer to read books. As a growing adult I have really become more interested in self help books and books that teachers have written that are really connectable to my daily experience within life. I find that this experience in finding these types of books really help me to have great experience with reading and really enjoy reading. The only aspect of reading or bad memory that I can remember about reading is during high school when I was forced to read books that I did not like and did not enjoy. I found that I would not read the book and this made me a bad reader within the eyes of the curriculum. After that point in high school I gave up on reading until coming to Denver Colorado where my teachers inspired me with teacher information and reading classes where I really got to establish myself as a reader and a writer. Describe where you have lived and what your schools were like. My name is Alexis McCormick, and I have been a student here at the college since August 17, 2015. I moved to Littleton Colorado on August 15, 2015. I am originally from Rapid City, South Dakota. This is a small town and the classroom sizing was very small as well. I remember my overall learning to read experience being very successful throughout my elementary and middle school years. I love Colorado and going to school here, however the transition from a small hometown school to a big city with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Zhou Yu’s Train by Sun Zhou is a story about a woman, Zhou... Zhou Yu s Train by Sun Zhou is a story about a woman, Zhou Yu, who is torn between her mind and heart. (Havis, 2004) She has to choose to stay either with the poet Chen Qing or the vet Zhang Qiang, but the choice is not easy for her. Therefore she continues her travels with train until she finds the answer of this question in the face of the death. Zhou Yu s Train sets the question was her love relationship with Zhang Qiang a reality, represents the new status of poets and women in Chinese society in Modern China. The Zhou Yu s story is a paradox, which question the reality of existence of her relationship with Chen Qing. Then as a contra argument Xiu finds the broken piece of the bowl in the train which symbolizes the broken love as a proof that this love existed, and the final scene of the lake proving that Zhou Yu also existed. In conclusion, by challenging the notion of existence of such relationship, it is created the feeling that their love is on the verge between reality and dreams. Secondly, the story challenges the problem of the changed status of the poets in China. Although they were highly respected in early Chinese dynasties, poets in the 20th century as part of the Chinese intelligence, which is not favoured by the Communist party, became highly unpopular in China. (King, 2004) In the movie for example no one knows who Chen Qing is and although Zhou Yu helps him to make popular the event, no one comes. Such thing may be consequence of the fact that poetry was regarded during this time only as an instrument of the political party for propaganda and that society did not indulged in any kind of art except the traditional and communist. (King, 2004) Moreover, Chen Qing is not rich, in contrary to the great Confucius who lived richly, he only works in a small library and lives simple life, judging from his bead and living conditions. Furthermore, poetry other than propaganda is hard to be published and authors have to invest their own money in order their book to be printed which is a paradox when in today s societies they live poorly. • 7. Whale Rider Reflection The film Whale Rider takes A large portion of the film fixates on the dynamic of this connection amongst Koro, the tribal chief, and his granddaughter Paikea. Paikea respects her grandfather, and has a puzzling association with the tribe s ancestry; her namesake, Paikea the Whale Rider, travelled from Hawaii to New Zealand on the back of a whale. Paikea spends the most of the film trying to prove her worth and gain respect from her grandfather. Unlike many of the other tribal youth, she reveres the ancestral tribe s dances and songs, and becomes highly skilled in both. She is exceptionally proud of her heritage and is finally given the opportunity to prove herself when a pod of whales become beached on the local shore. Mirroring her namesake, Paikea rides the largest whale back into the waves, saving the pod from disaster and death. At the end of the film, her strength, courage, and supernatural appointment as future chief is enough to convince Koro of her leadership abilities, and a new generation of Maori is given hope and guidance for the future. Maori traditions take central stage throughout the film. Each of the film s characters struggles with these customs. For instance, Koro is more reluctant to give up or bend traditional rules and practices. From the outset of the film, Koro is primarily concerned with the continuation of the royal bloodline via a grandson. When only his granddaughter survives, he is not only bitter towards her, but he is also preoccupied with remedying the situation for the sake of his people. He is not only adamant in upholding the patriarchal leadership tradition, but the tribe chief dynamic, in general, that