The hair growth cycle consists of 3 phases: 1) the anagen growth phase where hair grows rapidly for 2-6 years, 2) the catagen transitional phase where growth stops over a few weeks and the hair detaches from the root, and 3) the telogen resting phase where the hair follicle rests for 2-3 months before the old hair falls out and a new hair enters the growth phase in a continuous cycle. Losing around 80-100 hairs per day is normal, but more than 100 may indicate baldness as the growth and rest phases become unbalanced.
