Korean, Korean And South Korea Essay
Korean is one of the world s oldest living languages, and its origins are as obscure as the origin of
the Korean people. (Hallen) Since it s origins, the Korean language has been puzzling to
westerners unfamiliar with this literally foreign language. Most Americans are familiar with
Korea and it s divide because of the Korean war in the 1950 s, yet their culture and language are
not as acknowledged as they should be. Although Korean is only an official language in North and
South Korea, people speak it all over the world. To unlock the mystery of Korean, it is necessary
to look not only at it s geographic and social elements, but also the structure of the language,
including its alphabet and numerical system, and in doing so myself I was able to gain a new
respect for the language.
As mentioned above, Korean is primarily spoken in North and South Korea with 72 million
people, however it expands far beyond it s tiny peninsula. In China, two million people speak
Korean as their fist language and 700,000 people in Japan. This is logical considering Korea sits
right between the two nations. This also explains the heavy influence both nations have on the
language. Other nations where Korean is spoken as a first language include the United States with
two million speakers, and the Russian regions of Kazhstan and Uzbekistan with 500,000 speakers.
(Korean Language History) In the United States, Korean is the third most spoken language in
Virginia and Georgia. (Wideopencountry)

Write An Essay On Adversity
Every person faces adversity differently. In this selection, the question is this: are you a carrot, an
egg, or a coffee bean. The carrot faces challenges hard, seemingly strong, but comes out the other
side soft and weak. The egg is fragile, with a thin shell, goes through its changes to become
hardened on the inside. Finally, there is the coffee bean: through its adversity its boiling water it
changes into something entirely different, while changing the circumstances and conditions around
it. I believe there are all types of these people in the world; many are eggs and carrots, and slightly
fewer coffeebeans. Immense numbers of people don t handle adversity well, and some never truly
learn how to. I personally believe... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has taken me a very long time to get to the point where I can be, but I believe that is how I am
now, more often than not. When I go through personal struggle when I go into that boiling pot of
water that is my mind and my own emotional problems and experiences I always come out
different, and often better for the experience. I learn and grow from my own mishaps and
turmoil. I excel when I m left to push myself: to pull myself up by my own bootstraps, so to
speak. I put myself through my own personal Hell; I am truly my own harshest critic. As a coffee
bean, in numerous situations, I will be ground and crushed into miniscule grains, then slammed
with boiling water and sifted through until there is nothing left. After this, however, the best
aspects of myself are pulled out of me; I may now be raw, barren, and vulnerable, but the most
intriguing and wonderful parts of myself are now pooled and out in the open. I change the
circumstances of my life, the way things are, so that I may once again reach the penultimate point
of my life and push through difficulties to come out the opposite side stronger, more volatile and
flavorful (if perhaps a tad bitter). This is why I believe, that more often than anything else, I am a

Reproducibility In Science Is As Important As Any New...
Reproducibility in science is as important as any new hypothesis or discovery. Currently, many
practitioners believe there is a reproducibility crisis. Despite that scientists conduct sound research,
reproducibility is still very low. In my opinion, irreproducible research should be well considered
as a part of enhanced knowledge since, in part, nature tends to be chaotic and hence irreproducible.
Better controls in the research process, however, can improve comprehension and utility of research
results.

Although irreproducible results may not be readily applicable, it does not necessarily mean that
they are a waste of time, resources or opportunities. Suggestions for enhanced reproducibility are
also highlighted. Insights are mainly biased to natural rather than engineered systems.
The complexity of natural systems
In view of Heisenberg s principle of uncertainty, is it actually possible to reproduce/recapture both
quantity and temporal profile from experiment to experiment or from one individual to another? 19.
Natural systems may have obvious structural and organizational principles. On the other hand,

depending on the state the system and the ability of the researcher to isolate and control all
confounding factors, many research results may turn out to be extremely context specific. In
proteomic studies, for example, proteins are extraordinarily sensitive to environmental changes
besides variation in sample preparation protocols and instrumentation 6,19. Proteomic profiles also

Colonial Canadian Shakespeare

Colonial Canadian Shakespeare: West Meets East at Stratford
In his essay The Regional Theatre System , Czarnecki picks up on the challenge of creating a
national theatre in Canada, but also articulates the central and defining challenge in developing a
unified sense of Canadian identity; Canada, because of its immense span from ocean to ocean, is
inevitably divided into regions distinct from their provincial boundaries. The regional boundaries
which identify the Maritimes as distinct from French Canada and the Prairies as distinct from the
West Coast, for example, imply not only geographical, but also social, cultural and political
differences between these regions. Because Canada is a nation born from British imperialism, ...

This distance between my Western identity and Canada s colonial history was further exaggerated
because I was a French immersion student: my teachers, who were almost all from Quebec, taught
the Quebec curriculum which strongly emphasized the history of la
Nouvelle France with limited mention of Britain s imperial role in early Canada. This emphasis on
Quebec culture and la francophonie left me fluently bilingual and with a fondness for Quebec, but
compounded my Western alienation because British history was under represented. Because of
Calgary s municipal focus on newness and innovation, as opposed to what was perceived as the
Central Canadian emphasis on tradition and history, Shakespeare was read in high school as a
necessary evil, rather than as an iconic part of our Canadian colonial heritage. After all, Alberta and
the other Western provinces, with the exception of British Columbia, did not even join
Confederation until
1905, making my Canadian history much shorter than that of Central Canada, Eastern
Canada or the Maritimes. My deeply rooted regional identity as a Western Canadian complicated
not only my relationship with Britain and Central Canada, but also complicated my relationship to
Shakespeare as a product of this distant mother country .

High School Athletes And Not College Athletes
We hear stories about them in the news. We may even see them on TV. They are student athletes.
They live a busy life trying to balance school and athletics. Some say that their academic grades
suffer due to their time spent on athletics, this is not true. Participating in sports while pursuing an
education can help students promote not only good work ethics but help them achieve academic
success. For the sake of this argument, I will focus strictly on high schoolstudent athletes and not
college student athletes.
Television and other mainstream media makes it seem like sports are all that matter in high
schools and they have no benefit. We have sports in high school for a number of reasons. Some of
the benefits are for the growth of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ripley says Here school is about learning, but it s also about training to compete in games that
majority of kids will never get paid to play. It s about pep rallies, booster clubs, trophy cases and
cheerleaders decorating football players lockers after they fill them with brownies. (Ripley). There
are benefits for student athletes that a class room could not teach. For example, say an student
athlete was awarded team captain of a basketball team. The captain would gain leadership skills
that no textbook, teacher or classroom could teach him. From that experience they are able to take
that talent they have learned and apply it to the classroom and their personal studies. The life skills
that these student athletes are learning are irreplaceable.
Another thing is that being a student athlete brings personal responsibility. They know that they
need to meet certain academic standards they must meet in order to play in the games and practice.
However that reasonability causes them to push themselves and do better than students who do not
participate in sports. A study published in the Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise in
August 2007 said that students who were active in sports performed 10 percent better in core
subjects (math science, social studies and language arts) than those who were not active in sports.
(Chen) This type of academic improvement does not just happen. There are a number of roles that

Effects Of Plastic Surgery Among Teenagers
Plastic Surgery amongst Teenagers is on the rise In the year 2015, where here in the United
States following the lastest celebrities has become an influence on many teens across the Unites
States, what I mean by influence is plastic surgery. You see it everywhere it s on TV, on
billboards, on the radio and all over the magazines. It seems as if everything a well known celebrity
does teens want to do also. And what celebrity has gotten done to enhance herself teens often look
at this as what they should want or get too. But besides the beauty enhancement you can get from

With all these risks, why do people still go through with this dangerous procedure? I don t think
it s worth it. But according to the opposing article www.platicsurgeons.com if patients go through
the procedure the affects will be long term and you will get what you want. In my opinion with
dangerous risks including losing your life it isn t worth it. Plastic surgery may raise self esteem,
but often does not. Many teens don t realize even the most beautiful people, including celebrities,
are insecure about their appearances. And getting plastic surgery cannot fix all of your problems.
Many teens get plastice surgery for unrealistic reason, such as to fit in with other peers or to keep
up with lastest celebrities, or to attempt to improve their physical appearance as said in the article
www.wtvq.com/health the media is the main influence that is at fault. There are all sorts of things
that require maturity and judgment. According to the Wikipedia Encyclopedia the frontal lobe of
the brain does not fully develop until the 20s to 30s. That portion of the brain controls decision
making, and understanding consequences. This is another reason why teenagers should not have
plastic surgery. Therefore teenagers should not undergo the plastic surgery when you are young
and surgeon should not touch the body that is not yet fully grown. Plastic surgery is a dangerous
idea for teenagers as their decision

