The introduction:
• Academic publishing is undergoing major changes, as it makes the
transition from the print to the electronic format.
• The international scientific community is paying much attention to
quantitative data that are supposed to measure the impact of a paper
or of the journal and authors.

Research Metrics
• Research Metrics is the quantitative analysis of scientific
research outputs and their impacts.
• Research Metrics include a variety of measures and statistical
methods for assessing.
• Research Metrics measure impact and provide insight into
the influence of specific journal publications, individual articles,
and authors.

Using Research Metrics
• To support applications for grant funding.
• To support applications for promotion.
• In Department and Faculty reviews ( Ranking).
• This makes it easy for non-experts to evaluate a
researcher’s contribution.
• Taking out many of the personal judgments.

Research Metrics Measures
The h index
5/30/2021 7
The h index…
The index is a measure of the number of highly impactful papers a scientist has
published. The larger the number of important papers, the higher the h-index,
The h index takes into account two things:
1. The researcher’s PRODUCTIVITY (number of publications a researcher has
produced)
2. The IMPACT of that researcher’s publications (how many citations the
researcher’s publications have received)
The main advantage of h-index is that it combines a measure of quantity and
impact in a single indicator.

How to boost your h index…
1- Collaborate with mature researchers.
2- Chose your journal carefully.
3- Publish in open access.
4- Try with Review article.
5-Correctly write your name or use ORCIDE.(Open
Researcher and Contributor Identifier) https://orcid.org/0000-0001-

What's wrong with the h-index,
• It is difficult to compare H-scores across fields.
• self-citation (small circles of people who routinely cite
each other’s work).
• The H-index also strips out any information about author
order.
• The result is that there is little information about whether
you published an article in a top journal on your own or
whether you were one member of a huge team.
Research performance is complex multifaceted that cannot
be assessed adequately by means of a single indicator

Editor's Notes

  • #6 measure the impact and productivity of a researcher.  • Article Metrics, or citation tracking, is used to determine if an article, book, journal, or particular author has been cited by another work. • Altmetrics help researchers measure their impact from papers, data sets, websites, blog posts, and more. Impact Factor (IF) = Total number of citations accumulated by a journal divided by the total number of articles published in that journal within a period under considerations. For instance, if in five (5) years, a journal accumulates eighty-seven (87) citations from two hundred and twenty-five (225) articles published, then the Impact Factor of the journal will be 87/225=0.387.
  • #10 the h-index in Google Scholar tends to be higher than in Scopus or Web of Science. The main reason for this discrepancy is mainly attributed to the use of different data sources. While Google Scholar grabs citation information from all over the internet, Scopus and Web of Science restrict their data sources to classic academic sources. Each approach is valid on its own. Also with the rise of "altmetrics", there is generally the trend to measure the resonance of academic papers outside the strict academic world. However, since Google Scholar's approach is fully automatic and not subject to any review, it can also be manipulated rather easily. For example, you could upload false scholarly papers that give unsupported citation credit, or add papers to the Google Scholar profile that were not even authored by the person in question. Yes, there is room for improvement, but Google Scholar's h-index is very welcome as a free alternative to the subscription based databases.
  • #14 What's wrong with the h-index, . This is a disadvantage of the h-index which Egghe has tried to overcome through a new index, called g-index It is difficult to compare H-scores across fields. H-scores can often be higher in one field (such economics) than another field (such as literary criticism). self-citation (small circles of people who routinely cite each other’s work). The H-index also strips out any information about author order.