many in his society have abandoned in practice and principle. Still clinging to this way of life, he and members of the elder generation take action in an attempt to fill the leadership void. At one point, it is decided by the elder council that a school, dedicated to the traditional teachings and cultural elements once so vital to Maori society and leadership, specifically, be opened to the male youths of the community. Here, Koro may conduct a formal search for the next tribal chief, while adequately equipping all male candidates with the knowledge and practice of many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Power Of Freedom By Kate Chopin Ruben Joseph Daniel Roberts EFL 095 4103 17 November 2014 The Power of Freedom An Indispensable Right There are a variety of birds that make wonderful house pets, and most of these birds don t mind living in a cage. However, this is not the case for the cockatiel. When the cockatiel is not able to fly freely and have social interaction with other birds of its type, it becomes depressed and plucks out all of its feathers, one by one. It longs for freedom. The kind of freedom it would get out in the wild. In 1894, Kate Chopin wrote The Story of an Hour, to describe the constraints placed on women during the 19th century. During the 19th century women didn t have rights, their only roles were to be wives and mothers. Women didn t have any rights to make decisions, have freedom of speech or work outside the home. It is an obstacle in the face of liberty that everyone should have, but only men reaped the benefits during this time. However, in the story, the main character, Mrs. Mallard experiences freedom for a short period of time. Mrs. Mallard receives news that her husband Bently was killed in a train accident and her sister Josephine and friend take precautions to share the news because they know it will bring on deep sorrow. In contrast, the death of her husband brings on a new feeling that others might consider inappropriate after the death of a spouse. Kate Chopin shows this in the short story: She abandoned herself a little whispered word escaped her slightly parted lips. She said it over and over under her breath: free, free, free! (Chopin 327). Death of a love one is expected to cause sadness, but in this case, it was for a short period of time. The premature death of Mr. Mallard causes Mrs. Mallard to start to notice the beauty of her environment, which possibly had gone unnoticed for a long time. Fueled By The National Momentum For Social Reform During Fueled by the national momentum for social reform during the post World War II era, the United Kingdom restructured their health care system in 1946 to a socialized form where the federal government both regulates and administers universal health care to its residents through the National Health Service program. General income taxes fund the entirety of this health care program and the single payer nature of this system has eliminated the need for insurance companies since the federal government directly finances every British resident s medical bills at the time of their treatment. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the name implies, the National Health Service provides health care services to only permanent residents and any international visitors, including British born citizens, must pay a package rate for health care treatment that the government predetermines. The Washington Post s assessment of Great Britain s health care system reveals that this package rate that foreign visitors must pay for basic medical procedures is significantly inexpensive when compared with other industrialized countries. According to the gov.uk website, this National Health Service even provides immediate coverage to new immigrants by making them pay a surcharge as part of their immigration application to enter into the system. Since a majority of health care treatments in Britain are fully covered by the National Health Service, T.R. Reid in the PBS documentary, Sick Around the World , explains that no British residents fall into bankruptcy due to an inability to pay medical bills. The nhs.uk website further highlights the wide scope of health care coverage that the National Health Service provides by explaining how patients receive inpatient and outpatient hospital care, physician services, preventive treatments, diagnostic screenings, pediatric care, emergency care, nursing facilities, long term care, and end of life care without any out of pocket payments. • 12. Child Behavior And Language Assessment The postulate we chose to research is from the social participation frame of reference. It states that if routine is provided for difficult or disorganizing activities, children will develop calmer and more cooperative behaviors during those activities (Olson, 2010). When researching for an article that either supported or refuted the postulate, Family Centered Intervention for Young Children at risk for Language and Behavior Problems was found. The study was initiated by dividing forty one randomly selected children, ages 3 5 years, with potential language and behavioral difficulties into a control group or intervention group receiving adult support (Chao, Bryan, Burstein, Ergul, 