Home Ownership Is The American Dream !
Introduction
Home ownership is the American dream! It is one of the most costly purchases an individual or
family can make in their lifetime. Some people save until they have cash to purchase however,
many people borrow money from a bank or lending institution; when a person borrows money to
purchase a home the loan is called a mortgage. The lender is called the mortgagee and the borrower
is called the mortgagor; banks have several different types of mortgages: fixed rate mortgage,
adjustable rate mortgage, investment mortgage and much more. Borrowers have to undergo the
lender underwriting process to show financial capability of repaying the mortgage (Makarov
Plantin, 2013). In this article I will use a fictitious person named Julianna, she is in the process of
buying her first home at age 30; I will be her lender and will use mathematical procedures to find
out what is her down payment, principle, installment payment, points (closing cost), mortgage
maturity value and total interest paid.
Background
Julianna s real estate agent found her a home costing $600,000 in Queens, New York; she liked
the property and signed a contract to purchase and deposited $5,000. She is now left with a
balance due of $600,000 subtract $5,000 equal $595,000. She ordered an appraisal and it stated
that the market value of the property was $550,000. The appraiser found 3 properties almost
identical in the area that was recently sold; the 1rst was sold for $500,000, 2nd $550,000 and the

Suffering is centrepiece in Tim Winton s modern Australian classic, Cloudstreet. The novel depicts
characters who struggle to overcome their woes, with various approaches employed by characters
so that they can endure their pain. Winton glorifies the characters able to surpass their struggles
through reconciliation and love, describing them as whole and human beings who acknowledge
that life is the one thing constant in our existence; something to be grateful for. Those unable to
completely conquer their misery do not truly live although they may endure. These characters

Winton s characters who possess tenacity are able to survive their periods of devastation. Haunted
with survivor s guilt and stripped of her faith and son, Oriel battles against the distress she has to
undergo and challenges its presence in her life, eventually learning to forgive and move on. When
Oriel thinks about everything that s been taken from her over the years , she describes it as the
longest subtraction sum invented , growing to admit that since Fish she s been losin the war and

defeat to Fish s state after many years of looking for the answers . The Aussie Battler within Oriel
prohibits her from giving in to her woeful circumstances, ensuring that she lives through to happier
times. Will and determination is one of the methods through which Winton s characters can
continue living in defiance of their torment. Grief is most strongly thwarted by the power of
reconciliation. Rather than fighting against and antagonising flawed relationships that induce
suffering, it is more desirable to forgive and harbour no grudges; effectively bringing an end to the
trauma. Fish s spiritual affliction is appeased this way. Prior to Fish s transcendence, he was
traumatised by the abundance of anguish within Cloudstreet due to his superior

Functional Foods And Its Effect On The Risks Of Chronic...
Functional foods are those foods that are beneficial to health and are able to reduce the risks of
chronic diseases. The interest in functional foods has increased in the recent years as people look
for safer way to improve general health and living. In India, despite of low level of public
awareness compared to western markets, functional foods and ingredients are finding huge growth
as consumers switch on to the promise of healthier foods, beverages and supplements.
On the contrary, due to urbanization the increased demand for ready to eat products at reasonable
costs also increased, particularly the bakery products. But in recent times functional foods are
rapidly increasing in popularity in sectors such as dairy products or confectionery, in bakery it is
still relatively underdeveloped. Bread is one such important staple food and the most widely
consumed bakery product all over the world. In bread making, the use of white flour (refined) has
been increased with an aim of improving the aesthetic value of white bread, which in turn led to
drastic reduction in the nutritional density and fiber content when compared to bread made from
whole grain cereals. In recent years, cereals and its ingredients such as beta glucan, arabinoxylan,
resistant starch, oligosaccharides etc are accepted as functional foods and nutraceuticals. Cereals, in
particular oat and barley, offer another alternative for the production of functional foods. By

Deontological Ethical Analysis of Direct to Consumer Pharmaceutical Marketing
In Deontological ethics, morality of an action is based upon the particular action s adherence to
moral laws independent of their consequences (DeGeorge 62). Direct to consumer marketing of
pharmaceuticals has had heated debate with logical arguments from those for, and for those against
allowing such practices to exist. I do not believe the marketing of the prescription medication to be
solely unethical but more of as a shade of grey in between ethical and unethical moral standards
dependent upon the actions of the individual pharmaceutical companies. Advertising to the general
public can be ethical if the medication truly benefits those in society ... Show more content on

This false sense of security held by the public at large leads the masses to believe in the complete
truthfulness of drug advertisements which could and will lead many consumers to not do their
research on a medication before seeking it out to get it prescribed.
The other area of moral concern for many is in regards to the safety of the general public. The
question being; is it safe for public health to allow pharmaceuticals to advertise and push new
drugs directly to the public? The answer to this isn t clear, in May of 2011 the Congressional
Budget Office released its study; Potential Effects of a Ban on Direct To Consumer Advertising of
New Prescription Drugs. The study was inconclusive, it stated that a moratorium on direct to
consumer advertising could benefit public health by providing more time for possible safety
problems with some drugs to be uncovered, but could also harm public health by delaying the
widespread adoption of useful new drugs (Procon.org).
From an ethical standpoint this depends upon the company advertising the product. If they create a
medicine to help relieve a certain ailment, as long as they disclose the facts, dangers, and risks of
the drug, I believe that they are doing a public service because the advance in modern medicine
can help society as a whole, but if a company produces a

main techniques, and any current research that supports contextual therapy in relation to contextual
theory. While the purpose of this exercise was to demonstrate knowledge of counseling theories not
addressed in class sessions, contextual therapy (which has also been referred to as contextual family

Excluding such information could lead to misrepresenting the factors by which the client
experiences the world and bankrupt the influence of culture on development. Boszormenyi Nagy
stretches facts to include those details about world views that are a product of our own created
reality that is culminated by choice and agency. While a child certainly does not have a choice into
what family they are born into, the parents do have a choice into how they will interact with each
other around that child, such that, inconsistencies or neglect of that healthy relationship could
create for the child a fact that unhealthy conflict is normal or that they must choose sides of
affection (Goldenthal, 2005). Since there is an underlying foundation of psychotherapy present,
contextual therapy accounts for facts that may be present that the client may not be able to bring to
their conscience or that they may be unwilling to acknowledge that were out of their control, but
nevertheless, still occurred (Ruzgyte, 2011).
Psychology. The functioning of the person within was also heavily regarded by Boszormenyi Nagy,
such that his reflections from psychoanalytical theories would illuminate the need to connect the
parts of the individual psyche: cognitive abilities; emotional functioning; instinctual drives; internal
conflicts; moral and intellectual development; and concepts of object relations theory

The Struggles of Mexicans in Mexican American History
Mexico s problems originally began upon the arrival of the Spanish in 1492, as illustrated in
Major Problems in Mexican American History by Zaragosa Vargas as well as in the video
documentary, Chicano!. The sequence of events which date back to the precolonial Spanish days
and take place in Mexico s history eventually provoke the national movement that called for social
justice and equality, especially after the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Then came the

As a result of his research he provides evidence that the large extended family households were
relatively uncommon in the Pre Industrial society. He concluded that 10% of households in
England (1564 1821) include kin beyond the nuclear family. He claims hoe the nuclear family
households may have been a characteristic of much of North West Europe and Laslett argues that
this may have been important factor encouraging the process of industrialisation. An important
aspect of the industrial revolution was the prior existence of the nuclear family facilitating the
movement of workers to urban areas. Although Laslett s Research was seen to be thorough its not
possible to discover from his data how much cooperation occurred between kin who were members
of different households, so the extended families may have therefore been important while
remaining residentially dispersed among several neighbouring households.

Existentialism In Mad Max
Existentialism
1. Give a full description of where the issue discussed was observed. Mad Max is a movie from
1979 that I recently have watched with my brother over a weekend at home. As we were engaged
in entertainment of this movie it was brought to my attention of the worldview that this particular
movie presented to its viewers. This worldview is called Existentialism: a view that indicates that
our lives are meaningless and it is up to us to create our own meaning from the day we are born to
the last breath on earth. This is expressed consistently throughout the entirety of the movie and can
be of concern if taken literally.
2. Give a brief statement as to why this issue was chosen. In today s modern world we encounter
many different types of groups and organizations that seem to take major parts of this worldview
to seemingly get there way or act how they deem fit for their own personal gain or lifestyle.

