They are important for career advancement and identifying experts in a field. While tools like Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science can provide metrics, ensuring an accurate publication list for an author is challenging. The h-index quantifies both citations and publications, meaning an author with h-index 12 has 12 publications cited at least 12 times each.