2006). The purpose was to explore the impact parent involvement and routines have on the development of socially acceptable behavior and language in children (Chao et al., 2006). Parents were asked to rate various aspects of their child, such as motor skills and behavior, then decide activities in the Child Behavior and Language Assessment (CBLA) to focus on and review intermittently in a log to help conclude if the intervention was beneficial or not (Chao et al., 2006). The intervention was based on the reviews and opinions of the parents and occasional professional observation. CBLA is comprised of assessments of children s language and behavior, and routine based activities assisting the establishment of language and ideal behavior (Chao et al., 2006). The ... • 13. Comparison Between Raphael And Leonardo Da Vinci s Last... Art is a conversation between the artist and the audience, and through which the artwork is the medium between both. The artist, as the author of the piece, generates the message, plans the piece, and executes it to the best of his abilities. The audience, on their part, uses past experiences and knowledge of the artist and artwork to interpret the work,(which interestedly can lead to multiple conclusions of the work that are far distant from the artist s original understanding). Then there is the artwork itself: it is the passive participant whose influences beyond that of the artist and the audience is time. Throughout history, this has been the case Raphael and his Galatea, and Leonardo da Vinci and his Last Supper but in more recent times, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is done through the process by which he created the piece: he generated the dimensions of each block according to a mathematical premise and then he sent the plan to a factory to have the blocks fabricated. Through this process he had ten identical blocks made. Thus, the piece maintains only a distant connection to the artist who created it, and resembles that of the mass production in which the industrial designer creates a general plan that the factory workers then replicate repeatedly. This elimination of the artist s involvement is also illustrated in the title of the piece , Untitled : through the intentional act of not giving the piece a name, Judd therefore refuses to impose any preconstructed view on the piece. By eliminating himself from the conversation as much as possible, Judd focuses the attention toward the interaction between the piece and the audience, and particularly the piece. • 16. Kudzu Vs Herbicides Most mechanical means of kudzu removal practiced in the southeastern United States involve mowing the vine or cutting it back. These methods, though more effective than herbicides, are more time consuming. Vines must be mowed down just above ground level every month or two during the growing season in order to prevent them from growing back. When using this method of kudzu control, all of the plant material must be removed and/or destroyed (burned) to prevent the vines from taking root and re growing (Miller, J. H., Edwards, B. , 1983). A different, and sometimes less time consuming option for the control of kudzu is chemical treatment with herbicides. They were expected to follow the rules at all times and submit to men in an instance. Antigone, written by Sophocles, and A Doll s House, written by Henrik Ibsen, demonstrate the interaction and roles with men and women during the 18th century. This shows how Ismene and all other women thought they had to submit to the authority of the state and to man in order to live fruitfully in society. Antigone and Nora exhibit in many different instances how women had a very limited relationship with men. Antigone and Nora had the courage to possess one of the characteristics that many women during the 18th century failed to acquire: braveness. While struggling with the decision to go against a man s orders, Antigone stands up to authority and does the morally just thing: But leave me to my own absurdity, leave me to suffer this dreadful thing. He looked at the legendary leader, Cyrus of Persia, and presented him as the best leader the world had ever seen. Cyrus could rule over humans as easily as other men ruled sheep and livestock. He was seen as just and honorable as he lavished things on his compatriots generously. But although he acted just and honorable his motives were far from good. He used manipulation to gain power for himself on many instances. His extravagant generosity, which was so highly praised, was used for only his own gain. Cyrus true nature can be seen from a very young age. At first glance Cyrus seemed to be a wonderful child, someone very obedient and loving. He constantly served his mother and grandfather, eager to gratify them in anyway within his power. As much as he looks like a boy with a good, generous heart doing what will make others happy there is an underlying greed in the young boy. Cyrus is also described as most ambitious and one who endured every labor for the sake of being praised . The young boy diligently learned how to do everything exceedingly well and he worked on what he knew he was bad at in order to improve in order that he could receive praise. However, he did these things