Cause And Effect Of Climate Change
Climate change is one of the biggest news headlines of today. While there are skeptics that believe
that global warming is just a hoax, there are many undeniable phenomenons happening around the
world. The effects of climate change, in the long run, will be catastrophic if it is left alone. In just
the past two months, there have been four hurricanes that made landfall in North America, and a
wildfire more aggressive than has ever been seen before, ripping through California, killing forty
people and leveling almost six thousand structures. Millions of Americans are displaced due to
these unusually aggressive storms and the fires raging throughout California. Arctic species have
seen massive reductions in their populations, with less food to eat, and less mates to breed with.
The toxicity of the air in urban cities and contamination of waters outside these cities is on the rise.
If the world keeps dismissing the importance of climate change, there will be calamitous
consequences for the future generations. The effects of climate change, if not fixed, will be Arctic
ice melting, reduction in animal populations, habitats threatened, and the air toxicity and seasonal
allergies to humans. The causes include the greenhouse effect and air pollution. In the past decade,
Americans have seen global warmingin the headlines constantly. About 71 percent of American

Christianity And Religion In Beowulf And The Canterbury Tales
Throughout the Middle Ages, religion was a major theme in the literature of that time. Works such
as Beowulf and The Canterbury Tales are examples of this theme in action, but in very different
ways. God is seen purely as goodness in Beowulf, and everything that God approves of is good as
well. Contrarily, The Canterbury Talessatirizes religion by showing members of the church in a
negative manner and debating the teachings of the Bible, the latter particularly in The Wife of Bath
s Prologue. Despite these different takes on Christianity, the characters in both stories sin, yet are
defended. Both Beowulfand The Wife of Bath s Prologue contain different defenses of the
protagonist s sin, to varying degrees of success.
Beowulf s sins revolve around personality traits, namely his boastfulness and greed, however the
author does not acknowledge this sin. First and foremost, it must be made clear that these sins

Ecological Change in New England under Native Americans...
Although the colonial history of New England has been thoroughly researched and taught across all
levels of educational institutes across the United States, the study of its environmental history often
takes a backseat to America s complex and enthralling social and political history. This trend has
been abating in recent decades, given that more Americans have taken an interest in their
environment and conservation, and in response to this new demand the field of environmental
history was initiated by historians like William Cronon, who explores the changes in the New
Englandenvironment under the stewardship of Native Americans and European colonist in Changes
in the Land: Indians, Colonists, and the Ecology of New England. Cronon s work... Show more

The popular view among the colonists regarding their deep ecological footprint was that it was
furnished by an approving God, meaning that they could utilize this blessing as they saw fit. Using
the land to farm and graze animals was in their view, improving the land, and thus another signifier
that they held more of a right to own it, as opposed to the lazier Native Americans who tended to
hunt and gather food more than the colonists. Cronon gives us good insight into the sound
methodology that historians used to determine the environment at that point, from primary sources
describing the environment or various phenomenon, to the presence of various local statutes
dealing with the environment that hinted at the changing state of the colonial settlements and
wilderness. From most accounts, it seems that most colonists were unaware of the complex
relations that existed between them, Native Americans, and the environment. Cronon s work
meticulously details the chasm between the colonial and Native American outlooks on the
environment and on each other. Europeans were grounded in a mercantile economy and judged
the environment by the resources it afforded an aspiring entrepreneur who had to find a way to
turn a profit and repay debts and other capital expenditures (20). Many letters sent back to the Old
World by colonists detailed the abundance of flora

Social Work s Role
In today s society social work plays an extremely important role. With the misfortunes of many,
social workers are there to lend a helping hand and to improve the quality of life to those who
happen to be at a disadvantage and whom are less fortunate. It is the social workers hard work,
dedication, compassion, good heartedness, and strive that allow men, women, children, and families
to overcome obstacles and difficulties all while continuing to make the most out of any given
situation and improve their quality of life.
A social worker is any of various professional activities or methods concretely concerned with
providing social services, especially with the investigation, treatment, and material aid of the
economically, physically, mentally, or socially disadvantaged ( Social work, 2014). In other words,
a social worker values principles and techniques to helping people obtain services, counseling, and
psychotherapy with not only individuals, but with families, and groups to help better themselves. (
Social Work , 2014) Social workers also require the knowledge of human development/behavior,
social and economic, and cultural institutions ( Code of ethics, 2008).
When entering a career in social work, just like any other profession there come responsibilities.
The job of a social worker is often a challenging one ( Job duties and, 2014). A social worker s
primary responsibility is to enhance the well being and help meet the basic human needs of all

Impact of Education Essay
Impact of Education Education is one of the most essential necessities of a personal life because
without education, we would not have a brighter future. In two essays Learning to Read and Write
and A Homemade Education , Malcolm and Douglass describe what they have gone through in
order to become more successful in their pursuits in life. While Malcolm Xlived part of his life in
prison, he spent his time writing numerous definitions from a dictionary amongst the walls and
tables. The elements of the dictionary motivated him to not only become a free man, but a well
educated one at that. Douglass, who also taught himself, began his life in slavery. But after a series

Another impact of achieving an education is that it brings knowledge to one s life. Knowledge is a
powerful benefit for people in their understandings. Both Douglass and Malcolm also recognized
the power of knowledge that impacted them into following education. With great effort,
Malcolm was fascinated with the knowledge he gained I could for the first time pick up a book
and read and now begin to understand what the book was saying (81). He made a progress in
reading to understand the contents of a book even if it is the first time he picked it up. Knowledge
also assisted Douglass in finding the injustice of slavery and motivating him to gain his freedom. In
the essay Learning to Read and Write , he states that the more I read, the more I was lead to abhor
and detest my enslavers. I could regard them in no other light than a band of successful robbers,
who had left their home, and gone to Africa, and stolen us from our homes and in a stargerland
reduced us to slavery. (64). He became cognizant of what fate was in hold for the enslavers. That
idea impacted him to gain more knowledge and escape slavery to share his knowledge and what
must be done. Today, people who want to gain knowledge have to go to school for their education.
People that attend are taught the essential lessons that they need in order to move forward in life.
Out of everyone in my family, I am the only one given the chance to go to college.

Summary Of Plunkitt Of Tammany Hall
The book Plunkitt of Tammany Hall can leave readers with mixed feelings about politics from
Plunkitt s perspective. Plunkitt, himself, used some questionable tactics while he was a
politician and defends what he did; such as the difference between honest graft and dishonest
graft. Plunkitt lived in the world of politics for forty plus years and thrived in the middle of it all
with his political machine, Tammany Hall. The views Plunkitt held differ from those of the
Founding Fathers of the United States of America. Politics was a word that was used flippantly
in Plunkitt s vocabulary. To him, being a politician and living in the world of election and re
election was all a game. He used his status as a politician to gain power, money, and influence on
the people surrounding him. An example of Plunkitt using his status to gain money can be
found in the first chapter of the book. I see my opportunity and I take it. I go to that place and I

In Robin Lakoff s Language and Woman s Place the author Robin tells us her side of the inequity
that women face. She wants to see what she can conclude from her experiences. In this article she
tells us about her first hand accounts of this through introspection (Lakoff 46). Robin tells us about
what language use can tell us about the nature of inequality (Lakoff 45). The author also talks
about the subservient functions of women and the roles that sexes play in society (Lakoff 45).
Robin wants to know if anything can be done for this cause or is this what our society has destined
for women (Lakoff 46). Robin talks about how tag questions avoid coming into conflict about the

This appeals to the rhetorical strategy ethos. This helps pull the reader s attention in and makes
them believe the claims she is making. Having first hand accounts of this experience allows her
article to connect with the readers so they know what she has gone through. The audience can see
the author s credibility through this making it more believable. Showing us her side of the story
lets us know that these problems are real. Explaining to the audience examples of this in everyday
life and language makes the audience feel like something must be done. The author explains to us
that many women are subject to subservient functions (Lakoff 46). The roles the sexes play in
society have a determination in how they are treated Robin states (Lakoff 46). She tells us about
her first hand experiences of this, which cause the reader to sympathize for her (Lakoff 46). The
author thinks that we will find two different ways of discrimination women face in language. The
author explains the way that women are taught to use language and the way that general language
treats them (Lakoff 46). This is where the reader starts to see the problems that women may face.
The rhetorical strategy ethos used helps the reader feel for her cause as if it were happening to
them first hand. This makes the reader aware of what is going on. At this point the audience can

Hurricane Katrina s Impact On New Orleans Essay
Migration, whether permanent or temporary, has always been a traditional response or survival
strategy of people confronting the prospect, impact or aftermath of disasters (Hugo 1996).
However, today, more than ever, the complex nature of disasters such as Hurricane Katrina in the
city of New Orleans, bring with them an enormous potential for the uprooting of large numbers of
people. The increasing complexity of disasters is rooted in the interplay of social and economic
factors in the environment, exacerbating the vulnerability of people and environments and
intensifying their impacts when they occur. Hurricane Katrinas impact on New Orleans was
compounded by an excessive dependence on technology and half a century s assault on the natural
defenses of the environment of southern Louisiana, leaving the city tragically vulnerable. Virtually
the entire population of the city has been displaced, a large proportion of it perhaps permanently,
presenting a host of profound economic, social and psychological challenges to individuals,
communities and all levels of government.
Despite technological and scientific advances in prediction and mitigation, we have seen a serious
increase in both mortality and economic losses from disasters since 1960, particularly in the
developing world. Disasters are, in fact, increasing in impact and scope through the combined
effects of economic, social, demographic, ideological and technological factors. Greater numbers of

