Structure and
Growth Cycle of
the Hair, and the
Importance of a
Balanced Diet
Lesson 1
4. ● The hair grows 1 cm per month
● A single hair strand lives up to 7 years
● The hair grows faster during hot weather
and sleep
● The hair grows quicker between ages 16-24
● The hair becomes drier with age
● Women have more hair than men
Do you know these facts about
human hair?
5. ● Hair is made up of strong elastic strands of protein called
keratin
● The shaft is the visible part of the hair. It is composed of
dead cells.
● The only living part of a hair is its root, the dermal
papilla, which lies snugly below the surface of the scalp, in
a tube like depression known as the follicle.
● The dermal papilla is made up of cells that are fed by the
bloodstream.
Do you know these facts about human
hair?
7. The hair has 3 regions:
the cuticle, cortex, and medulla
HAIR SHAFT
PAPILLA
8. Cuticle
- The outermost layer of the
hair shaft, protects the inner
cortex layer. The cuticle
physically and chemically
breaking because of
improper hair care results in
split ends.
9. Cortex
- Is made up of fiber-like cells
that give hair strength,
elasticity, pliability, and
texture. The cortex contains a
pigment called melanin, which
gives hair its natural color.
10. Medulla
-is the center of each
hair, consists of very
soft keratin cells
interspersed with
spaces.
11. The hair’s natural shine is supplied
by sebum, its own conditioner.
Sebum is oil composed of waxes
and fats. The sebaceous glands
produce the sebum present in the
dermis.
13. ●Anagen phase – hair grows
continuously for a period of 2 -4 years.
●Catagen phase – or the transitional
phase, hair stops growing but cellular
activity continuous in the papilla for
about 15 – 25 days.
The hair goes through 3 stages of
growth:
the anagen, catagen, and telogen
phases.
14. ● Telogen phase – or resting phase,
hair growth completely stops.
During this phase, old hair is pushed
out by new hair. Hence, the cycle
begins again. The telogen phase lasts
10 – 120 days.
The hair goes through 3 stages of
growth:
the anagen, catagen, and telogen
phases.
17. A balanced diet is necessary for a healthy
scalp and hair. Good diet, coupled with
regular exercise, promotes good blood
circulation and the transport of oxygen and
nutrients to the hair root. Enough protein
in the diet is essential to maintain the
shine, luster, and strength of the hair.

Common Hair
Problems
It can be prevented by
eating a balanced diet and
observing good grooming
practices.
19. Dandruff
- Refers to white
flakes on the hair and
scalp. This is one of
the most common
scalp disorders.
20. Lice
- Are tiny insects found on
the hair that are passed
from one person to another
by sharing common combs,
hairbrushes, and hats
among others.
21. Hair Loss
- Is a condition that may
be caused by poor
nutrition, strong
chemicals in shampoos or
conditioners used, among
others.
22. Ringworm
- Is a fungal infection
that is contagious.
Sharing combs,
hairbrushes, and clothing
can spread the infection.