so that others would praise him. His greed first manifested itself in a greed for praise and attention, rather than simply to be generous. The book was well received and marked the beginning of her rise to the top. 1967 another major year in Sexton s career; she won the Pulitzer Prize for Live or Die. Transformations, her book of poetic fairy tales, was published later in 1971. On October 4, 1974, shortly after the release of Transformations, Anne could no longer stand the pressures of her existence and committed suicide. This biographical information is essential to understanding Anne Sexton s influence on the fairy tale because her transformations of the Grimm Brother s work rises out of her personal turmoil. Most of Sexton s works before and after Transformations are of the confessional style, but through her poetic transformations of fairy tales, Sexton gives herself a more discrete outlet for her passions (Ostriker 255). Her biographer Diane Middlebrook notes that the poems were a way to place her struggles in legend rather than personal history (37). The intensely metaphorical characters of Sexton s fairy poetry are one example of this. For instance, Judith the cold and neglectful mother in Snow White surely represents Sexton s own callous mother (Middlebrook 37). Sexton s father is also recognizable in her work as ... Many early saints left their prized possessions and homes when persecuted and asked to move to Zion. Whenever doubts or misunderstandings about the church arise, we can continue to be firm and persistent. Like the early saints, we can rely on our prophet Thomas S. Analysis Of Thomas Hardy s Of The D Author Thomas Hardy is typically distinguished for following a trend in which all his fiction is characterized by chance being the incarnation of the blind forces controlling human destiny. As J Clipper once said, Hardy reflected Nietzsche s agonized cry that God is dead , in his novels. His view of life was that since there is no God to give meaning to life, Man is alone in the Universe, no better and no worse than other creatures who live or have lived for a brief moment on this speck called Earth. The Universe and fate is essentially malevolent and benevolent. Hardy believes that God, whether he once was once a presence or not, has disappeared entirely from the world. Tess however has been educated, and thus does not subscribe to the same beliefs that her mother does. In a similar way, Hardy uses Tess s father John Durbyfield to illustrate the power of fate to change one s life. Patrick Bateman s Use Of Dramaturgy In American Psycho Introduction Dramaturgy, or impression management, is the conscious effort an individual puts forth when trying to present a certain impression of himself to others. This is used in things like job interviews in order to highlight certain aspects that one might want others to perceive more vividly. There are also two types of self presentation as well. There is tactical, as just discussed, and then there is authentic. The authentic self is when someone is using his or her own genuine personality. This often requires no thinking in how one should act or portray. In contrast to the job interview using a tactical self presentation, the authentic presentation would be when an individual is associating with friends or close family. The individual s actions are free flowing and he can feel relaxed. Furthermore, there are several components to dramaturgy. Dating back to centuries, the media is prominent through the modes of television, internet, and paper press. Media is the main means of mass communication in the twenty first century, and is the central source of information for the general public. A new form of media, social media, has gained popularity in recent years. The First social media platform was born in 1997 with the launch of the first social media site, Six Degrees, a site meant to connect people worldwide. By the year 2000, nearly one hundred million people gained access to the internet, which resulted in more people becoming active on social media sites. Six Degrees worked as a foundation for other social media like: myspace, facebook, twitter, instagram, and snapchat. Mass media negatively impacts students, politics, and incites racial tensions in society today. Media today is faulty and brainwashes students. Unfortunately when we went, they weren t giving tours. When most in modern society most hear the word Voodoo; they probably think about what they ve seen on movies... witch doctors, dolls that are used to curse Indiana Jones in the Temple of Doom or evil possession of people s bodies through spirits. However, that really isn t the case, for a religion that a lot of people really don t know a lot about, the religion of Voodoo or Vodun. The name was derived from the god Vodun of the West African Yoruba people who lived in 18th and 19th century Dahomey. The African people were shipped as slaves to Haiti and other islands. Slaves practiced this religion but were also forced by the masters who owned them to practice Christianity. Which if you fast forward to modern times, you will see that most adults in Haiti and some cities in the Southern States of North America not only still practice Voodoo but are also Roman Catholic.