The Appeal to Female Dominance: Skyy Vodka The advertisement is specifically directed
towards women in the way that it appeals to what they believe Skyy Vodka can give them. In the
advertisement there is a woman in a black dress leaning back eating olives with a martini glass
between her fingers. On the floor is the Skyy vodka bottle and a man in a suit between her arm
and body who seems to be passed out with his arms spread apart with a tie covering his eyes. The
foreground shows the man womanis in her apartment, while the background is red and in the
upper left hand corner of the page it says #18 She Wins. The first thing the ad demonstrates is
empowered women who are in control of their sexuality and can get what they want in a
relationship. The next thing the Skyy Vodka appeals to is power this is obvious because of the
body language, clothes, red setting and title. The other thing it appeals to is wealth from which is
obvious based on the quality of their surroundings and clothes. The advertisement appeals to women

happened before this scene. While the ad clearly portrays the female as sexually dominant, it is

Terre Haute lies in an area described as a humid, subtropical climate, a Cfa on the Koppen Letter
Code System. This area is a mild, mid latitude climate characterized by warm to hot summers,
precipitation with a summer maximum, and mild winter temperatures. Both Berkeley and Terre
Haute lie within relatively the same latitudes, however, Berkeley lies in an area stabilized by the
poleward migration of the subtropical high and relatively cool water of the Pacific Ocean (Hess,
2013). This brings dry weather to Berkeley. Terre Haute, however, does not benefit from this
stability, and continues to experience precipitation throughout the summer months. In the areas of
the Eastern United States, this effect is also contributed to by the influence of tropical cyclones.
Berkeley, according to www.usclimatedata.com, has its highest precipitation levels during
December thru February, which is typical of Csa climates (Hess, 2013). This peak of rainfall that
is unbalanced with a typical increase of water demand during summer greatly stresses the water
budget, and can result in a sever water deficit during summer months. Californians struggled with
this through the summer of 2014, and according to an article by National Geographic, California
will struggle with a water deficit of the amount necessary to provide water to 1.5 million homes.
This is not only due to the climate of the region, but as it specifically applies to Berkeley,

Benefits Of Technology Essay
Technology is increasingly becoming more prominent in the daily lives of the working class as
well as a child s education. Technology can be very helpful in certain times, but at other times it
seems as if we depend on it more than we are actually learning. Is technology more helpful than
harmful? This seems to be a dispute within this new age technologyworld we live in today.
Certainly, there are ways we can use the internet to help us obtain information, and having the
knowledge at our fingertips does have positive advantages in making our lives easier. However,
there are also large concerns in having this tool due to changing the way we learn, think, obtain
information, and how largely it can influence our daily decisions.

Is technology worth the risk of our children losing the ability to be able to converse with one
another? It is vitally important that we use old tactics like writing our own songs, but blend in
technology by taking notes from musicians or downloading one s own song for others to hear.
On one hand, technology does excite children, and helps them sit still for a lengthy period of
time. On the other hand, children still need to know the importance of being able to effectively
write their own music and develop a sense of self achievement without the aid of internet access.
The teachers in Schools C and D were very clear about the necessity to balance the use of digital
technology with the opportunity to develop other musical skills and undertake other music
activities (130). It is pertinent that we have a well rounded balance using the internet, and a child
s own hidden talent, which is important for self worth. If we are taking everything from someone
else s work, where is the success really coming from, and how can we deem it as our own?
Reading, writing, learning, and speaking proper English is incredibly important, but with the use of
technology our children are losing the ability to obtain and relay information. Due to the use of the
internet and google, children can type in whatever question they have at hand, see the answer,
answer the question, and forget it in a matter of minutes. It is ok to not know everything and try to

Effects of pH on Enzyme Activity
Aim
To investigate the effects of pH on enzyme activity
Research question
To what will pH levels 1,7,12 affect the rate at which liver catalase catalyzes the decomposition of
10ml of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to water (H2O) and oxygen (O2) exemplified by the volume of
foam reached in 1 minute
Hypothesis
Since the optimum pH of liver catalase is approximately 7. I expect the greatest volume of foam to
be achieved at pH of 7 because it is the optimum pH of liver catalase. I also expect to see lower
maximum volumes of foam in pHs 1 and 12
Variables
INDEPENDENT VARIABLE pH (1,7,12) (acidic pHs will be made by diluting concentrated HCL,
alkaline pHs will be made by diluting concentrated NaOH and a neutral pH will come from
distilled water alone)
DEPENDANT VARIABLE
Volume of foam (when H2O2 decomposes it forms H2O and O2 when the oxygen combines with
the foaming agent it produces foam )
Reaction:
H2O2(aq) в†’ H2O (l) + O2 (g)
Controlled variables
What is controlledMethod of controlWhy it is controlled
TemperatureTemperature will be controlled but turning of the AC and the fans closing the windows
and the door during the experiment, also a insulating mat will be placed underneath the reaction
vesselTemperature must be controlled as it has a capability to affect the rate at which the enzyme
will catalyze a reaction. It does this by supplying or taking away the enzymes and the substrate

During the second millennium B.C., pastoral, Aryan speaking tribes migrated from the northwest

In the 1989 elections, although Rajiv Gandhi and Congress won more seats in the 1989 elections

I Am A Third Generation American
Born to Peggy and Edward Garcia on October 4th 1984, I am a third generation American. My
grandfather was born in Mexico and my father was born in New Mexico, while I was born at
Fort Lewis Washington, I am a Soldiers Son. While growing up my father was stationed at
various bases throughout the United States and I was lucky enough to tag along. From an early
age I was always told to do better and more than those who came before me by my mother. From
the age of two till I was five I lived in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. This is where I gained my
southern draw (which still comes out if I happen to be speaking to someone else who has one).
At the age of six to nine I had the opportunity to live in Anchorage, Alaska. This is where I
learned to want to always be outside exploring or building things. At the age of 10 my father was
stationed to Fort Hood, Texas where I followed suit. Texas would eventually be where I would
call home. I went to middle school at Smith Middle School and High School at Ellison High
School. I graduated Ellison High School in 2002 and worked various jobs from a warehouse
manager to a janitor. While some of the management jobs paid well they did not have any sense
of fulfillment or pride. Just after graduating High School I began to date my now wife Marissa.
We had met at a BBQ that one of my fathers soldiers had been throwing. Both her father and my

Using this model, it is expected that the participants would spend more time fixating on the
images of the dustpan and comb because of their phonetic similarities as they both begin with
[pОµ ]. Then as the word progresses, they will retrieve the target word, the dustpan, and fixate
their eyes on the image. The second goal of the first experiment was to see how the gendered
articles would influence the lexical activation during word recognition. In this trial, using
phonologically distinct words, a critical display could be composed of the target word le cerf
volant (the kite), the paired distractor la coccinelle (the ladybug), and two competitors le dauphin
(the dolphin) and la tomate (the tomato). Upon hearing the beginning of the utterance le , the
participant is expected to fixate on both the images of the target, the kite, and the masculine
competitor, the dolphin. If the participant does indeed do this, it shows that the matching gender
marked articles are being accessed at the start of the utterance and as more sound input is
processed, the target word gets more activated, eventually retrieving the correct word and fixating
on the right image. c) Figure 5 illustrates the main results of Experiment 2, displaying the
probability of fixation over time in milliseconds for the target, cohort competitor, and the average of
the distractors. The trends in the

What Does Inherit The Wind Symbolize
Three symbols from the play and how they illustrate an idea or a theme. Many people often do not
attempt to understand the meaning of what a symbol represents. In the play Inherit The Wind, a
symbol represents something more abstract or different than what the reader originally had thought.
Many symbols were used throughout this play, like the monkey, which symbolizes evolution and
the bizarreness and extravagance of the trial. Similarly, the golden dancer symbolizes that all that
glitters is not gold and that looks can be deceiving. Furthermore, reverend Brown symbolizes the
towns beliefs and is an example of someone who is overly overzealous. Evidently, Inherit The

Due to the trial being on evolution and the talk of humans evolving from the ancestry of
monkeys. While on the stand Howard says, Man was sort of evoluted. From the Old World
Monkeys (Lawrence and Lee 69). This shows that we are indeed of ancestry to monkeys and the
role monkeys play in all this. Talking of monkeys is talking about evolution and how we
evolved. In addition, a monkey is brought in as a joke and to show how ludicrous it seemed.
Hornbeck mocks and says to the monkey, Oh. Excuse me. I must be thinking of another Elijah.
(An ORGAN GRINDER enters, with a live monkey on a string. Hornbeck spies the monkey
gleefully; he greets the monk with arms outstretched) Grandpa! (Crosses to the monkey, bends
down and shakes the monkey s hand) Welcome to Hillsboro, sir! Have you come to testify for the
defense Or for the prosecution? (The monkey, oddly enough, doesn t answer) No comment? That s

The Green Curve Of The Graph
Our planet is experiencing a level of climate changes previously unreached. Through the analysis of
ice cores, tree rings, glacier lengths, pollen remains and ocean sediments (EPA, 2016), scientists
have been able to piece together the Earth s climate for roughly the last million years (some claim
several millions of years). Through this research and the study of historic environmental events, it
has been determined that the Earths climate changes from warmer to cooler over thousands of
years due to natural reasons such as changes in solar energy, volcanic eruptions, and natural
changes in the emission of greenhouse gases (EPA, 2016). However, in the last ~150 years or so,
this trend has deviated severely due to human causes. This graph obtained from the EPA (EPA,
2016), shows the change in global temperatures from the last century. The green curve of the graph
depicts the natural factors that influence climate on Earth. The blue curve of the graph depicts the
natural factors plus the human factors that s influence climate on Earth. Through the inclusion of
human factors, there is a drastic increase in temperature change. Many greenhouse gases are fund
pollutants (Tietenberg Lewis, 2015), which can be reintegrated back into the environment over a
period of time. However, during the time it takes for them to be recycled back, these gases sit in
the Earth s atmosphere. The increased emission of greenhouse gases has caused a greenhouse effect
(EPA, 2016). Heat from the

Armed And Pilgrimage By Jeffrey Gettleman Analysis
Do you remember being a kid watching the news with your parents? Imagine being back there in
your parents room watching the anchors talk about world news while you read the sunday comics.
As you flip the pages of the humorous part of the newspaper you hear the anchors talking about
violence. You vaguely hear of the people caught up in the violence. When reading Armed Underage
and The Charge: Genocide there a connection. In the two passages titled Armed Underage By
Jeffrey Gettleman and The Charge: Genocide By Lydia Polgreen there are multiple claims that can
be made off this connection. One that can be reasonably made is violence in other nations affects

Although some think otherwise the claim that violence in other nations affects the people of the
nations negatively can still be made.
As stated before one reason why violence in other nations affects the people of the nations
negatively is true is because of child labor that can be seen. Jeffrey Gettleman supports this
claim in his passage when he states, It s not a new problem. The Germans drafted adolescents
when they got desperate toward the end of World War II. So did Iran, which used boys as young
as 12 to clear minefields during the Iran Iraq War in the 1980s. In summarization this supports the
claim that violence affects citizens negatively by the way the text explicitly talks of child labor.
Child labor is a negative that citizens face because of violence it forces children to work in this case
for several military forces which threatens them. Additionally the claim that violence in other
nations affects the people of the nations negatively Is supported in the text when it states In the
Philippines and southern Thailand, children are being recruited by rebel groups. In essence the

Bessie Smith Biography
On October 29, 1929, later to be known as the notorious Black Tuesday, the stock market crashed,
and the United States was thrust into the Great Depression. Companies became bankrupt one after
another, resulting in more and more Americans being laid off. Soon, it became a common sight
to see large crowds of homeless people waiting outside of soup kitchens and bread lines, no matter
what city or town you were in. It was during this dark period of despair and misery that Bessie
Smith, the Empress of the Blues, recorded one of her most well known and loved songs, Nobody
Knows You When You re Down and Out. Bessie Smith s song reflected the hearts and minds of
millions of Americans during that somber period. Smith sings Nobody knows you/... Show more

Their success allowed them to spend money freely on things like bootleg whiskey, champagne and
wine. Sadly, this did not last long for either person for once again they were back at the bottom,
wishing that they were back at the top.
With the peoples changing taste in music and Smith s alcoholic tendencies, it seemed unlikely
that her career would ever pick back up, but near the end of the 1930s, her career was on the rise
with her recording and performing again. Unfortunately, Smith did not get to enjoy her
comeback. On September 26, 1937, she was killed in a car accident. She hit her old Packard with a
parked truck near Coahoma, Mississippi, between Clarksdale and Memphis and injured herself
so severely that one of her arms was nearly severed off her body. Since there was no record of her
exact birth date, it was estimated that she was about 43 years old when she died (History.com Staff

My Complicated Family History
The mix of my complicated family history and my strong supportive mother have shaped me into
the person that I am today. My biological father, Clint, battled with a secret drug addiction that my
sweet mother knew nothing about until it was too late. When I was only a year old, the drug
addiction had gotten the best of Clint and he made the decision to take his own life, leaving me and
my motherheart broken. Clint s choices impacted my life in such ways that I cannot explain.
Growing up, it was just me and my mother until I was four, however, in this time we took the bad
situation that we were in and we did not let it get the best of us. We chose to move forward and to
take positive things from this horrific time. We learned through this experience that life goes on. No
matter how hard the situation is, you must move on. Learning this mentality at such a young age
has taught me that I cannot fret the small things, I have to look at the bigger picture because that is
what really matters. My mother is truly such an amazing woman and her guidance has shaped me
into the young woman that I am. We have battled through so many hardships together but she has
always taught me that I can and will get through everything life throws at me. My mother could
have chosen to give up when my biological... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

relationships to work out like the way our families did, but it is truly a gift from God. I refer to
Scott as my father, and he treats me no different than he treats his biological son, and my best
friend Riley. I catch myself feeling as though I have a relatively normal life, but when I take a step
back and look, my life had the opportunity to go in a very negative direction and truthfully I had a
good reason for it to so. However, my mother and I chose to move on and today we do live a
relatively normal day to day

English Essay We Are Virginia Tech
We Are Virginia Tech Speaking is form of art that can either be a natural gift or a practiced
talent. Much like there are several different ways a person can draw: cartooning, free hand, or
realistic, there are many ways in which a person can speak. Nikki Giovanni s speech We Are
Virginia Tech makes people cry, rejoice, and move on. A speech is one form of art that can
evoke these types of emotions from people. In Nikki Giovanni s poem We Are Virginia Tech,
which was spoken at a memorial ceremony for Virginia Tech shooting victims, she uses her tone
and a repetition of words to make her speech very powerful. The tone of her voice is very distinct,
she speaks with poise and confidence, while remaining remorseful but positive... Show more content

People in the audience who lost close loved ones in this disaster may not think the other worldly
tragedies Giovanni describes are of the same magnitude as this. For others though these images
she gives may help them connect with the loss some are experiencing. Speeches can affect
people in different ways, some speeches will inspire you, others will make you reflect on your
own life, some will teach you a life lesson, but Nikki Giovanni s poem was meant to bring
together a group of disheartened people. Giovanni s speech did not affect me as intensely as it
did to the families of the victims who actually saw her give the speech. Similar to whether you
are seeing a photo of a piece of artwork or seeing it in person, seeing or hearing a recording of a
speech it will affect you differently. Sontag says, real art has the capacity to make us nervous
(Sontag 759). This speech is meant to bring out the sadness, but also the hope for a better future
that people are feeling. Preston Risser said, her poem brought out the hurt people were feeling
and brought awareness to the situation at hand. As seen in the video people are either crying
after she is finished, or standing up with a newfound inspiration to stand tall and put this tragedy
in the past. The way a piece of art might make you feel does not have to be displayed by some
physical expression, it can be an emotion that is kept inside. In relation to how Nikki

Code Of Ethics And The Laws Of The Accounting Profession...
Critically reflect on the arguments as to why a code of ethics is essential to support the regulation
of the accounting profession in New Zealand.
Introduction
Code of Ethics display the ideal qualities that one should follow and demonstrate, in the accounting
profession. It lays down the expected standards, and are based on personal characteristics and
behavior. According to New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants Act 1996 the five
fundamental principles in the Code of Ethics are integrity, objectivity, professional competence and
due care, confidentiality and professional behavior (NZICA, 2013). These five principles aim at
guiding an accountant in a moralistic way. Although it highlights the general expectations of an
accountant, it is designed to benefit the wider accounting network. The Code of Ethics can also be
thought of as a perfect role model, which accountants use to compare themselves against. The Code
of Ethics is vital to the accounting profession because it helps keep a controlled, safe and positive
working environment.
Discussion
Integrity is one of the fundamental principle, which is responsible for securing and maintaining
confidence among the public, and also internally through professionalism. In the Code of Ethics,
integrity is defined to be, the key to building a network of good trust, and also personal
characteristics that distances one from taking advantage personally (Velayutham,2003).Generally
we can assume that integrity is directly

Essay Differring Religions In Todays
Differring Religions
Each religious group possesses its own individual world view. Two groups, which vary a great
deal when reflecting upon their world views are the Native Americans and the Puritans. While one
group holds one set of standards and beliefs to be true, the other group abides by a completely
opposite set of ideas. The Native American religion functions using its own world view. Unlike in
Western religions, the Native American religion does not have certain places in which they need to
be more religious than others do. In the Native American religion there is no notion of essential
monotheism. There is no one true god in their religion; therefore they are free to have open ended
worship. The Native American religion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This entire reading explains why the French men have such a great hatred of the Native Americans,
however they will continue to try to convert the Native American people to Christian and Catholic
belief. Many of the world views of the Native American religion are quite different from those of the
Puritans. The Puritan religion was once the central part of American identity. Unlike the Native
Americans, the Puritans were a highly intellectual group. They had systems of meticulously written
doctrines concerning the Renaissance. The Puritans also had a sense of adventure, which serves a
higher intent. By having this characteristic they seek to create a better society. This is the opposite
of what the French believed the Native Americans to be doing. According to the French reading
they are wanderers, with nothing to attach them to a place, neither homes nor relationships, neither
possessions nor love of country. This description is on the opposite end of the spectrum from the
Puritan life. The Puritans attribute their want for a better society to their pioneering spirit. They
had the courage to come from England and settle their families in a new place and begin an entire
new life with no guarantee of success. Puritans focus their religious beliefs around the notion of the
covenant. This is yet another example of the difference between Puritan and Native American world
views. The

  • 2. Korean, Korean And South Korea Essay Korean is one of the world s oldest living languages, and its origins are as obscure as the origin of the Korean people. (Hallen) Since it s origins, the Korean language has been puzzling to westerners unfamiliar with this literally foreign language. Most Americans are familiar with Korea and it s divide because of the Korean war in the 1950 s, yet their culture and language are not as acknowledged as they should be. Although Korean is only an official language in North and South Korea, people speak it all over the world. To unlock the mystery of Korean, it is necessary to look not only at it s geographic and social elements, but also the structure of the language, including its alphabet and numerical system, and in doing so myself I was able to gain a new respect for the language. As mentioned above, Korean is primarily spoken in North and South Korea with 72 million people, however it expands far beyond it s tiny peninsula. In China, two million people speak Korean as their fist language and 700,000 people in Japan. This is logical considering Korea sits right between the two nations. This also explains the heavy influence both nations have on the language. Other nations where Korean is spoken as a first language include the United States with two million speakers, and the Russian regions of Kazhstan and Uzbekistan with 500,000 speakers. (Korean Language History) In the United States, Korean is the third most spoken language in Virginia and Georgia. (Wideopencountry) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Write An Essay On Adversity Every person faces adversity differently. In this selection, the question is this: are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean. The carrot faces challenges hard, seemingly strong, but comes out the other side soft and weak. The egg is fragile, with a thin shell, goes through its changes to become hardened on the inside. Finally, there is the coffee bean: through its adversity its boiling water it changes into something entirely different, while changing the circumstances and conditions around it. I believe there are all types of these people in the world; many are eggs and carrots, and slightly fewer coffeebeans. Immense numbers of people don t handle adversity well, and some never truly learn how to. I personally believe... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It has taken me a very long time to get to the point where I can be, but I believe that is how I am now, more often than not. When I go through personal struggle when I go into that boiling pot of water that is my mind and my own emotional problems and experiences I always come out different, and often better for the experience. I learn and grow from my own mishaps and turmoil. I excel when I m left to push myself: to pull myself up by my own bootstraps, so to speak. I put myself through my own personal Hell; I am truly my own harshest critic. As a coffee bean, in numerous situations, I will be ground and crushed into miniscule grains, then slammed with boiling water and sifted through until there is nothing left. After this, however, the best aspects of myself are pulled out of me; I may now be raw, barren, and vulnerable, but the most intriguing and wonderful parts of myself are now pooled and out in the open. I change the circumstances of my life, the way things are, so that I may once again reach the penultimate point of my life and push through difficulties to come out the opposite side stronger, more volatile and flavorful (if perhaps a tad bitter). This is why I believe, that more often than anything else, I am a coffee ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Reproducibility In Science Is As Important As Any New... Reproducibility in science is as important as any new hypothesis or discovery. Currently, many practitioners believe there is a reproducibility crisis. Despite that scientists conduct sound research, reproducibility is still very low. In my opinion, irreproducible research should be well considered as a part of enhanced knowledge since, in part, nature tends to be chaotic and hence irreproducible. Better controls in the research process, however, can improve comprehension and utility of research results. Keywords; Research, irreproducibility, application Introduction Researchers recognize reproducibility as the core of science and the path to cumulative knowledge (Freedman et al., 2015,2,3. Reproducibility reflects the fundamental ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although irreproducible results may not be readily applicable, it does not necessarily mean that they are a waste of time, resources or opportunities. Suggestions for enhanced reproducibility are also highlighted. Insights are mainly biased to natural rather than engineered systems. The complexity of natural systems In view of Heisenberg s principle of uncertainty, is it actually possible to reproduce/recapture both quantity and temporal profile from experiment to experiment or from one individual to another? 19. Natural systems may have obvious structural and organizational principles. On the other hand, spatial and temporal interactions between external and internal sub components, them too chaotic11,16 to be understood by independently studying isolated components. Therefore, depending on the state the system and the ability of the researcher to isolate and control all confounding factors, many research results may turn out to be extremely context specific. In proteomic studies, for example, proteins are extraordinarily sensitive to environmental changes besides variation in sample preparation protocols and instrumentation 6,19. Proteomic profiles also differ not only from one individual to another but also from one moment to the next19,20. Yet similar stochastic, unique or rare effects are of crucial importance in many biological processes. The fact that studies ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Colonial Canadian Shakespeare 1 Colonial Canadian Shakespeare: West Meets East at Stratford In his essay The Regional Theatre System , Czarnecki picks up on the challenge of creating a national theatre in Canada, but also articulates the central and defining challenge in developing a unified sense of Canadian identity; Canada, because of its immense span from ocean to ocean, is inevitably divided into regions distinct from their provincial boundaries. The regional boundaries which identify the Maritimes as distinct from French Canada and the Prairies as distinct from the West Coast, for example, imply not only geographical, but also social, cultural and political differences between these regions. Because Canada is a nation born from British imperialism, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This distance between my Western identity and Canada s colonial history was further exaggerated because I was a French immersion student: my teachers, who were almost all from Quebec, taught the Quebec curriculum which strongly emphasized the history of la Nouvelle France with limited mention of Britain s imperial role in early Canada. This emphasis on Quebec culture and la francophonie left me fluently bilingual and with a fondness for Quebec, but compounded my Western alienation because British history was under represented. Because of Calgary s municipal focus on newness and innovation, as opposed to what was perceived as the Central Canadian emphasis on tradition and history, Shakespeare was read in high school as a necessary evil, rather than as an iconic part of our Canadian colonial heritage. After all, Alberta and the other Western provinces, with the exception of British Columbia, did not even join Confederation until 1905, making my Canadian history much shorter than that of Central Canada, Eastern Canada or the Maritimes. My deeply rooted regional identity as a Western Canadian complicated not only my relationship with Britain and Central Canada, but also complicated my relationship to Shakespeare as a product of this distant mother country . 4 The production of Hamlet1 that I saw ... • 6. High School Athletes And Not College Athletes We hear stories about them in the news. We may even see them on TV. They are student athletes. They live a busy life trying to balance school and athletics. Some say that their academic grades suffer due to their time spent on athletics, this is not true. Participating in sports while pursuing an education can help students promote not only good work ethics but help them achieve academic success. For the sake of this argument, I will focus strictly on high schoolstudent athletes and not college student athletes. Television and other mainstream media makes it seem like sports are all that matter in high schools and they have no benefit. We have sports in high school for a number of reasons. Some of the benefits are for the growth of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ripley says Here school is about learning, but it s also about training to compete in games that majority of kids will never get paid to play. It s about pep rallies, booster clubs, trophy cases and cheerleaders decorating football players lockers after they fill them with brownies. (Ripley). There are benefits for student athletes that a class room could not teach. For example, say an student athlete was awarded team captain of a basketball team. The captain would gain leadership skills that no textbook, teacher or classroom could teach him. From that experience they are able to take that talent they have learned and apply it to the classroom and their personal studies. The life skills that these student athletes are learning are irreplaceable. Another thing is that being a student athlete brings personal responsibility. They know that they need to meet certain academic standards they must meet in order to play in the games and practice. However that reasonability causes them to push themselves and do better than students who do not participate in sports. A study published in the Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise in August 2007 said that students who were active in sports performed 10 percent better in core subjects (math science, social studies and language arts) than those who were not active in sports. (Chen) This type of academic improvement does not just happen. There are a number of roles that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Effects Of Plastic Surgery Among Teenagers Plastic Surgery amongst Teenagers is on the rise In the year 2015, where here in the United States following the lastest celebrities has become an influence on many teens across the Unites States, what I mean by influence is plastic surgery. You see it everywhere it s on TV, on billboards, on the radio and all over the magazines. It seems as if everything a well known celebrity does teens want to do also. And what celebrity has gotten done to enhance herself teens often look at this as what they should want or get too. But besides the beauty enhancement you can get from plastic surgerythere are many downfalls to surgery that many teens often forget about or don t know ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With all these risks, why do people still go through with this dangerous procedure? I don t think it s worth it. But according to the opposing article www.platicsurgeons.com if patients go through the procedure the affects will be long term and you will get what you want. In my opinion with dangerous risks including losing your life it isn t worth it. Plastic surgery may raise self esteem, but often does not. Many teens don t realize even the most beautiful people, including celebrities, are insecure about their appearances. And getting plastic surgery cannot fix all of your problems. Many teens get plastice surgery for unrealistic reason, such as to fit in with other peers or to keep up with lastest celebrities, or to attempt to improve their physical appearance as said in the article www.wtvq.com/health the media is the main influence that is at fault. There are all sorts of things that require maturity and judgment. According to the Wikipedia Encyclopedia the frontal lobe of the brain does not fully develop until the 20s to 30s. That portion of the brain controls decision making, and understanding consequences. This is another reason why teenagers should not have plastic surgery. Therefore teenagers should not undergo the plastic surgery when you are young and surgeon should not touch the body that is not yet fully grown. Plastic surgery is a dangerous idea for teenagers as their decision ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Home Ownership Is The American Dream ! Introduction Home ownership is the American dream! It is one of the most costly purchases an individual or family can make in their lifetime. Some people save until they have cash to purchase however, many people borrow money from a bank or lending institution; when a person borrows money to purchase a home the loan is called a mortgage. The lender is called the mortgagee and the borrower is called the mortgagor; banks have several different types of mortgages: fixed rate mortgage, adjustable rate mortgage, investment mortgage and much more. Borrowers have to undergo the lender underwriting process to show financial capability of repaying the mortgage (Makarov Plantin, 2013). In this article I will use a fictitious person named Julianna, she is in the process of buying her first home at age 30; I will be her lender and will use mathematical procedures to find out what is her down payment, principle, installment payment, points (closing cost), mortgage maturity value and total interest paid. Background Julianna s real estate agent found her a home costing $600,000 in Queens, New York; she liked the property and signed a contract to purchase and deposited $5,000. She is now left with a balance due of $600,000 subtract $5,000 equal $595,000. She ordered an appraisal and it stated that the market value of the property was $550,000. The novel depicts characters who struggle to overcome their woes, with various approaches employed by characters so that they can endure their pain. Winton glorifies the characters able to surpass their struggles through reconciliation and love, describing them as whole and human beings who acknowledge that life is the one thing constant in our existence; something to be grateful for. Those unable to completely conquer their misery do not truly live although they may endure. These characters either are so focussed on battling against pain, they cannot resolve it at the source, or chose a path of self ruin and are diminished to shadows , eventually... Haunted with survivor s guilt and stripped of her faith and son, Oriel battles against the distress she has to undergo and challenges its presence in her life, eventually learning to forgive and move on. When Oriel thinks about everything that s been taken from her over the years , she describes it as the longest subtraction sum invented , growing to admit that since Fish she s been losin the war and lost [her] bearing[s] . Despite this, Oriel stays to true to her reputation as a fighter , only conceding defeat to Fish s state after many years of looking for the answers . The Aussie Battler within Oriel prohibits her from giving in to her woeful circumstances, ensuring that she lives through to happier times. Will and determination is one of the methods through which Winton s characters can continue living in defiance of their torment. Grief is most strongly thwarted by the power of reconciliation. Rather than fighting against and antagonising flawed relationships that induce suffering, it is more desirable to forgive and harbour no grudges; effectively bringing an end to the trauma. Fish s spiritual affliction is appeased this way. Prior to Fish s transcendence, he was traumatised by the abundance of anguish within Cloudstreet due to his superior ... • 10. Functional Foods And Its Effect On The Risks Of Chronic... Functional foods are those foods that are beneficial to health and are able to reduce the risks of chronic diseases. The interest in functional foods has increased in the recent years as people look for safer way to improve general health and living. In India, despite of low level of public awareness compared to western markets, functional foods and ingredients are finding huge growth as consumers switch on to the promise of healthier foods, beverages and supplements. On the contrary, due to urbanization the increased demand for ready to eat products at reasonable costs also increased, particularly the bakery products. But in recent times functional foods are rapidly increasing in popularity in sectors such as dairy products or confectionery, in bakery it is still relatively underdeveloped. Bread is one such important staple food and the most widely consumed bakery product all over the world. In bread making, the use of white flour (refined) has been increased with an aim of improving the aesthetic value of white bread, which in turn led to drastic reduction in the nutritional density and fiber content when compared to bread made from whole grain cereals. In recent years, cereals and its ingredients such as beta glucan, arabinoxylan, resistant starch, oligosaccharides etc are accepted as functional foods and nutraceuticals. • 12. Deontological Ethical Analysis of Direct-to-Consumer... Deontological Ethical Analysis of Direct to Consumer Pharmaceutical Marketing In Deontological ethics, morality of an action is based upon the particular action s adherence to moral laws independent of their consequences (DeGeorge 62). Direct to consumer marketing of pharmaceuticals has had heated debate with logical arguments from those for, and for those against allowing such practices to exist. I do not believe the marketing of the prescription medication to be solely unethical but more of as a shade of grey in between ethical and unethical moral standards dependent upon the actions of the individual pharmaceutical companies. Advertising to the general public can be ethical if the medication truly benefits those in society ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This false sense of security held by the public at large leads the masses to believe in the complete truthfulness of drug advertisements which could and will lead many consumers to not do their research on a medication before seeking it out to get it prescribed. The other area of moral concern for many is in regards to the safety of the general public. The question being; is it safe for public health to allow pharmaceuticals to advertise and push new drugs directly to the public? The answer to this isn t clear, in May of 2011 the Congressional Budget Office released its study; Potential Effects of a Ban on Direct To Consumer Advertising of New Prescription Drugs. The study was inconclusive, it stated that a moratorium on direct to consumer advertising could benefit public health by providing more time for possible safety problems with some drugs to be uncovered, but could also harm public health by delaying the widespread adoption of useful new drugs (Procon.org). From an ethical standpoint this depends upon the company advertising the product. If they create a medicine to help relieve a certain ailment, as long as they disclose the facts, dangers, and risks of the drug, I believe that they are doing a public service because the advance in modern medicine can help society as a whole, but if a company produces a ... While the purpose of this exercise was to demonstrate knowledge of counseling theories not addressed in class sessions, contextual therapy (which has also been referred to as contextual family therapyin prior literature) is not per se a theory as much as it is a method of therapy based on Ivan Boszormenyi Nagy s contextual theory. Excluding such information could lead to misrepresenting the factors by which the client experiences the world and bankrupt the influence of culture on development. Boszormenyi Nagy stretches facts to include those details about world views that are a product of our own created reality that is culminated by choice and agency. While a child certainly does not have a choice into what family they are born into, the parents do have a choice into how they will interact with each other around that child, such that, inconsistencies or neglect of that healthy relationship could create for the child a fact that unhealthy conflict is normal or that they must choose sides of affection (Goldenthal, 2005). Since there is an underlying foundation of psychotherapy present, contextual therapy accounts for facts that may be present that the client may not be able to bring to their conscience or that they may be unwilling to acknowledge that were out of their control, but nevertheless, still occurred (Ruzgyte, 2011). The sequence of events which date back to the precolonial Spanish days and take place in Mexico s history eventually provoke the national movement that called for social justice and equality, especially after the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. An important aspect of the industrial revolution was the prior existence of the nuclear family facilitating the movement of workers to urban areas. Although Laslett s Research was seen to be thorough its not possible to discover from his data how much cooperation occurred between kin who were members of different households, so the extended families may have therefore been important while remaining residentially dispersed among several neighbouring households. In just the past two months, there have been four hurricanes that made landfall in North America, and a wildfire more aggressive than has ever been seen before, ripping through California, killing forty people and leveling almost six thousand structures. • 20. Christianity And Religion In Beowulf And The Canterbury Tales Throughout the Middle Ages, religion was a major theme in the literature of that time. Works such as Beowulf and The Canterbury Tales are examples of this theme in action, but in very different ways. God is seen purely as goodness in Beowulf, and everything that God approves of is good as well. Contrarily, The Canterbury Talessatirizes religion by showing members of the church in a negative manner and debating the teachings of the Bible, the latter particularly in The Wife of Bath s Prologue. Despite these different takes on Christianity, the characters in both stories sin, yet are defended. Both Beowulfand The Wife of Bath s Prologue contain different defenses of the protagonist s sin, to varying degrees of success. Beowulf s sins revolve around personality traits, namely his boastfulness and greed, however the author does not acknowledge this sin. First and foremost, it must be made clear that these sins truly exist in Beowulf and are in opposition to Christian morals, regardless of whether or not the author condemns them. Upon his arrival in Heorot, Beowulf s conversation with Unferth demonstrates how his pride and boastfulness is integral to his reputation. Although the colonial history of New England has been thoroughly researched and taught across all levels of educational institutes across the United States, the study of its environmental history often takes a backseat to America s complex and enthralling social and political history. This trend has been abating in recent decades, given that more Americans have taken an interest in their environment and conservation, and in response to this new demand the field of environmental history was initiated by historians like William Cronon, who explores the changes in the New Englandenvironment under the stewardship of Native Americans and European colonist in Changes in the Land: Indians, Colonists, and the Ecology of New England. The popular view among the colonists regarding their deep ecological footprint was that it was furnished by an approving God, meaning that they could utilize this blessing as they saw fit. Using the land to farm and graze animals was in their view, improving the land, and thus another signifier that they held more of a right to own it, as opposed to the lazier Native Americans who tended to hunt and gather food more than the colonists. Cronon gives us good insight into the sound methodology that historians used to determine the environment at that point, from primary sources describing the environment or various phenomenon, to the presence of various local statutes dealing with the environment that hinted at the changing state of the colonial settlements and wilderness. From most accounts, it seems that most colonists were unaware of the complex relations that existed between them, Native Americans, and the environment. Cronon s work meticulously details the chasm between the colonial and Native American outlooks on the environment and on each other. Europeans were grounded in a mercantile economy and judged the environment by the resources it afforded an aspiring entrepreneur who had to find a way to turn a profit and repay debts and other capital expenditures (20). It is vitally important that we use old tactics like writing our own songs, but blend in technology by taking notes from musicians or downloading one s own song for others to hear. On one hand, technology does excite children, and helps them sit still for a lengthy period of time. On the other hand, children still need to know the importance of being able to effectively write their own music and develop a sense of self achievement without the aid of internet access. The teachers in Schools C and D were very clear about the necessity to balance the use of digital technology with the opportunity to develop other musical skills and undertake other music activities (130). Due to the use of the internet and google, children can type in whatever question they have at hand, see the answer, answer the question, and forget it in a matter of minutes. Effects of pH on Enzyme Activity Aim To investigate the effects of pH on enzyme activity Research question To what will pH levels 1,7,12 affect the rate at which liver catalase catalyzes the decomposition of 10ml of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to water (H2O) and oxygen (O2) exemplified by the volume of foam reached in 1 minute Hypothesis Since the optimum pH of liver catalase is approximately 7. I expect the greatest volume of foam to be achieved at pH of 7 because it is the optimum pH of liver catalase. I also expect to see lower maximum volumes of foam in pHs 1 and 12 Variables INDEPENDENT VARIABLE pH (1,7,12) (acidic pHs will be made by diluting concentrated HCL, alkaline pHs will be made by diluting concentrated NaOH and a neutral pH will come from distilled water alone) DEPENDANT VARIABLE Volume of foam (when H2O2 decomposes it forms H2O and O2 when the oxygen combines with the foaming agent it produces foam ) Reaction: H2O2(aq) в†’ H2O (l) + O2 (g) Controlled variables What is controlledMethod of controlWhy it is controlled TemperatureTemperature will be controlled but turning of the AC and the fans closing the windows and the door during the experiment, also a insulating mat will be placed underneath the reaction vesselTemperature must be controlled as it has a capability to affect the rate at which the enzyme will catalyze a reaction. First off, some evidence that proves Mrs. Van Bliven stole the necklace is how the glass was broken from the inside. This is important because, the broken glass made it look like someone broke in. Also nobody could of had access inside because the door was locked. This reason is important because there was no other evidence of Schmidt in the room, for the same reason. Adding to that there was clear evidence that someone was looking for the necklace which was most likely framed by Mrs. Van Bliven. An overview : The people of India have had a continuous civilization since 2500 B.C., when the inhabitants of the Indus River valley developed an urban culture based on commerce and sustained by agricultural trade. My grandfather was born in Mexico and my father was born in New Mexico, while I was born at Fort Lewis Washington, I am a Soldiers Son. While growing up my father was stationed at various bases throughout the United States and I was lucky enough to tag along. From an early age I was always told to do better and more than those who came before me by my mother. From the age of two till I was five I lived in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. This is where I gained my southern draw (which still comes out if I happen to be speaking to someone else who has one). At the age of six to nine I had the opportunity to live in Anchorage, Alaska. This is where I learned to want to always be outside exploring or building things. At the age of 10 my father was stationed to Fort Hood, Texas where I followed suit. Texas would eventually be where I would call home. I went to middle school at Smith Middle School and High School at Ellison High School. I graduated Ellison High School in 2002 and worked various jobs from a warehouse manager to a janitor. While some of the management jobs paid well they did not have any sense of fulfillment or pride. The Down Information Processing Occurs a) Top down information processing occurs when an individual uses previous knowledge, such as the context of a situation, to recognize and identify patterns when making a decision. In this study, the top down information that the researchers looked at was whether or not gender marked definite articles in French would affect lexical activation during spoken word recognition. A critical display would consist of four images, a target, cohort competitor, and two distractors. For example, using the materials from Appendix A, a target word could be couronne crown in English, the cohort competitor would be couteau knife in English, and the distractors would be chaussure shoe and lapin rabbit . Using this model, it is expected that the participants would spend more time fixating on the images of the dustpan and comb because of their phonetic similarities as they both begin with [pОµ ]. Then as the word progresses, they will retrieve the target word, the dustpan, and fixate their eyes on the image. The second goal of the first experiment was to see how the gendered articles would influence the lexical activation during word recognition. In this trial, using phonologically distinct words, a critical display could be composed of the target word le cerf volant (the kite), the paired distractor la coccinelle (the ladybug), and two competitors le dauphin (the dolphin) and la tomate (the tomato). Upon hearing the beginning of the utterance le , the participant is expected to fixate on both the images of the target, the kite, and the masculine competitor, the dolphin. If the participant does indeed do this, it shows that the matching gender marked articles are being accessed at the start of the utterance and as more sound input is processed, the target word gets more activated, eventually retrieving the correct word and fixating on the right image. c) Figure 5 illustrates the main results of Experiment 2, displaying the probability of fixation over time in milliseconds for the target, cohort competitor, and the average of the distractors. Through the analysis of ice cores, tree rings, glacier lengths, pollen remains and ocean sediments (EPA, 2016), scientists have been able to piece together the Earth s climate for roughly the last million years (some claim several millions of years). Through this research and the study of historic environmental events, it has been determined that the Earths climate changes from warmer to cooler over thousands of years due to natural reasons such as changes in solar energy, volcanic eruptions, and natural changes in the emission of greenhouse gases (EPA, 2016). However, in the last ~150 years or so, this trend has deviated severely due to human causes. This graph obtained from the EPA (EPA, 2016), shows the change in global temperatures from the last century. The green curve of the graph depicts the natural factors that influence climate on Earth. The blue curve of the graph depicts the natural factors plus the human factors that s influence climate on Earth. Through the inclusion of human factors, there is a drastic increase in temperature change. Many greenhouse gases are fund pollutants (Tietenberg Lewis, 2015), which can be reintegrated back into the environment over a period of time. However, during the time it takes for them to be recycled back, these gases sit in the Earth s atmosphere. The increased emission of greenhouse gases has caused a greenhouse effect (EPA, 2016). Unlike the Native Americans, the Puritans were a highly intellectual group. They had systems of meticulously written doctrines concerning the Renaissance. The Puritans also had a sense of adventure, which serves a higher intent. By having this characteristic they seek to create a better society. This is the opposite of what the French believed the Native Americans to be doing. According to the French reading they are wanderers, with nothing to attach them to a place, neither homes nor relationships, neither possessions nor love of country. This description is on the opposite end of the spectrum from the Puritan life. The Puritans attribute their want for a better society to their pioneering spirit.
